/ WED SE 11 ART SHOW til 9pm 6-9pm GONERFEST Hi Tone)Open September 25 om ay fr sd n w ne ed do W rs Opening veland (3 Doo lery 422 N Cle Crosstown Gal nday Noon- 6pm Su daily — Open TIM KERR was born and raised on the Texas coast on the Gulf of Mexico, just south of Galveston. There he began to surf and play guitar . He had a wonderful childhood, but hated high school. He will tell you that surfing, music and his friend and later-tobe-wife, Beth saved him during those high school years. Some of his continuing musical influences were formed early and include British invasion bands, soul music, British folk and acoustic music (Bert Jansch, John Martyn, etc.) Tim moved to Austin in 1974 to attend The University of Texas at Austin and there he earned a degree in painting and photography. While in the art department, he studied under famed photographer Garry Winogrand and was awarded a Ford Foundation grant for his work. Tim is also well-known for his slashing guitar work in seminal punk bands The Big Boys, Poison 13, Monkeywrench, Lord High Fixers and more.

Mr. Anthony has made up his own word, “intertwangleism,” a label he paints on a lot of his pieces, which he defined this way: “Inter, meaning to mix,” he said. “And twang, a distinct way of speaking. If I make up my own ‘ism,’ no one can say anything or tell me I’m doing it wrong.”

His artwork combines social awareness with iconic figures and searing images, often on skateboards. BRUCE LEE WEBB is the co-conspirator and co- creator of Webb Gallery in downtown Waxahachie, Texas. He loves hobo lore and train car graffiti. He is a researcher and collector by nature and is currently working on “As Above So Below -Art of the Fraternal Lodge” with co-author Lynne Adele, which will be published by UT Press in 2015. MR. JOHN HENRY TONEY grew up in Sandfort, Alabama and farmed all his life. He used to drive a tractor around Seale and plow up folk’s garden patches for them. One day he plowed up a turnip with a human face on it… His art career was born. He’s 83 years old and draws everyday.

Butch did a show in the Goner Store in 2004 which was a huge thrill for us. In the ten years since that show, Butch has become strangely sorta famous, but hasn't changed a bit. We're honored to have his art at Gonerfest 11. BUTCH ANTHONY — “The art thing,” as Mr. Anthony likes to say, began in 1994 and can be summed up with this oft-told tale: John Henry Toney, now 82, was then a local tractor-for-hire. Plowing Mr. Anthony’s garden one day, he unearthed a gnarly turnip with a human countenance and made a drawing of it. As a joke, he and Mr. Anthony stuck it in the window of a friend’s junk shop with a $50 price tag, whereupon it was scooped up by Scott Peacock, the Atlanta-area chef and longtime collaborator of Edna Lewis, dame of Southern cooking. “I thought, ‘Hell, if John Henry can sell one, I’ll try too,’ ” said Mr. Anthony, who embellished a “motel” painting — a cheap still life — “with a scraggly old paintbrush and some old paint set” bought at a Possum Trot auction. Not to be outdone, another friend, James Snipes, known as

TIMMY LAMPINEN — Human Eye / Timmy’s Organism / Clone Defects frontman is also a 2010 Kresge Grant Arts award winner. As Timmy’s music strives for wild abandon and maximum impact via spaced-out sounds, his artwork opens your third eye and squeezes in a couple more. Cosmic, dirty, freaked out and fun.

Memphis Made + Goner Beer In an unprecedentedly courageous venture, Memphis’ fantastic MEMPHIS MADE BREWERY has endeavored to produce two new beers for consumption during Gonerfest Eleven. Brewmaster Drew Barton had this to say about his creations:

GBR – Nothing beats a hot Memphis summer night like a clean, crisp

golden ale crossing your lips. Cream ales are known for their light body and easy drinking attitude due to a healthy dose of flaked corn. We decided to make it a true Memphis cream ale and tossed in a bunch of grits in the mash too. This lightened the body even more and helps you forget the misery that has been this summer’s heat. Available at: On draft at all the shows. Any leftover will be at the forth coming Memphis Made Tasting Room.

