GONZAGA HOCKEY

CONTENTS

A PROGRAM AS LARGE AS GONZAGA HOCKEY can’t function without a massive effort to raise the necessary funds and get everyone where they need to be – from Philadelphia to Chicago, the kickoff meeting to the end of season banquet, and everywhere in between. Thanks to those who donated money, time and baked goods, made repeated Costco runs, hauled cases of water up the steps at the Fort or plated hundreds of pizza slices at football games. Coaches, trainers, student managers, team parents, bus drivers, volunteers, corporate sponsors and cheering fans – each one played a part in the success of Gonzaga Hockey this season. ONE TEAM, ONE FAMILY is not just a motto – it’s the absolute truth. Thank you.

fter a two-year pandemic hiatus, the National Capital Hockey Tournament returned to Fort Dupont for the 28th time. Joined by teams from Illinois, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia, all three Gonzaga teams enjoyed the competition, with JV and V2 taking on the Varsity division and V1 welcoming rivals in the Prep division. JV came in third of six teams, while V1 played some great games and came in second place with a 3-1-1 record. V2 went undefeated and won the Varsity division for the third straight time (2018, 2019, 2022). It was a massive team effort to host many out-of-town guests during the week between Christmas and New Year’s. Many thanks to longtime tournament host John Cotten, announcer Jarrod Wronski, and all who made it a great success.

Founded in 1821, Gonzaga College High School is a Catholic college preparatory school for boys in grades 9-12. Drawing its inspiration from the spiritual vision of St. Ignatius Loyola and the apostolic and educational tradition of the Jesuits, Gonzaga offers a values-oriented and academically challenging curriculum to young men of diverse backgrounds from all over the Washington area. At Gonzaga, athletics play a major role in the lives of our students, as it is through healthy competition that they develop leadership, teamwork, and discipline. Athletics help fulfill the Jesuit ideals of developing the whole person, nurturing human excellence, and seeing beyond oneself to become Men for Others.

President Rev. Joseph E. Lingan, S.J. ‘75 Headmaster Mr. Thomas K. Every II

Gonzaga Hockey prepares young men for the challenges and Athletic Director responsibilities they will face throughout their lives. Our Joe Reyda program has evolved since its inaugural 1992-93 season, when it was one of 12 teams in the Maryland Scholastic Assistant Athletic Director Hockey League (MSHL), where students competed and Terry Kernan excelled in the Junior Varsity and Varsity divisions for 15 seasons. In the 2004-05 season, Gonzaga won the Private School Championship (PSC) for the first time, then successfully defended the PSC in 200506 and 2006-07, becoming the first school in league history to win the championship three consecutive years. Gonzaga now competes in the Mid-Atlantic Prep Hockey League (MAPHL). It consists of teams from the WCAC, IAC, and MIAA conferences and delivers the best high school hockey competition in the area.

GONZAGA HOCKEY

Gonzaga Hockey players have gone on to play various levels of hockey including NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, ACHA Division I, USA Hockey National Team Development Program, USHL Tier I Juniors, Tier II Juniors, NAHL, and Prep School programs. Gonzaga is without a doubt one of the premier high school hockey programs in the Washington Metropolitan area and is led by second year head coach Kyle Sennott.

GONZAGA DAY@ St. JOE’s

O

or most people, the day after Thanksgiving usually means turkey sandwiches, but for Gonzaga Hockey, it means the annual pilgrimage to the Class of 1923 rink at the University of Pennsylvania where St. Joe’s Prep rolls out the red carpet. Two buses rolled up 95 North, followed by family members in cars or on Amtrak, eager to enjoy a great day of hockey. V2 and JV secured convincing wins while V1 had a close 2-1 loss. A great day for the entire Gonzaga Hockey family, and many thanks to St. Joe’s for their unfailing hospitality.

n November 3rd, Gonzaga Hockey held the 8th Annual Dominik Pettey Memorial Purple & White game, to honor Dominik Pettey ’15, who passed away in a tragic car accident in 2014. With his parents Pat & Magda in attendance as always, the game served as a wonderful kickoff to the season, and a reminder to emulate Dom’s devotion to faith, family, and friends. Although his number 11 is retired, Dom is known, admired, and emulated by all who have come after him. More than $55,000 was raised for The Dominik Pettey Scholarship, which makes a Gonzaga education possible for a student who would not otherwise be able to afford it.

