OFFICE OF THE HEADMASTER

“You miss 100% of the shots you never take.” ~ Wayne Gretzky November 2021 Dear Hockey Fans, Welcome to another exciting year of Gonzaga hockey! Our new Head Coach Kyle Sennott, the assistant coaches and the team have been working hard throughout the year and I am impressed with their commitment to their sport, to Gonzaga and to each other. The tradition of Gonzaga hockey is an important one on Eye Street, and this year we are once again proud to host the Purple Puck Tournament. At the start of a season, it is good to reflect on the role of sports in a Jesuit school. Athletics at Gonzaga is about being generous with one’s God-given talents, and life lessons like dedication, commitment, and sacrifice. The hard work a student-athlete puts into the season is for the team, our school, and the season’s goal. Athletics is a part of cura personalis – that hallmark of Jesuit education – care of the whole person. Gonzaga forms young men who are well-rounded in body, mind, and spirit; young men who learn, as is intonated by the great Wayne Gretzky in the quote above, that there is no success without great effort. In fact, they learn this effort is far more important than wins and losses. The experiences of our students on the ice, in the classroom, on retreats and through Christian service projects, work together in the formation of our students into men for others. On behalf of our students and faculty, Gonzaga’s hockey players and coaches, I want to thank you for all your support of this program and for helping to make athletics such a positive experience for so many boys at Gonzaga. The lessons our students can learn in a program such as this will last them a lifetime, no matter where they go. Good luck to all the coaches and players! Go Eagles! Sincerely,

Thomas K. Every II Headmaster 5 | 2021-2022 GONZAGA ICE HOCKEY PROGRAM

GONZAGA COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL

G

ONZAGA is the oldest educational institution in the old Federal City of Washington, opening its doors to lay students in 1821 as the Washington Seminary, under the charter of Georgetown College and the direction of Father Anthony Kohlmann. The school, within sight of the Capitol and an easy carriage ride from the White house, flourished for several years. On one famous occasion, President John Quincy Adams came to Commencement and examined the boys in Latin and Greek. However, the school had no endowment, and the rules and regulations of the Society of Jesus did not allow the school to charge tuition. Since tuition was necessary to keep the school open, the Jesuits left in 1827. Although the rules against charging tuition were changed just a few years later, the Jesuits did not return until 1848. The Seminary was instantly successful, and the next year, President Zachary Taylor was present at commencement, a sure sign of the school’s good standing. In May 1858, President James Buchanan signed an Act of Congress that changed the name to Gonzaga College and granted the school a Federal charter. Gonzaga was indeed a college, and actually conferred some bachelor’s degrees before phasing out the baccalaureate program by 1900. The school moved to its present location, North Capitol and Eye Street, NW, in 1871, to be near Saint Al’s, which the Jesuits had built in 1859. The school occupied space that had been a former orphanage (this accounts for the strange shape of some of the classrooms). Renamed Kohlmann Hall, this building housed the Jesuit community as well as the high school. The move was nearly disastrous; so few people lived in the area that enrollment dropped precipitously, leading to real questions about the school’s survival. The neighborhood gradually expanded, with new homes appearing in what had been fields. The number of students applying to Gonzaga increased, and by its 75th anniversary, the school was ready to expand. The campus expanded with the 1896 dedication of Gonzaga College Hall, which today houses the oldest continually operating theatre in Washington, D.C. A magnificent addition, it still preserves all the scene-changing equipment from that era, and is a virtual museum of theater in its own right. In 1912, Cardinal Gibbons presided over opening ceremonies of the new “Main Building,” now known as Dooley Hall. The façade, matching the theatre, provided a stately image in the busy neighborhood traffic of Eye Street. This began a long period of peace and stability for Gonzaga. The surrounding area became solidly Irish Catholic, bringing prosperity to school and parish alike. The school’s curriculum was based on the universal Jesuit

