They’re staying: three planning commissioners will not step down By Jim Fields jfields@mechlocal.com
Two more members of the Goochland County Planning Commission have decided not to resign as requested by the Goochland County Board of Supervisors. In a letter sent via email and regular mail dated Feb. 3, 2012, to the board of supervisors and county administrator Rebecca T. Dickson, Goochland Planning Commission Chairwoman Courtney Hyers from District 5 and James P. Atkinson from District 1, joined Ty Querry from District 2 in announcing they would not resign. The letter said that “the Board’s request for resignations of planning commissioners in mid-term implicates state law governing planning commissions. Virginia law requires all jurisdictions in Virginia to establish planning commissions to serve as advisory bodies on land use matters. State law requires that planning commissioners be appointed to specific terms of office and provides that they may not be removed except for just cause. In Goochland County, commission members are appointed to two-year terms, and may serve for a maximum of four terms.”

Goochland School Board Chariwoman Beth Hardy talks last week about the board’s busy first month on the job, which resulted in a balanced budget being approved on Jan. 31. Planning Commission Chairwoman Courtney Hyers says she will not resign, as have two other members.
The commissioners’ letter was in response to a letter sent by the board of supervisors to the commission members dated Jan. 23, 2012, requesting the resignation of each commission member by Feb. 3, 2012. One reason given for the request was to reduce the number of members on the commission from 10 to 5. see Planning commission > page 2

Hardy looks back at first month By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com
After one month on the job, Goochland School Board Chairwoman Beth Hardy is proud of the board’s work so far. “We produced a balanced budget –which I believe is the first time in I don’t how many years that the school board has produced a balanced budget within the prescribed appropriation of the board of supervisors,” said Hardy. “That in and of itself is kind of a big deal.” The 2012 Goochland School Board was faced with a
daunting task, with all five districts represented by a new member after the November election. Decades of experience on the board left with the defeated incumbents and the new members had to learn the ropes at the same time they faced a deadline of Jan. 31 to complete a budget. So they started in December. Early in the month the school board-elect invited the public to a public meeting with Goochland Superintendent Linda Underwood. Hardy called it at the time an “orientation for both the

After meeting every week in January, the Goochland School Board passed a balanced budget for fiscal year 2013 on the last day of the month. The vote was unanimous. The budget assumes a $17,386,626 transfer from the county. The total operating fund expenditures and revenues balance out at $23,624,799. “It’s been a long, difficult, gut-wrenching four weeks,” said school board chairwoman Beth Hardy after the vote. Hardy emphasized that there could be further tweaks in the process going forward if more savings are found. She said the focus was on classrooms and students and establishing credibility with the new board of supervisors, which must approve the budget and appropriate the money for the transfer. Along the way the school board began a reorganization of the schools, eliminating the directors of elementary and secondary education and adding a second assistant superintendent for operations position and a director of instruction. Also eliminated were the enrichment and gifted specialist, the student services specialist and one of two assistant principals at Goochland High School. Big savings were achieved by outsourcing all but five head custodians ($191,000) and factoring in a revised health plan and/ or contribution strategy ($181,000). Not all these changes were welcomed. During the public comment period Susan Gray presented the board with a petition with 300 signatures opposing the custodial outsourcing. “The custodians are just as important as the superintendent,” said Gray. Other savings come from reducing all 260-day employees to 253 days ($88,446). Two furlough days are added back,