GONZAGA HOCKEY

AFTER SEEING A FRIEND PLAY HOCKEY AT FIVE years old, Austin immediately wanted to start playing. As he grew older, he realized that this sport was one he could do well in due to his size and athletic abilities. Not playing travel until age 12, Austin struggled to find his place on a team until Covid hit and he was able to play Reston Raiders AA. The second season of playing, his team came second in the EJEPL and first in the CBHL and took a hard loss in states playoffs. He was a top scorer and led his team with multiple game winning goals. This same season, he skipped V2 and moved from JV to V1. His accomplishments over the years between Reston and Gonzaga have brought him the best memories and lifelong friends, something he’s extremely grateful for. His favorite memories were playing in Chicago his junior year and proving to his family and friends that despite his late move to travel, he was still able to find a place on both club and Gonzaga teams. He also loved how his mom would buy him sushi after each 6 a.m. game that he scored a hat trick in when he played on the Reston house hockey teams.

18

“Gonzaga has shown me that it’s impossible to thrive without friends and family. The brotherhood built through the program helped me feel like I belonged during Junior year while knowing nobody on the team. I couldn’t be more grateful for my team.”

RYAN STARTED SKATING AT FOUR YEARS OLD, and he has been a continuous member of the Reston Raiders from their IP program until this year as member of the 18UAA Blue team. In addition to the lifelong friendships that he made playing with the Raiders, Ryan has made substantial contributions to many championship teams. Winning hockey games has always been Ryan’s passion, and he’s been part of a number of championship teams: 12U UA CBHL, 14U AA EJEPL, 14U AA Virginia State, 16U AA CBHL regular season and playoff champions, as well as winning the Purple Puck tournament as a freshman on V2. His Gonzaga career was interrupted by Covid, but he’s looking forward to continuing Gonzaga hockey’s tradition of excellence by working towards a MAPHL championship this year and mentoring teammates in how special it is to be a part of the Gonzaga hockey family.

“Being a part of the Gonzaga Hockey family has led to some of my favorite moments throughout my career. I remember the thrill and excitement of the Purple/White games every year, getting to play with my fellow teammates and brothers. I am excited to play my senior year with the boys I have grown to love like family.”

NICK BEGAN PLAYING HOCKEY WHEN HE WAS six years old. It was his dream to play Gonzaga hockey with his older brother, Luke. He was fortunate to play one season together on V1 with Luke! Nick started out with the Montgomery Blue Devils, then went on to play for Team Maryland. Nick grew as a player, teammate and person on the V1 team. He loved playing at the “Fort“ during his four years at Gonzaga. Go Eagles. Fly High!

“’The Fort’ has become my home over the past four years. The friendships I have made will go far beyond graduation. I will cherish my hockey teammates. Special thanks to my parents for always having my back. One Team, One Family.”

STEFAN STARTED PLAYING HOCKEY WHEN HE was 11 years old. After many years playing soccer, he developed a love for hockey while playing for the Montgomery Blue Devils culminating in a trip to Silver Stick Nationals in 2022. From his freshman season playing with JV, and scoring twice to beat Prep, to his senior year with V2, Stefan will always cherish his time playing hockey at Gonzaga. He has also been a four-year player with the Gonzaga Soccer program, captaining the team during the undefeated 2022 season. Stefan received the Mike Kelleher Scholar-Athlete Award in late 2022. He would like to thank Coaches Sennott, King, and Guinan for giving him the opportunity to wear the purple and white for Gonzaga and his teammates for the many memories on and off the ice.

My time playing hockey at Gonzaga was unique and special. Suiting up with my brothers is something I will never forget. I am very grateful to the program for all the memories. Hail Purp!

JOHN INHERITED HIS LOVE FOR HOCKEY FROM his Canadian roots where he descends from a long line of hockey players who played in both minor and major leagues. John learned to skate on the frozen ponds in Manitoba, Canada, and always loves a good game of pond hockey. He started playing organized hockey with NOVA Ice Dogs when he was five years old. He joined St. James hockey in high school where he played on multiple winning teams. His most memorable time as a Gonzaga Eagle was playing center under Coach King where the team brought home the MAPHL cup to the Fort.

