StudentsareatthecoreofGonzaga,butourcommunityfunctionswellbecauseoftheworkof ourfacultyandstaff.Ouremployeesaretheonesthatanimatethecampusexperience.Weshape ourstudentsbyupliftingoneanotherandfullylivingoutourmissionandJesuitvaluesandfind ourselveschangedforthebetter.Wearethefacilitatorsresponsibleforaidingourstudentsin reachingtheirpost-graduationdestinations.Thisiswhyemployeesaretheheartofourworkin HumanResources.Weprideourselvesonmaneuveringthedelicatebalancebetweencura personalisandcuraapostolica–supportingouremployeesinthewaysthatbestpositionthemfor successandshowourgenuinecare,whilemakingdecisionsthatpositiontheuniversityfor sustainabilityfarbeyondourtenures.

Overthepastyear,ourteamshavebalancedtheseresponsibilitiesthroughallphasesofthe employeelifecycle Fromwalkingalongsidenewcolleaguesaswewarmlywelcomethemtothe Zagcommunity,supportingemployeesandsupervisorsthroughprofessionaldevelopment opportunities,implementinginnovativechangesthatimproveourtotalrewardspackages,and wishingdepartingemployeescareandfulfillmentastheypursuetheirnextventures,weendeavor tomodelwhatittrulymeanstobecommittedtothedignityofthehumanpersonandatrusted partner.Inthefaceofexternalforcesshapingoureconomyandthestateofhighereducation,one thingremainsconstant:HRcontinuestoadvocateforouremployeesandembracethechanges necessarytoimproveourprofessionalexperiencesandsupportourstrategicobjectiveof positioningGonzagafordistinction.

Acrosstheacademicyear,wehaverestructuredtheHRteamandwelcomednewteammembers; expandedpartnershipsacrosscampus;madeprogressonnecessarypolicyandprocess improvements;revampedthesupportsweofferthroughprofessionaldevelopment,onboarding, andperformancemanagement;andmovedforwardwithrefiningGonzaga’stotalrewards philosophy,whichhasincludedtheimplementationofretirementenhancements,distributionof totalrewardstatements,andongoingworkonthenewstaffcareerframework.Throughoutthis work,weareremindedofthebroadscopeofourimpactandtheimportanceofbeingpartners thatareregardedbythecommunityasengaged,mindful,andservantfocused.Iamproudofthe feedbackwecontinuetoreceiveonthecommunity’swillingnesstoinviteourteamsintodifficult conversationsandexcitingopportunities;thus,betterpositioningustosupporttheStrategicPlan andcreatingafulfilling,inclusiveculture.

Our HR team is made up of dedicated individuals who are committed to aligning talent with purpose and creating an inclusive and positive work environment. StrategicInitiatives&Opportunities

Initiating Process Improvements & Structure

This year, one of our major initiatives was to evaluate our systems to streamline operations, enhance efficiencies, and elevate employee experiences. The focus of this work has been reviewing the current structure of job posting and position management in PeopleAdmin.

Withinthepositionapprovalprocess,theEmployment, ColleagueRelations,andHRDataandSystemsteams collaboratedtodecreasethetimetakentopostaposition inPeopleAdminfrom25daysto14days.Posting positionsmoreexpedientlyenablesquickerhires,better teamsupport,andimprovesthehiringandonboarding process.

Thisinitiativecontinuedintoanimprovedvolunteer onboardingprocess InpartnershipwithITS,amore streamlinedandefficientprocessforonboardingand managingvolunteerswascreatedthatcollectsall necessaryinformationandapprovalsinonesystemand eliminatestheuseofpaperforms!

Our learning offerings and resources are designed to inform and empower employees with the skills and knowledge essential for success and development Below are the facts and figures from our sessions in the ‘23-’24 academic year:

The 2023 Benefits Fair

For the Fall 2023 Essentials for Supervision (ESS) sessions, 80% of evaluation respondents reported that because of the ESS session, they feel valued as a supervisor at Gonzaga and 78% feel more confident in understanding what their supervisor role is.

