GONZAGA COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL

G

onzaga is the oldest educational institution in the old Federal City of Washington, opening its doors to lay students in 1821 as the Washington Seminary, under the charter of Georgetown College and the direction of Father Anthony Kohlmann. The school, within sight of the Capitol and an easy carriage ride from the White house, flourished for several years. On one famous occasion, President John Quincy Adams came to Commencement and examined the boys in Latin and Greek. However, the school had no endowment, and the rules and regulations of the Society of Jesus did not allow the school to charge tuition. Since tuition was necessary to keep the school open, the Jesuits left in 1827. Although the rules against charging tuition were changed just a few years later, the Jesuits did not return until 1848. The Seminary was instantly successful, and the next year, President Zachary Taylor was present at commencement, a sure sign of the school’s good standing. In May 1858, President James Buchanan signed an Act of Congress that changed the name to Gonzaga College and granted the school a Federal charter. Gonzaga was indeed a college, and actually conferred some bachelor’s degrees before phasing out the baccalaureate program by 1900. The school moved to its present location, North Capitol and Eye Street, NW, in 1871, to be near Saint Al’s, which the Jesuits had built in 1859. The school occupied space that had been a former orphanage (this accounts for the strange shape of some of the classrooms). Renamed Kohlmann Hall, this building housed the Jesuit community as well as the high school. The move was nearly disastrous—there were so few people living in the area that enrollment dropped precipitously, leading to real questions about the school’s survival. The neighborhood gradually expanded, with new homes appearing in what had been fields. The number of students applying to Gonzaga increased, and by its 75th anniversary, the school was ready to expand. The campus expanded with the 1896 dedication of Gonzaga College Hall, which today houses the oldest continually operating theatre in Washington, D.C. A magnificent addition, it still preserves all the scene-changing equipment from that era, and is a virtual museum of theatre in its own right. In 1912, Cardinal Gibbons presided over opening ceremonies of the new “Main Building”, now known as Dooley Hall. The façade, matching the theatre, provided a stately image in the busy neighborhood traffic of Eye Street. This began a long period of peace and stability for Gonzaga. The surrounding area became solidly Irish Catholic, bringing prosperity to school and parish alike.

4 • GONZAGA COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL

The school’s curriculum was based on the universal Jesuit plan of ratio studiorum, found in every Jesuit school in the world. Emphasizing the classics, the curriculum followed a logical progression of studies. Large numbers of Jesuits taught, and there were few lay teachers. Tuition remained at less that $200 per year until 1956. By the early 1960s Gonzaga’s neighborhood changed and inner city tensions escalated. When Saint Al’s parochial school closed, the building was taken over by Gonzaga and is now Cantwell Hall. When the city erupted in riots in 1968, fires burned all around the campus—but the church and school were spared. Soon after those riots, however, a bleak period followed in which enrollment dropped and the school once again, began to fail. By the early 1970s there were serious discussions around closing Gonzaga, or moving its location to the suburbs. Instead, the Maryland Province of Jesuits declared its total commitment to Gonzaga as a school part of and serving the inner city. Positive steps to save the school soon followed, including the dedication of Buchanan Field, Gonzaga’s first home athletic field in 1974, and the addition of the Carmody gym three years later. The 1980s saw the addition of Forte Hall and incorporating Arupe Hall (the building that house the Academy of Notre Dame) to the campus. Much of this activity and revitalization was directed under the watchful eye of Father Bernard Dooley, Gonzaga’s president for 20 years, who died this past year. His tenure was capped with the magnificent restoration of the Great Church of Saint Aloysius. Today, Gonzaga has its largest student body ever, and is physically as well as financially sound. In recent years, the school has again substantially updated and renovated its campus, which now includes Cantwell and Ruesch Hall, a state-of-the-art academic facility with new science, music and technology centers. Its location, which twice in the past appeared to seriously threaten the school’s continued existence, is one of the primary reasons for its success. Throughout the years, Gonzaga has reaffirmed a deep commitment to Jesuit education, and it has chosen to do so in the heart of the inner city, on a street shared with leaders of business and government, and on a block where it ministers to the least fortunate in society. This commitment to remain in the city, to be in media res, at the heart of things, has enabled Gonzaga students to understand the meaning of being Men for Others. A recent Wall Street Journal editorial referred to the school as “the premier Catholic high school of Washington.” Its excellent academic program and the fervor of its spirit make it a special place indeed. Ad Majorem dei Gloriam.

