WELCOME TO GONERFEST 14
Gonerfest 14…could it be? Well, it is! We’re glad you’re with us, both devoted returnees and fresh faces. Another year of doing this means another year with a bunch of people from across the globe playing music, watching music, and enjoying the company of people you might not otherwise even meet. It’s worked so far, so we got together another lineup featuring international and local acts, ranging from the legendary brit-pop/RnB singer Derv Gordon of the Equals to the young, angry Judy and the Jerks, swingin’ through from Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Night shows at the Hi Tone, day shows at Memphis Made Brewing and Murphy’s, Bar B Q, beer...you know the drill. If you don’t, you’ll learn quick. Again, we’re excited you’re here. Be safe, have fun, and boogie.

GONERFEST ART SHOW Wednesday, September 27, 5:00pm Crosstown Arts | 422 N. Cleveland Check out the mural on the southwest corner of the Crosstown Arts building just north of the Hi Tone... our artist for this year, PEELANDER YELLOW, spreads his message of chaos and fun in this revolving space provided by Crosstown Arts (at press time, we have no idea what the mural will be.) Join us for the Gonerfest Art Reception at Crosstown Arts. You can meet the artist, get your wristbands, and check out the brand new mural!
BEER? BEER!
2
For the past three years, our friends down the street at Memphis Made Brewing have been kind enough to brew us two of our own special beers specifically for Gonerfest. This year they are at it again. GONERFEST 14 Sessions IPA has been brewed AND canned for purchase in local retail grocers! On top of that, the standard Gonerbrau, a cream ale, will be available in the taproom at the Friday day show at Memphis Made, and at the Hi Tone while it lasts during night shows. Not a fan of india pale ales? That’s cool, hit the keg for a lighter alternative. We noticed that people were drinking some beer and there’s no bigger thrill than having your own beer getting dranked. Drunk? Hey now! Careful out there. FOR REAL- GET A RIDE HOME if you’ve been drinking.

HARAHAN FATS & ABE WHITE New Orleans, LA
We are proud to open our 14th festival with the most original of the OGs, King Louie Bankston himself. Louie’s played the first Gonerfest and has (almost) played every Gonerfest since. Expect hard-won wisdom and street smarts set to accoustic instruments on fire. 6:00pm
GREG CARTWRIGHT Asheville, NC
Memphis’ proud son returns for an accoustic set to begin the festivalGreg knows a million songs and has written some of the best of ‘em. Reigning Sound, Oblivians, Parting Gifts, Compulsive Gamblers and solo- Greg always delivers. We are so happy to have him on board once again.

BLOODBAGS Auckland, NZ
Wild, man. Wild!
Bloodbags’ Andrew Tolley is a legend. Longtime New Zealand record label head, and band member...and yeah, we had Bloodbags on Gonerfest 13. We had to have more! Massive rock from Auckland- don’t miss ‘em this time.

MC A. GORILLA BENNI
New Orleans, LA
New Orleans’ spaced-out synth wizard. Longtime sideman to Natural Child, King Louie’s Projects, Gary Wrong, Heavy Lids and more steps out on his own to spread electronic soundtrack grooves. New album on Goner destroys!
SWEET KNIVES Memphis, TN +
Ex-Lost Sounds move past their past into great new music...with Alicja Trout (River City Tanlines, Clear, Fresh Flesh), Rich Crook (Lover, Knaughty Knights), Johnny Valiant, and John Garland. Sweet Knives played Lost Sounds songs at Murphy’s for Gonerfest 13... they’ve moved into a whole new deal now!

Los Angeles, CA
Boston, MA
DIE GROUP Longtime Goner friend Eric Big Arm plays guitar for this great Los Angeles trio- a grinding, slowed-down punk rock that’s all the more intense in the power it holds back rather than sprays all over the club. Menacing! Reminiscent of the Weirdos / Crime / Urinals but moves beyond all that, too. Midnight
A GIANT DOG Austin, TX
Unrelenting energy... A Giant Dog delivers! High energy pop rocking, wayyyy more punk live than on record. Always at the top of Best Band In Austin conversations... Merge Recording artists...
UNNATURAL AXE Boston band well-known in punk circles for their “They Saved Hitler’s Brain,” featured on the Feel Lucky Punk lp... but really much, much greater band than a one-shot KBD act. Check out the classic groove of “Summertime” for some US pub rock brilliance. The Boston Scene of the 70s (Real Kids, DMZ, Nervous Eaters) somehow still gets shortchanged in the shadow of New York City. “If you were into the Boston punk scene in 1978 or ’79, then you were probably into Unnatural Axe. Who couldn’t love a band that professed to be most influenced by the Dictators, New York Dolls, Ramones and Bobby Orr.”

