GONZAGA COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL
G
onzaga is the oldest educational institution in the old Federal City of Washington, opening its doors to lay students in 1821 as the Washington Seminary, under the charter of Georgetown College and the direction of Father Anthony Kohlmann. The school, within sight of the Capitol and an easy carriage ride from the White house, flourished for several years. On one famous occasion, President John Quincy Adams came to Commencement and examined the boys in Latin and Greek. However, the school had no endowment, and the rules and regulations of the Society of Jesus did not allow the school to charge tuition. Since tuition was necessary to keep the school open, the Jesuits left in 1827. Although the rules against charging tuition were changed just a few years later, the Jesuits did not return until 1848. The Seminary was instantly successful, and the next year, President Zachary Taylor was present at commencement, a sure sign of the school’s good standing. In May 1858, President James Buchanan signed an Act of Congress that changed the name to Gonzaga College and granted the school a Federal charter. Gonzaga was indeed a college, and actually conferred some bachelor’s degrees before phasing out the baccalaureate program by 1900. The school moved to its present location, North Capitol and Eye Street, NW, in 1871, to be near Saint Al’s, which the Jesuits had built in 1859. The school occupied space that had been a former orphanage (this accounts for the strange shape of some of the classrooms). Renamed Kohlmann Hall, this building housed the Jesuit community as well as the high school. The move was nearly disastrous—there were so few people living in the area that enrollment dropped precipitously, leading to real questions about the school’s survival. The neighborhood gradually expanded, with new homes appearing in what had been fields. The number of students applying to Gonzaga increased, and by its 75th anniversary, the school was ready to expand. The campus expanded with the 1896 dedication of Gonzaga College Hall, which today houses the oldest continually operating theatre in Washington, D.C. A magnificent addition, it still preserves all the scene-changing equipment from that era, and is a virtual museum of theatre in its own right. In 1912, Cardinal Gibbons presided over opening ceremonies of the new “Main Building”, now known as Dooley Hall. The façade, matching the theatre, provided a stately image in the busy neighborhood traffic of Eye Street. This began a long period of peace and stability for Gonzaga. The surrounding area became solidly Irish Catholic, bringing prosperity to school and parish alike.

