July 2018 Dear Players, Parents and Coaches, Gonzaga Rugby is thirty years old. What better way to celebrate this anniversary than to win our 4th National Championship in 5 years! We have grown from our humble beginnings as a club team in 1988, with players like Josh Brady (who has a freshman on this year’s team), Rob Grant and Hector Nicodemas laying the foundation, to a program that is now considered the gold standard of high school rugby. The success of the program can be traced to a collaboration of motivated, great players, dedicated, excellent coaches, a booster organization that supports the team in every way imaginable and a school that stresses academics and living as a man for others. We are very proud of the accomplishments of all our players. The coaches have guided the players to achieve a standard of play and culture which align with the values of the school. This season’s accomplishments are many…9th consecutive Gonzaga Rugby Classic Championship, 10th MAVRC Championship (19th league championship which is the longest consecutive championship streak in school history) and capped off with the National Championship win. Kudos to the Purple coaching staff led by Head Varsity Coach Peter Baggetta and assisted by Bill Pierce ‘07, Pat Murphy, Dante Lopresti ’16 and Hugh Ferridge. None of this happens without all the hard work involved with preparing our boys to be champions. The Black team, under the direction of Head Coach John Nalls who was assisted by MK Kimiciek, Joe Freeman and Jorge Molinari, faced a challenging schedule which included several nationally ranked teams. The men in black answered the call with a winning season and continued to develop the next group of purple warriors. JV had a new coach to the program, Danny Breda. Danny is not new to the area having played youth and high school rugby with West Carroll before playing at the highly ranked Arkansas State program. The JV made it to the D2 varsity semi-finals, just missing a trip to the championship. Assisting Danny was Josh Brady ‘88, Robert Garvis ‘04 and Gus Fraga. The Freshmen had a rough year in terms of their record, but had many players that will make an impact before they graduate from Gonzaga. The staff of Ward Penberthy, Chas Gore, Tom Parsons, Dave Ries and yours truly had a great experience with this group of hard working, mostly new players with a lot of potential going forward. Gonzaga rugby is more than championships. It’s about the opportunity to experience a great game and to be a part of a team and program. Many of our greatest successes are with players that have never made our purple team but still develop a passion for the game and work hard to become a good player. Many of these players go on to play major roles in their college teams both on the field and as officers of their club. Because of our all-inclusive policy, these boys had the opportunity to be a part of something we consider very special, Gonzaga Rugby. Gonzaga Rugby asked them to make the commitment to the team and its policies while having fun playing a great game. It takes a championship effort by all involved to have the kind of success we have experienced in so many different ways. Each year we count on our seniors to lead the way for our teams and their ability to pass on the lessons learned from past classes has never disappointed us. One day, years from now, these players will pull out this book and remember this time in their lives and what it meant to them. What a memory, what friendships, the laughs, the tears and the love for each other will occupy a special place in their hearts. Our boosters are champions who do so much for this program that it just wouldn’t exist and function for the benefit of all the boys without them. Too many names to thank all of you individually but I will mention a few. Michelle Hoffman, our President, can finally go back to a somewhat normal life again. Thank you, all our board members and volunteers, for another incredible year of service to Gonzaga Rugby. Names like Monica, Tim S., Angie, Kevin, Elaina, Amy, Kelley, Patrick, Betsy, Tim R., Lisa and so many others are all Parents for Others. Thanks also go out to Joe Reyda and Casey O’Neill from the athletic department, Debbie, Penny and Zane, who keep our boys in one piece, Tom Every and Fr. Planning for all their continuing support and Patti Tobin for always being there for our boys. It has been an incredible ride with Gonzaga Rugby. Thank you all for letting me be a part of it. June 2018 Dear Parents, Players and Coaches, When Meg Jones, the 2016-17 Boosters President, asked if I would consider succeeding her, she did not know I was actively looking for a board position. I needed to be on a board to become a member of a professional organization I was interested in. Would President of the Rugby Boosters qualify me for membership when others members were on boards of large, publicly traded companies, financial institutions and much larger non-profits? I had my membership screening call and talked about the size of the Gonzaga Rugby program, the national championships and mission to build and grow the sport of rugby. There was a moment of silence and the screener responded. “I need to tell you that I’m a huge All Blacks fan.” I was in! She then went on to tell her story of how through satellite TV, a southern gal from Dallas, became obsessed with the All Blacks and now travels the world to follow the game of rugby. That’s the magic of rugby. It draws you in and captivates you. It’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before. The intensity of the play, the flow, the opportunity for anyone on the pitch to touch the ball and score a try makes it a game like no other. If you take pictures of the games like I did, you get to see the games a second time; the great athleticism, the moments of victory and defeat, the intense emotions on the faces of the players. As I think about the draw of rugby, one thing I can’t get away from is the pictures of love and sacrifice it paints, play after play. The players sacrifice their bodies in a way no other sport requires. And they do it for love. Love of the game, love of their mates, love of victory. Love and sacrifice are intertwined-- if you’re not sacrificing, you’re not really loving. And your certainly not winning National Companionships. You are most definitely not winning four of them. I spent most of my term at Black team games. Black team you are amazing. It was so fun to watch you --you are champions too. Purple team, I’m so happy to have gotten to know you and watch you win the National Championship. You did it! You earned it! Each of you is so special and talented, it was my privilege to know you and serve you. This was my last year as a Gonzaga mom and I wouldn’t have spent it any other way. Thanks to my fabulous parent board members John Nalls, Tim Sessing, and Monica Thompson. Thanks to “Sweet Lee” Kelly and head coaches, Peter Baggetta, Johnny Nalls, Danny Breda, Ward Penberthy, and all the great assistant coaches. Because of you, our boys love rugby. Thanks to all the parent volunteers – the program can’t work without you. To all of you, may the Lord bless you and keep you always. I will miss you. AMDG! GONZAGA COLLEGE OVERVIEW THE JESUIT TRADITION

