WELCOME With this year’s festivities teetering into October and a psychedelic black cat on this year’s poster, it’s no mystery we are looking at 13 years doing this whole festival thing. We’d be concerned with the “bad luck” attributed with the number, but considering our line-up consists of Fred and Toody, Black Lips, OG Reigning Sound, Rev. John Wilkins and many other out of town/out of country talent…..we can’t really find ourselves luckier. Having dedicated fans and lovers of Memphis wards off the bad juju too! So let’s all be safe, have fun, and if you don’t know what “201” means, don’t find out the hard way. We gotta have you for next year. LET’S GO! ON D I S P L AY Torn Down By Thursday Flyers from the Memphis Underground from the 70s til Now
Wednesday, September 28 At Crosstown Arts 5:00pm FREE Every year we try to set up some semblance of an art show the Wednesday before the first official day of the fest, and this year we have something very special to show everyone. A few bays down from the Hi-Tone at Crosstown Arts is TORN DOWN BY THURSDAY - an exhibition of Memphis show flyers from the 70’s until now. As you know, Memphis music history is extremely rich—even for the underground. This exhibition showcases the flyers, posters, and handbills that paint the visual aspect of that history. Wednesday night is the opening, but don’t sweat it, the show will be up til Sunday! Catch it before one of the night gigs at the Hi Tone, because the Cramps poster from their concert at the Orpheum with Panther Burns and The Klitz might be the coolest thing you see while you’re in town. Runs through Sunday, Oct 2nd 1

NOTS
OPENING CEREMONIES At Cooper Young Gazebo 5:30pm
Nots (Memphis, TN)
Kicking off the weekend with songs off their recently released textured, noise wreckage of an album, Cosmetic, plus, a rare chance to see them play in a pre-dinner setting! These women continue to amaze us with their unwavering musical progression; prepare for 5+ minute long psychedelic jams in lieu of the 40 second punk ripper. And don’t fret, they still have rippers… they just clock in at around 2 ½ minutes these days.

R THE LP
THURSDAY (N HI TONE NIGHT SHOW MC Jim Dandy (Memphis, TN)
Frontman for Black Oak Arkansas and major influence on Van Halen singer David Lee Roth.
DJ Michael Bateman (New Orleans, LA)
Circle Bar in-house DJ brings his expansive collection of basically just everything HE likes. Hopefully that includes some rare Memphis rap mentioned in his forthcoming book Memphis Rap Tapes ‘86-98.
9:00pm Hash Redactor (Memphis, TN)
One of the newest additions to the scene in town, Hash Redactor is comprised of a vehemently artistic bunch, long prone to skulking around bars and shows for several years now. Taking notes from the slack jaw of Mark E. Smith and stabbing, yet twinkly, guitars of Women, these cretins have managed to chew up their varied musical interests and spit out something completely reflective of the city only one member is native to: jagged, loose, driving, addictive, and whole heartedly tough.
9:45pm Chook Race (Melbourne, Australia)
“Jangly and poppy, warm and friendly, the album [‘Around the House’ out now on Trouble in Mind] has an unassuming charm that wraps its way around you upon repeat listens. Every song has a big hook -- Chook Race are not afraid of “bah bah bah” choruses -- even if they are demurely presented.” - Bill Pearis

C H O O K R AC E
IGHT), SEPTEMBER 29 10:30pm Counter Intuits (Columbus, Ohio)
“...genius level American garage rock’n’roll, plain and simple. No magic tricks here. Just intelligent and earnest songwriting from two creative minds who seem to have found the perfect compliment to one another.” - Rich Kroneiss, Terminal Boredom
11:15pm Useless Eaters (San Francisco, CA)
Led by Memphian Seth Sutton, the entity of Useless Eaters is an ever revolving cast of talent which spills live shows, records, and charm out of its bag of tricks constantly. Tough as nails and warranting some bodily response, the typically high-end sonic discharge of this band is, in a word, serrated.
FRED & TOODY
12:00am Fred & Toody (Clackamas, OR)
A dream come true! We’re so honored to have Fred & Toody (Dead Moon, Pierced Arrows, the Rats) return to Memphis for Gonerfest. “There’s always been something there, where you know exactly what someone’s thinking, or you say shit at exactly the same time. Fred and I do that all the time. I can actually think of different things, and he’ll do them. If I think hard enough, ‘Uh, roll down your window, it’s hot in here,’ he’ll do it.” - Toody Cole, via She Shreds Magazine
1:00am Reigning Sound - Original Line Up (Memphis, TN / Ashewille, NC)
COUNTER INTUITS
U S E L E S S E AT E R S
The original lineup of Greg Cartwright’s Reigning Sound includes Greg Roberson, Jeremy Scott, and Alex Greene. For those who have followed the band’s musical trajectory, “this lineup was responsible for creating some of their most memorable songs, including ‘She Ain’t Pretty,’ ‘Time Bomb High School,’ and ‘Straight Shooter’.” - Memphis Magazine

