DADAAB REFUGEE CAMP, KENYA
TYPICAL REFUGEE HOUSING Refugee camps should showcase the best in humanity. By their very nature, they are a safe haven for all those who have experienced immense hardship in their lives. Unfortunately, camps were never really meant to do much beyond serve as a temporary shelter. But with refugees staying in camps for multiple decades, it becomes clear that these places must take on more of a role than just shelter. They should become a home to the thousands of refugees that are without one. One of the biggest issues that we felt could be addressed was strengthening the community’s bond. When a group of people can meet their neighbors and form a relationship, the community grows stronger. The camp becomes something greater than just temporary housing, and something that the refugees can look to as a positive in their lives. In large camps such as Dadaab and Zaatari, the shelters are split up into blocks, like any average suburb. But on each block, the shelters are hastily set up. We felt that dividing the camp up into blocks could inhibit residents from interacting with their neighbors, and therefore wanted to minimize this suburban block system. The free-for-all style of laying out the shelters on each block also caught our attention as a poor utilization of valuable land. By laying out units in groups on a grid (see next page,) the camp begins to feel more like a village, with open public spaces in between shelters to serve as areas for residents to freely socialize.

PRIVATE YARDS
BETER DEFINED PUBLIC SPACE
-Hexagon system allows for units to be placed within a specific boundary, ensuring a more efficent shelter layout
-Indents in unit groupings create a semi-private space, giving inhabitants a more defined place to converse with neighbors
-As residents move through the clusters of units, the open spaces in between the shelters define a more public meeting place that previous housing layouts such as Dadaab do not offer.

Sundsvall
Access to water is an important attribute for cities to thrive. A lot of cities in Sweden have taken advantage of the bodies of water around to grow. Sundswall is built around the river Selangersan and the coast near the Gulf of Bothnia.
The diversified vegetation in Sweeden and climate are appropiate . The refugees could plant their own crops and then assimilate into the economic system of the region.
