GONZAGA COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL
G
onzaga is the oldest educational institution in the old Federal City of Washington, opening its doors to lay students in 1821 as the Washington Seminary, under the charter of Georgetown College and the direction of Father Anthony Kohlmann. The school, within sight of the Capitol and an easy carriage ride from the White house, flourished for several years. On one famous occasion, President John Quincy Adams came to Commencement and examined the boys in Latin and Greek. However, the school had no endowment, and the rules and regulations of the Society of Jesus did not allow the school to charge tuition. Since tuition was necessary to keep the school open, the Jesuits left in 1827. Although the rules against charging tuition were changed just a few years later, the Jesuits did not return until 1848. The Seminary was instantly successful, and the next year, President Zachary Taylor was present at commencement, a sure sign of the school’s good standing. In May 1858, President James Buchanan signed an Act of Congress that changed the name to Gonzaga College and granted the school a Federal charter. Gonzaga was indeed a college, and actually conferred some bachelor’s degrees before phasing out the baccalaureate program by 1900. The school moved to its present location, North Capitol and Eye Street, NW, in 1871, to be near Saint Al’s, which the Jesuits had built in 1859. The school occupied space that had been a former orphanage (this accounts for the strange shape of some of the classrooms). Renamed Kohlmann Hall, this building housed the Jesuit community as well as the high school. The move was nearly disastrous—there were so few people living in the area that enrollment dropped precipitously, leading to real questions about the school’s survival. The neighborhood gradually expanded, with new homes appearing in what had been fields. The number of students applying to Gonzaga increased, and by its 75th anniversary, the school was ready to expand. The campus expanded with the 1896 dedication of Gonzaga College Hall, which today houses the oldest continually operating theatre in Washington, D.C. A magnificent addition, it still preserves all the scene-changing equipment from that era, and is a virtual museum of theatre in its own right. In 1912, Cardinal Gibbons presided over opening ceremonies of the new “Main Building”, now known as Dooley Hall. The façade, matching the theatre, provided a stately image in the busy neighborhood traffic of Eye Street. This began a long period of peace and stability for Gonzaga. The surrounding area became solidly Irish Catholic, bringing prosperity to school and parish alike.
4 • GONZAGA COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL
The school’s curriculum was based on the universal Jesuit plan of ratio studiorum, found in every Jesuit school in the world. Emphasizing the classics, the curriculum followed a logical progression of studies. Large numbers of Jesuits taught, and there were few lay teachers. Tuition remained at less that $200 per year until 1956. By the early 1960s Gonzaga’s neighborhood changed and inner city tensions escalated. When Saint Al’s parochial school closed, the building was taken over by Gonzaga and is now Cantwell Hall. When the city erupted in riots in 1968, fires burned all around the campus—but the church and school were spared. Soon after those riots, however, a bleak period followed in which enrollment dropped and the school once again, began to fail. By the early 1970s there were serious discussions around closing Gonzaga, or moving its location to the suburbs. Instead, the Maryland Province of Jesuits declared its total commitment to Gonzaga as a school part of and serving the inner city. Positive steps to save the school soon followed, including the dedication of Buchanan Field, Gonzaga’s first home athletic field in 1974, and the addition of the Carmody gym three years later. The 1980s saw the addition of Forte Hall and incorporating Arupe Hall (the building that house the Academy of Notre Dame) to the campus. Much of this activity and revitalization was directed under the watchful eye of Father Bernard Dooley, Gonzaga’s president for 20 years, who died this past year. His tenure was capped with the magnificent restoration of the Great Church of Saint Aloysius. Today, Gonzaga has its largest student body ever, and is physically as well as financially sound. In recent years, the school has again substantially updated and renovated its campus, which now includes Cantwell and Ruesch Hall, a state-of-the-art academic facility with new science, music and technology centers. Its location, which twice in the past appeared to seriously threaten the school’s continued existence, is one of the primary reasons for its success. Throughout the years, Gonzaga has reaffirmed a deep commitment to Jesuit education, and it has chosen to do so in the heart of the inner city, on a street shared with leaders of business and government, and on a block where it ministers to the least fortunate in society. This commitment to remain in the city, to be in media res, at the heart of things, has enabled Gonzaga students to understand the meaning of being Men for Others. A recent Wall Street Journal editorial referred to the school as “the premier Catholic high school of Washington.” Its excellent academic program and the fervor of its spirit make it a special place indeed. Ad Majorem dei Gloriam.
