Remembering John McLaughlin The Gonzaga Fathers Club and the Gonzaga DC Classic Tournament Committee fondly remember Tournament co-founder John McLaughlin who passed away in September 2023. John was the driving force behind the Tournament, and he watched it grow in size and scope over the last 30 plus years. John’s vision and leadership helped the Gonzaga DC Classic blossom to become one of the preeminent high school basketball tournaments in the country. Throughout the decades, John never lost sight of the mission of the Tournament which was to support the goals of good basketball, fellowship among teams and players, citizenship and community service. These goals were embodied in the Tournament’s motto, “Great Basketball Supporting Good Works.” Indeed, for many, John McLaughlin was the Gonzaga DC Classic. Over 30 years ago, John McLaughlin and Mike Kelleher and a few other Gonzaga dads began working to create a Gonzaga basketball tournament which was later named the “Gonzaga DC Classic Basketball Tournament.” Father Bernard Dooley, Gonzaga President, approved the idea but cautioned that the Tournament would have to be sponsored and operated by the Gonzaga Fathers Club (GFC). The first Tournament was held in December 1989 with four teams over two days. The field for the initial DC Classic was DeMatha, Dunbar (Baltimore), Coolidge (DC) and Gonzaga. A Tournament Program was produced listing the roster of each team, Committee members, and advertisers with a greeting letter from Father Dooley. The Tournament sponsor would be the GFC and always remain so. The Gonzaga Athletic Department was quite helpful in making arrangements for referees, locker rooms and other necessary items. Tournament planning continued through the summer and fall of 1989. The Tournament came to fruition on December 21, 1989 and was an immediate success. Working with school officials, John and the Committee decided that Tournament funds should be used to support Gonzaga service projects in which Gonzaga students participated. Since the first Tournament, hundreds of Gonzaga dads have volunteered in operating the Tournament. That has included fathers of current students as well as past students. Each year, the Tournament provides a specially designed tee-shirt for all players as well as various items of Tournament apparel designed by members of the Tournament Committee. Some of the institutions supported by Tournament funds are: The Father McKenna Center, Gonzaga Campus Kitchen, and the Washington Jesuit Academy. Additionally, the Tournament supports Service Projects in: Apopka, Florida, Camden, New Jersey, Red Cloud Indian School, US/Mexico Border, Dominican Republic, and Quito, Ecuador.
Indeed, for many, John was the Gonzaga DC Classic. As part of John’s vision to put on a first class event, the Tournament also arranges for hotel rooms for visiting teams in some of Washington’s finest hotels and for meals for each team after its games provided free from well-known commercial establishments. The Tournament Committee seeks to make the Tournament a satisfying experience for each team with the result that many teams regularly contact us seeking to be invited to the Tournament again. It is the only nationally known High School Tournament that has always been operated by an all-volunteer force of Gonzaga men. The DC Classic combines excellent high school basketball with service to those in need. John is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Christine Tully McLaughlin; his three brothers and their spouses: Robert (Suzanne), Michael (Vera), Joseph (the late Christine); his five children and their spouses: John Joseph IV (Kathryn), Timothy Patrick (Julie Madi), Maureen Christie (Brian), Brian Tully (Gabriela), Anne Elizabeth; as well as ten grandchildren: Annika, Anjamora, John Joseph V, Colin, Tadhg, Tully, Fiadh, Isabella, Jonathan, and Isabelle Grace. During this weekend as we celebrate the 34th Annual Gonzaga DC Classic, John’s stewardship over the years has ensured that the basketball games, while good in and of themselves, serve a much higher purpose: SERVICE TO THOSE IN NEED. This has been our most important goal, i.e., serving many in important and enduring ways but receiving enriching gifts from many in important and lasting ways. We remember John for his vision, commitment, and leadership over the decades guiding the Gonzaga DC Classic Tournament to the outstanding event it is today. Thank you, John. And thank you for being a “Man for Others.”