22

“My love for Gonzaga hockey began in the 3rd grade while watching my oldest brother play. I was at the Purple-White game after Dom’s tragic accident, and realized that being a Gonzaga hockey player is a brotherhood. I’ll never forget the friendships and memories created these past four years. Carpools to and from The Fort, the Chicago trip, rivalry games, and hanging out off the ice are some of the most memorable times with my teammates. Gonzaga hockey will forever be a part of my life and I will cherish this time I have shared with my brothers for the past four years. Hail Gonzaga!”

MEDIA GUIDE 2022- 23

GONZAGA HOCKEY

“It is an honor and privilege to represent Gonzaga as an Eagle and to play such high caliber hockey with a wonderful group of guys. I learned many valuable lessons both on and off the ice from playing hockey with Gonzaga – such as the importance of tenacity, grit, teamwork – all of which I will apply going forward in my life. I love my Gonzaga hockey brothers and am very grateful to be a part of this family.”

WILL BEGAN PLAYING HOCKEY AT SIX YEARS old at Rockville Ice Arena. He quickly advanced through the Montgomery Blue Devils house program to play on several upper level select and travel teams before coming to Gonzaga. While playing on the Gonzaga V2 team his freshman year, he also played for his MYHA travel team. Will has played on the Eagles V1 teams for his junior and senior years. He has achieved the MAPHL All-Academic Player award each year. Will also plays Varsity lacrosse for Gonzaga. In college, Will plans study business and maybe play on a club hockey or lacrosse team.

23

COLLIN WAS INTRODUCED TO HOCKEY BY HIS Grandpa “Bear” at age five. Bear took Collin through the Instructional and Atoms seasons with Montgomery hockey until Collin’s dad decided to take up hockey and coach him at Chevy Chase Club. Collin enjoyed many years of playing in the Chevy hockey program. In addition to the hot chocolates, Collin’s favorite thing about Chevy hockey was that it was only a mile from his house. He was honored to join the Eagles JV team as a freshman and moved on to V2 for the rest of his Gonzaga years. Collin was blessed to have Coach Bryan King’s leadership his entire Gonzaga hockey career and was proud to be a part of the V2 20212022 Championship season.

24

“As a freshman, I felt honored to wear a Gonzaga hockey jersey for the first time and knew it would be a special experience. Nothing beats the bond of the Gonzaga brotherhood, especially among the hockey players. I’m incredibly grateful for all the friendships over the past four years. The drives to the Fort will never be forgotten, along with the memories of Captain skates, Purple Puck, St. Joe’s Prep trip, and Purple & White games. I’ve enjoyed every moment of my Gonzaga hockey journey and want to thank my coaches and parents for supporting me. Fort’s purple!”

GONZAGA HOCKEY

“Some of my best moments in my Gonzaga career have been through hockey. It has always been such a memorable experience for me and has taught me what it means to be a part of a team that is a family. I love all the coaches and teammates I have made friendships with over my four years and will never forget winning the V2 championship.”

ALEX’S INTRODUCTION TO HOCKEY CAME MUCH later than most after many years of travel soccer. Immediately sold on the game, he quickly traded his cleats for skates. He has played for many teams, including Reston Raiders and North American Alliance. He has spent the last three years as a defenseman at Team Maryland, where he currently plays U18 AAA. At Gonzaga, he played V2 as a freshman and V1 in both his Junior and Senior year. As a senior, he was honored to Captain the Purple/White game and is looking forward to an AA MAPHL win to bring the cup back home to Gonzaga and make “The Fort” purple again. He appreciates all the hard work and dedication of all those involved in helping to make the Gonzaga hockey program so memorable and successful. He hopes to continue his hockey career in juniors and college.

25

CHASE WAS INTRODUCED TO HOCKEY AT THE early age of four years old. He often saw an older neighborhood boy rollerblading with his hockey stick and Reston Raiders jersey. One day, the neighbor saw Chase and stopped to talk with him. He saw Chase’s fascination with hockey and showed him how to play and gave Chase a stick. That was it, Chase practiced relentlessly in the driveway and a year later was playing for the Reston Raiders. He has enjoyed hockey ever since, but really enjoys the team aspect and camaraderie of the sport. Many of his friendships were formed on various hockey teams over the years.

