The end of this month will mark 10 years of my New England living - time has a funny way of sneaking up on you. By no means was my migration from Western New York planned, I was perfectly content pouring wine in the Finger Lakes and marshalling airplanes at the Ithaca Airport (except in January). But I met a guy in Rhode Island from Connecticut at a Cajun Zydeco festival and the rest, as they say, is history (I realize those last two sentences sound absurd, but are in fact extremely real). As a pop-drinking, Buffalo Bills-cheering, sub-eating, lake effect snow-loving WNYer, the transition didn’t come without hiccups (although I was thankful Canadian coins were no longer littering my pocket change). While I missed Wegmans terribly - as well as friends and family - I acclimated at an incremental pace once I figured out what a package store was. I enjoyed exploring my new home, purposely getting lost to discover uncharted communities; perhaps just preparation for my current role. Each exploration unveiled novel traits distinctive of New England and I soon gave these regional quirks similar affection to those in my home state. After a bit, I contentedly settled in and began to experience the awesomeness of the region. In a way the stories in our March edition are accidently reflective of the these unique characteristics. Our cover serves as a source of nostalgia and a tip of the hat to history as we roll up the panel doors at Enfield Auto Restoration. The shop is bringing back vehicles from the past antique, classic and vintage sports cars - and owner Ray Millette gives us a tour. At Hastings Farm, a multi-generational farm in Suffield, pride and hard work goes into making wholesome and fresh dairy products. One thing about New England is clear - Irish heritage - Riley’s School of Dance in Enfield and Murphy’s Irish Pub in Agawam serve as our connection to honor St. Patrick’s Day. We also turned the lens on Go Local photographer Jackie Sidor, hit the ice with Special Olympic speed skater Patrick Adams and celebrated local hero Pamela Murphy. It astonishes me that a decade has gone by since arriving as a jobless foreigner (luckily not for long). While I still hold tight to my WNY idiosyncrasies and my heart remains to be torn in separate locations, I’ve grown just as rooted in the legacy of local traditions here in New England - although you’ll NEVER hear me say “idear.” It didn’t take long to notice that this is one of the most naturally alluring places in the country with quaint towns, charming landscapes and intriguing personalities - I love it here. As I sit in my favorite coffee shop to write this month’s note, I take notice of those coming and going throughout the afternoon. Nearly each swing of the heavy wooden door produces a recognizable face and it’s with that appreciation I know that I am home.

! AMBER WAKLEY J ACQUELINE M. SIDOR, JMS ART & PHOTO AND AMBER WAKLEY
O
ver the years Go Local has been fortunate enough to collect a number of talented visual storytellers; you witness their work each month with a pictorial narrative that is nothing short of inspiring. While these incredibly talented photographers have largely hid behind the lens, this month we bring the work Jacqueline Sidor of JMS Art & Photo into focus. Jackie – a sort of Renaissance woman of art – has been a driving force behind this publication, capturing miracle moments that are simply impossible to convey through written words. We met far before this magazine was a reality, which is why I chose to tell her story in a first-person perspective – something I never do – but anything else would seem silly or insincere. Born and raised in Enfield, Jackie always liked “creating” as a kid, but acknowledges that her makings “were never anything special.” While she enjoyed art her focus was centered in drama, playing the clarinet, sports and school clubs. She finally experienced an art class in middle school where she was swiftly placed at the “quiet desk,” an isolated tabletop facing the wall to prevent her from socializing (admittedly, her nickname was “Yackie” in elementary school). Her junior year she began to explore clay in a ceramics class, it was then that she became enamored with the art world. GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 11
JACKIE’S 5TH GRADE CLASS PROUDLY SHOWING OFF THEIR PROJECTS
“I kept taking art classes because I really liked using [that part of] my mind and problem solving,” explains Jackie. “The next year I took visual arts, a photography class and joined art club – I was one of those people who spent all their time in the art room.” During senior planning, where you map out your post-graduation plans with your guidance counselor, Jackie said she was interested in pursuing art as a career. With a prompt disapproving look, she was told business school would be a more realistic goal. To her that sounded awful. So like any good artist, she went against the grain and enrolled into Central Connecticut State University for Art Education. For four years Jackie commuted from Enfield, cramming all of her class credits into two days, often spending fourteen or more hours at school. She immersed herself in the curriculum, taking mural painting, ceramics, photography and art education classes, to name a