Spring 2013

Players, Parents and Friends of Gonzaga Rugby, 2013 was a year that Gonzaga rugby will celebrate for quite some time.  Our numbers hit a new high with 210 boys participating in our program.  Our varsity teams successfully defended PRU (14 in a row), Jesuit Rugby Classic (4th in a row) and MAVRC (5th) championships.  A trip to South Bend IN would have the eagles advancing to the final game and coming up a little short 21-16 in an attempt to win a National Championship.  The JV also won a PRU title (3rd in a row) and the freshman collected PRU (3rd in a row), Jesuit Rugby Classic (2nd in a row) and Frederick Fast Trac championships. An important part of our team this year was the outstanding leadership from our captains Matt Flynn, Dom Plantamura and Ben Cima.  Ben and Jimmy Ronan would represent the USA as members of the High School All American team during spring break in England while the rest of the team traveled to Argentina and Uruguay.  All league selections would include Jack Carroll, Matt Flynn, Tommy Rippert, Will Clougherty, Dom Plantamura, Charlie DePont, Jimmy Ronan, Ben Cima, Frank Ruzicka, Matt Ruiters and Michael Barry.    It takes a village to accomplish all that we did this year. I want to take time to thank all involved in no particular order. First, the players are to be congratulated for their commitment top to bottom with the best practice attendance numbers we have ever had. The result was outstanding play on the field in a championship season for all teams. The reason for those numbers and accomplishments is the great work of our coaches. I get a lot of credit for the tremendous work of the coaches which isn’t really fair to them. I believe that we have a staff second to none in the country, so thanks go out to our Varsity coaches Peter, Paolo, James, Grant, Hammer and Arno. Our JV staff of Farrah, Pat, Rob, Brian, Billy and Connor thank you as well. Finally thanks to the Freshman staff of Chas, Everest, Paul, Bill, Joe and Jack great work boys. Our other specialist coaches Chris, Richard and Mac are also deserving of our thanks. As usual the support we get from the school is awesome. Thanks go out to Fr. Planning, Fr. Conti, Joe Reyda, Casey O’Neill, Jim Morgan and Debbie Onufrychuk. Special thanks go out to Penny and Colleen for keeping our boys in one piece. Finally and most importantly thanks to the boosters led by our All-world president Anne Marie Abod and a cast of thousands (I know and you know who you are). This program would be unmanageable without the boosters and there is nothing that you won’t do to support your sons and our school. It also wouldn’t be nearly as much fun without you. All of the above is what I like to refer to as the Big Giant Purple Heart (BGPH). This is the soul of Gonzaga rugby and is what makes the experience so special. Our players are a reflection of how much they care about each other, nurtured by the coaches and the boosters. The passion our boys play with and the enjoyment they get from this game is so rewarding for our coaches and I’m sure the parents appreciate that as well. Never was it more evident than at Nationals where at the end of a heartbreaking loss where they had given their all, the realization of the seniors and underclassmen that they had played their last game together prompted an extremely emotional response that was so moving that even our coaches had to make excuses that their was something in their eyes BGPH. We often say that it’s the journey not the result that makes an experience special BGPH. I couldn’t be prouder of all of you players, coaches and parents. Memories of these experiences enrich my life. BGPH BGPH Lee Kelly

Spring 2013 Spring 2013 Dear Gonzaga Rugby Community, This season, Gonzaga Rugby reached new levels in all phases of the program. Participation is the highest it’s ever been. We saw a 20% increase this year to over 220 players and we remain the largest sport at Gonzaga. The future is bright! On the field once again, each team earned championship honors in 2013, including second in the nation! The hallmark of Gonzaga’s performance on the field is based on solid fundamentals and strategy – the teachings of our coaching staff. Our sons learn the game of Rugby from the basics of positioning and tackling to the technical side of developing a unique game strategy. This leads to a respect of the sport that carries over to success on the pitch. Led by our Director of Rugby, Lee Kelly, our coaching staff is the very best. The knowledge and experience the boys get from Rugby will be with them always. Thank you Coaches for your commitment to sustaining the Gonzaga Rugby Tradition. What can I say about our parents and volunteers? Simply stated, we have the best parent support and involvement of any sport anywhere! Our Booster schedule this year was very aggressive beginning with moving the entire process online, then jumped right into events starting with the Fifth Quarter Celebration, then registration, leading to our regular season, Touring Argentina and Uruguay, the Jesuit Rugby Classic, PRUs and Nationals. The Purple was always out selling, helping, raising money, coordinating and having fun. It’s also a great example for our sons. Our parents are what make the Rugby Program to thrive! Finally, a special thank you to all of our sponsors and advertisers. It is due to your continued support that we are able to sustain such a wonderful program and create such an amazing experience for our rugby players. I really appreciate the opportunity to serve this year. It was a privilege to be part of Gonzaga Rugby. GO EAGLES! Sincerely, Anne Marie Abod President Gonzaga Rugby Boosters

