Head Coach Einar Thorarinsson 15th Year at Gonzaga; Cornell University, 1975
Einar Thorarinsson enters his 15th season at Gonzaga University as he looks to guide the Bulldogs to their second trip to the NCAA Tournament in three years and the program’s third trip overall. Thorarinsson had the Bulldogs on the doorstep of the NCAA Tournament in 2008 after the Bulldogs received an at-large bid in 2007. The 2008 season came down to the final match with the Bulldogs still in the West Coast Conference title chase. Gonzaga finished tied for second, three points out of first. Thorarinsson is the winningest coach in Bulldog men’s soccer history, bringing a 119-11022 record into the 2009 campaign. Since his arrival on the GU campus in January of 1995, Thorarinsson has made an immediate impact on the fortunes of the program, turning it into an annual contender for the WCC men’s soccer crown and leading the Zags to its inaugural NCAA Tournament appearance in 2001. He earned his third WCC Coach of the Year honor in 2005, and won his 100th Gonzaga match in 2006. Thorarinsson took a team laden with 10 seniors back to the NCAA Tournament in 2007, the Bulldogs earning an atlarge bid for their second NCAA Tournament appearance. The Bulldogs had their inaugural Hermann Trophy candidate in 2007 in senior George Josten, who left Gonzaga third in career goals (34) and assists (17), and fourth in career points (85). Josten also became the first Bulldog to be a three-time All-WCC first-team selection and a three-time ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American (first team in 2006 and ’07, and third team in 2005). He also earned Far West Region first-team honors and become the Bulldogs inaugural soccer All-America selection by being named to the 2007 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas All-America third team. Off the field Josten was also honored as the 2007 NSCAA/adidas Men’s Scholar Athlete of the Year and led a group of 47 athletes named to the 2007 NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-America Team. Under his tutelage the Bulldogs had two players selected in the January 2008 MLS Draft and had a third sign as a free agent. Josten was taken in the second round as the 20th overall pick by the Columbus Crew, defender Austin

Washington was drafted in the fourth round as the 54th overall pick by the Chicago Fire and keeper Vito Higgins signed with the Los Angeles Galaxy after attending a tryout camp. Thorarinsson also saw the Bulldogs return to the national rankings in 2007 for the first time since 2001. Gonzaga was ranked as high as 12th on the national scene after wins over defending NCAA College Cup champion UC Santa Barbara and 15th-ranked University of Washington, the win over cross-state rival Washington the first in program history. Prior to 2007 the Bulldogs had been on the verge NCAA Tournament berths in 2005 and ’06. In 2005 Gonzaga went into the final weekend with a shot at the WCC regular-season title, and in 2006 Gonzaga was again in the title hunt most of the season before settling for third place. Thorarinsson, who joined the Bulldogs from across town at Whitworth College, inherited a squad which had gone 2-13-1 in 1994. Improvement was minimal to 3-10-2 in 1995, then the Zags made noise in the West Coast Conference in 1996, going into the final weekend of conference play in control of their own destiny. Although Gonzaga’s title aspirations fell short, the club made an eight-game improvement to 11-6-1 to lead all WCC teams in victories. Its 4-2-0 conference record landed the team in third place and Thorarinsson was accorded WCC Coach of the Year honors. The upward swing continued in 1997, Gonzaga sharing the WCC crown with Santa Clara University at 4-2-0, Gonzaga missing out on the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament by virtue of a 2-1 setback at SCU. The 14-4-0 record again led all WCC teams in victories, and Thorarinsson became the first Gonzaga coach in any sport to earn back-to-back WCC Coach of the Year plaudits. Gonzaga also witnessed its first soccer Player of the Year with Jeff McAllister garnering the honor in 1997. The Bulldogs finished that season ranked 16th in the nation by Soccer Times. Back-to-back was the theme in 1998 as Thorarinsson again led Gonzaga to a share of the WCC soccer title. The Bulldogs entered the final match of the season with a 5-0-0 record and needed a tie or win against San Diego to claim the title outright and secure their inaugural NCAA Tournament berth. Gonzaga fell short in the match, losing the title 2-1 to USD.

