President’s Message

The 2015-16 academic year made history in many ways. Reflecting on all the achievements of Gonzaga is inspiring and motivating, not to mention simply amazing. The “Gonzaga Will” to expand and enrich our interdisciplinary teaching opportunities and to modernize our learning environments was more than a well-developed plan: It was a series of actions that continued to the mission of our beloved university. Here are a few ways we saw “Our Will in Action” this year: • We commenced the partnership with University of Washington School of Medicine to expand medical education in Spokane – a historic and strategic move not only for the two universities, but for the entire Inland Northwest. • We launched our largest capital campaign, with the most significant part of fundraising focused on building our endowment to help more students access an exemplary Catholic, Jesuit college education. • Miss Myrtle Woldson bestowed on Gonzaga the largest gift our institution has ever received (aside from the ongoing support of the Society of Jesus). Her estate, valued at $55 million, was also the second largest individual gift to a university in Washington state history. • Campus planners initiated development of four new facilities: a new Jesuit Residence, the Volkar Center for Athletic Achievement, Myrtle Woldson Performing Arts Center and the Integrated Science and Engineering building. • Academic leaders proudly introduced a revised core curriculum this year, focused on broadening courses in the humanities and ensuring that our students are prepared for an increasingly global environment. I think you’ll agree that these five examples alone are substantial and reflect the incredible hard work and commitment of our faculty, staff, students, parents, alumni, benefactors and friends to continue developing Gonzaga University as a premier institution. But there were plenty of purely fun moments of 2015-16 as well. We watched the new John J. Hemmingson Center become the hub of student activity and livelihood as it embarked on its first year of operation. HBO TV crews followed our men’s basketball team on the

road to the West Coast Conference Championship and provided fans around the world with inside views of Mark Few’s coaching and teamwork. The Zags took us to the Sweet Sixteen again – an event that brings worldwide attention to Gonzaga and presents us with the opportunity to display our accomplishments off the court as well. And, continuing the success of our Presidential Speaker Series, Gonzaga welcomed Her Excellency Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Liberia’s Head of State. All of these successes propel us forward to embrace new opportunities in 2016-17. Chief among those will be concentrated efforts to address racial, ethnic and cultural diversity, equity and inclusion, with respect to national issues around justice for all. We’re examining our investments in light of supporting ecological sustainability. We’re engaging our faculty more in dialogue surrounding the future of higher education and how we work to keep Gonzaga viable and relevant. In the midst of those priorities, we’ll continue efforts in our capital campaign. We recently broke ground on three of the four facilities mentioned above – a visible indicator of the momentum we have to continue the exciting work that took place last year. I couldn’t be more excited about what lies ahead. I picture dance, music and theater students enjoying a modern facility in which to practice and showcase their artistic abilities. I envision more Jesuits coming to Spokane because they see us offering great spaces for their studies, retreats and growth. I’m eager to see the expansion of science and engineering opportunities. And I – along with partners across the state – am energized by the endless possibilities of having medical students on our campus. These are really just the beginning steps to an incredibly exciting future. I hope you’ll continue to walk with us on the journey. Sincerely,

Revised University Core adopted Under the direction of Molly Kretchmar-Hendricks, the University adopted a revised Core Curriculum following many months of research and reflection by a cadre of faculty members and administrative leaders. At the center of the revised Core is this question: As students of a Catholic, Jesuit and Humanistic university, how do we educate ourselves to become men and women for a more just and humane global community? Among the first-year successes were the two course design institutes, involving more than 30 faculty members. There was also the rollout of the new First-Year Seminar, in which students focused on a single subject through the lens of many disciplines, and learned to make the intellectual shift to university academic life. There were seven options this year, including a popular seminar on coffee, led by Stacy Taninchev, associate professor, political science.

Student Achievements Teams and Individuals No “I” in Team Debate: National Championship Qualifiers Juniors Jenna Bauer and Dillon Johnson represented Gonzaga in the National Debate Tournament, marking the 21st time in the last 22 years that a Gonzaga team has qualified. Comprehensive Leadership: Hot Topics Students in the Comprehensive Leadership Program have presented at several meetings of the National Communication Association: one group discussed Organizational Contexts of Campus Sexual Assault; another presented, “What’s Democracy got to do with it?” Global Prize Comprehensive Leadership Program (CLP) students captured first place in the annual International Leadership Association Student Case Competition in Barcelona, Spain. Engineering Team: Vitruvius Award A team of Engineering students won the Vitruvius Award at the USA Science & Engineering Festival for developing an approach to home construction near wilderness areas to better protect homes from fires. Gonzaga was among three dozen universities to receive funds from the Environmental Protection Agency’s People, Planet and Prosperity Program with an opportunity to display at the festival in Washington, D.C. Ethics Bowl: Fourth Place A team of Gonzaga students placed fourth in the third annual Ethics Bowl, sponsored by the Independent Colleges of Washington, at the University of