FAMILY REFLECTIONS
From The McLAUGHLINS Long before there was a Gonzaga DC Classic, John McLaughlin lived a life dedicated to his faith, family, and community. He strived to be a “man for others” before he first heard the term. If his family, his church, or his children’s schools asked him to do it, he did it, and with gusto: parent committees and parish groups aplenty, but perhaps most prominently, coaching, for all five of his children, in multiple sports, particularly basketball, over more than 20 years.

A good coach needs to know the game well, of course, but needs to know people better. How to teach them, inspire them, and help them to work together, overcoming adversity and achieving new goals—even beyond winning a game. So when John was called to be part of the Classic, he was the perfect man for the job. With the perfect partner, too, his wife Chris. The Classic owes as much to her efforts as to John’s: she put on every reception, and she offered counsel in every major decision. It was, as they say, a team effort. In the early years of the Classic, John’s three sons were students at Gonzaga, which allowed both him and Chris to receive a Jesuit education as well, albeit vicariously. Both were taken with the idea of forming their children as “men and women for others,” and with helping in that
ences to the rest of the Tournament committee, who like him, were volunteers of their time, talent, and treasure.
As the years accrued, the meaning of the DC Classic deepened for the whole family, especially since it occurred in December, as we prepare for Christmas. The highly competitive tournament was always exciting to watch, but beyond that, the family took pride in knowing that the visiting teams’ players received a VIP introduction to the nation’s capital—many years including a White House tour—and the proceeds enabled Gonzaga students to provide direct service to people in real, sometimes desperate, need. Year after year, seeds were planted to help form more “men for others,” the kind of people our human family so desperately needs. We take comfort that Coach John’s vision and spirit will live on in this tournament, yes, and perhaps even more in the faith, family, and community it has enriched in the world.

Greetings Gonzaga DC Classic Basketball Tournament December 8 - December 10, 2023 As Mayor of Washington, DC, it is my great pleasure to greet the players, coaches, and fans of the Gonzaga DC Classic Basketball Tournament upon the 34rd annual competition that takes place here in Washington, DC! This year there are eight teams participating including DC’s Gonzaga College High School and Jackson-Reed High School. Since Gonzaga’s first tournament in 1989, this storied event has for more than three decades amassed annual excitement for residents and visiting students alike. The tournament has historically attracted competing teams from across the region, and often features teams from the nationally-ranked Top Twenty including hundreds of future college players, several NBA players, and legendary coaches. During its humble beginnings, the tournament was initially used to support the tuitions of low income students, however its meteoric success showed organizers (The Gonzaga Father’s Club) that the event could achieve an even higher purpose. A decision was subsequently made that proceeds from the tournament should instead go towards charitable causes, and so the continuing theme of “Great Basketball Supporting Good Works” was born. Since its inception, the tournament has raised over $1,000,000 in support of Gonzaga’s multiple service projects, , such as the Father McKenna Center, which for more than 20 years has responded to the needs of the homeless, including providing emergency winter shelter. Other projects include D.C. Central Kitchen and HIV/AIDS-afflicted residents of DC and to those in need across the region. To the DC Classic tournament Chairmen Brian Coll, Mike Williams, and the entire leadership team; to the Gonzaga Father’s Club; and, to the volunteer staff responsible for making this tournament possible, I wish you all the utmost success as you continue to serve those in need! Once again, I join the 700,000 and growing residents of Washington, DC in offering greetings to participants and best wishes for victory at the 2023 Gonzaga DC Classic Basketball Tournament!