G

onzaga is the oldest educational institution in the old Federal City of Washington. Gonzaga College opened its doors to the young men of the Federal City in 1821. It was then located on the north side of F Street, NW, between 9th and 10th Streets. The building’s foundation stone was laid in 1815 by Bishop Leonard Neale. It was intended to become a House of Novices for the Jesuits, but by 1820 was operating as a House of Philosophy for Jesuit Scholastics. In the months that followed, the Jesuits were besieged with requests from Catholics and nonCatholics alike in Washington to allow their sons into the college (which was originally under the charter of Georgetown College), not to become Jesuits, but for a good, basic education. The Jesuits agreed, and the Washington Catholic Seminary, as Gonzaga was originally called, began classes for lay students in 1821. The name was changed to Gonzaga College in 1858, when the school received its own Congressional charter, signed by President James Buchanan. The school moved to its current location at North Capitol and I Streets, NW, in 1871.

GONZAGA MISSION STATEMENT Gonzaga College High School is a Catholic college preparatory school for boys operated by the Society of Jesus and its colleagues under the governance of an independent Board of Trustees. Drawing its inspiration from the spiritual vision of St. Ignatius Loyola and the apostolic and educational tradition of the Jesuits, Gonzaga offers a values-oriented and academically-challenging curriculum to young men of diverse backgrounds from across the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. Gonzaga views its urban setting in the heart of the nation’s capital as a significant advantage in fulfilling its goals, allowing its students to interact with the larger Washington community and to learn leadership skills and civic responsibility as part of their overall development. Moreover, Gonzaga strives to create a dynamic and caring learning environment which it unites with its academic, spiritual, extracurricular, and athletic programs to help form ‘Men for and with Others’ – that is, graduates who are open to growth, intellectually competent, religious, loving, and committed to doing justice.