plan of ratio studiorum, found in every Jesuit school in the world. Emphasizing the classics, the curriculum followed a logical progression of studies. Large numbers of Jesuits taught, and there were few lay teachers. Tuition remained at less than $200 per year until 1956. By the early 1960s, Gonzaga’s neighborhood changed, and inner city tensions escalated. When Saint Al’s parochial school closed, the building was taken over by Gonzaga and is now Cantwell Hall. When the city erupted in riots in 1968, fires burned all around the campus, but the church and school were spared. Soon after those riots, however, a bleak period followed in which enrollment dropped and the school once again, began to fail. By the early 1970s, there were serious discussions around closing Gonzaga, or moving its location to the suburbs. Instead, the Maryland Province of Jesuits declared its total commitment to Gonzaga as a school part of and serving the inner city. Positive steps to save the school soon followed, including the dedication of Buchanan Field, Gonzaga’s first home athletic field in 1974, and the addition of the Carmody gym three years later. The 1980s saw the addition of Forte Hall and incorporating Arupe Hall (the building that houses the Academy of Notre Dame) to the campus. Much of this activity and revitalization was directed under the watchful eye of Father Bernard Dooley, Gonzaga’s president for 20 years, who died in 2006. His tenure was capped with the magnificent restoration of the Great Church of Saint Aloysius. Today, Gonzaga has its largest student body ever and is physically as well as financially sound. In recent years, the school has again substantially updated and renovated its playing fields and campus, which includes Cantwell and Ruesch Hall, a state-ofthe-art academic facility with science, music and technology centers. Its location, which twice in the past appeared to seriously threaten the school’s continued existence, is one of the primary reasons for its success. Throughout the years, Gonzaga has reaffirmed a deep commitment to Jesuit education, and it has chosen to do so in the heart of the inner city, on a street shared with leaders of business and government, and on a block where it ministers to the least fortunate in society. This commitment to remain in the city, to be in media res, at the heart of things, has enabled Gonzaga students to understand the meaning of being Men for Others. A Wall Street Journal editorial referred to the school as “the premier Catholic high school of Washington.” Its excellent academic program and the fervor of its spirit make it a special place indeed. Ad Majorem dei Gloriam.

THE PURPLE PUCK

S

ince 1993, high school hockey teams from near and far have ventured to iconic Fort Dupont Ice Arena in southeast Washington, D.C., each holiday season to play the game they love, see our nation’s capital, make new friends and reconnect with old ones. It is the mix of high-level competition, camaraderie and an unparalleled setting that make the National Capital Hockey Tournament, known as the Purple Puck, so special. With views of the skyline of the world’s most powerful city, Fort Dupont Ice Arena will once again host this annual event, which has grown into one of the preeminent holiday hockey tournaments on the East Coast. At its inception, then-president of Gonzaga College High School, Father Bernard J. Dooley described the Purple Puck as “both the first Gonzaga-sponsored hockey tournament and the first hockey tournament for high school teams in the Washington, D.C., area.” This year’s tournament marks the 28th Purple Puck, which has become a prominent destination for top-flight hockey. This year’s roster of participants in the Prep Division is again one of the strongest fields in the history of the Purple Puck Competition. Joining us this year are the 2016 champs St. Joseph’s Prep from Philadelphia, Pa.; our 2010 champion Loyola Academy from Wilmette, Ill.; and some of the best teams in the area to include: St. John’s College High School of D.C., Spalding and St. Albans. As hockey has grown, so has the Purple Puck’s Varsity Division. In addition to the fierce competition of the Prep Division, six teams will battle for top honors in the Varsity Division – Gonzaga V2, Loyola Maroon, Spalding II, St. Ignatius II and St. Joseph Prep II. While hockey is the focus of the Purple Puck, it is the people who come back time and time again that make it special. The Purple Puck is still a volunteer-run operation, and that is part of what makes it a success each year. On behalf of Gonzaga College High School and the Gonzaga Hockey Program, we want to extend our heartfelt thank you to every parent, player, volunteer and fan who has made the first 28 Purple Puck tournaments so amazing. The success

