MESSAGE FROM COACH T Dear Gonzaga Football Family, It’s hard to believe this marks the end of my 3rd calendar year at Gonzaga, but time does indeed fly and we’ve surely had tons of fun! Prior to my arrival on Eye Street, I knew Gonzaga was a place that fostered family through the mission of “Men for Others.” However, it wasn’t until I began living among my fellow Eagle faculty members, students, athletes, parents, and alumni that I realized the depth of the brotherhood that exists at Gonzaga.

“The highest level of collective success can only be achieved when a group is tested and faced with adverse circumstances but possesses the core toughness to persevere due to an unbreakable sense of togetherness forged through steadfast trust. This is Gonzaga Football.”

The football program is an extension of the the school and fosters “Men for Others” through the motto of NEF which many of you know stands for Now-Embrace-Finish. NEF represents the when, why, and how each member of the program should incorporate this notion of “Men for Others” in their lives relative to football. We are “Men for Others” now. The gift of life is too precious to wait until later. The great US Army Master Sergeant Cedric King once said, “The moment knows when you’ve procrastinated and haven’t undergone proper preparation.” We are “Men for Others” because we embrace each other fully. The notion of preparing to compete and then competing for the love of your teammates and coaches and the respect for those who previously played in the purple is the primary motivation each member of our program. We are “Men for Others” from start to finish. Maximum effort, focus, intensity, and enthusiasm through the end. Giving your best effort requires neither talent nor ability, but only needs a passionate and loving heart. The 2016 Gonzaga Football Team embodied Gonzaga’s “Men for Others” through the spirit of NEF! The team was led by a stellar class of 2017 senior group whose many accomplishments and accolades are featured throughout this yearbook. The 2017 group leaves a strong legacy and has helped pave the way for the program to continue its ascension to new heights. This yearbook also shows the profound impact the classes of 2018-2020 had on the season. It’s exciting for everyone in our football family to envision how strong we can be in the coming seasons. This yearbook displays a plethora of words and images indicative of success. However, it most importantly conveys clearly the spirit of Gonzaga and the driving force of when, why, and how these young men have achieved such success. I’m truly blessed to be the Head Football Coach of the Gonzaga Eagles. 2016 was indeed an unforgettable journey and an experience I will cherish for the rest of my life. May God bless everyone in our purple football family and in the entire Gonzaga community!

Love, Randy Trivers

Upon returning to D.C. after Mercersburg, the Eagles engaged in 2 highly competitive scrimmages. The first was against St. Frances of Baltimore, MD and the second was against Paint Branch of Burtonsville, MD. Although it was clear that there was much work to be done in preparation for our season opener, the Eagles displayed exciting flashes for the things that lay ahead in the 2016 season. he season’s 1st triumph came against Viera High School, Florida’s 2015 Class 7A State Runner-Up. This victory was not without a plethora of challenges relating to inclement weather and travel conditions. The team arrived at its Cocoa, Florida destination at 5:30am which was 18 hours after the originally scheduled arrival time! With just over 12 hours prior to kickoff, the Eagles did a fine job of maintaining their focus in preparing for the Saturday evening showdown. Although behind on the scoreboard in the 2nd half, the Eagles maintained their composure by taking the lead and never looking back in route to a 31-19 victory. The atmosphere featured great weather, a hospitable and huge home crowd, an enthusiastic marching band and cheerleaders, and of course our passionate purple faithful! The Eagles were led offensively by #2 RB Tyree Randolph (’17) who had a monster performance with 281 yards rushing and an additional 41 yards receiving. Randolph’s efforts were aided by an offensive line led by #73 OL Captain Johnny Jordan (’17). The defense was led by #10 DB Captain Joe Zuccari (’17) who had 2 interceptions on the evening. The team and families were warmly welcomed to celebrate Mass at Divine Mercy Church in Merritt Island, Florida. Following Mass, the team joined families for some sun and fun on the beach!

“It

definitely stems from Coach T, and all of the

other coaches. We all have complete faith in him that he has our best interests at heart. He always articulates to us that he loves us like we’re his own kids.

Another big factor, I think, is just the time we’re together - we’re here,

we’re here day in and day out: four days a week in the summer, an entire week at Mercersburg, day in and day out during the school year - you are with these guys, you’re struggling with these guys that become your brothers. And you’re all going through the same stuff. So you really just learn to trust one another because he’s going through the same thing you are.

You have to lean on him, and he has to lean on you. And you really have to pick each other up - I think that really helps us have that real sense of trust as a team.”

