Annual Digest

2016-17

LETTER FROM THE DEAN Hello from the Jepson Center. The 2017-18 academic year has started off well. We are pleased to bring you the fall issue of the Gonzaga University School of Business Administration Digest. Much has happened since our last issue. We continue to thrive in the face of increased competition. These competitive pressures influence all that we do: from the recruiting of students, faculty, and staff to the attracting of resources to the publication of research. I am proud to say that we are meeting these competitive pressures head-on. The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International recently re-affirmed our accreditation after a rigorous review process. We are one of fewer than 190 business schools worldwide to have earned accreditation in both business and accounting. This is a great tribute to our students, faculty, and staff, and to supporters like you. Thank you! Our success is a function of our vision to be an exemplar of Jesuit business education guided by our values of excellence, engagement, and inspiration. This digest focuses on the value of engagement. This value states that,“we will be an active and engaged member of our university and our community. We work continuously to get our students, faculty, and staff outside of the Jepson Center. Equally important is our drive to bring individuals from outside the building into our space. Engagement can take many forms. Our students take part in numerous competitions. They are interns, participate in on-site organizational visits, take classes from adjunct faculty, network with leaders and managers, hear from speakers, and work on real-world projects .

Our staff and faculty enjoy many of these same opportunities. Our faculty present research findings to professional organizations, serve on committees and other projects, and consult with multiple companies Finally, our staff and faculty have the opportunity to attend professional development workshops as well as serve on the boards of organizations. Last, but certainly not least, all three groups give hundreds of hours in community service. Engagement is central to who we are as a business school in that it is an essential part of our improvement as students, faculty, and staff. Without engagement, we will not improve. If we are not getting better, we fall behind. That, my friends, will not happen. Here, you will read about many of our engagement activities. Our students, staff, and faculty are doing outstanding work and we are proud to share our accomplishments with you. Thank you for your on-going and generous support. Best wishes for a wonderful fall 2017!

Sincerely, Kenneth S. Anderson, Ph.D. Dean, School of Business Administration

NEW RANKINGS In recognition of its excellence in business education, the Gonzaga University School of Business Administration has once again received affirmation of its business and accounting accreditations by AACSB International – the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. The accreditation status, which is reviewed every five years, will be assessed again in 2021.

Less than 5 percent of the world’s business programs – 780 business schools in 53 countries and territories – hold AACSB accreditation. Further, only 185 institutions maintain an additional specialized AACSB accreditation for accounting. Gonzaga’s graduate accounting programs were ranked NO. 28 in the country, in the 2018 U.S. News & World Report rankings released in March 2017. This marked the sixth time in the past eight years that Gonzaga’s graduate accounting programs were ranked in the TOP 30 nationally.

Gonzaga’s Graduate School of Business was named among the “BEST COLLEGES” in The Princeton Review for 2017.

RECOGNITIONS PWC INQuires Program Awards $10,000 to Accounting Programs Gonzaga’s accounting programs were awarded $10,000 through the PWC INQuires program to be used to integrate data analytics into the accounting program's curricula by Fall 2018. In May, Professor Matt Hoag attended a curriculum development conference in Amsterdam on the topic of integrating data analytics/data science into the business school curriculum. Several presenters from academia and industry shared experiences and interacted with representatives from schools around the world to discuss their efforts. This year, Matt will work with colleagues, alumni and advisory board members to lay out an accounting curriculum that more intentionally integrates data analytics concepts and technology skills with the technical accounting content and professional development elements that are a hallmark of our current curriculum. The curriculum development will encompass all three accounting programs: Bachelor of Accounting, Master of Accounting, and Master of Science in Taxation.

Welcomed Into the CFA University Recognition Program The Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Program sets a standard for developing the skills, standards, competence, and integrity of financial analysts, portfolio managers, investment advisers, and other investment professionals worldwide. It is widely considered the investment profession’s most rigorous credentialing program. The School of Business Administration’s undergraduate finance concentration has been welcomed into the Chartered Financial Analyst University Recognition Program. Gonzaga’s finance curriculum, part of the Bachelor of Business Administration degree, has incorporated at least 70 percent of the CFA Program candidate body of knowledge and emphasizes the CFA Institute code of ethics and standards of practice. The CFA Program positions students to obtain the chartered financial analyst designation, which, according to the CFA Institute, has become the most respected and recognized investment credential in the world.

Entry into the CFA Institute University Recognition Program signals to prospective students, employers, and the marketplace that Gonzaga’s finance curriculum is closely tied to professional practice and is advantageous for students preparing to take CFA examinations. Additionally, Gonzaga is eligible to receive a limited number of student scholarships for the CFA Program each year.

The Society for Human Resource Management Renewed Certificate of Alignment The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) renewed the certificate of alignment between Gonzaga’s human resource management concentration in the School of Business and the SHRM HR Curriculum Guidelines. The certificate, which is renewed every four years, was previously granted in 2012 and 2015. There are many benefits of aligning students to the HR concentration. First, the certificate signals to employers that students have a skill set needed for professional HR positions. Second, students enrolled in an HR degree program at an educational institution aligned to SHRM’s HR Curriculum Guidelines will be able to apply for the SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) exam. Eligible students must be in their final year of study in an HR degree program and have a minimum of 500 hours of relevant experience. Third, SHRM provides a link to instructional resources for use in the classroom. Only 335 educational institutions worldwide have been acknowledged by SHRM as being in alignment with the suggested guides and templates. SHRM is the world’s largest HR professional society, representing 285,000 members in more than 165 countries.

