G

onzaga is the oldest educational institution in the old Federal City of Washington, opening its doors to lay students in 1821 as the Washington Seminary, under the charter of Georgetown College and the direction of Father Anthony Kohlmann. The school, within sight of the Capitol and an easy carriage ride from the White house, flourished for several years. On one famous occasion, President John Quincy Adams came to Commencement and examined the boys in Latin and Greek. However, the school had no endowment, and the rules and regulations of the Society of Jesus did not allow the school to charge tuition. Since tuition was necessary to keep the school open, the Jesuits left in 1827. Although the rules against charging tuition were changed just a few years later, the Jesuits did not return until 1848. The Seminary was instantly successful, and the next year, President Zachary Taylor was present at commencement, a sure sign of the school’s good standing. In May 1858, President James Buchanan signed an Act of Congress that changed the name to Gonzaga College and granted the school a Federal charter. Gonzaga was indeed a college, and actually conferred some bachelor’s degrees before phasing out the baccalaureate program by 1900. The school moved to its present location, North Capitol and Eye Street, NW, in 1871, to be near Saint Al’s, which the Jesuits had built in 1859. The school occupied space that had been a former orphanage (this accounts for the strange shape of some of the classrooms). Renamed Kohlmann Hall, this building housed the Jesuit community as well as the high school. The move was nearly disastrous—there were so few people living in the area that enrollment dropped precipitously, leading to real questions about the school’s survival. The neighborhood gradually expanded, with new homes appearing in what had been fields. The number of students applying to Gonzaga increased, and by its 75th anniversary, the school was ready to expand. The campus expanded with the 1896 dedication of Gonzaga College Hall, which today houses the oldest continually operating theatre in Washington, D.C. A magnificent addition, it still preserves all the scene-changing equipment from that era, and is a virtual museum of theatre in its own right. In 1912, Cardinal Gibbons presided over opening ceremonies of the new “Main Building”, now known as Dooley Hall. The façade, matching the theatre, provided a stately image in the busy neighborhood traffic of Eye Street. This began a long period of peace and stability for Gonzaga. The surrounding area became solidly Irish Catholic, bringing prosperity to school and parish alike.

H

GONZAGA COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL The school’s curriculum was based on the universal Jesuit plan of ratio studiorum, found in every Jesuit school in the world. Emphasizing the classics, the curriculum followed a logical progression of studies. Large numbers of Jesuits taught, and there were few lay teachers. Tuition remained at less that $200 per year until 1956. By the early 1960s Gonzaga’s neighborhood changed and inner city tensions escalated. When Saint Al’s parochial school closed, the building was taken over by Gonzaga and is now Cantwell Hall. When the city erupted in riots in 1968, fires burned all around the campus—but the church and school were spared. Soon after those riots, however, a bleak period followed in which enrollment dropped and the school once again, began to fail. By the early 1970s there were serious discussions around closing Gonzaga, or moving its location to the suburbs. Instead, the Maryland Province of Jesuits declared its total commitment to Gonzaga as a school part of and serving the inner city. Positive steps to save the school soon followed, including the dedication of Buchanan Field, Gonzaga’s first home athletic field in 1974, and the addition of the Carmody gym three years later. The 1980s saw the addition of Forte Hall and incorporating Arupe Hall (the building that house the Academy of Notre Dame) to the campus. Much of this activity and revitalization was directed under the watchful eye of Father Bernard Dooley, Gonzaga’s president for 20 years, who died this past year. His tenure was capped with the magnificent restoration of the Great Church of Saint Aloysius. Today, Gonzaga has its largest student body ever, and is physically as well as financially sound. In recent years, the school has again substantially updated and renovated its campus, which now includes Cantwell and Ruesch Hall, a state-of-the-art academic facility with new science, music and technology centers. Its location, which twice in the past appeared to seriously threaten the school’s continued existence, is one of the primary reasons for its success. Throughout the years, Gonzaga has reaffirmed a deep commitment to Jesuit education, and it has chosen to do so in the heart of the inner city, on a street shared with leaders of business and government, and on a block where it ministers to the least fortunate in society. This commitment to remain in the city, to be in media res, at the heart of things, has enabled Gonzaga students to understand the meaning of being Men for Others. A recent Wall Street Journal editorial referred to the school as “the premier Catholic high school of Washington.” Its excellent academic program and the fervor of its spirit make it a special place indeed. Ad Majorem dei Gloriam.