GONZAGA RUGBY HISTORY HUMBLE BEGINNINGS – THE 1980’S

THE 2000’S – BECOMING A POWERHOUSE

The history of Rugby Football at Gonzaga dates back to the fall of 1987. A few students, inspired by

This is the period where Gonzaga moved into the big time, becoming the Rugby powerhouse it is today. Expanded coaching staffs developed under the watchful eye of current Director of Rugby Lee Kelly have continued to improve the level of the team’s play by adapting to the changing styles and laws of the game. The club expanded from 2 teams in 2000 to 6 teams in 2013. This provided an opportunity for many

tales of sporting glory from their brothers and friends in college, brought the ‘Nobel Art” to their beloved school on Eye Street. The school administration did not share the enthusiasm of these brave innovators and they were forced to form “Eye Street Rugby” to realize their dream. This un-recognized club began play, as part of a sixteam PRU High School Division, in the spring of 1988. They recorded only one win in their first two seasons, an inauspicious beginning to a dynasty.

THE 1990’S – BIG CHANGES BETTER RUGBY The 90s saw a steady increase in the number of players and the number of victories. The School finally wised-up and gave the Rugby team varsity status in 1994 and the team’s name changed to Gonzaga Rugby. The improvement in their Rugby abilities soon brought the “Men of Eye Street” the Cheery Blossom Festival crown, their first PRU championship and a visit to the Nationals where they placed third (1998). The 1990s are most notable for the creation of Gonzaga Rugby legend JP Perez who, after a stellar playing career, became the first and only (so far) alumni to take up the reins as Head Coach.

more players to gain experience and more importantly, valuable playing time. It was also during this time that the Eagles began a tradition that persists today, the annual spring tour. Gonzaga Rugby has toured the Cayman Islands, England, Ireland, Wales, France, Italy, Spain, Argentina, and Uruguay. These tours have been instrumental in improving the level of Gonzaga’s Rugby by continuously challenging more experienced teams of a high caliber.

On the field, the Eagles won 13 PRU Championships, 5 MAVRC Championships, 6 MARFU Championships and multiple regional tournaments during the decade and participated in 9 National Championship tournaments. This decade introduced a new

Australia. This has helped to spread the reputation of Gonzaga as center of Rugby excellence in the United States.

2013 – TOWARD THE FUTURE The Varsity Purple won their 5th MAVRC title and a 4th consecutive Jesuit Classic title. They had six wins against nationally ranked Top-20 teams and spent most of the year ranked #1 in the country. They also made a fifth consecutive trip to the final four at the USA Rugby

GONZAGA RUGBY’S WORLD-WIDE AMBASSADORS Over the years, many Gonzaga Rugby players and alumni have been selected for USA Rugby National squads at the U17, U18, U19 and U20 level. This demonstrates the increased national and international recognition that Gonzaga’s Rugby Program has achieved over the last twelve years. Many of these players have been selected for prestigious tours with the various national teams including trips to United Kingdom, Ireland,

Chile, Uruguay, Kenya, France, Georgia, and Argentina. In the true spirit of Gonzaga our international players have always behaved like gentlemen and proved to be leaders both on and off the pitch. Gonzaga has also hosted a number of touring teams from the great rugby playing nation’s of the world including teams from the Pembrokeshire district in Wales and the Hale School in

National High School Championships coming up short against Jesuit-Sacramento in the finals. Varsity captains Matt Flynn, Dom Plantamura and Ben Cima with excellent support from other team leaders provided able assistance to Coach Kelly and his staff. Besides the Varsity Purple, Gonzaga Rugby fielded five other teams including the Varsity White, Sophomore Purple, Sophomore White and two Freshmen Teams. All of these teams earned championship honors during the 2013 season. These honors included PRU Divisional Championships at all age levels making it an Eagles Rugby championship sweep for a second year in a row. GONZAGA RUGBY HISTORY 2010

Fresh off of a heartbreaking runner-up finish in a classic national championship the year before and returning a solid core of veteran players led by captains Ben Cima, Charlie Depont and Jimmy Ronan, the Purple Eagles began their 2014 campaign determined to “Climb the Summit” in their quest to bring a national title to Eye Street. In dramatic fashion, this special group did just that for players past, present and future by

reigning U.S. National High School Champions Dixon (California) and the Uruguayan National U-17 squad and a Uruguayan U-17 Developmental squad. Ben Cima and Jimmy Ronan were

2012

2011 selected for the USA Rugby High School All-Americans tours of England and Argentina and Uruguay. Both players acquitted themselves well during these successful tours both as players and as ambassadors for Gonzaga Rugby.