GONZAGA FATHERS CLUB Dear Basketball Fans: Welcome to the 34th Annual Gonzaga DC Classic. We are proud to continue this outstanding tradition, bringing together some great schools and students from around the country for three days of exceptional basketball. What makes this tournament different, however, is its purpose. This event, staffed, promoted, organized, and managed entirely by volunteers, is focused on furthering Gonzaga’s service program. Our slogan, “Great Basketball Supporting Good Works,” is our objective. Service is a central part of a Gonzaga education. As fathers of current and former Gonzaga students, we know how important service has been to their education and formation. Over the years, since the DC Classic’s Founding Chairman John McLaughlin and his colleagues established the tournament, the Gonzaga Fathers Club has donated over $1.6 million toward service programs at Gonzaga College High School. Those donations are thanks to our sponsors and advertisers, many of whom have been with us for many years, the coaches and players who have participated in the tournament, and the fans who come to see and support great basketball. As we celebrate the 34th edition of this great tradition we mourn the passing this year of two pillars of its success, Founding Chairman John McLaughlin and long-time Gonzaga Athletic Director Joe Reyda. The Gonzaga DC Classic would not exist without the tireless efforts and contributions of these two outstanding gentlemen. They embodied the ideals of selfless service, giving back, and fostering great competitive basketball that will guide us for years to come. We are grateful for your attendance. We urge you to support those who support this tournament through advertisements in this program. We hope you enjoy the games, and we wish you and yours a wonderful Christmas season. Sincerely, Brian Miller President, Gonzaga Father’s Club

PEDRO ARRUPE SERVICE AWARD Joseph J. Reyda, Class of 1985 In 2007, the Gonzaga Fathers Club established the Gonzaga DC Classic Pedro Arrupe Award. This award recognizes a Gonzaga graduate who has lived his life in service to the standards of being a “Man for Others.” The Gonzaga Fathers Club and Classic Tournament Committee are proud to present the 2023 Pedro Arrupe Award to the late Joe Reyda. Reyda, a 1985 Gonzaga graduate, returned to Gonzaga as an assistant football coach in 1989, while he was a student at Catholic University and never left. He served as assistant dean of students, assistant athletic director and director of special events before taking over as athletic director in 2001. In Joe’s 22 years leading the department, Gonzaga was one of the most successful prep programs in the D.C. area and the country. The Eagles won more than 100 league titles in the competitive Washington Catholic Athletic Conference. In the community, Joe worked to establish a Coaches Day of Service which came to fruition in the summer of 2022 and will continue as an annual event. The purpose of this day is for Gonzaga’s head coaches to gather as a group and serve alongside one another in service to the community. For the past two summers, they worked at Gonzaga’s Father Horace McKenna Center. The McKenna Center is a drop-in center for homeless men that’s located in the basement of St. Aloysius Church on Gonzaga's campus. Joe supported each of the coaches and their programs encouraging them to conduct their own days of service. Most programs have a great track record of volunteering their teams at local sites and Joe was instrumental in supporting them in these efforts.
Joseph J. Reyda
Each year, the Catholic Business Network of Montgomery County, Maryland (CBN-MC) gathers to honor a group of youth athletic coaches who have made extraordinary contributions to CYO and other youth athletic programs over the years. In recognition of Joe’s service to the community and to youth sports, the CBN-MC honored Joe at their 24th Annual Hall of Fame Awards Breakfast in October 2023.

Lucas hails from Capitol Hill in Washington DC and is a parishioner at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Over the past four years, Lucas has contributed as a natural leader in the classroom and in the greater Eye Street community—both in his words and actions—all while participating on three varsity sports teams. Lucas is the captain of Gonzaga’s cross-country team—which won both the WCAC and DCSAA titles this fall—as well as a member of the indoor and outdoor varsity track teams. Coach John Ausema describes Lucas as “an outstanding leader (someone) who demonstrates leadership and commitment to excellence in all aspects of running. Lucas is particular about doing all of the ‘little things’ that lead to success as a runner. He works hard in practice every day and is always striving to improve his performance.” In addition, Lucas has demonstrated a real commitment to service and to the work of Gonzaga’s Campus Ministry Department. Lucas was chosen to travel to Ecuador on a school sponsored service trip last summer. Lucas also currently serves on Gonzaga’s retreat team, having effectively led a sophomore retreat already this year and likely to lead a Kairos retreat next semester.

