Grubbs waives hearing

Former county treasurer Brenda Grubbs appeared in Goochland General District Court Monday and waived her right to a preliminary hearing.

Her case will now go to the grand jury, said Special Prosecutor Jeffrey W. Haislip, Fluvanna County Commonwealth’s Attorney.

Grubbs is scheduled to appear for arraignment in Goochland Circuit Court June 14, when a trial date could be set on indictments brought by the grand jury.

Grubbs was arrested Feb. 2 and charged with embezzlement when she attempted to cash a $14,000 check in her name at the Goochland Wachovia.

Grubbs admitted cashing checks in the amount of $135,000 and wiring money overseas when arrested by Goochland Sheriff James Agnew.

She resigned her office Feb. 11 after the board of supervisors asked Gov. Bob McDonnell to initiate ouster proceedings.

She is free on $20,000 bond.

Interim Treasurer Pam Johnson has been appointed to fill Grubbs’ term until the November elections.

Goochland Schools pick Darlene Martin as Teacher of the Year

When kindergarten teacher Darlene Martin started teaching at Randolph Elementary School 32 years ago, one of her colleagues was Dianna Gordon.

Last week, RES principal Gordon saw Martin named as this year’s Goochland Teacher of the Year.

Five teachers, one from each of the county’s schools, were brought to the front of the room at the regular school board meeting to be recognized. The five then waited for the announcement of who would be this year’s Goochland Teacher of the Year.

“I had no idea,” said Martin of the idea that she would be chosen. “I was in the

company of some top notch teachers.”

The other four Goochland Teachers of the Year standing with her were Jodi Chewning, GES, Diane O’Connell, GMS, Julia Harper, BES and Carol Washburn, GHS. Each teacher of the year received a check from the Goochland Education Foundation presented by Elizabeth Nelson-Lyda.

Martin said the selection process gave her an opportunity to evaluate her career and decide what she wants to do next.

“It was good to look back on my career,” said Martin as she described the application process, which involved writing three essays: one on her philosophy of education, one on community involvement and one on current educational trends.

Martin said she wants to keep on teaching and get involved in more volunteer opportunities. And she wants to work with middle school students in some capacity.

“I’m very fortunate to love my profession,” she said. “I love it more than I can express.”

Later in the week tributes to Martin were up on the RES web site for all to read, posted by Sue Vaughan, RES Media Specialist.

“I had no idea she was doing it,” said Martin. “It just broke my heart it was so kind.”

Martin now goes on to compete with other school division teachers of the year for the state Teacher of the Year award.

Candidates declare for new Senate district

Goochlanders will have new representation in the Virginia Senate next year, after redistricting put the county in the newly created 22nd district.

With no incumbent in the new district, three candidates for the Republican nomination have already declared and more are on the way, said Goochland Republican Committee Chairman Ben Slone.

First to declare was Bryan Rhode, a Goochland resident and prosecutor with the Richmond Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office. Rhode, 36, is a former Marine Corps Captain and a graduate of Pennsylvania State University, the London School of Economics and the University

of Virginia School of Law. He currently serves as 4th District Chairman of the Goochland Republican Committee. He is a member of the Goochland Rotary Club, the Goochland Chamber of Commerce and St. Mary’s Episcopal Church. “We need true conservative leaders to find real and lasting solutions to the enormous challenges we face,� said Rhode. “I believe in low taxes, reducing the size and scope of government and protecting the values we all hold dear.�

Louisa Commonwealth’s Attorney Tom Garrett has also announced that he will seek the GOP nomination. Elected in 2007, he challenged and defeated a two-term incumbent for the post, winning by a 17 percent margin.

Garrett was a Captain in the U.S. Army and is a graduate of the University of

Richmond and Richmond’s T.C. Williams School of Law. Garrett described himself as “a Cuccinelli conservative.

We need real conservatives in the mold of Ken Cuccinelli and Bob McDonnell,� he said.

Garrett cited his work to crackdown on child sex predators, where his office has secured “record-setting sentences,� he said.

Also in the running is Brian Bates, a Longwood University professor who serves on the Buckingham County Board of Supervisors.

Slone said at least two other candidates are expected to seek the GOP nomination for the 22nd district seat.