In 1999 Gonzaga once again remained in the title hunt until the final match of the season, losing to Portland 5-2 and dropping to a fourth place finish in the conference standings. The season was highlighted by one of the toughest schedules in Bulldog history with eight matches against nationally-ranked teams. Gonzaga responded with a 4-3-1 record in those matches including upsets of No. 1 Creighton (1-0) in Omaha, Neb.; No. 5 Virginia in Charlottesville, Va., and a 1-0 setback at No. 1 Santa Clara. Prior to joining the Bulldogs, Thorarinsson coached at Whitworth College for nine seasons while posting a 11952-13 record, five Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges titles and NAIA national rankings in five of his nine seasons. He was named NAIA District I Coach of the Year from 1988-90 and again in 1992. He also coached the Pirates women for two seasons from 1990-91. Thorarinsson has strong soccer ties in Spokane. He coached East Valley High School from 1987-90, taking the Knights to the final four in 1990. He has coached in the Olympic Developmental Program since 1990 and was a United States Soccer Federation Region IV staff coach from 1991-99. He also coached the Spokane Shadow of the USISL in their first of two seasons of 1995-96. Thorarinsson holds national coaching licenses from the USSF and NSCAA. The native of Reykjavik, Iceland, played at Monroe
Community College in Rochester, NY, from 1971-72, and for Cornell University from 1973-74. He is a 1975 graduate of Cornell with a degree in landscape architecture. He and his wife Melanie, have two daughters Kyra and Brynja, both Gonzaga graduates. The Thorarinsson File

Assistant Coach Mike Thompson Ninth Year at Gonzaga; Gonzaga University, 2000
Mike Thompson is in his second stint as an assistant coach on head coach Einar Thorarinsson’s staff after serving as an assistant coach during the 2000 season. He rejoined the Bulldogs coaching staff in the fall of 2002. Thompson returned not only to a former coaching stop but also to his alma mater after playing four seasons for the Bulldogs from 1996-99. During that stretch Thompson helped lead Gonzaga to back-to-back West Coast Conference co-titles in 1997 and 1998. During his four years at GU, Thompson was one of the top assist men in the WCC, setting both the single-season and career record for assists at Gonzaga. He still ranks fourth in career assists with 16 and tied for first in single-season assists with 8. His 18 career goals still rank fifth. In 1998 he earned first-
team All-West Coast Conference honors and wrapped up his playing career in 1999 with an honorable mention All-WCC selection. He played three seasons with the Spokane Shadow of the United States Premier Developmental League. At Gonzaga, Thompson will work with the Bulldogs midfielders and forwards. The native of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, completed his B.A. in history and secondary education in December of 2000, and his teaching certification in May, 2002. He was married to former Gonzaga women’s soccer player Molly Bales on April 24, 2004. They welcomed a son, Caden, in 2005, and a daughter, Natalie Paige, in 2007.
Assistant Coach Vito Higgins Second Year at Gonzaga; Gonzaga University, 2008
Vito Higgins, who made the move from the field to the coaching box for Gonzaga University in 2008 following an outstanding career in the nets for the Bulldogs, returns for his second season. The native of Kailua, Hawai’i, joined head coach Einar Thorarinsson’s staff after a foot injury cut short his professional career. The Bulldogs all-time leader in saves with 305, he had signed as a free agent with the Los Angeles Galaxy of the MLS in the spring of 2008 following a tryout, but decided to forego his professional career when Thorarinsson offered him a spot on his staff. Higgins was instrumental in the Bulldogs reaching the NCAA Tournament in 2007, posting a 0.71 goalsagainst-average for the season to rank second on the single-season list behind fellow Hawaiian Josh Fouts and

his 0.68 in 1998. Higgins also posted a 1.34 career GAA to rank third behind Fouts (0.83) and another Hawaiian, Mike McCarthy (1.16). His 14 career shutouts rank second behind Fouts. He started 70 of his 72 appearances and played more than 6,500 minutes in his career.

