125 YEARS OF GONZAGA FAMILIES 12-Month Calendar
September 2012 - August 2013
GREETINGS from Gonzaga’s Parent & Family Office! We’d like to welcome you to the Gonzaga family. To give you an idea of what family means to us, this calendar captures small vignettes of daily life around campus – students learning, at play, and sharing in the special moments that, collectively, make up the “Gonzaga Experience.” That experience will be even richer this year as we celebrate Gonzaga’s 125th Anniversary and the School of Law’s Centennial!
We have also marked many special events that are part of our 125th Anniversary celebration. You and your student are invited to join us for these great events, including Fall Family Weekend, October 19-21. You can find more information about the anniversary celebration and events – plus videos, photos and downloads you can use to show your Zag pride – at gonzaga.edu/125.
Our incredible students are what make this place so unique. They truly are the heart of the University community. We thank you for sharing them with us during this transformative time in their lives and are thrilled that they – and your family – are taking part in creating new traditions at Gonzaga.
Our office is committed to helping you navigate Gonzaga and our campus wherever you may be. We will keep in touch via the monthly @Gonzaga Parent eNewsletter, and through our office website: gonzaga.edu/parents. I invite you to contact us for any reason. We’re here for you!
This calendar is designed to help you stay connected to your student from afar. Inside you will find important dates, timely reminders, and tips that will help you communicate with your student and the University throughout the year. In keeping with our theme “125 Years of Gonzaga Families,” each month also features a current student and their family , along with a link to our online newsletter where you can learn what Gonzaga family means to them. We hope many of the feelings and experiences they share will sound familiar.

Show your student how… don’t do it for them. Instead of taking the lead, help your student in more subtle ways: Study the Gonzaga website, read the parent/family newsletter, be aware of the services available to guide your student from a distance, and teach your student to become self-reliant.
Encourage your student to go on a retreat, find a job, or join a club or organization on campus. gonzaga.edu/community

We live in an age of instant communication, but resist the urge to call, text, or e-mail on a daily basis. Let your student breathe a little. It’s OK to check in periodically though, to let them know you’re interested and available.
Students celebrate the financial support provided from the extended Gonzaga family of alumni, parents, friends and other benefactors during our annual donor appreciation event “Tomorrow Made Possible.” For 125 years, GU has been sustained by donor support and this event lets students recognize all those who have made their education possible. gonzaga.edu/tmp

Trust your student. A relationship built on trust, from both sides, will be the most beneficial for the entire family. Students are much more likely to be honest with parents who support and trust them and have built their relationship on common values.

As your student prepares to return to Gonzaga for a new year, be sure you are not trying to control his or her decisions or actions. Try to keep opinions to yourself and you will be better able to keep the lines of communication open.
Start planning for the new academic year. Visit the Office of Academic Advising and Assistance website at gonzaga.edu/ aaa to find the 2012-13 Academic Calendar, resources for parents, and more.
