Gonzaga University at-a-glance

What is“Gonzaga”? Gonzaga is named for the patron saint of youth, Aloysius Gonzaga, who died as a young man trying to save Romans from the plague in the 16th century. Gonzaga University is a Jesuit, Catholic, humanistic university founded in 1887. While basketball programs consistently draw headlines, so do our nationally recognized and accredited academic programs, our commitment to serving others, and our vibrant community-building approach to college life. “Cura personalis,” or care for each individual, is a guiding Jesuit ideal here.

Gonzaga Today UNIVERSITY CENTER Construction is under way on Gonzaga’s $60 million University Center, an environmentally- friendly facility that will bring together students, faculty, staff and the community, fostering collaboration and activities that support social, academic and spiritual growth.

GLOBAL ENGAGEMENT A Gonzaga education is infused with a deep understanding of global connections. Gonzaga sends 600 students to study abroad and welcomes 400 international students and visiting professors to campus annually. GU ranks #1 in alumni serving in the Peace Corps for schools our size.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Working in partnership with dozens of local and regional organizations, Gonzaga demonstrates the power of civic engagement. Through law clinics, mentoring programs for area youth, and other specialized service-learning initiatives, we help strengthen the Spokane community.

CAREER PLANNING Alumni connections, corporate excursions, career fairs, internships, mentorships, coaching and training, and networking dinners in major cities, help students explore, select and secure meaningful career opportunities.

UNIVERSITY MINISTRY Rooted in our Jesuit heritage of a faith that supports justice, University Ministry encourages the spiritual development of all students, empowering them to live out God’s love in the world, regardless of religious background.

BASKETBALL & INTERCOLLEGIATE SPORTS Gonzaga plays NCAA Division I sports, in the West Coast Conference. Men’s basketball, with 15 straight trips to the Big Dance, packs every home game in the McCarthey Athletic Center. Women’s basketball averages 5,600 fans per game. Men’s or women’s, they’re the hottest ticket in town.