2014 – 2016 – THREE PEAT NATIONAL CHAMPIONS In an historic run spanning 3 seasons, Gonzaga established itself as the premier high school rugby program in the nation while pulling off an unprecedented threepeat as national champions. 22 • GONZAGA RUGBY EAGLES 2018

avenging their loss with a thrilling 27-26 victory over defending National Champion Jesuit High School of Sacramento on May 17, 2014 for the first National Championship in the 26 year history of the Gonzaga Rugby program! The win capped an extremely difficult regular season schedule which included matches against 6 nationally ranked teams, their

2013

GONZAGA RUGBY HISTORY 5th consecutive Jesuit Rugby Classic Championship and their 6th Metro Area Varsity Rugby Conference (MAVRC) Championship along the way, finishing the season 16-0-1 overall. The program continued to grow to include three varsity, two JV and a freshman side, with 200+ total players, the largest and most successful sports program at Gonzaga, winning the Jesuit Classic JV side and finishing 53-22-3 overall while taking on all comers and often playing up a division. On the international stage, 146 Gonzaga players, coaches, trainers and family members went on an incredibly successful tour to Italy, including matches against Italian school boy champion and #1 ranked Capitolina and a final overall record of 7-2. In the National High School Rugby Cham-

2014 pionships in Elkhart, Indiana, the Eagles entered as the #2 seed and defeated Notre Dame de la Salette 32-26 in the quarterfinals, dominated # 5 ranked and Midwest Champion Penn 35-12 in the semis, and finally bested the #1 ranked Jesuit Marauders in the final to complete their date with destiny! Not only did the 2015 Eagles “Burn the Boats” to become two-time National Champions, once again defeating Sacramento Jesuit, this time by the score of 13-3; but they also won our 7th Metro Area Varsity Rugby Championship (our 16th consecutive league championship -- the longest championship streak in the history of Gonzaga) and our 6th consecutive Jesuit Rugby Classic championship. Employing and enhancing the winning formula that got them to the top of the heap, the Varsity Purple, led by team captains Jack Carroll, Jack Iscaro, and Nick Skalka, embarked on an even more difficult regular season schedule, perhaps the most difficult ever at-

2014 tempted by a high school side, but still finished a perfect 15-0 for the regular season and 21-1 overall. The rest of the program followed suit as we once again sported over 200 players on three varsity, two JV, and one freshman team with the Varsity White and Black teams competing against A sides, the freshman side going a perfect 15-0 and an overall program record of 57-22-4. Tour took players, coaches and supporters including Gonzaga President Stephen Planning, S.J. south to Santiago, Chile which included Mass celebrated by Fr. Planning at the tomb of Jesuit saint Alberto Hurtado and some incredible rugby with our sides finishing 5-1

GONZAGA RUGBY HISTORY in international competition. The return to the states brought a return to Nationals, this time at the Rugby Athletic Center in Charlotte. The Eagles left no doubt in the repeat by storming through the competition, defeating #23 St. Thomas Aquinas 29-0, #5 Herriman 39-34, and, in an unprecedented third finals meeting in a row, defeating #2 ranked Sacramento Jesuit 133. This amazing victory – a second national title in as many years – established Gonzaga Rugby as the undisputed premier high school rugby program in the country. While a tremendously successful year, it was also a difficult one with the tragic passing of class mate Dominik Pettey ’15 and rugby team mate Neil York ’11.