adding $117,000 to the operating fund. Other additions are a GHS library and media specialist ($58,490), more than $111,000 for the textbook matching fund, an elementary special education teacher ($57,573) and a math/English teacher for Goochland Middle School ($60,323). Other additions included smaller amounts for lead teacher compensation, sheet music, band instruments and funds for robotics and Lego competitions. Two new contingency funds, one for maintenance and one for instruction were also created. The board also approved a Capital Improvement plan through 2019 to the tune of $32 million. The first item of which is to begin work on a walkway from the Specialty Center and upgrade the Goochland Elementary Communication System GES at a projected cost of $150,000. Another topic which surfaced during
the public comment period was concern over bullying in the schools. Jo D. Hoskin said she had learned a friend’s daughter was on the way to Patient First after being bullied for the fourth time. “Three different children have been beaten up in the last two weeks,” said Hoskin, who said the system’s policy on bullying should be reexamined. School board chairwoman Beth Hardy said later in the week that school principals will make presentations on discipline policies. “Meanwhile we are examining policies,” said Hardy, adding that it was “incredibly important” to have clear policies on bullying. The complete budget plus last week’s night’s presentation are accessible on the schools Web site at https://sites.google. com/a/glnd.k12.va.us/sb-agendas/january-31-2012.
James Melton of District 2 could not be reached but his term expires in April of this year. Eugene Bryce from District 1, whose term expires in March 2013, declined to comment when reached by phone last week. Board of Supervisors Chairman Ned Creasy called the three commissioners refusing to resign “a bump in the road.”
“They need to remember they weren’t elected and we were,” Creasy said by phone Feb. 6. “The voters who elected us sent us a message. In the future, I’d like to see the terms of the Planning Commission members end in February after an election. That way the newly elected board of supervisors would be able to appoint their own people.”

The Virginia General Assembly is close to making Sunday hunting in the state legal, and recently, a number of local citizens had varying opinions about the issue. If the bill becomes law, it would permit Sunday hunting on private property, either by the landowner, the landowner’s spouse or the children of the landowner, or with written permission of the landowner. It prohibits hunting within 250 yards of a place of worship. “It’s a controversial issue,” said Tim Martin. “For as long as I’ve been hunting, you haven’t been able to hunt on Sunday. People and animals, everybody needs a break and Sunday seems like a good day for it. “A lot of people can’t hunt during the week and can only hunt on Saturday,” he added. “Being able to hunt on Sunday would give them an extra day, and I can understand how they would want to.” Marty Shores doesn’t hunt, but he has an opinion about

the bill. “I think it’s a good idea to legalize Sunday hunting,” he said. “I don’t hunt myself. However, I have land and would give permission when asked by others to hunt my land.” Greg Wolfrey and his wife Betty had opposite opinions. “No question about it, I think it’s a good idea,” he said. “I’d hunt on Sunday and I’m sure my friends would also.” His wife disagreed. “I’m not for Sunday hunting,” Betty said. “I think everyone needs a day of rest, even the animals.” Daniel Simms hunts around
Hadensville. “I’m kind of in the middle on it,” he said. “As long as the law for Sunday hunting has stipulations, I’d be for it. If it passes, I’m sure I’ll be doing some Sunday hunting.” Matthew Stephens also had concern for the animals. “If it was legal, I’d probably hunt on Sunday, but I don’t think they should pass the bill to make it legal,” he said. “I think the animals need a break, and if they pass this law, someone will be hunting them seven days a week. Animals need a break just like people do. So, I hope the bill doesn’t become law.”

The Goochland High School American Red Cross Club held their second annual blood drive last week, collecting 45 units of blood, according to Red Cross representative Kimberly F. Thomas. About 65 people showed up to donate. “The students signed up 60 donors,” said Thomas, who added that the GHS club is chartered by the American Red Cross. As always, Thomas said that types O positive and negative were always in demand. She added that holiday periods always increase demand for blood so that there was still a need to rebuild blood supplies after the recent Christmas and New Year’s holidays. “Each donation can save up to three lives,” said Thomas, or up to six lives in the case of infants.