GONZAGA COLLEGE HISTORY THE JESUIT TRADITION

J

esuits and education. These two words combined denote excellent preparation for young people anywhere in the world. Jesuits and their lay colleagues seek to bring to full expression the talents of young people within the Christian tradition in their schools. This has been the case in Washington since 1821, when Gonzaga’s venerable predecessor, the Washington Seminary, was founded. In 1858, the name changed to Gonzaga College when President Buchanan signed the Act of Congress incorporating the school legally. Then, the school was located on F Street, N.W. It moved to North Capitol and Eye Streets, N.W. in 1871. Throughout that whole time, the school sought, and seeks, to help young people grow toward religious, intellectual and social maturity. Committing itself to a downtown location in the 1960s, Gonzaga serves a uniquely diverse student body, from all points of the compass. Students come here, and with the best advice and help, construct their own schedule of learning which will best help them develop their strengths. These include, for our students, commitment to the teachings of Jesus Christ, dedication to academic excellence, personal service

to other people, especially those in need, and deep and fulfilling involvement in sporting and other co-curriculars.

THE SPIRIT OF GONZAGA At Gonzaga there is a tremendous sense of community; all Washington knows that Gonzaga students are outstanding, spirited, special persons. Because of Gonzaga’s amazing location, her students are on-the-scene participants in the cultural, intellectual, and political happenings of the Federal City. More importantly, students come to Gonzaga from every part of the entire metropolitan area. Increasingly, they use Metrorail to nearby Union Station; many come by Metrobus, commuter rail and carpool. Gonzaga students learn from one another. They are intellectually talented and racially, economically, geographically, and socially diverse. Gonzaga’s spirit embraces them and brings them all together in a caring, warm community where they meet other students who will be among their closest life-long friends.

ACADEMIC CHALLENGE Gonzaga offers outstanding academics. Gonzaga students work hard to complete a sophisticated academic program in which they learn how to understand the thoughts and achievements of others as they learn themselves to think and achieve. They learn to read and write effectively, to appreciate and create beauty, to understand that people are wonderfully diverse. Gonzaga students study and apply mathematics until they are at home with abstract and logical thinking. In Gonzaga’s acclaimed science program, students become scientists as well as humanists. Gonzaga graduates enjoy an intellectual balance because they have studied deeply in various subjects. 16 • GONZAGA RUGBY EAGLES 2013

GONZAGA COLLEGE HISTORY At Gonzaga, students grow increasingly responsible for their own learning. Gonzaga teachers—intellectually and humanly competent and experienced men and women—care most deeply that their students grow and learn. They stress in each course skills which will last and support further learning. And they are warm, friendly people whom students comfortably seek out for needed help.

COURSES GONZAGA STUDENTS TAKE: The Gonzaga student completes the following academic requirements: • four years of religion • four years of English • one year beyond Algebra II/Trigonometry in Mathematics • four years of history/social studies • to the third level of a language (French, German, Spanish or Latin) • three years of science: biology, chemistry, physics, selected electives or AP levels of science • one year of physical education and health • one year of art • the Social Justice Program for community service

Gonzaga students develop responsibility, discipline, and skills of working together effectively through activities and sports. More importantly, they have fun together. Gonzaga’s athletes compete on teams in: • Baseball • Rugby • Basketball • Soccer • Crew • Water Polo • Cross-Country • Tennis • Football • Track • Golf • Wrestling • Swimming • Diving • Lacrosse • Ice Hockey Homerooms also sponsor intramural teams in 3 sports. Almost every student is involved in some club or organization. These activities include three different publications, student council, dramatics, debate and speech, band, the WZAG TV station, and more than a score of other clubs and teams and associations.

Many additional courses are available: • four levels of Latin • three levels of Greek • independent tutorial in English • computer programming • advanced art, music, choral arts • social sciences: government, psychology, world problems, economics • advanced placement (college level) courses are offered to qualified students in: each modern language, each science, calculus, English, American and European History, Computer Science • Honors philosophy Students may arrange to take additional courses at area universities.

OTHER WAYS TO LEARN Gonzaga students participate in an amazing variety of activities. Play rehearsals, football practice, and newspaper deadline rushes draw students together and bring them into close contact with faculty members who coordinate school activities.

GONZAGA RUGBY HISTORY HUMBLE BEGINNINGS – THE 1980S

THE 2000’S – BECOMING A POWERHOUSE

The history of Rugby Football at Gonzaga dates back to the fall of 1987. A few students, inspired by tales of sporting glory from their brothers and friends in college, brought the ‘Nobel Art” to their beloved school on Eye Street. The school administration did not share the enthusiasm of these brave innovators and they were forced to form “Eye Street Rugby” to realize their dream. This un-recognized club began play, as part of a six-team PRU High School Division, in the spring of 1988. They recorded only one win in their first two seasons, an inauspicious beginning to a dynasty.

