Science sizzles at Byrd E.S. By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com

What’s your brain made out of? Well, basically, it consists of water, salt and fat, according to Richard Carchman, one of 10 presenters who took part in Byrd Elementary School’s Sizzling Science Day last Friday. “We are sophisticated bags of salty water,” Carchman told his audience. Carchman, a retired MCV professor, held forth in the media center as classes rotated between his station on the Brain and Senses and other presenters’ stations, which included Channel 8 meteorologist Paul Milliken, who spoke about the weather, of course, Adeeb Hamzey, who delved into the workings of electricity and Randy Weingart, who brought a selection of rocks into the multi-purpose room for his geology presentation. Other presenters talked to students about animal bones, forestry, pet care and gardening. “We are very electrical

School Board settles on budget reduction figure

It’s a $629,095 reduction, the Goochland County School Board decided last week. Also known as Option A, that’s the figure board members chose to use as the amount schools administration will use in trimming the budget from the original amount approved back in January of $23,696,456. At its regular meeting earlier this month, Goochland Superintendent of Schools Linda Underwood had presented the board with three alternatives, ranging from Option A, now adopted, which includes budgeting 100 percent of projected sales tax revenues plus the $500,000 “holdback” sum. Option B would have adopted a 95 percent sales tax figure, while including the $500,000 figure, while Option C would have used 95 percent sales tax but excluded the $500,000 sum.

At the workshop meeting last week, Underwood forecast bringing a revised budget before the board at its May 10 meeting with a target date for approval of May 25. “We will accept option A,” said Mattox, summing up the mood of the board, which voted for it unanimously. Earlier during the public comment period, John Wright, declared school board candidate in District 5, urged the board to adopt the 100 percent sales tax option, saying that four supervisors had said they expected schools to use that option. In case of a shortfall Wright said he understood it would be met by using money from fund balance. In addition to selecting Option A, the board approved a resolution asking the board of supervisors to “communicate the specific information being requested and provide templates that are acceptable to the Board see School Board > page 3

Mother and son team featured in Virginia Credit Union tv commercial By Forrest Gladstone news@goochlandgazette.com

Grayland Hicks was checking his account balance online when he first saw the advert. The Virginia Credit Union was getting ready to run a new ad campaign, and they were auditioning their members to sing and dance in a commercial spot. Though not initially particularly interested in auditioning himself, Hicks forwarded the link to his mother. “It looked like something she might like to do,” Hicks said, smiling. “She was the one who suggested that we both do it.” “We sorta like singing and dancing, and doing stuff together,” Hicks’ mother, Regina Davis said. “Usually it’s mainly at church, but I got the link and said why not? We’ve never done something like this, let’s go for it.” Davis lives in Manakin-Sabot and her son lives in Ashland. Neither does any sort of perfuming on a regular basis; Davis stressed again that most of their experience comes from church. Nonetheless, the two decided to audition, both choosing “The Star Spangled Banner” from a designated list of songs for their audition. Once there, Hicks said the judges asked to hear more from both of them. “It was funny, because I auditioned first, and so I was waiting for my mom. They asked me to come into the room where she was auditioning and sing with her. They wanted to hear us together.” Davis had already been asked to sing an additional song, and had chosen a familiar church anthem titled “Victory is Mine”. Once Hicks joined her, the two performed “Amazing Grace”, and mother and son realized that the commercial was starting to become something they really wanted to do. “We auditioned for fun,” Davis said. Hicks agreed, but added that “once you spend hours auditioning, and then you have to go home and wait to hear, after a couple weeks you start really wanting to get that call telling you that you’re in.” When they did get the notice that they had been chosen to appear in the commercial, each hesitated before calling the other. Davis laughed, remembering. “I think I called him and asked, ‘have you heard?’ I didn’t want to tell him I was in until