Archbishop Ryan High School, with a student population of over 865, is one of the largest high schools in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Archbishop Ryan strives to teach as Jesus did by providing spiritual, social and service opportunities for growth. The school has prepared generations of students to be successful in their post high school endeavors, challenged by the faculty through a comprehensive academic curriculum. Students benefit from classroom instruction and a library/media center that together incorporate state of the art wireless technology. All students must take four credits each in theology and English language arts, and three credits each in social studies, mathematics and science. Curriculum highlights include opportunities to participate in programs at the accelerated/honors level, fourteen advanced placement courses, and to compete to be a diocesan scholar. Selected diocesan scholars are provided the opportunity to take four courses for credit at a nearby Catholic college during senior year. With a wide variety of extracurricular activities offered, approximately 90% of the students participate in clubs, sports, performance activities, theater productions, and service activities. Daily witness to our Catholic faith is reflected by our religious education curriculum, special religious events, in-house and overnight retreats. The school’s distinctive red and gold seal, containing the Archbishop Ryan motto, “In Vite Mane” (“Remain on the Vine”) is visible throughout the school. Students and alumni continue to be a part of the Ryan family, and always proudly proclaim “WE ARE AR!”
Saint John’s Catholic Prep
Gonzaga College High School
Saint John’s Catholic Preparatory School, located in Buckeystown, MD, is the oldest Catholic high school in the state of Maryland. Saint John’s Catholic Prep prepares students to be leaders with good hearts and discerning spirits as they pursue truth, academic excellence, and service to humanity. In the classroom, students are encouraged to ask questions, think critically, and be curious by engaging in a rigorous college preparatory educational program. Our faculty challenges students to reach their greatest potential by fostering the exchange of ideas, recognizing and respecting views of others, nurturing individual faith journeys, and promoting community stewardship. Small class sizes, experienced teachers, and daily academic support allows our students to understand complex concepts, build successful academic skills, apply deeper meaning to subjects, and advocate for their own learning, giving them the knowledge and skills to be successful wherever their academic journey takes them next. At Saint John’s Catholic Prep 70 percent of our students are student athletes who participate in varsity and junior varsity sports. Our SJCP Vikings learn skills and strategy, but, more importantly, they are exposed to the ideals of teamwork, leadership, sacrifice, and the devotion to excellence through our coaches and challenge of interscholastic competition. Our girls teams play in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland (IAAM) and our boys teams in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA).
The oldest all-boys school in Washington, DC, Gonzaga has a rich legacy that stretches back 200 years. Over the course of that history, Gonzaga has demonstrated and reaffirmed a deep commitment to Jesuit education. And it has chosen to do so in the heart of the inner city. Today, Gonzaga’s downtown location is one of the many reasons for our success. With a total enrollment of 960, Gonzaga annually awards over $4.5 million in financial aid to over 35% of its students. Learning opportunities abound on Eye Street through the availability of over 100 honors and AP sections, and our students are well prepared for college and beyond. Students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of athletics and other extra-curricular activities. With 18 sports offered, and 41 athletic teams, more than 80% of our students participate in a sport each year. Gonzaga also produces two large-scale theater productions annually and offers opportunities to take part in multiple musical groups. Our commitment to spirituality and social service is realized annually by over 700 students who participate in Kairos and other class retreats, and through over 20,000 student service hours completed. Through religious studies, retreats, opportunities for prayer, and service, Gonzaga seeks to help students answer these questions “What have I done for Christ? What am I doing for Christ? What will I do for Christ?” The answers to these questions are the four-year and lifelong quest of a Gonzaga student.

Georgetown Prepartory School
Riverdale Baptist
SCHOOL PROFILE
SCHOOL PROFILE
Riverdale Baptist School is a private Christian school located in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, serving students from Pre-K to 12. It is accredited through the Middle States Association Com-missions on Elementary and Secondary Schools.
