The months-long haggling about the schools budget came to an end last week as the board of supervisors voted to approve just over $23 million for the county school system operating fund. Goochland County Administrator Rebecca Dickson led the supervisors

through a presentation outlining recent changes which made it possible for the county to increase the local transfer to the schools by $425,000. That, along with other changes including increased state revenue, reduced health care premiums, a smaller VRS rate increase and the decision to use a forecast of 100 percent of sales taxes directed to schools resulted in the final number. Attorney John L. Lumpkins Jr. has decided to run for Goochland School Board in District 3.

Goochland attorney John L. Lumpkins Jr. said last week he will run for school board this fall in District 3. Born and raised in Mechanicsville, Lumpkins moved to the county in 2007.

Married with two school age children and a son who recently graduated from Goochland High School, Lumpkins said the quality of the county school system was an important factor in the family’s decision to move to Goochland. “The school system sealed the deal,” he said in an interview last week at his office. “It was just what

our son needed. The facilities and people were impressive.” Lumpkins, 50, who received his law degree from University of Richmond, has a diverse background. A Benedictine graduate, he took a B.S. in accounting from the University of Dayton in 1982 and