F R I D A Y, S E P T E M B E R 3 0 MEMPHIS MADE AFTERNOON SHOW 3:00pm LSDOGS (New Orleans, LA)
With a 7” on Total Punk under their collar, this inbred puppy mill features members of Gary Wrong Group, Sick Thoughts, Black Abba, Buck Biloxi and the Fucks, and other Crescent City creeps. Turns out, all dogs don’t go to heaven.
KOOL 100S
3:45pm KOOL 100s (Kansas City, MO)
“a ripping and screaming jolt of proto-punk, rendered muddy by the thick waves of distortion and who knows what else—booze and drugs and, of course, smokes.” - Noisey
4:30pm Trampoline Team (New Orleans, LA)
We don’t agree with the band when they say they are “ungrateful pieces of garbage.” They are really nice! We do agree with Pelican Pow Wow, who released their debut LP ‘Make It Faster’ earlier this year, when they call it “snotty punk with tons of pop and charm.” Keep on the lookout for them backing another snotty punk this weekend!
TRAMPOLINE TEAM
5:15pm Pity (Toronto, Canada)
Lyrics discussing having separation anxiety from a leather jacket, as well as asking something as self reflective as “How can I be a betty ally” are proof that Pity are ready-toparty punks not afraid to ask the tough questions and drink beer doing it.