Founded in 1789, Georgetown Preparatory School is America’s oldest Catholic boarding and day school for young men. Georgetown Prep is an independent, Jesuit, college preparatory school for grades 9-12. Located in North Bethesda, Maryland, the school enjoys the cultural and historic resources of the metropolitan Washington, D.C., area. Both Georgetown Prep and Georgetown University sprang from the vision of the remarkable John Carroll, the first bishop of Baltimore. Carroll regarded the school as critical to the future of the Catholic Church in the United States. A number of themes recur throughout Georgetown Prep’s history. Most importantly, the Jesuits of Georgetown regarded the Christian formation of students as their primary mission. Knowledge and skills, although important, were approached as means to an end: the knowledge and love of God. The highly structured curriculum emphasized study of the classics as a means of disciplining the mind, imbibing the wisdom of the ancients, and developing eloquentia or facility in speaking and writing. Religious and ethnic pluralism also characterized the preparatory school. From its inception, Georgetown Prep accepted students from foreign countries and from religious traditions other than Roman Catholic. The aim of the Prep community is to provide young men not only with knowledge but also with the spiritual, moral, and aesthetic values which will prepare them for a life of high achievement, community service, and personal fulfillment. This year, Georgetown Prep celebrates its 234th year of forming Men for Others.
Riverdale Baptist School was founded in 1971. Through Bible class, daily prayer, chapel and spiritual emphasis, Riverdale Baptist exhorts its students how to keep Christ in the center of their lives. The school enrolls approximately 300 students in a college preparatory program that prepares its students for success in higher education with honors and AP courses. Riverdale Baptist seniors also complete a Capstone project (thesis paper) as part of their junior and sen-ior years. The school maintains state-of-the-art equipment and network infrastructure to max-imize its students’ ability to learn.

Saint Vincent Pallotti
Archbishop Spalding
The St.Vincent Pallotti Panthers are looking to have a great 2023-24 season, playing in the tough Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA). Head Coach Christopher Douglas is in his first year at Pallotti, after spending the last two seasons as an assistant coach at Gonzaga College High School. Coach Douglas has veteran returners to help lead the team. Last year’s leading scorer Joseph Connelly returns, along with seniors Nzube Etolue and Jerrold Mathis as key starters. Jordan Green, Kemuel Dankyi, Wayne Shields, Drew Parker, and freshman Jaden Dory will have important roles on the team. Pallotti’s schedule will be competitive this year. The Panthers will face St. Francis, Mt. St Joseph’s, and Glenelg Country School as part of their challenging MIAA conference schedule. Non-conference tournaments include the Bullis Holiday Tournament (Potomac,Md.) and also the Carolina Classic Invitational (Charleston, S.C.). Archbishop Ryan, one of the top teams in the highly competitive Philadelphia Catholic League (PCL) looks to build on last year’s 18-9 season with even more success in 2023-24. Ninth year head coach Joe Zeglinski has four returning starters, led by 6-9 senior center Thomas Sorber (Georgetown University commit) and 6-3 senior guard Darren Williams (Florida Gulf Coast University commit). Joining these three-year starters are 6-6 senior forward Jaden Murray, 6-foot senior guard Ryan Everett and 6-1 senior guard Rocco Morabito (Gannon University commit). The Raiders have plenty of depth as well, with 6-4 junior guard Brandon Russell, 6-3 senior wing Christian Durham, 6-foot senior guard Gavin Reed and 5-11 sophomore guard Matt Johnson as part of the rotation. Coach Zeglinski has a veteran, focused squad that expects to compete for a PCL, city and state championship this year. In addition to the Gonzaga DC Classic, the Raiders nonconference schedule includes the City of Palms Tournament in Fort Myers, Florida from December 19-23 and a home contest against Rutgers Prep on December 28. Gonzaga College High School
The Vikings play in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) where they finished fifth last season. Team members collected a number of honors, including All-MIAA and All-Frederick County selections. Led by third year Head Coach Devin Williams, the Vikings look to continue rebuilding their culture and establishing a name in the DMV area. SJCP has a roster filled with gritty under-the-radar talent that includes senior transfers Xavier Grainger and Tim Avrine. The squad is led by senior guard Ayden Hurley, currently being recruited by several NCAA Division III schools. Other notable players include junior Tristan Thompson, freshman Mamadou Sako, and sophomores Blaine Kalaw and Aaron Shoffner. “This season is a great opportunity for our team and community collectively,” says Coach Williams. “We are truly grateful and excited to participate in the Gonzaga DC Classic, a kickoff to the season which always meant so much to me during my time down on Eye Street. Being able to bring my program to such a storied event will be a great opportunity for not only my student-athletes but our community also. I look forward to the buzz of the lights at Carmody Center and sitting on the visitors’ side of the gym.”
