FROM THE MANAGING EDITOR . G. MICHAEL DOBBS

There is a two-word phrase that can inspire many people: road trip. Perhaps it is the romantic in me, but generally the idea of making sure the car is in good shape, properly stocked with drinks and snacks, and the GPS is programmed for adventure is very appealing. I’m sure the fact I spent a lot of time in a car with my parents traveling through the region while growing up as well as traveling twice from sea to shining sea, that has given me an appreciation for the road trip. As a kid, I always kept a close eye on signs that might guide us to a roadside zoo, a mysterious oddity – “See the Giant Jack Rabbit” – or an interesting looking place such as Stuckey’s. Then, of course, once I realized we were going in the right direction my younger brother and I would start lobbying for a stop. Stuckey’s was a great chain of shops that marketed its pecan products and their guarantee of clean rest rooms. It was a great place to stretch your legs, get a bite to eat, fill up the tank and get some gifts for the folks back home. The company still exists but is primarily down South. Sometimes the Old Man would stop and sometimes we learned just to be quiet. It was rather unpredictable. As far as the Giant Jack Rabbit went, it was a 20-foot-tall concrete sculpture of a rabbit. I will admit being a tad disappointed. As I write this column, it’s apparent there is a real challenge to travel right now: gas prices. With prices hovering around $4.50 for regular fuel, any extended road trip might seem just too expensive at this time. Luckily for us living in this region, there is plenty to see or do close to home. With the return of spring and summer many of us will be hankering to hit the road. This issue of Go Local has several ideas for a reasonable and affordable road trip. The Worthington Vineyard in Somers, CT, is a logical choice for those who love wine. A trip to Expressions Pottery Workshop also sounds pretty cool. Or perhaps you’re looking for ideas for Father’s Day that don’t include giving the old man a tie. We have a page of ideas for mini-road trips for that holiday in this edition. The Agawam Axe House is one such destination that frankly I’ve been wanting to visit. Somehow after a long week of enduring the ins and outs of work, throwing axes seems to be a great way to blow off some steam. Maybe I’ll ask for that as my Father’s Day present. Have a great month and see you here in July.

hy go Searching for Italy like Stanley Tucci on his popular CNN television show when you can find a bit of Napoli - or its better-known English equivalent Naples - right in East Longmeadow? Villa Napoletana has been serving up a taste of the finest southern Italian cuisine since 1998, where you will be greeted by their friendly, welcoming staff headed by Giuseppe "Joe" Manzi, the restaurant's chef manager. Born and raised in Italy, Manzi and his family moved to the United States in the 1980s. “I opened Villa Napoletana on St. Anthony’s Day, June 13, 1998, in homage to my parents, Anthony and Silvana Manzi, and to bring the tradition of real authentic Italian cuisine to the local area. Even now in her seventies, my mom regularly visits the restaurant and specially crafts recipes that are added onto our menu." While the menu features a wide range of choices that are both traditional and unique and is set up in a way that offers the flexibility to enjoy either a full-course meal or share drinks and appetizers at the bar. There is a wide selection of appetizers to choose from including a unique, warm Bruschetta which they call Panzanella. It's a Freselle bread with freshly diced tomatoes, basil, minced garlic, red onions, extra virgin olive oil and parmesan cheese. For those with a taste for seafood, the chef recommends their Clams Casino, formerly remembered as the "Frank Sinatra." The popular dish features freshly caught clams