Veteran Club Could Be Factor In WCC Chase Gonzaga University went into the final match of the 2008 season with a chance to tie for the West Coast Conference regular-season crown. And although the Bulldogs lost that regular-season finale, head coach Einar Thorarinsson is hoping that experience might pay dividends in 2009 as his veteran squad sets its sights on another tough West Coast Conference race. The Bulldogs, 9-8-2 overall and 6-5-1 in WCC play a year ago, return seven starters, a starting keeper and 10 other returnees this season. Add to the mix a strong group of newcomers and Thorarinsson may have the makings of a special season. Nick Barclay, the 2008 WCC Defender of the Year, is just one of the players who brings outstanding credentials into the fold this year. The native of Boise, Idaho, became the first Bulldog to cart home the WCC Defender of the Year accolade as he helped the Bulldogs hold opponents to one goal or less in 10 of their 19 matches. He’s joined again on defense by a pair of WCC honorees from a year ago. Senior starter Tim Muravez was an honorable mention pick and sophomore Mitch Boland was named to the WCC All-Freshman team his rookie season. Canadian Christian Seon saw limited action last year as a sophomore transfer, and a pair of redshirt freshmen – James Partee and Josh Petosa – will also be in the hunt for minutes and add depth to the defense. Newcomer Stefan Thor Eysteinsson from Iceland will also help shore up the defense. He joins the Bulldogs as a junior after attending college in Iceland. Offensively the Bulldogs return nine players who contributed 27 of the 28 goals they scored a year ago, led by senior forward Tye Perdido who had a team-leading 8 goals and 19 points. Senior midfielder Ben Funkhouser is back after getting 3 goals, a team-high 6 assists and 12 points for second on the squad. Nick Love, who missed three matches with a broken hand and started two of 16 appearances, had 4 goals and 9 points, Muravez had 3 goals and 7 points, Zach Smith, a sophomore, had 3 goals and 6 points and Barclay had a goal and 4 assists for 6 points. Boland and fellow returning sophomore Mitchell Weller each contributed a pair of goals. Sophomore Colin Flynn came off the bench in 14 matches a year ago, redshirt sophomore Joel Schilperoort appeared in one match a year ago prior to being sidelined for the season and redshirt freshman midfielder Cameron Ballantyne is also in the mix. Smith, who came off the bench in 17 matches a year ago in a utility role, will move to forward to help provide depth. A host of newcomers will also vie for playing time, led by James Matern, a freshman midfielder from Spo-
6
kane’s Ferris High. He’ll be joined by fellow high school teammate midfielder Ian Hartfield and Greater Spokane League rival Casey Ames of Lewis and Clark, also in the midfield. High-scoring forward Eric Nielsen from Boise, Idaho, will also try to crack a tough offensive lineup. Both keepers from a year ago return. Scott Barnum started 17 matches and posted a 1.49 GAA, while Andrew Hickman had a pair of starts among his three appearances and a 2.78 GAA. Redshirt Jeff Renslo, who was at the open tryout a year ago but did not make the squad, attended Gonzaga last season and is on the team this season. Freshman Ryan Caballero gives the Bulldogs four keepers. “There is going to be a lot of competition for spots this year,” 15th-year head coach Einar Thorarinsson said. “This is the most competition we’ve seen.” Thorarinsson knows Perdido and Barclay are going to be the main targets, but he thinks both are up to the task. “Tye and Nick are, obviously, our offensive and defensive leaders. They’ll be the focus of everybody we play and I think they’ll handle that situation. But I think we proved last year we are more than just a one or two dimensional team. Our offense was as distributed as it has been in recent years, and defensively you couldn’t go away from Nick because we had guys like Muravez and Boland.” The newcomers have also caught the eye of the coach. “I don’t know who will redshirt. Matern is a solid player who could be an impact guy as a freshman. I think he has a chance to be a starter. But you can go right down the list of newcomers – plus put the returning redshirts in the mix – and this team has a lot of depth and they will be hard to keep off the field,” Thorarinsson said. The Bulldogs were picked to finish tied for third with Loyola Marymount University in the WCC pre-season balloting of coaches, a position Thorarinsson won’t argue with. “I think that’s about right. San Francisco is going to be very hard to beat again and Santa Clara is going to bounce back from last year’s last-place finish,” he said of the two teams picked ahead of the Bulldogs. USF is going for its fourth regular-season title in six years. But Thorarinsson said his Bulldogs could challenge for a higher finish. “This is a veteran team that should only get better as the year goes along. With a couple of breaks here or there we could again be right in the thick of the title chase right down to the final weekend,” Thorarinsson said. And that’s where he hopes the experience of last year will pay dividends this year.