few. After graduation she applied for a teaching position in Stafford Springs. She became a traveling teacher – of sorts – that brought exciting art programming to West Stafford School, Staffordville School and Stafford Elementary School. She has since rooted herself solely at Stafford Elementary School. The otherwise mundane cinderblock walls in Jackie’s – or Ms. Sidor’s – art room are everything you imagine the perfect art-making space to be. Vibrant underwater sea creatures stand beside grinning monsters while stimulating educational posters serve as a reference for guided discussion. Every inch of the space is intriguing, starting with her quirky-cool personal wardrobe to the “how to clean up” instructables that hang above the sink. Jackie cultivates inventiveness in children, a process that builds self-esteem, creative problem-solving skills and the tools for respecting other peoples’ points of view. It’s these values she appreciates most about art education. “There is so much depth and problem solving in creation, it’s automatic,” says Jackie. “It’s a constant process of creating, then looking back to figure out what you could have done better. The next time you create it is a little different; you improve. It’s a lot like teaching; you’re constantly learning, adjusting and changing. You never stop, it’s a tumbleweed of change.” Jackie acknowledges that we live in a time when kids are always busy and academic pressures are more demanding than ever. While it’s hard to unleash imagination in a distracted mind, the space and her guidance promote playful possibilities. “My kids are pretty hilarious and the way they view the world is pretty interesting. I honestly get a lot of ideas from them, what they come up with is so weird and fun,” laughs Jackie. “They need me to teach them to slow down and have patience. It’s always been difficult for me to pinpoint my favorite part of teaching – I just really love it.” While teaching art education for grades 2-5 is a passion, it’s just a piece of her remarkable portfolio. Her move to Stafford was prompted not only by a teaching position, but to join the growing number of Main Street art initiatives that have
been a catalyst for revitalization in the small mill town. Collaborative mural projJACKIE’S MASTER’S DEGREE PROJECT ects with well-known local artists like Olof Aspelin began her community involveWILL BE ON DISPLAY ment and designing poster art for the Stafford Palace Theater provided the opporAT THE STAFFORD tunity for playful art possibilities (as well as the thesis for her master’s degree). CIDERY IN APRIL In town Jackie and her camera are synonymous, an accessory that she rarely leaves at home. She documents everything, artfully capturing downtown events, concerts and small life moments. Her Go Local repertoire spans subjects like agriculture, food, portraits, landscapes and so much more - each artfully capturing a moment or scene. Whether she’s shooting a wedding or setting up her wellknown traveling photo booth with custom painted backdrops, each shot is inviting, authentic and delightfully unexpected. Jackie’s no-fuss style makes her a breeze to work with and her keen eye creates perspective you never thought possible. It’s hard to believe that she is mainly a self-taught photographer. “When I first got my real camera I didn’t really know what I was doing with it,” admits Jackie. “I knew a lot about photography and art – like composition – but we never covered topics like light and setting up photos. Most everything I have learned about photography has been self-taught through videos on YouTube and just taking a LOT of pictures.” Even though she’s a talker, Jackie is a genuine introvert and the camera is her source of communication. A similar comparison can be made to her recent watercolor projects, completed for the last phase of her master’s degree in education. Inspired by her love of music, the intricate paintings – all of sizable proportions – are distinct in style and depict different psychedelic creatures and animals. Some works took 18+ hours to complete and are a tribute to her incredible patience and talent – one she attributes to hard work and an unwavering commitment to art. The amazing watercolor series and never-been-seen-before originals will be on display at her JMS Graduate Art Show on April 14 at the Stafford Cidery (68 Main Street in Stafford). The free event is held in conjunction with Arts on Main, a monthly art event the second Friday of each month from 6:00pm – 8:00pm. In the years to come Jackie looks forward to illustrating children’s books, continuing her photographic journey and reconnecting with ceramics – all while teaching and capturing images for Go Local, of course. Experiencing and creating is a wonderful process, one Jackie enjoys sharing with others. She says “creating” is contagious and enjoys inspiring art in others. The importance of art is without question and has been best explained by one of Jackie’s students: “Doing things you love or your talent makes you [feel] better when there is a problem. For me that is art,” says Audrey, a fourth grader at Stafford Elementary School. “Expressing yourself is good for you and your feelings. I think everyone should do this [art] because it helps control you from freaking out.”

