campus public safety & security LOCATION: Welch Hall, Lower Level
WEB: www.gonzaga.edu/security
PHONE: (509) 313-2222
Campus Public Safety & Security (CPSS) is a service-oriented department that promotes safety, security, education and personal responsibility.
patrol
CPSS officers provide proactive patrol of the campus and University areas designed to detect and deter crime and facilitate a safe environment for the Gonzaga community. Patrols in and around the residence halls are a priority. Officers respond to a variety of incidents on campus including fire alarms, medical calls and reports of criminal activity. CPSS officers work in conjunction with Residence Hall staff, University administration and local police to seek compliance with and enforcement of Gonzaga policies, state laws and local ordinances.
security dispatch
A CPSS Communications Center is staffed by security dispatchers 24/7, 365 days a year. Community members are encouraged to call security at (509) 313-2222 to request assistance or report suspicious persons or circumstances. There are also phones indicated by blue lights around campus that can be used in emergencies. Calls from these phones are answered by the CPSS Communications Center staff.
8
neighborhood
The risk of crime increases away from campus. Students should take particular note that nearly all of the assaults reported to Security each year take place off-campus between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m. on the weekends. Students are encouraged to avoid walking alone through the neighborhood during late night hours and to utilize Security escorts.
policies, rules & expectations
The Student Code of Conducts contains important information about policies, rules and expectations. Take some time to look over the Handbook and become familiar with the information. The alcohol, drug and weapons policies are particularly important. Avoid bringing items to campus that are prohibited.
stay informed
Preventing crime is a team effort involving all Gonzaga community members. Our goal is to share accurate information in a timely manner with our community regarding crime, crime prevention, and campus security and safety issues. In doing so, our hope is that this education will help each of us to make good decisions regarding our own personal safety and the safety of others.
office of community standards LOCATION: Crosby Center, Upper Level PHONE: (509) 313-4009 E-MAIL: ocs@gonzaga.edu WEB: www.gonzaga.edu/ocs
The Office of Community Standards manages the University’s conduct processes and provides resources, education, and workshops related to Gonzaga’s standards of conduct. University conduct processes are formative and developmental in nature and our team strives to balance individual student needs with the needs of the Gonzaga University community. The office publishes the University’s Student Code of Conduct, which outlines expectations for student conduct, student rights and responsibilities, and includes information about things such as the alcohol policy, drug policy, harassment and discrimination policy, and student conduct processes. Students can view the Student Code of Conduct at www.gonzaga.edu/studentcodeofconduct and are encouraged to stop by the office with any questions about Gonzaga’s policies and expectations.
TRANSPORTATION weekend shuttle
Don’t have a car, and want to go downtown with your friends? Gonzaga Student Body Association (GSBA) provides students a free shuttle service to utilize that operates on the weekends. The shuttle is a great alternative to having and maintaining a car and gets students to the heart of downtown Spokane. The shuttle departs from and returns to Desmet Circle on a consistent schedule.
rides
CPSS officers can provide a security escort and courtesy rides to any area on campus, as well as a portion of the immediate neighborhood adjacent to Gonzaga.
bikes
Students are encouraged to bring an older, inexpensive bike to use around campus. We strongly recommend a high quality U-type lock and strongly discourage cable and chain locks. Some residence halls have bike storage – contact Housing and Residence Life at housing@gonzaga.edu or (509) 313-4103 for more information. Once you are on campus, make sure to register your bike by visiting Campus Security & Public Safety in Welch Hall to register your bike or online www.gonzaga.edu/bicycle-registration
parking & permits
Most first year students choose not to bring a vehicle, as there is not a great need and parking is very limited. First year students who choose to bring a vehicle to campus must purchase a parking permits. Student parking permits are $85 + tax per year and can be purchased online starting Aug. 15 or at the Campus Security & Public Safety in Welch Hall. Students may want to consider a Zipcar membership, if they only plan to use a vehicle occasionally (trips to the grocery store, etc.). Visit www.gonzaga.edu/ zipcar for more info. 9
housing & residence life LOCATION: Crosby Center, Upper Level
E-MAIL: housing@gonzaga.edu
PHONE: (509) 313-4103
WEB: www.gonzaga.edu/residence-life
Living on campus is a HUGE part of the Gonzaga experience. Whichever residence hall you are assigned to, that will become your home for the year. It is one of the best places to experience community at Gonzaga. In Residence Life, we describe community using four interrelated concepts: Connection, Interaction, Engagement, and Reflection. Students who live in University housing – regardless of class standing, building location, or type of residence – will find these “pillars” evident in their hall environment, community events, and relationships with each other and the residence life staff.
residence life staff
One of the first people you will meet is your Resident Assistant (RA). These leaders are students who help foster and ensure a sense of community and safety among hall residents. Using the four “pillars” described above as a guide, RAs develop relationships with all residents, coordinate hall events, assist when you find yourself in a difficult situation and encourage you to be involved in the Gonzaga experience.
expectations
Each student arriving at Gonzaga University is beginning to write the first chapter of his/her personal story. The preface for your life story was written by your families. The next chapter of your story will be written in the environment of a deep and rich stay at Gonzaga University. Start thinking now about how you want your story to go. One area is to understand the expectations Gonzaga University has of students in and out of the classroom. Our expectation is you internalize our institutional values throughout your academic life at Gonzaga. Many of the expectations revolve around the use of alcohol, and the policies surrounding visiting others, hosting guests and abiding by noise policies. These are just some of the guiding factors in your GU story.

