NEW ZEALAND

for health & well-being

PUBLISHED SINCE 1956

March 2018 MAGAZINE OF THE NEW ZEALAND NATURIST FEDERATION INC

The magazine for freedom lovers and those who embrace the naturist way of life characterised by the practice of communal nudity with the intention of encouraging self-respect, respect for others and the environment. The benefits of naturism are wide and varied, from health benefits to therapy; from getting close to nature and the simple pleasures of pure freedom...let us show you how you and your body can benefit from the lifestyle that is nude recreation - or naturism. It’s good for your health. Measured sun exposure and vitamin D is very good for you. Naturism is more about doing normal, everyday activities, without the encumbrance of clothing and helps in prevention of many diseases from rickets to some forms of cancer (including melanoma), arthritis, osteoporosis, diabetes, asthma and cardiovascular disease. Mental health - Being naked outdoors on a sunny day isn’t sexual, but it is sensual – a delight to your senses. Self Esteem - An increase in euphoria, naturism helps to increase confidence and self esteem. Lifestyle - Experience the true ‘freedom’ of exposing your whole body to nature’s elements. Freedom - gain a sense of freedom when you remove the ‘entrapments of civilisation’ Recreation and Enjoyment - enjoy sports and many active pursuits.

“To be offended by the visual appearance of another person is prejudice, akin to racism. The right to exist, uncovered, should hold precedence over the right not to view this, for the objection is irrational” - Terri Sue Webb

W

e have had one of the most wonderful summers for years - with so many naturist activities happening around the country. The mainstream media has been prolific in nudist stories, and this has boosted positive discussion and participation in activities. It wasn’t difficult choosing this month’s wonderful cover photo that I snapped of 6-year-old Fergus from Morrinsville. Along with his sister Sophie and grandfather Graham, Fergus spent most of his time in the swimming pool at the Rally at Te Marua, Upper Hutt, Wellington. Naturism offers many positive values for children and their families. It’s non-judgemental and teaches such healthy attitudes towards bodies. The Rally was a wonderful gathering of people who come together with a shared belief in holding our naturist values high and respecting others. It is a celebration of our bodies, our lives and the pursuit of genuine freedom . In this issue, Mike Ward contributes some important ideas about protecting and strengthening naturism in New Zealand in the wake of a growing population and ever-encroaching urban development. The annual meeting of the NZ Naturist Federation, held at the start of the 66th Rally, heralded some notable accolades. Retiring secretary June Campbell-Tong, was inducted as an Honorary Life Member. John Lowe was awarded the Pat Trott Achievement Trophy, and the Joyce Fleming trophy, acknowledging his exceptional service to Free Beaches NZ. Other awards: Best story in gonatural magazine for 2017 went to Daniel Copeland [‘The ethics and etiquette of nudity’, and the year’s best photograph was awarded to Cathy Sneyd [cover #241 June 2017]. The best media story went to Annemarie Quinn of Bay of Plenty Times; best club newsletter for the second year, went to Free Beaches NZ; best website Going na utical Nelson Sun Club; Taranaki Naturist Club took home the Mowlem Membership Achievement Trophy.

My husband and I visited one of Sydney’s nude beaches, a particularly gorgeous cove of cream-coloured sand and turquoise sea, hidden behind green jungle. The beach was patronized mostly by gay men, but lightly sprinkled with a few women. Before removing our swimwear we took a reconnaissance walk along the shore. It was then that we noticed a small red boat hurtling toward us. It looked like the Coast Guard. “Uh oh,” we joked, “they’re coming to tell us that we have to get naked.” The skiff came to a stop right in front of us. That’s when we noticed the captain, a wetsuit-wearing Kenny G look-alike. Unsure of his motives, we took a step back, watching transfixed as he dropped anchor and then began to merrily ring a loud bell. Suddenly, the formerly placid beach became animated. Hearing the jaunty tune, the nudes jumped off their towels, sauntering toward the boat. They lined up, clutching their wallets That’s when we realized... It’s the ice cream man! Gotta. Love. Australia. - Heather Hope, Sydney (New York Times) I’m a Christchurch-based artist, and I do life drawings. I’m always looking for models who would like to come and sit. I also carve pounamu (greenstone). Please drop me an email if you are interested: blakerass@hotmail.com - Jon Jeet, Christchurch We are members of the Rotota Sun Club, in the central North Island’s volcanic thermal region. It is undoubtedly one of the most unique naturist clubs in New Zealand, if not the world! It may seem a big claim, but talk to anyone who has visiting this amazing place, and you’ll know why. We also have a large membership of around 200. In recent months, following a change in the committee a year or so ago, numerous rule changes are being planned, without involving the membership, something that shouldn’t be allowed! The first lot of by-laws proposed, appeared as two pages in our latest club newsletter and included ‘no more than 3 single males on the grounds at the same time’ along with other micro-managing instructions! There appears to be a desire not allow anyone other than members to use Rotota, which is just crazy, and along with such stupid visitor rules, there’s a lot of us very upset about this. They created a code of behaviour that stated to ‘cover up any sexual arousal’ ..such incidents are very rare and can be dealt with directly, not by a club rule! Let’s hope common sense prevails and the club is restored to the way it has been running, with no troubles about visitors who come along and enjoy and share our bit of paradise. - L M, O W & T F [names withheld]