Gonzaga comes into the 34th Annual DC Classic as the reigning champion, knocking off local D.C. power Jackson-Reed in last year’s title game, 64-58. Coach Steve Turner, now in his 20th season as head coach, has an impressive 440-165 record. His Eagles play in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) - one of the nation’s best, where they face nationally ranked competition in schools like Paul VI, DeMatha, St. Johns, and O’Connell. Turner’s Eagles are coming off a 26-11 season and return nine players, including three junior starters from last year’s varsity: guards Nykolas Lewis and Derek Dixon, and forward Alex Touomou. Lewis, a 2023 First Team All-WCAC and All Met player, helps lead the Eagles. Turner says Dixon continues to grow as a perennial perimeter threat, and Touomou is a player to watch – along with junior transfer Christian Gurdak at center. Turner also expects a lot from junior guard William Harper and senior guard Blake Harper, who recently signed with Howard University. Gonzaga travels to the Chicago Elite Classic in early December, then to Arkansas for the King Cotton Classic during the Christmas Break. In January they face an away test against the number one ranked team nationally, Florida’s Monteverde Academy. The Eagles also travel to Springfield, Mass. for the Hoop Hall Classic over the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday weekend where they will face New Jersey power Hudson Catholic before turning their focus back to the remaining WCAC schedule.

The Dolphins had an impressive 23-8 season last year, falling short of their championship goal and losing in the Illinois state elite eight. Coach Tyrone Slaughter has a strong, young foundation, and will look to follow the standard set by six returning seniors, two of whom were starters last season. The team is led by one of the top players in the state, Antonio Munoz, a 6’6 junior forward/wing, and by Damajay Richardson, a 6’0 junior guard, and Sean Brown, a 6’0 senior guard. All are looking to return to the big stage this year and redeem themselves. Other contributors include Rykan Woo, a 6’1 sophomore guard, Cole Pruitt, a 6’4 senior guard, and Marquis Clark, a 6’2 sophomore guard.
Jackson-Reed High School, one of the most competitive public or private high school teams in the DMV area, looks to build on their 28-8 record from last season. After back-to-back District of Columbia State Athletic Association (DCSAA) championship appearances, Coach David Johnson enters his third year as head coach with a solid core of returning players. His squad expects to compete for the District of Columbia Interscholastic Athletic Association and DCSAA championship titles. The Tigers return junior 6’9 forward Jayden Fort (with offers from Xavier University, George Washington University, Texas A&M University, East Carolina University, and the University of Rhode Island, among others), senior guard 6’4 Lucas Sekasi (with offers from Sacred Heart University, West Liberty University, and Gannon University), senior guard 5’11 Joseph Mcrae and senior guard 6’0 Justin Gilmore. With the key additions of senior guard 6’5 Scottie Hubbard and junior forward 6’5 Josiah Massaquoi (with offers from American University, Howard University, and Mt. St Mary’s University) the Tigers look to put together a big year.

In addition to the Gonzaga DC Classic, Jackson-Reed will compete in the Arby’s Classic in Bristol, Tenn., during the Christmas break and play a demanding out-of-conference schedule. Highlights include contests at the St. James MLK Classic at Bowie State University, Bowie, Md., January 12-15, and at the IMG Ascender Classic at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, January 19-20.
