GONZAGA COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL

G

ONZAGA is the oldest educational institution in the old Federal City of Washington, opening its doors to lay students in 1821 as the Washington Seminary, under the charter of Georgetown College and the direction of Father Anthony Kohlmann. The school, within sight of the Capitol and an easy carriage ride from the White house, flourished for several years. On one famous occasion, President John Quincy Adams came to Commencement and examined the boys in Latin and Greek. However, the school had no endowment, and the rules and regulations of the Society of Jesus did not allow the school to charge tuition. Since tuition was necessary to keep the school open, the Jesuits left in 1827. Although the rules against charging tuition were changed just a few years later, the Jesuits did not return until 1848. The Seminary was instantly successful, and the next year, President Zachary Taylor was present at commencement, a sure sign of the school’s good standing. In May 1858, President James Buchanan signed an Act of Congress that changed the name to Gonzaga College and granted the school a Federal charter. Gonzaga was indeed a college, and actually conferred some bachelor’s degrees before phasing out the baccalaureate program by 1900. The school moved to its present location, North Capitol and Eye Street, NW, in 1871, to be near Saint Al’s, which the Jesuits had built in 1859. The school occupied space that had been a former orphanage (this accounts for the strange shape of some of the classrooms). Renamed Kohlmann Hall, this building housed the Jesuit community as well as the high school. The move was nearly disastrous; so few people lived in the area that enrollment dropped precipitously, leading to real questions about the school’s survival. The neighborhood gradually expanded, with new homes appearing in what had been fields. The number of students applying to Gonzaga increased, and by its 75th anniversary, the school was ready to expand. The campus expanded with the 1896 dedication of Gonzaga College Hall, which today houses the oldest continually operating theatre in Washington, D.C. A magnificent addition, it still preserves all the scene-changing equipment from that era, and is a virtual museum of theater in its own right. In 1912, Cardinal Gibbons presided over opening ceremonies of the new “Main Building,” now known as Dooley Hall. The façade, matching the theatre, provided a stately image in the busy neighborhood traffic of Eye Street. This began a long period of peace and stability for Gonzaga. The surrounding area became solidly Irish Catholic, bringing prosperity to school and parish alike. The school’s curriculum was based on the universal Jesuit

4 / 2015-2016 GONZAGA ICE HOCKEY PROGRAM

plan of ratio studiorum, found in every Jesuit school in the world. Emphasizing the classics, the curriculum followed a logical progression of studies. Large numbers of Jesuits taught, and there were few lay teachers. Tuition remained at less than $200 per year until 1956. By the early 1960s, Gonzaga’s neighborhood changed, and inner city tensions escalated. When Saint Al’s parochial school closed, the building was taken over by Gonzaga and is now Cantwell Hall. When the city erupted in riots in 1968, fires burned all around the campus, but the church and school were spared. Soon after those riots, however, a bleak period followed in which enrollment dropped and the school once again, began to fail. By the early 1970s, there were serious discussions around closing Gonzaga, or moving its location to the suburbs. Instead, the Maryland Province of Jesuits declared its total commitment to Gonzaga as a school part of and serving the inner city. Positive steps to save the school soon followed, including the dedication of Buchanan Field, Gonzaga’s first home athletic field in 1974, and the addition of the Carmody gym three years later. The 1980s saw the addition of Forte Hall and incorporating Arupe Hall (the building that houses the Academy of Notre Dame) to the campus. Much of this activity and revitalization was directed under the watchful eye of Father Bernard Dooley, Gonzaga’s president for 20 years, who died in 2006. His tenure was capped with the magnificent restoration of the Great Church of Saint Aloysius. Today, Gonzaga has its largest student body ever and is physically as well as financially sound. In recent years, the school has again substantially updated and renovated its playing fields and campus, which includes Cantwell and Ruesch Hall, a state-ofthe-art academic facility with science, music and technology centers. Its location, which twice in the past appeared to seriously threaten the school’s continued existence, is one of the primary reasons for its success. Throughout the years, Gonzaga has reaffirmed a deep commitment to Jesuit education, and it has chosen to do so in the heart of the inner city, on a street shared with leaders of business and government, and on a block where it ministers to the least fortunate in society. This commitment to remain in the city, to be in media res, at the heart of things, has enabled Gonzaga students to understand the meaning of being Men for Others. A Wall Street Journal editorial referred to the school as “the premier Catholic high school of Washington.” Its excellent academic program and the fervor of its spirit make it a special place indeed. Ad Majorem dei Gloriam.