The school’s curriculum was based on the universal Jesuit plan of ratio studiorum, found in every Jesuit school in the world. Emphasizing the classics, the curriculum followed a logical progression of studies. Large numbers of Jesuits taught, and there were few lay teachers. Tuition remained at less that $200 per year until 1956. By the early 1960s Gonzaga’s neighborhood changed and inner city tensions escalated. When Saint Al’s parochial school closed, the building was taken over by Gonzaga and is now Cantwell Hall. When the city erupted in riots in 1968, fires burned all around the campus—but the church and school were spared. Soon after those riots, however, a bleak period followed in which enrollment dropped and the school once again, began to fail. By the early 1970s there were serious discussions around closing Gonzaga, or moving its location to the suburbs. Instead, the Maryland Province of Jesuits declared its total commitment to Gonzaga as a school part of and serving the inner city. Positive steps to save the school soon followed, including the dedication of Buchanan Field, Gonzaga’s first home athletic field in 1974, and the addition of the Carmody gym three years later. The 1980s saw the addition of Forte Hall and incorporating Arupe Hall (the building that house the Academy of Notre Dame) to the campus. Much of this activity and revitalization was directed under the watchful eye of Father Bernard Dooley, Gonzaga’s president for 20 years, who died this past year. His tenure was capped with the magnificent restoration of the Great Church of Saint Aloysius. Today, Gonzaga has its largest student body ever, and is physically as well as financially sound. In recent years, the school has again substantially updated and renovated its campus, which now includes Cantwell and Ruesch Hall, a state-of-the-art academic facility with new science, music and technology centers. Its location, which twice in the past appeared to seriously threaten the school’s continued existence, is one of the primary reasons for its success. Throughout the years, Gonzaga has reaffirmed a deep commitment to Jesuit education, and it has chosen to do so in the heart of the inner city, on a street shared with leaders of business and government, and on a block where it ministers to the least fortunate in society. This commitment to remain in the city, to be in media res, at the heart of things, has enabled Gonzaga students to understand the meaning of being Men for Others. A recent Wall Street Journal editorial referred to the school as “the premier Catholic high school of Washington.” Its excellent academic program and the fervor of its spirit make it a special place indeed. Ad Majorem dei Gloriam.
GONZAGA PROGRAM HISTORY
REMEMBERING COACH DON SMITH
D
on Smith was an instrumental part in building a championship caliber soccer program at Gonzaga. He first arrived on Eye Street in the fall of 1981 to teach history and take over as the Varsity Soccer Coach. During the 1980’s, the Gonzaga Soccer Program continued to grow and the combination of a new coach and a talented group of players created a powerhouse soccer team in the DC Metro area. In 1985, Coach Smith and his family relocated to Vermont but returned to Gonzaga in 1992. For the next 5 years he coached the Freshman and Junior Varsity teams before taking over the Varsity Program again. Don enlisted the help of 2 young assistant coaches – Scott Waller, and his son, Tim Smith, who were teammates at Castleton State College in Vermont. While his assistant coaches formulated the team’s tactical approach, Don served as the main motivator. Beginning in 2002, Gonzaga won 3 consecutive WCAC (Washington
Catholic Athletic Conference) Championships and began a streak of 14 consecutive final appearances. Don held a special place in his heart for all the boys that played for him. He stressed the idea of “playing for your teammates” and the importance of working together as a team. He firmly believed that every time you walked on the field you were not playing for yourself but rather you were representing the entire Gonzaga community. He embodied the concept of thinking and caring for others. Don was more than a coach or teacher, he was also a friend, mentor, and spiritual leader. Don Smith retired from teaching and coaching in 2005 and passed away unexpectedly in the summer of 2006. His spirit, attitude, and drive live on in many of the Gonzaga Soccer traditions that exist today. In his memory, the Gonzaga soccer program honors a special player each year with the “Don Smith Award.”

GONZAGA VARSITY SENIORS Jack Dougherty was a two-year varsity defender. Unfortunately, his senior year was marred by injury, but when he was healthy, Jack was able to contribute greatly to the backline, and steadied the defense. He distributed the ball well from the back and supported the attack going forward.

Mark Western was a three-year varsity player and played most of his minutes in the backline. A tenacious defender with an immense heart, he thwarted offensive attacks with his nononsense attitude and desire to win. His craftiness with the ball and versatility was a key factor in the team’s WCAC championship run. Mark would Mark Western 4 contribute two assists in the final against Good Counsel, one off a corner kick and the other off of a 50-yard free-kick.

Ryan Adoremos was a two-year varsity player who played most of his minutes in the central midfielder and wing defender positions. As a reliable player in all positions, Ryan was an instrumental part of the team’s success. As a quick and feisty defender, he was able to use his speed to thwart most attackers. As a pensive midfielder, Ryan was able to control the possession and execute a welltimed pass.
Ian Granthon was a two-year varsity player who played the bulk of his minutes as a forward and wing midfielder. His fearless play showed itself as he went into challenges without any concern except to win the ball. Ian would contribute two goals in the win against D.C. rival WIS as well as Paul VI, and a huge goal he scored on senior night against St. John’s.
GONZAGA VARSITY SENIORS Max Ludwikowski was a two-year varsity player and really made his mark in his senior year as a central midfielder. His size and ability to distribute the ball made him a very dangerous player and in the end, a key part of the offense. Max would win many headers and also was able to use his body to shield the ball as he Max Ludwikowski 9 would move it around from wing to wing. In the end, he was a calm and steady presence in the middle of the field and proved invaluable to the Eagles’ attack.
Finn McCaslin was a senior captain and three-year starter at center back. He kept the backline organized and was a key to the defense conceding only six goals in WCAC regular-season play, earning him a spot in the DCSAA all-star game. Finn thwarted numerous goal-scoring opportunities with his speed, ability to cover Finn McCaslin 10 ground, and crushing tackles. Although selfeffacing, he had the heart and determination of a champion and would score the game-winning goal in the WCAC Championship against Good Counsel.
Ryan Elie was a threeyear varsity player and starter. A senior captain, he confidently pushed his teammates to play to their absolute best and commanded the team with his composure. He twice earned WCAC AllConference honors, including first-team honors his senior year. As a wing midfielder and forward at times, Ryan Elie 11 Ryan had an ability to soar through the air and hit shots that only he could. He certainly made his mark in his senior postseason as he netted 10 goals and assisted on 3 others in seven playoff games, including the equalizer in the WCAC Championship game against Good Counsel, and two goals in the win over Sidwell Friends in DCSAA Championship. Ryan was a clutch player and a model teammate.