GUITAR ATTACK IPA – We asked the guys at Goner what they wanted

out of an IPA and it was a resounding, WEST COAST, WEST COAST, WEST COAST. A certain ‘double blood pumper’ IPA was mentioned and we knew right then, it must be Centennial. And it’s a lot of Centennial, so much so, you’re going to see the number 100 in your dreams. Sweet hoppy dreams. 750 ml bottles Available at: Cash Saver, Joe’s Wine and Liquor, and The Growler Memphis will be the main spots, but also available elsewhere around town.

OPENING CEREMONIES

THURSDAY NIGHT

PAUL COLLINS BEAT (New York, NY) Legendary powerpop icon. Played in The Nerves with Peter Case and Jack Lee, releasing a great single with “Hanging On the Telephone” which became a hit for Blondie. Then formed The Beat / Paul Collins Beat, signed to CBS, and released the perfect powerpop album, tougher than the stereotypical skinny-tie wimps, combining the economy of punk rock with killer rock n roll hooks and songs. Has been covered by many, many artists and maintains a DIY guerrilla touring approach that is hard to believe. We are honored and excited to have him open up the festival.

ROSS JOHNSON’S LIKE FLIES ON SHERBERT REVUE (Memphis, TN) 8:45pm The esteemed Panther Burns drummer Johnson leads a cavalcade of Memphis musicians through some of Alex Chilton’s greatest songs with lead guitar and vocal duties taken by Steve Selvidge, whose father, Memphis folkie Sid Selvidge, released the original lp in 1979. Although the album was met with confusion and considered a mess upon its release, it’s become a classic and a favorite of true Memphis music fans, with songs like”My Rival,” “Hook Or Crook,” and “Hey! Little Child” conveying Chilton’s sense of sly fun better than most of the earnest pop perfection of Big Star.

GAZEBO @ COOPER & YOUNG / FREE / 5:30PM

HI TONE / DOORS AT 8PM / DJ SAINT SARAH & DJ GIORGIO MURDERER / MC ABE

GOLDEN PELICANS (Orlando, Florida) 9:45pm

Balls-out Florida punk with a madman for a singer and an energy that seems to run on the residue from a million hash pipes smoked simultaneously whilst listening to a scratchy copy of Black Flag’s Damaged. Nasty, brutal, and utterly captivating. SO COW (Galloway, Ireland) 10:30pm Quirky Irish popsters who have recently displayed a darker, heavier side. New album The Long Con out now on Goner. The band themselves are of the mind that they sound like The Chills or McLusky, but they’ve lost all perspective at this stage so you shouldn’t go taking

their word for it. Returning for their 2nd Gonerfest, true winners of hearts. AUSMUTEANTS (Geelong, Australia) 11:15pm Young Australian synth punk poppers

who lept out of the amazing batch of new Aussie bands with hooks and a sick, sharp sense of humor. First album out on Goner (US) / Aarght (Australia), second on the way. Especially excited to have them for this first US tour for Gonerfest. RADIOACTIVITY (Denton, TX) 12:00am Jeff Burke’s new post-Marked Men outfit, also with Marked Men’s Mark Ryan and Daniel Craig of Wax Musuems/ Bad Sports etc. Perfect punchy punky pop. Hooks that will impale you! You’re doomed! GRIFTERS (Memphis, TN) 1:00am Memphis’ psychedelic pop noise machine, toured with Guided By Voices and Pavement in the 90s, featuring a killer rhythm section, unexpected catchiness, and a focus that approaches psychosis. Recent shows have demonstrated that their particular brand of aggression and melody was not tied to youthful urges, and indeed seems to have become more potent as personalities and voices have distilled over the years.

FRIDAY AFTERNOON

BUCCANEER PARKING LOT / DOORS AT 2PM FREE WITH GOLDEN PASS / $5 WITHOUT / $5 BROOKLYN BREWERY KEG BEER GIMP TEETH (Memphis, TN) 3pm “Made up of current and former Memphis College of Art students, Gimp Teeth delivers short blasts of hardcore punk in the vein of Dischord Records greats like SOA or Red C. The performances are short and chaotic (20 minutes at the most), with front man Cole Wheeler rarely coming up for air while the band blasts behind him.” Memphis Flyer RED SNEAKERS (Nara, Japan) 3:45pm

Another insane two piece from Japan... these guys hung around Memphis for weeks looking for shows, hoping for a spot at Gonerfest 5. When Jay Reatard got sick and couldn’t play on the Saturday Afternoon show, they got their shot and blew minds! We’re very happy to have them back!

