Sometimes my entire life feels like a dream, and I find it is usually those times when I get to just focus on being creative- whether it is through jewelry design, writing, enjoying new experienc-

Crista Grasso - Editor-in-Chief Crista launched her first jewelry business, AmberTortoise Jewelry, in 2005 while working full time as a senior leader for various fortune 500 companies. Her unique blend of creativity and innovation combined with organizational and business management skills helped her to transform what started as a hobby into a successful international handmade jewelry business. In 2013 she took the company through another transformation and rebranded as Nearly Naked, which had been AmberTortoise’s most popular jewelry collection. She wanted something more than just a jewelry company so she expanded Nearly Naked to be a lifestyle brand for women dedicated to helping them look and feel sexy, beautiful, and irresistible. Crista believes that life is too short to be boring

8 ♦ GoNearlyNaked.com

Crista believes that a great piece of jewelry is so much more than just an accessory. She believes that jewelry has a deeper meaning and is transformative. It can take any outfit from boring to fabulous, it can make you exude confidence and sass, it can start the conversation that could change your life… “Jewelry is a means of self-expression. It is a reflection of the person you are today and a window into the person you will become tomorrow. There are so many things can limit the way you express yourself through fashion- whether it be a certain dress code at work, the proper attire for an event, or what you can wear based on your size or body shape. Jewelry is one of the few things that can always be an expression of YOU and reflect who you really are. It can make you feel strong, sexy, and confident. If your jewelry doesn’t do this for you, you are wearing the wrong jewelry.”

OCTOBER’S

Inspirational Woman of the Month An Interview with Burgandy Viscosi Burgandy Viscosi is a painter, visionary, and soul-centered creative woman. We interviewed Burgandy to learn more about her amazing and inspirational journey. On a personal note, Burgandy was a huge inspiration to me. After losing touch for almost a decade, we reconnected in 2004 and I spent almost a week visiting her in Seattle. I came home determined to pursue my own art in an entirely new way

18 ♦ GoNearlyNaked.com

and finally become the artist I always dreamed of being. Seeing someone living such a beautiful life, doing something she was so passionate about and so amazingly talented at made me want to do the same. This is what an inspirational woman does- she leads by example, and inspires others to make their own way in this world doing the work that they love. Burgandy is truly an inspirational woman. ♦ Interview by Crista Grasso

Let’s start with your story. Who are you, as a person, as an artist, as the beautiful and intriguing Burgandy Viscosi?

In 1999 I was in a car accident that changed my life. I had a 6 month recovery time, and it was then that I learned to paint. First I used it as tool to help me not fall into depression. Painting beautiful pictures helped remove my focus of my broken body. At 19, with a broken face and walking with a walker was a very difficult reality to face, especially in a society that is

heavily focused on woman’s beauty. So the first painting I painted during my recovery was a beautiful face. Even if at that moment I couldn’t be beautiful, I create it... And low and behold that saved me. I healed day by day… Today being an artist is suc a huge part of me, but it is the process of the craft that teaches me how to create and express daily within this world. That is the real art I strive to master during my experience in this life, in this body called Burgandy.

Inspirational Woman of the Month ♦ 19

We all can think back on defining moments that brought about transformational change in our lives. What were your defining moments?

I honestly feel that there are moments that recreate me very often. Most of these moments are the ones that are the most uncomfortable, or feel as though you are breaking. Be the most thankful for those, for if you handle them with ease and grace they will be the exact experiences that

20 ♌ GoNearlyNaked.com

give you the opportunity to recreate yourself into the human being you would like to be. Only when you are pulled apart can you restructure yourself. Live in gratitude for those and all moments coming to you. You have summoned them for one reason or another. What is it that you love so much about painting?

I’ve chosen painting as my medium, not because it was easy but

rather because it’s truly a challenge for me. I remain interested in it because mastering all of its possibilities is endless. So changing styles or trying new techniques renews my excitement every time. It truly is about the process. Deep inside, finding the flow... That is the gold. Do you see yourself as an artist, creative entrepreneur, or both?

I do see myself as an artist, which includes many different titles. I do often interpret people’s visions into something I can actually form with paint onto the canvas. But most importantly I love to sit down with people and ask them what their highest goals and dreams are, and create an image like a mandala they can use daily. This image will serve as a reminder for their direction, working both on our conscious and unconscious mind. The goal is to have people graduate their paintings.

how you work, and how people find you and commission paintings?

The process of my work’s direction is very organic. I do set intentions about who I would like to become as an artist and person. Then an intuition comes, some-times delivered through my thoughts or directed to me through a person. Listen closely. They are always being gifted to you if you choose to accept your good. Seems so easy, but truly acceptance is the only challenge. Once you know you deserve all life has to offer you, it is there ready for you.

You get asked to do some pretty amazing things in some beautiful places. Tell us about

Inspirational Woman of the Month ♦ 21

The road to success is never a straight line even though it can sometimes appear that way to people on the outside looking in. What do you find the most challenging and how do you overcome it?

Humans at the core of their being, truly want to earn their rewards. It feels lovely to accomplish that which you choose to.

So obstacles and challenges are only perceived for our benefit. If we can break down the obstacle into the very stepping stones needed to achieve those desires, the outcome is that much sweeter. Fear is a great example of this, if you learn to invert your fear into momentum to actually transform yourself, these uncomfortable feelings become a great ally...

One of things I love about what you do is that you make time to have fun, spend time with friends, and truly enjoy every experience. How do you balance this so you still have time to paint? I think one of my biggest daily goals is to incorporate my social and personal life into my creative life. I do understand this may be the exact business model some try to avoid, but for me I feel that my best clients are my best of friends. My daily interactions are about creating in all forms. Your ‘work’ in this world then becomes what you are. Not trying to sell anything, but rather knowing that being the best of yourself in every situation is actually our only true job in this experience we call life. If you do this, all the rest will take care of itself on your behalf. Matter is waiting for you to direct it in the highest form of order you can comprehend. One step at a time. ♦

Inspirational Woman of the Month ♌ 23

Where do you see yourself in the future?