Puget Sound. Teams from the state’s 10 private colleges and universities competed in the event. Theatre, Dance: 5 Awards Fourteen Gonzaga theatre and dance students competed at the American College Theatre Festival and brought home awards for scenic design, “tech Olympics,” musical theatre and stage directing and choreography.

Individual Drive Doctoral leadership students are publishing, presenting and filling prestigious roles in many ways. Among them are Joy York, who published an article in Business and Professional Communication Quarterly; and Felix Yerace, a panelist on educational technology at the National Association of Secondary School Principals meeting. Nate Disser (’17) Summer Research Fellow A human physiology major, Nate was one of two dozen students nationwide chosen to take part in a paid 10-week Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowship from the American Physiological Society. A sufferer of chronic pain himself, Nate chose to address the basic mechanisms involved in tendon growth and repair. Cole Fiscus (’16) Volunteer of the Year Cole was a mentor and leader for multiple initiatives through the Center for Community Action and Service Learning. Because of his care and compassion for youth, he received Gonzaga’s Sister Virginia Claire Carvey Volunteer of the Year Award. Sister Virginia Claire was a schoolteacher in the 1960s who established services for children with special needs.

Miranda Heckman (’16) Spokane River Teacher Miranda blended her three academic loves, biology, dance and education, in a self-directed production that taught Spokane elementary schoolchildren about the ecology of the Spokane River. Madison Rose (’18) Newman Civic Fellow Madison was named a Campus Compact 2016 Newman Civic Fellow for her work as a coordinator for the Eye to Eye mentoring program and her initiative to host a Share Your Story event to raise awareness for students with learning disabilities. Joe Wilson (’16) Creating Better Braille When this electrical engineering major noticed that access to academic materials was limited for sight-impaired students, he set out to build a more convenient solution than the lengthy books with standard braille. Now a capstone project in Gonzaga’s Center for Engineering Design & Entrepreneurship and the KEEN Foundation, Joe’s team will create a manageable tablet-style electronic device that can display a full page of refreshable braille – like an iPad with a tactile screen. Students also will create a business plan, research marketing strategies and plan product promotion.

Gonzaga partners with UW to expand medical education to Spokane The 2015-16 academic year was foundational to a new partnership between Gonzaga University and the University of Washington School of Medicine (UWSOM). In February, the two schools announced the establishment of a regional health partnership to continue, enhance and expand medical education and research in Spokane with a shared goal to foster community and economic vitality in Eastern Washington. With Gonzaga involved, 50 of the 60 first-year medical students listed Spokane as their first choice to begin their medical training — the highest percentage of students to do so in the history of the WWAMI (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho) program, a multistate medical education program operated by UW for more than 45 years. The increase in the Spokane class size from 40 to 60 entering students is a result of new funding last year from the Washington state Legislature to the UWSOM. Additionally, 40 UWSOM second-year medical students – the first class to experience the school’s nationally recognized new medical school curriculum – will continue their education on GU’s campus. Along with these 100 students experiencing innovative classroom training, hundreds more UWSOM medical students complete third- and fourth-year clinical training in physicians’ practices throughout eastern Washington.

“This is a significant milestone in our commitment to educate the next generation of health professionals,” said Ana Mari Cauce, president of UW. “The growth in our Spokane class is a testament to our new partnership with Gonzaga, the excellence of our UW School of Medicine faculty and incredible support from the state and the Spokane medical community.” Welcoming UW medical students to the Gonzaga campus in fall 2016 was a historic moment that will impact the University – and the Spokane community – for years to come.

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf President of Liberia Africa’s first democratically elected female head of state and winner of the 2011 Nobel Prize for Peace, Sirleaf became the first sitting president of a foreign nation to speak at Gonzaga in the University’s history. She spoke about the hope she has for the future of Liberian women, and how she led her country during and after the Ebola epidemic.