BULDGERZ (Memphis, TN) 4:30pm Powerful new hardcore punkers featuring the magnetic personality of one Matt “Pappy” Johnson, one of the best frontmen from Memphis ever, also fronting the underappreciated No Comply. Like a good right cross, sometimes you just gotta get whacked. WILD EMOTIONS (Jackson, MS) 5:15pm New all-girl Jackson garage band with Daphne from Overnight Lows... “Wild Emotions are an all-girl band with a lo-fi, keyboard-punk sound. The song on the A-side,‘Hey Everybody,’would be a perfect track to spin at a Halloween party. It’s a fun, simple song you could easily pogo to in your ironic costume. The B-side song is called, well, ‘Wild Emotions.’ This song is a bit more chaotic than the other. The vocals are blurry and it has a drunk-speed tempo. All in all, this is a fun little party record.” - Razorcake

CROSSTOWN ALLEY SHOW 8PM ON LOADING DOCK BEHIND HI TONE / FREE

MANCONTROL (Memphis, TN) Experimental music-making from Dave Shouse (Grifters, Those Bastarard Souls, Bloodthirsty Lovers) and Robby Grant (Vending Machine, Big Ass Truck, Mouserocket), also featuring John Argroves on drums.

FRIDAY NIGHT

HI TONE / DOORS AT 8PM / DJ RICH AROMA / MC TIMMY LAMPINEN DIE ROTZZ (New Orleans, LA) 9pm

New Orleans legends with funny, tough punk songs. Be ready for a true New Orleans punk rock attack. Andy, Marvin, and Paul don’t do no half-steppin.

ANGIE (Sydney, Australia) 9:45pm Veteran of Ruined Fortune, Circle Pit, Southern Comfort, and who came through Gonerfest playing bass with Straight Arrows a few years back. Angie Garrick has been busy! Her solo album on Easter Bilby is a vivid dreamlike affair, full of implied melodies and instinctually correct moves, even if not obvious ones. DUTCH MASTERS (Memphis TN / Oxford, MS) 10:30pm Memphis band from mid-2000s whose recordings have only now been released in long-playing format, on the “All In The Wires” lp on Spacecase Records. A sporadic collaboration between Eric “Oblivian” Friedl and Scott Rogers (Cool Jerks, Jenny Jeans), with Talbot Adams on bass and Punk Rock Pat McKeague on drums, for this show replaced by Neckbones’ / AAAA New Memphis Legs powerhouse Forrest Hewes. WARM SODA (Oakland, CA) 11:15pm Outta time lo-fi gems oozing grooves oft the late 70s, with incredibly catchy hooks blaring through a haze of tape hiss and distorted guitars. “Oakland’s Warm Soda, aka one of our 2013 bands on the rise, is almost too easy to love: That lo-fi fuzz, those jangly, sugar-sweet hooks, that sudden urge to be lightly buzzed at someone’s backyard barbecue the summer before you left for college.” - San Francisco Bay Guardian DEAF WISH (Melbourne, Australia) 12:00am Burly Aussie noise rock- Deaf Wish returns after scorching the stage at Gonerfest 8!

ANGIE

“Each song more frenzied and filled with treble-kicking guitar and splatterhead drumming than the last.” -Mess+Noise

LEN BRIGHT COMBO (UK) 1:00am Legendary Medway punk/garage pop combo featuring Wreckless Eric with Bruce Brand and Russ Wilkins, the Milkshakes rhythm section. Punchy pop that transcends time and space. We are proud to host them in their only appearance anywhere! A dream come true! Look for recent reissues on Fire Records. “...the peerless merging of pristine pop songwriting and deathless aural terrorism” - Dave Thompson, Allmusic “Yes, the Combo are back. Older, wiser, and probably a lot louder”- Mojo Magazine