GONZAGA PROGRAM HISTORY

REMEMBERING COACH DON SMITH

D

on Smith was an instrumental part in building a championship caliber soccer program at Gonzaga. He first arrived on Eye Street in the fall of 1981 to teach history and take over as the Varsity Soccer Coach. During the 1980’s, the Gonzaga Soccer Program continued to grow and the combination of a new coach and a talented group of players created a powerhouse soccer team in the DC Metro area. In 1985, Coach Smith and his family relocated to Vermont but returned to Gonzaga in 1992. For the next 5 years he coached the Freshman and Junior Varsity teams before taking over the Varsity Program again. Don enlisted the help of 2 young assistant coaches – Scott Waller, and his son, Tim Smith, who were teammates at Castleton State College in Vermont. While his assistant coaches formulated the team’s tactical approach, Don served as the main motivator. Beginning in 2002, Gonzaga won 3 consecutive WCAC (Washington

Catholic Athletic Conference) Championships and began a streak of 14 consecutive final appearances. Don held a special place in his heart for all the boys that played for him. He stressed the idea of “playing for your teammates” and the importance of working together as a team. He firmly believed that every time you walked on the field you were not playing for yourself but rather you were representing the entire Gonzaga community. He embodied the concept of thinking and caring for others. Don was more than a coach or teacher, he was also a friend, mentor, and spiritual leader. Don Smith retired from teaching and coaching in 2005 and passed away unexpectedly in the summer of 2006. His spirit, attitude, and drive live on in many of the Gonzaga Soccer traditions that exist today. In his memory, the Gonzaga soccer program honors a special player each year with the “Don Smith Award.”

GONZAGA SOCCER COACHES HEAD VARSITY COACH Scott Waller Coach Waller has been coaching at Gonzaga since 1998. This is his 13th year as the Head Varsity Coach. He was a standout player at Castleton State College in Vermont, where he earned two Academic All-American honors, NESCA Senior All-Star selection, and All-Conference 1st Team honors in his sophomore, junior, and senior years. Scott arrived at Gonzaga in 1998 after serving as an assistant coach in his hometown of Cooperstown, NY. From 1998 to 2001, he was Assistant Varsity Coach under Hall of Fame coach Don Smith. In 2001, he moved to Lexington, VA, to coach the girls Varsity and Junior Varsity teams for 3 years at Rockbridge County High School. He returned to Gonzaga in 2004 to once more be the assistant under Coach Smith and assumed the role as Head Varsity Coach upon Don’s departure from Gonzaga the next year. Scott was honored as The Washington Post All-Met Coach of the Year after leading the Eagles to back-to-back WCAC Championships in 2007. In his first 12 years, his teams had a string of nine straight WCAC Final appearances, winning six WCAC Championships. In 2014, in its first year eligible, Gonzaga won the DCSAA state championship. Gonzaga’s Varsity team has been a constant in the national spotlight, with the 2009 and 2012 teams both ranked in the top ten in the nation by the Adidas NSCAA coaches’ poll. Scott has coached six Gatorade State Player of the Year recipients and nine 1st team Washington Post All-Met players, and at the start of the 2017 season he had an impressive winning record of 184-62-29. He was selected to be one of the head coaches for the 2015 Boys High School All–American Game played in December 2015 in Cary, NC, and was named the WCAC Coach of the Year for the 2015 season. Scott resides with his wife Suzy in the Del Ray area of Alexandria with their three children, Kira (11), Charlie (9), and Naomi (5).

ASSISTANT VARSITY COACH Mike Formant ‘13 Mike is a 2013 graduate of Gonzaga and was a member of the 2012 WCAC Championship team. He went on to win an NCAA DII National Championship with Lynn University in 2014. A dual sport athlete, Mike also played on the Lynn Men’s Lacrosse team. He completed his bachelor’s degree of Business Entrepreneurship in just three years while graduating Magna Cum Laude. Before returning to assist Coach Waller and the Varsity squad, Mike played one season for Hobart Zebras F.C. of the Australian National Premier Leagues-Tasmania. He is proud to be back on Eye Street .