GONZAGA HOCKEY COACHES VARSITY 2 HEAD COACH Bryan King

Bryan King was born and raised in Washington, D.C., and is a graduate of School Without Walls Senior High School. Bryan started playing hockey at age 6 at Fort Dupont Ice Arena with the Fort Dupont Cannons Ice Hockey Program. From an early age, he knew that playing or coaching the game of hockey was a passion of his. From there he went on to play with the Metro Maple Leaf Ice Hockey team and to La Salle University, where he played in the American Collegiate Hockey Associate DII Hockey program. After graduation, Bryan returned back home, where he volunteered as an assistant coach with the Fort Dupont Cannons program. Coach Bryan is committed to building the game of hockey in the D.C. metropolitan area and is now entering his fourth season at Gonzaga.

VARSITY 2 ASSISTANT COACH Ian Wuertz

Ian Wuertz is entering his second year at Gonzaga and is excited to get back on the ice. While attending Regis Jesuit High School in Colorado, Ian played three years at the Varsity level and competed for state and national titles. After graduating in 2015, Coach Ian attended Seattle University. Unfortunately, the hockey craze had yet to arrive in the Pacific Northwest, but Ian still worked with athletics in the Competitive Sports program with the university. He tells people that he had a very brief career as a professional hockey player, but it was just intramural floor hockey. In addition to his role in the Gonzaga Hockey program, he is an Assistant Dean of Students at Gonzaga and also teaches senior English. Off the rink and out of the classroom, his one true love is writing, and his novel is available for purchase on Amazon with a forthcoming sequel.

GONZAGA HOCKEY COACHES JUNIOR VARSITY HEAD COACH Patrick Guinan

JUNIOR VARSITY ASSISTANT COACH T.J. Gletner ‘17

Patrick Guinan is a native of York, Pa., where he playerd youth hockey from the age of 5 for the York Devils ice hockey club. He played JV hockey for Central York HIgh School. After suffering repeated concussions, he was no longer able to play hockey. Patrick has continued to stay involved in the game his entire life by coaching at the Bob Hartley HIgh Intensity camp. This camp has provided a wealth of knowledge about the game from the top-tier players in the world. Patrick started the first-ever ice hockey program at York College of Pennsylvania, where he was assistant coach. This is Patrick’s third season with the Gonzaga Eagles.

T.J. Gletner graduated from Gonzaga in 2017. He played hockey for four years on Varsity II, serving as Assistant Captain his junior year and as Captain his senior year. His V2 team won back-to-back MAPHL Championships in 2016 and 2017, along with two Purple Puck Championships. Additionally, he served as a Retreat Team Leader and as French Club President. He graduated from Georgetown University in 2021, where he played Club Rugby, serving as Captain, and is a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He now works at Gonzaga as a member of the Alumni Service Corps.

TEAM MANAGERS SENIOR V1 MANAGER Milo Justice

After years of skating at the National Sculpture Garden with no interest in hockey, Milo had the sudden urge to try. Towering over the other kids in beginning hockey classes as an unusually tall 10-year-old, Milo didn’t flinch when one instructor told him he was “over the hill.” Nevermind, he joined the Georgetown Titans and within a year, became assistant captain and a highscoring defender. He joined the Wells Warriors and made it as an alternate on Gonzaga’s JV team, then played in nearly every game. By sophomore year, he

became an assistant captain on JV who loved big hits. Severe injuries to both feet during the pandemic ended Milo’s skating career, but it didn’t end his hockey career. Milo is managing the V1 team, and those hockey shoulders are throwing shotput and discus his senior year. “Gonzaga hockey taught me about resilience and hard work,” Milo said. “While it hasn’t always been easy, I’m better for the experience. It’s a pleasure to get to stay with the team as manager. Live the fourth!”