26

“My favorite Gonzaga Hockey memories are making V1 as a freshman; how the upper classmen welcomed me that first year; riding to practices and games with Luca Docking; team dinners at the Garners, being selected as a Captain junior and senior years; playing ice & roller hockey with Farrell Dinn, TJ Kouba, Peter Pirone, Davis Carpenter, Alex Mavris and Nicky Garner. I have an incredible sense of pride every time I step on the ice with AMDG on my back. I will cherish my time on the ice with my brothers and the memories made while wearing Purple and White.”

GONZAGA HOCKEY

“Some of my best memories were formed playing Gonzaga hockey, whether it was driving the boys to practice or messing around with the team in Chicago. A memory I will never forget is winning the MAPHL championship my junior year with Coach KING. What started off as my teammates soon became my brothers throughout my years at Gonzaga.”

AIDAN BEGAN PLAYING MITE HOCKEY AS A seven year old when a neighbor quit playing and he inherited his gear. He started with the NOVA Ice Dogs travel team and a core group of ‘04 neighborhood boys that continue to be some of his best friends. As his love for the game grew and competition level increased, he left NOVA to play AA hockey with the Potomac Patriots for two years. At the urging of his U14 coach he tried out and made the Washington Little Caps U15 team and has been playing for WLC the past four years. Aidan chose to go to Gonzaga after attending the Dominik Pettey ‘15 Memorial Purple White Game as an 8th grader. He was inspired by the brotherhood he witnessed and the program’s winning tradition. Aidan started playing V1 as a freshman and was honored to be selected as an Assistant Captain, the Offensive MVP and WCAC All Conference Second Team his junior year. He is proud to lead the team again as a Captain during the 2022-23 season and grateful to be part of the Gonzaga Hockey legacy.

27

MATEO STARTED PLAYING HOCKEY WHEN HE was seven years old. He immediately fell in love with the sport and participated in clinics, summer camps, group sessions, and stick and shoots. He began to play travel hockey with Capitals Academy at the age of 10 and found great success across five seasons there. Gonzaga fueled his passion for hockey. He was awarded with the JV Most Improved Player Award his freshman year, and after winning the MAPHL Championship with V2 his junior year he was named V2 Offensive Player of the Year. During the offseason going into senior year, he got the opportunity to debut with the Argentine Men’s National Ice Hockey Team, becoming one of the youngest players to play for the Division I team. Mateo hopes to stay involved with hockey in the future and play for the University of Chicago.

“Being able to represent Gonzaga the past four years has been one of the highlights of my hockey career. Winning the V2 MAPHL championship junior year after a nearly undefeated season was very special. I’ll always remember going undefeated against St. Joe’s, beating Georgetown Prep with JV, and “Miami” by Will Smith playing in the locker room after wins. I am very grateful for the time I have spent with my teammates and coaches. Hail Gonzaga!”

LUKE FOUND HIS LOVE FOR HOCKEY, AS MANY local youths have during the Ovechkin era, through the Washington Capitals. When he was seven years old, Luke, better known as “Sully,” started playing street hockey in the neighborhood, which eventually led to his first pair of ice skates. He handed his passion for hockey to his little sisters, who continue to wear his number on their travel teams. Luke played for Montgomery youth hockey before coming to Gonzaga. He has been fortunate to play on the JV, V2, and V1 teams. He won the hockey Eagle Award his freshman year and was Captain of the 2021-2022 V2 team that won the MAPHL championship.

“I will never forget my years playing Gonzaga hockey. I have met great friends and have been coached by incredible men. Gonzaga hockey coaches teach you more than the game of hockey, and I am forever grateful for their mentorship. My favorite Gonzaga hockey memory is seeing the joy in Coach King’s eyes as I handed him the MAPHL championship trophy. You deserved it, Coach!”

JACK STARTED PLAYING HOCKEY AFTER spending too many hours in the stands watching his sister skate. Through hockey he has met lifelong friends, traveled throughout the United States and Europe, and played at the AA level. Nothing can compare to the brotherhood of playing for Gonzaga and winning the MAPHL Championship his junior year. He is looking forward to one last year as an Eagle and would not trade one minute of his time in the net for anything.

MEDIA GUIDE 2022- 23

“Gonzaga Hockey has helped me build so many great friendships. I will never forget all the great times, from carpooling to the Fort for practice, listening to music with the team before a game, and roaming the city on the Chicago trip. My relationships with my teammates and coaches are ones I wish to keep forever, and my four years of high school would not have been the same without Gonzaga hockey. Thank you for making my time at Gonzaga so memorable.”