GONZAGA PROGRAM HISTORY
REMEMBERING COACH DON SMITH
D
on Smith was an instrumental part in building a championship caliber soccer program at Gonzaga. He first arrived on Eye Street in the fall of 1981 to teach history and take over as the Varsity Soccer Coach. During the 1980’s, the Gonzaga Soccer Program continued to grow and the combination of a new coach and a talented group of players created a powerhouse soccer team in the DC Metro area. In 1985, Coach Smith and his family relocated to Vermont but returned to Gonzaga in 1992. For the next 5 years he coached the Freshman and Junior Varsity teams before taking over the Varsity Program again. Don enlisted the help of 2 young assistant coaches – Scott Waller, and his son, Tim Smith, who were teammates at Castleton State College in Vermont. While his assistant coaches formulated the team’s tactical approach, Don served as the main motivator. Beginning in 2002, Gonzaga won 3 consecutive WCAC (Washington
Catholic Athletic Conference) Championships and began a streak of 14 consecutive final appearances. Don held a special place in his heart for all the boys that played for him. He stressed the idea of “playing for your teammates” and the importance of working together as a team. He firmly believed that every time you walked on the field you were not playing for yourself but rather you were representing the entire Gonzaga community. He embodied the concept of thinking and caring for others. Don was more than a coach or teacher, he was also a friend, mentor, and spiritual leader. Don Smith retired from teaching and coaching in 2005 and passed away unexpectedly in the summer of 2006. His spirit, attitude, and drive live on in many of the Gonzaga Soccer traditions that exist today. In his memory, the Gonzaga soccer program honors a special player each year with the “Don Smith Award.”

GONZAGA SOCCER COACHES HEAD VARSITY COACH Scott Waller Coach Waller is in his 13th Season coaching the Gonzaga Varsity Soccer team. Scott was a standout player at Castleton State College in Vermont and earned two Academic All-American Honors, NESCA Senior All-Star, and All-Conference 1st Team selection in his sophomore, junior and senior years. Coach Waller arrived at Gonzaga in 1998 after serving as assistant coach in his hometown of Cooperstown, NY. He coached the JV and assisted the Varsity team until 2001 when he moved to Lexington, VA to coach the girls Varsity and JV teams for 3 years at Rockbridge County High School. He returned to Gonzaga in 2004 to be the Assistant Varsity Coach under Coach Don Smith and assumed the Varsity Coach role upon Don’s departure from Gonzaga. Coach Waller was honored as The Washington Post All-Met Coach of the Year after leading the Eagles to back-to-back WCAC Championships in 2007. Coach Waller’s teams have been in nine straight WCAC Championships, winning five of the past eight. Gonzaga’s Varsity team has been a constant in the national spotlight, with the 2009 and 2012 teams both ranked in the top ten in the nation by the Adidas NSCAA coaches’ poll. Scott has coached six Gatorade State Player of the Year recipients and nine 1st team Washington Post All-Met players and has an impressive winning record of 146-42-21. During this past summer Coach Waller was selected to be one of the Head Coaches for Boys High School All–American Game. The Boys High School All–American Game will played this December in Cary, NC. Scott resides with his wife Suzy, in the Del Ray area of Alexandria with his three children: Kira (8), Charlie (6) and Naomi (2).
ASSISTANT VARSITY COACH Jim Kilroy A 2001 graduate of Delbarton High School in Morristown, New Jersey, Jim helped captain his varsity soccer and basketball teams to successful seasons, and was elected all-conference in both sports, while earning the Morris County Scholar Athlete Award his senior season. After attending Notre Dame and graduating with a business degree in 2005, Jim taught and coached in Jackson, Mississippi as part of a graduate education program through the University. Teaching math and coaching, now in his 8th year at Gonzaga, Jim has been involved with the soccer program since his arrival. He spearheads the Gonzaga Summer Soccer Camp program and has assisted Coach Waller for the previous 2 seasons after spending his first 5 years as the JV Head Coach. Jim lives with his wife Tina and his two children, Claire, 3, and Patrick, 2, in Alexandria, VA. They are expecting their third child in October of 2014. He currently coaches the JV golf team in the spring sports season.