An organizational meeting of the Republican committee chairmen for the new district was scheduled for May 14 in Farmville.

Goochland student goes for world record in champagne cork spitting

Most folks probably don’t have a clue (I sure don’t) how far they can spit a champagne cork but James Connor does.

Twenty seven feet and one-half inch to be exact, which by the way, if accepted by the Guinness World Record folks, will make Connor the new world record holder in Champagne Cork Spitting.

The current official record is 22 feet, held by Ashrita Furman, set Jan. 29, 2010 on Anakena Beach, Easter Island, Chile, according to the Guinness World Records web site.

Connor, 19, is a freshman at Clemson University. The idea to set a world record germinated during an enforced period of idleness when he broke his ankle in January left him at loose ends.

“I had nothing to do,” he said. Just killing time he and a buddy started reading the Guinness book and looking at You Tube.

They considered trying the longest handshake – now at 33 hours but gave up that idea.

Connor finally settled on Farthest Champagne cork spitting and set up his attempt at Goochland High School last Tuesday. He enlisted GHS track coach Henry Jones and yours truly as official observers.

At the appointed time Connor arrived with a small entourage of friends and supporters to make his record breaking attempt. He was pretty confident while he waited.

“In practice I got 25 feet,” he said.

When all were assembled the group trooped down to the long jump pit, where a piece of red tape was laid over the starting point as a marker.

Guinness’s rules are rather strict. There must be a sand pit (here the long jump pit was ideal), the spitter cannot cross the line even after the cork has landed and measurement is at the first point of impact. No bouncing corks allowed.

With out much warm up, Connor began. His first attempt, measured by Jones and myself, was 22 feet eight inches and subsequent attempts just

got longer.

At 27 feet and one half inch, Connor decided to call it quits.

So how does one train for such an effort? Not very much, according to Connor. I asked had he done any special exercises but he said no.

He attributed his cork spitting prowess to his past athletic training.

“I figure it comes from my running and swimming,” he said, of his lung power.

Connor ran track at GHS, winning the District title in the two mile event his junior year at GHS. He also ran the 800 and 400 meter events.

Now he has to wait for the Guinness folks to evaluate his supporting documents to see if he is the new official Guinness World Record holder for Champagne Cork Spitting. There are forms that must be submitted and statements to be sent.

While waiting, Connor is wasting no time during his summer vacation. By the time this account reaches Gazette readers, he’ll be in Beijing, China to further his language studies. A major in Chinese language and International Trade, Connor will study Chinese at Dalian and then help Chinese students in an English immersion camp for three weeks.

When he comes back, he may be a world record holder.

In GHS athletics, golf, swimming and gymnastics would go by the board, saving $9,890.

Other staff reductions would include a library media specialist at GHS/GMS ($25,000), one clerical position at the Specialty Center (($22,000) and one math specialist, currently vacant ($80,000).

Two furlough days would be retained.

In maintenance, one position would be eliminated through retirement.

An option to increase revenue introduced was $60 fee per student per activity for all extracurricular activities but Underwood said that option was not yet included in the new proposed budget.

In addition to the proposed budget cuts, Underwood outlined a complicated reassignment of a number of positions which moved special education teachers from Special Education grant funding to Operating-Instruction and Project Return, ESL, GIST from Federal Education Jobs Fund to OperationInstruction.

Two psychologists and one nurse would be moved from Operating-Administration to a Special Education Grant and 2.25 Technology staff would go to the Federal Education Jobs Fund.

Special Education drivers to the tune of $92,000 would move from OperatingTransportation to the Special Education Grant.

Four custodians would move from OperatingMaintenance to the Federal Education Jobs Fund.

Some previously proposed ideas to save money were not included, such as staggered bus runs, but that could change next year.

“In 2012-2013 we will have to have double bus runs and staggered school days,� said Underwood.

The budget presentation left some with questions.

Announced school board candidate John Wright called the moves into and out of grants “shell games,� and noted there were no reductions in administration. “Trying to follow where the dollars go is quite a task,� said Wright.

