PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear Gonzaga Football Fans,
T
oday we are excited to continue one of the longest running rivalries in Washington DC sports, Gonzaga vs. St. John’s, at this 103rd meeting of these two teams. This is a day dedicated to good sportsmanship, great football, and an outstanding WCAC tradition.
Each year the football season helps kick off our academic year; a hope-filled year of growth in grace, age, and wisdom through a variety of anticipated and surprising victories. This year is a poignant one for both St. John’s and Gonzaga, as we mourn the loss of two deeply respected members of our athletic communities. Today, we join St. John’s in remembering Mr. Artie Bryant, a beloved coach and member of the St. John’s Basketball program, who passed away unexpectedly on September 6, 2023. As our entire Gonzaga Community continues to gratefully remember Mr. Joe Reyda ’85, Gonzaga’s long-time Athletic Director, and former football coach, who unexpectedly passed away on June 27, 2023. Joe loved all things Gonzaga and especially Gonzaga Athletics. Both men continue to be deeply missed, yet their devotion and tireless example of service to our respective schools will long be remembered. On behalf of our Headmaster, Mr. Tom Every, our acting Athletic Director Mr. Jim Kilroy, and our entire Gonzaga Community, I would like to express gratitude to all of those participating in this historic football game, your hard work and persistent dedication are respected and deeply appreciated. I hold special gratitude for the families who do so much to help make Gonzaga the extraordinary school community we all know and deeply value. In addition, I amgrateful to the coaches who instruct, encourage, and guide our fine young men. Finally, I continue to pray that the spirit of St. Aloysius Gonzaga may inspire each and every student-athlete to do his best, to give his best, both on and off of the field. Sincerely, with every best wish,
Fr. Joseph E. Lingan, SJ ‘75 President

HEAD COACH’S MESSAGE Dear Gonzaga Community,
F
irm, stable, in shape, and not hollow are all defining terms for SOLID. Coach Reyda would often use “SOLID” to describe a student-athlete, coach or an alum who possessed high aptitude, competence, depth and consistency. Ironically, Joe Reyda may have been the most rock-solid of them all. In fact, Coach Reyda was so solid, he would often be there for me during the moments I lacked firmness, stability, shapeliness, or fullness. Our offices were adjacent and we spent many hours working alongside each other, as I witnessed a rock-SOLID leader guide a SOLID athletic department. However, there is a particular distinguishable moment I recall taking place in a different “office” space. On November 18, 2018, I was standing on the 42 yard line on the sideline at Catholic University with 4 seconds remaining in the WCAC Championship game. Coach Reyda was somewhere nearby, prepared to support myself, our coaches, and student-athletes, regardless of the outcome. Perhaps the most thrilling 4 seconds in Gonzaga Football history would unfold with Caleb Williams launching a 53 yard touchdown pass to John Marshall on the game’s final play giving Gonzaga a 46-43 victory and the WCAC Championship. After seeing the ball land somewhere in the endzone amongst a bevy of Gonzaga and DeMatha players, I waited for the referee’s signal to confirm the result. As I saw the official’s arms signal touchdown, I collapsed at the 42 yard line a few yards onto the playing field. Joe Reyda was the 1st person to embrace me and physically lift me off the turf. While doing so he is shouting, “He caught it! He caught it! We won, Coach We won! “ Joe Reyda was SOLID. He was always there for us to lean on and he was always there to pick us up when we were down. Joe Reyda left Gonzaga’s athletic community with a firm, stable, shapley, full and SOLID forever foundation. FAITH & LOVE, Randy Trivers Head Football Coach

In Loving Memory of Joseph J. Reyda ‘85 Joe Reyda ’85 was a beloved and instrumental member of our school community. He began coaching football at Gonzaga while still a college student at Catholic University, and returned full time to his Alma Mater as a member of the Dean of Students Office and assistant football coach in 1989. In 2001, he became Gonzaga’s Athletic Director, leading the athletic department through a period of enormous growth and success. In his 22 years as AD, the school won 183 league or state championships. In recent years, Joe oversaw the coaching staffs of 41 teams in 17 sports, shaping the Gonzaga experience of thousands of young men. And following his final season, just weeks after his death, the Washington Post named Gonzaga the best boys private athletic program in the D.C. area – a fitting tribute to everything he gave to help Gonzaga, and all Gonzaga student-athletes, thrive. Joe with his two daughters, Molly and Caroline, and wife Tricia.
For many years, Joe, his father, and his brothers provided compassionate care for his mother, who suffered from Multiple Sclerosis.
In the weeks following Joe’s passing, Michael Devereaux (quoted in the Gonzaga Magazine linked via the QR Code to the left) seeded a scholarship fund to honor his friend, and to perpetuate Joe’s memory on Eye Street. Named the Joseph Reyda ’85 Endowed Scholarship Fund, it will support tuition assistance for future students. Gonzaga and the Reyda family are grateful for Michael’s generosity. To support deserving Gonzaga students in Joe’s honor with a gift to the fund, please visit Gonzaga.org/EndowedFunds (or use the QR Code to the right). gonzaga.org/football
