June 2016 Dear Players, Parents and Coaches, Three times? In a row? You gotta be kidding me! Three Times a Lady, 3-peat, Tri-fecta, Triple Play, THREEEEEEEEE! For the first time, a single school has won the National Championship three times in a row. On May 21, 2016, the Purple Eagles of Gonzaga College High School defeated seven-time National Champions Jesuit High School (Sacramento, CA) 7-6 in what could be described as a “last man standing” brawl. Tremendous character, big giant purple hearts, great coaching and a little luck all contributed to this historic championship. Our players were fantastic in difficult conditions and gave up no tries in the semi-final or the final – incredible! Head Coach Peter Baggetta and Assistant Coaches Grant Furnary ’06, Jim Cuddihy and Paolo Iscaro prepared the boys for everything and anything they would face. The cheering Purple Army were also champions when it came to support for the boys (there must be some former cheerleaders in that group). What a victory! What a year! My “Season in Review” follows: Varsity Purple: The National Champion Varsity Purple team also won the 2016 Jesuit Rugby Classic and the Metro Area Varsity Rugby Conference (MAVRC) championship. Purple ended the season 25-1, with wins against nine nationally-ranked U.S. teams and the provincial champions of Spain on Tour. Coach Baggetta reached a personal milestone with his 150th win as Head Varsity Coach. Peter has made it to the semis at Nationals all eight years at the helm of Gonzaga Rugby, with three championships. Varsity Black: Head Coach Farrah Douglas, assisted by Pat Murphy, MK Kimiecik and Bill Pierce, developed 40+ Varsity players and had a great season, sporting a 12-6 record with signature wins against ranked opponents West Shore, Maryland Exiles and West End. JV: Head Coach John Nalls, assisted by Chas “Greybeard” Gore, Ian Combs ’10, David Penberthy ’09, and Hugh Ferridge, conquered tremendous challenges – managing 60 players, finding playing time for all, and ending up with a successful 17-10 record against D2 varsity teams. Freshman: Coaches Ward Penberthy, Joe Freeman, Mike Beckner, Gus Fraga and I had a very enjoyable season with a great group of developing players who will be big contributors to our program in the future. Playing older sides most of the season as well as touring sides from Wales and England, we ended up 9-4-1. With only a few experienced players these boys made major strides during the year. Boosters: Led by the M&M duo (Mary & Mike), our Boosters are not National Champions, they are World Champions. Their support cannot be minimized and the program wouldn’t enjoy the success it has had without them. Mary: thank you for your leadership, kindness and countless hours of dedication to our boys. And the cast of thousands that put their hands up when we needed help is overwhelming. You know who you are and I will never forget what you’ve done for us – thank you. Gonzaga: Once again we were honored to have Fr. Planning join us on Tour. Our visit to Manresa, Spain, was an incredible experience – thank you, Father, for sharing that day with us. Joe Reyda, Casey O’Neill, Penny Lynch, Colleen Emory, Debbie Onufrychuk and Patty Tobin – thanks as always for your support. Program: Is anyone having more fun than us? Our program is thriving because all of the above – the collective strength of the players, parents, coaches and the school. Our greatest success is the opportunity we give every Gonzaga student to be a part of Gonzaga Rugby. And with membership comes privileges: acceptance into the brotherhood and the opportunity to play, tour the world, make lifelong friendships, have fun, and live as a Man for Others. Pretty sweet deal if you ask me. Class of 2016: you have made us extremely proud through your contributions on and off the field, and we will follow you closely as you move on to college. We know you will continue to make us proud. Rising Seniors, Juniors and Sophomores: take to heart the lessons from your graduating brothers and pass on what it means to be a Rugby Man for Others. Let the spirit, values, fun and love continue into 2017 as we write another chapter in the best seller: “Gonzaga Rugby – the Never Ending Story”. BGPH Lee