Wright also questioned the decision not to reduce the number of school days. “It would seem to me to be an obvious savings in transporta-

tion,� said Wright. “When you look at what was actually cut, not shifted but cut, it was out of instruction,� said Wright.

Michael McDermott chastised the board for continuing to decline the board of supervisors’ offer to use their meeting room, where audio recording facilities and better projection equipment is available.

Earlier in the meeting the board recognized the five teachers of the year (see article on page 2) and presented awards to the principals of each of the three elementary schools.

Cut first, approve later?

Covering the Goochland County School Board is always interesting and often a quite lively experience.

Most often the meetings start off with recognitions of students, teachers or schools for noteworthy accomplishments. Last week’s meeting was no different, with each elementary school garnering awards and the county’s five teachers of the year being named, from whom Darlene Martin was named the county’s Teacher of the Year.

Frequently students will be called forward to receive awards for various achievements and it’s always a pleasure to watch them, some shy, some smiling and proud, and to think back to one’s own school days and the pleasure such awards brought.

The hard part comes later on, when the board gets down to business. And by business these days, we’re talking about the hard task of coming up with a school budget during a difficult period, when the board of supervisors has provided less money than the school board requested and allocated the money to categories in different amounts than schools had designated.

Last week Superintendent Linda Underwood made yet another attempt to square the budget with the realities the system faces, announcing proposed reductions to achieve the $629,000 decrease needed.

Several of those recommendations involved the elimination of teaching positions, always a painful decision and even more so after reductions in force last year.

Nevertheless, the board was presented with a plan for their consideration,

even though the changes outlined in the budget presentation, presented in a rapid fire fashion, seemed to thwart the intentions of the supervisors, who had added money to instruction and subtracted dollars from administration. When all was said and done, the only positions selected for elimination seemed to be in instruction.

Since the board’s schedule calls for them to vote on a final revised budget at their workshop meeting May 24, imagine our surprise here at the Gazette when we began hearing that individuals in some of those positions slated for elimination in this proposal had received letters of termination two days after the meeting.

We’re left wondering how this can occur before the proposed budget has been approved by the board.

If there is some process by which jobs can be done away with before the school board approves the budget that authorizes these cuts, we’d like to know about it. We’re not lawyers here, nor are we professional school administrators, but it simply defies commonsense to send individuals letters of termination before the budget is approved. Suppose there was an insurrection by the board and the proposed budget was rejected and a new approach demanded, as is the right of the board? What then for the folks who got the termination letters?

Suffice it to say, this budget presentation and the unseemly haste to implement teacher cuts before budget approval has left many questioning the judgment of both the board and the superintendent.

aching last night due to morning emails from my former colleagues and word on the street. Apparently, several outstanding teachers and programs received news they were being cut. I just couldn’t believe it! I know the quality that exists for our county students!

I’ve been online this morning trying to find the “hit� list. I started with recent School Board Meeting minutes. I have never met Mrs. Christie, but, I applaud her research and suggestions (i.e. not filling vacancies at CO) to save money to keep our current teachers and programs. I read the Mission Statement on the GCPS website.

The posted Mission Statement read as follows: Our efforts will focus on meeting the intellectual, personal, social, and career preparation needs of all students.

I submitted the following suggestion to the call for public input: I agree with the statement “meeting the intellectual, personal, social, and career preparation needs of all students�.

The key word is ‘all’. As a professional educator, I know ALL students do not learn in the same way. You have visual, auditory and haptic (handson) learners. That is why the

I will write to my Board of Supervisors and the School Board members, but, I also would like to see the latest list of cuts.

I am greatly disturbed. In the 18 years I taught in the GCPS, we made tremendous strides. Before that, I taught in Chesterfield Co. I would put our schools right up there with the best! Now, I am so upset. For years, it has seemed a game of asking and giving between the two boards. Who is suffering?

Our children! They are our future! As a tax payer, I am not pleased.

In a recent editorial, you stated, “School administration can start their chainsaws, now that the school board has decided on how much money needs to be pruned away from their original budget.” While our children’s’ drama programs have much company as Underwood’s Bunyanesque budgetary buzz saw revs like a banshee, there was certainly no shortage of drama at our May 10th Goochland County Public Schools (GCPS) board meeting. As GCPS “Teachers-of-theYear” were recognized in “Pep Rally” giddiness, I was reminded of the Nazis using orchestras in concentration and extermination camps, and why the life of some musicians was spared and others were not.