I’d like to offer a very special thanks also to the Wellington Naturist Club for hosting this spectacular juggernaut that was the rally at our club grounds over the December / January holidays. I would like to thank everyone for coming along and participating in such a unique experience and supporting our pioneering spirits. - Constance Gervasi, Wellington So the news media in NZ are silent. They got their titillating story about response to the Day Without Togs before the event, but there was nothing “newsworthy” on the day! No orgies on the beach, no kids abused, no police arrests of naked people, no naked riots between naturists and perverts. How sad; just a great day at the beach! Congrats to Wendy Lowe and the Free Beaches team for the great PR leading up to this year’s January event. - Len Thomson, Auckland I saw your group’s president comment about International Day without Togs. If you want to go around nake [sic] in your own backyard that is your business but in public where little children are, stay home! You may think it brings freedom but the type of freedom is not good for society. Think about it as young guys go to the beach and they see attractive ladies naked what do you think it will do to them? You know the answer. In relation, being turned on, what do you think it make them want to do? Approach the girls. If the girls say “no” do you think all the turned on Guys will accept their answer? How about if they have been drinking? Then if nature takes its course regardless by agreement(both parties say yes) or by force(the girl is forced against her will to) then what do we have? More babies to ladies who may not be ready for, want, able to handle, or financially capable of looking after a child. So you need think about your choices. You may have a right but do you think it brings more positive or negative effects. I think you guys need to stay home and repent of your sins. Ephansians [sic] 5. God made the body to be enjoyed by a MAN AND A WOMAN but not in public. It is a great thing about being MARRIED! As many non Christians don’t realise that the body is beautiful and God made it. God intended the body, sex, etc for pleasure but it in certain contexts like 2 people who are married. (Song of Solomn [sic] 4). - Bob & Debbie Turlington, Coromandel [Around the world there are many Christian naturist/nudist groups and clubs that advocate and believe that their religion can coexist in a mutually respectful way - after all, the human body was made in God’s image, if you follow that belief, therefore there is nothing to be ashamed of. - Ed]

Public swimming change rooms attacked A Palmerston North engineer has said that adults should use private cubicles when getting undressed in public changing rooms, if there are children around. Shabbir Ahmed said he was a the city’s Lido Aquatic swimming pool and noticed a child become upset after seeing a man undressing. “The father of the kid put a towel over his face and said ‘don’t look over there’,” Ahmed said. “It does not leave a positive impact on a child’s brain” he told Manawatu Standard. The Palmerston North pool had increased the number of ‘family rooms’. “A lot more people are reserved than there used to be,” pool manager Lynden Noakes says. “Back in the day people used to go in there and get changed and wouldn’t care who was standing there. Now they like to be more private.” Clinical psychology Dr Kirsty Ross of Massey University said she had not come across research suggesting nudity in changing rooms had negative lasting effects on children. An extensive 2016 UK report ‘Children deserve better’ by British Naturism, concluded that bringing children up in such an 4

Some residents on Waiheke Island are up in arms over a beach that has had a long history of nude bathing. “I am not against nudity, my main concern is people swimming nude in front of people, making them uncomfortable and forcing their nudity on someone,” local Micah Courtney said. Onetangi and Palm beaches, were generally known as nudist areas, but had no formal classification, reported the Waiheke Marketplace. However beaches in New Zealand don’t require official status for anyone to strip off. “I’m all for ‘embracing your body’ but there was a time and place,” said Jessica Powell McIntyre. “I’d be mad as hell if my son had to see some shrivelled up penis and think it’s okay for men and woman to expose their parts around him.” Frankie Hill who has lived on Waiheke Island for many years. “When I swim naked, I feel much freer and more connected to the ocean,” Hill said. “It’s like the difference between walking barefoot and walking with shoes on. Skimpy little togs are weird - they draw attention to the body parts we fetishise in our culture.” Other residents say swimming naked helped stop tiny jellyfish like sea-lice, from getting trapped under swimwear and stinging, and giving an itchy rash. “It’s a positive thing to see nudity beginning to enter the public eye more,” 35-year old Liz Weaver said. “The sooner we overcome the nudity taboo the better - and swimming and bathing is a natural time to be unclothed. Seeing naked people on beaches can help people realise that all bodies are unique,” she told the Waiheke Marketplace. In January, the NZNF and Free Beaches NZ, held a nationwide event A Day Without Togs to promote acceptance of nudity on public beaches. l RADIO tinyurl.com/MikeWard15March2018

A Sumner Beach surf coach in Christchurch snapped a photo of two lads showering naked at the outdoor showers street side. “I don’t actually hate tourists or nudity for that matter, it can be great fun,” said Seb Johnson. “I shared the photo online and it was completely done in satire and was taking the micky. I am glad it has made some people laugh. It was great to get discussion and obviously there’s some passion on both sides.” Debate was passionate with a majority saying there was nothing wrong or offensive. “It’s just like the good old days”, “This is exactly why I love Sumner beach,” said some . Some locals said that children shouldn’t have to see such a sight, that it was not appropriate behaviour and was ‘illegal to do that kind of thing outside’. Howevre many were were relaxed about the commotion and said it is a normal way to wash after a swim at the beach. “Do you leave clothes on to have a shower at home? Of course not!” In New Zealand, it’s perfectly legal to be naked outside, so long as there was no intent to offend. Police told the NZ Herald there was no specific offence for being naked in public, however, anyone who is concerned for their safety or the safety of others should contact police. “Each incident of nudity reported to police will be dealt with on a caseby-case basis and may fall under the following offences depending on those circumstances: Section 4 and Section 27 of the Summary Offences Act 1981, or Section 125 of the Crimes Act 1961,” the police said. Section 27 states ‘intentionally and obscenely exposes any part of his or her genitals.’