As for the rest of my year, it’s a full one. I am in London currently, slowly working my way to Burgundy, France. I am in the moment in my life when I am contemplating marriage and children, and if that will be part of my path. So I am taking a moment to visit Burgundy, and symbolically

24 ♦ GoNearlyNaked.com

be still with my soul. And ask the bigger questions. I plan on doing a residential mural in London, and one in Paris along my path. I fly back to the states in November and marry a couple in Kaui, then work on illustrating a children’s book in Hawaii. Hopefully to be in Texas by December to see my family for the holidays.

A loose sketch of how I would like the future to look... I would love to be more of a public speaker and do a few very large and very involved art pieces each year. The art pieces being elaborate and complex masterpieces that stimulate all parts of my being. I see myself traveling the planet, with the divine willing, with my family. As abundant as is needed to cover all of my needs and desires as well as those of my family, and to abundantly take care of all of the needs of the elders in my family.

If someone is considering pursuing their passion, whether it be art or something else, what advice would you give them to take it from “just a dream” to how they live their life?

Every day for at least ten minutes, if you meditate, before or after meditation imagine yourself exactly as you would like to see yourself…

You inspire us. Who inspires you?

Simple but true answer is life inspires me... All of it. Nature, other art, humans. If you would like some exact names I could go on forever… Ilene Meyer was the first artist that blew me away. I lived in LA for a short moment of my life and she use to show in a gallery on Rodeo Dr. I had never seen a modern piece of art with that complexity. I was instantly in love with that particular style of painting.

How do embrace the spirit of

The Modern Rebel? The funny thing about this answer is the sweet paradox. I’ve reached that point in life where all the things I tried to rebel against now are becoming my direction. It’s all about refining yourself constantly and most importantly not being afraid to be a rebel to your habitual thought patterns. Once you realize it’s a real pattern... Break it. Rebel!! It’s so important to reinvent how you view the world. Nothing stays the same, neither should you. This way you can truly grow to your full potential. ♦

26 ♦ GoNearlyNaked.com

We asked Burgandy to tell us... My favorite thing to paint is:

Painting with multidimensional meanings. Unifying ideas. My favorite thing to do when I am not painting is: Finding

new ways to connect with the divine in every moment. It’s truly a challenge but always worth the invested time. 5 words that describe my character and who I am/ what I stand for: Creative,

Compassionate, Motivated, Conscious, Loving. I know I only listed the good traits, but I believe you should always focus on what you want more of. :) To me, sexy is: When you are

acting and speaking from your soul, and your physical being is

submissive to your higher self. You can see this in a person in their demeanor, words and actions. That type of grace and beauty is truly what stops the show. The confidence of knowing you have the power of all the heavens on your side because you have appeased them with your good nature. That is beauty. My words to live by are: Be

grateful for everything. Even if it appears to be something you dislike, appreciate its coming knowing it is part of a much bigger process that is conspiring on your behalf. Believe this, and watch how your world changes for the best. People can learn more about me here: Tumblr | Facebook

Inspirational Challenge of the Month What are your habitual thought patterns that are holding you back from your full potential?

Do you think you can’t do something, wear something, or be something because of some thought pattern that needs to be broken? Are you holding yourself back from pursuing your passion because you are afraid to step outside the box or put yourself first for a change? This month, challenge yourself

to embrace your inner modern rebel and go for it. Ignore anyone, especially yourself, that tells you that you can’t do it. Give yourself permission to step outside your comfort zone, take a risk, and just go for it! The worst that can happen is probably not all that bad. It’s time to refine and grow. Break the rules and follow your passions.

A Lifestyle Makeover

Starts With Your Closet

What are the benefits of cleaning out your closet? In Feng Shui your closet represents your subconscious mind. Sound scary? I know, and the most significant closet of all is your wardrobe closet. You know, the one that you visit everyday with great joy or great fear? By Feng Shui Expert Christine Bove — CHRISTINEBOVE.COM

You can learn a lot about a person by just looking in their closet. Whether it is cluttered or organized, your closet needs to be reviewed seasonally and especially around life changes. In Feng Shui, the energy of your space is either supporting or draining you. So, as you set out to make changes in your life from career, health, wealth and love, you

always want to check in with your closet. Are the clothes in the closet supporting your new goals? Is there space for that new you? Do you have outfits for every occasion: Fun, sexy, work clothes, work out clothes and big events? Often I hear women complain about their lives, “nothing is changing,” “I’m single and can’t find a man,” “I can’t get promoted,” “I struggle to lose weight.”

“Your closet represents your

“When you create your new look it needs to honor your goals, whatever they may be - weight loss, a relationship, career, or more wealth.”

this, I’ve never once heard that keeping skinny clothes in the closet caused anyone to lose weight! You are doing more damage, by keeping your skinny clothes and reminding yourself daily that you still haven’t reached your goal. You are actually punishing yourself! Everyday when you open your closet and see those clothes negative thoughts begin to roll in your mind. You start off on the wrong foot and guess what, you probably don’t work out, you might eat an unhealthy breakfast or skip breakfast altogether just to fill your emotional pain. Now does that sound like it’s worth keeping your skinny clothes? Think about this way, if your goal is to lose weight, feel sexy and confident, don’t you want to celebrate that new you? With new clothes to

chasing patterns you can see what needs to be corrected. Remember in life we all make mistakes and the key is to learn from them. Once you’ve cleaned things out, you begin to see what you have and now know what to buy and what to avoid. Now the key is to shop right!