HEAD JUNIOR VARSITY COACH Grant Furnary A 2006 graduate from Gonzaga, Grant was a two year Varsity player for the Eagles. He also was a 4 year player for the Varsity Rugby team. Grant went onto Virginia Tech and excelled on the rugby field for the Hokies. After graduating in 2010 with a degree in Business, Grant returned to Eye St. where he works as the Registrar and teaches in the Math Department. Grant also coaches with the Varsity Rugby team at Gonzaga. He is thrilled to be working with the Junior Varsity Soccer Team again this year.
ASSISTANT JUNIOR VARSITY COACH Adrian Oryshkevych Adrian is a 1999 graduate of Gonzaga and was a two year Varsity soccer player under Coach Don Smith. He went on to Fordham University to study history and finished with a B.A./M.A. in 2004. After spending ten years teaching in New York City and New Jersey, the last eight of which were at Saint Peter’s Prep in Jersey City where he coached soccer and taught history, Adrian has made his way back to Eye Street to be a member of the History Department and help coach in the soccer program.
GONZAGA SOCCER COACHES HEAD FRESHMAN COACH Chris Schaefer This is Coach Schaefer’s twelfth year teaching at Gonzaga and his fourth year with Gonzaga Soccer. He was first smitten by the soccer bug as a first through tenth-grader growing up playing soccer in the streets of Mexico, Honduras, Argentina and Chile. Coach Schaefer played high school soccer in Santiago, Chile as well as Pennsylvania. He played for the base soccer team in Rota, Spain while on a stint with the Navy. These days, in addition to his work with the Purple Eagles Freshmen, he serves as a coach and assistant coach for his three children Ann Marie, Sean and Catie’s soccer teams. His most important coaching gig, however, is as assistant coach to Christine Schaefer, his lovely and tireless wife and Head Coach of the boisterous Schaefer clan.
GOALIE COACH Scott Weaver Scott is a 1994 graduate of Chesapeake High School in Pasadena, Maryland and helped his team in 5 successful seasons. In 1999, Scott graduated 2nd in his class from Penn State University with a degree in Structural Engineering and immediately began his career as a bridge engineer. He is currently the Chief Bridge Engineer for the City of Baltimore and drives down to Gonzaga each week to coach our players. He is in his 11th year of coaching at Gonzaga and resides with his wife, Kelly, and their 3 children, Connor, Savannah, and Logan in Pasadena, MD.
ASSISTANT FRESHMAN COACH Patrick Sullivan Patrick is a graduate of Notre Dame’s Theology graduate program and joined Gonzaga a year ago. He has played the game for most of his life but spent his high school and college years on the Cross Country and Track and Field teams. So it is not surprising that his focus as a Gonzaga coach is on fitness and agility. Patrick stayed active in soccer through intramural, club and rec leagues and captained a team through Notre Dame’s highly competitive intramural league and secured a third place finish. All things considered, he ball skills are nothing to marvel at but his love for the game and passion for coaching are unrivaled. He considers it a true honor to be coaching for the Gonzaga soccer program.

GONZAGA VARSITY SENIORS
John Fleury
21
Second year varsity player Jack Fleury was a key contributor to our team’s success. He displayed strong leadership skills and a willingness to do whatever was necessary to help the team. Due to his speed, he could play in multiple positions, including forward and mid-fielder. No player on the team displayed a greater positive attitude and willingness to help and to sacrifice for the benefit of the team.
Thomas Hart
15
Tommy Hart was a solid two year Varsity player and was called upon this season to play left and right defensive back. He was a solid defender who could not be pushed off the ball. But, as a defender, Tommy was also an offensive threat. With the best throwins in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference, Tommy could get the ball into the box from almost any position in Gonzaga offensive end of the field.
12 • GONZAGA COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL
Connor Gallagher
4
Connor played everywhere in the defense for Gonzaga this year. As a second year varsity player Connor exceeded the high expectations set for him by the coaching staff. As one of the Tri-captains, Connor was always pushing his teammates to play their absolute best and led by example. As a center backline defender, Connor faced offensive pressure from the middle of the field and could be counted on to help out on the wings.