Christchurch beach showers spark nude debate

“I’ll say it again for those questioning what i stand for and how i express myself. nudity started as a movement for ‘going back to nature’, ‘expressing freedom’, ‘being healthier’ and was even called a philosophy. being naked is part of what makes us human. for me it helps me feel more connected to mama gaia. i’m usually naked when i garden. it’s actually a beautiful thing and you don’t have to make it sexual the way many hollywood stars (and the media) do. not only is your body a temple and should be worshipped as so, but also part of feminism is being able to express yourself in your own way, whether it’s being conservative and wearing lots of clothes or showing yourself. there’s different ways of absorbing mother earth’s energy, my favorites are earthing which is absorbing the earths vibrations from contact between the soil and your bare feet, as well as letting your

naked skin absorb the rays of the sun. the human body is a beautiful thing and no matter what “flaws” you have, whether it be scars, or extra weight, stretch marks, freckles, whatever, it is beautiful and you should express yourself however you feel comfortable. if this makes some of you upset i completely understand and i encourage you to maybe no longer follow me, but i cannot apologize for this in any way. it is who i am and i refuse to shy away and keep my beliefs a secret. every one as an opinion and every one has their beliefs. we don’t always agree with one another and that’s okay. but again, we are all human, and to appreciate the things that other people do that make us human helps us feel connected. how can that be a bad thing? Aotearoa

2018 gonatural 244 244March March 2018 10 gonatural

14 days. 9 hours. 20 minutes. 3,029 kms C

ycling from Cape Reinga to Bluff, the very top of New Zealand to the southernmost point of Te Waipounamu / South Island, was another extraordinary achievement for veteran multi-sport athlete and naturist Nick Lowe.

ARRIVED BLUFF: 28th February 9:39 pm Distance cycled: 3,029 km

Nick Lowe cycling for 3 hours on Ninety Mile Beach, western coast, North Island, New Zealand. It stretches from west of Kaitaia towards Cape Reinga along the Aupouri Peninsula.

600 cyclists set out in mid-February to conquer the epic adventure known as Tour Aotearoa, only the second time the event has been held. Nick rides a 29” carbon fibre Giant XTC, without rear shocks, to allow more carry space for his tent and food. The mammoth journey requires multiple disciplines of endurance and a determined attitude. No support vehicles follow the route and riders have to be self-sufficient including food and a place to rest every night. The event is one of the world’s great bikepacking trips, stretching over 3,000km. It follows a combination of cycle trails, tracks, paths and lanes connected by the most enjoyable country roads available. The route was designed by guidebook authors, the Kennett brothers. “Of course I can’t ride the entire route naked, I probably would if I could, but the weather determines a lot,” Nick Lowe says. “The days can be long and hard, and I cycled between 12 to 14 hours every day. While you’re on the bike for that long, you need protection for your bum! Some days I had to wear two pairs of bike pants, because blisters are a very real problem.” Whilst there’s few rules for the tour, which is not meant to be a race, most take between 10 and 30 days to complete the journey. “When I had the opportunity to ride naked, I didn’t get a single negative comment, just others cheering me on. With a tailwind on Ninety Mile Beach, I was doing 35 kph, passing others and feeling bulletproof, without clothes. I encounted every kind of weather imaginable, while effects of Cyclone Gita was heading towards the north west of New Zealand.” l gonatural

Celebrating

Wellington’s naturist club at Te Marua was transformed into a pioneer village for the 66th rally over the summer. PHOTOGRAPHY Michael Karav & Michael P Moore

I understand why everyone loves to attend rallies,” Constance Gervasi says. “It was a wonderful week of warm camaraderie, friendly rivalry and sportsmanship, and even the weather played ball.” Constance led a team from the Wellington Naturist Club to transform their grounds into the Te Marua Pioneer Village. “These events wouldn’t exist without participation but most importantly, they wouldn’t exist without the organisation and team-work that goes on behind the scenes.” The New Zealand Naturist Federation held it’s 66th rally at Upper Hutt over the summer. Around 150 attended, and a number of children. gonatural 244 244March March2018 2018 12 gonatural

A variety of food trucks and a coffee cart helped provide fresh meals, as well as some catered meals and salad bar to go with evening BBQs. President of the NZNF Donna Miller congratulated the organisers for providing an exceptional rally and those who attended. “The theme was ‘pioneer’ in which we remember, respect and appreciate the pioneering spirit in which we established a national organisation in New Zealand 60 years ago,” says Donna Miller. “I believe the pioneers of the naturist movement in New Zealand would have been thrilled and proud of the efforts in delivering such a rally with a beautiful family vibe, where old friends reconnected and new friendships were forged,” Donna says.

The programme included a catered dinner with a 1960s theme and special presentation commemorating the 60th anniversary of the founding of the NZ Federation, with a audiovisual throughout the early years. “We acknowledged the significant milestones through the decades and we were all honoured to have our life members Norman Bell of Napier, Les Olsen from Auckland and Kay Hannam from Marlborough, who have all given much to naturism over the decades. We lean on them for their experience and wisdom,” Donna said. “June CampbellTong was presented with Honorary Life Membership, joining this select group of people. The rally was a fitting celebration and acknowledgement of

ng 60 years

the past 60 years, and a very appropriate way to herald in the next decades and milestones,” says Donna. The September 1957 publication of The Naturist Review, Gerald Wakely outlined the concept of a national organisation with recommendations in an article called The First Steps [reprinted page 33]. There were nine clubs already in existence: Kaurimu Sun Club, Auckland Sun Club, Auckland Outdoor Health Club, Waikato Health Club, Gisborne Sun Club, Wanganui Sun Club, Wellington Sun and Health Society, Canterbury Sun and Health Club, and Otago Sun and Health Club. At the sixth national rally, held in 1957 at Canterbury Sun and Health Club, a decision was made about the establishment of the National Association and the above-mentioned clubs became affiliated and the NZ Sunbathing Association was established in January 1958. In a coincidental comparison to the Te Marua Pioneer Village Rally held in January this year, editor of The National