I knew whether he was too!” Davis, Hicks, and 10 other Credit Union members were chosen from over 80 who auditioned. They were notified by e-mail, and a week later found themselves in a studio, recording the original track titled “We Belong Together” that had been written for the commercial. It wasn’t completely unfamiliar territory for Davis, who had recorded some gospel songs with a church group before. “I had been in a recording studio before,” Davis allowed, “but this was very different.” Professional recording was a totally new experience for Hicks, and for the majority of the rest of the group as well. “It was a good group of people, from lots of different places all over Virginia. Everyone kind just worked together and had fun,” Hicks said. Once the track had been recorded, shooting began at Theatre IV in Richmond. The cast was taught choreography to accompany the song, and the memory made Davis laugh. “I don’t know where they found the choreographers, but they were so patient with us. They were wonderful.” Though they were shown clips of their work upon completion of shooting, Davis and Hicks didn’t see the final product until the ad aired at the end of March. They were

e-mailed a link to a YouTube posting of the video, but Hicks said that seeing it on television was a completely different experience. “It’s just very different when you have a show on or the tv is playing in the background and all of a sudden that song comes on and you go, hey, that’s my commercial!” Davis agreed with her son, and added that family and friends have been calling nonstop since the ad first aired. “Everyone calls and says, I just saw you on tv! It’s nice, because everyone is so excited about it.” The Virginia Credit Union has invited the cast of the commercial to a company meeting, and has said if enough people can make it, they are considering having them do a live performance. Both Davis and Hicks are game, but allow that it would be a whole different ballgame from shooting the commercial. “I mean, I don’t know, would they set up a little stage for us in the front or something? It would definitely be a different sort of challenge, but I’ll guess we’ll see what they come up with if it happens,” Hicks said. Asked whether either of them have taken up any other sort of performing since their experience with the commercial, Davis and Hicks both shook their heads. “Just in church,” Davis said, smiling.

Goodwill pulls application By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com

Goodwill Industries has withdrawn its application to build a retail store and donation center in eastern Goochland at the intersection of Mills Road and Broad Street Road (Route 250). Assistant County Administrator Don Charles said the county received a letter from Goodwill April 26 to that effect. Charles said county officials had been prepared to present the application at the May 3 meeting. Residents of Bellview Gardens were relieved. Mills Road provides access to the subdivision. “Our entire neighborhood is taking a big sigh of relief,” said Bellview Gardens’ resident Carolyn Smith. She said that had the application gone forward the residents were ready to mount the same sort of presence that persuaded the planning commis-

sion to vote unanimously against the rezoning request last month. “We were extremely organized and ready to defend ourselves. We had our speakers lined up,” said Smith. Smith said she hoped that Goodwill would build a store somewhere else in the county. Attorney James Theobald, who represented Goodwill during the application process, said Friday that the organization also remained interested in finding a site in the county. “Very much so,” said Theobald, who cited lack of support for the county’s land use plan as the chief reason the application was withdrawn. The withdrawn rezoning application had called for an 11,000 square foot building on a 17,450 square foot parcel with its entrance off Mills Road, which also serves as the sole entrance to the neighborhood of some 35 homes. Theobald said at a neigh-

borhood meeting in February that one truck a day would have come to the store. Seventy five parking spaces for shoppers would have been provided. Goodwill sought a zoning change from R-1 to B-2 for the project. Opposition centered around possible a possible negative impact on property values and public safety issues. Smith said Goodwill sent a brief email to residents of the neighborhood announcing their decision. District 4 supervisor Malvern R. “Rudy” Butler said last week that he was opposed to the project. But some residents had expressed concern the application might have been approved. Smith said the effort to thwart the store had had positive effects. “It has brought this entire neighborhood together,” she said.

In other business, the board approved the 20112012 school calendar and the Special Education Action Plan.