Georgetown Prep
Riverdale Baptist
Georgetown Preparatory School from North Bethesda, Maryland returns to the Gonzaga DC Classic for the first time since 2019. The Hoyas play in the Interstate Athletic Conference (IAC) and finished the 2022-23 season with a final record of 15-10, falling in the IAC semifinals. Highlights from last season included a trip to Tampa, Florida to compete against fellow Jesuit schools in the Cookie Garcia Jesuit Invitational and defeating DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, MD) 89-72 in the Capitol Hoops Challenge. Led by Head Coach Howard Blue, the Hoyas are looking to contend for an IAC championship this season. Georgetown Prep brings back nine players from last season’s roster, including senior forward Goap Kodi (6’10, Loyola University Maryland) and all-conference junior guards Akbar Waheed III (6’6) and Patrick McDonough (5’11). In addition to the Gonzaga DC Classic, Georgetown Prep’s challenging non-conference schedule includes Good Counsel’s Xaverian Classic (Olney, MD), Governors Challenge (Salisbury, MD), Capitol Hoops Challenge (Reston, VA), and a home contest vs. Sidwell Friends (Washington, D.C.). Coach Blue states, “This season is a great opportunity for our team and players collectively. We are truly grateful and excited to be participating in the Gonzaga DC Classic tournament again.” Follow Georgetown Prep basketball on Instagram (@gprepbasketball) and Twitter/X (@GPrepBasketball). It’s a new era for the Riverdale Baptist School Crusaders under the leadership of Bruce Shingler, newly appointed as head coach before the start of the 2023-24 season. Prior to taking the lead role at Riverdale Baptist, Coach Shingler served in college basketball coaching roles at Maryland, South Carolina, and Towson after a playing career at St. Augustine’s College. The Crusaders started the 2023-24 season on a high note with two strong wins at the 15th Annual Thanksgiving Hoopfest in Dallas. They averaged 77 points per game and played tough defense with tenacious rebounding. Riverdale Baptist projects to be a defensive-minded team this year that will guard with speed and aggressiveness. On offense, look for the Crusaders to space the floor and feature strong perimeter shooting. The Crusaders are coming off a strong 2022-23 season in which they finished 27-4, went undefeated in Metro Independent School Athletic League conference play, and won their conference tournament. The team returns several players from that successful season and several transfers as well. The Crusaders expect to be strongly competitive and to contend for another conference championship. Seniors Nathaniel Wooden and Jackson Furman and junior Ashley Sims will provide veteran leadership as returning players who logged significant minutes for the Crusaders last year. All are college recruits who bring athleticism and sharp shooting to their games. Senior Xavier Pickett and juniors Giovanni Sanford, Dominic Carr, and Zion Foy join Riverdale Baptist as transfer students capable of boosting the Crusaders with skill and veteran presence. As a key performer on Eleanor Roosevelt’s 2022 Maryland state championship team, Gio Sanford is expected to be major contributor for the Crusaders.

G O N Z A G A’ S S E R V I C E P R O G R A M S The Gonzaga DC Classic is proud to support the following initiatives, which are so important to the formation of young men in the spirit of the Jesuit motto, Ad majorem Dei gloriam, for the Greater Glory of God. The Romero Center
Kino Border Initiative
Crispaz
Romero Center Ministries was founded on March 24, 1998, on the 18th anniversary of the martyrdom of Saint Oscar Romero of El Salvador. Gonzaga students participate in The Urban Challenge Program, an urban, service-learning, immersion experience rooted in the Catholic faith tradition.
Students learn about the realities of immigration. Students work with the Kino Border Initiative, a Jesuit organization that seeks to meet the needs of migrants in Nogales. This immersion experience includes crossing the border to work at the KBI soup kitchen, meeting with US Border Patrol agents and hearing a deportation debriefing.
Students partner with Crispaz, walking the life of Saint Oscar Romero and others who have paved the way for justice in El Salvador. Students learn from the Salvadoran people about their lives, histories, and hopes for the future. This immersion focuses on encounter, education, immersion, and conversation rather than direct service.

Jerusalem Farm Kansas City, MO
Jerusalem Farm is a Catholic intentional community located in Kansas City, MO. Built on the four cornerstones of Prayer, Community, Service and Simplicity, Gonzaga students participate in programs designed to “transform our lives and those around us through service retreat experiences, sustainable living and home repair.”
