FROM THE MANAGING EDITOR . G. MICHAEL DOBBS Holy cow, it’s November. Wasn’t it just January? Time flies when you’re dealing with a pandemic. I’m sure for many people this year has been a case of missing time. With the lockdown and restrictions, it’s clear all of us have lost a lot of time and a lot of progress in our lives. If we’ve avoided being sick, it’s been a triumph, but it doesn’t feel that way. Needless to say, in the region that founded Thanksgiving, the holiday will be greatly changed for many this year. Public health officials are worried the virus will spread through family gatherings, especially, if the people involved come from different states and if indoor mask-wearing doesn’t take place. Can we really get everyone to social distance and wear masks indoors at an event such as Thanksgiving? Thanksgiving will be the second family-oriented holiday to be affected by the pandemic. Halloween took a hit, and I’m sure both Christmas and New Year’s will be a shadow of what we usually expect. Thanksgiving is often related to being a speed bump on the holiday highway to Christmas but I think in many ways it is a superior event. I’ve always liked Thanksgiving because there is a lack of pressure unlike some of the other holidays. No presents are required unless you’re bringing something to the dinner. The goal is to bask in the affection of loved ones – which hopefully include your family – and to enjoy the meal to the point of passing out in bliss on a nearby couch. People look forward to having a dinner that occurs perhaps twice a year for many – roast turkey – and to see people they might only see a couple of times a year. As Oscar Wilde once wrote, “After a good dinner one can forgive anybody, even one’s own relations.” For more than 219,000 families in this country Thanksgiving may take on a much sadder tone, remembering those the pandemic took. It will be indeed a time to count our blessings and to provide help to the many people who have become sick or unemployed. There are plenty who need it. If any Thanksgiving is a time for personal reflection, it is this one. I, like so many others, am sorry families must bear such tragedy. So, on the bright side – philosophers near and dear to my heart have recommended to “always look on the bright side of life” – a COVID-19 Thanksgiving might have some interesting side effects. The family gatherings will undoubtedly be smaller and between you and me, perhaps having less out-of-town crazy uncles, annoying cousins or busy-body aunts around the table will be a good thing. There will still be the minefield of someone wanting to talk about politics, but that might be diminished with a smaller dinner party. Still it’s good to avoid the subject for the sake of digestion. Perhaps this year no one will complain if the turkey is dry and therefore perhaps there won’t be any arguments about the best way to cook a bird. Maybe the single members of the family won’t be poked or prodded to explain their social lives and the most controversial topic will center on football. Perhaps the younger members of the family will be able to put down their cell phones long enough to understand the nature of the holiday. Wait a minute, that could be a Thanksgiving miracle! I hope you all have a very good holiday, despite the mask-wearing, and social distancing. I hope it will be a refuge of normality for a few hours in a year that has been anything but normal. - G. REAL WORLD NEGOTIATIONS, BY JOSHUA N. WEISS PHD.

Real World Negotiations By Joshua N. Weiss, PhD

In today’s contentious world, wouldn’t it be nice to be able to resolve our own conflicts, large or small, in a way that leaves both sides happy? In Dr. Joshua Weiss’s new publication, The Book of Real- World Negotiations, readers are provided with critical lessons about effective negotiation. Weiss, who lives in East Longmeadow, Massachusetts, assembled his book using 25 concise, actual negotiation cases, each shared with him by one of the key negotiators involved. This allows the reader to become a “fly on the wall” in each situation, ranging from national and international legal disagreements and business conflicts to hostage standoffs and crisis interventions. The goal of his book, Weiss says, “is to show people how to find their way through difficult negotiations and to challenge commonly held myths.” He does this through a series of stories about actual negotiations, since he believes that people learn best through stories. Included in the book are stories about negotiating the release of a group of young Iranian female refugees being held against their will in Afghanistan; a successful resolution between two international companies, one of which was a sole supplier with very little interest in negotiating at all; and a somewhat comical situation during a business negotiation in which one of the negotiators lost his cool and stormed out of the room… right into a broom closet! The book contains a helpful introduction and glossary of pertinent terms, which can assist you in reading straight through the book, or in picking and choosing stories of particular interest to you. “We negotiate all the time, every day,” says Weiss, “so this is applicable to everyone.” Weiss is the cofounder of the Global Negotiation Initiative at Harvard University, and the creator and director of the MS in Leadership and Negotiation program at Bay Path University. He is a contributor to podcasts and an audiobook series published by the BBC, The Negotiator in You. He is also involved in real world negotiations, mediations, and other efforts to “resolve destructive conflict around the world.” The book is widely available through on-line resources such as Barnes and Noble and Amazon; as an ebook; and just recently as an audio book. For more information on the online course at Bay Path University, see https://www.baypath. edu/academics/graduate-programs/leadership-negotiationms/. 12 GO LOCAL NOVEMBER 2020