Science continued from > page 1 in nature,” Carchman told a group of fourth and fifth graders, who were fascinated with his display of a section of a real human brain. “The brain uses more energy than any other organ in the body.” Students were particularly interested in hearing from Milliken, considering the recent rash of tornadoes, at least one of which touched down in Goochland. “How many heard the storm come through?” Milliken asked a group and just about everyone raised their hands. Milliken explained the difference between a tornado watch and a tornado warning and made sure the students knew where the best place to take cover is during a tornado warning (a basement or interior section of the home away from windows). He also encouraged the students to convince their parents to buy a weather radio. “Every home should have one,” said Milliken. With a weather radio, an alarm sounds to wake up the family if dangerous weather should approach while the family is asleep. “Go home and tell your parents to buy a weather radio,” he urged. Hamzey talked with the students about the various ways to generate electricity and demonstrated how a nail wrapped in wire and connected to an electrical source generates a magnetic field. Hamzey said he enjoyed working with the students. “It’s always nice to connect with the younger ones,” he said. “It’s a delight when you see the excitement in their faces when they grasp an idea.”

Start the cutting School administration can start their chainsaws, now that the school board has decided on how much money needs to be pruned away from their original budget. As one would expect, the board decided to go with the recommendations of the county administration and work with a 100 percent projected sales tax figure plus inclusion of the $500,000 “hold back” sum. There never was any real reason not to include these amounts, evidently, despite protestations that overspending could lead to legal difficulties and doubts that the $500,000 would be supplied to schools. Should the sales tax revenue falter, the county would make up the difference, which from past years’ history, might only be a percent or two at most. And it was always clear that the county administration intended that the schools receive the $500,000 sum but just wanted to use that tool to encourage schools to provide more detailed information to the supervisors and county administration. With the schools’ resolution passed last week, one can hope that the two boards and administrations are a step closer to better cooperation in the funding of the county’s school system. That’s what it’s all about, witness the program out at Byrd E.S. last Friday. To this observer, although it was clear the students were benefitting, it seemed the presenters were enjoying themselves just as much as they shared their knowledge with the kids. If everyone just keeps this in mind,

that is the welfare of the students involved, it would seem that the excessive wrangling could be minimized in the future.

Keep on writing We’d like to encourage all to keep on writing in to the Gazette with their thoughts on issues affecting the county for our letters to the editor section. With the exception of those who have declared for political office, for obvious reasons, we welcome all expressions of opinion from our readers. And although we prefer a decidedly civil level of discourse, we’ll tolerate a little rough and tumble, although every now and then we may pull out our red pencil and mark through a few lines. Just think of us as a crusty old English teacher, who maybe didn’t have enough coffee one morning when they read your letter, if a few choice words are missing. Of course space requirements are also a factor and as things heat up the closer we get to November, we’ll be trying to fit as many letters as possible into our available space. We think most readers would agree that short, concise letters that drive their point home are the most effective in swaying opinion. So keep your desired targets’ attention span in mind when you write us and hopefully we can get as many opinions in as possible this season.

Jewell Wilson presents Dr. James H. Bowles with an award of appreciation for being one of the founders of the Goochland Recreational Center.

Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com

A community institution that has served Goochland’s citizens for a half century celebrated its history last Friday evening, with a gala event. The Goochland Recreation Center was founded on April 5, 1961, by a group of interested citizens. Three of the visionaries were Dr. James H. Bowles, Charles E. Tucker and Arkell R. Roane. Of the three visionaries, only Dr. Bowles remains and he was presented with a glass star commemorating his 50 years of service to the organization. Bowles served as the center’s first president and now holds the position

of President Emeritus. Mrs. Jane J. Allen-Bowles, wife of Dr. Bowles, said about 200 persons attended the black tie Friday night affair. She gave the assembled crowd an historical overview of the last 50 years of the center, from its humble beginnings to its current state. In August of 1961, the center purchase 23.3 acres of land for the sum of $2,165, Allen-Bowles told the crowd, which included at least three of the county’s supervisors. In 1963 an athletic field, picnic areas and a children’s playground were added. The present building was dedicated on Oct. 29, 1967. In December of 1975 the center became a polling place for the Sandy Hook precinct.