SATURDAY AFTERNOON

MURPHY’S / DOORS AT NOON / FREE WITH GOLDEN PASS / $10 WITHOUT

OU T SI DE SICK THOUGHTS (Baltimore, MD) 1:30pm Sick Thoughts are Baltimore’s Drew Owen with a drummer and sometimes even a band, playing in-your-face punk rock n roll in stripped-down Reatards mode. No apologies straightforward punk rock. Go nuts! Goner single in the works! COOL RUNNINGS

(Auckland, NZ) 2:00pm Frantic Kiwi punks set to ignite Saturday afternoon from within! “Built from the weakest links of every seminal Auckland band of the last 10 years, Cool Runnings are four dudes just trying to get by. Fuzzed up and stupid hits from the bong.” SON OF VOM (Meltzer, USA) 3:00pm First and probably last band devoted solely to preforming the compositions of the pre-Angry Samoans outfit VOM, who were fronted by notoriously cranky (and great) music critic Richard Meltzer. Featuring members of many Memphis groups, including Final Solutions, Manateees, and Nots. GOOCH PALMS (Newcastle, Australia) 4:00pm These two are an unstoppable force that have been turning heads and boners everywhere they go. They play catchyas-hell pop music for the underdogs of this world, singing songs about bogan

life in a small industrial town on an isolated continent in a far away hemisphere. Not to mention a lot of songs about outer-space. “Nudity, blood and violence served right alongside genuine and elated enthusiasm is what audiences have come to expect from these two” - Triple Unearthed LIFE STINKS (SF, CA) 5:00pm When we heard that The Outdoorsmen’s Chad Kawamura had a new band, we figured it would be good- we just couldn’t imagine it would be this good. Sludgy, misanthropic pound with songs that hold up and cycle through your brain for hours, and days, often against your will. “Life Stinks might be one of the last real punk bands in the great tradition of The Stooges, Germs and Flipper. People who had absolutely no fucking clue how to play music other than their gut instincts and reactions to what’s happening around them. It’s music in its rawest and truest sense.” - It’s Psychedelic Baby Magazine CONNECTIONS (Columbus, OH) 6:00pm “Connections is a group of Columbus, Ohio underground rock lifers. Singer Kevin Elliott and guitarist Andy Hampel’s high school band, 84 Nash, was the first non-GBV-affiliated act to see release on Rockathon Records. Elliott’s brother, Adam, played drums and sang in the now-dormant noise-pop trio Times New Viking and guitarist Dave Capaldi played in the post-punk band El Jesus de Magico.” - Pitchfork

I N SI DE SCOTT & CHARLENE’S WEDDING (Footscray, Australia) 2:30pm “Scott and Charlene’s Wedding sound grounded—but not gridlocked—on Any Port in a Storm securing their reputation as one of the most heartfelt acts inspired by the ‘90s, and one of the few who bring a more contemporary urgency to that sound.” - Allmusic STEVENS (Melbourne, Australia) 3:30pm “On ‘Hindsight,’ they bring the rich melodic pop of their previous work to the top of the mix with a whining synth and crisp production, maintaining some of the almost timid quality of their earlier recordings but giving themselves a much fuller sound.” - Pitchfork TERRY & LOUIE (Portland / New Orleans) 4:30pm A special treat for Gonerfest, Terry Six and Louie Bankston unite to play some songs they worked up with the Exploding Hearts and some of their own material as well, backed up by New Orleans superstars. Back in 2002 Louie moved to Portland, OR to work with his band 10-4 Backdoor. Working at the fairgrounds, running the Avalanche and other carnival rides, Louie ran into the kids who would become the Exploding Hearts, eventually joining the band and playing rudimentary keyboards. You can hear Louie’s input in the Hearts now, especially after you’ve heard Louie’s more powerpop outlet Missing Monuments. Although a tragic car crash in 2003 took the lives of the other three members of the band, the music lives on through Terry & Louie and the great recordings the Exploding Hearts left us.