on the half shell stuffed with bacon, onions, peppers, garlic, and a lemon and white wine reduction with a golden crumb topping baked to perfection. Some taste-tempting appetizers include the Portabella Imbotti, the Friarielli, and Artichoke Francese. Portobello Imbotti, another popular appetizer, offers a grilled portobello mushroom marinated in extra virgin olive oil and freshly minced garlic with a house-made sausage stuffing, and topped off with a hint of melted Asiago cheese. Friarielli is a broccoli rapi sauteed with sweet sausage, extra virgin olive oil and fresh lemon. “Another very old dish is the Artichoke Francese, which here in America is served as artichoke hearts dipped in egg batter, lightly fried, and finished in a lemon, white wine and butter sauce. If you were in Italy, you would be served a whole artichoke, steamed with the leaves still on it,” added Manzi. Still other mouth-watering appetizers include Mozzarella al Bufala Fresca, Calamari Fritti, Calamari Fra-Diavolo, Zuppa di Clams or Mussels, Gamberi Grand Marnier, Mozzarella in Carozza, and Gamelli. When it comes to the main course, guests can choose from nearly 50 entrees. Many love the Spaghetti Puttanesca, made with olives, capers, onions, and fresh parsley in a plum tomato sauce. For those craving a taste of comfort food, there is the Red or White Lasagna to choose from. The red Lasagna is made with our homemade Bolognese sauce with ground beef, pork and veal, and whole milk ricotta made in-house stuffed in between layers of pasta and topped off with a warm mozzarella finish. Villa Napoletana also offers multiple options for vegetarians. In addition to the Pasta Primavera, those with dietary restrictions love the Lasagna Bianca. “One of my mother’s gifts to the restaurant was her White Lasagna, which she makes with a béchamel sauce, a European sauce made from scratch. Of course, there are layered noodles, grated Grano Padano, ricotta, and yellow squash and eggplant. It’s a perfect meatless option,” said the chef. For those with other dietary restrictions, gluten-free pasta is available as a substitute in any dish. Other popular sellers include their Penne ala Vodka made with sausage and prosciutto, garlic, shallots and red onions in a pink vodka sauce, as well as their Grilled Veal Chop, a 14-ounce, bone-in veal chop grilled to perfection that is topped with a port wine reduction. For guests craving other choices, the entrees are categorized into pasta, carne (meats), pollo (chicken), vitello (veal) and pesce (fish). The menu offers options such as: Fettucini Alfredo, Penne Vesuvio, Orecchiette Romane, Spaghetti Carbonara, Lobster Ravioli, Pasta al Forno, Pasta Primavera, Penne all’ Arriabbiata, Beef Marsala, Tournadoes di Carne, Filletto Azzurro, Stuffed Beef Tenderloin, Delmonico Steak, Pollo Inpacottata, Stuffed Chicken Florentina, Chicken Modena, Chicken con Cognac, Vitello alla Mamma Flora, Vitello Marsala, Veal Gorgonzola with Shrimp, Linguini with Clams, Pesce Spada alla Napoletana, Gamberi Francese, and Pescatore with Risotto or Spaghetti. Italy or a cold beer like Peroni, Italy’s number one premium beer. The bar also serves up a number of specialty cocktails, including the restaurant's famous espresso martini and popular choices Manhattan and a smoked Old-Fashioned. When COVID-19 changed the restaurant industry forever in 2020, small business owners had to become more creative to survive - for Villa Napoletana that meant turning to takeout and creating family bundles. Villa Napoletana created family bundles, available for curbside pick-up or delivery by Delivery Express or UberEats, that include house salad and bread. Entrees, ranging in price from $38 to $60 include Shrimp Mediterranean, Pasta Toscano, Chicken Parmesan, Gorgonzola Crusted Beef Medallions or Grilled Salmon Fresca, as well as a variety of Pasta Buckets. Appetizers to choose from include Asiago Artichoke, Antipasto Napoletana, and Villa Bread. Desserts such as Tiramisu and Chocolate Chip Cannolis and others are available for takeout as well. Now that the warmer weather has arrived, Villa Napoletana has opened its outdoor patio, located right next to the restaurant. It was originally licensed by the town to help the restaurant during COVID-19 when many patrons preferred the safety of dining outdoors. It was so successful that the patio continues to function today for those who enjoy dining al fresco. Villa Napoletana offers Sunday Brunch from 10am until 2pm with mouthwatering delights for both breakfast and lunch. Hungry guests can begin with a Belgian waffle or omelet that is custom-made to order with all the fixings. Classic options such as home fries, eggs Benedict, sausage, and bacon are always featured, as well as a carving station for specialty meats. Hot entrees rotate weekly, but you will regularly find various options such as seafood, beef, fresh vegetables, and plenty more to choose from. Guests can end their meal with an assortment of cakes to choose from as well as other gourmet desserts and fresh breads alongside hand-held fruits. But the fun doesn’t end at 2pm on Sunday. From 5-9 pm, Villa Napoletana offers their Wine & Dine Special featuring a complimentary bottle of Chianti or Pino Grigio with the purchase of two entrees and an appetizer, and you will be serenaded by talented live performers. Don't expect to dash in and out for a quick meal at Villa Napoletana. All dishes are freshly prepared in house and take time from the kitchen to the table, leaving a while to sit back, relax and enjoy the company.