Review Stewart Ransom said “It was an event permeated with the pioneering spirit...” talking about the 1957 rally in Canterbury. The first national officers were Percy Cousins, national organiser; Stewart Ransom, public relations officer; Gerald Wakely, overseas contributor; and Russell Hopkins, legal officer. After an annual meeting in June 1977, the organisation name was changed to New Zealand Naturist Federation. Gerald Wakely stated that the objective was “to provide an organisation through which naturists throughout New Zealand can combine to develop the movement.” The grounds of clubs were established with entirely manual labour and much back-breaking work. Swimming pools were dug, halls were built, ablution blocks were constructed and everyone from the youngest members to the oldest, helped in some way to construct the facilities across the country. However, it hasn’t been all work and no play. Since 1953, members of clubs around New Zealand have been gathering

each year for a national festival or rally. The first two were held at Wanganui Sun Club followed by Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington. From 1975, rallies took on a theme which have been embraced and enjoyed by participants. Rallies in the past are not much different from those of today - a chance to reconnect with old friends and the opportunity to make some new connections. Sports such as swimming, miniten, tenniquoits, petanque, and more recently kubb, have been played for the honour of the club, but in the spirit of true sportsmanship and respect to all players. What a ffff... fun rally! David Saunders shares his observations about the 66th Naturist Rally at Te Marua... The ‘f’ word could be applied to the Te Marua Pioneer Village Rally. The organising team can take a bow for such fabulous, fun and friendly functions and a finale to 2017 plus a fantastic start to 2018, with plenty of fellowship and food trucks thrown in for good measure! Not everyone attends a rally for the sport, however given the number of entries for pétanque and kubb, it is little wonder that they now dominate the programme when compared to the old favourites of tenniquoits and miniten. If one of the objectives is to promote good fellowship, then that was well and truly achieved. It must always present a challenge to try and herd competitors who enter everything from chess to volleyball to the various venues to ensure they do not hold up others who may also wish to participate in archery or bike riding. The team from Pineglades who came, saw and conquered - in virtually all the land based sports. On an individual basis, Peter Bennetts dominated in the medal count in chess, draughts,pétanque miniten and tenniquoits with a haul of 7 medals. When offered up to other clubs at the Percy Cousins auction, a measly $80 was the best offer before a telephone bid from his home club got $100. Pineglades dominated the miniten with all but two titles going to a strong team. One of the medal winners was Stanton Burrows who is now in his 80s, still playing like a 60 year old! The highlight of the rally for most was the social events which were so well organised: wine and cheese meet and greet, pot luck dinner, karaoke, outdoor movies, Rimutaka bike ride, the social programme was varied and engaging. Cohen Holloway, a local comedian, struck a chord followed by an outdoor screening he stared in, Good for Nothing filmed in Otago. The local Lions club staged a casino night. New Years Eve, with a dress-up theme of ‘pioneer’, saw some spectacular outfits. If there is to be one real highlight of the rally, it has to be the special presentation of 60 years of the NZNF. must be congratulated on her efforts to produce a fabulous digital presentation which showed the progress achieved by clubs and members over 60 years, and how the Federation binds us together. It was wonderful to see life members present at the dinner and acknowledged, then joined by the announcement of June Campbell-Tong as the newest member. June had just stood down as the NZNF secretary after serving 10 years. June also contributed hugely to the success of the International Congress held in Wellington, November 2016. The Percy Cousins Trust auction raised $2000, a fund that does a great deal

to assist clubs with development of facilities. What the Pioneer Rally demonstrated is that with a little bit of thought and a great deal of planning and commitment, all participants can leave with fond memories. Congratulations to Constance Gervasi and her team as well as the president of the Wellington Club, Ken Mercer, who was everywhere ensuring we were well looked after. In short, a fantastic effort by the host club which sets the bar for the next year. Let’s hope another club rise to the challenge before Hawkes Bay take their turn at the end of 2019. l

opinion

Safeguarding natur in a growing popula As population density increases, Mike Ward asks how our lifestyle will adapt

N

ews that New Zealand’s population is headed towards 6.8m in the next 20 years - it could be in half that time - should concern all naturists. Whether a club, backyard or beach is your sanctuary, it will be affected, unless we can achieve the general normalising and acceptance of naturism in the collective mind of the public and law enforcement agencies. The challenge to achieve the normalising of nudity is further compounded by the dysfunctional attitudes of the increasingly predominately US-controlled broadcast, printed and online social media. The corporate media has an overtly anti-nudity policy – ostensibly due to ’culturally-sensitive’ concerns about its worldwide membership. As we know, the US entertainment media is proviolence – it is just fine to expose children to extreme violence – mainly when it is a depersonalised large-scale such as warfare and battle. But the naked human body? “No, no” they protest – that will harm our children! So, the main basis of future complaints about nudity will be the ‘harm’ to children. As we know, this is a sham – a mask to cover adult prudery under the worthy guise of ‘protecting’ children. The increasing population density in all western cities manifests buildings closer together, smaller sections, subdivision of existing sections and multi-storey dwellings. All these directly destroy privacy and seclusion. Even if one is lucky enough to find a secluded section, how long will it last before development encroaches on it? The naturist community and its leaders need to develop strategies to meet these challenges. To deal with the intensification of development, I propose the formal definition of the ‘Naturist Venue’ as a known and registered place