Gonzaga Will: The Campaign for Our Future At the launch of its Capital Campaign in October 2015, the University had already raised $183 million toward its $250 million goal. That achievement was thanks not only to Miss Myrtle Woldson, whose $55 million estate gift was the largest in Gonzaga’s history, but the generous donations from more than 23,000 other supporters. Those loyal friends – and many more who have joined the effort since the launch – believe that Zags use their gifts to shape the world for the better and that a relevant Jesuit education is vital to meet the needs of communities around the globe. Together, our supporters are paving the way toward our institution’s future in five key areas:

Woldson gift supports high-need scholarships and performing arts In October, Gonzaga launched its Capital Campaign, revealing its largest gift ever: the estate of Miss Myrtle Woldson, valued at $55 million. An accomplished businesswoman, musician and philanthropist, Miss Woldson chose Gonzaga as the beneficiary of her generosity, with student scholarships and a performing arts center in mind. She died in 2014 at the age of 104. “Miss Woldson decided that Gonzaga was worthy of her trust, because of who we are and where – with her support – we could go. She saw Gonzaga as something to believe in; an endeavor worthy of her support,” President McCulloh told the crowd gathered to learn about the University’s vision for the future. Miss Woldson’s gift is the second-largest from an individual to a college or university in Washington state history (according to data from the Chronicle of Philanthropy) and will create the largest scholarship fund for students with high financial need in Gonzaga’s history. Miss Woldson’s scholarship fund will bolster the University’s endowment – helping to graduate students with less debt and making Gonzaga less dependent on tuition revenue. A skilled musician, Miss Woldson’s love of the arts is reflected in her bequest for the Myrtle Woldson Performing Arts Center. Miss Woldson’s generosity can be seen in other establishments in the Spokane community. The Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox and the Edwidge Woldson Park on Spokane’s South Hill honor her parents. Far more frequently, her philanthropy was discreet, and included Catholic Charities Spokane as well as well as the Spokane Symphony and regional museums.

Logan Neighborhood Block Party The first Logan Neighborhood Block Party brought together people who live, work, learn and worship in Logan to develop a neighborhood connection that encourages engagement and mutual support. Students also participated in a neighborhood cleanup effort to show GUâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s commitment to Logan.

Young Child Expo & Conference Gonzaga served as the West Coast host institution of one of the most respected and popular conferences focusing on educational and health issues for children newborn to age 6. The forum brought together nearly 500 early childhood leaders professionals, medical professionals, elected officials, policy-makers and parents to learn about the latest services and resources available to help all young children reach their full potential. During the conference, Gonzaga honored Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., with the universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first Excellence in Early Childhood Award for her lifetime of advocating for young children and their families.

Bloomsday Connect Two engineering senior capstone teams developed a new app and a wearable device to provide Bloomsday participants with real-time race data. Their goal was 600 downloads; they had 1,800.

Across the State Dance Marathon for Children’s Miracle Network

Hillyard Youth Collaborative The Jesuit Association of Student Personnel Administrators awarded Gonzaga the Ignatian Medal for Outstanding Academic Partnership for its work on the Hillyard Youth Collaborative in northeast Spokane. The Ignatian Medal annually recognizes a program or initiative that demonstrates collaboration between academic and student affairs to support student success and learning. The Hillyard Youth Collaborative promotes the success of youth in the northeast neighborhoods of Spokane with a focus on identification of at-risk students, the design and delivery of interventions for students, and evaluation of those interventions.

Gonzaga Law was recognized for its participation in the Washington Moderate Means Program, in which law students help middle-income families achieve better access to justice. Also of note from the Law School are two alumni serving as back-to-back presidents of the Washington State Bar Association: Bill Hyslop (’80 J.D.) and Robin Haynes (’00, ’02 M.A., ’06 J.D.). The School of Professional Studies hosted its first Women in Leadership Conference in Seattle. U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell, researcher Heidi Hanna and sociologist JoAnne Wehner led conversations on navigating gender-related leadership challenges.

84 Martin Luther King Jr. Service Day On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Gonzaga students volunteered in northeast Spokane, working like many others to transform the federal holiday into a day of citizen action. Students served at the Northtown Boys & Girls Clubs, The Salvation Army, and the Mission Community Outreach Center. “Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and work challenge us to act for a widespread and deeply rooted justice that extends to all people. Celebrating his legacy by supporting local organizations involved in that work is a wonderful way to spend this day,” said Hannah Klaassen, coordinator, Center for Community Action and Service-Learning (CCASL)

IRS-certified Zags contributed more than 971 hours of volunteer service to help 981 individuals file their taxes. Gonzaga accounting students partnered with the IRS and United Way of Spokane County to help generate more than $1 million in refunds for low- and middle-income Spokane residents through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.