ASSISTANT VARSITY COACH Adrian Oryshkevych ‘99 Adrian is a 1999 graduate of Gonzaga and was a two-year Varsity soccer player under Coach Don Smith. He went on to Fordham University to study History and finished with a B.A./M.A. in 2004. Adrian then spent the next ten years teaching in New York City and at Saint Peter’s Prep in Jersey City, NJ, where he coached the Junior Varsity soccer team for 8 years. He returned to Gonzaga in 2014 to teach in the History Department and assists Coach Waller with the Varsity squad. He lives in College Park, MD.

ASSISTANT VARSITY COACH Mike Wilson ’95 Mike returns for his second year as an assistant coach for the Varsity team. He played soccer all four years while a student at Gonzaga, progressing through the program at all three levels. Mike won the WCAC Championship in 1993, his first year on the Varsity team. He went on to play three years of NCAA Division III soccer at Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA, before earning his degree in International Studies in 1999. After graduating from Dickinson, he was immediately recruited back to Gonzaga by then Varsity coach, Don Smith, as the Head Freshman Coach. After three seasons, Mike was promoted to Head Junior Varsity Coach. In 2005, he joined Coach Waller as a Varsity assistant coach and celebrated Gonzaga’s back-to-back WCAC championships in 2006 and 2007. Currently, Mike is a member of Gonzaga’s Alumni and Advancement Office, serving as the school’s Director of Annual Giving Strategy. He lives in Annandale, VA with his wife Laura and their two children, Cecilia (8) and Colin (5).

GONZAGA SOCCER COACHES JUNIOR VARSITY COACH Devon Leary ‘06 Devon is a proud 2006 graduate of Gonzaga and a two year Varsity soccer player under Coaches Don Smith and Scott Waller. He went on to play Division I Club Soccer at Miami (OH) and NCAA Division III soccer at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, before graduating from St. Mary’s in 2011 with a degree in Political Science. Currently, Devon is the Assistant Dean of Students and Diversity Coordinator at Gonzaga. He is also earning a Masters in Education from the University of Virginia. Devon bleeds purple and doesn’t hide his passion for Gonzaga soccer.

JUNIOR VARSITY COACH Jonathan Ruano Jonathan is a graduate of John Carroll University in Cleveland, OH. After graduating, he taught Theology and coached in the Varsity girl’s program at Elyria Catholic High School. He has been around the game since a young age, having played in the NCSL and for St. John’s College High School. He enters his 5th year coaching and second in the Gonzaga program. He is honored and proud to be part of Campus Ministry and the Gonzaga soccer program.

HEAD FRESHMAN COACH Patrick Sullivan Patrick is a graduate of Notre Dame’s Theology graduate program and is happy to be in his third year teaching at Gonzaga. He has played the game for most of his life but spent his high school and college years on the Cross Country and Track and Field teams. It is not surprising, therefore, that his focus as a Gonzaga coach is on fitness and agility. Patrick stayed active in soccer through intramural, club, and rec leagues and captained a team through Notre Dame’s highly competitive intramural league to a third place finish. All things considered, his ball skills are nothing to marvel at, but his love for the game and passion for coaching are unrivaled. He considers it a true honor to be coaching for the Gonzaga soccer program.

ASSISTANT FRESHMAN COACH Luis Chaffo Luis played soccer for many years in his native Peru. As a typical South American player, he also played intramural and club soccer in his college years. He was a coach in the soccer program for four years at the Schools of the Sacred Heart in San Francisco, CA. Luis is a graduate of the San Francisco State University Spanish graduate program and an avid fan of Newcastle United Football Club.

ASSISTANT FRESHMAN COACH Christopher Schaefer Is a lifelong player and devotee of the “beautiful game.” He spent his formative years in Latin America—particularly Mexico and Argentina—where he had his first opportunity to play organized soccer. He played in high school and on a base team while serving in Spain in the United States Navy. He has played or coached soccer teams since since high school and has coached his own children at both the recreational and competitive club level of soccer. He was formerly the Freshman soccer head coach at Gonzaga and has coached at other area schools as a Junior Varsity coach.