Villa Napoletana is located at 664 North Main St. in East Longmeadow and offers complimentary valet parking on weekends. Hours are Monday through Saturday from 3-11 pm, Sunday from 10am to 2pm, then 3pm to 11pm. For more information, call 413-732-9300 or visit villanapoletana.com. GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 15

Worthington Vineyard

& Winery

W

orthington Vineyard & Winery opened their doors to hundreds of locals over the course of their two-day opening on Mother’s Day weekend. Their Facebook posting thanking local customers for their patronage is as clever as their finely crafted wines. “We also thank the many patrons who simply heard about us through the ‘grapevine.’ The best way we can show our appreciation for all of you is to continue to serve the community both in ‘wine’ and in spirit for what you all have done for us.” The “us” is Mark and Karen Murdoch who began their journey as home winemakers with a crabapple tree in the front yard of their East Windsor, CT, home providing the fixings for their crabapple wine. “It was a pretty good first wine for us and we eventually got into kits and making larger batches. Then we moved to Somers and there were grape vines on the land. I always wanted the opportunity to grow grapes, so we ended up planting about 60 vines over the next few years,” Murdoch said.

GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 19

Not only did the couple grow Concord, Corot Noir, Cayuga, Seycal, and Canadice grapes in their yard, but also apples, raspberries, peaches, and blueberries, from which they made a variety of blends. “Sometimes the wines were good, and other times not so good. But we learned each step of the way and the more we made, the better we got at it. We never sold them, they were for personal consumption, and we only kept about 10% for ourselves and gave away the rest as gifts or brought them to parties we were attending. Our friends loved them. In the fall, we would have parties and our friends would help us pick the grapes and then to process them. Don’t imagine Lucille Ball stomping on them from one of her old television comedy shows, we had machinery to do the job. But it was a great way for everyone to socialize and have fun together,” Murdoch said. The Murdochs have always enjoyed visiting wineries across Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, California, and even Europe, seeing and learning what others were doing. It wasn’t until five years ago that they began to cast a different eye on their travels. “We were getting closer to retirement age and thought this (opening a winery) was something we could do. So, we ended up shopping around for land and looked at about 70 sites in New England, Pennsylvania and New York, only to learn that the Worthington Pond Farm property in our own town had come up for sale. We fell in love with the 98-acre property, which hadn’t been farmed in several years, and now we are putting it to good use,” Murdoch said, 20 GO LOCAL JUNE 2022