GONZAGA HOCKEY

“Playing hockey has been the highlight of my time at Gonzaga. From day one as a freshman, I could feel how welcoming and supportive the Gonzaga hockey family is. I will always remember my time playing for Gonzaga, especially winning the championship my junior year, going on the trip to Chicago and the yearly trips to Philly to play St. Joe’s.”

CHARLIE ATTENDED HIS FIRST HOCKEY GAME when he was six years old, and Ovechkin scored a hat trick against the Penguins. Hooked on the game, Charlie began playing the next season with the Caps youth hockey program and in the garage every morning and afternoon with his younger brother. He then moved on to play house and travel hockey for Chevy Chase. As a freshman, Charlie won the MVP award on the JV squad. As a Junior, Charlie played for V2 and was an Assistant Captain. His favorite Gonzaga hockey memory is being on the ice for the game-winning goal in the 2022 MAPHL A Championship. Charlie is looking forward to playing club hockey next year in college.

A Q&A with Gonzaga’s own Duante’ Abercrombie ‘05

My mom sending me to Gonzaga truly changed the course of my life. It allowed me to see the world in a way that I never would have seen it, and I am forever grateful not only to her but the people at Gonzaga for not only allowing me to go there but providing me with financial aid because we couldn’t afford it. Thanks to all the donors and everyone who has given in the past because it allowed a person like me to go from Northeast Washington, DC to Toronto, coaching the Toronto Maple Leafs. That’s amazing.

GONZAGA HOCKEY

TOP RIGHT: Duante’ with his mother, Devara Abercrombie

DUANTE’ ABERCROMBIE GOT HIS START PLAYING HOCKEY AT FORT DUPONT, MENTORED BY LEGENDARY COACH NEAL HENDERSON. A PLAYER AND COACH AT GONZAGA, HE PLAYED PROFESSIONALLY IN NEW ZEALAND, PENNSYLVANIA, AND NEW YORK, AND COACHED AT GEORGETOWN PREP, LITTLE CAPS U18 AAA AND STEVENSON UNIVERSITY (D3) BEFORE GETTING THE CALL TO THE NHL. HE SERVES AS COACHING DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATE WITH THE TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS HOCKEY CLUB, AND WORKS WITH ALL THREE TEAMS IN THE ORGANIZATION, THE TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS (NHL), TORONTO MARLIES (AHL) AND THE NEWFOUNDLAND GROWLERS (ECHL). HE WAS FEATURED IN THE RECENT NHL YOU TUBE SERIES ‘NHL BOUND.’

Please tell us about your early days playing hockey at the Fort. I loved walking up those stairs at the Fort. I went to practice a lot, it was phenomenal. Coach Neal Henderson was there with a warm hug every Monday and Wednesday night. He looked like us, but he was different from everybody we came in contact with when it came to black men in Washington, DC. He led by example. He talked about education openly; he talked about the struggles that he had to go through openly. He believed in you all the time. He wasn’t there

to talk you down; he was there to build you up. Constantly. It’s all he does with anybody. I owe him my life. Coach Neal Henderson showed me how to be a man, but better yet, he showed me how to be a respectable Black man who brings benefit to the world. How did your time at Gonzaga shape who you are today? I did a shadow day during my eighth-grade year, and there was just something about Gonzaga. The fact that they had a hockey team was big for me – although

Who are some of your mentors? My grandfather worked on the magazine at National Geographic, but he literally started in the mailroom. He worked his way up and accomplished so much – coming from West Virginia, having run-ins with the KKK and other challenges growing up was really inspiring, and that rubbed off on my mom, my aunts, my entire family. My mom graduated from Howard University and did whatever she could to see that I had the ability to go to good schools. I didn’t have to look very far for my inspiration or motivation. In 2014, I met Graeme Townshend, the first Jamaican born player in the NHL. He played for the Bruins and the Islanders, he coached for the San Jose Sharks and the Toronto Maple Leafs. He is a major mentor and a second dad to me, and now I get to wear the same logo that he once did. It’s incredible. He’s the first person who told me he knew I could coach in the NHL. You’ve also been a mentor to many – including our very own Coach Bryan King. I’ve known Bryan King since before he was 10. He grew up down the street – he’s like a little brother to me. I am so proud of the man and coach he’s become since he joined the Gonzaga coaching staff several years ago; coaching at Gonzaga has made him an even better human being. I was in attendance when V2 won the MAPHL in March 2022. I made sure I was there, I gave him a massive hug afterward, we got pictures, I sat right next to his mom. He was at my wedding – he is family. I am extremely proud of him.

