PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear Gonzaga Football Fans,

G

onzaga is extremely proud of our long, proud, and successful tradition of football on Eye Street. In particular, we are grateful for the graduating seniors, the class of 2019, who led our team to the first Washington Catholic Athletic Conference Championship title since 2002. Congratulations to Coach Trivers and the entire football program on completing an amazing season that we will never forget. As we prepare for the 2019 season this fall, I am confident that our teams are poised to carry on the Gonzaga tradition of winning on and off of the field.

“In particular, we are grateful for the graduating seniors, the class of 2019.”

Playing in the WCAC, considered one of the premier high school athletic conferences in the nation, our Eagles face tough competition every time they take the field. While we would love to win all of our games, what is most important is the dedication, teamwork, selflessness, and excellent sportsmanship that our teams exhibit in victory and in defeat. In the end, it is the character of our Gonzaga community that matters most. That sense of community has grown even stronger in my eight years as President. I see our students, faculty, and staff supporting each other continuously in all of their various endeavors, whether academic, athletic, artistic, spiritual, or professional. This is one of the many things that makes Eye Street so remarkable. I am especially grateful to all of our players and coaches for their loyalty and commitment to Gonzaga. Thank you for your support of our football teams and may God bless you all. Sincerely, Rev. Stephen W. Planning, SJ President

HEADMASTER’S MESSAGE Dear Gonzaga Football Fans,

C

ongratulations to the 2018-2019 Gonzaga Varsity Football Team on their 10th straight playoff appearance and their first WCAC Championship since 2002. Students and coaches alike should be proud of one of the best football seasons in school history! Legendary football coach Vince Lombardi once said, “Individual commitment to a group effort - that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.” To me, this quote demonstrates the total team mentality required in the sport of football and in life. We saw this mentality demonstrated by our young men this year. To successfully make it through a school year balancing a commitment to faith, family, school and athletics is no easy task. I know that our boys consistently give their time and effort, not for personal glory, but for the benefit of the “group,” be it on the football field, in the classroom, at home or in the larger community. Therefore, by definition, a Gonzaga football player is a man for others. It is always a good idea to reflect on the role of sports in a Jesuit school. Athletics at Gonzaga is about being generous with one’s God-given talents and life lessons like dedication, committment, and sacrifice. The hard work a studentathlete puts into the season is for the team, our school, and the season’s goal. Athletics is a part of cura personalis – the hallmark of Jesuit education – care of the whole person. Gonzaga forms young men who are well-rounded in body, mind, and spirit; young men who learn that giving one hundred percent is more important than wins and losses. The experiences of our students on the gridiron, in the classroom, and on retreats and Christian service projects, all work together in their respective formation into outstanding young men.

“Students and coaches alike should be proud of one of the best football seasons in school history!”

On behalf of the students and faculty, Gonzaga’s football players and coaches, I want to thank you all for your support of this program and for helping to make athletics such a positive experience for so many. The lessons our students can learn in a program such as this will last them a lifetime. Congratulations to all the coaches and players! Go Eagles! Sincerely, Thomas K. Every II Headmaster

Dear Gonzaga Football Family,

W

hat an amazing season! Although the 2018 season stands alone as a magnificent story, it also represents the final leg of the 5 year journey that began at Catholic University in June of 2014 and culminated at precisely the same location on November 18, 2018. As with most extraordinary expeditions, there exists unforeseen adversity prompting course alterations. Challenges are not meant to be easy; however, they are necessary for growth. Most importantly is the manner in which we cope with inevitable challenges. Those familiar with our program know how we prefer to EMBRACE challenges in the spirit of NEF.