! MANDY WIETING KERRY RUBIO, BARK AT THE MOON PHOTOGRAPHY
SHEILA & CHIP HAMPDEN, MA Sheila Crouss first saw Chip on the American Lab Rescue website and instantly fell in love. He was living in a foster home in the panhandle of Florida and his foster mom spoke about how sweet and well behaved he was. She said he got along with children, other pets and did well when taken out in public. That was spring of 2008. Chip and his brother had been found as strays and both were adopted in Massachusetts. Sheila remembers how mellow and calm he was, “On the car ride home, he just quietly laid down and slept the whole way.” Sheila owns OCD Pet Sitting, which she does out of her home. Chip seems to enjoy the company. “He shares his home, beds, toys, treats and attention with any dog that comes here. He patiently tolerates puppies jumping on him and wanting to play, he is very tolerant and accepting of them laying in his bed, stealing some of his mother’s attention.” In fact, both canine and human alike are big fans
of Chip. “Everyone that meets him falls instantly in love. He goes trick or treating to all the neighbors’ houses and they keep treats on hand just for him.” Every single day Chip makes Sheila smile and her extraordinary love for him is incredibly endearing. “I love to watch him sleep. He loves to roll in the snow and since he came from Florida I was so worried he was going to hate it, but he loves the snow. He is my best hiking partner although he is usually lagging about 3040 feet behind me, taking his time to sniff and enjoy the smells. He is perfection in a four-legged furry body. He is my salt and pepper handsome boy.” She sums up their relationship perfectly. “Chip is what every person wants when they rescue a dog. You can see his soul in his eyes. He is so loving, sweet, happy and couldn’t be any more perfect than he is. “

Maple Cheddar Dutch Baby Perfect for a snow day, the Maple Cheddar Dutch Baby is a light, airy oven pancake with a savory flair. We have to give props to the food artisans in Vermont for this one, though. First, we love Grafton Village Maple Smoked Cheddar, which is made right outside of Brattleboro, and we sprinkled this on top as we put the batter into the oven. Not only did that offer a cheddary tang, but it crisped the top of the Dutch baby perfectly. Drizzle with maple syrup right when it comes out of the oven, it will heighten the maple flavor. Check out our Countdown on page 58 to purchase fresh, local maple syrup in your area.
1/2 cup plus 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 4 large eggs
Preheat oven to 425F (this is very important!). Whisk together the flour, salt and pepper in a bowl. In another bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk. Whisk the wet and dry ingredients until they are combined. Melt the butter in a 12-inch, preferably cast iron skillet, over medium heat. Let the butter cook until it is brown (2-3 minutes) and swirl it so it coats the whole bottom of the skillet. Pour in the batter and sprinkle the whole thing with the cheese and a pinch of sea salt. Place the skillet in the oven and cook until puffed up and golden brown, about 25 minutes. Serve with real maple syrup.
1/3 cup whole milk 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 1/4 cup shredded maple smoked cheddar cheese sea salt Serves 2-4 34 GO LOCAL MARCH 2017

Ahh, March in New England, that dreary month when there might be snow, there might not. There might be sunshine, there might not. There might be warmer temperatures and there just might not! The trees are without leaves and the melting snow reveals brown, dead grass…nothing very aesthetic to look at. Cabin fever has really set in and as a parent of 3 littles, you are about to pull your hair out! If the kids argue with you one more time about
36 GO LOCAL MARCH 2017
watching more TV or ask if they can ‘watch a show on your phone’ again it might not be out of your realm to unplug the TV and shove it in a closet. But as a healthy alternative you feel like you can’t really send them outside either. Trapped is probably the best word for it. This March with three boys at home and all of them now mobile I am particularly thankful to have a playground/fort in my basement. The uses for this space have proved to be endless. I can banish my boys to the basement and know they are getting exercise, using their imaginations and expelling energy climbing up the stairs, zipping down the slide and a host of other activities that this space has proved inspiration for. When my husband envisioned a fort in our basement as a Christmas present four years ago I thought he was crazy. The list of why it was crazy was mostly because he wanted me to assist him in being the architect and construction worker and have it delivered for December 25th. But the icing on the cake was that it was all to be a SURPRISE! How do you build a fort in your basement, slide and all without your children knowing about it? And manage this all between Halloween and December 24th? It’s not like we have much else going on this time of year.