HEAD COACH/ TEAM CAPTAINS

1994-1995 12-2-1

Ed McGonagle, HC Chris Connolly (C)

Both the team and the program made impressive strides this season. In its third season, Gon¬zaga added two JV teams. Varsity gave DeMatha “the biggest scare of the season.” The game was described as a “meeting of two area hockey powerhouses.” JV Purple went 8-2; its only two losses were to DeMatha. Purple played in the championship game against DeMatha, losing 3-2.

1993-1994 12-3

Ed McGonagle, HC Eric Bovim (C)

Varsity posted its first winning season, losing only to DeMatha and Landon, and beating Good Counsel three times. The Eagles finished third in the championships. The team scored 82 goals and only allowed 36 goals. Gonzaga hosted the first National Capital Hockey Tournament, known as the “Purple Puck.” Landon won the tournament; Gonzaga was the runner-up.

1992-1993 4-5-1

Ed McGonagle, HC Eric Bovim (C) David Copp (C)

Fort Dupont Ice Arena is proud to be the home ice rink for the Gonzaga Ice Hockey Team!

I

n addition to serving as home ice for many of the area’s finest youth hockey clubs, Fort Dupont Ice Arena is also home of the Kids On Ice program, celebrating its 10th Anniversary— quite an achievement. Since our humble beginning in 1996, we have grown incredibly, from serving fewer than 100 kids to more than 10,000 kids annually. But, there’s still more work to do. Your support goes directly to fund this and the other many free programs and classes we offer to the youth of our community, many of whom have little else to look forward to. Please help us by making a tax-deductible financial contribution so our Kids On Ice programs can continue without interruption. You will be helping many children by your generosity: • • • • •

Your gift of $500 can sponsor a school group skating class, including bus transportation; $250 can sponsor a school group skating class that does not need transportation; $100 can sponsor an individual child in a 10-week skating class; $50 can provide hockey and speed skating equipment we are lacking; $25 can provide much needed learn to skate equipment, such as gloves and helmets.

But more important than the amount is your participation—so please send whatever you can to help us keep our programs going. Donations can be found in the brochure rack in the lobby of the rink, or you can make a secure credit card donation on our web site, www.fdia.org. We will send you a thank you receipt for tax purposes. Did you know • Fort Dupont Ice Arena is operated by a nonprofit organization, Friends of Fort Dupont Ice Arena? • That half of Fort Dupont’s annual budget is met through donated funds from people like you who want to help share the love of skating sports? • That while the Fort Dupont Ice Arena is a federally owned facility, we do not regularly receive government funding for our programs or for facility maintenance?

HOCKEY FOR OTHERS

W

e are both proud and fortunate to be part of a Jesuit school. We have faith in Gonzaga’s mission and the opportunities it affords our sons, and want to do what we can to be an “ally in the cause of Jesuit education” by helping local organizations that we think support Jesuit ideals. We highlight three special programs.