June 2016 Dear Rugby Fans, What a joy, and honor, to work with the Gonzaga Rugby Boosters Club! I extend my sincere thanks to the scores of volunteers who supported the Rugby program this year, especially the members of the Boosters Executive Board: John Nalls, Richard Wathen, Kristin Yohannan and Chris Newkumet. Thanks also to Peter Baggetta and the world’s finest coaching staff for the great job they do with our boys. And very special thanks to the man who makes it all possible – Director of Rugby Lee Kelly – whose tireless service to Gonzaga Rugby knows no bounds. I also want to thank my son Danny for not minding – and maybe even enjoying – having his mom in his rugby business all year; and my dear husband, Mike – Tour Treasurer sans rival and trusted advisor – for his constant support. And, finally, I want to thank every one of the 2016 Gonzaga Rugby players: YOU are why we do what we do, and you made this year so much fun. THREE TIME NATIONAL CHAMPIONS! I am in awe of the accomplishments of this program since its humble beginnings in 1988. How did we get here? I submit that Gonzaga Rugby’s strength stems from its unique combination of: 1) outstanding, skilled and committed coaches; 2) enthusiastic, hard-working and cooperative players; 3) a welcoming and inclusive participation policy that allows every Gonzaga student to play rugby – if you show up and put out, you will play; 4) the dedicated support of volunteers through the Boosters Club; and 5) the rich, collaborative nature of the sport of rugby itself – the brotherhood – which is a hallmark of Gonzaga and the Jesuit tradition it represents. Put all of that together and what do you get? Champions! Gonzaga Rugby’s achievement of three consecutive national titles is a first for the Boys High School Rugby National Championship Tournament, and its 17 consecutive league championships represent the longest streak for any sport in the history of Gonzaga. I can’t emphasize enough the role that the program’s inclusive participation policy plays in its success. It allows 200+ boys to play rugby each year, resulting in a deep bench of skilled athletes who develop a love of the game, loyalty to the program and a commitment to each other. It distinguishes Gonzaga as a school that exhibits true sportsmanship, reflecting its Christian values. And it gives every boy, including those who may otherwise not have had the chance, the opportunity to play a high school sport. The Gonzaga Rugby experience is significant in our players’ development as Men for Others. For some, it is transformational. Read the “What Gonzaga Rugby Means to Me” entries in the “Senior Bios” section of this book and you’ll see what I mean. Year after year, the comments are consistent: Gonzaga Rugby means brotherhood, family, the best part of Gonzaga. In fact, some of the most impactful statements come from players on the Varsity B side – players who might have been cut but for the policy of inclusion. Our players value Gonzaga Rugby because Gonzaga Rugby values them. The Gonzaga Rugby program should be proud of its impressive winning tradition. I am proud of the work of the Boosters in support of that tradition. But I am most proud of, and immensely grateful for, what Lee Kelly calls the BIG GIANT PURPLE HEART of Gonzaga Rugby: the spirit that envelops all of us in a shared experience of sport, camaraderie, caring, belonging, and FUN. For a teenage boy and his family, it doesn’t get any better than that. AMDG! Mary Plantamura 2015-2016 President Gonzaga Rugby Boosters

GONZAGA COLLEGE OVERVIEW THE JESUIT TRADITION

G

onzaga is the oldest educational institution in the old Federal City of Washington. Gonzaga College opened its doors to the young men of the Federal City in 1821. It was then located on the north side of F Street, NW, between 9th and 10th Streets. The building’s foundation stone was laid in 1815 by Bishop Leonard Neale. It was intended to become a House of Novices for the Jesuits, but by 1820 was operating as a House of Philosophy for Jesuit Scholastics. In the months that followed, the Jesuits were besieged with requests from Catholics and nonCatholics alike in Washington to allow their sons into the college (which was originally under the charter of Georgetown College), not to become Jesuits, but for a good, basic education. The Jesuits agreed, and the Washington Catholic Seminary, as Gonzaga was originally called, began classes for lay students in 1821. The name was changed to Gonzaga College in 1858, when the school received its own Congressional charter, signed by President James Buchanan. The school moved to its current location at North Capitol and I Streets, NW, in 1871.

GONZAGA MISSION STATEMENT Gonzaga College High School is a Catholic college preparatory school for boys operated by the Society of Jesus and its colleagues under the governance of an independent Board of Trustees. Drawing its inspiration from the spiritual vision of St. Ignatius Loyola and the apostolic and educational tradition of the Jesuits, Gonzaga offers a values-oriented and academically-challenging curriculum to young men of diverse backgrounds from across the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. Gonzaga views its urban setting in the heart of the nation’s capital as a significant advantage in fulfilling its goals, allowing its students to interact with the larger Washington community and to learn leadership skills and civic responsibility as part of their overall development. Moreover, Gonzaga strives to create a dynamic and caring learning environment which it unites with its academic, spiritual, extracurricular, and athletic programs to help form ‘Men for and with Others’ – that is, graduates who are open to growth, intellectually competent, religious, loving, and committed to doing justice.