2015 They reminded us how important it is to live as Men for Others and how very special are the bonds developed while on Eye Street. With consecutive national titles behind them and the target now set squarely upon their backs, the 2016 season dawned with a “Race to the Pole” for an unprecedented 3rd consecutive national championship and high school rugby history. On a sloppy track in Charlotte, they did just that with a come from behind 7-6 triumph over (once again) Sacramento Jesuit to add a National 3Peat to their 8th consecutive MAVRC and 7th consecutive Jesuit Rugby Classic crowns. While it would have been tempting to rest on their substantial laurels after so much success, the Varsity Purple, led by cap- 2016 24 • GONZAGA RUGBY EAGLES 2018

2015 tains Patrick Hesse, Dante Lopresti and Patrick Sheehy, instead elected to undertake a regular season described by the Goff Rugby Report as a “Who’s Who of the toughest high school teams in the nation.” Despite this Murderer’s Row, the Purple finished a remarkable 20-1 in regular season and MAVRC play and 26-1 overall. The program continued to thrive as the largest in the school with 210 participants on Varsity Purple and Black, Junior Varsity and Freshman. The Varsity Black competed against mostly A side level competition, the Junior Varsity had an outstanding campaign highlighted by a sophomore only win over Wimbledon College of England, 2nd place in the MAVRC Varsity II Division and the 2016 Jesuit Rugby Classic Championship, and the Freshmen had a winning campaign for an overall record of 64-21-1. In March, the team, including again Father Planning, traveled to Barcelona, Manresa, Valencia and Sitges in Spain. The Eye Street Boys made an emphatic statement for US and Gonzaga Rugby by running roughshod through the opposition, which included Spanish National Champion CUA Valencia, to post a 8-1 record internationally. The Non-rugby highlight of the trip included an opportunity to literally walk in the footsteps of St. Ignatius in Manresa. Upon the return stateside, it was time to get to the business of chasing history at a rain sodden RAC in North Carolina. The Eagles accomplished what they set out to do with guts and some great tackling, defeating #10 Mira

GONZAGA RUGBY HISTORY Costa 37-10, #3 Xavier 7-0 and now 4 times familiar #2 Jesuit of Sacramento 7-6 in the final for the 3Peat. A #1 ranking, HS Rugby Team of the Year, and a National Forward of the Year Award for Senior Patrick Hesse were among the many post season accolades amassed along the way to this historical feat.

2016

2016 2017 – BLOODIED BUT UNBOWED The theme of “Is that all you got?” from the classic 1974 Mohammed Ali vs. George Foreman Heavyweight Championship could not have served as a more perfect analogy for the 2017 Eagles, who overcame a great deal of adversity to battle back to the top echelon of high

school rugby, collecting a runner up finish in the National Championship as well as their 9th consecutive MAVRC (and 18th consecutive league, an ongoing Gonzaga record) and 8th consecutive Jesuit Rugby Classic crowns along the way. A young but very talented 3 time champion Varsity Purple, led by captains Roger Mellado, Max Draddy and LJ Koi-Larbi, had long since become used to being the red circle on every team’s schedule. That simply comes with the territory of playing for Gonzaga Rugby and we wouldn’t have it any other way. True to form and despite their youth, the team continued to take on all comers, including the following nationally ranked opponents: Sacramento Jesuit (#1), Fort Hunt (Club #2), Penn (#3), Doylestown (Club #5), Xavier (#7), St. Ignatius (#11), St. Edward (#12), KC Jr. Blues (Club #22),

After dropping 2 of their first 4 matches to Top 5 club sides Fort Hunt and Doylestown, the word on the street was that this was the season that the Eagle’s bubble would burst. The rumors of Gonzaga’s demise, however, were greatly exaggerated as they got off the mat, regrouped and stormed through their competition to finish 16-3 in regular season and MAVRC play and 19-6 overall. The program continued to thrive as the largest in the school with over 200 participants on Varsity Purple, Varsity Black, Junior Varsity and Freshman. The Varsity Black competed at a high level against mostly A side and even nationally ranked level competition (several times playing league matches for their Purple brethren) to finish with a 9-9 record. The Junior Varsity, with the largest roster at 67 players, were also Comeback Kids by overcoming a slow start against both JV and varsity competition to close with championship appearances in both the Jesuit Rugby Classic and the MAVRC Varsity II Division and finish 9-10. The freshman side continued to ensure a bright future for Gonzaga Rugby with 54 players and a dominant 10-2 finish to improve the overall program record to a remarkable 47-27 considering every team played “up”. On the sacred feast of St. Patrick, 76 young Gonzaga men and 31 coaches and parents set off over the rainbow to find a pot o’ gold not in the Emerald Isle but in The Boot as Gonzaga Rugby began its Spring Tour to the Italian cities of Milan and Padua. Coaches knew that they were in for a challenge in the north as opposed to the southern part of the country wherein they had their prior 2 tours as well as the fact that we had scheduled Academy teams rather than clubs for the