HEAD COACH’S MESSAGE

I’m not certain if I’ve ever witnessed or experienced a more profound example of NEF than the 2018 Gonzaga College High School Football Eagles. This NEF spirit was specifically fueled by FAITH and LOVE. Our program also leans heavily upon the motto of T3 which places TRUST and TOGETHERNESS at the very top of the list for building a successful team. The TRUST we develop is part of our FAITH and the TOGETHERNESS we forge stems from LOVE. During the journey, TRUST and TOGHETHERNESS undergo constant challenges which ultimately require emotional, psychological, physical, and spiritual TOUGHNESS. The 2018 Eagles began the season with 6 decisive victories and did so against formidable competition. However, as stated earlier, adversity is inevitable and challenge is a growth requirement. Sure enough, we lost 3 of the next 4 football games. Yet this collection of people would somehow remain steadfast in the moment of NOW while continuing to EMBRACE each other through the FINISH. The TRUST and TOGETHERNESS never waivered, as we avenged our week 10 loss in dramatic fashion against supposedly insurmountable odds. The WCAC semifinal victory could only be achieved through FAITH and LOVE. Finally, we had an opportunity to return to the turf of where we started 5 years ago; the location of our first practice in 2014 in addition to being the site of our first DC State Championship since 1959. November 18th’s atmosphere was uniquely mystical as there was a plethora of passionate supporters in attendance observing a multitude of spectacular moments, featuring highly skilled competitors. TRUST and FAITH were surely tested as we were down 3 touchdowns in the 1st quarter, down by 15 points in the game’s final quarter, and down by 3 points with no timeouts with under 60 seconds remaining facing 3rd and 33! Thus taking the lead for the very 1st time with 29 seconds remaining after battling back from deficit after deficit over the course of the season and in this game in particular was indescribably gratifying. Unfortunately, to lose the lead just a few seconds later was equally devastating for all of us who were pulling for the purple.

“The FAITH and LOVE forged in the Eagles was 5 years in the making and taken to the utmost heights in 2018.”

The ups and downs and the adversities of life are indeed inevitable. The 2018 Gonzaga Eagles were the living embodiment of NOW-EMBRACE-FINISH-TOUGHNESS-TOGETHERNESSTRUST. Fueled by genuine FAITH and true LOVE, magical things are possible. The FAITH and LOVE forged in the Eagles was 5 years in the making and taken to the utmost heights in 2018. There is nothing stronger and more powerful than FAITH and LOVE. It’s certainly debatable as to whether or not God is purple. Either way, I’m sure the SACRIFICE and daily commitment of FAITHFULLY performing LOVING deeds as men and women for others makes it possible to win with no time remaining. FAITH & LOVE, Randy Trivers Head Football Coach gonzaga.org/football

On Sunday, September 2, the team attended a service to honor Bobbi S. Engram, senior captain Dean Engram’s sister. Bobbi had battled sickle cell disease for most of her life, and passed away on August 25. We continue to shower the Engram Family with our love and support. The Engrams thank everyone for their thoughts, prayers, communication, and especially for their presence at Sunday’s celebration of life. At the service, Dean said, “Within her casket, it says ‘An Angel Has Returned to God.’ And she was nothing short of an angel: she was my rock, my inspiration, my hero and my strength.” As the team journeyed through the 2018 season, FAITH and LOVE became the theme for the year. At the banquet celebration on January 27, 2019, the team unveiled a tribute video. The film was dedicated to the memories of Bobbi, Bertille R. Bridgeman, Jason Labbe, Charles J. Baumgardner, Stuart J. Long ‘60, John C. “Doc” Warman ‘57, and Dominik L. Pettey ‘15. Additionally, the Eagles were inspired by the courage and belief of Scott McCaleb ‘85, Jake Simmons IV ‘65, and Ronnie Trivers (Coach Trivers’s father). To culminate the banquet, a new award was introduced in Bobbi’s name to honor perseverence and excellence in all things. The inaugural Bobbi S. Engram NEF Award was awarded to her brother, Dean for his outstanding career and leadership on and off of the field.