GONZAGA RUGBY HISTORY HUMBLE BEGINNINGS – THE 1980S

THE 2000’S – BECOMING A POWERHOUSE

The history of Rugby Football at Gonzaga dates back to the fall of 1987. A few students, inspired by

This is the period where Gonzaga moved into the big time, becoming the Rugby powerhouse it is today. Expanded coaching staffs developed under the watchful eye of current Director of Rugby Lee Kelly have continued to improve the level of the team’s play by adapting to the changing styles and laws of the game. The club expanded from 2 teams in 2000 to 6 teams in 2013. This provided an opportunity for many

tales of sporting glory from their brothers and friends in college, brought the ‘Nobel Art” to their beloved school on Eye Street. The school administration did not share the enthusiasm of these brave innovators and they were forced to form “Eye Street Rugby” to realize their dream. This un-recognized club began play, as part of a sixteam PRU High School Division, in the spring of 1988. They recorded only one win in their first two seasons, an inauspicious beginning to a dynasty.

THE 1990S – BIG CHANGES BETTER RUGBY The 90s saw a steady increase in the number of players and the number of victories. The School finally wised-up and gave the Rugby team varsity status in 1994 and the team’s name changed to Gonzaga Rugby. The improvement in their Rugby abilities soon brought the “Men of Eye Street” the Cheery Blossom Festival crown, their first PRU championship and a visit to the Nationals where they placed third (1998). The 1990s are most notable for the creation of Gonzaga Rugby legend JP Perez who, after a stellar playing career, became the first and only (so far) alumni to take up the reins as Head Coach.

more players to gain experience and more importantly, valuable playing time. It was also during this time that the Eagles began a tradition that persists today, the annual spring tour. Gonzaga Rugby has toured the Cayman Islands, England, Ireland, Wales, France, Italy, Spain, Argentina, and Uruguay. These tours have been instrumental in improving the level of Gonzaga’s Rugby by continuously challenging more experienced teams of a high caliber.

GONZAGA RUGBY HISTORY 2014-2015 – NATIONAL CHAMPIONS Fresh off of a heartbreaking runner-up finish in a classic national championship the year before and returning a solid core of veteran players led by captains Ben Cima, Charlie Depont and Jimmy Ronan, the Purple Eagles began their 2014 campaign determined to “Climb the Summit” in their quest to bring a national title to Eye Street. In dramatic fashion, this special group did just that for players past, present and future by avenging their loss with a thrilling 27-26 victory over defending National Champion Jesuit High School of Sacramento on May 17, 2014 for the first National Championship in the 26 year history of the Gonzaga Rugby program!

2014 The win capped an extremely difficult regular season schedule which included matches against #4 Xavier, #7 Charlotte Catholic, #14 St. Ignatius of Cleveland, #14 (Club) Charlotte Tigers, #23 Perry Street Pride, and former National Champion Dixon of California. The Gonzaga Eagles picked up their 5th consecutive Jesuit Rugby Classic Championship and their 6th Metro Area Varsity Rugby Conference (MAVRC) Championship along the way, finishing the season 16-0-1 overall. The program continued to grow to include three Varsity, two JV and a Freshman side, with 200+ total players, the largest and most successful sports program at Gonzaga. The developmental Varsity Black team compiled an impressive 9-1 overall record both domestically and internationally while the Varsity White side finished 7-5-1 playing superior competition. The JV Purple finished 9-2 with a Jesuit Rugby Classic

2014 Championship, while the JV White continued to advance and finished 5-51. A large Freshman team continued to “feed the Beast” with some great rugby and a 7-9 season where all players gained great experience. On the international stage, 146 Gonzaga players, coaches, trainers and family members went on tour to Italy, which included a trip to watch the Italy vs. England 6 Nations professional rugby match. The competitive portion of the Tour de Italia included matches against Italian school boy champion and #1 ranked Capitalina Rugby Union, CUS Roma, and S.S. Lazio Elite League member