POWER
HI TONE NIGHT SHOW MC GREG LOWERY
Rip-Offs, Supercharger, Zodiac Killers, and now Control Freaks - this guy has been in some legendary Bay Area bands. His MC gig should be one for the books, too.
DJ Hoppe & DJ Neutral Flex (Memphis, TN)
Kalamazoo’s native Hoppe’s rare spins match with the Memphis Goth-drenched buddha of Cold War creation.
9:00pm Opposite Sex (Dunedin, NZ)
“Opposite Sex are the latest and greatest of Dunedin, NZ’s storied history of incredible underground bands. If your cup of tea is Teenage Jesus & The Jerks, pre-Sister era Sonic Youth or the unique improvisation of Alastair Galbraith, then you would be advised not to miss this raw, noisy and chaotic trio on their first visit to the USA, in support of their second LP ‘Hamlet’.” - Andrew Savage, Parquet Courts
9:45pm Aquarian Blood (Memphis, TN)
Take a crew of 6 (sometimes 7) Memphis degenerates of varying generations and have them play slightly hypnotic, synth-y tracks soaked in the brain-goo pouring out of the ears of an acid freak whose main ruminations are cults, the paranormal, and other obscurities and you will have the whirlwind, weirdo punk of Aquarian Blood. Debut album on Goner coming soon. FFO: Black light posters and Black Flag.
OPPOSITE SEX
11:15pm Buck Biloxi & the Fucks (New Orleans, LA) “It doesn’t take long to realize the caliber of Mr. Biloxi’s moxie, his lyrics will be quoted for the next ten generations, and his attitude towards human existence will be the material of graduate-level Sociology courses, mark my words, and this insight doesn’t come cheap.” - Victim of Time
12:00am The Blind Shake (Minneapolis, MN)
We just can’t quit them... their live show is too good! Back again and with a new LP out on Goner this Fall.
1:00am Black Lips (Atlanta, GA)
12 years in the making... the last time Black Lips played Gonerfest was the first time any band played Gonerfest. Our prodigal sons return for lucky #13!
10:30pm Power (Melbourne, Australia)
“...high voltage rock the way it was played 40 years ago... the three-piece delve into a murky and loud world where hard rock and boogie is mixed with punk, metal and psych.” - Tim Scott, Noisey B L AC K L I P S
6
INSIDE 1:30pm Casual Burn (New Orleans, LA)
It’s “good time sleazy driveway music” says the band. We’re not sure what that means, but we’re willing to let them kick off the Murphy’s day show on Saturday anyways! Crucial slot!
C A S UA L B U R N
BLOODBAGS
ARCHIE & THE BUNKERS
2:00pm Bloodbags (Auckland, NZ)
We knew New Zealand could get gnarly, but Andrew Tolley & Co. really make us believe Auckland may have a serious seedy underbelly. As explained by the band - “...guitar riffs, repetition, rhythmic propulsion and dynamic, seemingly well place hollering, play 20 times, see if said tune is still favoured at the end of the ritual, enough to keep on playing?”
3:00pm Archie & The Bunkers (Cleveland, OH)
Formed in 2013 by brothers Emmett and Cullen O’Connor, their influences range from jazz organ greats like Jimmy Smith, and Richard “Groove” Holmes, to punk icons Dead Boys, The Stooges, The Screamers, and more. Emmett plays exclusively cheap, vintage Japanese drum kits and is endorsed by splintered drumsticks. Cullen is endorsed by various organs and synths found on Craigslist.
4:00pm Zerodent (Perth, Australia)
ZERODENT
“...no bullshit punk rock with some power pop tunefulness, they way we like it! Bordering on no-wave and late 70s UK blue collar punk churlishness, they don’t get too angular and keep the melodies flowing in an early WIRE-like scrappy lo-fi style.” - Alien Snatch Records
5:00pm Bloody Show (Columbus, OH)
“They’ve got this gritty, plodding-but-driving feel to them reminiscent of Detroit-area bands from the early-to-mid2000s. They are kind of like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, but with much more raw urgency and much less production value. Score two for Columbus!” - Razorcake BLOODY SHOW
7
SATURDAY
MURPHY’S AFTERNOON SHOW
O UT S I DE 2:30pm Fire Retarded (Madison, WI)
Started in the summer of 2012, featuring members of Giant People, The New Years Gang, and The Hussy. Fire Retarded plays loud garage-punk.
OH BOLAND
3:30pm Iron Head (New Orleans, LA)
King Louie’s percussive contribution to Gonerfest 13, featuring Drew Owen on vocals/guitar and Jheri Macgillicuddy on bass.
4:30pm Oh Boland (Tuam, Ireland)
So Cow-approved noisy, jangle pop with a growing reputation for untamable live shows.
5:30pm The World (Oakland, CA)
THE WORLD
“The World’s a post-punk band, sure, but they’re also a dance group, a revolutionary art collective, sounds of the past catapulted to the future. Today your love, tomorrow The World. Join up.” - Grace Ambrose, MRR
6:30pm Spray Paint (Austin, TX)
They’ve been one of our favorite bands for awhile now, and 2016 brought, not one, but two (!) Spray Paint releases on Goner. We’re stoked to have them close out the Murphy’s day show. Spend a post-punk, post-apocalyptic, post-music sunset in Memphis with Spray Paint.

SATURDAY (NIGHT), OCTOBER HI TONE NIGHT SHOW MC Tom Scharpling (Woodbridge, NJ)
Host of The Best Show podcast and one-half of the “popular touring comedy troupe” Scharpling & Wurster.
DJ Tom Lax (Philadelphia, PA)
Founder of Siltbreeze Records, with releases by Dead C, Times New Viking, The Gibson Bros., Harry Pussy, and countless other bands who probably influenced half the bands at Gonerfest.
9:00pm Couteau Latex (Geneva, Switzerland)
Extremely moody, no-BS cold wave. Pensive and simple. That’s it. We love it. Their first single coming in the near future on Goner.
9:45pm Sick Thoughts (New Orleans, LA)
DD Owen may be off the market (sorry, ladies!) but that hasn’t stopped his crass performances from insulting people all over Europe and the US. And here’s your chance before he goes and settles down in the suburbs.
9
CONTROL FREAKS
BLOODSHOT BILL
10:30pm Bloodshot Bill (Montreal, Canada)
With the new LP Guitar Boy out on Norton and a 7” collaboration with Shannon Shaw (Shannon & the Clams) out on Slovenly, we’re in for all new kinds of hootin’ and hollerin’ from Canada’s longest running One Man Band.
11:15pm Control Freaks (San Francisco, CA)
Greg Lowery goes from MC to bass player in his first band in ten years! This band wants to put the swagger and fun back into music, which seems to be lacking today. Is it catchy? You’ll definitely catch something listening to this. Is it raw? Like eating fresh roadkill. Does it move you like a 7.0 shaker? Check, and mate...
ARCHIE & THE BUNKERS
1
MIDNITE SNAXXX
12:00am Midnite Snaxxx (San Francisco, CA)
“Actual Budget (Punk) Rock” b/w “All hits, No bullshit!” featuring members of The Bobbyteens, Trashwomen, & Loudmouths. Killer singles on Goner & Total Punk.
1:00am KID CONGO & THE PINK MONKEY BIRDS (Los Angeles, CA)
On his new album, Dracula Boots, the legendary Kid Congo Powers returns to the psychedelic jungle with a stripped down, no frills set of volcanic songs. Kid, the premier voodoo guitarist for seminal sexy swampy bands Gun Club, Nick Cave, and The Cramps, is a restless aesthete.