Faculty Achievements

Noteworthy Mentions Vincent Alfonso Participant in a World Congress in Rome Dean of the School of Education, Alfonso attended the World Congress on Catholic Education and enjoyed a session with Pope Francis. The School of Education is collaborating with the School of Business Administration to support the Diocese of Spokane and its Catholic schools, as part of a vision for creating a Center for Catholic Education to place Gonzaga at the forefront of Catholic education initiatives. Kenneth Anderson Named Dean of School of Business Administration Now in his 30th year at Gonzaga, Anderson is dean of the School of Business Administration, having served as associate dean from 2008 to 2013. Julie Beckstead STEM Teaching Honor Insight Into Diversity magazine selected Julie Beckstead, professor of biology and environmental studies, as one of “100 Inspiring Women in STEM” for her work encouraging a new generation of young women to consider careers in science, technology, engineering and math. John Caputo was a Visiting Research Scholar in the Department of Communication and Social Research at Sapienza University in Rome. He is a professor in the Communications and Leadership Studies program. Vesta Coufal Math Teaching Award The Pacific Northwest Region of the Mathematical Association of America presented Vesta Coufal, associate professor of mathematics, with its 2016 Award for Distinguished College or University Mathematics Teaching. Lynn Daggett professor of Law, along with attorney Tanya Barton (J.D. ’14), presented McCleary: An Update on Washington’s School Funding Litigation, relating to the Washington State Supreme Court’s decision to hold the Legislature in contempt for failing to fund education as the high court had previously ordered. Todd Finkle and Kevin Henrickson Centioli Faculty Scholars Award Two faculty members in the School of Business Administration were recognized for professional publication work and their activity in program development.

Inga Laurent, associate professor of Law, received a Fulbright Scholarship to teach and research in Jamaica for 10 months. She intends to look at the country’s deeply rooted support of retributive justice models and examine the new more restorative practices of justice in place. Tod Marshall New State Poet Laureate English Professor Tod Marshall, an award-winning poet, was appointed the fourth Washington State Poet Laureate by Gov. Jay Inslee. In his two-year term, he will work to build awareness and appreciation of poetry – including the state’s legacy of poetry – through public readings, workshops, lectures and presentations in communities statewide. Marshall directs the Gonzaga English department’s writing concentration and the Gonzaga Visiting Writers Series, which offers dynamic encounters with accomplished writers. Fernando Ortiz Book of the Year The Association of Catholic Publishers named “To Be One in Christ: Intercultural Formation and Ministry,” Liturgical Press, edited by Ortiz (director of counseling), and Father Gerard J. McGlone, S.J., its 2016 Book of the Year. Charles Pepiton A Debut in Cannes “Laura, or Scenes from a Common World,” a film directed by Pepiton, assistant professor of acting and directing, was selected for the Art Video International Film Festival (AVIFF) in Cannes, France. Other Gonzaga collaborators were Leslie Stamoolis, Gonzaga assistant professor of costume design; Benjamin Semple, GU professor of modern languages; and modern languages Lecturer Marina Drake. Lisa Silvestri Publishes book on soldiers and social media Assistant professor of communication studies, Silvestri published “Friended at the Front: Social Media in the American War Zone,” which explores how Facebook and YouTube have transformed soldiers’ experiences at the frontlines of war. She has become a national media resource for coverage on this topic. Timothy Westerhaus International Conductor Exchange The American Choral Directors Association’s International Conductors Exchange Program selected Timothy Westerhaus, director of choirs and vocal studies, as a 2016 Conducting Fellow. Westerhaus was one of only seven conductors chosen to represent the United States in South Korea.

First cohort of students begins Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia program Gonzaga University’s School of Nursing and Human Physiology greeted the first class of new students in the Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice, the only one of its kind in the West and one of only 45 accredited programs nationwide.

Doctor of Nursing Practice program receives accreditation The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education has granted initial accreditation to Gonzaga University’s Doctor of Nursing Practice Program for five years – the longest possible term for a new program. The goal is to create new research-based improvements that will become available to practicing nurses. In addition, the program aims to create better overall care for patients by offering education at the same level for nurse practitioners, pharmacists, physicians and physical therapists.