GONZAGA VARSITY SENIORS John Hodges was a defensive stalwart in his senior year. While his junior year was plagued with injury, John had a superb senior campaign, rarely showing up on the scorecard but making a huge difference in the backline defensive efforts. His ability to shield the ball with his body, his smart play, and his determination John Hodges 12 to win made him invaluable especially when it came to the playoffs. John would even tally a goal against E.L. Haynes in the DC State tournament which got the scoring going in an eventual 4-2 win, propelling the Eagles to a State Championship appearance.
Wyatt Moll was a two-year varsity player who played all over the pitch. He was always willing to do what was needed and what was best for the team. If that meant starting as a midfielder or as a forward or coming off the bench, Wyatt was just happy to be able to contribute. He did not shy away from any task that was put before Wyatt Moll 17 him but embraced it. He was a model senior who showed dedication and grit. In the final stretch, he was even called upon to play as a defender and filled in beautifully in the DC State tournament.
Christian Maalouf played center back and was almost always the tallest person on the pitch. He kept the backline organized and never hesitated to go in on a 50/50 ball. On the ground Christian maintained a good touch on the ball and great instincts on when to go forward or when to fall back. He made it difficult for any attack to materialize and led the team in minutes played.
Kento SalgadoNakamura was a two-year varsity player and a crafty wing midfielder. Kento always had his head up, looking to connect a pass or maintain possession, or stealthily making advances into the attacking third. He would score a key goal early in the season against Ireton.

Constantine Bayz played his senior season at Gonzaga as a midfielder and forward. While his minutes were not plentiful, he always showed up ready to play and do what was asked of him. Constantine never complained and was grateful to be part of the team. Constantine scored two great goals for the Eagles.
Alex Svenburg was a two-year varsity player and played the majority of his minutes as a wing midfielder. He had a cannon of a left foot and used it dangerously in the attacking third. The coaches demanded a lot out of Alex and he rose to each challenge, even delivering a key assist in the DCSAA Semifinal match against E.L. Haynes.

JESUIT CLASSIC TOURNAMENT
2019 JESUIT CLASSIC HOSTED BY MARQUETTE UNIVERSITY HIGH SCHOOL
T
he end of September marks a tradition of four Jesuit High Schools coming together from around the country for a weekend of Soccer. Regis Jesuit from Colorado, Marquette from Milwaukee, Rockhurst from Kansas City, and Gonzaga met for the 22nd annual Jesuit Soccer Classic in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Jesuit Classic began in 1997 as a head to head matchup between Rockhurst and Marquette and has now expanded to 4 teams since 2002.
The venue rotates between the four schools each year, and it is much more than soccer. By traveling to a new school each year or hosting, the student-athletes get to meet others following the Jesuit Tradition. This year the visiting players were hosted by Marquette players and their families for the weekend, played soccer for two days, went to a horrifying haunted house, and ended with a closing Mass and dinner for the teams from all four schools and their families.
