B rief H istory of G onzaga C ollege H igh S chool In 1821, Father Anthony Kohlmann of the Society of Jesus was the first to bring Ignatius’ vision of education to the Federal City of Washington, by founding what was then called the Washington Seminary. In 1858, President Buchanan signed an Act of Congress that changed the name of the Seminary to Gonzaga College and granted the school a federal charter. At that time, Gonzaga was located at Ninth and Streets, N.W. In 1871, the school moved to its present home at North Capitol and Eye Streets, N.W. Other than St. Aloysius Church and Kohlmann Hall, the area was largely undeveloped. Over more than 100 years, the Jesuit Residence, Sheehy Theater, Dooley Hall, the gym and the field were all added. Development culminated with the completion of the Eye Street Campus in 2015. We now look forward to celebrating 200 years in 2021. Gonzaga committed itself in the 1970’s to remaining in a downtown location, where it serves a uniquely diverse student body, from all points of the compass.

“It
definitely stems from Coach T, and all of the
other coaches. We all have complete faith in him that he has our best interests at heart. He always articulates to us that he loves us like we’re his own kids.
Another big factor, I think, is just the time we’re together - we’re here,
we’re here day in and day out: four days a week in the summer, an entire week at Mercersburg, day in and day out during the school year - you are with these guys, you’re struggling with these guys that become your brothers. And you’re all going through the same stuff. So you really just learn to trust one another because he’s going through the same thing you are.
You have to lean on him, and he has to lean on you. And you really have to pick each other up - I think that really helps us have that real sense of trust as a team.”
-Roger Mellado‘17

“Weight room ... you’re never really getting a rest. If you’re not doing a set, you’re doing something else. You’re just constantly working - you can’t take plays off on the field, so you can’t take time off in the weight room. It just prepares you more for your success on the field.”
-Johhny Jordan ‘17
If you do let someone down on your [Scholar Baller] team, everyone knows. You want to do well in
“
class not just because it’s a grade and that’s what is expected of you, but also because you don’t want to let the other people on your [Scholar Baller] team down.”
-Joseph Zuccari ‘17

“OTAs are challenging because of all the running, the heat, the lifting - there is limited rest in between. So it helps us develop a mental toughness because we’re able to endure them - and succesfully go through them to get stronger both physically and mentally.”
-Loic Sangwa ‘19
“We’re
all doing this together... the amount of work we put in just builds that trust. You
look to your right and to your left, everybody is going through what you’re going through - it’s just the hard work we put in.”

Mid-Season Recaps - The First 5 at Gilman (Baltimore) 38-0, W
The season opener could not have gone any better as the Eagles traveled up I-95 to capture a shutout victory. Gonzaga combined explosive offensive plays with smothering defense and strong special teams to put together a well balanced win.
vs Viera (FL) 21-6, L
The Hawks flew in from Florida and handed the Eagles their 1st loss of the season. Viera evened the series between the 2 schools at 1 win a piece culminating a 2 year travel series between the 2 programs.
vs Peddie (NJ) 30-6, W
Philadelphia was the neutral site for this inaugural meeting. The battle took place on storied Franklin Field the former home of the Philly Eagles and annual venue for the Penn Relays. The Eagles got back on the winning track with a convincing win over the talented Falcons.
vs Georgetown Prep 40-0, W
The 15th Annual Jesuit Gridiron Classic was glorious for Gonzaga. The Eagles retained the CoupeKozik cup for the 7th straight time. All benefits and proceeds for the game go the Washington Jesuit Academy.
vs Avalon 47-28, W
The Eagles extended their win streak to 3 games with a 47-28 victory over Avalon. The Eagles jumped out to a 40-0 halftime lead which was too much for the Black Nights to overcome. The victory elevated the Eagles to 4-1 in non-conference play.

WCAC Previews McNamara, 9/29 at 6:30pm
Gonzaga has defeated McNamara three consecutive times in the Trivers Era. The first contest in 2014 was an inspired one for the Eagles as it came on the day of the passing of beloved student Dom Pettey ‘15.
at DeMatha, 10/6 at 7pm
The Stags entered the season ranked #1 in the area and are still at the top of the list after going 4-1 in non-conference play. Their lone loss came to Bishop Gorman (NV). The Stags are four time defending WCAC champs.
Archbishop Carroll, 10/14 at 2pm
The Eagles have dominated the battle for North Capitol Street bragging rights for some time. The Lions are hoping to change the trend and as they have won 2 of their last 3 games and are now 2-3 in 2017.
at Good Counsel, 10/27 at 7pm
The Eagles have taken the last two regular season battles over the Falcons, with Good Counsel winning the WCAC Semifinal in 2015. GC has a new head coach and is 3-1 heading into WCAC play.
St. Johns, 11/4 at 3pm at Paint Branch HS
This year marks the 94th meeting (including playoffs) since the Modern Era began in 1928. In that time, Gonzaga has won 46, lost 42, and tied 5 games. Since 1981, Gonzaga is 27-13 against SJC, but the teams have split the last four games.

A talented and spirited group of Gonzaga football alums relived their glory days by hitting the gridiron for the Inaugural
Thanksgiving Alumni Weekend celebration.
The former Eagles competed passionately as there were many big plays made but also plenty of sore bodies still on the mend!!! It was a fun afternoon and we hope to continue growing the alumni participation in the future.