GONZAGA PROGRAM HISTORY HHH

REMEMBERING COACH DON SMITH

D

on Smith was an instrumental part in building a championship caliber soccer program at Gonzaga. He first arrived on Eye Street in the fall of 1981 to teach history and take over as the Varsity Soccer Coach. During the 1980’s, the Gonzaga Soccer Program continued to grow and the combination of a new coach and a talented group of players created a powerhouse soccer team in the DC Metro area. In 1985, Coach Smith and his family relocated to Vermont but returned to Gonzaga in 1992. For the next 5 years he coached the Freshman and Junior Varsity teams before taking over the Varsity Program again. Don enlisted the help of 2 young assistant coaches – Scott Waller, and his son, Tim Smith, who were teammates at Castleton State College in Vermont. While his assistant coaches formulated the team’s tactical approach, Don served as the main motivator. Beginning in 2002, Gonzaga won 3 consecutive WCAC (Washington

Catholic Athletic Conference) Championships and began a streak of 14 consecutive final appearances. Don held a special place in his heart for all the boys that played for him. He stressed the idea of “playing for your teammates” and the importance of working together as a team. He firmly believed that every time you walked on the field you were not playing for yourself but rather you were representing the entire Gonzaga community. He embodied the concept of thinking and caring for others. Don was more than a coach or teacher, he was also a friend, mentor, and spiritual leader. Don Smith retired from teaching and coaching in 2005 and passed away unexpectedly in the summer of 2006. His spirit, attitude, and drive live on in many of the Gonzaga Soccer traditions that exist today. In his memory, the Gonzaga soccer program honors a special player each year with the “Don Smith Award.”

HEAD VARSITY COACH Scott Waller Coach Waller has been coaching at Gonzaga since 1998. This is his 12th year as the Head Varsity Coach. He was a standout player at Castleton State College in Vermont, where he earned two Academic All-American honors, NESCA Senior All-Star selection, and All-Conference 1st Team honors in his sophomore, junior, and senior years. Scott arrived at Gonzaga in 1998 after serving as an assistant coach in his hometown of Cooperstown, NY. From 1998 to 2001, he was Assistant Varsity Coach under Hall of Fame coach Don Smith. In 2001, he moved to Lexington, VA, to coach the girls Varsity and Junior Varsity teams for 3 years at Rockbridge County High School. He returned to Gonzaga in 2004 to once more be the assistant under Coach Smith and assumed the role as Head Varsity Coach upon Don’s departure from Gonzaga the next year. Scott was honored as The Washington Post All-Met Coach of the Year after leading the Eagles to back-to-back WCAC Championships in 2007. In his first 10 years, his teams had a string of nine straight WCAC Final appearances, winning five WCAC Championships. In 2014, in its first year eligible, Gonzaga won the DCSAA state championship. Gonzaga’s Varsity team has been a constant in the national spotlight, with the 2009 and 2012 teams both ranked in the top ten in the nation by the Adidas NSCAA coaches’ poll. Scott has coached six Gatorade State Player of the Year recipients and nine 1st team Washington Post All-Met players, and he has an impressive winning record of 159-48-24. He was selected to be one of the head coaches for the 2015 Boys High School All–American Game played in December 2015 in Cary, NC, and was named the WCAC Coach of the Year for the 2015 season. Scott resides with his wife Suzy in the Del Ray area of Alexandria with their three children, Kira (10), Charlie (8), and Naomi (4).

GONZAGA SOCCER COACHES ASSISTANT VARSITY COACH Adrian Oryshkevych ‘99 Adrian is a 1999 graduate of Gonzaga and was a two-year Varsity soccer player under Coach Don Smith. He went on to Fordham University to study history and finished with a B.A./M.A. in 2004. Adrian then spent the next ten years teaching in New York City and at Saint Peter’s Prep in Jersey City, NJ, where he coached the Junior Varsity soccer team for 8 years. He returned to Gonzaga in 2014 to teach in the History Department and coach the Junior Varsity team. He now assists Coach Waller with the Varsity squad.

ASSISTANT VARSITY COACH Mike Wilson ’95 Mike returned to Coach Waller’s Varsity staff this year after a nine-year hiatus. He played soccer all four years while a student at Gonzaga, progressing through the program at all three levels. Mike won the WCAC Championship in 1993, his first year on the Varsity team. He went on to play three years of NCAA Division III soccer at Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA, before earning his degree in International Studies in 1999. After graduating from Dickinson, he was immediately recruited back to Gonzaga by then Varsity coach, Don Smith, as the Head Freshman Coach. After three seasons, Mike was promoted to Head Junior Varsity Coach. In 2005, he joined Coach Waller as an assistant for the Varsity team and, in 2006 and 2007, celebrated Gonzaga’s back-to-back WCAC championships as a member of Coach Waller’s staff. Currently, Mike is a member of Gonzaga’s Alumni and Advancement Office, serving as the school’s Director of Annual Giving Strategy. He lives in Annandale, VA, with his wife Laura and their two children, Cecilia (7) and Colin (4).