FRIENDS OF FORT DUPONT

www.fdia.org ort Dupont Ice Arena is the home ice for Gonzaga Hockey, as well as a number of other high school and college programs. Owned by the National Park Service, the arena is the only public indoor ice rink in the city of Washington. Friends of Fort Dupont Ice Arena, Inc. (FOFD) is the nonprofit organization formed to manage and revitalize the rink, located in southeast Washington, DC. In addition to managing the ice arena, FOFD oversees a community skating program which serves over 10,000 neighborhood boys and girls each year. Kids On Ice (KOI) has grown to include elementary and advanced figure skating, instructional ice hockey and, most recently, speed skating. Additionally, KOI offers free skating opportunities to students from 5 to 18 at more than a dozen District of Columbia elementary, middle, and secondary schools. KOI participants receive free admission to sessions held during school days, weekday evenings and weekends. Skates are provided, as is hockey and speed skating equipment for those enrolled in those programs. Instructors include qualified volunteers supervised by professional figure skating, ice hockey and speed skaters. Many area skaters—including local high school ice hockey players—serve as volunteer assistant instructors. During the summer months, the rink administers youth skating “camps” in cooperation with the District of Columbia Department of Parks and Recreation, local Police Boys & Girls Clubs,YMCAs and other East-of-the-River youth organizations. Many of FOFD programs are free or extremely affordable to encourage community participation.

F

GONZAGA HOCKEY STUDY BUDDIES

T

he Gonzaga Hockey Program is continuing our Gonzaga tradition of Men For Others in support of the Ft. DuPont community. Gonzaga Hockey Study Buddies is an afterschool tutoring and mentoring program which partners Gonzaga hockey players with the children in the Fort Dupont community. With the collaboration, and direction from the Fort Dupont staff and the Gonzaga’s Director of Christian services, Sr. Seton Cuneen, Gonzaga parents, and community school leaders, the program runs weekly at Fort Dupont Ice Arena classrooms. The Gonzaga Hockey Study Buddies program provides enrichment to local Cornerstone School 4th-6th grade students every Monday afternoon before practice from November-April. Our Gonzaga Hockey players have volunteered their time before practices, to tutor and spend time with the children. Gonzaga families donate snacks, and 58 / 2015-2016 GONZAGA ICE HOCKEY PROGRAM

the sessions are individualized for the needs of each student. The relationships between the students and their mentors are reinforced every week by 1:1 sessions working on homework assignments, reading, tossing around a ball, or sharing jokes and stories that our young men do so intuitively and makes this program a true example of our Men for Others spirit. The admiration and respect of all the mentors and students with each other is unmistakable to all, making this a sought-after program for the players and local students.

USA WARRIORS ICE HOCKEY PROGRAM

www.usawarriorshockey.org • www.facebook.com/usawarriors The USA Warriors Ice Hockey Program was founded in 2008 and is designed to give military members and veterans who have been injured or disabled in the course of their service the chance to play ice hockey in an environment that is suited to their needs. The program supplies injured service and disabled men and women with hockey equipment and trains them in the skills needed to use the sport of ice hockey as a rehabilitation tool to overcome both physical and mental disabilities sustained in defense of the United States of America. The goals of the USA Warriors Ice Hockey Program are to: • Educate, train, and motivate injured, ill and disabled service members and veterans to participate in the sport of ice hockey adapted to their abilities • Offer the game of hockey as a means of developing self-confidence, self-reliance, and concentration for those injured in service, and to assist them in rebuilding the mainstream lifestyles and sense of normalcy they were accustomed to prior to their disability • Integrate people with disabilities with people without disabilities in order to promote awareness of challenges and to encourage teambuilding • Encourage the formation of “USA Warrior Hockey Programs” locally and nationally • Educate the general public about adaptive sports and USA Warriors Ice Hockey and to promote societal awareness of the sacrifices participants made in defense of our Nation. Gonzaga Hockey proud offers our time and donations to this incredibly inspiring group of men and women. We have participated in charity hockey game supporting Wounded Warriors Program and USA Warriors Hockey Team, provide in kind donations for USA Warrriors events, and of greatest value, our Gonzaga players have participated with the team for on-ice practices with standing and sled teams. It is an honor and privilege for Gonzaga Hockey to support our friends at

USA Warriors Hockey Team.