T

he newest member of the Federal Restaurant family, POSTO, just celebrated its first birthday. Located in the Longmeadow Shops in Massachusetts, POSTO is a “modern Italian restaurant and bar with its roots in classic Italian and Italian American food,” according to co-owner Ralph Santaniello. “POSTO is casual enough to take the kids to after soccer practice, but also upscale enough for date night,” he continued. The menu, carried out by Chef Jun Won Jang, offers a wide array of delicious choices, ranging from truffled

popcorn, to the Federal’s famous risotto balls, to salads and sandwiches, pastas, and entrees. Baked in a brick oven, their pizzas are a very popular choice. Try the “salad pizza,” with arugula, pesto, garlic, tomatoes, burrata and shaved parmesan cheese, finished with aged balsamic vinegar. Or try a simple margherita pie, with tomato, mozzarella, and basil, which is a favorite of Andres Gomez, manager of POSTO. “When I try to take one home after work,” he says, “it usually doesn’t even make it that far before I’ve eaten most of it!” Entrees include “dressed up” versions GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 13

of eggplant and chicken parmesan, grilled tuna, hanger steak and chicken. Hungry and in the mood for something rich and delicious? Order the pork chop saltimbocca, which features a large chop prepared with prosciutto, fontina cheese, English peas, Cipollini onions, and sage. Get a serving of vegetables in the decadent fresh corn polenta or the fried Brussel sprouts. Check out the full menu on-line. As far as beverages go, beer (bottles, cans and micro-brew drafts,) wine (over 30 varieties,) and cocktails, including several non-alcoholic choices, are available. As the food items on the menu change, so do the specialty cocktails available. You can even order a special hot toddy to share with the table during these colder months! POSTO’S indoor seating is in accordance with current COVID regulations, meaning tables spaced 6 feet apart, or separated by a barrier. Throughout the pandemic, the restaurant has survived mostly on take-out orders, with curbside pick-up and some delivery available. Outdoor seating over the summer was possible on the outdoor patio or under the tent set up in the parking lot. Gomez noted that the “local support we’ve gotten has been absolutely amazing.” 14 GO LOCAL NOVEMBER 2020

A lot of the customer base was already familiar with the Federal Restaurant in nearby Agawam, which has been delighting diners with its upscale cuisine for 18 years. The Federal, started in 2002 by Ralph Santaniello, his sister Cristina, and her husband Michael Presnal, was designed to be “one of the premier fine dining restaurants in the area,” according to Santaniello. “It is a white tablecloth restaurant that features a unique new American menu with strong classic French and Italian influences. My partner and Executive Chef Michael has a very unique take on new American, and I think it shows in our menus over the years.” Santaniello adds that their establishment, Vinted Wine Bar and Kitchen in West Hartford, Connecticut “is a destination for wine lovers in the area since 2012. It has a selection of over 70 wines by the glass, a great craft cocktail program, and an extensive craft beer selection, as well as a creative gastro pub menu.” With regards to the opening of POSTO, both families live in East Longmeadow, and with busy family and work schedules, Santaniello said that “we honestly just wanted to create a unique Italian concept that we could go to close to home.” Gomez also noted the favorable relationship between the restaurant owners and the management company of the Longmeadow Shops, saying that they had long wanted to work together. When the opportunity arose and space became available (POSTO is located where Bertucci’s Restaurant used to be) they took it and opened their third establishment. “The whole family helps out in different ways,” reports Santaniello. “It’s a true family business.” When asked what the family’s favorite foods are from the menu at POSTO, they had different answers…Ralph loves the pizza, Michael favors the cavatelli pasta, and Cristina chose the chicken parmesan. Speaking of dealing with COVID-19 issues, Santaniello says, “navigating the regulations and the huge loss of revenue (30-60%) are pretty much the challenges all small business owners face. Most of all uncertainty… we have worked extremely hard over the last 20 years to build a business and this is by far the most challenging time. This business is all we have. It is all we have worked for. So much of it is out of our control. It leads to many sleepless nights. I worry about my family’s future as well as all of my staff - close to 100 full and part time employees between the three restaurants.” In spite of that, Santaniello spoke for the group in saying that what keeps them going, and what they enjoy most, is that they love the people…the guests and the employees. “It’s a new challenge every day,” he says. “And I think we all love good food and wine!”