On September 13, 2008 the mortgage was burned! In addition to the history of the center, guest heard remarks from guest speaker Rev. Dr. Joseph Haden Sr. and several musical selections. Board of Supervisors Chairman William Quarles Jr. read the proclamation issued by Goochland County marking the center’s 50 years. The celebration came off smoothly despite last week’s difficult weather, which blew down the tent erected outside. It had to be put back up Friday. “It was a needed facility at the time,” said Quarles. “A good little community center. I hope we can do some expansion.”

Bulldogs back in the hunt with win over Knights BY JIM RIDOLPHI Special Correspondent

Struggling to break out of a logjam in the middle of the Jefferson District, the Goochland Bulldogs captured a big league baseball win against Charlottesville last Friday, evening the team’s district record to 4-4. The 3-2 victory also placed the Bulldogs back in contention for the final playoff spot (4th) in the Jefferson District race with six games remaining in the regular season. “If we can get some key hits when we need it, and play solid defense, we can do well in post season,” GHS coach Wes Farkas said. Charlottesville gave the Bulldogs all they could handle, and forced Goochland to perform some final inning heroics to secure the win. The teams traded runs in the second inning, and Goochland

the bottom of the seventh. “We had some runners in scoring position and just couldn’t push them across,” Farkas said. “We had some hits but couldn’t string them together in the right order. We didn’t score when we had to in those innings and that’s something that’ll could hurt us later in the season if we don’t fix it.” Charlottesville’s Haden came up in the top of the seventh facing Bulldog reliever Wes McGuire but went down swinging after scoring both of the Charlottesville runs earlier in the game. In the home half of the inning, Scott Ragland doubled and Johnson lined up the middle scoring Ragland from Photo by Jim Ridolphi second. tonight, and I thought all the guys pitched well,” Farkas said. “We gave them a run in the second but I thought we played well defensively after that.” Charlottesville is still looking for its Jefferson District stride, but coach Richie Williams said he saw positive signs in the Goochland loss. “That was a good high school baseball game. I don’t like to lose but I’m happy with the way my kids played,” he said. “We’re young and at the bottom right now, but we’ve six games by a total of 10 runs.” C’ville.................. 010 100 0 — 2 4 0 Gooch.................. 011 000 1 — 3 8 1 Wright, Scott (5) and Richardson; Goyne, Brookman (5), McGuire (7) and Poff. Goochland tournament gets 3 year commitment BY CHARLIE LEFFLER cleffler@goochlandgazette.com

The Central Virginia golf community gained a substantial measure of support last week when Eagle Construction signed on for a three-year commitment to the LPGA Futures Tour golf tournament at Richmond Country Club. The tournament, will now operate under the name the Eagle Classic and bring 144 professional golfers to the course August 8-14 for the $110,000 event that will also provide money to local charities. “I couldn’t have asked for a better marketing opportunity for my company and a better way to raise money for charities,” said Eagle President Bud Ohly. For RCC golf pro Matthew Schulze, Eagle’s agreement means that the golf course in

Eastern Goochland County will now have a solid foundation and not be left scrambling for commitments on a year to year basis. “Every year, December, January, February, there’s a lot of board meetings and meetings between tournament staff saying, ‘Are we in? Do we think we have enough money to make this work? Do we have enough support from the club, from sponsors, enough people coming back that we can do this?’” he said. “We don’t have to have those meetings anymore. Come September 2011 we can start planning the tournament for 2012.” The extended commitment will also allow Schulze to expand the tournament events. “We can’t go anywhere but up making it feel like a tour event going forward,” he said. “We can

Eagle Construction president Bud Ohly elaborates on his company’s three-year commitment to support golf at RCC.

plan to do some more things and more activities because we know 12 months in advance we’re going to it again.” After acting as a presenting sponsor for last year’s tourna-

ment, Ohly and Eagle wanted to make a return commitment to this year’s event. “I had a lot more fun than I thought I would and I thought I’d have a pretty good time,” he said.