Thomas said that a healthy donor can give blood every 56 days. As a side benefit, donors get a mini-physical every time they donate. Red Cross personnel check their blood pressure and iron levels among other things. Bill James, proprietor of Subway, donated food for nourishment for donors; and Valerie Pace, who volunteered and headed up Relay for Life for many years, donated her time in baking goods and providing drinks like juice and V-8 for this event, said club sponsor Elizabeth NelsonLyda. Last Wednesday’s drive, held at the Company 5 Firehouse, saw a nmber of familiar faces in the crowd of waiting donors. About 5 p.m. Wednesday found Sheriff Jim Agnew patiently awaiting his turn to donate. School board member Mike Payne and supervisor Manuel Alavrez also showed up to donate. School board chairwoman Beth Hardy reportedly also donated earlier in the day.
tions,” said Hardy. “In looking at it, literally getting cross-eyed, we thought, there’s got to be a better way.” That better way led to the new school board making some basic changes, at the same time making the board’s meetings more accessible - they’re now live streamed on the schools’ Web site. They voted to create a new assistant superintendent of schools for operations, while eliminating the directors of elementary and secondary education plus the student services specialist. Throughout the month Hardy has repeated the two basic themes that drive the new school board, streamling administration and operations and focusing on the classroom. “It’s a delicate balance,” explained Hardy. “Administration supports teachers.” As far as the school administration goes, Hardy said the board is still looking at all positions.

Sharon Lawson squeezes that red rubber ball last week as she donates blood at the Goochland High School American Red Cross Club Blood Drive.
“The reorganization is not done,” said Hardy, explaining that there may be more consolidation possibilities. As for focusing on the classroom, Hardy pointed out the added funds for stipends for lead teachers, added funds for sheet music and tuition reimbursement for teachers. The budget also adds a math/english teacher at GMS and a special education teacher. Some decisions have not been easy. Despite opposition voiced at two meetings, the board voted unanimously to continue with their plan to outsource custodial services. “The general feeling is the outsourcing was the right thing to do,” said Hardy, who said that the board is looking to put out a new Request for Proposals (RFP) that hopefully would produce a better outcome for the outsourced employees. “If we can effect a savings while treating people well, that’s the goal,” said Hardy. This Tuesday (Feb. 7) a
strange thing will happen - the school board will not meet! It will be a welcome break for the members, who have been working at a pace that Hardy called “unsustainable.” But next week they will be back at it, with a joint meeting with the board of supervisors set for Monday, Feb. 13 and a regular school board meeting on Tuesday. The meeting Feb. 13 will be critical, said Hardy. “It’s very important to build credibility and trust with the board of supervisors.” If a comment from one of the supervisor’s is any indication, the new school board is well on its way to building that credibility. At last week’s budget meeting, three supervisors were present. At the end BOS chairman Ned Creasey noted the change from last year, when the two boards were at odds with each other. “It’s different this year,” he said.

Gun law about to change This is in a way, good news for Democrats, since as the economy continues to gradually improve, Obama’s re-election seems more likely to many voters. And although he has not introduced any gun control legislation, the fear remains among Second Amendment advocates that such is in the works, not to mention possible Supreme Court appointments in a second term that could negate the recent high court decision that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to own weapons.
Sunday Hunting Here in Goochland there has been a bit of interest in the almost certain repeal of the ban on Sunday hunting, a move also made possible by the realignment of power in state government, although a number of Senate Democrats voted for its repeal and some GOP members did not. We have never understood the rationale behind the ban, given that it would appear unconstitutional for it to be based on Sunday being the Christian Sabbath, much like the old blue laws that forced retail outlets to close on Sunday. So although we gave up hunting awhile back and understand the desire of landowners for a day off, there seems to be no reason to retain the ban. As with the repeal of the one-guna month ban, Gov. McDonnell has indicated he will sign it.