NATHAN ROCHE

NATHAN ROCHE (Sydney, Australia) 5:30pm Ex-Camperdown & Out artist goes solo to devastating effect. This Sydney native writes songs that are a little loopy like the Memphis Limes, but with a different propulsion, and different compulsions. You might hear some Lou Reed in his songs, and I hear the Twinkeyz, too. Good mix! WEATHER WARLOCK (New Orleans, LA) 6:30pm WEATHER WARLOCK is a heavy drone band which uses sun, wind, rain, and temperature to control a monster analog synth designed by Quintronics in New Orleans, LA. and at the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation in Florida WEATHER WARLOCK ONLY PLAYS DURING SUNRISE OR SUNSET OUR SHOWS LAST FROM 30 MINUTES TO ONE YEAR LONG OUR LINEUP WILL CONSIST OF ZERO TO NINE MEMBERS

SATURDAY NIGHT

HI TONE / DOORS AT 8PM / DJ HOT TUB ERIC & DJ USELESS EATER MC ROSS JOHNSON OBNOX (Cleveland, OH) 9pm Bim from Bassholes fame in a whirlwind of his own design. Alternating between Cheater Slicksian clouds of noise, hip hop beats and respectable rhymes, and pure head-scratching moments that work, Bim has created a beast that demands attention. NOTS (Memphis, TN) 9:45pm And then they were four! Natalie, Charlotte, Madison, and Allie bring the post-punk noise full force. Debut lp recorded by Doug Easley out this November on Goner! “They’ve sewn garage rock’s sloppy, swampy howlings to wiry, economical punk – the yelped girl-gang vocals & seesaw rhythm running throughout the blistering minute & a half of ‘Dust Red’, in particular, make them sound like the evil triplet sisters of The Urinals.” - Erika Elizabeth, Collapse Board SPRAY PAINT (Austin, TX) 10:30pm Fantastic, in-their-own-world postpunk trio from Austin who push aside rock n roll cliches and indie rock cliches and play with tension and release better than any band going right now. 2nd Gonerfest appearance and very worthy one at that!

THE REBEL

THE REBEL (Hertfordshire, UK) 11:15pm One man band of Ben Wallers, frontman of the UK’s Country Teasers. Many of Ben’s songs play on controversial concepts or points of view, including class, race, and sexism, often delivered in first-person without a buffer of sarcasm. This leads to quiten enjoyable confusion from arbiters of taste, be they music critics or commenters on important internet message boards and Facebook. Wallers don’t mind. A fan of The Cure, The Fall, Man2Man,

Devo, Ice Cube, Datblygu, Jon Wayne and many other bands, The Rebel tends towards minimalist songs with keyboard, samples, and guitar, some straightforward, some much more experimental in nature. PROTOMARTYR (Detroit, MI) 12am Massive, near gothic soundscapes matched with a deadpan, normal-guy frontman. Weary but exhilarating! Effortlessly fantastic! 17 hour drive to make it to this show. Show them your love! “Protomartyr are modern-day snake charmers. Settle into one of the group’s serpentine grooves and you may very well end up hypnotized.” - Detroit Music Magazine GIZMOS - Original 1977 Lineup (Bloomington, IN) 1am Bloomington, Indiana legends who uncannily predated Punk and created a uniquely Midwestern take on “real rock n roll” as the Dictators had done in New York- songs about their lives as awkward, too-smart rock n roll fans. Not hearing the kind of music they wanted to hear on the radio, they took a cue from the Stooges & Velvets and made their own songs! We cannot believe The Gizmos are playing Gonerfest! Don’t miss ‘em!

THE GIZMOS

SUNDAY AFTERNOON CLOSING CEREMONIES GAZEBO @ COOPER & YOUNG / FREE

GILA MAN (Desert, Arizona) 2:30pm Gila Man is Ryan Rousseau, who has played EVERY Gonerfest under many guises- in the Reatards, Destruction Unit, Ryan Rousseau & His Desert Children, Earthmen & Strangers, Yuma Territorial Prison Guard, and more! He returns with a deep desert-fried crunked-up psychedelic stew under the name Gila Man.

KING BROTHERS (Kansai, Japan) 3:30pm King Brothers began as a Kansai kamikaze version of Guitar Wolf /Jon Spencer frantic rock n roll destruction and ended up on a major label in Japan somehow with a Rolling Stones groove added to their flailing attack. After a brief hiatus King Brothers are BACK with guitarists Keizo and Maya and new drummer Zony.

