Celebrating 125 years of Gonzaga’s community connections with Spokane

Zag Spirit!

Gonzaga students and alumni are a major workforce source throughout the community, from interns and research assistants to business managers, manufacturers, educators, health care specialists, social workers, law enforcement officers, attorneys, and many more.

Gonzaga’s first class

GU and Spokane: A 125-year partnership.

In 1881, Spokane city fathers asked Father Joseph Cataldo, S.J., Jesuit superior of the Rocky Mountain area, to “build up here a great university.” Fr. Cataldo combed Europe and the Eastern United States to find craftsmen, teachers, administrators and spiritual leaders to come out West and establish a school forged by adversity and blessed by God. Gonzaga College opened its doors Sept. 17, 1887 and the first class numbered 18. By 1900, enrollment had grown to 224 students. By 1917, some 5,000 Gonzaga alumni were serving critical roles in business, agriculture, education, science and transportation across the Northwest. Today, Gonzaga University and Spokane celebrate 125 years of partnership in this region. GU is a cornerstone of the Northwest, educating generations of faith-filled and ethical leaders whose actions reflect a commitment to service, justice and promotion of the common good.

Zag Spirit is a Spokane spirit. It’s a can-do attitude. At its foundation is community. Many know that women’s and men’s basketball battle annually for spots in the Sweet 16. But did you know that Gonzaga’s debate team finished among the nation’s Final Four in last year’s National Debate Tournament?

• Strong athletic presence has impacted enrollment and Spokane’s national notoriety

• $200 million annually spent on goods and services in the community, in addition to the funds spent by students and more than 15,000 visitors

• Zag men’s basketball team played in the last 14 NCAA tournaments

• Law students provide copyright and patent counsel to developing enterprises at Innovate Washington (formerly Sirti)

• In line with the burgeoning health science enterprise in the U-District, Gonzaga will launch its Doctor of Nursing Practice degree program in spring 2013

• Faculty and staff volunteer in more than 400 local organizations, ranging from churches and charities, to arts, schools and economic development organizations