So, now it’s time to review your closet! ♦ Spend 15 minutes every day for 9 days (9 is an auspicious number in Feng Shui) reviewing all the items in your closet. Or simply set aside an hour or so on your free day to get it done. ♦ As you review each item, ask yourself...Have I worn it in a year? Does this support my energy? Does it flatter my figure? If you can’t say yes to all three questions, it’s time to let it go. ♦ Make a mental note of all the reasons why you are discarding these items. The key is to see the pattern of the mistakes you made with your wardrobe. For example, do you buy just because it’s on sale or it’s the latest trend? By recognizing your pur-

Personal Care Products: Often the Weak Link in Your Healthy Lifestyle by Erik Kreider — Kabana Skincare

“Just as you wouldn’t want to ingest chemicals that aren’t nutritious, the same applies for your skin as it is an extremely permeable and sensitive organ.”

Although many of us view skin as an external part of our bodies, the truth is skin is your largest organ and much of what you put on it actually is absorbed through it and can bioaccumulate, contaminating your organs, tissue and nervous systems.

This problem arises from the fact that nearly all mass marketed personal and skin care products utilize petrochemical ingredients that have no biochemical similarity to the naturally occurring biochemical building blocks that your body uses every day to maintain your health and wellbeing. In fact, chemicals that are not naturally present in your body affects your normal physiology and Personal Care Products ♦ 59

chemistry in harmful ways; even if that harm is relatively subtle, it certainly adds up over the decades you choose to use your ‘favorite’ personal care products. Just as you wouldn’t want to ingest chemicals that aren’t nutritious, the same applies for your skin as it is an extremely permeable and sensitive organ. It’s generally unknown that absorption of synthetic chemicals through your skin is actually more dangerous than eating them, because basic human anatomy has a very effective first line of defense for toxic chemicals in your diet – it’s the liver! Everything that’s

60 ♦ GoNearlyNaked.com

absorbed in the gut automatically is transported by the portal vein to the liver, which is effectively the toxic waste processing plant of your body, where it either gets metabolized into something less toxic, or directly excreted back into the large intestine for elimination. Your skin has no such defense, and everything that is absorbed through it automatically gets absorbed into your blood to be circulated throughout your entire body! Exposure through your skin is one of the worst ways to absorb unnaturally occurring chemicals based on this basic human anatomy, yet mass marketed personal care products regularly cause massive con-

Transdermal chemical exposure increases oxidative damage and degrades the processes that maintain your body’s state of beauty and health, leading to metabolic dysfunction, disease, cancer and ultimately earlier than natural death. Personal care products contain myriad chemistries – just look at the ingredient lists! And there are just as many chemistries that should be avoided, but if there’s one class you should choose to eliminate, the highest dosage chemicals are the petrochemical active ingredients present in sunscreens. Yes, sunscreens! Sunscreen petrochemicals are public enemy number one in terms of exposure and bioaccumulation, because just one application of a mass marketed brand can result in many grams of internal exposure and effectively and easily ruin an

entire year of organic dieting. Sunscreen petrochemicals are universally based on benzene, have a very similar chemical structure to the infamous paraben preservatives (in fact, many petrochemical sunscreens are indeed para-substituted benzene rings – which is where the term para-ben was derived), mimic estrogen in our bodies, fail to biodegrade, have ecological feminization properties and have been demonstrated in well controlled studies conducted by the United States’ Center for Disease Control (CDC) and National Institutes of Health (NIH), to bioaccumulate to very significant levels in our bodies. They are regulated as drugs by FDA precisely because they have significant exposure and toxicological issues. To illustrate the degree of significance, a single application of an SPF 50 formula may result in

Personal Care Products ♦ 61

“Sunscreen is a critical component of healthy lifestyles as UV damage will eventually cause skin cancer.” 10 grams or more of exposure with just a single application. Multiple applications as specified in the directions increase exposure drastically. (Compare 10 grams of exposure to a dose of Tylenol; if you have a really bad headache – you might take 1000mg of it, which is just ONE gram.) There are simply no other drugs on the market anywhere that result in higher exposure levels than petrochemical sunscreens. Period. Children are particularly susceptible to sunscreen chemical exposure for two reasons; first, their bodies are fundamentally more sensitive to hormonal disruption because they are still developing; and second, the very petrochemical active ingredients present in many baby and child-marketed sunscreens have NEVER been tested on kids! This is scary, indeed. If the Directions say “Under 6 months of age – ask

62 ♦ GoNearlyNaked.com

a doctor” you know it’s in this untested class. But in reality, your doctor won’t have a clue about whether or not it’s advisable to use the product on your kids, unless he or she knows enough biochemistry to say, “use a zinc oxide sunscreen” on your children. Sunscreen is a critical component of healthy lifestyles however, as UV damage will eventually cause skin cancer. So what are your options? There are safe choices of sunscreen: zinc oxide is the most effective, broad spectrum UV absorber available, and in non-nano forms, cannot be absorbed through the skin. Zinc oxide does not have bioaccumulation or toxicological problems. It is also the ONLY sunscreen active ingredient that’s been approved by FDA for use on children and babies. These are not opinions, they are facts.

Kabana Skincare

How can you avoid the primary sources of whole body contamination and optimally maintain your health? 1. Be a label reader and know something about ingredients – simple ingredients that don’t require an advanced chemistry degree to understand are those you should seek. Be skeptical of all other formulas.

2. Practice common sense biochemistry – don’t put anything on or in your body, or any member of your family’s body, that isn’t something it naturally uses, because doing so will negatively affect the natural processes that maintain your youth, beauty and health. If you wouldn’t eat it, it definitely doesn’t belong on your skin.