PEACERS
San Francisco, CA
Sic Alp Mike Donovan brought Ty Segall along to play tambourine at Gonerfest 5 way back in 2008. A lot has changed since then, but Mike’s still spewing songs out of his great psych pop mind - and Peacers rock. New album on Drag City Records. 10:30pm
FOSTER CARE
PEACERS
New York, NY
Maybe the best straightahead punk band going right now, but we’ll let you be the judge. Fast, furious, and just plain good. Like a warm hug with alcohol. Never want it to end. Long may they rage.

Sydney’s unique, menacing buzzsaw of postpunk malevolence! Like Wire or Motorhead, a straightforward sound that never disappoints. That sound opens up into a whole new, brutal world. Sub Pop put out a box set of their original lps. Great, great roar. A noisy Australian band you just can’t help but love.

CRAIG BROWN BAND Detroit, MI
Detroit’s most beloved bartender, cook, and ping-pong champion has gone out on his own and leads this great, rootsy band. We have known and loved Craig for a long time, in bands like Liquor Store, Terrible Twos and the Mahonies. Solo, he’s been described as “Hillbilly Deluxe meets Dive Bar Band Rock.” Not too far from the countryfied Reigning Sound, but with sister harmony background vocals. On Third Man Records. A great way to wind down the weekend.