Since delivering our gift (as a successful surprise) we have enjoyed countless play dates with our indoor fort. I realize that not every house has a fort in the basement which brings me to how you can escape cabin fever this month in your Go Local communities. What our family looks the most forward to about warmer weather is the ability to go outside on a whim…mostly in the early morning when little people are awake and we don’t want to let them just sit in front of the TV any longer or just after dinner as a chance to get that last bit of energy out of our systems and enjoy some fresh air before beginning the bedtime routine. So in the month of March – sunshine or not, we are going to try and get out and about – and as I start to make this a reality I have found there are a host of options. Given the age span of our family - 20 months to 7 years - the most obvious choice for us are local playgrounds. In all of our Go Local communities there are playgrounds that we can access all year round. Last weekend we went out and bundled up with snow boots, snow pants, gloves and hats and had a blast at our local playground. (I admit this was not originally my idea…and I was not as game as this article makes me sound.) We were the only ones there, didn’t need to wait in line for a chance to swing or slide and it sure was easy to spot the boys – 1, 2, 3. No second guessing which children were mine is my idea of a good afternoon out and about. If being outside this time of year really isn’t your thing, there are quite a few indoor options to get you out of the house and burning energy. We have been invited to a few birthday parties at indoor gymnastic centers recently and after a little research it turns out there are quite a few options here in our Go Local towns. What I love most about being at an indoor gymnastics center is the variety of options for the kids. Most offer trampolines and foam pits, big floors with springs underneath for extra high jumps and tumbling. The closest one to our house offers an obstacle course with rope swings and climbing structures as well as some pretty impressive indoor bounce houses. They all offer a variety of options for access whether it be birthday parties, programs for more serious gymnasts or drop in open hours for the general public to come and bounce around and let the kids burn off that excess energy as we all bide our time until Spring is officially here. I am also going to be looking into their summer camp offerings this year. I challenge you to join me in trying to enjoy March with a bit more enthusiasm, adventure and oomph! Spent inside or out it can be a month to remember! As a full-time mom and professional from Wilbraham, CARLY LUDBROOK is navigating this thing called motherhood and parenthood with three beautiful boys. After being told (time after time) that she actually had four boys (four included her spirited, young at heart husband!) her blog, ‘Daddy Makes Four’ was born. Carly brings her adventures to print by sharing ideas, real-life stories and optimistic humor to the pages of Go Local - after all - us parents are all in this together!

SHIRAN ASULIN HOME-BASED THERAPIST FROM LONGMEADOW, MA
A MBER WAKLEY
What is Applied Behavior Analysis?
ABA is the science of human behavior. It considers environmental variables that influence behavior. The objective is to improve socially significant behaviors in order to enhance the overall well-being of an individual.
Who do you serve?
I work with children who are diagnosed with autism to build foundational learning skills that are necessary for their transition to preschool. Most of my clients receive early intervention support as well as applied behavior analysis.
What are your responsibilities as a home-based therapist? I meet clients weekly for in-home therapy sessions. I begin by assessing the individual needs of the client and tailoring a program focused on improving daily habits, social communication, and academic skills. I collect data during each session and make adjustments to maximize the productivity of each session. I am also responsible for teaching valid techniques and strategies to parents so that they can support their child’s growth. After several months or years of treatment, I help parents transition their child to preschool to ensure the school will offer the appropriate in-class services.
What are some of the bright spots of your work? Watching my clients gain basic skills that will help them for the rest of their lives. I love helping parents to understand the needs of their children. There is nothing more rewarding than knowing that I am able to make a measurable difference in the lives of my clients and their families.