MCKENNA CENTER EVENT

On Friday, June 29, Gonzaga’s football program had the honor of visiting the Marine Corps Base in Quantico, VA. Gonzaga football alum Col. Joseph Murray ‘85 (pictured right with Coach Trivers) hosted the team. Approximately 40 Eagle players and coaches received the opportunity to learn invaluable lessons from the numerous members of the Marine Corps. The day began with inspirational insight on the idea of always “Building a Strong Foundation, First” in anything that we do. Next, the team was able to participate in a number of computer training simulations within the base, as well as be trained in hand-to-hand combat excercises. Ultimately, the entire experience was not just an excercise in team building and togetherness, it was an opportunity of a life time that helped each young man present grow in his appreciation for our devoted armed forces. After the final stages of the tour, the group enjoyed a meal in Raider Hall with Col. Murray and number of other Marines. A tradition that began in 2014, Coach T’s first year, a highlight of the preseason was the first practice on the Capitol on August 1 (pictured above right). A tradition that no other football team in the world is able to experience. The preparation for the season opener intensified following our return from Mercersburg. Retired Army Colonel, Jake Simmons IV ‘65 (pictured left) addressed the team before our scrimmage versus Bishop O’Connell on August 8. He encouraged the team saying, “When faced with challenges, ADAPT and OVERCOME. NEF.”

he Eagles look forward to at least one out-of-town trip each fall. In recent years the team has traveled to Viera, FL and to Philadelpia, PA. This year’s trip was to Virginia Beach, VA to play the Bishop Sullivan Catholic High School Crusaders. After departing from Eye Street on Thursday, August 30, the team stopped at William & Mary College (pictured below) for practice before proceeding to the team hotel at the beach. The next morning began with an informal prayer service for senior captain Dean Engram and his family, who were mourning the recent passing of Dean’s sister, Bobbi. After the service and breakfast, the team held a walk-through on the sand. That night, the game was delayed two hours due to thunderstorms in the area. The Eagles remained focused and won big, 38-0, behind two defensive touchdowns. The first came midway thru the first quarter on a fumble recovery and return from senior captain Loic Sangwa, and the second came on the ensuing possesion on an interception return by Colin O’Connor ‘20. Kye Holmes ‘21 helped lead the defensive shutout while Rodney Faulk ‘20 turned in a great performance on special teams. The offensive production was lead by junior offensive lineman Luke Petitbon.

“The support from the parents was phenomenal once again this year. I am grateful for our ability to embrace one another in the most trying times. Dean’s decision to be with us, day in and day out, in honor of his sister, inspired us all and strengthened our belief in our ability to overcome all obstacles.” -Coach T WEEKLY AWARDS

BEYOND THE FIELD Dear Gonzaga Football Family,

T

here are not enough words to express how fulfilling my four years on Eye Svtreet have been. It has been an incredible experience to serve as the student body president while being a part of the football family. We accomplished our greatest goal this year and we couldn’t have imagined a better finish, both on and off the field. My football brothers in particular, did some amazing things outside of the gridiron this year. In the world of service, we had multiple guys serve as retreat leaders. Also, the entire team participated in service of the less fortunate and marginalized in one way or another. As far as the arts and performance, football players recited poems at school assemblies, excelled in the annual speech contest, performed in the spring musical, created an awesome sculpture, and starred in the choral arts and band concerts. Extra curricular activities on the team included participation in the Model UN, the ONYX Club, the Aquilian, the Yearbook, the National Honors Society and of course the Student Government. Academically, many of my teammates were honored at Charter Day for their great work in the classroom and many just successfully finished AP exams. I have come to realize that my fours years have turned all of Gonzaga and those connected to it into a large family. The support the community showed us through out the season and into the last seconds of our championship game shows just how much love and togetherness is fostered on Eye Street. We began the Purple Reign of 2018-2019 and it continued into the winter and spring. It has been a historic year that we will never forget. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your support of all we do, on and off of the field. I will vforever love and miss this family. Hail Gonzaga! The Peddie School Falcons from New Jersey wanted to avenge their lone defeat in 2017. Gonzaga came out strong, marching 68 yards in 15 plays to take the early lead behind great blocking from junior Olu Fashanu and a four-yard touchdown run by Lucas Warfield ‘19. The defense forced a three-and-out on the ensuing possession, which led to a blocked punt by Brian Collins ‘19, and on the very next play Aaron Turner ‘20 scampered in from 25 yards out to extend the lead to 14-0 midway through the first quarter. After a long drive from the Falcons that yielded no points, the Eagles struck quickly on a 19 yard TD pass from Caleb Williams ‘21 to Turner. The visitors got on the board on a eight-yard touchdown run, making the halftime score 20-7. Coming out of halftime, Joseph Weté ‘19 intercepted a screen pass on the third play. The turnover led to another quick strike from Williams. This time Sam Sweeney ‘19 was on the receiving end, scoring from 41 yards out to make it 27-7. The Eagles would lead 30-7 early in the fourth after a Marko Kemp ‘19 field goal and hold on to improve to 5-0 on the year.