With the economy’s affect on the construction business, Ohly was uncertain whether his company could afford to re-up. “It took me three months,” he said. “Believe me, I went back and forth over that because it is a tough time in the real estate business.” But Ohly wanted to make a commitment toward the future. “You have to plan for better times and this is part of our plan for better times,” he said. “It’s tough but somebody’s got to start somewhere. You’ve got to keep the ball moving or be ready when the ball starts moving. If we act like it’s a bad time all the time it will be. So, we’re doing our part.” Eagle’s impact was immediate. Eagle drummed up nearly $50,000 of additional corporate support within a week of making the commitment

themselves. With a solid foundation to build upon, Chris Osche, the LPGA Director of Tournament Marketing and Sales sees no reason why the Goochland County event cannot transcend to the top of the heap. “There are ‘A’ enough golf fans in Richmond and ‘B’ enough corporations here to support the event,” Osche said. “There’s no reason that this event, this year or in two years time cannot be the best on the tour. There’s nothing holding them back.” Though admittedly somewhat biased towards the event, Suffolk professional Lauren Doughtie feels the RCC tournament is already the best. “It’s definitely one of the best courses we get to play,” she said. “This one feels more welcoming. They’re really glad that we’re here.”

Pressure to win continues despite improvement A new outlook for Dale Earnhardt Jr? BY CHARLIE LEFFLER cleffler@goochlandgazette.com

With four top ten finishes in his first nine races and currently fourth in Sprint Cup points, there is significant evidence that this could be a turn around season for NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. Though he continues to suffer through a 102 race winless streak, spanning

from July 15, 2008, the driver of the #88 Amp Energy Chevy appears to be back on the right track where victory will only be a matter of time. A product of or root cause of Earnhardt’s improved success appears to be a change in demeanor. While many factors could attribute to such a change, one need look no further than the garage to gauge its origins. This season, Crew Chief Steve Letarte made the move to

Earnhardt’s pit box after holding the same position with Jeff Gordon for the past five years. And helping drivers out of losing streak is nothing new to Letarte. After all it was he who crewed Gordon out of his 66 race winless streak, the longest of his career. But according to Hendrick motorsports teammate Jimmie Johnson, Letarte’s means to a cure involves much more than a mechanical approach.

Gymnasts take state titles Submitted by Evelyn Circeo

The River City Youth Fitness (RCYF) Competitive Club gymnastics team traveled throughout Virginia to compete in various state competitions. On March 19, the girls Level 9 gymnastics state competition was held in Leesburg, Virginia. Ashely Mayers took home first place in the 17 year old division to become the All Around State Champion with a score of 34.550 points. Mayers captured first place individual medals on the uneven bars and balance beam while her floor routine earned her a 4th place finish and vault a 5th place finish. Teammate Kelsey Mc Peters took home a 3rd place medal for the uneven bars and placed 6th overall. Meghan Cash placed 6th on vault. All three girls qualified for the Level 9 Regional competition which will be held this weekend in Landover, Maryland. On March 26, RCYF’s Level 7 athletes traveled to Chesapeake for their state competition. Natalie Weber took home first place in the 14 year old division to become the All Around State Champion with a score of 37.900. Weber captured first place individual medals on vault and uneven bars. tine earned her a 2nd place medal and she placed 4th on floor. Teammate Lily Goodwin, placed 6th overall. Not to be outdone by the girls, the RCYF boys team travelled to Williamsburg, Virginia for their state competition. Kiwan Watts brought home the Level 10 State Championship with a 1st place win in all events except the floor where he placed 2nd. Tucker Hamblen brought home the Level 8 State Championship with a 1st place win on all the events except floor where he placed 5th. Teammates Steve Rochelle (Level 10), Will Maynard (Level 6) and Tristen Koch (Level 4) also had fantastic meets with 4th place All Around wins.

Other notable accomplishments include Jonas Longs (Level 6) 4th place finish and Justin Tallyes (Level 5) 2nd place finish on floor, Justin Silvas (Level 5) 3rd place finish on parallel bars, Chris Slater (Level 5) 4th place finish on rings, Adam Flanzenebaum (Level 6) 1st place finish on vault, Erik Engelke (Level 5) 1st place finish on pommel horse and 5th place finish on rings, Conner Engelke (Level 4) 1st place finish on high bar and 4th place finish on rings, Micah Dornbush (level 4) 3rd place finish on vault and 2nd place on high bar and Tristen Koches’ 2nd place finishes on parallel bars and pommel horse.