who leased the property for one year before purchasing it in 2020. The Murdochs began by planting 800 vines the year they leased the property and now have planted 2,000 grapevines altogether. “We have six varieties, hybrids that are good for a northern climate that have either been cultivated by Cornell University or University of Minnesota. Our three reds are Chambourcin, Corot Noir and Marechal Foch, and our three whites are Vidal, Cayuga White, and Frontenac Blanc,” Murdoch said. In addition, they plan to offer apple, raspberry, and blueberry wines made from fruit purchased from local farms. “It takes about three years to produce viable grapes and then another six months to two years or more to bottle," Murdoch said. “The demand for an average size winery like ours is more than we can produce right now, we would need a planting of 6,000 to 8,000 vines. That is why for a while, as we have done to open our doors to the public, we will need to continue to bring in juice or grapes from other sources, from Connecticut, California or New York to make our wines,” he added. The four wines and their descriptions provided by Murdoch that are currently on sale and being poured at Worthington Vineyard & Winery are: Perseverance: “Perseverance represents the fact we persevered in getting through so many zoning board meetings and other challenges, eventually getting to where we are today. My wife and I are both engineers and she works with NASA and has patented hardware in space. The Mars Lander is depicted on the label as a gesture to those NASA engineers who have also persevered. Perseverance is a red wine made from the Petite Sirah grape from Suisan Valley, California. Alcohol: 12% Bottle Price: $20 Zinful Pleasure: “Our chef calls GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 21

this our naughty wine because of its strong alcohol presence. It’s a red made from the Zinfandel grape I bring in from Suisun Valley in California. My wife and I have been making this wine for years and we kept the recipe and will probably continue to offer it for a while because of its ‘selfless pleasure' to drink.” Alcohol: 15% Bottle Price: $20 Worthington White: “We wanted a name for one of our wines that reflected the name of our winery. It is based on the Cayuga White grape which we were able to harvest last year and some of which went into the making of this wine along with others from Finger Lakes, New York. It’s turned out to be one of our more popular wines so far.” Alcohol: 12% Bottle Price: $20 Private Picnic: “This is a Riesling-based wine that is dry, not sweet, and good for picnics and the warm summer months. You can also have your own private picnic here on our grounds. You can pack your own picnic basket, bring your own blanket and enjoy our beautiful scenery. You don’t have to purchase our food, but you do have to buy our wine.” Alcohol: 12% Bottle Price: $20 While imbibing their favorite libation, wine lovers can enjoy some light fare from the kitchen of Worthington Vineyard & Winery staffed by Norman Mayette of Hamptons Catering. “During our opening weekend, Chef Mayette offered sandwiches and salads alongside what he calls a Bento Box, which I call the equivalent of a charcuterie box filled with cut meats, cheese and crackers. He plans to change the menu each week, but initially offered our guests a roast beef and brie crostini or an Italian sandwich with ham and salami with roasted red peppers on a ciabatta roll," Murdoch said. Although Worthington Vineyard & Winery has only been open for just over a month, Murdoch is already planning for the future. For the time being, there can be no “sound of music” inside or outside on the grounds or “beer on tap.” “We need a special permit from the state for entertainment, which we do plan on applying for in the future. You can entertain yourselves in the winter by bringing your snowshoes, cross country skis, or ice skates to step out on several of our frozen ponds, then come back into our tasting room where the fire will be

roaring and you can enjoy a nice hot mulled wine,” Murdoch said. “We are also well aware that some wives might be dragging their husbands along who are beer drinkers and we planned on having their favorite brew available for them. We learned that Connecticut does allow its wineries to serve beer, as long as it is from a Connecticut brewer, and there are plenty of them for us to choose from. But, again, we need a special permit from the state and are looking into applying for one,” he added. In the meantime, Murdoch has already begun plans to build a new tasting room within the next year that would offer more space and the capacity to offer more wines. The Murdochs now have a staff of 15 servers and five farm hands, albeit part-time, that they didn’t have to worry about paying when they were producing at home - their sons also help, Kevin, 28, works from their new home on the farm, and Alex, 33, lives in New Haven, but comes home on weekends - but the couple is not greedy. “If we can achieve a reasonable profit level selling our wines on-site, we see no reason to sell them wholesale,” Murdoch said. Worthington Vineyard & Winery is located on 359 Mountain Road. Hours are Friday and Saturday from noon to 8 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. For those familiar with the land formerly referred to for many years as Worthington Pond Farm, the Murdochs are retaining the rental function of their property that offers a multitude of facilities to host your private event or group gathering from a covered bridge for weddings and other events to five patios for special celebrations and picnics. The rustic charm and natural beauty of Worthington Pond Farm can also be booked for use as the backdrop for engagement and wedding photos, senior and family portraits, Christmas cards and more.

