LETTER FROM THE INTERIM ACADEMIC VICE PRESIDENT
I am excited to share this third annual Faculty Achievements publication with you and hope that you are impressed, as I am, with the scholarly and creative work of my colleagues at Gonzaga University. Gonzaga faculty are teacher-scholars whose primary mission, teaching, is greatly enhanced by their participation in professional activities. Not only do these scholarly and creative activities help expose students to cutting-edge content and current disciplinary conversations, they also model the sort of engagement in the world that we hope students will, in turn, pursue. At institutions such as ours, this professional activity can take many forms. It manifests itself in the traditional scholarship of discovery, original research that advances knowledge and that is shared in peer-reviewed journals, at disciplinary conference, or through juried exhibitions and performances. What is distinctive about these activities at Jesuit, Catholic, liberal arts universities such as ours is how the work of these teacher-scholars directly results in increased student engagement. Faculty-led research and creative activity offer unique opportunities for students to do research and to apply their learning. Consonant with our heritage, and with specific reference to the Ignatian paradigm which is the hallmark of a Jesuit education, another distinctive feature is faculty leadership in the scholarship of teaching and learning. Faculty study best pedagogical practices and share them with a professional audience. Also consonant with our heritage, and taking seriously the responsibility to the communities in which they live, faculty engage in publicly active and community-engaged scholarship, of disseminating their work not only in professional journals but in venues that invite conversation with the general public about their findings. This publication demonstrates all of these features. At their core, Gonzaga faculty are innovative teachers, outstanding mentors to their students; they are also nationally recognized for their contributions to their disciplines. I hope that you will enjoy reading about their participation in regional, national, and international conversations and about how they make a difference through their research, creative activity, grant writing, consultancies, and leadership in professional organizations. All of this makes for a rich campus community. We are truly blessed. Sincerely,
ELISABETH MERMANN-JOZWIAK, PH.D. INTERIM ACADEMIC VICE PRESIDENT

ALWAYS FISHING FOR ANSWERS TIM McLAUGHLIN PROFESSOR, SPECIAL EDUCATION
You might find this guy trolling a mountain lake in his pontoon boat, vest and a ball cap, disguising this fisherman’s other great passion, teaching. In particular, he loves teaching college students to be persons for others, helping them to develop the best evidence-based instruction techniques to use with their future students when they leave Gonzaga. To nurture learning. McLaughlin knows a lot about getting through to learning-challenged students. He co-founded Gonzaga’s special education program 40 years ago. Always encouraging students to look for new and innovative ways to educate their students, teaching – and fishing – are still his passions.

PERCOLATING NEW INFORMATION CAITLIN BAGLEY ASSISTANT PROFESSOR/INSTRUCTION LIBRARIAN, FOLEY CENTER
It only figures that a librarian is always seeking new information, and delights in helping others to find the same. “Being with like-minded individuals, conversations over coffee have brought about some of my happiest moments,” Bagley says. “Faculty librarians usually don’t teach semester-long classes. Instead, we teach through research appointments and oneshot classes. I’ve been lucky to establish working relationships with a number of faculty across campus who allow me to embed in their classes, or to take time from their regular schedule, to teach them the research skills they need to apply to their specific fields. For example, I enjoyed working with Emily Clark’s Native American studies classes to learn how to digitize and publish historic photos from our Jesuit Oregon Province Archives collection, working alongside Province Archivist David Kingma.” Bagley believes lifelong learning is information literacy – the two go hand in hand – “and it’s beautiful that our mission embraces this so well.”

SPANNING THE GLOBE MIRJETA BEQIRI PROFESSOR, BUSINESS OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT
Her counsel is sought by academic colleagues and service organizations around the globe. She has found that teaching students in refugee camps as part of Jesuit Worldwide Learning is one of her greatest rewards. “It is a way to pay it forward for all that’s been given to me,” says Beqiri, whose purest joy is in teaching and mentoring students of all ages, abilities and vocations. International travel is a passion that intersects with Beqiri’s academic pursuits. Having lived and taught in multiple countries, she is a travel guru, able to pack at a moment’s notice, enjoy multiple cuisines enroute to a final destination, and teach or tour without regard to local time zones or even a change of wardrobe. One summer she even taught on three continents; in Europe, face-to-face; and in America and Africa, online.

A LOVING WORLD LI YANG DIRECTOR, ENGLISH LANGUAGE CENTER
For international students new to the United States, communicating is like having to do calculus with an abacus, and about as fast. But gradually your mind gets wired properly and the sock wrapped around your tongue finally gets out of the way, says Li Yang, director of Gonzaga’s English Language Center. “Here at the Center we are providing international students with the language and communication skills they need to take full advantage of the education, experiences and friendships here at GU.” Yang knows about learning a new language. She grew up in the northwest part of China. Language is best learned in a foreign country, where you’re not only exposed to the language, but to the culture, as well. By so doing, “many non-native speakers like me are exposed to the world and fall in love with it. I love watching fertile minds open and curiosity grow.”