gonatural 244 244 March March2018 2018 24 gonatural

where people practice nudism and can be expected to be seen naked at any time. I propose that New Zealand’s national naturist body – the Federation, considers setting up a register of ‘naturist venues’ for national use by government agencies, such as councils, DOC, environment agencies and (hopefully never) the police and legal defence lawyers. The register would include privately owned spaces such as club grounds and residential rear gardens. A fund could be established which could be used to assist with legal costs in defending challenges to a registered ‘naturist venue’. Perhaps levies will be required to operate it, or the Percy Cousins Trust fund could be used to seed this. After all, the protection and furtherance of naturism was the original intention behind the fund. What is the difference, from a legal viewpoint, in a back garden with one or two naked people, and club grounds where there are just one or two naked people present? None, I would suggest, since a ‘naturist club’ or ‘naturist venue’ is not defined in law. My point is that a ‘venue’ can actually be a club, home, beach, lake, or a secluded river spot. We should therefore anticipate issues and put in place measures to protect our lifestyle. The objective is to demonstrate that we naturists have taken reasonable and demonstrable measures to inform purchasers of adjacent or encroaching properties with windows overlooking a registered naturist venue, so that the responsibility becomes the purchaser of the encroaching property – that they ‘accept’ the situation, just as much as if they buy a house on a busy road, or near a motor-race track, a factory or airport, they can’t complain about noise. Consider how it could operate in the case of a residential rear garden, registered as

a ’naturist venue’. If the owner received information that a new development or property extension would encroach on the privacy of the venue, then a registered ‘signed-for’ letter would be sent to the developers, solicitors and/or real estate agents acting for the vendors. This would be a formal notice that the development would encroach on, or provide visibility to naked people and that the responsibility for advising any purchasers of the property of this rests with the agencies concerned, and that any purchaser must be duly informed as disclosure of pertinent and relevant information. Perhaps it could even be incorporated into LIM reports? The developer/purchaser has to take suitable screening measures such as fencing or tree planting, at their expense. The Real Estate Agents Act 2008 and Code of Conduct has a rule for licensed Real Estate Agents:Rule 6.4 provides: a licensee must not mislead a customer or client, nor provide false information, nor withhold information that should by law or in fairness be provided to a customer or client. The advantage of a formal operation of this scheme by a recognised body such as the New Zealand Naturist Federation is that the venue owner may not need to engage in any potentially confrontational correspondence or meetings. It could be professionally managed. If the developers or their agencies did not pass on any notified information to a purchaser, who subsequently discovers that they can see naked people, then their claim would be against the agency that failed to inform them, not the venue owners. Otherwise, well, they were advised! We already know that non-sexual or nonthreatening nakedness is not illegal, so sunbathing or gardening naked should not be either. It can’t then be a police

rism ation matter, it becomes a civil matter, and as I said earlier, the claim is against the agency that failed to pass on formallysupplied information, which can be proved to have been delivered to that agency. The UK’s Crown Prosecution Service has made significant progress in anticipating this issue by establishing the rights of nudists in their own property [ tinyurl. com/UKnudity ] which provides guidance when dealing with complaints about nudity. For example, when considering whether being naked on one’s own property constitutes an offence, it states: - “A naturist whose intention is limited to going about his or her lawful business naked will not be guilty of this offence.” Gardening, house maintenance and sunbathing are all lawful business, when wearing clothes, so clothing is, or should be, irrelevant. Free Beaches NZ takes this responsibility for non-urban space – beaches and countryside. Some time ago the organisation collected statistics on naturist usage of beaches, for similar purposes as proposed above. Naturist clubs were originally located in unpopulated areas, so they did not have to concern themselves with encroaching development. However beaches, countryside and clubs, all now find that they are surrounded by housing development, so the issue and challenges will be more prevalent. The scheme may take some time to get up and running and to establish it, however, over time it would become respected by the authorities. Free Beaches NZ information on beaches is now cited by media and has been incorporated into the Government’s online encyclopaedia: teara.govt.nz/en/naturism. We have work to do and the population clock is ticking! l gonatural gonatural 244 244March March2018 2018 25

ellington Rowing Club’s 2018 calendar contains as much heart as it does cheek. This is the second annual naked calendar that has allowed the rowers to get behind a great cause. “Like our rowing, we take the topic of health very seriously, particularly around mental health,” says Jamie HindleDaniels. “It’s a topic which is traditionally considered taboo amongst kiwi blokes, so we are very pleased to support the Mental Health Foundation. It’s an issue that affects everyone, from all walks of life, either directly or indirectly. It’s particularly relevant to New Zealanders due to the classic kiwi bloke attitude, and being a crew of young men we’re bringing awareness to the issue by stripping our clothes off we’re stripping down that stereotype”. As rewarding as the sport of rowing is, it comes with its own difficulties, one being the associated costs, particularly for student athletes and those from less wealthy backgrounds. Any remaining proceeds from this calender will go toward supporting aspiring athletes in our club.” The squad is comprised of 15 rowers covering ages from late-teens to midthirties. A varied spread of experience levels are encompassed by the squad, and each member is an enthusiastic member of the Wellington Rowing Club. “The Mental Health Foundation is an amazing charity that works towards creating a society free from discrimination, where all people enjoy positive mental health and well-being,” says Jamie. “They work to influence individuals, whanau, organisations and communities to improve and sustain their mental health and reach their full potential.” l

NATURIST FARM

35 shades of Autumn There’s a special naked place in beautiful Golden Bay that has been cherished since the mid 1980s. WORDS & PHOTOGRAPHY Michael P Moore