Yet again, citizens attending were treated to more dark comedy as those performing seamlessly moved from drama to comedy to tragedy with no costume changes. As with all good theater, actors performing live don’t have the luxury of their foibles, faux-pas and falsifications becoming cutting room floor fodder feeding the celluloid scrap heap.

The board’s longest serving member questioned the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report’s (CAFR) meaning. CAFRs have only been used since the 70’s as the nationwide paradigm for local government accounting. How long did Rip Van Winkle nap, and I don’t remember electing him!

The board’s junior member attempted bringing an agenda information item to a vote. Guess he’s never heard of Robert’s Rules of Order.

During the Second Public Comment Period, a speaker mentioned questioning the finance director prior to the meeting’s start about the GCPS 2011-12 proposed budget, which was presented during the meeting. When the director was quoted as saying, “I’ve never seen it,” Underwood shot him a stare worthy of Star Wars’ Death Star. Remember watching a searing laser blast splitting worlds, while turning planets and populace into orbital ash and debris? This was even better and we didn’t need NetFlix!

Under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) I obtained GCPS 2010 and 2011 credit card statements. One shows a November 2010 $517.70 Shields Tavern (Williamsburg, Virginia) charge. Again using FOIA, the actual receipt shows 12 entrees. At a previous school board meeting, I directly asked, “Who attended this

dinner, and for what purpose?” The School Board has previously and publicly stated they would answer citizen’s questions.

We already know when, where and how much. The question remains, who, and why? The May 10th answer we publicly received was a refusal to name the attendees while adolescently justifying what a wonderful purpose the dinner served. If we are kept in the dark about $517.70, how can we trust these enlisted men posing as officers with ½ of our hard earned Goochland County tax dollars?

Change is coming, but sadly not soon enough to stop this latest round of budgetary genocide. Secrets grow in the dark, and die in the light of exposure. Let the Sunshine in….

group which I had the privilege of knowing during my recent experience; a dog whisperer, an architect, a machinist, a firefighter or two, a single Mom, an attorney, teachers, and my son’s first love, to name a few.

Imagine all of us drawing together through a common interest.

Led by Officers Creasy and Skaggs, the deputies welcomed us to their world through a series of eleven weekly classes, in various venues including the Henrico jail. We dusted for fingerprints, worked radar, and walked (stumbled) through field sobriety tests. The evidence collection workshop was realistic and the acting superb. (Who knew Central Casting had come to our county?)

We met a Bloodhound who, when he wasn’t working, became a clown who reveled in our affection; and an attack dog whose skill and training we admired— warm and fuzzy not an option here.

Even though tornados thwarted our chances to set a building and a car on fire and to see the fire fighters in action, all was not lost.

There was a real robbery in progress just down the road.

The officers made the arrest the following morning and nobody got hurt.

In job-descriptions which involve much pain and adrenaline, it is refreshing to see a wicked sense of humor alongside. I assure you that our people are right on top of this. The gentle ribbing of one another, the “cop” film clips, and the ready laughter offer a necessary balance. The fun is contagious.

I look forward to riding a full shift with one of the officers in a few weeks. It’s see Letters > page 9

Cartoon disturbs reader As I opened the May 12 edition of your paper to the opinion page I was a bit taken aback by Jim McCloskyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s (Staunton News Leader) political cartoon. I understand where the cartoonist is going with his rendering.

But I was disturbed by the assumption that bin Ladenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s death was Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s extraction of vengeance. Who knows?

Religious leaders have had

qualms about calling it â&#x20AC;&#x153;justice servedâ&#x20AC;? by bin Ladenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s death.

If you steal $100 from me, and subsequently it is returned to me by legal process, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s justice. How do you restore 3,000 lives by killing one man?

By the same token how do we know it was Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s will and purpose that killing bin Laden was Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s vengeance? Sounds good--maybe--to our frail and limited human minds. But I am not willing to presume upon knowing what God is up to. Did He orchestrate the origination of the idea, the planning, the execution of this special operation? Or did humans try to make it happen, rather than letting and trusting God for it to happen?