HEAD JUNIOR VARSITY COACH Grant Furnary A 2006 Gonzaga graduate, Grant was a two-year Varsity player for the Eagles. He also was a four-year player for the Varsity Rugby team. Grant went on to Virginia Tech and excelled on the rugby field for the Hokies. After graduating from Virginia Tech in 2010 with a degree in Business, he returned to Eye St., where he works as the Registrar and teaches in the Math Department and also coaches the Varsity Rugby team. He is thrilled to be working with the Junior Varsity soccer team again.

ASSISTANT JUNIOR VARSITY COACH Jonathon Ruano Jonathan is a graduate of John Carroll University in Cleveland, OH. After graduating, he taught Theology and coached in the Varsity girl’s program at Elyria Catholic High School. GONZAGA SOCCER COACHES HEAD FRESHMAN COACH Patrick Sullivan Patrick is a graduate of Notre Dame’s Theology graduate program and is happy to be in his third year teaching at Gonzaga. He has played the game for most of his life but spent his high school and college years on the Cross Country and Track and Field teams. It is not surprising, therefore, that his focus as a Gonzaga coach is on fitness and agility. Patrick stayed active in soccer through intramural, club, and rec leagues and captained a team through Notre Dame’s highly competitive intramural league to a third place finish. All things considered, his ball skills are nothing to marvel at, but his love for the game and passion for coaching are unrivaled. He considers it a true honor to be coaching for the Gonzaga soccer program.

ASSISTANT FRESHMAN COACH Luis Chaffo Luis played soccer for many years in his native Peru. As a typical South American player, he also played intramural and club soccer in his college years. He was a coach in the soccer program for four years at the Schools of the Sacred Heart in San Francisco, CA. Luis is a graduate of the San Francisco State University Spanish graduate program and an avid fan of Newcastle United Football Club.

GOALIE COACH Scott Weaver Scott is a 1994 graduate of Chesapeake High School in Pasadena, MD, and helped his team in five successful seasons. In 1999, Scott graduated second in his class from Penn State University with a degree in Structural Engineering and immediately began his career as a bridge engineer. He is currently the Chief Bridge Engineer for the City of Baltimore and drives to Gonzaga each week to coach our players. He is in his 14th year of coaching at Gonzaga and resides with his wife, Kelly, and their 3 children, Connor, Savannah, and Logan, in Pasadena, MD.

Reyni Arbutiski

9

Reyni was a two-year member of the varsity squad. He was one of the team’s best scoring threats from distance. Reyni had a strong leg and quick shot that would often catch the other team’s goalkeeper off-guard. Reyni had several multiple goal games during the season, including wins over St. Mary’s Ryken and Bishop Carrol. He has a strong competitive fire and was a great teammate.

Teddy Joseph

11

Teddy was a very versatile player whose athleticism gave him the ability to play numerous positions during his senior year on varsity. Teddy was particularly effective in the midfield, where he was able to use his speed to create width for the team. Teddy’s relentless energy was a true asset for the team.

GONZAGA VARSITY SENIORS

Davis Baldwin

20

During his senior year on varsity, Davis was a key contributor on defense. Davis supplied both speed and skill at the outside defender position. Davis covered a tremendous amount of ground for the team, often rolling up from his defensive position to get involved in the offense with an eye toward maintaining possession. His energy and work rate were second to none.

Kevin Krivda

18

A two-year varsity player, Kevin was most often found in one of the outside midfield positions. Kevin had a strong competitive spirit and technical skill. He would use his size and speed to stop opponents from advancing down the sidelines. Kevin was also an asset for the team with his strong corner kicks and throw-ins.

Fawzi Beidas

3

A two-year varsity player, Fawzi earned WCAC All-Conference Honorable Mention recognition this year. He was a very active forward who was constantly putting pressure on the opposing team’s defense with his speed and skill. He possesses an aggressive attacking instinct, with a keen focus on putting the ball in the back of the opponent’s net. He scored several important goals during the season including the game winner in the conference quarterfinals and the equalizer against O’Connell in the semifinals. His offensive prowess was a key factor in the team’s success.

Page MacKeigan

23

A two-year varsity defender, he used his strong left foot to connect with our midfield and transition the team forward. Page was often counted on to take free kicks and corner kicks for the team, which relied upon his ability to swing the ball in. Page’s relentless defending was a major contributing factor to the team’s success.