HOUSE PLAYERS

F

or more than five decades, the Opera House Players have provided high-quality entertainment to theater-lovers and they plan to continue to grow as the group renovates their new home in Enfield. Executive Director Susan Choquette said that with a $1.5 million state grant, the OHP board is embarking on a major renovation at 100 High St., a former church. “We are so excited to make 100 High St. our permanent home,” said Choquette. “Our renovation project has kicked off and we are well into the planning phase.” The group is working with architect Tom Douglas and Altieri for engineering services. They are also in the process of vetting theatrical lighting and sound consultants. “Our projected timeline is to break ground in late fall of this year, with an anticipated opening in August 2023,” Choquette said. “We are hoping to have our first production be the November 2023 show.” GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 29

The Opera House Players started in Enfield in 1968 in the basement of St. Martha’s Church. Known as the St. Martha’s Players, the group outgrew the space and relocated to the Broad Brook Opera House in 2003. In celebration of their 50th anniversary in 2018, the Players returned to their hometown and came nearly full-circle, performing in the annex of the church at 100 High St. where they will continue to perform until the rest of the building is renovated. Choquette said she is very excited about the future and the renovation. “It's a unique and beautiful space with the many stained glass windows,” she said. “We will be transforming the former sanctuary into the performance space with a proscenium stage and stadium seating. An all new lobby area, green room, and set shop space will also be part of the construction plans.” Choquette said the theater and stage will be fully accessible. “We were thrilled to receive the $1.5 million state bond to help fund the renovation,” she noted. “The bond, together with other grants and private donations will fund the renovation. A capital campaign and long-term development plan are also in the works.” The vision of the OHP is to provide Broadway quality,

affordable musical theater to the community. The mission is to attract the top local talent and reach the broadest audience with our productions, in a theater that is comfortable and inviting as well as to provide an outlet for innovative, creative and artistic expression and engage the community for cultural enrichment and long term sustainability of the theater. One of the oldest groups in the area performing exclusively musical theatre, OHP is a registered nonprofit that performs four shows a season, with a variety ranging from comedy to drama, contemporary to classic, as well as multiple fundraisers a year. Choquette said the variety of performances is important. “We always make sure there is something for everyone,” she stated. Choquette became part of OHP in 2015 when her husband and daughter were cast in the OHP production of “Fiddler on the Roof.” “I got involved with that production as prop master and stage manager,” she said. “My whole family fell in love with the theater, and The Opera House Players became our theater home. From there I joined the board in 2016 and have been heavily involved ever since. I served as board president from 2017-2020 and then became executive director in the fall of 2021.”

Choquette leads the all-volunteer board of directors, which currently has eight members. In addition to the board, there is an artistic committee headed by the executive producer that sets the artistic agenda for the organization. Choquette said in keeping with their mission, OHP produces exclusively musical theater and each production is cast through an open audition process -- no roles are pre-cast. “Last year we produced our first annual summer youth production, ‘Shrek,’ cast entirely with youth ages 10-22. This summer our production is ‘The Little Mermaid’,” said Choquette. The OHP building renovation is not only a major milestone for the group, but also much-anticipated by those in the Thompsonville neighborhood. “The revitalization on Thompsonville has been on the forefront of the Enfield agenda for a long time,” Choquette said. “The arts are always the cornerstone of community development. Not only does it help bring cultural enrichment and involvement to the community, but also helps increase business to local restaurants and shops. Soon the new train station and park will be constructed as well in Thompsonville. “We are proud to be a large part of the revitalization effort in Thompsonville.” Choquette said it is literally a dream come true. “The renovation of 100 High St. has been our dream since we moved here in 2018,” she said. “It has taken us a while to get to this point, but we're finally starting the process and we are 100% invested in this. We are so excited to be a part of this community!”