CLOSING CEREMONIES
At Cooper-Young Gazebo 3:30pm
REV. JOHN WILKINS (Memphis, TN)
Join us for our version of “church” in the Cooper-Young Gazebo for Rev. Wilkins’ second Closing Ceremony appearance. Growing up in Memphis, he absorbed the citified soulful sounds that were being pioneered by local musicians and recorded by legendary labels Sun, Stax, and Hi. He played guitar on O.V. Wright’s famous 1965 single “You’re Gonna Make Me Cry,” and in the early 80s, followed his father, famous bluesman Robert Wilkins, in call to ministry. In 2011, he released his first album, You Can’t Hurry God, on Oxford, MS label Big Legal Mess. It’s an honor to have him close out Gonerfest once again.

THINGS TO DO The Beaten Path... Sun
706 Union Ave. Need we say more? Ike Turner, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Roscoe Gordon, Howlin’ Wolf, that Elvis guy… the list of people that recorded in that room goes on and on!
Stax
926 E McLemore Ave. At our highest recommendation, Stax will undoubtedly blow you away. A groundbreaking label that brought white and black musicians together at a difficult time in American History, the influence of Stax runs deep: Otis Redding, Carla Thomas, Isaac Hayes, Wendy Rene, Johnnie Taylor, and Booker T and the MG’s…
S TA X
Graceland
3717 Elvis Presley Blvd. Though the mythos around Graceland is much larger than the estate itself, you can still feel the wild nights that happened in the jungle room, imagine him perusing the lawn in front of his house, and enjoy the notion that he rests eternally in his own backyard.
Gibson
145 Lt. George Lee Ave. Calling all Guitar Geeks and Gibson Enthusiasts! SG’s, Les Pauls, and other models are made here.
Metal Museum
374 Metal Museum Dr. Inside an old marine hospital on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi lies the country’s only museum dedicated to the fine art of decorative metalwork. The grounds are beautiful, the view of the river is unreal, and with a foundry/blacksmith shop open for view to the public, this is a perfect destination for any creative Goner to visit.