Bulldog Soccer All-Stars
Jeff McAllister 1997 West Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Year
George Josten 2nd Round Draft Pick Columbus Crew (MLS)
One of the most prolific goal scorers in the history of the West Coast Conference, Jeff McAllister helped place Gonzaga University men’s soccer on the national map during his 4-year career from 1994-97. A two-time first team All-WCC selection, McAllister capped his collegiate career in 1997 by leading the Bulldogs to their first of two WCC men’s co-titles. His 19 goals and 46 total points led the WCC and ranked fifth in the nation. For his efforts, McAllister was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Year and a first team All-Far West Region and All-America selection. McAllister led the Bulldogs in goals scored and scoring all four seasons. He shattered all Gonzaga men’s soccer records, setting new standards for future Zags to follow. McAllister ranks first in career goals scored (45), total points (102) and ranks seventh on the career assists list (12). His 19 goals during his senior season rank first on the GU single-season list and second on the West Coast Conference single-season list. McAllister also ranks first in career goals scored during WCC matches with 16.
Brian Ching 2nd Round Draft Pick Los Angeles Galaxy (MLS)
One of the best all around players in the history of Gonzaga men’s soccer, Brian Ching was selected in the second round of the 2001 Major League Soccer Super Draft by the Los Angeles Galaxy. A two-time first-team All-West Coast Conference selection, Ching became the first Gonzaga player and first Hawaiian player ever selected in the Major League Soccer Draft as well as the first U.S. World Cup team pick in 2006. Ching made the playing roster and scored his first professional goal against Tokyo Verdy 1969 during an exhibition game in Japan. Ching also knocked home a gamewinner for the Galaxy during a match against Mexican First Division Champion, Chivas Rayadas de Guadalajara. Ching made his MLS debut for LA on April 9, 2001 when the Galaxy hosted the San Jose Earthquakes. In 2003, Ching joined the San Jose Earthquakes (now Houston Dynamo) and started 14 of 19 matches with six goals scored. He also earned his first cap for the US National team during a friendly competition against Wales . He finished his collegiate career with 34 goals to rank tied for third all-time on the Gonzaga career list, 23 assists for first and 91 points to rank tied for second in career points. During his five-year run at Gonzaga, Ching helped guide the Zags to back-to-back West Coast Conference crowns and a second-place WCC finish in 2000.

George Josten put his mark on Gonzaga University soccer as perhaps the most honored player in Bulldog history. The Bulldogs inaugural MAC Hermann Trophy candidate as a senior in 2007, the native of Idaho Falls, Idaho, became Gonzaga’s first soccer All-America selection by being named to the 2007 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas All-America third team. He was also tabbed the NSCAA/adidas Men’s Scholar Athlete of the Year and was a two-time member of the Scholar All-America Team. He was also a three-time ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America selection, including a first-team pick as a junior and senior. He maintained a 3.83 GPA in mechanical engineering. Josten finished his career with 34 goals to tie him with World Cup team member Brian Ching for third on the all-time Gonzaga charts, his 17 assists rank third and his 85 points rank fourth. In addition to his two first-team All-Far West Region selections, Josten was a third-team pick as a sophomore in 2005, making him the first three-time selection in Gonzaga history. Josten was a three-time All-West Coast Conference first-team selection. He became the second player in Gonzaga history to be selected in the MLS Draft, going in the second round as the 20th overall pick by the Columbus Crew.
Austin Washington 4th Round Draft Pick Chicago Fire (MLS)
Spokane native Austin Washington transferred to Gonzaga University as a sophomore and made an immediate impact on the Bulldogs defense. The two-time All-West Coast Conference second-team selection started all 58 of his appearances in a Gonzaga uniform. His career was capped with a NCAA Tournament appearance his senior season of 2007 as he helped the Bulldogs to a 0.71 goals-against-average, second on the all-time school charts. The graduate of Ferris High was named to the Anders Navy Classic in Annapolis, Md., as a junior. Washington became the third player in Gonzaga history to be chosen in the MLS Draft when he was selected in the fourth round as the 54th overall pick by the Chicago Fire. He joined teammate George Josten as marking the first time two Bulldogs had been drafted in the same year.

Bulldog All-Stars Vito Higgins Free Agent Signee LA Galaxy (MLS) Vito Higgins left Gonzaga University as one of the outstanding keepers in Gonzaga history, keeping alive a long list of Hawaiian dominance in the Bulldog nets. The native of Kailua, Hawai’i, was instrumental in the Bulldogs reaching the NCAA Tournament in 2007, posting a 0.71 goals-against-average for the season to rank second on the single-season list behind fellow Hawaiian Josh Fouts and his 0.68 in 1998. He sat out the 2004 season rehabilitating from a medial collateral injury in the spring and a viral infection that sidelined him in the fall, but he returned to action in 2005 to start the first 16 matches prior to being sidelined for two matches following an in-match collision. He played every minute of every match as a junior (2006) and senior (2007). Higgins attended a tryout camp with the Los Angeles Galaxy and was signed as a free agent in the spring of 2008. A foot injury later that summer cut his career short and he returned to Gonzaga as an assistant coach.