His love of the game grew as he competed at higher levels, playing for Capitals Academy and Montgomery Blue Devils. He eventually made it to the Tier II U18 National Championships — a special accomplishment and lifetime memory. His time as a Gonzaga Eagle gave some of his best experiences, earning V2 Offensive Player of the Year as a freshman and playing on V1 as a sophomore. GONZAGA HOCKEY HISTORY 2021-2022 Kyle Sennott HC • TJ Kouba (C) • Aidan Petretich (A) • Peter Pirone (A) All systems are finally “go” for Gonzaga Hockey this year. With first-year Head Coach Kyle Sennott at the helm, the team kicked off the year with the annual Dominik Pettey ’15 Memorial Purple-White game on November 11, 2021. All three teams were able to compete in the traditional day-afterThanksgiving games at St. Joe’s Prep in Philly, with JV and V2 coming home with wins, and V1 playing to a 2-2 tie. 2020-2021 Sammy Gerdano HC • Sean Kilcullen (C) • Jack Mowrey (A) • Jack Norton (A) While the COVID-19 Pandemic caused the cancellation of the MAPHL season, the Gonzaga Hockey program still showed up! After the shut-down in the spring of 2020, the program held a Push Up Challenge and raised $29,000 for DC Urban Greens, an innovative nonprofit that grows vegetables for families in Wards 7&8. In November, current and former Gonzaga Hockey families came together virtually in a record-breaking “11 Days for #11” that raised almost $90,000 for the Dominik Pettey ’15 Scholarship Fund – nearly double the amount raised in any previous year. Another record-breaking stat is the 81 student athletes who would have tried out for the three Gonzaga teams had there been tryouts. Many of these players participated in the series of practices at MedStar Capitals IcePlex and The Gardens Ice House that constituted the hockey “season” for Gonzaga. Marquise Cotten ’11 and Bryan King were in their first year as V2 Co-Head Coaches, while Patrick Guinan would have led the JV squad. 2019-2020 (13-10-4) Sammy Gerdano HC • Luca Docking (C) • Farrell Dinn (A) • Sean Kilcullen (A)• Colin O’Leary (A) The Eagles kicked off their season with the Annual Dominik Pettey ‘15 Memorial Purple White game on November 8, 2019. GONZAGA HOCKEY HISTORY 1997-1998 (9-2) Jeff Ottenbreit, HC • Mike Tarantino (C) • Lexie Lewis (A) Varsity posted another strong season, finishing third in league play and reaching the MSHL semifinals, but the Eagles fell to Mt. Saint Joe’s 2-1. JV Purple won the MSHL championship. Washington Post All-Met selections: Jake Jackson – 1st team; Brad Holzwart – 2nd team; and Lexie Lewis, Brian Carmack and Bubba Roache – honorable mention. 1996-1997 (8-2) Jeff Ottenbreit, HC • Paul Tilch (C) • Mike Tarantino (A) Varsity reached MSHL semifinals, losing to Mount Saint Joe’s 4-2. JV Purple made the MSHL championship game against DeMatha. Several Gonzaga hockey players were recognized in the first Washington Post Ice Hockey All-Met selections: Paul Tilch – 1st team and Lexie Lewis and Brad Holzwart – honorable mention. 1995-1996 (7-3) Ed McGonagle, HC • Paul Tilch (C) A young Gonzaga Varsity team (nine sophomores) just missed earning a playoff spot. In the Purple Puck, the Eagles faced a talented Hudson Catholic (NJ) team, a shootout against Churchill, and a 10-1 romp over Sherwood. JV Purple went undefeated and won the Purple Puck. It was the first Gonzaga hockey team to win a league championship, defeating Mount Saint Joe’s for the MSHL JV Championship. 1994-1995 (12-2-1) Ed McGonagle, HC • Chris Connolly (C) Both the team and the program made impressive strides this season. In its third season, Gon¬zaga added two JV teams. Varsity gave DeMatha “the biggest scare of the season.” The game was described as a “meeting of two area hockey powerhouses.” JV Purple went 8-2; its only two losses were to DeMatha. Purple played in the championship game against DeMatha, losing 3-2. 1993-1994 (12-3) Ed McGonagle, HC • Eric Bovim (C) Varsity posted its first winning season, losing only to DeMatha and Landon, and beating Good Counsel three times. The Eagles finished third in the championships. The team scored 82 goals and only allowed 36 goals. Gonzaga hosted the first National Capital Hockey Tournament, known as the “Purple Puck.” Landon won the tournament; Gonzaga was the runner-up. 1992-1993 (4-5-1) Ed McGonagle, HC • Eric Bovim (C) • David Copp (C) After years of lobbying, Gonzaga Hockey had its Inaugural Season, with “an up-and-coming group of guys” in the fast-growing Maryland Scholastic Hockey League (MSHL).