Control advocates will likely recoil in horror soon when Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell signs into law a bill axing the one-handgun-a month law, which passed the Virginia Senate Monday on a 21-19 vote, reflecting the new reality of party power in that chamber. The law was originally passed in 1993 when the current instant background checks did not exist as an effort to reduce firearms being purchased in the state and resold illegally elsewhere. New York City was a favorite destination of gun traffickers. But today, with the computerized federal background check, not to mention the (considered by some) redundant state check, proponents argue that the one-gun limit is no longer necessary. They appear to have prevailed. Gun control and all things firearms related are always lively issues in Virginia politics, serving as a litmus test for many as to any given politico’s commitment either to limited government or public safety, take your pick depending which side of the fence you are on. Coincidently your faithful correspondent visited the most recent local gun show (another favorite target of gun control advocates) this past weekend. Held at the racetrack on Laburnum Avenue in Henrico, the crowd was larger than any I had ever seen in any previous visit. One dealer displayed a portrait of President Barack Obama emblazoned with the title “Salesman of the Month.”

Letters continued from > page 6 rural western Goochland for more than 30 years, our farm is in a conservancy with the Va. Dept of Forestry in attempt to maintain its rural character. Over the years we have limited hunting access due to abuses, even so I had to clean up three deer carcasses left on the roadside of our property. The recent approval that permits the use of rifles in what was a shotgun (shot) only big game season in Goochland has done nothing to improve our concerns. Sunday should continue as a day a peace for the people who live in areas where hunting can occur. If the Sunday hunting ban is overturned we will not allow Sunday hunting to occur on our farm by those who otherwise have hunting permission. I would suggest that other land owners that currently permit hunting might respond as I suggest or even more strongly. One needs only to live in areas
where hunting is permitted to appreciate the need for at least one day of quiet , instead of roads lined with hunters, trucks, dogs and the cacophony of what can resemble a war zone to appreciate at least one day of shooting respite. Richard Carchman Columbia

Incoming elected officials appoint people they think will do a good job representing all the citizens of the areas they represent. Can you imagine the hoopla had some of President Bush’s appointees refused to leave when President Obama took office? The same principle of a new board appointing new people to serve on commissions and committees should apply in Goochland. Power and ego do strange things to people. They can’t let go of that control they’ve had and believe that only they know best. As of this week, planning commission members Courtney Hyers, appointed by former District 5 supervisor Jim Eads, Ty Querry, appointed by former District 2 supervisor Bill Quarles and Jamie Atkinson, appointed by former District 1 supervisor, Andrew Pryor, have not tendered their resignations. What is it these appointees don’t get? The citizens of this county, thru the ballot box, wanted change. Pure and simple. Now, you
holdouts get a life and truck on down the road. You are holding up progress! Ann James Oilville

Local bakery to provide gluten-free desserts to Whole Foods stores Contributed Report 3 Fellers bakery announced recently that it will soon have gluten-free desserts available in the bakery section of Whole Foods grocery stores. Seven varieties of individually packaged specialty treats will be available in select Mid-Atlantic stores within the next few weeks. “Our products are all-natural,” said Mike Feller, president of 3 Fellers. “We like to use the finest
ingredients that we can find. We try to make the highest quality products possible, and that is in keeping with the philosophy of Whole Foods stores and the products that they carry.” The 3 Fellers gluten-free desserts soon to debut in the Whole Foods stores bakery section include two types of brownies, two types of mini pies and three varieties of specialty cupcakes. “Our desserts look just as
good and taste just as good – if not better – than non-gluten-free desserts,” said Feller. “When we create a brownie or a cookie or any of our baked goods, we pride ourselves on that.” The Virginia-based company was started by Feller’s mother in her own gluten-free kitchen in 2004 as an answer to members of the family living with celiac disease seeking a gluten-free diet with food that
tasted good. She began fixing special gluten-free meals for friends and family, opening a bakery in the Richmond suburb in 2007. While the bakery still serves local customers, the company has since turned its sights more toward its wholesale business. It features products in the frozen foods or bakery sections of some grocery store chains, as well as some local organic and natural specialty food stores. About 3 Fellers, LLC: 3 Fellers