Gonzaga University junior Nick Barclay was named the 2008 West Coast Conference men’s soccer Defensive Player of the Year, the first Bulldog to earn the honor. He was also named to the All-WCC first team, the first All-WCC selection of his collegiate career. The Boise, Idaho, native became just the second Bulldog to earn one of the conference’s top honors, Jeff McAllister earning Player of the Year accolades in 1997. Barclay started all 18 of his appearances in 2008, often matched against the opponents’ top player. He helped the Bulldogs stay in the WCC title chase until the final weekend of the season, Gonzaga finishing tied for second just three points out of the top spot. His lone goal of the season proved to be the match winner against Loyola Marymount University in a 2-1 victory in the home finale. But it wasn’t his offense that made him valuable. In their nine victories only twice did the Bulldogs allow more than one goal, and nine times the opposition was held to one goal or less. Gonzaga went 9-8-2 overall in 2008, giving the Bulldogs three straight 9-win seasons with Barclay a part of all of them. The 2008 campaign came on the heels of a solid 2007 season which saw Barclay help the Bulldogs to their second NCAA Tournament appearance as the Bulldogs allowed just 0.71 goals/game, just shy of the school record of 0.68.

When the West Coast Conference first got its start back in 1952, the founders really had only one goal in mind...to create a convenient way for five Bay Area schools to play basketball. Now, 57 years later, a marvelously cohesive athletics league, which is competitive at the national level in 13 sports, is entering 31 seasons under its present eight-team mix. The current members of the WCC span the western coast of the United States from Canada to Mexico. Though the institutions range from the pine forests of eastern Washington state to the sun drenched beaches of southern California, the combined excellence in athletics and academics sets the conference apart on the national scene and draws the individual institutions together in a common mission. The WCC crowns champions in 13 sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, women’s rowing, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s tennis and women’s volleyball. The league was chartered by five Bay Area institutions (San Francisco, Saint Mary’s, Santa Clara, San Jose State and Pacific) as the California Basketball Association, playing its first game on January 2, 1953. After two seasons of play under that name, the conference expanded to include Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine in 1955, and became the “West Coast Athletic Conference” in 1956. The name was shortened in 1989. The current alignment of Gonzaga, LMU, Pepperdine, Portland, Saint Mary’s, San Diego, San Francisco and Santa Clara has remained unchanged since 1979, making the WCC the third most stable conference in the nation. Only the Ivy League and Pacific-10 Conference have been together longer. Men’s soccer became an officially recognized West Coast Conference sport in the fall of 1988 and the league has become one of the dominant NCAA Division I soccer leagues in the country. West Coast Conference men’s soccer teams have made more than 70 NCAA College Cup appearances with five national championships. The league set another benchmark in 2001 as five of the seven men’s soccer playing institutions advanced to the NCAA College Cup, an unprecedented 71 percent of the league appearing in post-season competition.

Gonzaga University
UNIVERSITY ORIGIN
Gonzaga was founded in 1887 by Father Joseph Cataldo, S.J., as a frontier boarding school for boys. The school has established its own unique identity since starting as a single building along the banks of the Spokane River. Named for the Jesuit Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, the patron of youth, the 122-year-old institution has grown and matured into one of the West’s premier regional universities. Gonzaga’s educational philosophy is based on the 469-year-old Ignatian model that aims to educate the whole person-mind, body and spirit - an integration of science and art, faith and reason, action and contemplation. The state Legislature accorded Gonzaga status as a University in 1912, the same year the School of Law began. The 1920’s were highlighted by the establishment of the School of Business Administration (1921) and the School of Education (1928). The Graduate School was launched in 1931 and the School of Engineering was created in 1934 to meet the demand sparked by the new national interest in hydroelectric projects. Enrollment swelled in the late 1940’s due largely to the G.I. Bill and women were first admitted in 1948. Situated on 94 acres of landscaped campus located in a residential section of Spokane, the Gonzaga campus continues to grow and change with the times. Opening in the summer of 2000, Gonzaga’s School of Law Building becomes the newest addition to the growing urban campus. A new Rosauers School of Education building was completed in the spring of 1994, and Jundt Art Center and Museum opened in the fall of 1995. Other campus additions in recent years are the Herak Center which houses the School of Engineering and the Jepson Center which has the School of Business Administration as its tenants. The former Crosby Library was transformed into a new Student Union Building.