If Mr. McClosky or others can knowingly answer that question with conviction, I will listen intently for God to be speaking.

Same situation, predictable results for Bulldogs

It was a familiar scenario for the Goochland varsity baseball team. On Friday night the Bulldogs out-hit the visiting Louisa Lions but lost a 3-2 Jefferson decision.

“It’s been the same thing all year,” said Goochland head coach Wes Farkas. “We get great pitching and great defense but we just can’t get the hitting.

We’re having no problem getting men on base, but just can’t get the hit with men on and get them across the plate.”

The loss assures the Bulldogs a slot in the bottom half of the district standings, and means they’ll have to win to keep playing in this week’s Jefferson tourney.

The Bulldogs waited until the bottom of the seventh to wake up the bats, but came up one run short with the tying run in scoring position.

“We just can’t seem to put the hits together and score runners,” Farkas said.

A Cody Johnson sacrifice fly ball scored a runner and Jess McLaughlin scored on an error.

Louisa coach Kevin Fisher said his young team played well, but noted the last inning mistakes could have cost them.

“I would have liked for them to make a few more plays in the seventh inning, but Goochland is a good baseball team and fought hard and put the ball in play,” he said.

The Lions put themselves in a position to finish in the top four with a win this week in their final game. “If we win, I think we lock up fourth place,” Fisher said. “If we lose, I just don’t know. It depends on what everybody else does.”

Farkas feels reasonably good regarding the Bulldogs’ chances in the district tournament. “I feel we have a one-two pitching combination that is at the top of the district. That can make a difference in tournament play,” he said. “When those guys are on, they’re tough.”

The formula to advance is a simple redundant message for this year’s team.

“We can’t pitch much better than we are now. The defense is playing solid. We just have to support them with runs.”

Three teams from the tournament will advance to regional play next week.

Cougars fell Saints in LIS Championship showdown

The accommodating weather and pristine fields of St. Catherine’s Goochland athletic facility provided a peaceful venue for the League of Independent Schools girls soccer championship last Thursday. However, the intensity of play was in direct contrast as Collegiate handed the Saints their first loss of the season and claimed the LIS title by out dueling St. Catherine’s 5-4 on tie-break penalty kicks after two scoreless extra periods.

Twice during the regular season, the Cougars had been disappointed, losing to the Saints both at home and at St. Catherine’s by only one point.

But, the match turned those

losses into sweet victory that could be summed up in the words of their 19-year veteran Collegiate Coach Bill Rider following the win. “Now we know we can do anything; we can come back.”

The game itself was typically aggressive between the two teams, but having lost four of their top players to injury, the Cougars had an uphill climb to gain any advantage they could in the match.

“We were playing against a rock-solid team that is very dangerous,” Rider said. “They had the better play in the first half.”

From a stats standpoint, St. Catherine’s had the advantage coming up with almost double the number of shots on goal as their opponent. Saints Emma Ruffin, Morgan Powell,

Amanda Kim and Kristian Hill all had occasion to shoot on goal; but Collegiate’s junior keeper Gianna Tondini was on her game and in the right place to rebuff the repeated attempts at scoring, shutting them out for the entire first period.

With three minutes remaining in the first, Collegiate got on the board with a header from senior forward Blair Munford coming off a pass from sophomore middie Jennie Sroba.

Sroba, who was often double-teamed and shorter in stature than many of her teammates, contributed aggressiveness, speed and ball-handling skills, making her a force to be reckoned with.

Saints edge Cougars in LIS softball final Both teams head to state tourney

No one leaves early when St. Catherine’s and Collegiate meet on the softball diamond, especially if a tournament championship is on the line.

It’s familiar territory for both squads, and last week’s LIS final at Collegiate’s Robbins Campus didn’t disappoint.

Junior pitcher Molly Phillips led the Saints to a 4-1 victory in the championship game. Phillips coupled a stellar one-hit, eight-strikeout pitching performance with two hits at the plate, including a double and an RBI. The Cougars pushed across a run in the bottom of the second inning to start the scoring when pitcher Katie McCauley singled in Gabby Galozin, but the lead didn’t last.