What is your advice for current and future Gonzaga players? Whatever you’re doing, while you’re doing it, be fully invested. It’s really hard to juggle many different things – if you’re in class, focus on class, if you’re at practice, focus on practice, if you’re playing a game, focus on the game. Get rid of frivolous things that suck away your potential – just drop them. There’s nothing wrong with having escapes, but when they start to steal your potential and you allow it to – Snapchat, TikTok, staying up super late, whatever – you’re also allowing them to steal your future. If you say that you want to become a doctor, or you say you want to become the President of the United States or whatever it is, but your actions don’t actually map to those aspirations, then you’re lying to yourself. There’s nothing wrong with saying, “I want to do this.” If you want to be elite, if you want to be exceptional, your habits have to be the same and it’s not easy. If you want to be a unicorn, you’ve got to roll with unicorns. Find them. They are there.

Growing up playing next to Duante’ with the Fort Dupont Cannons and watching him play for Gonzaga, I always knew that he would be something special. I also knew that he would add value to the game of hockey in whatever capacity he would be in. — Coach Bryan King If you’re at Gonzaga – a lot of people claim to be or will become high flyers; surround yourself with those individuals. ‘Show me your friends, I’ll show you your future’ – that adage is very, very true. When it comes to succeeding at Gonzaga, be fully invested, fully involved, and run in the right circles. There’s peer pressure, but then there’s also doing the right thing. What makes a player enjoyable to coach? It’s someone who has a love for sport, but even greater is their love for the opportunity to compete. I really think that if you’re not trying, you’re dying. To wake up every single day and attack what it is that the world has for you. Coachability is being thirsty to learn, but also knowing how to learn from experience, not always having to be told what to do, not always coming up asking the same question over and over again.

There was just something about the Gonzaga brotherhood. We went through 9/11, the DC snipers – we went through some things together as a school that galvanized us. Gonzaga is a special place; you didn’t have to go in and be anything other than yourself. Teachers and coaches really pushed you to be your best.

From Fort Dupont to Toronto via Eye Street: #NHLBOUND

they weren’t a powerhouse until we got there! We won four championships during my time there – one as a player and three as a coach.

On the ice with the Eagles

As a coach, character for sure is number one. You won’t get in the door especially at the NHL level if you don’t have good character. But once you get past that, competitiveness is number two for me. Duante’ with son Patrick and Coach Henderson

I truly think it’s about overall enjoyment. We play 82 games in the season at the NHL level, not to mention playoffs and a hopeful Stanley Cup run, that’s a lot. It’s a lot of time to spend around each other, so somebody that’s willing to be open about their life, who can talk about things that happen at home or in the world – it’s not just hockey all the time – there’s something about having a smile on your face and enjoying it because any second it could be over. Enjoy it while you’re in it, don’t make it tedious, make it fun.

GONZAGA HOCKEY

What do you value the most in your players and your teammates? Character for sure. You have to be a good person. But when it comes to their playing style, they don’t like to lose. They’re not a sore loser and they compete for every inch of whatever playing field it is. If it’s on the ice and somebody steals the puck, they’re right on top of it. Competitiveness is huge, I don’t think it’s coached enough, I don’t think it’s talked about enough. You want to run this play or that play, you can’t do that if you don’t possess the puck. You want to dangle? Why? Because you want to be the best or because you want to show off?

This is Gonzaga Hockey’s 30th anniversary – what do you hope for the next 30 years? I want it to continue to impact the community, impact the lives of the individuals who come through the program and those who come in contact with or experience the program. How do we develop better players, character-wise? How do we embody better sportsmanship among our parents and coaches? How do we show the community, in a greater way, that we’re here to support them and we thrive with their support? To me that’s the next step for Gonzaga. Once Fort Dupont is renovated, filling the stands with public school students or the local community and inviting players to come out and talk to kids. Giving everything you have to the team and to the community is a true statement for Gonzaga hockey. I believe that it’s going to be a community enriching program through hockey and showing people in that neighborhood what excellence truly looks like. It’s not about flashy cars and a lot of money. Excellence is taking care of your neighbors and taking care of the people around you and helping everyone else be better while you also improve yourself.