Gonzaga University What the Future Holds In April 2002, Gonzaga launched a $119 million capital campaign entitled “Educating People the World Needs Most.” The campaign will provide new scholarships and professorships, and construction and renovation of buildings for athletics and recreation, the sciences, business, engineering, the performing arts and residence living. The Start of Jesuit Education Founded in 1540 by Basque nobleman Ignatius of Loyola, the Society of Jesus is an order of Catholic priests and brothers, who with their lay colleagues, carry on a 469-year tradition of eduction excellence. While recovering from a battle wound, Ignatius’ life was changed by reading the Bible and studying the lives of the saints. His religious experiences led him to renounce the life of courtier and soldier to serve God. That inspired him to write the Spiritual Exercises, a work that would become the basis of Jesuit spirituality and mission. After studying at the University of Paris for seven years, he founded a school based on his scholarship. At the time of Ignatius’ death in 1556, Jesuits ran 33 colleges and universities worldwide. Georgetown University, founded in 1789, became the first American Jesuit university. There are now 112 Jesuit colleges and universities in the world, including 33 in the United States. Gonzaga University is named for Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, a 16th century priest. In his effort to comfort the ill in Rome during the plague, he caught the scourge and died a young man. He is named the Patron Saint of Youth. www.GoZags.com * www.twitter.com/GonzagaBulldogs

Gonzaga Athletics Athletic tradition at Gonzaga University is almost as old as the University itself, ranging from the football hey days at the early part of the century to the Bulldogs foray into the NCAA Elite Eight. As the University has grown from a single building along the banks of the Spokane River in 1887 into a major urban campus, so too has the Gonzaga athletic program grown. Gonzaga now competes in 16 varsity sports at the NCAA Division I level and is a proud member of the West Coast Conference. In the early part of the century, football was the game at Gonzaga as future NFL Hall-of-Famers Ray Flaherty and Tony Canadeo joined with many others to put Bulldog Athletics on the map. As Gonzaga slowly dropped football as an intercollegiate sport, hockey came to the forefront as Gonzaga won the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Hockey Championship in 1939. During the 1940’s and 1950’s men’s basketball and boxing became the feature sports at Gonzaga as the Bulldog’s basketball team reached the 1948 NAIA National Tournament played in Kansas City. Two years later Gonzaga won its only NCAA National Championship to date as the Bulldog boxing team won the 1950 NCAA Championship. Men’s basketball remained in the spotlight through the late 1950’s as Gonzaga’s all-time leading rebounder Jerry Vermillion and all-time leading scorer Frank Burgess graced the hardwood for the Zags. Through the 1970’s and early 1980’s Gonzaga baseball came to dominate play in the Pacific Northwest. The Bulldogs won eight conference titles over a 10-year span from 1971-1981. That 10-year run witnessed seven post-season appearances for Gonzaga, highlighted by a NCAA West Regional championship appearance in 1978. Women’s athletics had some of its most successful years as the 1990’s started with both the volleyball and basketball teams making post-season appearances. Behind All-Americans Lisa Petticord and Kelley Cunningham, the volleyball Bulldogs made their only NCAA Tournament appearance in 1990. In 1994 the women’s basketball team grabbed the spotlight making it’s first post-season tournament with a bid to the Women’s National Invitational Tournament in Amarillo, Texas. The women’s team returned to post-season action in 2004 and 2005 with back-to-back WNIT bid. In 2007 Gonzaga women’s basketball won its inagural WCC Tournament Champiopnship and earned its first berth into the NCAA Tournament. Women’s basketball continues to keep its name in the spotlight, prodcuing its most successful season to date as it made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2009. Women’s crew has also become a dominant sport with the team winning 12 West Coast Conference Rowing Championships and capturing the ECAC National Invitational championship in 2003.