If you do let someone down on your [Scholar Baller] team, everyone knows. You want to do well in “

“We’re

And for the first time ever, the Washington Post streamed a sporting event live on Facebook. Additionally, six new members were inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame, including three football greats (see page 26). Gonzaga jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter. RB Randolph scored as the Eagles took advantage of a short field after Nick DeChristopher (‘18)’s blocked punt, recovery, and return inside the 20 yard line of the Falcons. Another huge special teams play occured on the ensuing kickoff as a perfectly placed kick turned into an onsides recovery for Aaron Douoguih (‘18). QB Brown connected with WR Dean Engram (‘19) on 3rd and Goal to push the lead to 14-0. Good Counsel got on the board early in the 2nd quarter, but Randolph added another TD to give Gonzaga a 20-7 lead at half. Gonzaga came out strong in the second half in all three phases. The defense held Good Counsel to no points. The special teams converted a field goal, caused a turnover, and downed a punt inside the 5 yard line. moved up to varsity as a sophomore, to play for Hall of Fame Coach Maus Collins and eventually became the starting running back midway through the 1992 season. Rob became a two-way starter his junior year, starting at defensive end in the 1993 and 1994 seasons. As a junior, he ran for more than 1,100 yards and 16 touchdowns and helped the Eagles to a 9-2 record. He improved on those numbers as a senior when, as a team co-captain, he amassed more than 1,300 yards and 17 touchdowns, helping the Eagles to another 9-2 season. All-WCAC Honorable Mention as a sophomore year and First Team All-WCAC as a junior and senior. He was the Washington, D.C., Gatorade Player of the Year; a Second Team Washington Post All-Met; a member of the George Michael Sports Machine Golden 11; a First Team Running Back for the Pigskin Club of Washington, D.C., and The Pigskin Club’s winner of the Rodney P. made his way to Eye Street where he met the legendary Coach Joe Kozik in 1974. In the fall of 1979, Coach Mark Gowin took the reins of the varsity football program with Joe as one of his most trusted assistants. Their teams won more than fifty games over the next ten seasons. During those years, Coach Ranalli worked with many outstanding young players, including fellow Gonzaga Hall of Famers Edgar Davis ’83, Chris Minear ’83, Scott McCaleb ’84, Marcus Cherry ’85, Gary McIntosh ’86, Kenny Miles ’88, and the entire 1982 varsity football team. Joe also helped coach Gonzaga’s baseball teams and led the Eagles to multiple winning seasons.

by his own admission, did not have “a whole lot of stats, but I did start all ten games as a senior on the defensive line on a team that went 7-2-1.” During his sophomore year at Catholic he began the second phase of his athletic career in coaching when he came back to coach football at Gonzaga. Joe served as either an assistant or head coach at the freshman, JV, and varsity levels from 1986 to 2000. Joe also coached the Gonzaga golf teams, serving as the Head JV Coach and Assistant Varsity Coach from 1991-1999. The varsity Eagles compiled more than forty wins during that time. In 2001, the AD position became open - and Joe filled it. And from 2007-2009 he was also Gonzaga’s Head Football Coach, earning WCAC Coach of the Year in 2009. In his 16 years as the Athletic Director, Gonzaga athletic teams have won 82 league championships, 12 Metro Championships, 10 national championships, and 11 D.C. State Championships. All of this success brought national attention, as Sports Illustrated magazine ranked Gonzaga’s athletic program #1 in Washington, D.C., and #18 in the entire country in 2008.

The first went to to WR Dean Engram (‘19) and another to WR Max Fisher (‘17), giving Gonzaga the lead 2414 at half. QB Sam Brown (‘17) threw for 236 of his 281 passing yards before the break. A touchdown on the opening drive of the second half by RB Tyree Randolph (‘17) was followed by one for St. John’s, but the Eagles would get another on interception return by LB Jason Labbe II (‘18) to make the score 38-21 going into the 4th. This also marked the 1st time in Gonzaga’s history that a football game would be played under stadium lights as the lights were needed in the 4th quarter of the late afternoon November kickoff. The Honorable William J. Rowan III ‘57 was honored as a St. Aloysius Medal Recepient on on Sunday, October 16, 2016, at Georgetown University. This annual celebration is a way to thank benefactors who have been particularly generous to Gonzaga while paying tribute to several honorees who have demonstrated remarkable service to the school and the broader community. Judge Rowan is a long time Athletic Hall of Fame Inductee.

S I G N I N G DAY 2017

FEBRUARY 1, 2017 ~ CARMODY CENTER

“A college football commitment is a ‘two-way’ street for a multitude of reasons. The opportunity to commit is well deserved because it’s been hard-earned. It requires extraordinary devotion for a Gonzaga College High School football player to procure an opportunity to commit to a university. Foremost, the Eagle puts forth an exceptional academic commitment. Secondly, the commitment requires tremendous dedication to athletic preparation and performance. Most importantly, the opportunity to commit reflects how a true man for others has committed to EAGLES l l FOOTBALL 2016 GONZAGA EAGLES FOOTBALL 2016 4646GONZAGA

giving the best he has to offer to classmates, teammates, family, and the Gonzaga community in the spirit of God. It is indeed an honor for me as educator, coach, and mentor to have our football culture impacted by such a multitalented human being. I am immensely proud to witness the growth, development, and ascendance of each young man. Each Eagle has flown high and will undoubtedly fly even higher in his remaining time at Gonzaga as well as in his future beyond his time on Eye Street.” -Coach T on making an NCAA Commitment www.gonzaga.org/football www.gonzaga.org/football