e are both proud and fortunate to be part of a Jesuit school. We have faith in Gonzaga’s mission and the opportunities it affords our sons and want to do what we can to be an “ally in the cause of Jesuit education” by helping local organizations we think support Jesuit ideals. We highlight these programs.

FRIENDS OF FORT DUPONT www.fdia.org ort Dupont Ice Arena is the home ice for Gonzaga Hockey, as well as a number of other high school and college programs. Owned by the National Park Service, the arena is the only public indoor ice rink in the city of Washington. Friends of Fort Dupont Ice Arena, Inc. (FOFD) is the nonprofit organization formed to manage and revitalize the rink, located in southeast Washington, DC. In addition to managing the ice arena, FOFD oversees a community skating program which serves over 10,000 neighborhood boys and girls each year. Kids On Ice (KOI) has grown to include elementary and advanced figure skating, instructional ice hockey and, most recently, speed skating. Additionally, KOI offers free skating opportunities to students from 5 to 18 at more than a dozen District of Columbia elementary, middle and secondary schools. Hockey and speedskating equipment are provided for those enrolled in those programs. Instructors include qualified volunteers supervised by professional figure skating, ice hockey and speed skaters. Many area skaters — including local high school ice hockey players — serve as volunteer assistant instructors. During the summer, the rink administers youth skating camps in cooperation with the District of Columbia Department of Parks and Recreation, local Police Boys & Girls Clubs,YMCAs and other East-of-theRiver youth organizations.

GONZAGA HOCKEY STUDY BUDDIES he Gonzaga Hockey Program is committed to resuming our Gonzaga tradition of Men For Others with its support of Study Buddies, an after-school tutoring and mentoring program that partners Gonzaga hockey players with the children in the Fort Dupont community. With the collaboration and direction from the Fort Dupont staff and the Gonzaga’s Christian services, Gonzaga parents and community school leaders, we expect the the program will restart next season and will meet weekly at Fort Dupont Ice Arena classrooms. The program provides enrichment to local Cornerstone School 4th-6th grade students every Monday afternoon before practice from November through April. Our hockey players tutor and spend time with the children. Gonzaga families donate snacks, and the one-on-one sessions are individualized for the needs of each student.

T

USA WARRIORS ICE HOCKEY PROGRAM www.usawarriorshockey.org • www.facebook.com/usawarriors he recipient of the 2019 Purple Puck Community Donation was the USA Warriors Ice Hockey Program. We were thrilled that the USA Warriors Ice Hockey Standing Team was able to participate in an exhibition game during the Purple Puck Tournament, on December 26, 2019. Gonzaga Hockey has been involved with the USA Warriors program since participating in the inaugural game in Dematha’s ongoing American Heroes Hockey Challenge in 2013, as well as by hosting exhibition games during several Purple Puck tournaments. The USA Warriors Ice Hockey Program was founded in 2008 and is designed to give military members and veterans who have been injured or disabled in the course of their service the chance to play ice hockey in an environment that is suited to their needs. The program provides players with hockey equipment and trains them in the skills needed to use the sport of ice hockey as a rehabilitation tool to overcome both physical and mental disabilities sustained in defense of the United States of America.