A Formula Of Success Gonzaga has been vaulted on the national scene based on the success of its men’s basketball team in the NCAA Tournament. In 1999, the Bulldogs captured the hearts of the nation with their incredible run to the Elite Eight, following up that success with Sweet Sixteen appearances in 2000, 2001 and 2009. Men’s basketball has continued to build on that national success making 11-straight NCAA Tournament appearances and reaching the top echelon of the national rankings. In 2002 Gonzaga finished the season ranked sixth in the Associated Press poll only to top that success two seasons later with a No. 3 national ranking and a No. 2 seed in the 2004 NCAA Tournament. National Player of the Year candidate Adam Morrison led the nation in scoring in 2006. He was the third pick in the 2006 NBA Draft, selected by the Charlotte Bobcats. Along with team success, the Bulldogs have also had numerous individual accolades during the past couple of years with basketball stars Dan Dickau, Blake Stepp and Adam Morrison each earning All-American honors while being named to the Wooden All-American teams. On the baseball field Nate Gold led the NCAA in home runs in 2002 while earning All-America honors and becoming a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy and Rotary Smith awards for collegiate baseball Player of the Year. In 2004 catcher Kiel Thibault continued that success as he was named a semifinalist for the Johnny Bench Award for baseball’s top collegiate catcher. In 2007, pitcher Clayton Mortenson was named Louisville Slugger Third Team All-America and was drafted 36th overall in the MLB draft. On the water women’s rower Maria Bokulich and Kelly Steinhaus made names for themselves with All-America accolades and invites to the U.S. Rowing National Team non-Olympic camp. In addition to standout athletic teams through the years and recent individual success, Gonzaga has also been home to many top notch individual athletes such as the NBA’s all-time assist and steals leader and 2009 NBA Hall of Fame inductee - John Stockton; U.S. Speed Skating Champion and 2006 Olympian - Kristine Holzer; U.S. National Soccer team member - Brian Ching; Florida Marlins World Series catcher - Mike Redmond; 2004 National League Rookie of the Year and 2005, 2006 and 2009 AllStar - Jason Bay; U.S. Olympic Rowing team member - Monica Tranel-Michini; former two-time U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Golf Champion - Connie Oldershaw Guthrie; and Stanley Cup winning goal-keeper and 1945 Calder Cup recipient for the Toronto Maple Leafs - Frank McCool.

Gonzaga University Josh Burrows had a vision and Gonzaga University had a need. The two culminated into what you see before you today, the Josh Burrows Performance Athletic Center. His vision was to provide Gonzaga University and its student-athletes the winning edge in sports science, emphasizing state-of-the-art sports training methods. That vision has now become a reality. A 1979 graduate of Gonzaga University and longtime Spokane resident, Josh has always been interested in dynamic sports training. He has spent countless hours researching and identifying improved means of increasing athletic performance, some of it through his own athletic training. With the dedication of the Josh Burrows Performance Center, “JB”, as he is affectionately known by the student-athletes, will be remembered as the “father of fitness” within the Bulldogs Athletics Family, as student-athletes for years to come will reap the rewards of his vision.

Gonzaga Academic Success Gonzaga coaches take an active role in monitoring the academic standing of their athletes. Coaches require student-athletes to attend study table when on the road for an extended period, and several coaches have also adopted a study table policy at home. If a student-athlete is struggling academically, there are several avenues of help available. Tutors are available specifically for student-athletes, and student-athletes can also utilize the general Gonzaga University tutors, study labs and computer work stations available to the entire student population. The success of the attention paid to the academic welfare of the student-athletes is reflected in their performance in the classroom. During the 2008-09 academic year, 85 student-athletes earned their way on to the President’s List with a grade point average of 3.7 or higher, and 80 were on the Dean’s List with a GPA of 3.5-3.69. Overall, Gonzaga’s 300-plus student-athletes combined for a 3.22 GPA for the spring semester, maintaining their cumulative GPA of 3.21. Gonzaga student-athletes constantly dot the West Coast Conference all-academic teams, and on a national scale 20 student-athletes have been named to CoSIDA/Verizon Academic All-America squads. The Gonzaga baseball program has produced six Academic All-America accolades, including Eric Rodland and Jared Hertz, both twotime honorees. Gonzaga’s WCC Scholar-Athletes of the Year