SUNDAY NIGHT AT THE BUCCANEER 9PM FREE / DJ SACK TRIPPER & DJ INSPEKTOR SODA POP

NO BANDS! Hang out, maybe actually talk to some folks. Enjoy a quieter night.

THINGS TO TRY TO DO IN MEMPHIS WHILE YOU’RE AT GONERFEST Memphis is full of fun spots to visit, some spots that are full of history, other spots that are full of life.... And history, too! Memphis, as the biggest city in the Mid-South, has always attacted a wide variety of people from Arkansas, Mississippi, and Missouri, looking for a way out of small-town life or just some fun on the weekend. In the past 20 years, the low cost of living also contributed to an influx of immigrants from Vietnam, Mexico, and elsewhere. So ethnic food can be surprisingly good and inexpensive, and what we lack in 4 Star restaurants Memphis makes up for in unpretentious Soul Food, no matter who is cooking it. Anyway, please enjoy Memphis, and although you may think it’s the greatest city on Earth for a week, know that there is a high crime rate so watch yourself if you go wandering off in to the unknown. Also, Memphis has nowhere near as many Australians the other 51 weeks of the year.

SUN STUDIO 706 Union Ave (901) 521-0664 One amazing room. One amazing man. Sam Phillips changed the world. Ike Turner, Howlin Wolf, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Little Milton, Roy Orbison, and tons more. Unreal. STAX STUDIO MUSEUM 926 E McLemore Ave (901) 942-7685 If you can come out of this tour without wanting to wear Rufus Thomas’ kneehigh green boots we don’t want to know you. The hall of records will bring most Gonerfesters to their knees. Isaac

Hayes’ talking gold Cadillac! Listen to individual instruments from Booker T & The MGs recordings! Highest recommendation. THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER The Mississippi is the whole reason Memphis exists. It’s huge. It’s awesome. There are barges. And sunsets. Don’t miss it. Probably not advised to swim it. Remember Jeff Buckley. Across the river lies... West Memphis, Arkansas! There a dog track there and (sort of) a casino! PEABODY DUCKS PEABODY HOTEL Union & 2nd St A tuxedoed Duck Master leads the ducks into a fountain in the middle of the Peabody Hotel lobby at 11am each morning and back up to their penthouse digs at 5pm. Ridiculous? Yeah! Gorgeous hotel lobby & bar. Pricey, but the ducks are free! Stop by and cheer. NATIONAL CIVIL RIGHTS MUSEUM 450 Mulberry St., 38103 A stirring tribute to the Civil Rights Movement at the motel where Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated. GRACELAND 3734 Elvis Presley Blvd, 38116 Elvis is king, and his house is a perfect 1970s time capsule. Kinda pricey (over $30), but, if you’re in the right mood, fun. When you get back home all your friends will ask you if you went there, so you might as well go. The hall of jumpsuits & other costumes is great! The Jungle Room rules. We keep getting older, Graceland stays the same age. RIP PAUL MCCLOUD of Holly Springs, MS’s amazing, unexplainable Graceland Too.

ROCK N SOUL MUSEUM 191 Beale Street (901) 205-2533 Smithsonian-quality music museum in the heart of downtown next to FedExForum, home of the Memphis Grizzlies! GIBSON GUITAR FACTORY 145 Lt Geo W Lee Ave (901) 544-7998 SGs, Les Pauls, and other Gibson models are made in this downtown factory. A must for you guitar nuts! FULL GOSPEL TABERNACLE CHURCH 787 Hale Rd, Memphis, TN 38116 Al Green’s home church. The right Reverend conducts services when he’s in town... get gussied up and bring some cash for the collection plate! A wild, emotional time. Sunday service at 11:30, prepare to stay awhile.

JAY REATARD’S GRAVE Memorial Park Cemetery 5668 Poplar Avenue “You can’t kick me out of Gonerfest! That’s like kicking Jimi Hendrix out of Woodstock!” Jay was a huge part of Gonerfest and we miss him greatly, especially this time of year. His grave is next to Isaac Hayes’ in a prime spot in the cemetery, across from the Crystal Grotto, which is also worth a look.