This is the period where Gonzaga moved into the big time, becoming the Rugby powerhouse it is today. Expanded coaching staffs developed under the watchful eye of current Director of Rugby Lee Kelly have continued to improve the level of the team’s play by adapting to the changing styles and laws of the game. The club expanded from 2 teams in 2000 to 6 teams in 2013. This provided an opportunity for many more players to gain experience and more importantly, valuable playing time. It was also during this time that the Eagles began a tradition that persists today, the annual spring tour. Gonzaga Rugby has toured the Cayman Islands, England, Ireland, Wales, France, Italy, Spain, Argentina, and Uruguay. These tours have been instrumental in improving the level of Gonzaga’s Rugby by continuously challenging more experienced teams of a high caliber. On the field, the Eagles have won 13 PRU Championships, 5 MAVRC Championships, 6 MARFU Championships and multiple regional tournaments during the decade and participated in 9 National Championship tournaments. Recent years have introduced a new and exciting feature of Gonzaga’s Rugby season, The Annual Jesuit

THE 1990S – BIG CHANGES BETTER RUGBY The 90s saw a steady increase in the number of players and the number of victories. The School finally wised-up and gave the Rugby team varsity status in 1994 and the team’s name changed to Gonzaga Rugby. The improvement in their Rugby abilities soon brought the “Men of Eye Street” the Cheery Blossom Festival crown, their first PRU championship and a visit to the Nationals where they placed third (1998). The 1990s are most notable for the creation of Gonzaga Rugby legend JP Perez who, after a stellar playing career, became the first and only (so far) alumni to take up the reins as Head Coach.

Rugby Classic, which Gonzaga sponsors with Georgetown Prep, Rugby Virginia and the Jesuit Academy of Washington. Gonzaga’s Varsity Team has won four consecutive Jesuit Classic titles.

GONZAGA RUGBY’S WORLD-WIDE AMBASSADORS Over the years, many Gonzaga Rugby players and alumni have been selected for USA Rugby National squads at the U17, U18, U19 and U20 level. This demonstrates the increased national and international recognition that Gonzaga’s Rugby Program has achieved over the last twelve years. Many of these players have been selected for prestigious tours with the various national teams including trips to United Kingdom, Ireland, Chile, Uruguay, Kenya, France, Georgia, and Argentina. In the true spirit of Gonzaga our international players have always behaved like gentlemen and proved to be leaders both on and off the pitch. Gonzaga has also hosted a number of touring teams from the great rugby playing nation’s of the world including teams from the Pembrokeshire 20 • GONZAGA RUGBY EAGLES 2013

The Rugby Eagles had an outstanding domestic season this year which included travel to Pennsylvania, Indiana, and North Carolina to face some of the top high school teams in the country. The Varsity Purple won their 5th MAVRC title and a 4th consecutive Jesuit Classic title. They had six wins against nationally ranked Top-20 teams and spent most of the year ranked #1 in the country. They also made a fifth consecutive trip to the final four at the USA Rugby National High School Championships coming up short against Jesuit-Sacramento in the finals. Varsity captains Matt Flynn, Dom Plantamura and Ben Cima with excellent support from other team leaders provided able assistance to Coach Kelly and his staff. Besides the Varsity Purple, Gonzaga Rugby fielded five other teams including the Varsity White, Sophomore Purple, Sophomore White and two Freshmen Teams. All of these teams earned championship honors during the 2013 season. These honors included PRU Divisional Championships at all age levels making it an Eagles Rugby championship sweep for a second year

GONZAGA RUGBY HISTORY in a row.  This bodes well for the future of Gonzaga Rugby. The Gonzaga Rugby program made another successful visit to South America in 2013 playing matches in Argentina and Uruguay. The matches in Argentina feature games against our old friends Centro Naval, a new opponent from Chivilcoy and a match against reigning U.S. National High School Champions Dixon (California), who were also on tour, which ended in a 29-17 win for Gonzaga. In Uruguay, the Eagles renewed their rivalry with successful tours both as players and as ambassadors for Gonzaga Rugby. Gonzaga’s Rugby would be unmanageable without the tireless support of a “cast of thousands” who make a sports program a success. Gonzaga Rugby is indebted to Fr. Planning, Fr. Conti, Joe Reyda, Casey O’Neill, Jim Morgan and Debbie Onufrychuk for their support and to Penny Lynch and her staff for keeping our boys healthy and in one piece. As in past year, the Gonzaga Rugby Boosters were crucial to all of the Program’s successes. President Anne Marie Abod, Vice President John Nalls, Treasurer Andrew Marcou, Secretary Mary Rippert, and Tour Treasurer Cheryl Hughes, made many of this season’s successes possible.

against fellow “Jesuits” from Seminario in Montevideo and played three matches in Punta Del Este including games against a Uruguayan National U-17 squad and a Uruguayan U-17 Developmental squad. This tour was a great experience for all of the players, coaches and parents. As always, the excellent opposition and team bonding lead to much improved standards of play once the players returned home. Ben Cima and Jimmy Ronan were selected for the USA Rugby High School All-Americans tours of England and Argentina and Uruguay.