We defeated the Archbishop Carroll Lions 48-12 on Friday, September 29 in front of an energetic Homecoming crowd under the lights. Lucas Warfield ‘19 opened up the scoring with a 10 yard touchdown run, but the extra point was missed. The Lions impressively marched down the field to tie the game 6-6 midway through the first quarter. It was all Eagles for the remainder of the first half with sophomore quarterback Caleb Williams running in for a touchdown from three yards out and tossing three scores to three different Eagle receivers (Dean Engram ‘19, John Marshall ‘19, and Sam Sweeney ‘19). Sophomore defensive back Jalen McMurray intercepted a pass and ran it back for another Eagle score to make it 42-6 at halftime. Junior runningback Malcolm Terry got in the endzone in the second half before the Lions scored late. Derrick Aikens ‘20 had a great game on special teams, while Engram had an incredible interception to go along with his offensive touchdown. The team improved to 6-0 heading into WCAC Capital Division play. gonzaga.org/football

Gonzaga lead 14-7 at halftime; but after an incredible interception by Jalen McMurray ‘21, the Falcons picked off a third down pass and returned it for a pick-six to tie the game early in the 3rd quarter. The Eagles lead 21-17 early in the 4th, before giving up the go ahead TD pass on a 4th and goal from the 5 yard line. The Falcons got another pick-six on the ensuing Eagle offensive possession to take a 10 point lead. After a long drive, the Eagles scored to make it 31-28 with 1:55 left but could not recover the onsides kick. GC broke a long run to make it 38-28, and then Eagles drove quickly to get into scoring range. Needing two scores, Marco Kemp ‘19 connected on a 24 yard field goal with :29 left; but his second onsides kick attempt was unsuccessful, ending the game. gonzaga.org/football

3 OT October 12

With a national spotlight on the game, the Eagles scored on their first drive to take a 7-0 lead. DeMatha missed a field goal in the 1st quarter but found pay dirt in the second to tie that game at 7-7 going into halftime. The game remained tied throughout the second half, and Gonzaga’s hail-mary attempt to end regulation was intercepted. The Eagles scored first behind a Caleb Williams ‘21 TD run, but the Stags would score back-to-back TDs to take a 21-14 lead in the second OT period. Williams scored again on the ground to send the game into a third OT, but DeMatha intercepted a pass in the endzone. The Stags scored a walk-off TD on the next play from scrimmage to hand the Eagles their second straight heartbreaking WCAC Capital Division defeat.

Coming off of the two tough losses, the Eagles used their bye week to get healthy, focus on academics, and serve at Campus Kitchens from Monday to Thursday (pictured below). To culminate the bye week, the Eagles partook in valuable experiences on Friday, October 26. The senior football players and coaching staff gathered for the Senior Feast, which is an annual gathering of the seniors and coaching staff at the Trivers family home. The event includes various opportunities for members of the program to reflect, share, understand and appreciate Gonzaga Football legacy and traditions (pictured above). Earlier in the day, the entire team travelled to George Washington Hospital to host a conference on Sickle Cell Disease (see page 30).