PLACE

“I

t was the best of times, it was the worst of times…” according to Charles Dickens in A Tale of Two Cities. Right now, we’re all trying to make the best of things, although the coming winter months during the COVID-19 crisis may look rather bleak. But, there are still good times to be had if you know where to look and where to go. For instance, you and your family or friends can pay a visit to Sonny’s Place in Somers, Connecticut. Owned by the Antonacci family, this facility has continued to grow and expand its many year-round offerings, so that in spite of COVID-19, many popular attractions and activities can still be enjoyed on the weekends throughout the upcoming months. Outdoor activities available this month are mini-golf, batting cages, and the zipline. But if it gets too chilly for you…don’t worry! There’s plenty to do inside.

The Arcade continues to provide fun, games and prizes for all ages in the 7,000 sf indoor space, with options such as Pac Man, air hockey, a giant Connect 4 game, Angry Birds, a grab and win claw game, and Dizzy Chicken, among many other games. The Typhoon Motion Theater, according to their website, lets you “immerse yourself into a fantasy roller coaster ride, experience a high speed racecar drive, or try out many other experiences, complete with the slight vibrations of shifting gears, or the drastic collision of an accident.” The Harpoon Lagoon challenges you to aim and shoot harpoons at the fish on screen, while anticipating when the hidden jellyfish will come out of the treasure chest. NBA Hoops Basketball gives you 40 seconds to sink as many baskets as you can to “win big” without letting the pressure get to you as time runs out. GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 17

In addition to the many arcade games, Sonny’s stateof-the-art laser tag arena will let you defend yourself or your team’s base against the opposition, ducking in and out of obstacles and hiding spots. You can choose from a solo free-for-all game, with every person looking out for themselves; a team free-for-all; or a team base recharge game. Due to COVID-19, the number of players allowed at one time is 12, and all must wear a mask. You can go on-line to book your session(s.) For a gentler way to enjoy the amusements, go for a ride on the historic 1925 carousel. All of the horses and chariots are hand-carved and on their way to being fully restored. Since arriving at Sonny’s Place in 2017, the ongoing restoration work is being accomplished by the New England Carousel Museum. Before arriving at Sonny’s Place, this carousel has graced different locations with its presence, including Delaware Beach, Lakewood Park in Waterbury, Connecticut, and Kiddieland Park in Illinois. Pick a still horse, a jumper, or even a chariot to ride while enjoying the music as the band organ plays. For more adventures of the physically engaging, immersive experience type, try out Holgate Virtual Reality, “an award winning virtual reality attraction that takes gaming to a new dimension.” It can be suitable for a range of ages, depending on the games you choose to play. While wearing the VR headset, you can be battling robots, dragons, zombies, or having a family friendly snowball fight while maneuvering your hovercraft over a frozen lake. 18 GO LOCAL NOVEMBER 2020

Another new and exciting activity is the XD Dark Ride, a brand new interactive 3-D ride, which allows 8 players to sit and partake in one of six different shooting scenarios, complete with seat movement, fans, and other surprises. Birthday parties are still an option at Sonny’s Place, with up to 20 guests, including parents, allowed to gather in one of the enlarged party rooms. Again, masks must be worn, except when eating. Unfortunately, due to capacity restrictions of the pandemic, the North Pole Experience cannot be held this year. However, there are some special Christmas activities being planned, so check the website for upcoming details!