When I’m not working, you’ll find me… Most likely studying at the library! My graduate program keeps me busy. I love spending time with my family and friends, dancing, doing yoga, cooking, and snowboarding!
What do you like most about your community?
I love that my community is blended, and that there is diversity among my friends, colleagues, and neighbors. I was raised in Longmeadow, moved to Springfield, and now live in Enfield. I have been lucky with the opportunities that I have been given, and feel proud to take action by educating others who deserve an equal opportunity in life, and by advocating for their needs.
My greatest inspirations are…
My parents… they are the most selfless people I know. They are teachers, and have dedicated their lives to education and helping others. Through them, I have learned the importance of patience and hard work, and doing all things with passion.

CASSIE, K.T. & BRENNA
! AMBER WAKLEY AMELIA INGRAHAM
K.T. DaSilva was born to dance; after all she grew up at Riley’s School of Dance in Enfield, a tradition started by her
mother, Marion Walsh Riley in 1939. With her daughters Brenna and Cassie at her side on the ballet bar, the three carry on a tradition of excellence that humbly began over seventy-five years ago. After moving to Enfield from New Britain with K.T.’s father, Marion first began teaching young dancers in church halls and schools before opening the studio in its current location. Part of the Southwood Acres community, the stu-
GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 45
dio was eventually built in the same plaza as The Village Market, a small grocery store operated by K.T.’s father. She “lived” at the studio, spending the weekends there with her mom and sister while her brothers helped at the grocery store. “I never knew anything different,” says K.T. about growing up at the dance studio. “Back in the day everyone used to get on the bus and go to Springfield for shopping – I didn’t do that. My life was going to the studio every Saturday and when I was old enough, I looked after the books. Later, I took classes and started teaching. I felt like sometimes I was missing out, but this was my life.” She says many milestones took place in the small plaza on Raffia Road, from birthday parties next door at Ann’s Pizza to ultimately introducing the world of dance to her own children. She continued her dance education at Central Connecticut State University and was eager to return back to the community where she grew up. Brenna, who started dancing before her second birthday, began instruction at an unusually young age. “At about age twelve I started helping my grandma on Saturdays, instructing her baby classes,” remembers Brenna. “Even when I went to college I was instructing all the way through and would come home on weekends – I couldn’t get away from it.” After graduation Brenna studied with the pre-professional program at the Hartford Ballet, toured in productions of the American Nutcracker and graduated from Sacred Heart University she was on the SHU dance team all four years. 46 GO LOCAL MARCH 2017
Cassie also started at a young age and remembers her early days in the studio, “Grandma was the only one that ever kicked me out.” An admittedly rambunctious kid with an affection for tap dance, she worked in San Diego and Portland before returning home to teach and handle the business aspects of the studio. The ladies remember their mom and grandmother as a booming spirit; her passion instilled a love for dance and commitment to the community they call home. Well known, Marion drove around in a pink Ford Probe known as “the ballet slipper,” and was instructing students just two weeks before her passing. “She was very direct with a booming voice, but the kids loved her,” says Brenna. “Our grandma was just so loud and wonderful,” says Cassie smiling. “She was strict, but really kind…she was quite the character and so much fun.” In Marion’s life she created a foundation for cultivating wellrounded dancers, both in technical skill and character – a powerful tradition that continues at Riley’s today. The three – along with a group of dedicated instructors, many of whom danced at Riley’s as kids – offer an incredible range of classes including ballet, pre-pointe, pointe, tap, jazz, gymnastics, hip hop, lyrical, Zumba, modern and Irish Step. Above all they are stewards of the community and they teach their students to be as such. Collectively, Riley’s School of Dance donates thousands of dollars each year to both local and national charities while volunteering at Enfield Loaves and Fishes on a monthly basis. For them it’s not only important to grow technique, but to also grow beautiful people.