SICKLE CELL CONFERENCE @ GW

O

n Friday, October 26, the team travelled to George Washington Hospital to partake in a conference on Sickle Cell Disease. Senior captain Dean Engram lost his sister to the disease in August. Dr. Jehan El-Bayoumi, Executive Director of Rodham Institute at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences and a friend of Coach Jake Simmons ‘65, hosted the event and acted as the panel facilitator. Dean and his mother, Deanna Engram, participated in the panel. After the event, Dr. El-Bayoumi wrote a letter to the Gonzaga coaching staff, which said in part: The conference which was attended by medical students, residents and faculty in Internal Medicine entitled “Sickle Cell: A Personal Story” was a moving and meaningful experience for all who attended. I spoke to several people afterwards and they so appreciated the courage, grace and generosity of Dean and his mother Mrs. Engram. They are truly inspirational. Bobbi, may she rest in peace, was an incredible force of nature. I’m sad that I and the world didn’t have a chance to know her. ...making a difference in health equity begins with humanizing the people we serve and not simply looking at a human being as a disease. Words matter, relationships matter, actions matter. In the field of sickle cell disease and other chronic illnesses which impact African Americans disproportionately, our health care system should and must do better in giving the excellent care that everyone deserves. Pictured from left to right above are: Coach Trivers, Dean Engram, Deanna Engram, Dr. Jehan El-Bayoumi, Mrs. Kristina Williams, Dr. Alan Wasserman, Coach Simmons IV ‘65, and Dr. Jeffrey Akman. Dr. Bruno Petinaux (not pictured), the Chief Medical Officer of The George Washington University Hospital, welcomed the team to start the conference. Gonzaga alum Dr. Matt Tagieri ‘04 (not pictured) was also in attendance. The experience brought the team together in a special way. The Engram’s courage and strength was and continues to be a shining example of how faith and love can carry us through our toughest moments.

The win secured a playoff spot in the WCAC’s Capital Division playoffs--the league moved to two tiers in 2018. The upper division is comprised of Gonzaga, DeMatha, Good Counsel, Bishop McNamara, and St. John’s while the Metro Division includes Archbishop Carroll, Bishop Ireton, Bishop O’Connnell, Paul VI, and St. Mary’s Ryken. Gonzaga took an early 10-0 lead, but the Mustangs made it 10-7 early in the 2nd quarter. Seniors Loic Sangwa and John Marshall scored touchdowns before halftime to give the team a 24-7 lead at the break. McNamara moved the ball in the second half but could not find the endzone. Lucas Warfield ‘19 and Sangwa both scored rushing touchdowns while Josh Williams ‘21 and Joseph Weté ‘19 led the defense. SENIOR DAY SETS

W

ith the 2018 WCAC playoff matchups set prior to Senior Day, the 96th Game of our nation’s oldest Catholic high school football rivalry was essentially the first half of an eight quarter game. At the annual Go Gonzaga Beat St. John’s Pep Rally (pictured at bottom) on November 2, Coach Trivers asked the student body if they were willing to invest in our team over the following eight days. And to truly invest and earn something worthwhile, he explained, “we must be willing to SACRIFICE!” The students were all-in to support the team over two weeks, and they left the gym fired up! The next day was a special atmosphere on Eye Street as over 500 alumni returned to celebrate their class reunions, and over 2,500 packed the stadium. And for the first time in decades, Game 10 of the regular season versus the Cadets was played on Buchanan Field. St. John’s led 27-3 at halftime, but the Eagles, using adjusted gameplans, dominated play in the second half. Although the team could not pull off the comeback, the visiting crowd rushing the field in celebration provided fuel for the Eagles to prepare for the rematch that would take place on Military Road just one week later. The team and the student section passionately let the alma mater echo ever proudly as they left the field knowing that the stage was set for the playoffs.

T

he Eagles knew that “NOW” was all that mattered in the WCAC Semifinal, and they travelled to Military Road with extreme confidence. After falling to the Cadets the week before on Eye Street, the team returned the favor with a perfectly executed game plan on a blustery afternoon. Keeping possession of the ball for the majority of the game, Gonzaga relied on a strong running game and timely passes to eat up yards and keep the St. John’s offense off the field. After a fumble recovery by Kye Holmes ’21, the Eagles ensuing 15 play drive ended with a Marco Kemp ‘19 field goal just before the end of the first quarter to give Gonzaga a 3-0 lead. Gonzaga’s offense produced another 15 play drive in the second quarter, but Caleb Williams ‘21 was stripped on the 5-yard line, and the Cadets returned the fumble to make the score 6-3 SJC at halftime. The teams traded punts to start the second half and the Eagles connected on a flea-flicker pass to John Marshall ‘19 to get within scoring range. Williams took a QB keeper into the endzone to make it 10-6 Gonzaga. Senior captain Sean Johns got a sack on the next drive to force a St. John’s punt that Dean Engram ‘19 returned 48 yards for another score, making the lead 17-6 heading into the 4th quarter. After the Cadets scored and got the 2-point conversion with 4:06 left in the game, the Eagles were unable to run out the clock and were forced to punt. St. John’s drove inside the Gonzaga 10-yard line when Johns and Hunter Stewart ‘19 combined to stop the SJC runningback in his tracks allowing Aaron Davis ‘19 to strip the ball and return it 94 yards for game-clinching TD. The whistle was not blown for forward progress, and the habit to always remain in the moment and to finish earned a trip back to the championship game.