P

eter Findlayson had a dream in the mid-1980’s to create a unique space to embrace and explore naturism, away from the pressures and orthodoxy of busy urban life and all the pressures it demands. Today, 35 years later, along with his partner Pete Banham, his dream is still unfolding. “Autumn Farm has been a combined creation, over many, many years, and with a lot of people - our guests, our woofers and our family,” Peter says. “My brother Chris, a well-known artist, created an amazing mural in our communal bathhouse, that depicts the ancient forest that once graced this region. The bathhouse is a unique central space for relaxing and talking as well as washing.” “I also wanted a place for us two raise our children, with my male partner,” Peter says. Since his early childhood, Peter has always embraced a life without clothes. “When my father took me, along with my brothers and sisters on holidays, we would have nude holidays - always swimming and playing naked outdoors. However my mother didn’t join us.” Peter grew up in Southland, where he gained a respect and love for the outdoors. At 17, he moved to Auckland, and with his own car, was able to discover beaches where other nudists gathered like Long Bay, Lady’s Bay and

St Leonards in the early 1970s. “I’ve been going to naked events since my teens - it was the hippie era - the time of gay liberation, alternative music festivals and I often stayed on communes. Casual nudity was perfectly acceptable,” Peter said. “I’ve since enjoyed events around the world and the friendship and freedom they allow is wonderful. I think I first visited Te Marua in Wellington in the late 1970’s.” Autumn Farm is a lush 3-acre treeclad property, on the outskirts of rural Takaka, Golden Bay, enveloped by a bush stream, that hosts many mature fruiting trees and manicured grounds, paths and artwork, with vegetable garden and composting toilets, all created with Peter’s landscape gardening and horticultural background. Autumn Farm now boasts a campground, farmhouse lodge, rustic cabins and dormitory. It is a unique naturist homestay and located in a unique natural environment of remote warm beaches and pristine national parks. Peter’s vision expels strong values of sustainable, low-impact, co-operative and community living. In 1989, he became a supporter member of the NZNF after being declined membership at Nelson Sun Club as a “single male”. In the early 1990s, Peter established a Summer Camp, the first of what was to become an iconic annual retreat for men from New Zealand and around the world, to gather and share a sense of community. “We started the summer camp and then later on, an annual naked week,” Peter says. Following a story in gonatural magazine by Kay Hannam in 2008, there were a number of letters criticising its inclusion. “The article about homosexual men really saddened me. There are magazines that cater to this. Homosexuality is not natural,” wrote Raymond Edwards.

However many readers praised the editor Kay for including the feature. “We need to be more open to our allies and promoting of a diverse range of clothesfree activities, than hide behind our club walls and wait and die of irrelevancy and old age,” wrote Brent Thompson, who was NZNF president in 1994/96. Peter believes things have changed a great deal since those times and people shouldn’t care about someone’s sexuality. “Anyone is welcome at our place, however we have a couple of weeks a year, dedicated as a men’s space. It doesn’t really matter about our sexual orientation, we just want to make a nice space for anyone attracted to the place we have created,” Peter says. Nowadays, with his partner Pete Banham, Autumn Farm operates yearround as an organic farm with woofers and helpers from around the world. For the last couple of years, they have hosted and supported the World Naked Bike Ride held in Takaka, holding the presentations, BBQ and offering accommodation. Peter and Pete are now looking to the next 20 years. “Next year I’ll be a pensioner!” Peter declares. “I think everything has to evolve. We’d like to make this into a naturist retirement resort and would love to see more people live here, contribute and help create a unique residential community and embrace our life. We’d want to attract people who are appreciative of what we’re doing.” 2018 marked the 25th year since the first summer camp at Autumn Farm, acknowledged by the presentation of a silver platter at the conclusion of Naked Week in late January. It was a fitting accolade to recognise Peter Findlayson’s contribution to naturism in New Zealand for well over 30 years. l

CELEBRATION

Ralph celebrates 90 He’s Pineglades royalty - life member Ralph Riccalton marks a milestone. WORDS & PHOTOGRAPHY David Saunders

O

n 5th November we celebrated our life member Ralph Riccalton who turned 90 years of age. A large turnout of members were present to hear from Julie and Veronica about his life and times. Ralph had the honour of officially cutting the ribbon and making the first serve, which was an Ace,to reopen the number one Miniten court, which had just been resurfaced. Ralph joined Pineglades at a time in the early 1960s when single men were closely scrutinised and needed a reference from an employer to gain provisional membership. In 1962 the Canterbury Sun and Health Club was out in the sleepy little village of Rolleston where farm land surrounded the club. Indeed from just past the Rolly Inn on Brookside Road was unsealed and must have proved a hazard to Ralph who would make his way to the club on his step-through moped. Over his years at the club, Ralph has owned one of the original cabins brought down from the old Cashmere sanatorium. As a keen miniten player, Ralph often teamed up with his good friend Stanton who now assumes the role of his driver after he surrendered his licence following a nasty home invasion that left him with a head injury and the effects of a stroke. Despite having every reason to be angry about the actions of the teenage thugs, Ralph has accepted his situation with grace and a generosity of spirit that many would have trouble adopting. Ralph has been an active supporter of the arts and has always made it his business to attend the first performance of any production at the Court Theatre, where he would hear from the director to answer questions and talk about the challenges of the play. Other interests over the years has been Scottish dancing, On the occasion of his 80th birthday in 2007, his first dance teacher came along to Pineglades as a mystery guest at This is Your Life.