Sonny’s Place is located at 349 Main Street (Route 190) in Somers, Connecticut. Currently open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Check the website for details. sonnysplace.com, 860-763-5454

ave you been feeling anxious or tense lately? Do you experience body aches or pains, sleep issues, or are you just not feeling your best? Your key to feeling better may be a visit to Hazardville Wellness in Enfield, Connecticut. There, Nathan Fay is commemorating his 5th year as owner of the Center, and his 15th year of practicing his art of Myoskeletal Alignment. Fay is a licensed and board certified massage therapist with a Master’s Degree in Myoskeletal Alignment from the Freedom From Pain Institute under the direction of Erik Dalton. He is currently finishing a Diploma of Osteopathy Manual Therapy. He also teaches seminars on Myoskeletal Alignment technique throughout New England. Fay says, “I am a life-long learner. Although many have said that I’m a master of my craft (having over 3,000 hours of education under my belt), I am forever a student. I started off at the Connecticut Center for Massage Therapy and shortly after obtaining my license was introduced to the work of Erik Dalton and Myoskeletal Alignment Technique (MAT). MAT opened a huge door in my work of solving chronic and acute pain problems - clients were getting better and seeing results in fewer sessions. I’ve always had a fascination with continuing my education so that I can further understand assessment and treatment options, and also understand how to perform spinal and extremity manipulations. When Covid-19 hit earlier this year it was an opportune time for me to work through a large program in Osteopathy. I look forward to adding this element of treatment into my practice and, as always, helping clients get better faster!” Fay says that he doesn’t diagnose his clients, but rather, his philosophy “has always been to work with and not on them to create a team oriented therapy session. Understanding how to take a good history, active listening and a thorough understanding of assessments is how I choose a treatment plan for each individual that I work with. I believe that working with other professionals on an as-needed basis is important. This is first and foremost necessary in order to do what is best for the client. If a client, whether new to my practice or long-

standing, comes in and they are presenting red flags that indicate I may need to refer them for imaging or a second opinion, I do not hesitate to tell them that. Because of this willingness to refer my clients to other providers as necessary, over the years I have had many medical doctors, physical therapists and other health professionals seek my services for themselves, knowing that I am open to working with and not against them.” Some of the issues that Fay has successfully treated have included realignment of the body, improvement of soft tissue health, nerve impingements, scoliosis, disc issues, tendonitis, bursitis, sprains and strains, plantar fasciitis, both chronic and acute pain, chronic tension, and muscle and sports injuries. In addition to the massage therapy and alignment work, Fay may also use PhysioKinetix training. This is a four level brain and body based training progression, created to help individuals who face chronic pain during their daily activities. Fay explains that the system was “developed by my mentor, Paul Kelly. I use this system with my clients in conjunction with their therapy outside of our sessions and have the ability to work on movements through gentle strengthening or stretching. Many people, when in pain, are fearful of moving, concerned that it will possibly make things worse or increase their level of pain. Part of educating clients is to help them NOT have fear based movement by building confidence in their movement while at the same time reducing pain.” When asked if any of his work at the Center is covered by insurance, Fay answered, “this is a common question. Under my licensure, insurance does not currently cover my services. That being said, I am one of the few providers that spends a full 45 to 60 minutes with each client actively doing therapy as well as providing education. To spend that amount of time with a client is very rare in the world of therapy and pain management; oftentimes I meet folks who have been in and out of other providers’ offices, sometimes getting answers (sometimes not) but not really receiving treatment or a game plan on how to work towards moving and feeling better.” In addition to Fay’s work, you can also take advantage of registered dietician Jacqui Campbell, another member of the team at Hazardville Wellness. Campbell, MS, RD, CDN, and LDN, provides medical nutrition therapy tailored to each individual client. Her main goal is to help them find a way of eating that meets their needs, goals and lifestyle. She doesn’t prescribe diets, but helps people 24 GO LOCAL NOVEMBER 2020