Unfortunately I believe his perspectives on Sunday hunting, as written in “Move to allow Sunday hunting disregards the common good”, are misguided and indeed contradict the core convictions he espouses. Whereas his objective of achieving the “Common Good” is noble, upholding the antiquated ban on Sunday hunting doesn’t get us there. For the last 2 years I have had the honor of serving as 7th Congressional district representative on the Board of Game and Inland Fisheries. When I accepted the appointment I made a commitment to uphold the mission of the Agency which rightfully includes “…to work diligently to safeguard the rights of the people to hunt, fish and harvest game as provided for in the Constitution of Virginia”. For years, the agency has responded to repeated requests to repeal the ban on Sunday hunt-
ing, quite rightfully, by stating that the prohibition was outside the authority of the Department, subject to modification only by the General Assembly. Understanding this constraint, this past summer I introduced a resolution to the Board urging the General Assembly to repeal the ban on Sunday hunting. The resolution outlined more than a dozen positive outcomes should Sunday hunting be allowed in Virginia, was adopted nearly unanimously and communicated to all members of the General Assembly. The rationale set forth in the resolution is varied, and the justification merits more space than permitted here, but can be summarized in 4 principals: 1. Hunting Heritage – the single greatest impediment to recruiting youth to hunting is lack of opportunity. Youth soccer practice and piano recitals shouldn’t displace time spent in the woods, field and on the water. The General Assembly should recognize the importance of youth recruitment for continuing our hunting heritage. 2. Individual Liberty & Property Rights –Property own2546710-01

submit that peaceful coexistence of hunters and non-hunters is nearly certain under a Sunday hunting construct. It may take some additional coordination with private landowners, but birdwatching, hiking, equestrian activities and other worthy pursuits are thriving in 44 other states that permit some form of Sunday hunting. In the coming weeks, Delegate Ware, as Chair of the Natural Resources Subcommittee, will vote on Senate Bill 464 relaxing the ban on Sunday hunting. The bill is not an outright repeal, but rather applies to private property and public waters only, excludes hunting deer with dogs and provides a 250 yard buffer around houses of worship. It is important that Delegate Ware and his General Assembly colleagues hear from their constituents the promise that Sunday hunting holds for our heritage, economy, liberties and conservation – all of which contributes to the “Common Good”. Your readers are encouraged to learn more about the benefits of Sunday hunting by visiting www.virginiasundayhunting. org.

ers should be free to decide for themselves whether hunting should or shouldn’t take place on their private land without politicians artificially limiting their options. 3. Jobs and Economic Development – Lifting the ban on Sunday hunting would result in 4000 jobs, $100 million in wages, $300 million in economic benefit; all without any subsidies, taxes or government regulation. This is low hanging fruit on the path to economic recovery. 4. Land Conservation – Hunting license sales and the federal matching funds, all paid by sportsmen, are responsible for the acquisition and conservation of nearly all of the 200,000 acres held by the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, more land than any other state agency. With license sales less than half of what they were in the 1970s, those who care about land conservation should support Sunday hunting. Opponentsof Sundayhunting are mixed company. Arguments from PETA and anti-hunting organizations are not worthy of a response. Objections for safety reasons are statistically unsubstantiated. Other concerns, such as from my equestrian friends, necessitate further discussion as cited in the last Whereas clause of the DGIF resolution. I would