Combine all your ingredients into a blender or food processor and blend until smooth. Put mixture through a fine mesh strainer to make sure no blackberry seeds are in the dressing. Expressions

or 50 years, Expressions Pottery Workshop has enhanced the arts and cultural scene in the greater East Granby region. Established in 1972, the co-op started with 25 artists and continued to grow over the next five decades. Artist Andrea Gaedeke has been a member of the Workshop since 1978 and said the co-op artists and their work is constantly growing. “We are always evolving, with new forms, firing techniques, surface decorations, glazes, etc.,” she said. “We also learn through workshops presented by members and outside artists.” The Expressions Pottery Workshop website states that the founders were “energetic potters who found a warm synergy with one another and the desire to share knowledge, experience, and equipment.” Gaedeke says that is still true today. “We all maintain a strong commitment to both our art and our community,” Gaedeke said. According to expressionspottery.com,

Expressions has grown over the last several decades and now provides a warm and friendly facility to over 50 local potters including members, renters and students representing a range of experience from beginners to quite accomplished potters. In addition to Gaedeke – one of the longest members of the group - the other 49 artists in the co-op all bring a unique perspective to Expressions. While some artists, including Debbye Rosen and Tracy Marlor, have been potting for 40 -plus years, some artist such as Sandy Stevens, began more recently. Stevens did not have her hands in clay until 2011 when her youngest daughter asked to take a pottery class together. Stevens was hooked from the start and joined the co-op four years ago. Ruth George is a self-proclaimed passionate potter who discovered pottery in the 70s. Taking a break from her art to travel and raise her family, George’s love was rekindled recently and she joined Expressions in 2019 with a focus on the Japanese art of Raku. For some Expressions artist, pottery is an expressive outlet, passion or hobby, for many, it is also how they make a living. “We derive income from monthly member dues, renter payments, and student fees,” Gaedeke said. Expressions Pottery Workshop offers day and evening classes four times a year, which are taught by studio-certified teachers. Classes are generally geared for beginning and intermediate students. Class sizes are small with a maximum of nine students to ensure the needs of the novice potter are met, while also challenging the more skilled potter. Advanced potters may want to consider becoming a renter or member, states the Expressions website. Expressions also has a gallery to showcase the work of its members. Located at the studio at 9 School St., East Granby, the gallery features high-quality ceramic gifts. Gaedeke said that contemporary and traditional wheelthrown and hand-built stoneware, porcelain, raku, saggar, and wood-fired creations are displayed and for sale. “From functional to whimsical to decorative, we have something for everyone on your gift list. All glazes used on our functional pottery are food-safe and lead-free and are microwave, oven, and dishwasher safe,” she stated.

The studio is open Saturdays from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and whenever members are in the studio. Gaedeke said visitors should contact the co-op for additional hours and visit the website for extended holiday openings. Annual events include Perennials & Pots, Saturday, June 4, from 10 a.m.-4p.m. and the Empty Bowls fundraiser Saturday, Oct. 15. The 11th Annual Perennials & Pots event includes recent works such as garden-inspired handmade pottery – planters, birdfeeders and birdhouses, vases, bowls, platters, sculpture, and more. Meet the potters, take a tour of the studio, and browse the gallery and under the tents – rain or shine. Every fall, Expressions Pottery Workshop participates in the Empty Bowls fundraiser organized by the Women's Club of East Granby and helps host an afternoon of soup and art at the East Granby Community Center to benefit the East Granby Food Pantry. Attendees select from one of over 400 beautiful, handmade soup bowls, made by Expressions Pottery Workshop members and students, and have it filled with soup donated by participating restaurants. After enjoying a soup lunch, attendees can visit the Expressions Pottery studio at 9 School St. for dessert and wheel-throwing demonstrations.