EmployeeWellnessInitiatives

HRpartneredwiththeRudolfFitnessCentertoofferstaffandfaculty fitnessclassesinyoga,wateraerobics,andspin/TRX!Theofferingswere createdforemployeestoengagewiththefitnesscenterandbuild communityaroundengagingfitnessclasses.In2023,107participants joinedtheprogram.Ifyouareinterested,registerforthe2024fitness classes!

In2023,wealsosaw198GUemployeescompletetheirZagFitWellness incentive!Thankyoutoallemployeeswhoparticipated.Formore informationonZagFitWellness,viewthebenefitsportal.

The Benefits Fair serves as the primary opportunity for employees to learn more about their benefits and provides opportunity for engagement with various vendors and campus partners’ offerings We welcomed 618 attendees over the two-day event, 123 webinar/seminar participants, and 331 participants completed a Biometric Screening. We want to thank everyone who attended last year’s fair and helped make the event a great success!

Community

In2023,theEmploymentteamonboarded378new employees.Theirworksupportedareasacrossthe universityinbringingnewtalent,newperspectives,and increasedsupporttotheuniversity.

ConsistentwithGonzaga’smissiontodevelopthewholepersonfortodayandtomorrow,inJanuary2024, welaunchedthenewGonzagaTargetDateSeriesretirementplan.Thisnewseriesaimstohelpour employeesachieveandmaintainfinancialwellnessthroughouttheirlives.

Toensurethecommunitywaseducatedontheenhancements,inpartnershipwithTIAA,132financial consultant&advisormeetingswereheldforGUemployees,189callsweremadetothecontactcenter,and 244participantsattendedfivewebinars.

Sharingresponsibilityforacultureofaccountability, supportandlearning

TheEssentialsforSupervisionSeries(ESS)continuedthisyear, aimingtoincreaseGUsupervisoreffectivenessthroughongoing professionaldevelopment,expandingsupervisors’understandingof laws,regulationsandprotocol,andbuildingsupervisornetworks andconnectionsacrosscampus.AllofthisservestosupportGU supervisors,employees,students,andcarefortheinstitution.

InAugust2023,HRbeganpilotinganenhancedapproachto performancemanagementwith65staffparticipantswhorepresent nineareasanddiversepositionsacrossGonzaga

ZagChatsembracesaquarterlycheck-instructurethathelpstobuild relationshipsbetweenemployeesandsupervisorsthroughongoing, two-wayfeedback,communication,andengagementthroughout theyear.Afterthe“Check-In1”wascompleted,survey respondentsstated:Inthelastthreemonths,employees(94%)and supervisors(91%)hadclearunderstandingofwhat’sexpectedof theemployeeand100%ofsupervisorsand93%ofemployeesfound Check-In1aproductiveuseoftime.Weareexcitedtocontinueto provideupdatestothepilotinthenextacademicyear.

TheGonzagaMentoringCollective

TheGonzagaMentoringCollectiveisamentoringand leadershipdevelopmentprogramthatmatchesdeveloping leaders,“mentees”,withwell-establishedleaders, “mentors”,atGonzaga.

The2023-24cohortincluded14participantsrepresenting 12departmentsacrosstheuniversityengagingin opportunitiestolearnfromoneanother,groweach person’sleadershippractice,andcultivateastrong networkofsupportiveprofessionals Thankyoutoallofour ‘23-’24mentorsandmentees!

Rethinking Onboarding

A key initiative in Human Resources for 2024 is refining our New Employee Experience (NEE) and onboarding process within Human Resources. This is an effort to better support the entire employee experience and establish a more comprehensive and supportive framework for departments and new employees. Stay tuned for future updates!

Updates and Clarifications to the PPM

HR is working on providing intentional updates to Gonzaga’s Policies and Procedures Manual (PPM) in alignment with regulatory requirements Along with these updates, the HR Colleague Relations team and other partners are working to create better clarification of supervisory responsibilities and ease of navigation for the users of the PPM document.