he clock read :04 with the Eagles 53 yards away from the endzone and trailing by three points to DeMatha on a cold Sunday night at Catholic University. Sophomore quarterback Caleb Williams bounced up and back and then back up into the pocket before launching the Hail Mary pass 68 yards into the air (pictured below), dropping it perfectly into the hands of senior wide receiver John Marshall amidst four Stag defenders and senior teammate Justin Ball, giving the Eagles their first title since 2002. Williams accounted for 480 of the Eagles 530 yards on offense. He was 13-29 for 359 yards through the air, carried the ball 20 times for 122 yards on the ground, and caught one pass for nine yards. He had a hand in all seven Gonzaga touchdowns on the night as he threw for three, ran for three, and caught one. The Eagles were down 20-0 at the end of the first quarter but rallied back to within six behind a one yard QB sneak for a touchdown and 37 yard touchdown pass to Aaron Turner ‘21. The Stags would respond to close the half with another score, but the PAT was no good making their lead 26-14. Gonzaga had one more shot at points before the half, but Williams’s pass was intercepted on the goalline.

After going three and out to open the second half, the Eagles got a stop on defense to get the ball back on their own 13 yard line. Seventeen plays later, Gonzaga found the endzone on the reverse pass from Marshall to Williams. DeMatha responded once again, scoring on a 16 yard pass on their next drive to make their lead 33-21 going into the fourth quarter. The Eagles went three and out to start the fourth quarter, giving the ball back to the Stags. This time, the defense held DeMatha to a field goal making the score 36-21 with 7:47 left, setting the stage for the furious comeback from Gonzaga. A mix of running and passing from Williams led to his 25 yard touchdown run with 5:46 left in the game. The two-point conversion attempt failed making the score 36-27 Stags. Desperately needing a turnover, senior defensive end Joseph Weté forced a fumble that was recovered by senior linebacker Aaron Davis on the DeMatha 31-yard line. Four plays later, Williams was in the endzone again, running it in from 20 yards out. The PAT was no good, making the score 36-33 Stags with 3:03 remaining. The defense got a great stop to force DeMatha to punt with 1:57 left. Facing a third down and 33 yards to go, Williams connected with senior wide receiver Sam Sweeney (pictured left) on a 50 yard completion to put the Eagles in position to take the lead with under a minute to go. Senior wide receiver Dean Engram appeared to catch the go-ahead score on the next play but was ruled out of bounds. Gonzaga did not flinch, as Williams found Sweeney again for the 11 yard touchdown to cap off the eight-play, 69-yard drive. The PAT was good, and the Eagles led for the first time on the night, 40-36 with :29 remaining.

After being backed up for a questionable celebration penalty, the Eagles elected to squib kick on the ensuing kickoff. DeMatha returned the kick 73 yards for a seemingly back-breaking touchdown to give the Stags the 43-40 lead with :15 left on the clock. Gonzaga again remainded focused on the moment and got a 27-yard return on the kickoff from Engram to give them a shot at getting into Hail Mary range with :10 left. On the next play, Engram caught a 13-yard pass and got out of bounds to stop the clock with :04 left to give the Eagles one last prayer. The improbable championship-clinching 53 yard touchdown pass from Williams to Marshall ensued and sent the purple faithful into a frenzy! The win, being called The Best High School Football Game Ever Played by many, gave Head Coach Randy Trivers his first WCAC Championship in his fifth year leading the program. The championship game’s dramatic finish got national and global recognition, from ESPN to Good Morning America. Father Planning, Gonzaga President, wrote, “I couldn’t be more proud of the boys themselves who, despite all obstacles, never gave in and perhaps proved that God is indeed purple with this miraculous ending!”