3. Take a look at KABANA SKINCARE for a line of highly effective personal care products that contain simple organic ingredients, understandable by everyone, and are safe to use every day on your entire family. ♦ Personal Care Products ♦ 63

An Interview with

Soaps to Live By

Andreea Ayers | Founder of Soaps to Live By

What was your inspiration behind the Soaps to Live By line?

I have always wanted to have a soap company - actually, it was one of the first business ideas that I had. However, I knew that in order to have a successful soap company and

64 ♦ GoNearlyNaked.com

to differentiate myself I would need some really great packaging and also to do something different and to be honest, I couldn’t think of anything to do to differentiate my soaps. And since I’m not a designer, I decided to put away the idea of soaps and start something else. However, after selling my t-shirt business and coaching other entrepreneurs, I really missed having a product. So the idea of the soaps came up again and I was in the shower one day thinking about ways to make the shower experience positive - I thought about a product that you can use in the shower to remind yourself to think positively of the day ahead and that’s when the idea of the soaps stamped with inspirational messages came about!

You have had other successful businesses in the past, including your current coaching

company for product based businesses. What drove you to launch a new business?

I really missed having a product line and I feel that I have learned so much about growing a product AFTER I sold my product business

and I began teaching. I love having something tangible and, while I love coaching, I also really LOVE great products and great packaging! So launching the soap line was a great way to go back to having a product line that I am excited about.

Naked Skin: Interview with Soaps to Live By ♌ 65

At Nearly Naked, we are all about stripping off anything unnecessary and living the healthiest and happiest life possible. We love that your soaps are made from all organic and natural ingredients and are good for your body, as well as for the environment. Tell us more about your product and how it is made and sourced.

66 ♌ GoNearlyNaked.com

The soaps are hand poured, hand mixed and hand cut using organic ingredients whenever possible, essential oils and herbs. We don’t use any chemicals, preservatives, parabens, phthalates or any of the other nasty stuff that’s in conventional soaps these day. I am super passionate about organic products and having a sustainable product is definitely an extension of how I live my life every day.

This month’s theme is all about The Modern Rebel, someone does what she is passionate about, who thinks outside the box and isn’t afraid to do things differently. Being innovative isn’t always easy. What challenges have you faced and how does Soaps to Live by embrace the Modern Rebel spirit?

“I thought about a product that you can use in the shower to remind yourself to think positively of the day ahead and that’s when the idea of the soaps stamped with inspirational messages came about!”

I have faced a few challenges with the soaps - first, how to bring the manufacturing costs down so I don’t have to charge $20 per bar! Also, I knew that so much of this company’s success lies in packaging, so I searched for months before I found a designer whose work I absolutely loved. In terms of the Modern Rebel spirit, I launched the company without really feeling “ready” and I just decided to take the plunge. There has been no looking back ever since! Tell us about your choice to use “biostone” for your packaging.

As I mentioned above, I am super passionate about eco-friendly products and I wanted to incorporate as many green aspects to my

brand as possible. So I went beyond using recycled paper for my packaging and came across this biostone material which is tree-free. It’s also less expensive than a paper box, so it made sense from every angle. Which soap is your personal favorite?

I love the SHINE Citrus Lavender - the scent is light and citrus-y and it smells amazing!

Naked Skin: Interview with Soaps to Live By ♦ 67

Which soap is your customers favorite to date?

I haven’t yet figured out if people buy the soaps for the message on it or for the scent - or both! But, to date, the most popular soap has been the LOVE, LAUGH and PEACE. What’s next for Soaps to Live by? I plan on launching other

products with similar messages, including journals and candles. I am also speaking with a few sales reps groups to take the products to stores across the USA, so look out for Soaps to Live By in your city!

68 ♦ GoNearlyNaked.com

Where can people find your soaps and learn more about you and Soaps to Live By?

At www.soapstoliveby .com. We also have a few stores, which you can find listed on the website, and we hope to be in many more stores before the end of the year! ♦

5 Fitness and Self-Care Steps To Looking Sexy…

Part 1 by Fitness Expert Anna Price Recently, I asked a client why it was important that she get in shape now, and she surprisingly said, “I know the right answer is because I want to feel strong and healthy, and live long enough to see my grandkids grow up…blah, blah, blah, don’t get me wrong, this is important to me, but what I *really* need right now is to look great naked. I just started dating again, and I really like this guy, but I’m dreading the moment he sees me naked for the first time.” Some women who are already in relationships, have said to me, “I’m so done jumping under the sheets before my man sees me 70 ♦ GoNearlyNaked.com

Accepting

yourself as you are

naked, the FIRST thing I do is turn the lights off, I really want more excitement and spontaneity in my sex life.” Honestly, I don’t know any woman who DOESN’T want to feel proud of her body, look sexy naked, and feel free in the bedroom. So I pulled together the best fitness and self-care advice and techniques I give my clients – and have used myself – on how to look and feel great naked. But first, let’s talk about why this might be a problem for you in the first place.

If you’re a woman who’s body conscious, you’ve probably already tried plenty of programs to slim down and tighten your ass in the past, right? Some of them probably worked, but maybe not for long. I believe you are well intentioned and truly want to look and feel better about your body. Maybe you don’t know exactly what to do in a way that works best for you. There are proven strategies and science based techniques specific to each woman’s individual needs, that you may not have discovered yet. So, you try the latest fitness trend for a while, you get results, and either become inconsistent because life gets in the way, or you hit a plateau, get frustrated and then eventually quit. Maybe you just haven’t found a plan you actually like? We’re all busy, and sometimes we get caught up at work or with family, we keep meaning to fit exercise and healthy eating in, but there just never seems to be enough hours in the day to do it all. If this is you, I feel your pain, because I’ve been there, and so have my clients.

Fitness Tips ♦ 71

So, I found a program busy women like us can do anywhere, using little to no equipment, that will get us the results we want quickly!