GONZAGA RUGBY HISTORY L’Aquila and local club Avezzano, and the Prato U16 Elite, U18 Elite and U18 Regional sides. In all, it was an incredibly successful tour, with a final overall record of 7-2 over the best Italian Rugby had to offer. In what became an historic run in the National High School Rugby Championships in Elkhart, Indiana, the Eagles entered as the #2 seed and defeated Notre Dame de la Salette 32-26 in the quarterfinals, dominated # 5 ranked and Midwest Champion Penn 35-12 in the semis, and finally bested the #1 ranked

2015 Jesuit Marauders in a thrilling 27-26 championship final. Back-to-back – AMAZING! Not only did the 2015 Eagles “Burn the Boats” to become two-time National Champions, once again defeating Sacramento Jesuit, this time by the score of 13-3; but they also won our 7th Metro Area Varsity Rugby Championship (our 16th consecutive league championship – the longest championship streak in the history of Gonzaga) and our 6th consecutive Jesuit Rugby Classic championship. Employing and enhancing the winning formula that got them to the top of the heap, the Varsity Purple, led by team captains Jack Carroll, Jack Iscaro, and Nick Skalka, embarked on an even more difficult regular season schedule, perhaps the most difficult ever attempted by a high school side. The Varsity Purple Eagles battled and defeated #1 ranked (Club) Cathedral, #1 ranked (Canada) Saltfleet, #7 Xavier, #8 Greenwich, #11 Georgetown Prep, #21 South Doyle and # 27 Charlotte Catholic to finish a perfect 15-0 for the regular season and 21-1 overall. 24 • GONZAGA RUGBY EAGLES 2016

The rest of the program followed suit as we once again sported over 200 players on three varsity, two JV, and one freshman team. The Varsity White competed in the 1st division in MAVRC and finished 9-8, including an appearance in the Maryland Exiles Championship. The Varsity Black also competed at the highest level and finished with a 6-3-1 mark against A-side competition. The Junior Varsity finished a combined 6-10-3 while developing into a cohesive unit. Finally, the Freshman side also finished a perfect 15-0 while collecting championship hardware in the Jesuit Rugby Classic, the Maryland Exiles Tournament and the Frederick Fast Track Tournament. Overall record: 57-22-4. Tour took us south to Santiago, Chile in the company of a host of players, coaches, and supporters, including Gonzaga President Fr. Stephen Planning. A highlight of the trip was the Mass said by Fr. Planning at the tomb of Jesuit saint Alberto Hurtado. The incredible experience was accompanied by some incredible rugby against Catolica, Grange School, Alianza, Sporting Club, and Staide Francais, with our sides finishing 5-1 in international competition. The return to the states brought a return to Nationals, this time at the Rugby Athletic Center in Charlotte. The Eagles left no doubt in the repeat by storming through the competition, defeating #23 St. 2015 Thomas Aquinas 29-0, #5 Herriman 39-34, and, in an unprecedented third finals meeting in a row, defeating #2 ranked Sacramento Jesuit 13-3. This amazing victory – a second national title in as many years – established Gonzaga Rugby as the undisputed premier high school rugby program in the country. While we had a tremendously successful year, it was also a difficult one with the tragic passing of class mate Dominik Pettey ’15 and rugby team mate Neil York ’11. They have reminded us how important it is to live as Men for Others and how very special are the bonds developed while on Eye Street. Gonzaga men are a Band of Brothers who will always be there for each other.

GONZAGA RUGBY HISTORY 2016 – THREE-PEAT NATIONAL CHAMPIONS! With two consecutive national titles behind them and the target now set squarely upon their backs, the 2016 season dawned with a young but experienced lineup determined to “Race to the Pole” for an unprecedented 3rd consecutive national championship and to make high school rugby history. On a sloppy track in Charlotte they did just that, with a come from behind 7-6 triumph over (once again) Sacramento Jesuit to add a National 3Peat to their 8th consecutive MAVRC (and 17th consecutive league, an ongoing Gonzaga record) and 7th consecutive 2016 Jesuit Rugby Classic crowns. While it would have been tempting to rest on their substantial laurels after so much success, the Varsity Purple, led by captains Patrick Hesse, Dante Lopresti and Patrick Sheehy, instead elected to undertake a regular season described by the Goff Rugby Report as a “Who’s Who of the toughest high school teams in the nation” and the “#1 Toughest HS Schedule,” including the following nationally ranked opponents: Xavier (#3), Royal Irish (Club #3), Fort Hunt (Club #4), St Edward (#6), St. Ignatius (#8), Doylestown (Club #9), Georgetown Prep (#9) twice,