ENGINEERING: PERMEABLE PAVEMENT

PHYSICS: THE PRIMORDIAL HELIUM ABUNDANCE

Sue Niezgoda & Mark Muszynski Associate Professors, Civil Engineering; Aimee Navikis-Brash, Adjunct Professor, Mechanical Engineering

Erik Aver, Assistant Professor, Physics Primordial helium abundance provides a unique window into the physics of the universe. Aver’s work uses astronomical observations of dwarf galaxies to experimentally determine the primordial helium abundance and compare with the prediction based on physics theory. “My collaborators and I have analyzed infrared light from a galaxy to greatly improve our knowledge about the density of the gas within. As a result, we were able to reduce the uncertainty in our calculations by over 50 percent, greatly advancing our ability to meaningfully test the prediction based on our understanding of the physics of the early universe.” PSYCHOLOGY: CULTURE MATCH

Vinai Norasakkunkit, Associate Professor, Psychology A series of experiments the research team conducted in the United States and Japan show that individuals whose motivational styles and values deviate from those that are predominant in their societies are more likely to be marginalized in their societies as precarious workers or even social isolates. The study has important implications for policies and early intervention strategies that can minimize the risk of becoming chronically marginalized in one’s own society. BIOLOGY: BACTERIOPHAGE

Kirk Anders, Professor, & Marianne Poxleitner, Associate Professor, Biology Bacteriophage references a group of viruses that infect specific bacteria, usually causing their disintegration or dissolution. Professors Anders and Poxleitner are the key faculty guiding students who start out by isolating a bacteriophage from a soil sample. Over the course of the semester they characterize their bacteriophage, perform DNA analysis, name their phage, and submit data to a national database to make it available to other scientists who study bacteriophage in order to address concerns around antibiotic resistance.

Permeable pavements treat stormwater that falls directly on the surface of pavement. To prove that permeable pavement is successful, the team designed two separate monitoring systems: one to analyze the durability of the pavement, and another to collect information on the water quality and quantity treated by the pavement. This process has important benefits including stormwater treatment and decreasing water runoff on specific roadways. Rhonda Young, Associate Professor, Engineering Self-driving vehicles collect all kinds of data to navigate the roadway, and the U.S. Department of Transportation is looking at ways to collect and share that meta-data between/ among vehicles through roadside collection and analysis. The first self-driving cars will start transmitting data by 2018, and within a few years, the U.S. DOT will need to have connected vehicle communications protocols in place. Young is among the engineers working to determine how to do this effectively. HISTORY: GYPSIES AND ROMA: PERCEPTIONS AND REALITIES IN AMERICAN CULTURE AND HISTORY

Ann Ostendorf, Associate Professor, History This project explores the relationship between the Roma in the earliest colonies and the United States, the stereotype of the Gypsy, and the early American project of nation building. Ostendorf’s work will describe and contextualize the origins and power of the myths about Gypsies, “many of which still hold overwhelming power in their perception as truth” among the majority American populations, she says.

Getting their feet wet Along the Little Spokane River, a group of engineering students in a senior technical elective, Stream Restoration, measured water quality and flow, and examined the stream banks and sediment suspended in the water. The class was taught by Sue Niezgoda, whose teaching philosophy is to engage and educate using a collaborative “learn-by-doing” approach. The land itself was a gift to Gonzaga from a generous benefactor.

Students intern at Swedish Medical Center Nine students participated in clinical research projects and received mentoring from medical professionals through the Seattle Summer Biomedical Internship program, the dream child of Dr. Terry Mayberg (’79), a neuroanesthesiologist and a former associate professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine. She is the founder and director of the internship program with her husband Dr. Marc Mayberg, a neurosurgeon and co-founder of the Swedish Neuroscience Institute.

Francis Youth Institute engages high schoolers A $294,415 grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. established a theology institute for high school students, called the Francis Youth Institute. The grant is part of Lilly Endowment’s High School Youth Theology Institute’s initiative, which encourages young people to explore theological traditions, ask questions about the moral dimensions of contemporary issues and examine how their faith calls them to lives of service. Gonzaga is one of 82 schools participating in the initiative. Gonzaga’s first Institute, co-directed by Gonzaga religious studies faculty Joe Mudd and Anastasia Wendlinder, included more than 20 students entering the 11th and 12th grades. It was grounded in Pope Francis’ encyclical, “Laudato Si: On the Care of Our Common Home.”