SALUTE! BRIAN HIGGINSON ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, BIOMECHANICS
Before he decided to become a university professor, this human physiologist disarmed bombs in Desert Storm, serving all four military branches. He later became a biathlete (skiing and shooting), and helped a college professor improve performance of the U.S. Ice Skaters in the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. At Gonzaga, Higginson specializes in soldier performance and survivability through equipment improvement. In October, the Australian Department of Defense asked him to speak at its soldier performance conference in Melbourne, and subsequently was invited to work with special-forces teams in five countries and at two universities. “My passion for this area of research is fueled not only by my own previous experiences in the military, but also my desire to improve performance and survivability of my guys still in the field, as well as those that will follow, Higginson says. Few labs looking at these issues are run by professors with military experience.

REIMAGINING RELATIONSHIPS SHANNON DUNN ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, RELIGIOUS STUDIES
She loves former students – nurses, lawyers and others – coming back and telling her they never could have imagined the many ways their religious studies classes would influence their personal and professional lives. For Dunn, her best classroom experiences are marked by genuine dialogue, learning and increased capacity to imagine relationships in new ways. “I am trained in comparative Christian and Islamic ethics,” Dunn says. “My research examines the interaction of these ethical systems with each other and secular law. Since we are living in such a politicallycharged era with regard to certain forms of Islam and Christianity, I have opportunities to do research, challenge ideological claims masquerading as truth, and encourage a more thoughtful approach to the study of these topics.” The Jesuit ideal, cura personalis, or care for the whole person, “informs how I approach my work with students. I have learned that students are often more willing to ask difficult questions of themselves and others when they feel cared for and respected.”

WRITING HIS OWN TICKET SHANN RAY FERCH PROFESSOR, LEADERSHIP STUDIES
Ferch is as unpretentious as they come, and yet, a very complex man. He has jumped off 70-foot cliffs in Montana, flying like a crazy fool into deep blue water. But perhaps the most consoling thing in the world to him is holding his daughter’s hands. He still loves to play basketball, yet his passion focuses on the nature of forgiveness and how servant-leadership honors personal and collective responsibility, and self-transcendence across the disciplines. He savors the uncommon engagement of heart, mind and soul he receives from Gonzaga undergrad, graduate and Ph.D. students here. He is an award-winning author of a number of poems, short stories and fiction books, and his work regarding leadership, organizational culture, and forgiveness has appeared in scientific journals and other scholarly venues internationally.

BIT BY BIT DAVID SCHROEDER ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, ENGINEERING (COMPUTER SCIENCE)
Acting and engineering is a rather unusual blend of talent. But that high school theatrical experience helped Schroeder develop his teaching skills in front of an audience, “although my classes do have fewer musical numbers,” he jokes. What particularly inspires this computer scientist is the recognition that as precise as computers can be, their essence is in the human interaction. “My research interests are in data visualization, and in creating things that take into consideration how complicated and strange human senses are. This can be difficult for some students because they appreciate the rigid accuracy that computers offer, but I find it refreshing to be reminded that in the end, we are making things for humans,” he says. “I teach because it is what gives me the most joy in life. I love helping students through the process of first meeting a concept, struggling with it, and finally mastering it,” he says.

AN ACTIVE MIND, SPIRIT JASON GILLMER HEMMINGSON CHAIR IN CIVIL LIBERTIES AND PROFESSOR OF LAW DIRECTOR, CENTER FOR CIVIL AND HUMAN RIGHTS
Gillmer found himself three blocks from the explosion site after running the 2013 Boston Marathon. He was shaken emotionally. It was 2016 before he could bring himself to run it again. He loves attending Gonzaga basketball games, but as important, he loves the sense of community that comes with sharing a common cause. He’s been playing bass guitar since junior high, a passion that continues to occupy his free time. Oh, and he recently wrote a book 10 years in the making, “Slavery and Freedom in Texas: Stories from the Courtroom, 1821-1871.” Gillmer’s work at Gonzaga is every bit as engaging as his pastimes. He teaches and writes in the areas of Constitutional Law, Civil Rights, and Race and the Law. This past year, he also started the Center for Civil and Human Rights at Gonzaga Law. The Center builds on a century-long tradition at Gonzaga to educate the whole person to serve the public good. Made possible through the actions of a generous donor, the Center seeks to provide students, scholars and community leaders with opportunities to explore and address social justice issues through research, education and community engagement.