Brady McGowan

24

During his senior year on varsity, Brady played in the midfield, although his abilities allowed him to play several other positions on the field. Brady used his size and speed to stop opposing attacks and push the team forward with quality possession. He scored an important insurance goal in a 2-0 win over Bishop McNamara. Brady’s speed was a true weapon for the team as he was often able to run down a ball that had been played through defenders.

Joey Peterson

8

A two-year varsity player, Joey earned WCAC All-Conference Honorable Mention recognition this year. He was a strong presence in the midfield for our team. Joey rarely lost 50/50 balls. He used his size and strength to win possession and distribute the ball. Joey’s play during the WCAC championship run was an inspiration to his teammates. He played with purpose and passion whether in training or in a game. His leadership by example was one of the keys to our team’s success.

GONZAGA VARSITY SENIORS

Patrick McNamara

22

A two-year varsity player, Patrick was a strong central defender for the team. On a memorable Senior Day against Bishop McNamara, Patrick had a chance to show his versatility. He started the game as the team’s goalkeeper before moving to forward and scoring several goals. Patrick has a great positive attitude and would do anything to help his teammates and the team succeed.

Edwin Ramirez

7

Edwin was a three-year varsity player who was a key member of the very strong midfield group on the team. Edwin has strong technical abilities that he would use whether winning back possession in our own end of the field or pushing forward on the attack. Edwin scored several goals during the season, including a critical insurance goal during a 2-0 victory over Paul VI that was a key game in determining the final regular season WCAC standings.

Ryan “RJ” Moore

10

RJ was a three-year varsity starter and two-year team captain. RJ earned WCAC All-Conference honors three times, including First Team this year. RJ scored several memorable goals, including the game winner in the 2016 WCAC semi-finals and the golden goal against DeMatha to secure the Championship. RJ was a true team player who used his excellent ball control and passing accuracy to maintain possession and assist attacking teammates. His composure on the ball, desire to share possession, and ability to read the game were invaluable to the team’s success.

Devin Stanton

15

Devin was the Co-Captain of the team and a two-year varsity starter. He played both in the midfield and as a defender. Devin was a scoring threat throughout the year and scored a goal in the Bishop McNamara game that remained scoreless well into the 1st half. He used his speed and agility to create goal-scoring chances for himself and his teammates throughout the season. His teammates will always remember the goal celebration at St. John’s that included a run toward the large assemblage of traveling students who were cheering at the game. EAGLES SOCCER 2016 • 13

Conor Todd

4

A two-year member of the varsity squad, Conor played a key role as a defender on the team. He played both center back and outside back at critical times during the season. Conor’s strength and determination were key reasons why the team was able to keep opposing teams from getting close to our goal. His strong play at center back against O’Connell was a big reason the team advanced in the WCAC playoffs. He was a great teammate whose quiet demeanor was counterbalanced by a strong competitive fire and desire to win.

Nick Lazaroae

MGR

Nick was one of our senior managers this year. Though he played soccer at Gonzaga his first three years, due to an injury he was unable contribute on the field his senior year and found his niche with the varsity program as a team manager and photographer. Nick’s affable spirit and sartorial sense will be missed.

Devin Treacy

MGR

Our other senior manager this year, Devin was involved with the soccer program for all four years. He was extremely helpful in keeping the varsity team equipped and motivated and even helped to keep track of statistics for the team. His commitment and support for Gonzaga soccer was greatly appreciated.

JESUIT CLASSIC TOURNAMENT

2016 JESUIT CLASSIC HOSTED BY REGIS JESUIT HIGH SCHOOL

he Eagles travelled to Denver, Colorado for the Jesuit Classic, where they played this year’s host, Regis Jesuit High School, and Rockhurst High School. The Jesuit Classic is an annual tradition of four Jesuit high schools— Regis from Denver, Rockhurst from Kansas City, Marquette University High School from Milwaukee, and Gonzaga College High School. This year marked the 15th consecutive year of the four schools coming together from around the country for a weekend of soccer. The Jesuit Classic began as a head-to-head matchup between Rockhurst and Marquette in 1997 and was expanded to four teams in 2002.

Because Rockhurst and Marquette were the creators of the event, they continue to play each other every year. The Jesuit Classic, however, is much more than a few competitive soccer games. The tournament’s location rotates annually between the four schools. By traveling to a different Jesuit high school each year, or hosting other schools, the student-athletes get to meet others following the Jesuit tradition. This year visiting players were hosted by Regis players and their families for the weekend, attended school with their hosts on Friday, played soccer for two days, and ended with a closing Mass and dinner for the teams from all four schools and their families.