Simplicity, spirituality, community and justice Every year, Mission:Possible projects provide students with opportunities to serve in new ways and new venues across the nation. Craveses receive Ignatian Spirit Award Gonzaga University honored Gerri Craves and her late husband, Bob, with its Ignatian Spirit Award at the ninth annual Ignatian Gala. The University confers the award each year on benefactors who have given generously of their time, talent and resources to advance Gonzaga. Gerri has served as a trustee for 15 years, and with Bob Craves, founded the College Success Foundation to help underprivileged students achieve a college education. John J. Hemmingson Center is game changer for campus life, earns “green” honors Gonzaga University’s transformative new John J. Hemmingson Center quickly became the center of campus activities when it opened in August, just in time for the start of the academic year. The 167,726-square-foot facility, located in the heart of Gonzaga’s campus, brings the community together, blending the core elements of the Gonzaga experience – academics, student development, faith and global impact – in a facility designed for connectivity. Shortly after opening, Gonzaga learned the facility had received the prestigious Gold certification from the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system. The LEED rating system was designed by the U.S. Green Building Council to support development of more

sustainable buildings with energy efficiency and minimal environmental impacts. “The Hemmingson Center embodies our vision of a modern sustainable building that reflects Gonzaga’s commitment to the environment and serves as a transformational facility to foster students’ learning, reflection, engagement and growth,” President McCulloh said. It features an environmentally sensitive design that includes geothermal heating and cooling, a hydroponic greenhouse for fresh produce, and an apiary serving as an educational tool for the campus community. It is Gonzaga’s second building to receive the Gold LEED certification, following the PACCAR Center for Applied Science.

A gritty Sweet Sixteen as HBO-TV follows the Zags The men’s basketball team delivered one of the most fascinating seasons in program history in 2015-16, beginning with games in Japan and the Bahamas, and full intentions of taking Gonzaga back to the West Coast Conference Championship for its 18th year. Early into the season, Zags coaches receive an unprecedented request: to have the team’s games, classroom experiences and social and family activities filmed for national viewing. HBO Sports teamed up with IMG’s Original Content unit for an unscripted five-episode series called “Gonzaga: The March to Madness.” The HBO series chronicled the hard work and high expectations gameby-game with behind-the-scenes footage, offering a unique look at the program’s personalities that reveals how a small university, often labeled a “Cinderella Story” out of Spokane, Washington, has achieved success against the odds. “Every March, Gonzaga rallies the global basketball community around them,” notes Mark Shapiro, chief content officer, WME | IMG. “The Zags are a team with incredible leadership, dedicated players and a history like no other. Having spent months documenting their journey, we could not be more excited to share this unique, all-access story in partnership with HBO.”

Fifty Masterworks from the Print Collection In celebration of its 20th anniversary, the Jundt Art Museum staged an exhibition featuring 50 significant works on paper by 50 noteworthy artists. Lithographs, screenprints, engravings, etchings and other prints came from Gonzaga’s permanent collection, which includes more than 4,500 pieces. Other exhibitions included the outdoor display of sculptures by David Hayes; a presentation of the works of Fr. Andrew William Vachon, S.J., as part of the Jesuits & the Arts series, and the annual student art exhibition.

“Weaving Our Sisters’ Voices” Gonzaga professors from religious studies, music and theatre studies collaborated to bring the ancient stories of women from Scripture to the stage with a modern perspective in an original Gonzaga play.

The museum published its second and third books: “Vivid in My Mind: The Visionary and Landscape Images of Father Andrew William Vachon, S.J.,” and “Fifty Masterworks from the Print Collection of the Jundt Art Museum,” for which the museum was awarded its first-ever state grant from ArtsWA.

Music The Northwestern Division of the American Choral Directors Association selected the Gonzaga University Concert Choir and Timothy Westerhaus, conductor, to perform in the “Music in Worship” portion of its conference. The choir performed Arvo Pärt’s “Berlin Mass,” composed after the fall of the Berlin Wall, to celebrate the fall of walls that divide humanity. Other performances this year included: • GU Women’s Chorus: “Magnificat!” with special guest Incendo Music Ensemble

‘Dido & Aeneas’ In a collaboration among music, theatre and dance faculty and students, Gonzaga presented Henry Purcell’s English baroque dance opera “Dido & Aeneas,” a dramatization of the story of the tragic romance between Dido, queen of ancient Carthage, and Aeneas, hero of ancient Rome.

Writing The 2015-2016 Gonzaga University Visiting Writers Series, an event organized by Washington State Poet Laureate Tod Marshall and additional Gonzaga faculty, featured writers such as Kimberly Meyer, Manuel Gonzales, Robyn Schiff and Meagan Ciesla, and the winners of the Michael and Gail Gurian Award. This year’s series was presented in partnership with Gonzaga’s English, religious studies and environmental studies departments, as well as Gonzaga’s Unity Multicultural Education Center, Spokane Falls Community College and The Davenport Hotel.