GOALIE COACH Scott Weaver Scott is a 1994 graduate of Chesapeake High School in Pasadena, MD, and helped his team in five successful seasons. In 1999, Scott graduated second in his class from Penn State University with a degree in Structural Engineering and immediately began his career as a bridge engineer. He is currently the Chief Bridge Engineer for the City of Baltimore and drives to Gonzaga each week to coach our players. He is in his 14th year of coaching at Gonzaga and resides with his wife, Kelly, and their 3 children, Connor, Savannah, and Logan, in Pasadena, MD.

GONZAGA SOCCER SENIOR DAY

EAGLES SOCCER 2017 • 11

GONZAGA VARSITY SENIORS Jack was a two-year starter at center back. He emerged during his junior year with consistent play on the back line and earned Gonzaga’s most improved player award. As a senior, he kept the back line organized and was a key to the defense conceding only five goals in WCAC regular-season play, earning him a spot in the Jack Boland 18 DCSAA all-star game. Jack thwarted numerous goal-scoring opportunities with his speed and ability to cover ground, and his team could always count on him to blunt the counter attack on the few occasions the back line found itself on the back foot. Although self-effacing, he had the heart and determination of a champion.

One of three senior team captains, Peter was a three-year varsity player and two-year starter. He twice earned WCAC All-Conference honors. Peter played every field position at some point during his varsity career. His versatility and unselfish play was a key factor in the team’s 2016 WCAC championship run. As a senior, Peter led the Peter Dernelle 10 team from the center midfield, unsettling the opposing team’s attack with his spirited play, confident tackling, and uncanny ability to step into the opponent’s passing lanes. He turned several close games, including the regular-season finale against Good Counsel, decidedly in Gonzaga’s favor with his disruptive presence. His quiet confidence on the ball, willingness to share possession, and dynamic passing often kept the Eagles on the attack and spearheaded the buildup of play. The box score could never reflect fully Peter’s contributions to the team.

A two-year varsity player, Ethan anchored the team’s central midfield as a starter his senior year, for which he earned WCAC All-Conference honors. His constant defensive presence and ball control skills allowed the team to maximize possession. His speed and tenacity often allowed him to get and win 50/50 balls and Ethan Boshart 6 launch the Gonzaga attack. Ethan’s strong run into the box during overtime of the 2017 WCAC finals drew the foul that would result in Gonzaga winning back-toback championships. Ethan redefined the phrase “shake and bake” when he was on the field.

Nick excelled during his senior season as one of a trio of varsity goalkeepers. He was equally comfortable coming off his line as he was on it, which allowed the defense to play with great confidence. He recorded three clean sheets during the WCAC regular season and earned WCAC All-Conference first team honors. His stop of the fifth penalty Nicholas Gerlach 70 kick taken by St. Albans in the penalty shootout of the DCSAA championship game put his team in a commanding position to secure the victory. Nick’s ability to have fun and keep his team loose made the year all the more enjoyable.

12 • GONZAGA COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL

GONZAGA VARSITY SENIORS Henry was another of the trio of goalkeepers the team could count on this season, his second on the varsity squad. His work in practice helped to keep the team sharp and focused all season long. Henry saw extensive action in the senior-day game against Bishop McNamara, helping to record a shutout. He exhibited a spirHenry Hodges 0 ited dedication and devotion to Gonzaga soccer and was a fantastic teammate. Always positive and determined to help the team succeed, Henry was always there to bring the team up. He’ll always be remembered by his teammates on the 2016 team whenever they look at the crest on their championship jackets.

Solu returned to the soccer pitch his senior year as the team’s manager. His assistance with daily team tasks was a great benefit to the coaching staff and his teammates. He was an enthusiastic and positive presence in practice and on the sidelines during games. Solu’s chants in the huddle always got the team pumped up Solu Obiorah MGR and ready for battle. Although he didn’t play the game on the field, he was nonetheless an important and invaluable member of the team. His commitment to Gonzaga soccer was greatly appreciated.

Rex was a three-year varsity player as an outside midfielder. His dynamic play and scoring as a junior was a big part of the 2016 team’s success. An unfortunate injury jeopardized Rex’s 2017 season early, but his dedication and commitment to his rehab served as an inspiration to both his teammates and coaches, who dedRex Minturn 2 icated themselves to playing and being their best for Rex this season. Although Rex ultimately would not return to the field before the season ended, he always provided his teammates encouragement and continued to help the team by bringing needed energy to the bench during the games. Rex was and will always be one of a kind.