Salem Christian girls varsity team is on a mission By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent
After amassing a 13-3 record, the Salem Christian varsity girl’s basketball team finally played their first home game this season…. Sort of. The Saints celebrated senior night last week taking on James River Home School at the Rockville Community Center off Pouncey Tract Road. It’s the closest the team will get to a home court edge this year, and the girls took full advantage of the opportunity. Katherine Barth led the Saints with 14 points and senior Hannah Gilbert contributed 11 as the Saints got their 14th victory of the season with a 40-6 thrashing of the Eagles. Coach J.B. Bailey called off the dogs early. Point guard Samantha Ellis ran an efficient offense and finished the night with six points, six assists and no turnovers in
the victory. Even with the lopsided win, it was a special celebration for Gilbert, the team’s only senior. At halftime, Hannah, her parents and grandparents were recognized. Bailey said Gilbert has been a reliable and steadfast part of the Saints squad since it was formed. “She has been a great help to her team by being an example —going to summer basketball camps and off season training to improve her game,” Bailey said. “She is a leader in team meetings and practice.” Gilbert’s final hurrah as a Saint almost came to an abrupt end with an early season ankle injury, but she fought through it and returned to the lineup. “We will miss Hannah on the team and in our school in the coming years,” Bailey said. Although Gilbert isn’t sure about her future basketball endeavors, she has a clear focus
on a career path. She wants to be a physical therapist and has applied to Liberty University, James Madison and Virginia Tech. She expects to hear from those schools in March. Hannah’s father, Rick Gilbert, also serves as the team’s assistant coach. “She’s a great basketball player, but more importantly, she’s a great person,” he said. “She’s never met a stranger and everyone that knows Hannah, loves Hannah. We are honored to be her parents.” Gilbert keeps it all in perspective. “I like being on a team where it’s not all about winning,” she said. “It’s about doing your best and God is the main center. It’s meant a lot to me.” She plans on focusing full time on her career once she chooses a college. “My plan is not to play in college. I’ll probably play intramurals and stuff like that because I love being
active.” The Saints will finish the regular season this week and enter the Virginia Commonwealth Athletic Association (VCAA) tournament at Victory Christian as the third seed. Other action at Rockville Community Center included a boy’s middle school game in which the Eagles defeated the Saints 35-32 in a close match up. Salem’s junior varsity boys defeated James River 42-32. “This was a great event tonight, and I’m glad we had such a good turnout, from both schools,” Bailey said. On Monday Barth had 24 points and 12 rebounds and Gilbert had nine rebounds and eight points to lead Salem Christian to their first win over Central Virginia Home School 42-41 on Monday night. “It’s like Randolph-Macon beating Notre Dame,” Bailey

said. The Saints were down starter Courtney Richardson, who sprained an ankle on Saturday. Central Virginia had a chance near the end of regulation, but the shot rimmed out and the resulting ball scramble
saw time expire. “The effort was tremendous, the crowd was great,” Bailey said. “It was an extraordinary experience.” Additional information provided by Media General News Services.
Goochland boys slip as tournament draws near By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent
Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the Goochland Bulldogs will play their first game of the James River District Tournament Feb. 13 on the road. The team is currently in fifth place and three district losses last week didn’t improve their post-season chances. The Bulldogs traveled to Randolph Henry to take on the Statesmen early in the week and put in a lack luster performance, according to coach Preston Gordon. “I don’t know if it was the bus ride or what, but we came out flat and just never found a rhythm,” Gordon said. “The effort was not very good, to say the least.” Wednesday night, the team rebounded and played well against Fluvanna, but came up