But first, in order for this to stick, and not be another program you do for a bit and give up on, you have to learn how to make your selfcare a priority, and practice it DAILY. I have also found that a vicious cycle of losing weight and gaining it back puts a strain on relationships. When 72 ♦ GoNearlyNaked.com

women stop taking care of themselves, they start to hide their bodies in the bedroom… which then leads to the classic line, “honey, I have a headache tonight.” Sometimes, we don’t even realize we avoid sex because we don’t feel sexy.

So let’s get into my 5 fitness and self-care steps, so you never have to hide under the sheets again!

Step 1. The Naked Truth Love what you see in the mirror first. Think about the body

parts you’re not proud of, the areas of your body that make you want to hide under baggy clothes. Maybe you heard negative comments about your body from your parents growing up, or from an ex. Well, that was then, and this is now, what’s important is that you practice loving your body ANYWAY! If you don’t love and accept yourself…you’ll NEVER feel good enough, regardless of how much praise you get or how good you look. When my clients are ashamed to be naked, I ask them to take their clothes off and look at themselves in the mirror. Be naked in front of yourself. Face yourself, and the very thing you are hiding from. Look – and even touch – every part of your body… sagging parts and

all. Look deep into your own eyes, long enough to feel uncomfortable, hang on through the discomfort and repeat a self-loving affirmation or mantra – that you come up with – and repeat it 10 times. “I am healthy, I am whole, I am complete, just as I am!” Say it out loud, with meaning and emotion. Then, write your mantra down in a journal 10 times. I want you to see, speak, feel and write this mantra for 10 days straight. You’ll notice how the perception of yourself and your behaviors start to shift, and how much easier it is to take better care of yourself. When you stop rejecting yourself, you’ll stop searching for the next best thing, out there, outside of you, to make you happy. Be open to trying something you’ve never done before… even if it seems weird.

Fitness Tips ♦ 73

Be original and do something you enjoy, maybe even something that

sparks your inner sexy, like dancing.

Step 2. YOUR VISION Create a vision of how you want to look. Accepting yourself

as you are now, doesn’t mean you don’t want to look better and keep improving. Envision yourself at your best. Maybe you like your curves and just want to tone and tighten your arms and thighs. Or maybe you want a lean and long dancers body, or a stronger more athletic body. Think of someone you aspire to be and look like, then imagine you already have that body. Look at a picture, or imagine this person everyday. Do the things you know you need to do to BE this person now.

74 ♦ GoNearlyNaked.com

Step 3. Your plan

Let’s discuss how to plan an exercise and eating plan that plays to your strengths and preferences so it’s a no brainer to stick to. If

you despise bike riding or working out to ear buzzing loud music, forget about spinning. Don’t do it because all your friends are doing it and it’s all the rave, because you won’t do it for long. Be original and do something you enjoy, maybe even something that sparks your inner sexy, like dancing. Maybe you like hiking, working out at home with a trainer or dvd. Whatever you choose, just make sure it’s a plan that burns fat and builds muscle. You want your metabolism elevated for hours or even days after each of your workouts, so your body is working FOR you

while you sleep… we like that. :) I can already hear some of you saying “Who has time to exercise, I barely have time to pee!” It may be easier for people who have more free time, but not for me.” Trust me, we ALL have 15-30 free minutes everyday or every other day. It just has to be important enough…WE have to be important enough. There are workouts available today that you can do in as little as 15-30min’s 3 days/week that burn fat like crazy and give you results in as little as a couple of weeks. So NO MORE excuses ok! You are WORTH THE TIME AND ENERGY. Now you have to schedule it into your weekly calendar just like you would an important business meeting, or play date for your kids, and follow through. ♦

Check out next month’s issue as we explore the 4th & 5th step to look sexy naked – The Naked Workout and The Naked Food Plan.

NAKED HEALTH

Do you love being

by Wendy Darling

If you were to take off your clothes, look at yourself in the mirror (nearly) naked… how would you FEEL? What thoughts would you have?

It hurts my heart how many people have become overly self-conscious about their bodies. First, there is WAY too much attention being placed on the way a body ‘should’ look in our society. The media is constantly bombarding us with 76 ♦ GoNearlyNaked.com

images of a singular body type (with the rare exception of companies like Dove’s campaign for ‘real’ women). In fact, it has been shown that the models of today are drastically underweight, while the Plus size models are actually an average weight. No wonder so many people feel inadequate! How many of us can realistically look like a model? Besides… we were not designed to all look alike.

“I believe poor body image is one of the most common and undiagnosed issues women and men face today.”

However, this emphasis has also resulted in women experiencing deep feelings of inadequacy. And unfortunately, I believe poor body image is one of the most common and undiagnosed issues women and men face today. And it deeply saddens me how this is robbing people not just of their health, but their happiness. I remember speaking with a client who felt ashamed of her body. Instead of joining her husband and children to swim in the ocean, she would watch from a distance. After a conversation with me, she realized that no one else had any attention

on her body. She was robbing herself of the joy of playing with her children, enjoying the ocean air, and simply having a great time. And something ‘clicked’ and she decided to take a chance and went swimming with her family. She discovered a new sense of freedom, and interestingly enough, she began releasing some of the weight she had been holding onto. I have had conversations with women who won’t date because of the way they ‘perceive’ they look (and many of these women are actually of normal weight and very attractive). It’s affecting how people feel about being intimate.