heal their relationship with food and move away from restrictive diets and fads. Campbell takes the time with each client to review medical history, their schedule, eating habits, physical activity and overall lifestyle. Based on that assessment she then makes individualized recommendations, helps clients set realistic goals and provides on-going support. She works with people of all ages and backgrounds, and has a particular passion for working with those with eating disorders, diabetes and digestive issues. Yet another intriguing sounding therapy at the Center is the Sunlighten Mpulse, known as a full spectrum infrared sauna. Clients find it beneficial for a number of reasons, according to Fay...to promote relaxation, reduce pain, and help with sleep. Sunlighten, while similar to a traditional sauna, delivers a much more effective outcome as the infrared heat is absorbed through the surface of the skin unlike an ambient heat. When asked what he enjoyed most about his business, Fay responded, “What’s not to enjoy??? After 15 years of doing this work it’s still always exciting! I love what I do and enjoy the continued challenges that clients present as they walk through my door. I’m constantly reminded that no two bodies are the same and the challenges I am presented with, as well as the outcomes that I help clients achieve, are mind blowing! I still to this day get excited when a client gets off of my table after a session and they start to move and you see an expression of joy and relief on their face because they feel better and they know they can move on with their life and enjoy the things they love to do with less or no pain.” In addition to Fay’s enthusiasm for his work at the Wellness Center, he also loves spending time with his 10-year-old son, Michael, building forts, seeking out the best roller coasters and fishing in Lake Champlain.

! RECIPE SUBMITTED BY JANET PARÉ

CRANBERRY BRIE BITES

If you're assigned an appetizer for Thanksgiving, give these a try. You can make them ahead, refrigerate overnight and pop them in the oven at the last minute. If you don't have mini muffin pans, or you just want to save a few steps, substitute the crescent dough with frozen phyllo cups placed on a cookie sheet.

1 tube crescent dough (or frozen phyllo cups) 8 oz. wheel of brie 1 cup whole cranberry sauce or fresh or frozen cranberries, chopped 1/2 cup walnuts or pecans, minced 6 fresh rosemary sprigs, cut into 1 inch pieces or mint leaves, minced

Preheat oven to 375 degrees or 350 degrees if using phyllo cups. Grease mini muffin pans with cooking spray. On lightly floured surface, roll out crescent dough, pinching seems together. Cut into 24 squares and place in mini muffin pans. Cut brie into small pieces and place in dough. Top with a teaspoon of cranberry sauce or minced cranberries and top with a pinch of minced nuts. Bake until golden brown, about 15 minutes. Top with sprig of rosemary or mint leaves. Serve warm. Enjoy!

Pro Lube Auto Center

W

hile the ongoing pandemic has put a halt to many things this year, it has reignited a renewed focus and appreciation for locally owned businesses. Locally owned and operated by John Richi, Pro Lube Auto Center in Northampton, MA opened in August of 1990 and was a fast lube and tune-up shop. Celebrating its 30th anniversary, Richi says Pro Lube Auto Center, which services all makes and models of domestic and import vehicles, has “evolved to include fast lube, state inspections, and full automotive service and repair.” While October is known as Car Care Month, car maintenance doesn’t start or end there. Suggests Richi, GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 27

car owners should “stay on top of the maintenance schedule in your owner’s manual.” Furthermore, when it comes time to start winterizing your car, owners should “have your battery tested before it gets cold out.” In addition to full-service auto repair— performing oil changes, brake service, electrical and electronic repair, as well as steering, suspension, and exhaust; Pro Lube Auto Center also specializes in preventative maintenance. Like many businesses, this year has been tough for Pro Lube Auto Center, but, says Richi, “business is almost back to normal. I would say we’ve been able to adapt to a changing market.” Richi adds, “early in the pandemic when the state was in lockdown, it was very difficult for us. I had to lay off seven of our staff. We received a PPP loan and by June 1st everyone was back at work.” While businesses and customers alike adjust to the new normal, Richi assures customers that in addition to great and 28 GO LOCAL NOVEMBER 2020

reliable customer service, safety is his and his staffs’ priority. “For safety we wear masks anytime a customer is in the office. If one of our technicians gets in your car, they are wearing a mask and fresh gloves.” When asked how he’s been able to sustain his business over the past 30 years, Richi answers, “my staff is the number one reason for our success.” He concludes, saying, “we’re problem solvers. Give us a try.”

Pro Lube Auto Center is located at 480 Pleasant Street in Northampton, MA. Hours of operation are Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m., Saturday 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Call 413-586-5640 to make your appointment today.