Rhys joined the varsity Eagles as a forward for his senior season. He earned WCAC All-Conference honors and was named to the 2017 DCSAA all-star game. A formidable presence on the attack, Rhys tallied several multigoal games. He netted two goals against then No. 12 ranked Marquette University High School in the 2017 7 Jesuit Classic, for which Rhys Owen he received the tournament’s most valuable player award and earned honors as D.C.’s Max Preps player of the week. He also scored twice against Good Counsel in the regular-season finale to help Gonzaga clinch the number one seed in the WCAC playoffs. Although blessed with a sunny disposition, Rhys was an assassin at the top of the formation.

EAGLES SOCCER 2017 • 13

GONZAGA VARSITY SENIORS Beakal played his senior season at Gonzaga as a midfielder and forward. He was a creative player who provided instant energy to the team with his every appearance, playing with great speed and heart and displaying ferocious pressure on the opponent’s possession. Beakal broke Wilson’s back by scoring twice in the semi-finals of the Beakal Sebsebe 8 DCSAA playoffs, and he confidently took and scored the game-winning penalty kick to secure the championship against St. Albans. His celebrations and infectious spirit were second to none.

A two-year varsity player, and senior captain and starter, Evan twice earned WCAC All-Conference honors. With creative play as an outside midfielder, he scored or facilitated numerous goals with his dangerous runs and crosses into and through the opponent’s box. His spectacular free kick against Regis High School in the Evan Stipano 17 2017 Jesuit Classic set the tone for the weekend and sparked the team to its first win in the tournament since 2013. He opened the Eagles’ scoring account in the 2017 WCAC playoffs by deftly corralling a deep pass from the midfield and confidently sliding it inside the far post for a goal against St. Mary’s Ryken. Evan’s passion for the game and his school was always present.

Austin was a threeyear varsity player and earned All-Conference honors as a senior starter. A versatile player, with strong foot skills and great creativity on the ball, he played as both a midfielder and forward. Austin’s header deep into the St. Albans net during the waning seconds of the 2017 DCSAA championship Austin Smith 11 game was the equalizer that secured Gonzaga the opportunity to play on and ultimately win the game in a penalty shoot-out. He was named the game’s most valuable player for his outstanding efforts. Austin’s fiery demeanor motivated his teammates all season.

Ryan was the anchor of Gonzaga’s back line for three years as a varsity player and starter. A senior captain, he confidently pushed his teammates to play their absolute best and commanded the team with his composure and vocal leadership. He twice earned WCAC All-Conference honors, including first team honors his senior Ryan Teuschl 12 year. As an outside and center back, Ryan possessed the ability to fearlessly chase down and stop attacking opponents, separate them from the ball, and quickly advance the ball up the field both by assertively taking space and with dangerous left-footed kicks into Gonzaga’s offensive third. He scored or assisted on a goal in each of the WCAC championship games he played in: a goal in the 2015 game, an assist on the golden goal that won the Eagles the 2016 championship, and the game-winning goal that earned the team a repeat championship in 2017. Ryan was a clutch player and model teammate.

JESUIT CLASSIC TOURNAMENT

T

2017 JESUIT CLASSIC HOSTED BY ROCKHURST HIGH SCHOOL

he Eagles journeyed to Kansas City, Missouri for the 20th Annual Jesuit Classic hosted by Rockhurst High School. The Jesuit Classic is an annual tradition of four Jesuit high schools - Rockhurst from Kansas City, Regis Jesuit High School from Denver, Marquette University High School from Milwaukee, and Gonzaga College High School. It began as a match between Rockhurst and Marquette in 1997 and was expanded to four teams in 2002. The tournament’s location rotates annually between the four schools, giving their student-athletes, coaches, and families

the opportunity to meet others following the Jesuit tradition. This year, Rockhurst players hosted the visiting players, who attended school with their hosts on Friday. After two days of exciting and hard fought matches, the weekend ended with a closing Mass and dinner for the teams and their families. The Eagles won the Jesuit Classic this year for the first time since 2013. The team defeated Regis Jesuit 7-3 on Friday and dominated then No. 12 ranked Marquette 3-0 on Saturday.