Do You Love Being Nearly Naked? ♦ 77

Food For Thought:

It’s robbing people of their self-confidence and self-worth! It continues to feed into the ‘something is wrong with me.’ And, yes… something is VERY wrong with what has happened and it’s time to do something about that. It’s time to realize that you have been BRAINWASHED to believing you need to LOOK a certain way to be attractive, to be ‘enough.’ It’s time to end the suffering. It’s time to celebrate that beautiful, special and wonderful body of yours! So what can you do? 78 ♦ GoNearlyNaked.com

Take some time to take a really close look at your body. You can either do this in front of a mirror, or if you prefer, simply ‘being’ with your body, alone in your room. Take note of some of your thoughts, feelings and reactions. Begin looking at each and every part of your body with loving eyes. Look at your body as if it were a newborn baby. If you were holding a newborn, how would you examine this precious child? Your body deserves to be treated like a newborn baby! It does so much, but depends on YOU for its love and

“It’s time to end the suffering. It’s time to celebrate that beautiful, special and wonderful body of yours!”

nourishment! It’s helpless, just like a newborn! You would never consider stuffing a newborn with chips, ice cream and cake. Why would you consider doing the same to your body? You would never consider trying to force a baby to eat. Yet, your body is trying to tell you it has had ‘enough’ and you may not be listening! Your body may be tired, yet you are not giving it time to rest! Isn’t it time to begin taking a kinder approach? Each day, take a look in the mirror and tell yourself AND your body “I LOVE YOU”. At first, it may seem a bit awkward. You may also feel great sadness if you have treated your body in a negative way. But in a short period of time, you are going to begin feeling the difference.

You have been blessed with a wonderful, unique, and very special body. How are you honoring it? How are you showing gratitude and appreciation for this gift? How are you celebrating your life and this magnificent body that contains ALL of you? You’ve been given one body and one life. Don’t you think it’s time to enjoy them both? Let’s start today. ♦

An Interview with the Bride, Helen Tuck Tell us about you and your husband. How did you meet and fall in love?

Adam and I have been friends for a long time. We met in 2006 and I was straight away interested in this tall and handsome stranger… Unfortunately he was dating a friend of mine at the time! I was quite jealous of her though, as there was a lot of stuff about Adam that I liked – music taste, sense of humor, love of gaming, facial hair… The list goes on!

When I reconnected with that group of friends a couple of years down the track, it was as though all the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle had just fallen into place, because Adam and I got together and just… clicked. After a very short time it was so evident to me that he was the person I wanted to grow old and wrinkly with. Everything felt so right with him and I had no doubt in my mind that he was ‘the one’. I even told my mother that the first time

86 ♦ GoNearlyNaked.com

I introduced him! We moved pretty fast and were living together after a couple of months and started a little family of pets - 2 cats and a python. When Adam ended up proposing, I don’t think it came as a surprise to most of our friends and family as I’m pretty sure they thought it was just a matter of time before we got married. I knew it was coming at some point, Adam and I had talked about our plans for our lives and we were

both on the same page for all of what I thought were the major decisions - whether we wanted to get married, future children etc. But knowing it was coming didn’t stop me being over the moon when he asked! How did you make your wedding unique, and reflect each of you?

We both wanted our wedding to reflect who we were. We knew that

we wanted our friends and family to be with us and we wanted everyone to have a great time, especially us! Good music and good food were pretty important to us. The venue ended up being a surprisingly quick choice for us. We found pictures of a place called Belgenny Farm and we just loved the look of it. It’s actually a working farm so if you walk into some areas you’d find sheep and chickens, but has beautiful grounds, a vineyard,

The Unique Bride ♦ 87

and this awesome vintage/rustic quality that we really wanted. The reception area is actually a converted granary! We’re both quite musical, I sing and Adam played the saxophone for many years, so having a live band that played classic rock songs was a no-brainer for us. We also have pretty alternative tastes in music, with both of us loving rock and heavy metal… For instance, our first dance was a cover of Metallica’s ‘Nothing Else Matters’ by a heavy metal cello quartet band from Finland called Apocalyptica.

88 ♦ GoNearlyNaked.com

We’re also pretty nerdy, love gaming and get far too excited about toys and things, so we wanted to have a few unique aspects of our wedding to reflect this… We decided that Adam and his groomsmen would have lego cufflinks and that our cake topper would be a cute lego couple. Of course, all of the lego brides that we found had white dresses which just looked wrong, so I decided to paint my dress onto one of them. Neither of us are religious, but the ceremony was still very important to us. We absolutely want-

ed the whole thing to be our words, so aside from writing our own vows, we also worked in a few little details that made the whole ceremony more ‘us’ – one was an Einstein quote and one was a short children’s story called A Lovely Love Story, by Edward Monkton – I still get teary every time I read it. Your wedding dress was gorgeous, and it wasn’t white. What made you choose a nontraditional wedding dress? What did you love most about it and what was everyone’s reaction?

It was such an easy choice for me to go with something other than white, it was just never an option I would have considered. I’m not religious and I practically never wear white, instead I’ve always been a fan of more alternative clothing choices with lots of blacks and reds. I’ll take any opportunity to dress up in my corset! Adam had also said previously that he would be very surprised if I’d picked a white dress, because it so obviously wasn’t ‘me’. I still wanted it to have that bridal of look though, this was my wedding day after all!! The problem is that in Australia, there aren’t very many places where you can go for alternative bridal dresses, it’s just

The website was Wedding Dress Fantasy and the dresses are made custom to your measurements and you are kept updated throughout the whole process, so that helped with some of the nerves that I had in ordering a dress online. Most people reacted how I thought they would to be honest, they all loved it. In fact, everyone who commented on the dress on the day, or who has seen a picture since then has had that same ‘WOOOOOW’ kind of reaction, it’s pretty great. I was a little worried about how my mother would react both to getting a non-traditional dress AND ordering it online, but she was

fine. She could see that it was perfect for me and watching a video of the dressmaker going through the different layers and construction of the dress while explaining all of the materials used really helped her to accept that it would be high quality. My favorite part of the dress is definitely the layers of lace. Up close, the detail is actually quite stunning. Looking back, what did you love most about your wedding?