Charlotte Catholic(#23), Cumberland Valley (#52) and Loyola Blakefield (#57). Despite this Murderer’s Row, the Purple finished a remarkable 20-1 in regular season and MAVRC play and 26-1 overall. The program continued to thrive as the largest in the school with 210 participants on the Varsity Purple, Varsity Black, Junior Varsity and Freshman teams. The Varsity Black carried 51 players and competed at a high level against mostly A sidelevel competition, finishing with an impressive 12-6 record. The Junior Varsity, with the largest roster at 65 players, had an outstanding campaign against both JV and varsity competition, highlighted by a sophomores-only win over Wimbledon College of England, 2nd place in the MAVRC Varsity II Division, and the 2016 Jesuit Rugby Classic Championship to finish 17-10. The Freshman side continued to ensure a bright future for Gonzaga Rugby, with 54 players and a 9-4-1 finish. In March, 85 players and a large contingent of coaches, parents and faculty, including Gonzaga President Stephen Planning, S.J., crossed the briny seas of the Atlantic en route to Spain and the 2016 Tour to Barcelona, Manresa, Valencia and Sitges. GONZAGA RUGBY HISTORY and Gonzaga Rugby by running roughshod through the opposition, which included Spanish National Champion CUA Valencia, San Boi, Communidad Valencia, La Vil and several local clubs to post an 8-1 record internationally. Non-rugby highlights of the trip included Valencia’s famous Fallas Festival and an opportunity to literally walk in the footsteps of St. Ignatius in Manresa, where the Society of Jesus founder had his spiritual

2016 awakening, and which included Mass celebrated by Father Planning in the Church of the Cave where Ignatius wrote the Spiritual Exercises. Upon the return stateside, it was time to get to the business of chasing history at a rain-sodden Rugby Athletic Center in North Carolina. Exam conflicts

resulted in only the Varsity Purple traveling to Charlotte, but they accomplished what they set out to do. On muddy, mucky pitches nearly stripped clean of what had been grass, with tremendous guts, great tackling and repeated try-line stands, the Men of Gonzaga defeated #10 Mira Costa 37-10, #3 Xavier 7-0, and now four times familiar #2 Jesuit of Sacramento 7-6 in the final for the 3Peat. A #1 ranking, High School Rugby Team of the Year designation, and a National Forward of the Year Award (for Senior Patrick Hesse) were among the many post season accolades amassed following this historical feat. Where from here? The sky is the limit as every accomplishment sets a new record and the now legendary success of the Gonzaga Rugby Program continues to attract an incredible mixture of talented players, coaches and parents dedicated to lifting each other up on Eagle’s Wings for the Greater Glory of God! Gonzaga Hail!

THE GREATEST OF GAMES Shoulder to shoulder, Skin to skin, Glimpse the blood drip from their chins. Heaviness of breath encircling the sound, Bodies upon bodies are tossed to the ground. These men must be feared for they cannot be slain, These men must be feared for they play through the pain. The game is played with either 7 or 15 The spirit of the game is always held pristine. Men next to Men fighting for the lead, You could tell by their look they’re willing to compete. You don’t play for yourself, you play for others. These mates aren’t just friends, they are your brothers. MATT FREEMAN ’19

2016 Neil York Man for Others Award

I

n 2015, Gonzaga Rugby established the Neil York Man for Others Award honoring the Gonzaga Senior rugby player who most embodies the Ignatian spirituality, fraternity, scholarship, and sportsmanship demonstrated by Neil York ’11. A talented scrumhalf at Gonzaga who went on to play rugby at St. Joseph’s University, Neil died in May 2015, shortly before his graduation from St. Joe’s. He was beloved teammate, friend and son, and a true Man for Others.

The 2016 recipient of the Neil York Man for Others Award was Jack Royston. Past recipient of the Neil York Man for Others Award: Reggie Corbin (2015)

Neil York Tribute Game

G

onzaga Rugby further honored Neil by dedicating the Varsity Purple’s April 10, 2016 match against rival Xavier High School of New York to his memory. The match was preceded by a moment of silence and the presentation of a 2011 Gonzaga Rugby team photo to Vivienne Sequeira, Neil’s mother. Following a well-played match between two of the nation’s top high school teams, Gonzaga emerged victorious, 36-20.