ROOM & ROOMMATE ASSIGNMENTS: EARLY TO MID-JULY: Tentative building assignment and other important information (you may have received your assignment already). EARLY TO MID-AUGUST: Specific information and confirmation of your housing assignment and roommate Please pay attention to your ZagMail account for important information from the Housing Office. Also note, assigning rooms is a complicated process with about 2,900 returning and new students in 21 residential communities, so give the Housing Office some time to focus on the task.
roommates
Remember that coming to college is a transition for everyone, so give your roommate a fair chance. When you receive roommate information in August, say “hello” and don’t be too quick to critique them based on where they are from, what they may have done (or not done) in high school, or their social media identity. Try and coordinate with them so you don’t bring duplicate items that are OK to share. Our rooms
are not big enough for two microwaves, two fridges, and two 50” TVs. The University believes strongly that living in community (including with a roommate) gives students an opportunity to deeply get to know people of differing backgrounds and attitudes. While you may not become best friends with your roommate, being able to navigate with someone is an important life-skill with benefits beyond college.
STORAGE
There is limited space in your rooms. Bring only the necessities to make packing at the end of the year much easier. Decide, for instance, whether you will really ride your bicycle frequently or only a couple times when the weather is nice.
LAUNDRY
Free residence hall laundry rooms are available with both washers and dryers. Just bring your own detergent and laundry supplies.
KITCHENS
Some halls have “kitchenettes” that can be used by residents. Some cookware is provided for community use, however, serving and beverage ware is not provided.
mail services BUNK & LOFT KITS
Most beds can be bunked. Residence Life staff will have the pins necessary, if you wish to bunk. If you want to loft your bed so the space under it is empty, you need to reserve a loft kit. Kits are limited. To reserve a loft kit, visit www.gonzaga.edu/loftbeds.
housing & residence life faqs
WHY DOES MY APPLICATION SHOW AS NOT COMPLETED?
All incoming students have a “not complete” application until our office assigns housing sometime in the summer. However, the agreement becomes binding once the terms and conditions have been accepted.
WHEN WILL I KNOW MY ROOM AND ROOMMATE?
Tentative building assignments are sent early- to mid-July and room confirmation and roommate contact info are sent early- to mid-August.
I SUBMITTED MY DEPOSIT EARLY BUT DID NOT GET MY TOP CHOICE. WHY?
Priority in the assignment process is based on the date the application terms and conditions are accepted, not the date admissions confirmation or housing deposits are submitted.
I AM AN “EARLY ACTION ADMIT,” BUT DID NOT GET MY TOP CHOICE. WHY?
The demand for some living communities and housing styles exceed the supply. While we try to honor your preferences, assignment to a specific building, living-style, or with a preferred roommate is not guaranteed.
WHEN DO I CHECK-IN?
New students are encouraged to check-in on Friday, Aug. 26 as part of Orientation Weekend. New students registered for Pre-Orientation program will be allowed to arrive early as specified by the Housing Office with each PreOrientation Program. We will be busy making final preparations and training staff, so no other early arrivals please.

Among the many transitions you face coming to college, one of the most important will be in regards to your academics. College courses have higher expectations and it can be a bit overwhelming at first. Resources such as professors, advisors and the Office of Academic Advising and Assistance (AAA) are ready and eager to help you succeed.
class schedules
Advisors in AAA have been working all summer on your first-semester schedules. Combined, our advisors have nearly 25 years of advising experience at Gonzaga, a testament to our vast knowledge of degree requirements across curriculums. We use this knowledge, along with information that you provided to us via the Academic Interest Survey, to compose your first-semester schedule. Your classes will meet a variety of requirements, from University Core, to major and minor, and for some of you, elective credit. We guarantee everything you are registered for will count toward graduation, and will set you on the path to completing your degree in four years.
schedule changes
After you receive your first-semester schedule in August, we anticipate you may have questions or want to make a few changes. For detailed information regarding schedule changes, select schedule at www.gonzaga.edu/ froshregistration.

advising at gonzaga
Grounded in the Jesuit idea of formation, academic advising at Gonzaga is an intentional partnership among students, advisors, and other university professionals to help students develop as reflective, responsible individuals rooted in Jesuit, Catholic and humanistic traditions. Academic advising at Gonzaga emphasizes shared responsibility, in which advisors provide information, perspective and guidance, and students evaluate, discern, and decide. Advisors strive to meet your needs at any given time throughout your Gonzaga career, in course planning, career development, research opportunities, or serving as a mentor. All new students will meet their assigned Academic Advisor for the first time during New Student Orientation.
We highly recommend that you do not buy textbooks until your class schedule is finalized.

Working while going to school can assist students in both funding their education and in better organizing and prioritizing the varying demands of college life. Working actually makes students better students, as they are invested in their education in a way they wouldn’t be if they were not working. Their community broadens, they are able to try out different work environments, and become better prepared to demonstrate their skills after graduation. Having a job can be an important part of the Gonzaga experience, as it often enhances what is taught in the classroom. Students develop an appreciation of a job well done while also contributing toward the mission of the university.

think
about IT. At Gonzaga, we strive to develop the whole person by cultivating students with strong skills in reflective and critical thought, lifelong learning and ethical discernment. College is often a time of beginning to navigate on your own while being presented with many opportunities, challenges and new experiences. Because of this, you are required to complete the online course “Think About It” prior to coming to campus. This course prepares you for the unique challenges and responsibilities of college life by examining the issues of drug and alcohol use, healthy relationships and sexual violence. You will receive information about how to access this online program in late July via your Zagmail account, and must complete the program prior to coming to campus by Aug. 24. If you have questions about “Think About It” or need help, please contact the Center for Cura Personalis at ccp@gonzaga.edu or (509) 313-2227.

Case managers also work collaboratively across the institution to develop support plans that can provide a caring and seamless experience.
The mission of this program is to create a supportive environment that promotes healing and on-going support for students in recovery or those exploring sobriety.