Purple Side. The scouting reports proved true as the level of play of these professional developmental sides was exceptional, providing an incredible experience if not a great deal of wins. Opposition included Rugby Academies of Milan and Padova as well as ASC Milano, Valsuga, CVS Paduva, and Imola and the Eagles finished a respectoable 2-5 while taking a quantum leap in their rugby ability. Off the pitch, highlights included a visit to institute Leone XIII, considered the finest Jesuit School in Italy, the famous Lake Coumo for the parents, and the incredible Piazza Doumo in Milan and the Basilica of St. Anthony in Padua among others. On the trip back west, playoffs and championships awaited all players, with Nationals scheduled in the incredible Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City. The now well steeled Purple entered as the #2 seed and advanced to the championship for the 5th consecutive time with victories over #12 St. Edward 25-5 and #3 Penn 12-5 to meet, in what has become an annual tradition, #1 Sacramento Jesuit in the final. In another back and forth classic that has come to define this historic rivalry, Jesuit came up with a few more plays and a 21-13 victory. Thus the Eagles, given up for dead in February, rose up to finish with a #2 national ranking and carry on the tradition of astronomic success that has come to define Gonzaga Rugby.

2018 – BACK TO THE TOP! The 2018 version of the Gonzaga Rugby Machine returned a now seasoned group of senior and veteran players determined to get back to the precipice that fell just outside of their grasp the year before in their somewhat surprising runner up finish at Nationals

GONZAGA RUGBY HISTORY

2018 despite a very young roster. The player-created theme of “Sweep the Shed”, a nod to the legendary New Zealand All Blacks tradition of leaving everyplace they go, including their locker room, better than they found it, stood as a constant reminder to never be too big to do the little things and was a constant point of emphasis for captains Ryan Ebel, Calder Jones, Will Lyke and Owen Sheehy throughout the season. That attitude and a supreme effort on numerous fronts ultimately led to a gut-check, come-from-behind 31-26 victory over Utah Herriman to re-capture the National Championship, the program’s unprecedented 4th in 5 years! The journey began in the bitter cold of Buchanan Field in late January where the boys honed their skills and focused their resolve on their goal. Continuing our recent tradition of taking on all comers, anywhere, anytime, they then embarked on an extremely difficult regular season schedule which included matches against #3(Club) Royal Irish, #4 Xavier, #4(Club) Fort Hunt, #7 St. Edward, #8 St. Ignatius, #10 Greenwich, #23(Club) Aspetuck, #30 Gregory the Great and #32 Good Counsel, picking up their 9th consecutive Gonzaga (formerly Jesuit) Rugby Classic Championship and their 19th consecutive league championship along the way, a true “triple crown”. For the second year in a row, the Eagles overcame some early season adversity but finished strong to post a regular season record of 17-2. The program continued to be the most popular and successful at Gonzaga with 2 varsity, a JV and a freshman side with over 150 players. The developmental varsity Black team was able to finish 8-7 despite a grueling schedule which included 3 nationally ranked opponents and 29 of its players participated in at least one match at the Purple level. The Junior Varsity, competing in the