Phil Littleton
10
Senior Tri-Captain, Phil was a solid three year varsity player who showed his adaptability by playing both midfield and forward for Gonzaga. He played with passion and a love for the game. When playing forward, Phil would regularly go to the corner and defeat the defensive back. His steady play as a mid-fielder played a key role in allowing Gonzaga to maximize their ball possession.
Devin Hannon
7
Devin challenged defenses with his high speed and intensity on every play. A second year Varsity player, Devin has the heart of a lion. Playing his senior season with a broken arm showed his dedication to the team and teammates. Devin’s ability to “change gears” quickly often caught defenders by surprise and there was rarely a through ball that Devin could not run down.
John Loome
3
Second year Varsity player Jack was a physical presence on defense. His outside rocket of a goal against The Heights, was the lift team needed for a come from behind victory. Composed of a unique blend of competitiveness and size, Jack could win any 50/50 ball and was a weapon with his big throw. Jack defended the backline with great passion and could be counted on to stop offensive advances down the sidelines.
GONZAGA VARSITY SENIORS
Johnny Maier
8
One of the senior Tri-captains and third year varsity player, Johnny commanded our team from the central midfield position. Johnny led by example in practice, was energetic and always early to each training session. He set up drills for the team to work on before other players arrived and led the drills during practice. Johnny controlled the middle of the field with his excellent touch and field of vision.
Ryan Sawczuk
12
Ryan was the “work horse”. Sharing the middle center defensive back duties with Connor Gallagher, Ryan was a force to be considered by approaching offensive players. He could control balls coming to him from any height or direction. His headers were always on mark to a teammate. He outshined all expectations in his first year on varsity. He was a rock in the back and easily won any ball that came in his direction.
Tyler Olmsted
1
Second year Varsity player Tyler coanchored the team between the posts. Tyler’s quick hands and outstanding ability to stonewall breakaways frustrated many teams. He is a competitive and passionate goalkeeper that could be counted on again and again by his teammates to make the big save. Tyler finished his Gonzaga career with an MVP performance in the DCSAA Championship game.
Nico Smurthwaite
9
Nico turned in a great effort during his senior year. As a second year Varsity player played mostly as a forward. With a blend of size and speed, Nico was counted on to bewilder defenses. His heads-up play and determination in the DSCAA State Championship was the creative force behind one of the biggest goals of our season. On corner kicks and throw-ins, Nico was always a scoring threat to opponents.
John Riley
11
John excelled during his senior year on varsity. He played with heart and determination. As a reliable player in all positions, Johnny was an instrumental part of the team’s success. If offense was needed, John was there to press the attack. As a midfielder, John was able to control the possession and execute the crisp pass. On defense, John could stop an opposing player in any one on one situation.
Ned Treacy
13
Second year varsity player Ned capped a successful season as a starting attacking player. In a crowd, Ned’s ability to keep control of the ball was impressive. Ned always had his head up, looking for the correct pass to maintain possession. Ned’s vision and creativity led to many important goals for our team. He could place a header in the corner, drive the ball for a score or earn a goal assist with a crisp pass to the open Eagle. EAGLES SOCCER 2014 • 13

JESUIT CLASSIC TOURNAMENT
T
2014 JESUIT CLASSIC HOSTED BY GONZAGA IN WASHINGTON DC
he end of September marks a tradition of 4 Jesuit High Schools coming together from around the country for a weekend of soccer. Regis from Colorado, Marquette from Milwaukee, Rockhurst from Kansas City, and Gonzaga met for the twelfth annual tournament here in Washington, DC. The Jesuit Classic began in 1997 as a head-to-head match up between Rockhurst and Marquette and was expanded to 4 teams in 2002.
The venue rotates between the 4 schools each year and it is much more than soccer. By traveling to a new school each year, or hosting, the studentathletes get to meet others following the Jesuit tradition. The coaches stay in a hotel but all the boys stay with host families for the weekend. The visiting athletes come to school with their hosts, play soccer for 2 days, and end with a Closing Mass and Dinner for the whole group.
IT IS TRULY A SPECIAL TRADITION!