“I think a big factor in their consistency, in the confidence that I see in Dale Jr. today, is the chemistry between he and Steve,” Johnson said. “This sport is about people. We always say that.” NASCAR legend Kyle Petty agrees. “What Stevies done for him is helped his head a lot,” Petty said. “Even if they don’t get the finish they want, Stevie’s good enough to make him feel good about the finish that he had. So I think he’s more comfortable with what he’s doing on the racetrack. He seems like he’s alleviated some of that pressure to have to win, win, win, win, win.” In Petty’s opinion, Letarte has helped Earnhardt come to terms with his racing situation. “I think it’s allowed Junior to be a lot more honest about where he’s at,” Petty said. “He runs second at Martinsville and he said ‘honestly we had a sixth or seventh place car, Stevie just put us in a place where we could race at the end’. That was honest. He didn’t have a winning race car. But he’s honest enough he can sense that now so I just think he’s in a better place in his head.” Still, Earnhardt’s problems are far from cured. “I am happy to be consistent but we still have another step to go,” he said indicating that outcomes at some tracks could have been better. Without a doubt, no sports figure in history has been faced with the relentless pressure of Dale Earnhardt Jr. With a racing father who was nearly deified by his followers, Junior has been saddled with the ever-growing expectations of the Earnhardt name. “To me, his story is one of the hardest saddest stories in racing,” Petty said. “Let’s just say (if) his name is Jimmie Johnson. There’d be no expectations. He could just go drive a race car and he could do what

NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. is off to a much improved start this season but he may never escape the pressure of his name.

he wanted. But what happens is all those people in the grandstands they point all their hopes and dreams, their expectations, their dreams, where they want to be rides on his shoulders. “I think he feels that now where 10 years ago he didn’t feel it,” Petty added. “I think all of the stuff he went through with Teresa (Earnhardt) and all that stuff that kind of hurt his feelings as much as anything. He’s a shy guy and a fairly sensitive guy too, he can’t just slough things off like that.” Many people believe if anyone knows what it is like to walk in Junior’s shoes it would be Petty, the son of the King of NASCAR, but Kyle says that is not so. “I don’t understand him,” he said. “We’re both the same from the aspect that both our fathers were great race car drivers.” Beyond that, Petty said there is little comparison as far as pressure. “The times, media wise and public wise are so different,” he said. “When I started there were like 30,000 coming

to Richmond and 15,000 to a place like North Wilkes-Barre. “I think the media pressure and the hype of where he’s at is totally different,” Petty added. “He and I have talked a lot during the years about a lot of stuff but I told him, I can’t fathom what you go through. On my level there wasn’t anything near that. “That’s why I say if his name was Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon he would be a lot better race car driver,” Petty said. “I believe that. He’s a good race car driver, but the other stuff makes him not a good race car driver.” Though Earnhardt has shown consistency and improvement this year, the question remains whether the added pressure will forge a diamond or eventually break him. “I don’t have time to be worried about anything else other than just trying to keep it going,” he said. “So, it’s a lot of pressure to try and keep going and try to keep up the expectations that everybody has for you.”

Coffeehouse concludes season Contributed Report On Saturday, May 14, the Shady Grove Coffeehouse concludes its 10th season with a concert by legendary folk musician David Mallett and Richmond favorite George Turman. As Sing Out magazine has said of David Mallett, “songwriting doesn’t get much better than this, and performing doesn’t get much more honest. His songs are filled with passion, evocative imagery, and

a sense of the inevitable passage of time. Hailed along with Andrew Wyeth, E.B. White, Stephen King, Edna St. Vincent Millay, and others, as one of the most significant “Mainers of the twentieth century, he is also one of America’s foremost singer-songwriters. George has been among Richmond’s premier musical performers for over thirty years. He is perhaps best known for his work with “Among Friends.