short late in the game. “We had good effort against Fluvanna and stayed with them right until the end,” Gordon said. The Bulldogs got off to a fast start against Buckingham at home on Friday but couldn’t
maintain the pace in the second half. GHS jump out to a first quarter lead highlighted by a 9-point opening stanza performance by James Brooks (21 points). “James really took care of
it in the first quarter, but in the second half, they started keying on him,” Gordon said. “I thought he did a great job distributing the ball.” Knights coach Russ Gowin had his team focus on Brooks but they still couldn’t contain the senior guard. “He is a phenomenal player and he really kept them in it tonight,” Gowin said. “He made some acrobatic shots and we knew he is a great player.” The Knights fought back to take the lead, but Evan Smith’s 2-pointer at the first half buzzer put the Bulldogs on top 28-27. “We came out and played awesome tonight,” Gordon said. “Both teams were hot and it went back and forth, but we had a bad second and third quarter.” The Knights opened a 10point lead and took full advantage of charity shots while
the Bulldogs only went to the line twice during the game. Buckingham scored 17 points on free throws in the 11-point victory. Defense, or lack of, also played a part in the Bulldog loss. “We didn’t get the defensive stops when we needed it tonight,” Gordon said. “When we did have the perfect rotation, we were late on the backside help. That’s where we need to get better.” The Bulldogs take on Bluestone this Tuesday and finish the regular season at Amelia on Friday. “I expect our kids to compete and play hard,” Gordon said. “We’re going to go down fighting. I don’t care what the clock says or what the score is, we are going to keep playing hard. Goochland is 8-10 overall
and 5-7 in the district. The top four teams host opening games in the JRD tournament. “We’ve got to start playing better as a team,” Gordon said. To do so it will take a combination of better defense and more players contributing on offense. “We’ve got to play better defense and find someone else who can put the ball in the hole.” BUCKINGHAM (15-2, 9-2 James River) — Ayers 23, Johnson 24, Briley 7, Chambers 0, Woodson 0, Booker 0, Koonce 4, Scott 11, Bartee 10, Boatwright 0. Yellow Jackets ready to build on 2011 finish By Charlie Leffler cleffler@goochlandgazette.com
Randolph-Macon baseball coach Ray Hedrick came into last season with a lot on his mind. He had a brand new stadium to play in and a deep, talented team with tons of potential. But things did not play out as he had planned. The Yellow Jackets struggled early and were erratic. But in true ‘It’s never too late’ fashion, finally began clicking at the end to take the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament title. This season Hedrick hopes to build on the 2011 closing momentum but doing so could be a challenge early. The Yellow Jackets enter 2012 with only 15 returning players and 17 incoming freshmen. There’s no question as to which Yellow Jacket will draw the most attention from opponents early in the season. Last year a change in the bat rule combined with the continued development of first baseman Jordan Walton to create the perfect storm on the baseball field. The Lee-Davis product shattered the single season NCAA doubles record (27) with 31, broke the ODAC single season hit record (77) with a nationleading 84, drove in an ODAC best 57 runs and ranked 13th in the country with a .452 batting average. All of which added up to First Team All-American honors. Walton comes into his senior season as the first Yellow Jacket baseball player to ever earn preseason All-American recognition. “He does things the right way,” Hedrick said. “He works hard in the off season and all of his rewards are just rewards because he puts in the time and his attitude, effort and approach are phenomenal.” Somewhat overshadowed by Walton’s accomplishments
File photos by Charlie Leffler
Goochland products Kevin Carroll, left, and Brian Jordan, above, should play a big part in the success of the Randolph, senior outfielder Brian Jordan significant contributions at the Macon baseball team this season.
also had an outstanding season at the plate as the team’s second leading hitter. The Goochland product batted .339, tied Walton with a team high four home runs, had 59 hits and 49 runs scored. Also posting a break-out season was junior outfielder Jeb Weymouth. The Hanover product finished the season as the teams’ third leading hitter, batting .333 with 58 hits and 31 RBI. Hedrick describes the trio as three of the top six hitters in the ODAC. “Those three guys in the top four of the lineup are going to be tough to beat,” he said. However, it among the other six slots in the batting order that Hedrick will have to look for production from relative newcomers. “We’re going to have to rely on some of those young guys to interject and have some success for us to get back to where we were last year,” he said. After Walton, Jordan and Weymouth, R-MC returns only three of its next eight offensive producers from last season. Junior pitcher/infielder Michael Helbig batted .321 with 25 hits and 11 RBI. Junior outfielders Andrew Cheatham and Jake Fletcher are the only other returning players who made