The dance teacher was himself in his 80s and with a lovely broad Scottish accent and asked Ralph if he recalled him saying “De Ya have two left feet?” Ralph immediately recognised the accent and was pleased to renew the friendship. There is no doubting Ralph has an excellent general knowledge born from a love of reading. His career at the Canterbury Museum clearly excited his interest in things historic and valuable. Veronica once engaged him in conversation about some of the exhibits which she thought he had been the curator for, only to be told solemnly that “he had never stuffed a bird in his life”. Ralph always entered into the spirit of social events - even dressed as a bishop and having imbibed the holy water. In recent years, he has always been the contributor of the bowl of fruit salad at pot luck meals. Such was his prodigious efforts, someone remarked that he must have a 44-gallon drum of the stuff behind his cabin. This remark did not go unnoticed and on the very next occasion, Ralph rode into the clubhouse area on a chariot with a 44 gallon drum with the bowl of fruit salad inside. With a flourishing of the soup ladle, the good man delivered up the dessert much to the amusement. Pineglades is fortunate to have the opportunity to treasure the contributions that Ralph has made over many years. We look forward to his presence at the bus shelter where the retired miniten players gather for a chat and some social games on Thursdays. As has often been said by those who know Ralph well, he never has an unkind thing to say and remains positive in his outlook and demeanour notwithstanding the set backs he has had in recent times. Pineglades looks forward to celebrating the Ralph’s centenary in 2027. l

Miss Bareall writes... Helping you with life’s ruddy nuddy problems

Ask life quandaries to MissBareall@gmail.com Dear Miss Bareall, I do hope your advice extends across the Tasman as I read the Go Natural magazine online and I have a very serious problem. My 26 year old daughter is in a secure job but I have seen (as I am a FaceBook “friend” of hers) that she has started posting derogatory comments about her boss. As far as I’m aware, this digital stuff hangs around and doesn’t go away. She won’t talk to me about it and I overheard her tell her friend that he deserves it and she doesn’t seem to acknowledge that this could get her in some difficulty with her employer. Please help! - TW, Hamilton East Dear TW, Hey, I’m so pleased you’ve emailed me all the way from Oz! You’re correct, digital postings stay around. She is running the risk of seriously risking her current position and she should also be aware that future employers can now see how she has reacted to a work environment and she will appear to be immature. You say she won’t discuss it with you...well, she’d better listen to someone about this or she’s heading for a cliff. You’re quite right to be very concerned. Find someone who she will listen to. And fast. Aren’t children stupid sometimes! Hello Miss Bareall, my problem is that I am really unhappy. I don’t know why but I seem to always fall to the negative position rather than the positive. I was recently dumped by my boyfriend and I can’t seem to shake out of it. What do you suggest? - JJ Wellington Dear JJ, Oh a broken heart is so painful... and life can look a little grim. I am speaking from experience when I say that it does get better. I know that sounds like a cliché, sweet-pea, but its a universal truth. You start today. Firstly, as far as the ex is concerned, I can only advise you to keep facing the truth about the situation and not pretend or hide. Some people bottle their grief or disbelief up and this will come back to haunt you. Face the horrible cold hard truth and you will get through it. As Sir Winston Churchill said “If you find yourself in hell.... keep going”. I speak from experience about broken hearts. I was not always with my dear Gerald (bless him) and was terribly betrayed some time back. This too will pass.... it always does. Start today by going for a wee walk and noting something that is good... like the sky or a tree or flower... and observe its beauty... then tomorrow, a slightly longer stroll and specifically note two extra things that are cool. This develops into you experiencing gratitude... and gratitude mends the heart. And in closing (before I have a well deserved Earl Grey tea), I will say something that might be a little hard to swallow... and that is, if this wonderful boyfriend could hurt you so, then one day I know you will consider that by doing so, he gave you the greatest gift of all.... an enriched life. I know you can’t see that now... but you will feel really good and really happy soon. I promise. - Well Lovelies, it’s time for me to have a wee dram and give my pussy some attention. She loves to be stroked and cuddled...Remember you can always email me for some discrete and confidential advice at missbareall@gmail.com

The membership at Pineglades is growing with several new provisional members in recent months. The first thing visitors will notice is the transformation on each side of our two main roads, Gloria Ave and Lethaby Drive, with pine trees removed and are being processed in Trevor’s Park as firewood. This hopefully will High tea in the arboretum: recoup some of the Past president Terry Burkett costs spent over winter removing the pines which were seriously shading the cabins. In their place, a new native garden has been planted and in a couple of years we will have a boundary as attractive as our main drive. On the other side, we have also removed the topped pine trees and again with the dedication of a couple of members, a native garden is underway. The three miniten courts are now resurfaced and greatly add to the whole look of our sports area. New sculptures have been installed and the

gardens are continuing to be developed. Our pool was in serious need of repair and over what was a hottest part of December, the pool was sand-blasted, cracks filled and two coats of paint applied. 18 members of the club went to the rally in Wellington and competed very successfully, achieving medals in chess, darts, draughts, miniten,pétanque, tenniquoits - 17 medals in all. Socially the club is active with events such as horse racing, high tea. We also congratulate Joyce and Pearce who are engaged to be married later this year. Pineglades welcomes visitors and has great accommodation available, close to the Rolleston township.

