Dear Gonzaga Football Family,
T
rying circumstances are inevitable and formidable opposition is ever-present, however prayer fortifies faith, and faith provides the fighting chance for love to ultimately conquer.
“Challenge and opposition are necessary for the most meaningful growth opportunities. Our faith would be tested but never broken and thus the core foundation of TRUST became our beacon.”
I was somewhat anxious heading into the hospital prior to knee surgery on March 12, 2020. My physical discomfort had been increasing daily and my ability to function well was deteriorating rapidly. Surgery was needed if I expected to return to “championship form” and to fly with my Eagles through the summer in preparation for the autumn season. I knew recovery would be lengthy, but certainly a challenge I was mentally prepared to face. Knee Recovery Road has had countless vehicles travel its street, and I could safely anticipate a journey inclusive of an occasional steep incline or winding curve. Little did I know that on March 13, 2020 an ominous “weather system” dubbed Covid-19 would provide a traffic challenge like no other as my recovery would coincide with a challenge that shook every human on the planet. Gonzaga’s administration declared our initial transition to virtual learning while indefinitely suspending in-person athletic activities. Severe weather systems have been known to pack potent punches, but none have had the sustained impact of Covid-19. We thought it may be a matter of days or perhaps weeks to get the vehicle moving smoothly at the speed limit. Certainly, it was hard for any of us to imagine this challenge being present for several months. I can recall huddling virtually with our coaching staff and discussing the importance of staying together while apart. TOGETHERNESS is one of the critical elements for creating the Gonzaga Football magic. Covid-19 guidelines, restrictions, and protocols opposed all traditional forms of togetherness with terms such as “social distancing,” “quarantine,” and “isolation” becoming part of the “new normal.” Thus, mental TOUGHNESS would be required for us to embrace unconventional methods to not only sustain our togetherness, but to enhance our togetherness. Challenge and opposition are necessary for the most meaningful growth opportunities. Our faith would be tested but never broken and thus the core foundation of TRUST became our beacon. The leadership challenge of expectation management heavily occupied my thoughts. My objective was to help all of us find a healthy dose of hope that requires a balance of idealism and realism. Uncertainty promotes anxiety and unknowns fuel fears. While trying to discover the balance, it was important to manage the long-term future planning challenges by focusing on the present moment. NOW was and is the thing we can control most. I had no idea what the final picture would look like, but I knew it wouldn’t be pretty if we allowed Covid-19 to intimidate and dominate us into submission. However, giving up was never an option. We would EMBRACE the now to give ourselves a fighting chance to FINISH on top. Ironically, after over nearly 600 hours of virtual practices, workouts and meetings and nearly 100 hours of in-person work together. March 13, 2021 was the day the Eagles would take flight. Indeed precisely 1 year after the “stay at home” order was delivered, we finally made it back! To successfully navigate through the rough waters of a 5-game season, the Gonzaga Football family EXPECTATION was to embrace steadfast ACCOUNTABILITY with sustained GUSTO! We needed our coaching staff to exhibit loving LEADERSHIP with relentless EFFORT. We needed our players to invest their utmost and trust that their SACRIFICE would be more than worthwhile. This would be needed for us to avoid “stepping in the poop” and put ourselves in position to turn the terrible nightmare into the incredibly rewarding UNIMAGINABLE DREAM lived by the UNBREAKABLE TEAM.

It’s incredible to consider the start of a year-long dream was about to happen prior to me being put to sleep ahead of surgery on March 12, 2020! Yet it’s more amazing to now know it’s a dream all of us in purple shared and one we will never forget. Knee Recovery Road was long and arduous but tremendously rewarding, and I can confidently say I’m walking, running, and flying with the grace, strength and swiftness of a Purple Eagle!
Faith over fear! Togetherness over divisiveness! Love over hate! NEF!