MAVRC Tier II Varsity division, finished 6-6, improving throughout the season to advance to the league semi-final. A large freshman group continued to “feed the Beast” with some great rugby where all players gained great experience. On the international stage, an excited group of 43 players and 25 coaches and parents converged upon Dulles International airport in late March for the Gonzaga Rugby Tour de Argentina! Non-rugby player activities in Buenos Aires included community service at the Hogar San Jose Shelter, a tour and mass at the Colegio del Salvador (the most prominent Jesuit School in Buenos Aires) , visits to the Cabildo, the Cathedral, Plaza de Mayo and an exclusive insider’s tour of the President’s Casa Rosada (“Pink House”). Parent activities included wine tastings, river tours, tours of the world famous and acoustically perfect Opera House, the cemetery at Ricoleta, alfajores and coffee at the La Biela Cafe, and of course lots of strolling and shopping. On the rugby side, the players were able to train at the world famous San Isidro Rugby Club and then play against some extremely strong sides including the San Luis Rugby Club (one of the strongest in Buenos Aires), Mar del Plata RC on Thursday and, finally, the powerhouse Sporting RC, the latter two clubs being at the beach resort of Mar del Plata, where we spent the second leg of our Tour. All matches were followed by receptions known as Tres ey Tiempo (“Third Time”), which included dancing, trading and a lot of laughing and fun. The skill level and speed of the rugby was sublime and was incredibly good preparation for the upcoming league playoffs and Nationals. In all, it was an incredibly successful effort and tour against the best Argentine Rugby had to offer! WWW.GONZAGA.ORG • 27

GONZAGA RUGBY HISTORY

2018 It was then stateside to conclude the regular season, win the MAVRC in a tougher than expected final against Good Counsel, and gear up for what became an historic run in the National High School Rugby Championships contested once again at the sweltering hot Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City. The Eagles entered as the #1 seed and came out of the gate quickly in the Quarterfinal against National #10 Greenwich for a 36-17 victory that allowed them to rest some key players and substitute liberally. The semi-final had the trappings of the match of the tournament as it pitted the Eagles against #3 Sacramento Jesuit, the two of whom had played against one another in the past 6 national finals! The match did not disappoint as, despite a rash of serious and in some cases freak injuries, the Eagles outlasted the Marauders 27-17 to advance to the National final for the 7th consecutive year. Coach Baggetta and his staff must have felt that they needed duct tape and glue to patch together their lineup with the number of players unable to suit up due to injury. Rather than hanging their heads, however, Gonzaga simply got to work, displayed their incredible depth and jumped out to an early lead against #2 Herriman of Utah. The Mustangs, however, used to playing at high altitude, began to wear down the Eagles and appeared to have held on for a 26-24 victory after blocking a potential winning drop kick attempt by Scrum Half and Co-Captain Owen Sheehy. In their final possession 28 • GONZAGA RUGBY EAGLES 2018

with no time on the clock and absolutely no margin for error, however, Gonzaga did the little things correctly and methodically worked their way to the try line until Flanker and Co-Captain Will Lyke touched the ball down for score and a 31-26 national championship victory after the conversion! When the final whistle blew immediately as the conversion split the uprights, there was absolute bedlam as the Eagles had come all the way back! What more can be said? Gonzaga is back and stronger than ever! The program continues to attract an incredible mixture of talented players, coaches and parents dedicated to lifting each other up on Eagle’s Wings for the Greater Glory of God! Gonzaga Hail!

Over the past 11 years we have watched our four sons, Dylan 10’, Griffin 12’, Tyler 14’, and Calder 18’ play in hundreds of matches, including Gonzaga’s first appearance in the National Championship final and the latest triumph in the same event. We are so grateful to have witnessed a world of courage, learning, commitment, and resiliency. But both on and off the pitch, the best part has been the enduring and primal exhibition of deeply meaningful brotherhood with their teammates.

With love and lasting gratitude to all the coaches, parents, and players from the Jones family. AMDG 36 • GONZAGA RUGBY EAGLES 2018

“Invictus” BY WILLIAM ERNEST HENLEY

Out of the night that covers me, Black as the pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul. In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed. Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the Horror of the shade, And yet the menace of the years Finds and shall find me unafraid. It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.