In January, there was nude go-kart racing - just good shoes and crash helmets were needed, but nothing in between. Even the spectators got into the spirit of things by stripping off. Suddenly the doors closed and we were down to business. First race was the kids who showed the adults how to do it. And then it was the turn of the grown-ups. One minute into the race the red light came on as the barrier was repaired. Who hit the fence? It was clear by the time the second race took place that the race-drivers had gained confidence and a certain amount of aggression had entered the scene with much jostling taking place. You couldn’t wipe the grins off some of the faces. But all good things come to an end. The participants and spectators alike agreed that it was a very enjoyable experience, and a great day out. •pineglades.gonatural.co.nz

THE FIRST STEPS... A proposal by Gerald Wakely of the Auckland Outdoor Health Club, to form a national naturist organisation in New Zealand, published in The National Review, September 1957. At the last rally I was asked to put forward a scheme for a National Organisation. Here it is. This part consists of the reasons for having it, some of the advantages in it and the obligations which I consider we all should accept, and a suggested framework for it. Enclosed loose with this number of the Review you will find a sheet with a summary of the proposals and a questionnaire for you to fill in. Please give this some thought and let me have your comments, favourable or otherwise and preferably constructive, so that something definite can be hammered out at the next Rally.

YE OLD PHOTO - Many got their unique snap at the Te Marua Rally photo booth

WELLINGTON

Wellington members can finally breathe a well-deserved sigh of relief. A lot of work has occurred around the grounds in the lead up to hosting the International Congress in November 2016 and then the Pioneer Village Rally in December 2017-January 2018, as we were treated with amazing weather. Visitors would have noted the many improvements to our grounds, such as the underground power project, new deck, chip-sealed drive-ways and the shower blocks. Approximately 140 people (with roughly 15 kids) attended the NZNF’s 66th annual rally and by all accounts, it was deemed a roaring success. Rally goers were relaxed, ate well and played and partied hard. The event also generated some positive media exposure. A shout out to everyone involved with our 19th Century Nudist Colony! As ever, we are hosting our regular Saturday night BBQ’s and Sunday afternoon teas over the summer months. Along with a monthly Open Day to attract new members, we are also planning to host some youth events and the Hash House Harriers. If you are passing through Wellington, take the time to stop in at Te Marua to say hi, have a drink, a swim or stay overnight in one of our cabins. We look forward to seeing you. l

WHY HAVE AN ORGANISATION ANYWAY? You have only to look around you to see how necessary a national body is in every sphere or life. Whatever we think as individuals (and nudists seem to tend to anarchy!) surely we must admit that, to be listened to we must get some sort of an organisation that is an elected body that represents us all. If you doubt this take our talks earlier this year with Government Departments. Percy, Stewart and I (or someone else) should have been able to go saying that we represented all the naturists of New Zealand and that we were authorised to negotiate in their name. As it was, the best we could do was to say that Percy was the National Organizer (but that did not mean he could speak for everybody) and that Stewart and I represented our own clubs - not even all the naturists in our area. Although we were well received and it was obvious that there was no objection to our movement, we had a good hearing and are well satisfied with the results or our talks we were agreed afterwards that our case would have been much more effective if we could have spoken as the elected representatives or a national body comprising the naturists or New Zealand and including both clubs and individuals. As it is, our agreement favours clubs at the expense or the individual because we could only show that we had control of a sort as far as the clubs were concerned but we were unable to show any sort of a national organisation that would imply responsibility in individual members. Starting a national organisation now isn’t putting the cart before the horse. To continue the metaphor, right now we’ve got a horse but we’re all trying to ride him and he can only take a limited number. It’s time we got a cart to take the extra load, to have spare room for more and to impress the neighbours. Again, to get ahead at all as a movement we must have people from the main centres at least getting together about three times a year to plan publicity and to co-ordinate activities for the promotion or naturism in New Zealand. I’m sure we’re all agreed that we don’t want to push naturism down anyone’s throat but, on the other hand, to assure ourselves of our rightful place in the sun both physically and metaphorically we must see that our point or view gets over to everyone else in the community - and that’s not done to best effect by leaving it to one or two people. Such get-togethers cost money and you can’t expect individuals to pay for it. Do you need any more reasons? If you do, you shouldn’t. OBLIGATIONS AND ADVANTAGES. Although it’s very nice to lie the sun and let the other joker worry about everything each individual who subscribes to the idea or naturism must accept that its advantages imply obligations as well. The establishment of a national organisation is just putting this truism into practical terms. THE FRAMEWORK. All right, you might say, we’ll grant you what you’ve waffled about so far but how are you going to make the thing work? Well, here’s a framework, if nothing else. At least it will give those who go to the rally and those who read this something to think about and I hope that all will let me know what they think about it. I’m sorry that I will not be at the Rally to push my point but there will be some people from A.O.H.C. to fight my battle for me!

Expressions of interest

A lifestyle business opportunity in the heart of the Marlborough wine country... On offer is one of only two commercial naturist parks in New Zealand. Wai-natur comes complete with beautiful park like grounds and a twelve year reputation with clientele from around the world - a wonderful place to experience naturism for the first time. The 2.5 Ha landscaped grounds feature a modern guest house with bed and breakfast rooms, separate cabins and a kitchen/lounge area with a wood fireplace. Other amenities include a solar heated salt water pool, spa and sauna, laundry facilities, two ablution blocks and a double bay workshop. This offer is an ideal opportunity to build on a unique hospitality business model. Wai-natur experienced a great summer, with record guest nights during the last quarter mean you will have to book early to ensure your favourite site is available, especially now that SH1 is open. Kay and Brian wish to acknowledge the valuable contribution our many volunteers have given during the past twelve summers, ensuring the growing number of visitors enjoy their experience at Wai-natur. Expressions of interest to purchase the property and business in the first instance are invited from our network of naturist friends. INFO: Kay or Brian telephone 03 5722 681 or 021 326 199 or email info@naturist.nz