The reception was definitely a highlight for me. Obviously the ceremony was just beautiful and I will always cherish the memory of it, but the reception was the time when everyone relaxed, celebrated and danced the night away. My dad got up to sing with the band and even managed to convince me to sing as well! Even now, I still hear people talk about how much fun they had at our wedding and I’m so glad that was a priority for us in the planning stage.

The Unique Bride ♦ 91

What advice would you give a bride planning her own UNIQUE wedding? You need to remember that your wedding is for you and your partner – it’s not for your mother, not for his parents, aunts, uncles, friends, second cousins… for YOU! Don’t just include (or exclude!) something because it’s what people ‘normally’ do at a wedding, really think about how you feel about it and whether it represents you both and the life that you’re starting together, after all, you will look back on and remember this day for the rest of your lives. Don’t spend that time regretting what you did or didn’t do because you followed someone else’s idea of how your wedding should be, if there is some aspect of it that you want to make unique for you both, just do it! ♦

Are You Attracted to

the Wrong Men? by Barry Price

“They may be guys who are birds with broken wings who you just find yourself drawn to wanting to mend, and take care of, and fix.”

Are you really attracted to guys who are bad for you?

They may be bad boys. They may be guys who are birds with broken wings who you just find yourself drawn to wanting to mend, and take care of, and fix. So many women

have this urge, this chemistry, this attraction to guys who they know aren’t good for them, yet still feel a sexual and emotional attraction that’s intoxicating, if not irresistible. So if this is an experience that you have had, or are still having, whether you’re single and continually attract the wrong kinds of men, or whether you’re actually with somebody who is actually good for you, but you still find that chemistry button getting pushed when certain kinds of “bad boys” who are emotionally unavailable are around, then there are a couple of things you want to keep in mind to fix this fatal attraction. missing

One of the things that happens with attraction, is that we are attracted to somebody who fits some kind of “story” that we have about our lives. Quite often this begins in the past. The famous Sigmund Freud thought that all of our issues were from our opposite gendered parent. For women it would be, “What was your father like?” But we have come a long way since Freud. So even though there is some truth to the idea that if you had an emotionally unavailable father you might be attracted to men who aren’t available to you, sometimes, I find women trying to date the exact opposite, hoping to break their pattern. However, dating the typical sensitive, reliable nice guy archetype doesn’t always work either. Often there is just something missing, that

spark passion

spark that creates passion. Men with whom there is a lot of hot chemistry initially, but who prove, over time, to be unreliable and not there for you when it counts, ultimately fall into the category of being immature and insecure boys hiding in the shape of a sexy man. These ‘boys’ get what they want and then disappear, push you away or let you down. Why do you keep going back? Maybe you’ve gotten used to the drama and intensity the bad boy brings to your relationships. Or maybe you tried being with a guy who was nice, steady and reliable and endured a dull, boring and lifeless relationship that lacked the juicy spontaneity that we expect in our lives. So what can you do to make sure that you aren’t making the same mistakes over and over again with guys

who will love you and leave you, or, even worse, “lay” you and leave you? Let me share how to stop attracting guys who are incapable of making a truly deep emotional commitment. One of the reasons you’re caught in this pattern is because you are attracted to guys who, at first blush, may seem manly and masculine in superficial ways, but you fail to notice the red flags that tell you they have deep insecurities that make them emotional little boys. This is an ever-growing problem today for a lot of strong, independent modern women who attracting men who seem masculine on the outside, maybe being well built, seemingly confident, and weakening your knees with how he pairs his slight stubble with a power suit or leather jacket. Maybe your particular poison is the emotionally brooding artist or intellectual. Or it could be the married man, who really did have what it took to commit to being a husband, but unfortunately, not to you. Whatever that type pushes those buttons for you, there’s a really good chance that he has cues that you are interpreting as “masculinity”, when

the exact opposite is true beneath the surface. Let’s take for example, the typical bad boy. What is attractive about this detached, unattainable, slightly mysterious man? Some of the appeal is that bad boys cannot be tamed. That he represents the freedom to do what he wants, when he wants. He says the things to you that nice guys aren’t willing to do and say. He surprises you. He’s unapologetically himself, even if it hurts you. What a contrast to men who seem to lack any daring or backbone.

Are You Attracted to the Wrong Men? ♦ 101

Years of encountering feminized, sensitive, nerdy men can make you more susceptible to being drawn to men who seem to have that masculine male side. The problem is, the type of masculine guy we described above is a mirage. It’s an illusion. The truth is, you need a better way to identify men and boys so that you don’t attract the wrong guys (and so you aren’t attracted to the wrong guys). One of the first things that will tip you off to him being the wrong kind of guy is that he actually

102 ♦ GoNearlyNaked.

needs you to want him. He likes to be charismatic, seductive, the center of attention, but he doesn’t want to have to try too hard. If you stop chasing him, it bothers him. This is a guy who’s always going to make you work harder than he is willing to work at the courtship and relationship. These are pretty good clues and red flags you should pay attention to very early on. He is trying to to make up for his deep insecurity around women by having women validate him by treating him as desirable.