G R AC E L A N D
Rock and Soul Museum
191 Beale St. This museum offers the codified version of the history of Memphis music, thanks to the Smithsonian Institute. It also houses the first permanent Smithsonian exhibition outside of New York and Washington, D.C.
Brooks Museum of Art
1934 Poplar Ave. Located inside Overton Park is the city’s premier Art Museum. The Brooks features important contemporary as well as historical works.
IN MEMPHIS Mississippi River
Hard to catch a bad sunset on any stretch along the Mighty Mississippi. From the long, deeply southern sprawl at Harbor Town, to the new Beale Street Landing, and even further down to the Native American Ceremonial Mound across from the National Ornamental Metal Museum (a place mythically famed for being considered the most beautiful view of the Mississippi by one Mark Twain), each of these locations offers a pretty striking view of the reason Memphis exists. Just don’t take a dip.
Full Gospel Tabernacle Church
787 Hale Rd. This is where the reverend Al Green preaches, and if you can stomach rolling out of your hotel bed Sunday morning, this living legend won’t disappoint.
Jay Reatard’s Grave Memorial Park Cemetery
5668 Poplar Ave. Take the pilgrimage out east to visit someone very special to the Goner name. He’s right next to Isaac Hayes and across from the very unusual Crystal Shrine Grotto...a man-made crystal cave in the city.
Off The Beaten Path... Elmwood Cemetery
824 S. Dudley St. Were there spanish moss in the trees, you’d think you were a bit further south. Beautiful, decadent, and creepy.
Charlie Feathers’ Grave Forest Hill South
2545 East Holmes Rd. Out past the Airport is the final resting place of Charlie Feathers. He’s way out in the back, by the treeline.
Furry Lewis’ Grave Hollywood Cemetery
2012 Hernando Rd. In an abandoned Cemetery in South Memphis lies Walter Lewis, local legend and Blues icon. Hard to find and a bit scary, but worth every ounce of Southern Gothic this trip presents.
Summer Ave
A stretch of road replete with restaurants, thrift stores, antique shops, and more!
Ebbo Spiritual Supply
1331 Madison Ave. Candles, cards, herbs, and the like!
Al Town
Local DIY skate spot a mile from Goner. ASK A LOCAL.
Southland Greyhound Park
J AY R E A T A R D ’ S G R AV E
1550 Ingram Blvd., West Memphis, AR 72301 In the event your bender leads you to the outer limits of deviant living, cross the bridge into Arkansas and take a visit to the dogs. There’s a buffet, tons of slot machines, and Sammy Hagar’s restaurant. Gnarly.

NIGHTLIFE Midtown
Lamplighter/Zinnies
1702 Madison and 1688 Madison The lamplighter is a southern beer bar, frequented by local creative types, users, abusers, and losers since the 30’s... maybe longer. Great jukebox and cash only. Bring your own liquor? Killer. Across the small parking lot is Zinnies. Not a dive but nothing special, Zinnies has a popcorn machine and Golden Tee in the back room. Birthplace of the shandy bomb...just get one.
Murphy’s
1589 Madison Ave. Benny has allowed Goner to wreak havoc here for several years now...pay a visit to the shamrock on Madison before or after the Saturday day show.
DKDC/Beauty Shop
964 and 966 S. Cooper Around the corner from Goner are two killer bars for those wanting a little bit more than a bathroom with gnats and beer only. Killer cocktails, amazing food, and amazing staff. DKDC hosts killer DJ sets and great shows, while Beauty Shop holds down the fort for the best beauty-parlor-turned-restaurant in town. DKDC will be this year’s location for the Sunday Come-down, with a DJ and dark atmosphere to reflect on just how heinous you’ve been.
Slider Inn
2117 Peabody Best deck in Midtown? We think so. This is a no frills get drunk and/or grub up spot with killer food and great staff. The massive deck is perfect for early autumn nights and the music is usually A+.
PNH Cafe
1532 Madison Ave. Beer only dive walkways from Murphy’s…but huge. Have a large crew with you? Want to play pool? Care for a burger stuffed with capers and feta? Go here and get down.
17
Pumping Station
1382 Poplar Ave. Where the bathrooms are not gendered, but designated “Master” and “Slave”...slip into the Pump for a completely different night time vibe. It’s big, with two bars and lovely patio, complete with a tree house. If that bark could talk….
Alex’s Tavern
1445 Jackson Ave. One of Memphis only late-night spots, Alex’s doesn’t get poppin’ until 3AM. Two jukebox’s, shuffleboard, and amazing bar food. Get the Greek Burger. Awesome atmosphere.
Buccaneer Lounge
1368 Monroe Midtown’s classic pirate-themed dive bar featuring cheap drinks and local music.
Downtown Loflin Yard
7 West Carolina Ave. Dodge the young professionals and soak in an Austin-esque venue/bar/restaurant/compound located by the train tracks in Downtown Memphis. There’s a creek in the front and a massive field by the tracks in the back.
Absinthe Room
162 Beale St. If you do hit Beale Street, we suggest finding the Absinthe Room. Located on the second floor, the stairs leading up are black lit and the pool tables are streetside, providing for a great view of Beale. Was this an old hotel, or a brothel? Creaky wooden floors and dim lighting make this easily one of Beale Street’s chillest, realest bars.
Ernestine and Hazels
531 S. Main Street Right by the train station, this ex-brothel encapsulates Memphis perfectly. Beer only, great burgers, and 2 stories with multiple rooms to chill in….it is severely hard to find a more “Memphis” bar. Go there and feel cool as hell.