Their annual Christmas show – originally created for Kim’s Kause, a memorial fund named after a former student – is an annual fundraiser designed to raise money for local charities and families in need during the holiday season. It’s a massive production featuring Riley Dancers, alumni-run silent auction and raffle prize fundraiser. Along with ticket sales, the group has raised a massive amount of money – $16,000 this year alone. “It’s a lot of money and something wonderful for these kids to know that they were a part in helping raise,” says K.T. “Our kids choose where the money is donated – I think we’ve supported every animal cause in the country.” Over the years they’ve distributed thousands to organizations like Hole in the Wall Camp, Malta House of Care, Big Sky Camp, and St. Jude’s. They fixed the vehicles of local veterans, provided food assistance to pets in need and even covered surgery costs for a local dog that was hit by a car. Typically held at Fermi High School, the event will be moving to Enfield High in 2017, an auditorium that allows for additional seating and increased revenue. “We also have a scholarship fund in my mom’s name, we’ve given over $200,000 away. I read the essays of these kids and their experiences of dance - their essays are beautiful – that’s when you realize the impact,” K.T. shares tearfully. With 330 students enrolled, the studio is a place where friends become family and lasting bonds are created over years of support, hard work and shared experiences. “Some of these kids are with us from when they are babies to the time they graduate. It’s special,” says Brenna. “We really are
a studio for everyone. Some kids are with us four or five times a week and take ten classes. It’s their life. We have others that come for one or two classes - they are great kids who come to have fun just because they love to dance.” “A lot of our students become friends and then their parents become friends, it’s a tight group,” explains Cassie. “It brings people together. Our students aren’t just from Enfield, but surrounding communities.” While Riley’s puts on a large recital in June, fierce dance competitions are not a part of this community. The studio emphasizes proper dance technique and form, but the experience is based more on personal growth. “Our kids have goals within the studio that they want to meet, whether it’s personal “bests” or getting into an advanced class. There are goals within our studio that students can meet; there’s healthy competition, but not a rivalry.” “Working hard is what we strive for,” says Cassie. “Every student has their own abilities and they are their own being. You don’t always have to be the best – it’s life – but you can always improve.” “We are truly blessed with the people we have involved here and I’m not just saying that - they are the best,” concludes K.T. “Dance is not a science, it’s an art and you should feel beautiful dancing no matter what, because that’s what you are.” RILEY'S SCHOOL OF DANCE • 99 RAFFIA RD, ENFIELD, CT • (860) 763-0279 RILEYSSCHOOLOFDANCE.COM

Dr Robert Howe, director of the Reproductive Medicine Center of Western Massachusetts, has the only practice providing this cutting edge Phototherapy treatment in Western Massachusetts. Interested readers are urged to consult www.roberthowemd.com or to call the RMC at 413 525 5160.

Sarah Martin’s inspiration for SoulChi was born over 7 years ago as a way to capture fingerprints on a pendant. Today, she sits with clients and helps them design remarkable one-of-a-kind pieces. She takes their unique designs and molds them into a pendant made from recycled silver. They can be made from photographs, drawings, signatures, stamps or other jewelry. Sarah says, “Each piece is custom designed by my customers and completely handcrafted from the design stage to the creation. The messages that I hold dear to my heart are the ones created as a token of love to be given as their last gift.” Contact Sarah to host a jewelry party or for a oneon-one consultation.

RapStix is owned and operated by Jamie & Stacy Collins. The idea for RapStix was created in 2008 after Jamie watched his son and 6 other 12 year olds enthusiastically wanting to spend a lot of money on new hockey shafts simply for a new look. He thought, “Why not develop a product that could be applied to an existing shaft, was affordable enough that players could change designs at will, was durable, easy to apply, easy to remove and came in numerous designs?” And so RapStix was born. Visit their website to see a wide variety of ready-made styles or to customize one for your team. RapStix are available for lacrosse, golf, hockey, broomball, curling and floorball. 54 GO LOCAL MARCH 2017

Jeff Stigliano moved to Ellington in 2014 and started a garden with different varieties of plants to test recipes that he felt would best highlight the produce typically grown here. Building on his experience as a restaurant chef, he was able to develop products that both showcased the freshness and quality of locally grown fruits and vegetables that made for great prepared foods such as salsa, pickles, relishes, jams, hot sauce and a family marinara recipe that goes back many generations. This led to the founding of the Jobs Hill Provision Co. in 2016. Purchase their delicious products at the Ellington Winter Market at the YMCA, 11 Pinney Street on March 11 and 25 and choose your favorite.