Another example of ‘the wrong guy’ is the emotionally unavailable guy. This may be a guy who’s warm, fun and charismatic or seems very loving right until he has to be emotionally open and intimate, or until he is called upon to make a personal sacrifice and he is totally unwilling to do so. He’s just not capable of doing that because it requires him to go to a depth where he could be hurt. The problem with this type of boy is that he is addicting. He shows you the sensitive side of himself, and you see his potential, if he would just open up. If only he could only see it... If he could only let his heart open up... If he could only see what you see! If he could only see what was possible for the two of you with all of this chemistry. But ladies, listen up, that’s fools gold: believing that we can change somebody else. That’s not love, that’s self-abuse. One of the primary tenants of finding a soul mate, a partner that is really good for you, is believing that a man is exactly who he shows you he is. Not with his words, but with his actions. So you have discount the reassurances. Don’t let these boys

talk you out of what you know in your gut. “Just give me some space.” Plug your ears and use your eyes and gut. Is he showing up for you? Is he consistent? Does he show you that he loves you and cares? Is he willing to sacrifice effort, energy, time and resources for you? Is this the kind of person who demonstrates commitment and follow through in his other affairs or is he somebody that is always on the move? Always running away or pointing the finger and blaming others, whether ex-bosses, ex-friends, or ex-wives. A man takes accountability. A blamer is a boy. Got it? Good.

“It women so much to attract men: emotionally, the .” financially and

Being attracted to the “wrong men” may feel very sexy at first because we are living in the fantasy phase; that sexy, energetic tension. That deliciousness of mystery. But that mystery is because he withholds who he authentically is, holding his cards (and heart) close to his chest. That mysterious thing begins to wear thin for his partner when emotional intimacy begins to deepen for you, and he is still holding back. This is when some women will say “You aren’t giving me what I need.” and they’ll end it. But others, especially ones with a pattern of feeling used by men, get triggered by his emotional unavailability. The more you fall in love while he holds back, the bigger the gap you become desperate to close. You may be one of those people who tries harder when

you feel him pulling away. This only makes him pull away more. You may see him coming back only when he needs something. Ironically, this is only when you start to pull away. This is why, when you finally begin to let go of him emotionally, suddenly, there he is again and you end up feeling like an emotional yo yo. One minute they want you, the next minute they don’t want you. It’s confusing and batters your heart. It puts your life on an emotional and energetic roller-coaster that doesn’t let you focus on anything else, including work. Like one of my clients, who, when we started working together, wasn’t able to create a new program for her business, because the yo-yo effect of a bad relationship. A toxic boy had her bouncing around like a ping pong ball so she

couldn’t focus or access her deep energy to bring new abundance into her life or move forward. It costs women so much to attract the wrong men: emotionally, financially and energetically. You’ll find yourself losing your self-confidence and just staying at home on the couch instead of enjoying life, newtorking for business, meeting new friends, or finding a soulmate who does appreciate you and ‘get’ you. In fact, you may get to the point where you think “What’s the point of meeting another guy if he is only gonna hurt me, disappoint me, leave me feeling lesser-than because he’s choosing not to be around me?” Break the cycle before it breaks you. Escaping the “wrong men” trap begins with identifying the traits we mentioned above, and accepting, with self-honesty, that they are pulling away because of their own own insecurities and fear, not because you are unworthy of their love. Observe yourself and see whether it triggers your own insecurity that he’s not choosing you. If your thoughts immediately go to not feeling good enough, and that maybe that’s why

you

he is pulling away, then stop your thinking right there! Don’t buy into the fear that you should try harder, offer more and become who he wants you to be. That is the moment where it becomes totally toxic. I encourage to watch for that moment and make a different choice next time. So, the next time you have attracted a man who makes you fear he is pulling away, choose to love yourself instead. Leave his withdrawal with him because it’s about him. So, if you’re ready to stop attracting the wrong men and relationships learn to identify them as boys early on with the signals we’ve discussed today and learn to walk away. The best love of all is the one where you put yourself first. ♦ Are You Attracted to the Wrong Men? ♦ 105

GUILTY PLEASURE of the MONTH

We love Sangria any time of the year. Now that Fall is here and apples are in season, infusing some fresh apple cider and spice into the sangria is the perfect transition from Summer to Fall. This will quickly become your favorite guilty pleasure!

INGREDIENTS: ♦ 3 cups apple cider (fresh & organic if

Source

available) ♦ 1-2 Tbsp sugar or stevia (to taste) ♦ Mulling spices (or 6 cloves and 4 cinnamon sticks) ♦ 1 apple, cored and sliced ♦ 1 pear, cored and sliced ♦ 1 cup red seedless grapes ♦ 1 cup blackberries or pomegranate (optional) ♦ 2 1/2 cups red wine (Shiraz is our favorite) ♦ 1/2 cup Cointreau or Triple Sec ♦ 1/4 cup Brandy

Directions: Combine the apple cider, sugar, mulling spices, and cinnamon sticks, and heat over medium heat until the sugar is dissolved. Strain, then allow to cool. Combine all remaining ingredients in a pitcher and add cooled cider. The sangria tastes best if it sits at least 3 hours, and even better if it sits overnight (if you can wait that long). For a fizzy sangria, add club soda just before serving. Serves 6-7. Enjoy! Guilty Pleasure of the Month ♦ 107

October gets its name from the Latin word Octo meaning eight.

Why eight if October is the tenth month? In the old Roman calendar, October was the eight month, hence its name. Once January and February were added into the now adopted Julian and Gregorian Calendars, October became the tenth month of the year.

October Section ♌ 109

OCTOBER October is associated with Fall in the Northern Hemisphere and with Spring in the Southern Hemisphere. One of the most notable aspects of Fall are the gorgeous colors of the Fall foliage in New England. Mid-late October is when you can see most of the peak foliage and when the green leaves become overtaken with pockets of brilliant color. Here are some October

photos taken in New England by Photographer Jeremy Pollack.

October Fashion Tips Although the weather is cooling down in the Northern Hemisphere and color tones are becoming more earthy and neutral, you can still show off your summer spirit by introducing some bold colors to your wardrobe. October = orange, and this Fall the color Koi will be found everywhere. Instead of blending it with the traditional earthy tones like brown or dark green, make a real statement by pairing it with bold and bright colors like Turquoise and Vivacious Pink. It will be the perfect transition from Summer to Fall.
