Game 1: Opener versus Florida Power
Gonzaga - 33 Am. Heritage (FL) - 14 August 30
EAGLES TAKE DOWN FLORIDA POWER
Gonzaga football opened the 2019 season with a strong 33-14 win over American Heritage on Friday, August 30 in front of an electric crowd on Eye Street! After trailing 7-0, Gonzaga got on the board with a 20 yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Caleb Williams to tie the game at 7-7 midway through the first quarter. Heritage responded with another score to take a 14-7 lead into the second quarter. The Eagles responded with 1 yard run from Williams to tie the game at 14-14. It seemed like the back and forth scoring affair would continue, but Jalen McMurray ‘21 intercepted a Heritage pass deep in Eagles territory; and on the very next play, Aaron Turner ‘21 took a screen pass 86 yards to give Gonzaga its first lead of the night. On the ensuing kickoff, Heritage muffed the bouncing ball and Colin O’Connor ‘20 made the crucial recovery with just under 1 minute left in the half. Three plays later, Williams scored with his legs from 10 yards out to give the Eagles a 27-14 lead going into halftime. And on the first drive of the second half, senior captain and runningback Malcolm Terry II scored from 7 yards out. Defensive end Rodney Faulk ‘20 led the team effort with a stellar defensive of performance -- notching two sacks, a tackle for loss, and a forced fumble.