plate last season. Cheatham batted .289 with 13 hits while Fletcher batted .243 with 18 hits and 9 RBI. One player who could have the biggest impact at the plate this season is Jon Witt, a sophomore out of Trinity Episcopal who will most likely see time as a designated hitter. At 6-3, 240 Witt presents an imposing figure when he steps into the box. “Talk about a guerilla bat,” Hedrick said. “He’s got some serious juice in his bat. Even with the new bats, he’s a guy that could be a six to eight home run guy. Just by looking at him is going to be a little bit intimidating in the middle of your lineup. “I’ve really been pleased with him,” Hedrick said. “He’s a big boy. He’s dropped a tremendous amount of weight. He’s gotten himself in good playing shape.” Another player who could have a break-out season is Goochland product Kevin Carroll. Last season as a freshman Carroll saw limited time on the mound, but this year he could end up playing any role but pitcher. “He’s almost like a freak, he’s just got so much athletic ability to do so many things,” Hedrick said. “He could play second, he could play third, he could play short.”
Hedrick believes that Carroll just needs a little more maturity from a control standpoint. “He’s one that I’m really excited about because I think he’s just got so much unlimited potential if he could just learn to be the player that he is,” Hedrick said. When it comes to pitching, R-MC lost two of their best weekday starters Kyle Hicks and Josh Ellwood but return their two top weekenders in Helbig, a junior out of Midlothian and sophomore Jamie Hendrick from L.C. Bird. Helbig finished last season with an 8-2 record and a 3.21 ERA. He was closely followed by Hendrick’s 3.71 ERA and 6-3 record. Senior righty Kevin Soltis should also see more time this season. Last year Soltis made 12 appearances on the mound and finished with a 6.63 ERA. “Having Jamie and Michael back kind of solidifies the starting rotation,” Hedrick said. “Now we’re going to have to count on some young guys to throw some innings in the middle of the week and we’re going to have to count on some young guys to throw some innings on the backend of games.” Among those youngsters are freshman right-handers Brandon Beiler, J.T. Williamson
and Freeman product Glenn McLaughlin. “He’s really, really got a high ceiling on the mound and might see some innings as a starter or a long reliever early in the year,” Hedrick said of McLaughlin. Redshirt freshman Matt Fischgrund underwent surgery last season and Hedrick believes the righty will be able to return to the mound by March. Syd Harvey, Jake Bram and Benedictine product Brooks Snead will be freshmen left-
handers that could contribute this season. Hedrick likes what he’s seen from Snead so far. “He’s got a really good changeup,” Hedrick pointed out but mentioned it will be a pitch Snead will need to rely upon. “That’s what he’s going to have to live on because his fast ball, he’s not going to fool a lot of people.” Other players Hedrick will look to are junior infielder Austin Carpenter and four freshmen, infielder Nate Meiners and pitcher James Overbeek as well as catchers Tim Benjamin and Ryan Dickt. Goochland product Scott Ragland could also be in the mix at third. The Yellow Jackets lead off their season this weekend hosting three games against St. Mary’s, Maryland. R-MC plays a double header on Saturday, noon and 2:30 p.m., then closes out the weekend with an 11 a.m. game on Sunday. In a preseason poll by league coaches, Randolph-Macon finished second with three first place votes. Bridgewater topped the poll with seven first place votes.
Goochland duo shatters records Goochland’s boys finished fifth and its girls placed sixth in the Region B championships, but Coach Elizabeth Ford was pleased with her team’s performance. “Our swimmers have been under the weather a bit,” Ford said. “But they never complained, they just came out and swam the best they could. And most of our swimmers got their best time.” Two of those swimmers, Justin Edwards and Mary Wright, rewrote the region record book in the 500-yard freestyle and 100 breaststroke. Edwards and Wright recorded dominant victories in the 500 free, Edwards by more than 48 seconds and Wright by 25 seconds. Edwards won his 100 breaststroke title by 3.5 seconds while Wright edged George Mason’s Beth Cashin by .12 seconds. Willie Sisk also qualified for state competition with a pair of third-place finishes in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke. However, Sisk and Wright will not take part in the state championships. Wright “swims a lot for NOVA, as well, and she’s had so many events lately that she needed a break,” Ford said. “Willie is attending High Point next season and has to be there Friday.”