Red Cloud Indian School South Dakota
Students are immersed in the culture of the Lakota Tribe. Volunteers learn about life on the reservation while working with the Red Cloud Indian School and assisting nearby families through mentoring, tutoring and more.
San Salvador, El Salvador
McKenna Center Washington DC
A five-day encounter with urban poverty and homelessness. This program is run right out of our own McKenna Center; students even get to sleep there for the week. Aside from getting to know the men at the center, students will get to do direct service at organizations around DC such as SOME, Martha’s Table, and DC Central Kitchen.
Homeboy Industries
Working Boy’s Center
Dolores Mission is the birthplace of Homeboy Industries, the now prominent intervention and rehabilitation ministry to gangs founded by Jesuit Fr. Gregory Boyle and author of Gonzaga required reading, Tattoos on the Heart. Gonzaga students participate in the many initiatives of the Mission in the East Los Angeles Community.
A work of the Society of Jesus that promotes the empowerment of the most vulnerable families in Quito in constructing their own life plans for success through programming to strengthen their own capabilities. Gonzaga students participate in the Center’s programs which focus on ten important areas of life: loyalty, personal formation, family, religion, education, economy, work, recreation, health and

Celebrating the life of
The Gonzaga DC Classic Tournament Committee mourns the passing of Joe Reyda, Gonzaga’s Athletic Director, earlier this year. Joe was an integral part of the DC Classic and was a constant presence at the Tournament every December. Joe would be in the gym setting up prior to the first game on Friday and wouldn’t leave until after awarding Tournament trophies after the Sunday final. The Tournament is one of the annual highlights on the Gonzaga athletic calendar and Joe loved working with the dads, students, players, coaches, and corps of volunteers who make the Tournament a success every year. Joe graduated from Gonzaga in 1985 and never strayed too far from Eye Street. He returned to the school as an assistant football coach in 1989, while he was a student at Catholic University, and never left. 53
1967-2023
He coached football for 18 seasons, including three as the head coach. He also was the golf coach for nine seasons. He was a stoic leader, the type who earned respect without theatrics. Joe coached and counseled thousands of young men to become caring, dedicated and honorable adults during the 34 years he worked at Gonzaga, and he truly believed he had the world’s best job. Notably, Joe’s last regular season game as head football coach was one of the most historic games in the 100 plus year rivalry between Gonzaga and St. John’s. The Eagles took down the Cadets 35-34 in a back and forth thriller at Blair High School, capped off by a game sealing interception from future NFL Player Kevin Hogan. Joe was inducted into the Gonzaga Athletic Hall of Fame in 2016 in recognition of his devotion and contributions to Gonzaga. On this weekend as we celebrate “Great Basketball Supporting Good Works” in the 34th Annual Gonzaga DC Classic Basketball Tournament, the Tournament Committee remembers Joe Reyda for his dedication to the Jesuit philosophy of service and being a “Man for Others.”
S TAT E M E N T O F P U R P O S E The Gonzaga DC Classic Basketball Tournament was conceived and established by the Gonzaga High School Fathers Club to support the goals of good basketball, fellowship among teams and players, citizenship and community service. Gonzaga believes that community service is an important principle of its educational philosophy, its motto of “Men For Others” serves to underscore this principle which forms the foundation for the many community service projects in which the school and its students participate. Projects such as tutoring children in elementary schools, working with local groups for the handicapped, working with the poor in Appalachia and the Dominican Republic, participating in summer camps for inner city children, a work study project/cultural exchange with the Lakota Sioux Indians in Pine Ridge, South Dakota, working at The McKenna Center for the homeless right on the Gonzaga Campus, and working with migrant farmers in Apopka, Florida are just a few of the ways in which Gonzaga’s students serve and learn about serving others. It is programs and projects such as these to which we pledge the proceeds of our tournament. Basketball is a great sport and we of the Gonzaga Fathers Club believe it can also be a means by which we can promote the Gonzaga ideal of being “Men For Others.”