DRINKING & NIGHTCLUBS LAMPLIGHTER 1702 Madison (901) 726-9916 Goner’s favorite beer joint ever. You can bring your own booze if you pay for set-ups. One of the best burgers in Memphis. You can always find out what else is going on by stopping in here. RIP Miss Shirley. We still miss you. BUCCANEER 1368 Monroe (901) 278-0909 The site of the first Gonerfest, and our favorite Pirate-themed venue in the city. Great bartenders, smoky and cozy. Cozy! Friday Afternoon show is a blast! MURPHY’S 1589 Madison (901) 726-4193 Across the street from what used to be the Well and Antenna Club, back in those days Murphy’s supplied the hard

alcohol to the rockers punking it up across the street. Enjoy the Saturday afternoon blowout- always a Gonerfest favorite! THE BEAUTY SHOP 966 South Cooper St (901) 272-7111 Around the corner from Goner on Cooper. Excellent restaurant also serves elegant & impressive concoctions- think BRUNCH! Next door to Bar DKDK- a hip small bar serving small plates with an always-changing menu. Cool. GREENCORK 2156 Young Ave (901) 207-5281 New wine-on-tap restaurant conveniently located directly next to Goner. Be nice to our neighbors! Check out their joint!

MEMPHIS EATS Eating is a big deal in Memphis. Barbecue and soul food (fried chicken, pork chops, etc) have been honed to a fine -yet still cheap- science. Here are a few of our favorite places & others of note. Be sure to tell ‘em you’re here for Gonerfest!

PAYNE’S BBQ 1762 Lamar (901) 272-1523 The world’s greatest chopped shoulder sandwich. Comes with nuclear yellow/ green slaw. Smoked Sausage, too! No booze. Housed in a converted old garage. Cool! GUS’ FRIED CHICKEN 310 S Front (901) 527-4877 World famous fried chicken with a spicy, chunky crust, served with a quart of beer… YES! Frying chicken can take a while so don’t be in a rush. Sides taste like they came straight from a can, unfortunately. Stick with the meat! COZY CORNER 745 N Parkway (901) 527-9158 Famous for their Cornish game hens, which I’ve never tried ‘cause it would mean missing out on eating more RIBS! Saucy. Great. HAVANA’S PILON 143 Madison Ave New Cuban place Downtown, a good change of pace with Ropa Vieja, sandwiches, soups, and fish. And of course Shrimp Mofungo. So much fun to say. DÉJÀVU Original location: 936 Florida St (901) 942-1400 New Location: 51 S Main St (901) 505-0212 Downtown Cajun restaurant is only open during the day. Amazing New Orleans food. Chef Gary rules. New location on Main street lacks a little of the vibe of the original but none of the flavor. Check it out! AREPA & SALSA 662 Madison Ave (901) 433-9980 Venezuelan food in The Edge districtbetween Downtown & Midtown. Another change of pace. AL-RAYAN MIDDLE EASTERN FOOD 288 N Cleveland St (901) 272-0227 Cheap and near the Hi Tone. MEXICAN FOOD Find Summer or Macon Rd and drive East. Stop wherever you feel like, but our favorites are Los Picosos, Taqueria La Guadalupana, and the taco truck a bit further East from Guadalupana, all on Summer, but there is excellent food up and down both Summer and Macon. There are also plenty of gringo-ized “Mexican” food restaurants around that serve “Mexican food” better used as stomach-lining for massive margarita consumption. Which is not bad if you know what you’re there for.

ABYSSINIA 2600 Poplar Ave (901) 321-0082 Spicy, great Ethiopian dishes. Can your stomach take it? Love the spongey injera bread. VEGETARIAN FOOD Beware the Memphis vegetables in most restaurants- they have usually been cooked with meat. Ask! But there are vegetarian options For Midtown & Downtown your best bets are probably: VIETNAMESE FOOD: SAIGON LE 51 N Cleveland St, (901) 276-5326 Close to Hi Tone, excellent and fresh. PHO HOA BINH 1615 Madison Ave (901) 276-0006 Next To Murphys’ on Madison. Cheap Lunch Buffet. INDIAN FOOD Both of these have nice lunch buffets INDIA PALACE 1720 Poplar Ave (901) 278-1199 GOLDEN INDIA 2097 Madison Ave (901) 728-5111