Thayne McCulloh - Interim President
Dr. Thayne McCulloh (BA, ’89) became Gonzaga University’s interim president in the summer of 2009, succeeding the eleven-year tenure of Jesuit President Father Robert J. Spitzer. McCulloh, with 19 years as a Gonzaga administrator, knows that it is his job – ‘interim’ title notwithstanding – to collaborate with other Gonzaga stakeholders and continue to build upon Fr. Spitzer’s remarkable legacy. In fall 2009, Gonzaga enrolled its largest freshman class ever, more than 1,200 students, bringing the university overall enrollment to more than 7,500. While continued success in all ways is important to McCulloh, sustaining and reinforcing the mission of Gonzaga as a Jesuit, Catholic and humanistic institution is fundamental to him. “We, as a community, are going to be led first and foremost by our University Mission, which unites us and allows us to remain focused and faithful to the charge that has been given to all of us,” McCulloh said. “Our fundamental mission is to educate men and women in an environment that is both academically rigorous and distinctively Jesuit, Catholic, and humanistic.” McCulloh knows that environment well. He spent three years here as an undergraduate, earning his bachelor’s degree in psychology, before moving on to Oxford University to earn a doctorate in experimental social psychology. He returned to Gonzaga in 1990 and has held numerous positions – and worked on many projects – over the past 19 years. These include service as interim academic vice president, vice president for administration and planning, associate academic vice president, and dean of student financial services, among others. Gonzaga is ingrained in him. “Gonzaga is our life in a lot of ways,” said McCulloh, who
with wife Julie (BA ’92, MBA ’97, Gonzaga’s dean of admission), has three daughters. “The way we choose to work and live is with an understanding that it’s not merely ‘a job.’ We feel we are participating in something really important. It’s great to be a part of it, and it’s why we feel at home at Gonzaga. It’s hard to draw a sharp distinction between our private life and our life at Gonzaga, as there is an awful lot that we share, as a family, in common with others who work here. “I came to Gonzaga to get a college education, and what brought me back as an employee was the awareness that this place is about transforming women and men who have unique gifts and talents, and come from all different experiences. Here we ask students to focus on important life questions, and we challenge them to think about what they want to do with their lives that will be of benefit to their fellow human beings. That’s a powerful and important endeavor in a world so desperately in need of it,” McCulloh said. Born in Los Angeles and raised in Washington, D.C. and Seattle, McCulloh attended Seattle’s Bishop Blanchet High School. Following high school, he completed a three-year enlistment as a food service sergeant in the U.S. Army. He arrived at Gonzaga in its centennial year (1986), served as a resident assistant and resident director, was president of Alpha Sigma Nu (the Jesuit honor society), and was elected student body president. He, Julie, and their three daughters are big fans of Gonzaga sports and attend home games when their schedules permit. McCulloh will serve as interim president pending the selection of a permanent Jesuit president by the Board of Trustees.
Mission Statement of Gonzaga University Gonzaga University belongs to a long and distinguished tradition of humanistic, Catholic, and Jesuit education. We are committed to preserving and developing that tradition and communicating it to our students and alumni. As humanistic, we recognize the essential role of human creativity, intelligence, and initiative in the construction of society and culture. As Catholic, we affirm the heritage which has developed through two thousand years of Christian living, theological reflection, and authentic interpretation. As Jesuit, we are inspired by the vision of Christ at work in the world, transforming it by His love, and calling men and women to work with Him in loving service of the human community. All these elements of our tradition come together within the sphere of free intellectual inquiry characteristic of a university. At Gonzaga, this inquiry is primarily focused on Western culture, within which our tradition has developed. We also believe that a knowledge of traditions and cultures different from our own draws us closer to the human family of which we are a part and makes us more aware of both the possibilities and limitations of our own heritage. Therefore, in addition to our primary emphasis on Western culture, we seek to provide for our students some opportunity to become familiar with a variety of human cultures. In the light of our own tradition and the variety of human societies, we seek to understand the world we live in. It is a world of great technological progress, scientific complexity and competing ideologies. It offers great possibilities for cooperation and interdependence, but at the same time presents us with the fact of widespread poverty, hunger, injustice, and the prospect of degeneration and destruction. We seek to provide for our students some understanding of contemporary civilization; and we invite them to reflect with us on the problems and possibilities of a scientific age, the ideological differences that separate the peoples of the world, and the rights and responsibilities that come from commitment to a free society. In this way we hope to prepare our students for an enlightened dedication to the Christian ideals of justice and peace. www.GoZags.com * www.twitter.com/GonzagaBulldogs

Gonzaga Administration Chuck Murphy
Ken Anderson Faculty Representative
Vice President Finance Chuck Murphy, vice president for finance, assumed the duties of overseeing Gonzaga University’s athletic department June 1, 2001. He replaced Harry Sladich who retired as vice president of administration and planning after nearly 40 years at the school. Murphy, however, is no stranger to Gonzaga, graduating with a BBA in accounting in 1973. After earning his CPA in 1974, he worked as an auditor for the accounting firm of Coopers and Lybrand from 197376 and as controller for the Pring Corporation from 1976-78. He joined Gonzaga University in 1978 as controller, and became vice president for finance in 1985. With Sladich’s retirement, Gonzaga President Robert J. Spitzer, S.J., re-organized the responsibilities of several of his vice presidents. In addition to overseeing athletics, Murphy is also responsible for the bookstore, controller’s office, faculty services, mail services and plant and construction. During the past 16 years, Murphy has overseen the construction of the Jundt Art Center and Museum, the Dussault and Burch Apartments, the Rosauer Center for Education, the Foley Center library and the Jepson Center for Business Administration. He was also actively involved in the expansion projects for the Herak Center for Engineering and the Martin Centre for athletics.