Through all her years of serving faculty and staff, she always made time for students and their needs. Her naturally pleasant demeanor attracted others to seek her assistance and advice. Kathy Morrison is missed by all who relied on her service in the School, her daily greeting,` and her offer and willingness to help wherever she could be of assistance. Her retirement days are well earned.

Casey earned his Ph.D. from Washington State University in 2011, and has served in faculty positions at the University of Montana (2011 – 2017) and Eastern Washington University (2004 – 2007). Prior to academia, Casey was employed in the audit practice at KPMG LLP in Seattle. He also worked with a family-owned medical supplies retailer and has served on the Board of Directors of both for-profit and not-for-profit organizations. Casey is licensed as a Certified Public Accountant in the State of Washington. STUDENT COMPETITIONS There are many ways the School of Business implements learning-by-doing, including student competitions. There are more and more competitive opportunities for our students; some of which are discipline specific (e.g., PriceWaterhouseCoopers for accounting) while others are more generic (e.g., DECA). Our students have a demonstrated track record of great success including top finishes in regional and national events.

ADVISORY BOARDS The SBA has a number of advisory boards that include individuals from within Gonzaga, from across the region, and experts from different industries who have extensive experience in business and other related fields. Advisory Board members contribute to the business school in a number of ways: committing their time, energy, expertise and their financial resources to helping the school achieve its mission. Our Board members help determine the school’s direction, develop priorities, participate in programing and other educational initiatives, and serve as advocates in business, community, and educational circles. JESUIT INSPIRATION Gonzaga's mission is centered around the Jesuit tradition of concern for others. The School of Business instills caring for others through various community involvement programs, allowing our students to apply their technical knowledge to help the Spokane community. Many of our students, staff, and faculty members are volunteers in their own communities and on-campus, working to better the lives of those around them.

VITA: For the fourth consecutive year, Gonzaga University accounting and economics students working with the IRS and United Way have helped generate more than $1 million in refunds through their free income tax return preparation efforts for low- and middle-income Spokane residents. Students from Eastern Washington University and Whitworth University have joined the effort. The United Way’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site, which was staffed by 70 IRS-certified student volunteers from Gonzaga, along with nine from EWU and eight from Whitworth, filed 793 electronic and paper returns and generated $1.09 million in total refunds. This year’s effort included a total of more than 851 hours of volunteer service by GU students. VITA provides Gonzaga students the opportunity to implement many of the concepts they learn in class while providing community service. Many VITA clients would have had difficulty obtaining much-needed refunds if such services were not offered. To volunteer, Gonzaga students attended two full days of training over a holiday weekend and then pass a certification exam.

Partnering with Second Harvest and The Bite2Go Program The entire business school has committed to supporting the Bite2Go Program by adopting Linwood Elementary School, since 2015. Linwood is a public elementary school in the Spokane School District with around 520 students. This program is in partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank and provides weekend food for at-risk youth. The students receive a discreet weekly delivery of food packets to take home for the weekend. Staff/faculty have also participated in the school's end of year The School of Business brought in 2,400 pounds of “field day,” hosted a ‘faculty food for the Spokane's local food bank, 2nd Harvest appreciation’ event, and provided a little extra for those student recipients around holiday break with gift bags. Generous donations were received for the gift bags and we were able to provide gloves, some sweets and a puzzle or toy to all.

THANK YOU FRITZ AND JEANIE WOLFF On October 13th, the School of Business Administration held an official Grand Reopening ceremony to celebrate the completion of the newly renovated Wolff Auditorium. Alumni, community leaders, and Gonzaga students, faculty, staff, and administration were in attendance to thank Fritz and Jeanie Wolff for their generous donation that made this renovation possible. Dean Anderson welcomed all and shared the vision, history and impact this space is having on the GU community. President McCulloh shared the history of Gonzaga's long relationship with the Wolff family and provided multiple examples of the family's abundant generosity. Together they presented Fritz with the original Wolff signage. Fr. Case, S.J. provided a blessing in closing. This renovation provides state-of-the-art digital multimedia capabilities with multiple displays and a large main screen, ideal for lectures, speakers or educational events. A collaborative space for the SBA creates opportunities to work along with our community partners, expanding our educational offerings for the students and the greater Spokane region.

FACULTY PUBLICATIONS School of Business Administration faculty members embrace the vision and values of the school exemplified by their professional development work. The research produced by our faculty allows them to bring cutting-edge knowledge to the classroom, helping ensure that the SBA delivers a high quality, relevant education to all its students. This is particularly valuable in the SBA's graduate programs where our students are more likely to take this knowledge back to the organizations they serve. Beyond the classroom, our faculty deliver knowledge to our community partners through consulting, speeches and talks, board service, and other networking opportunities. All of these activities allow for a higher quality of engagement between the SBA and the communities it serves.

Explore the depth and breadth of our faculty’s most recent publications, and ongoing research.