THINGS TO DO IN MEMPHIS (The Beaten Path)
Here’s tourist stuff and local stuff but you’re gonna run into great people everywhere. Do us a favor and tell ‘em you’re here for Gonerfest. That always blows minds.
SUN
706 Union Ave. A room where sounds were recorded that changed the world. Ike Turner, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Roscoe Gordon, Howlin’ Wolf, Jerry Lee Lewis, that Elvis guy… the list of people that recorded in that room goes on and on! Really incredible. Graham Winchester from The Sheiks (and every other band in Memphis) gives tours- take it!
STAX
926 E McLemore Ave. At our highest recommendation, Stax will undoubtedly blow you away. A groundbreaking label that brought white and black musicians together at a difficult time in American History, the influence of Stax runs deep: Otis Redding, Carla Thomas, Isaac Hayes, Wendy Rene, Johnnie Taylor, and Booker T and the MG’s…
20
GRACELAND
3717 Elvis Presley Blvd. Though the mythos around Graceland is much larger than the estate itself, you can still feel the wild nights that happened in the jungle room, imagine him perusing the lawn in front of his house, and enjoy the notion that he rests eternally in his own back yard. Recent additions have dampened a bit of the magic but the aura can still be caught, no matter how much money they try to squeeze out of the King.
GIBSON GUITAR FACTORY 145 Lt. George Lee Ave. Calling all Guitar Geeks and Gibson Enthusiasts! SG’s, Les Pauls, and other models are made here.
METAL MUSEUM
374 Metal Museum Dr. Inside an old marine hospital on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi lies the country’s only museum dedicated to the fine art of decorative metalwork. The grounds are beautiful, the view of the river is unreal, and with a foundry/ blacksmith shop open for view to the public, this is a perfect destination for any creative Goner to visit.
ROCK AND SOUL MUSEUM
191 Beale St. Excellent exhibition of the history of Memphis music, researched by the Smithsonian. Located Downtown near the Gibson Factory & Beale Street.
BROOKS MUSEUM OF ART 1934 Poplar Ave. Located inside Overton Park is the city’s premier Art Museum. With an expansive history of art covered, many famous and historical creatives are on display here, along with important contemporaries.
MISSISSIPPI RIVER
Hard to catch a bad sunset on any stretch along the Mighty Mississippi. From the long, deeply southern sprawl at Harbor Town, to the new Beale Street Landing, and even further down to the Native American Ceremonial Mound across from the National Ornamental Metal Museum (a place mythically famed for being considered the most beautiful view of the Mississippi by one Mark Twain), each of these locations offers a pretty striking view of the reason Memphis exists. Just don’t take a dip.
FULL GOSPEL TABERNACLE
787 Hale Rd. This is where the Reverend Al Green preaches, and if you can stomach rolling out of your hotel bed Sunday morning, this living legend won’t disappoint.
JAY REATARD’S GRAVE MEMORIAL PARK CEMETERY
5668 Poplar Ave. Take the pilgrimage out east to visit someone very special to the Goner name. He’s right next to Isaac Hayes and across from the very unusual Crystal Shrine Grotto...a man-made crystal cave in the city.
21
THINGS TO DO IN MEMPHIS (Off the Beaten Path)
Respect for the locals gets you a long way in going into any of these less-than-tourist-friendly joints... just keep your smile on and if you’ve got an accent, you’re gold. Be friendly and you’ll end up with more friends than you know what to do with. Southern hospitality is real!
ELMWOOD CEMETERY
824 S. Dudley St. Were there spanish moss in the trees, you’d think you were a bit further south. Beautiful, decadent, and creepy.
CHARLIE FEATHERS’ GRAVE FOREST HILL SOUTH
2545 East Holmes Rd. Out past the Airport is the final resting place of Charlie Feathers. He’s way out in the back, by the treeline.
FURRY LEWIS’ GRAVE HOLLYWOOD CEMETERY
2012 Hernando Rd. In an abandoned Cemetery in South Memphis lies Walter Lewis, local legend and Blues icon. Hard to find and a bit scary, but worth every ounce of Southern Gothic this trip presents.
SUMMER AVE.
Stretch of road replete with restaurants, thrift stores, antique shops, and more!
EBBO SPIRITUAL SUPPLY 1331 Madison Ave. Candles, cards, herbs, and the like!
AL TOWN
Local DIY skate spot a mile from Goner. ASK A LOCAL. And don’t go alone.
22
SOUTHLAND GREYHOUND PARK
1550 Ingram Blvd. West Memphis, AR 72301 In the event your bender leads you to the outer limits of deviant living, cross the bridge into Arkansas and take a visit to the dogs. There’s a buffet, tons of slot machines, and Sammy Hagar’s restaurant. Gnarly.
NIGHT LIFE Midtown
LAMPLIGHTER/ZINNIES
1702 Madison/1688 Madison The lamplighter is a southern beer bar, frequented by local creative types, users, abusers, and losers since the 30’s..maybe longer. Fun jukebox and cash only. Bring your own liquor? Killer. See Chuck Vicious from the Oscars and Charlotte from the Nots tending bar! Across the small parking lot is Zinnies. Not a dive but nothing special, Zinnies has a popcorn machine and Golden Tee in the back room. Birthplace of the shandy bomb...just get one.
MURPHY’S
1589 Madison Ave. Benny has allowed Goner to wreak havoc here for several years now. Pay a visit to the shamrock sometime before or after the Saturday day show.
DKDC/BEAUTY SHOP
964 and 966 S. Cooper Around the corner from Goner are two killer bars for those wanting a little bit more than a bathroom with gnats and beer only. Killer cocktails, amazing food, and amazing staff. DKDC hosts killer DJ sets and great shows, while Beauty Shop holds down the fort for the best beauty-parlor-turned-restaurant in town. DKDC will be this year’s location for the Sunday Come-down, with a DJ and dark atmosphere to reflect on just how heinous you’ve been.
SLIDER INN
2117 Peabody Best deck in Midtown? This is a no frills get drunk and/or grub up spot with killer food and great staff. The massive deck is perfect for early Autumn nights and the music is usually A+.
RAILGARTEN
2166 Central Ave New joint frequently nicknamed Kindergarten for the amount of kids running around… family-friendly sprawling compound with live music, playground, ping pong court, ice cream counter, restaurants, beach volleyball and booze. Did I mention ping pong?
P&H CAFE
1532 Madison Ave. Beer only dive walkways from Murphy’s, but huge. Have a large crew with you? Want to play pool? Care for a burger stuffed with capers and feta? Go here and get down.
PUMPING STATION
1382 Poplar Ave. Where the bathrooms are not gendered, but designated “Master” and “Slave,” slip into the Pump for a completely different night time vibe. It’s big, with two bars and lovely patio, complete with a tree house. If that bark could talk….
23
BLUE MONKEY
2012 Madison Ave. Right next to Historic Ardent Studios sits a quintessential Midtown watering hole with a full bar, fair prices, and betterthan-average pub grub. This Bar is old school and straight forward. Pleasantly dark and clad with ornamental woodworks, the Monkey has some of the most attentive staff in the Midtown bar scene.
DRU’S PLACE
1474 Madison Ave, Having recently received a makeover, Dru’s boasts a killer new environment for Memphis and the LGBTQ community. Just down the street from Murphy’s, Dru’s isn’t just a bar, it’s YOUR bar. Don’t let the beer only option stop you, this spot has a cork fee for any bottle you’d care to grab from the liquor store. Drag queens, pool, karaoke, pizza, and a large patio. Where can you go wrong?
ALEX’S TAVERN
1445 Jackson Ave. One of Memphis only late-night spots, Alex’s doesn’t get poppin’ until 3AM. Two jukebox’s, shuffleboard, and amazing bar food. Get the Greek Burger. Awesome atmosphere.
24
Downtown
ABSINTHE ROOM
162 Beale St. If you do hit Beale Street, we suggest this gem of a bar. Take the black-lit stairs up to what once was Hooks Brothers Photography Studio. Absinthe, streetside pool with a killer view, creeky old floors, vintage movie posters...you can’t go wrong. Having served the Memphis African American Community for the better part of a century, the Hooks Brothers used this former studio to document civil rights leaders, prominent local figures, and musicians….including Robert Johnson. How’s that for some hidden history?
ERNESTINE AND HAZELS
531 S. Main St. Right by the train station, this ex-brothel encapsulates Memphis perfectly. Beer only, great burgers, and 2 stories with multiple rooms to chill in….it is hard to find a more “Memphis” bar. Go there and feel cool as hell.