T

STATESMEN COLLEGE PREPARATORY ACADEMY FOR BOYS www.statesmenboys.org he recipient of the 2018 Purple Puck Tournament community donation was the Statesmen College Preparatory Academy for Boys. Statesmen, a DC Public Charter school located in Ward 7 in Southeast DC, opened in August 2018. The school serves 4th-grade boys and will add a grade each year until it serves 4th-8th grades. The school aims to provide an environment that reimagines, redesigns and recreates the student experience for Black and Latino males specifically. By uniting The Head, The Heart and The Hands, Statesmen builds a pedagogyfocused, relationship-centered school environment designed to give these young men what they need to excel. The Statesmen Academy does RELATIONSHIPS, RIGOR, RELEVANCE and RESILIENCE! For more information; to apply as a student or teacher; or to donate, please go to www.northstarboys.org.

T

GLOBAL SCHOLARS FOUNDATION http://globalscholars.foundation/ he recipient of the 2017 Purple Puck Tournament donation, the Global Scholars Foundation is an education and youth empowerment program of H Street Community Development Corporations. The program strives to provide the youth of its program with the necessary skills to become neighborhood change agents and global influencers. The program provides students ages 14-17 from DC public schools and DC public charter schools an opportunity to broaden their understanding, respect and global competency by learning the culture and language of other countries. Scholars are immersed in a one-year intensive study – delving deeply into the history and culture of select countries. Before our scholars travel anywhere, they set about touring Washington, D.C. to discover their own rich history and the treasures in their backyard. During the course of the program, students travel to other states within the U.S. to absorb regional culture, visit museums, and see exhibits. Scholars also attend literary events featuring local writers; hear elected officials share their vision for the city; and are inspired by teachers and community leaders who support their vision. The teens develop an appreciation for cultural differences; they begin to understand global issues like international conflict, health care, education and environmental concerns. They begin to see themselves as a part of something larger, a part of global solutions.

T

RIDGE ROAD TITANS ridgeroadtitans.com he 2016 Purple Puck Tournament Donation went to the Ridge Road Titans, a youth football program run by the Friends of Ridge Road Recreation Center (FORR) in Southeast DC. FORR is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization that believes in building up our youth through recreation, education, career development and mentorship programs, and by engaging residents and promoting a healthy lifestyle by providing a quality recreation area. The FORR’s mission is to provide a safe environment by cultivating relationships with community members and partnerships with area businesses; to bridge the gap between youth and seniors by establishing a career development tutoring/mentoring program; and to support educational, developmental and athletic programs while implementing community-based projects. With the help of donations from supporters such as you, we are confident that our programs will serve as a catalyst for change and further enhance the lives of those in our community.

FORT DUPONT ICE ARENA is proud to be the home ice rink for the Gonzaga Eagles Ice Hockey Team! In addition to serving as home ice for many of the area’s finest youth hockey clubs, Fort Dupont Ice Arena is also home to the Kids on Ice Program, offering opportunities for kids from 5-18 interested in learning how to skate, hockey, figure skating, synchronized skating and speed skating. Since our humble beginning in 1996, we have grown incredibly, and now serve more than 10,000 kids annually. 2021 is another incredibly successful and busy year for Fort Dupont. We are looking forward to 2022! Fort Dupont Ice Arena is a community gathering area, a safe and welcoming place to anyone and everyone, and a place that so many people feel is home. Our volunteers and staff are like family to the kids whose lives we impacted last year. They are role models, mentors, advisers, approachable, and for some of our kids a consistent adult figure in their life for many years. Our people do an incredible job on and off the ice in providing a fun place for kids to learn life skills in a supportive environment, providing a safe place to both succeed and fail. Our commitment to community is always in the forefront of everything we do. Almost half of our kids come to us from east of the Anacostia River. No child is ever turned away due to inability to pay. The Fort Dupont Ice Arena is one of the premier and oldest athletic facilities in the area. It is completely inclusive and is a melting pot just like our City. Our kids are from differing social, economic, ethnic, and religious backgrounds and not only share the field of play, they learn to work and succeed together on the same team.

All of this would not be possible without your generosity. For us to continue to provide such amazing experiences to thousands of kids, we simply need more help. Help us continue to make a difference.

For more information about Fort Dupont's banner year, its many community initiatives and how you can help, go to www.FDIA.org.