Soccer continued from >page 11 with a goal four minutes into the second period when sophomore Emily Vaeth touched a right-side cross-kick from senior teammate Anne Peyton Leitch into the left corner.

Collegiate did not wait long to get the upper hand again when Sroba redirected a crossfield penalty kick from deep right with a hard shot into the left corner.

St. Catherine’s Kim and Ruffin, working in tandem, tried on several occasions to reply, but were unsuccessful, and with the clock ticking away it looked like Collegiate would take the title in regulation.

But with seconds left, Kim

The Saints scored two more in the seventh inning, and Phillips closed the door in the bottom of the inning.

It was sweet redemption for a team that lost the two regular season meetings to the Cougars.

“You always know this is going to be a close game, but we did have some extra motivation today,” said Saints coach Tara Digiacomo. “Molly came out and hit her spots and that’s what we needed, and our batters got some key hits.”

The title is also nice coming on the tails of a disappointing season last year.

Although Vaeth had a shot on goal in the first of the two scoreless five-minute additional periods, she was not able to convert. The match then came to a show down between kickers and goalies in the PK round of five kicks each.

Alternating between St. Catherine’s and Collegiate, each kicker lined up one after the other for their penalty kick against the opposing goalie.

After three rounds, all the kickers had made good, including Tondini who was the Cougars’ third kicker.

The game changer came when Tondini went back into the goal to defend a right corner kick from Leitch. The ball came off Leitch’s foot with less authority than expected and Tondini came up with the ball opening the door for a Collegiate win.

Cougar senior Carrie Shadowen then put a shot into the right corner to give her team the advantage.

side and the game hung on the very last kick of the show down round.

Cougar Ellie Sullivan slipped a shot past Saints’ keeper Jane McGehee to send the Collegiate fans into a frenzy.

“We’re fortunate we won; but I think anybody who wins this game feels a bit fortunate,” Rider said. “And it’s all for the agents, for the fans, and the kids. We’re happy to have fought, and clawed, and to have won this one.”

Both teams advanced to the VISAA state championships.

he said. “We tried to manufacture some runs and be aggressive, but they made the plays today and got the timely hits. I thought we made some plays and Katie pitched well also, and it was great being part of this championship game.”

Both teams advance to VISAA state tournaments, but will need to gain victories on the road to advance. The Saints will take on Bishop O’Connell and the Cougars draw powerhouse Liberty Christian in Lynchburg.

“They are a very good team,” Turner said regarding LCA. “The thing I love about our team is that I feel we have a group of girls who can step on the field with anybody. As a coach, you can’t ask for more than that.”

Capital Region Exchange members get the grand tour of Goochland County

Goochland County Administrator Rebecca T. Dickson proudly showed off the beauty of her county in a tour May 9 along scenic state Route 6 from Tuckahoe Plantation west to Rassawek Vineyard as part of the Capital Region Exchange, an event initiated by the Greater Richmond Chamber to showcase outlying counties.

The Goochland County Chamber of Commerce (GCCC) and Goochland County volunteered to kick-off this new initiative.

County and civic leaders last week welcomed the group in an exchange of ideas and discussion about the challenges and opportunities as Goochland embarks on an effort to develop an economic development strategic plan.

“We are here and we have some great things,” said Dickson. “Typically people focus in Henrico, Hanover, Chesterfield (counties) and the city, and for Goochland, Powhatan, New Kent and Charles City (counties) to be considered part of the region, I think it is a good thing so we can start talking as a group about really what’s going to work for the region.”

The more than 40 visitors riding on two buses got a taste of Goochland. They learned about the historic

courthouse, built in 1826, the economic value of West Creek, and the desire to make Courthouse Village more of a village. They sampled meats from Nadolski’s Butcher Shop and wine at Rassawek.

Kim Scheeler, the chamber’s president and CEO, said the trip offered an opportunity to learn about Goochland and the challenges it faces.

“It is all part of getting the region to work together,” he said, noting the chamber — which in the past generally represented Hanover, Henrico, Chesterfield and the city of Richmond — last year expanded to include the counties outside the immediate Richmond area. The group will visit New Kent, Charles City and Powhatan in the coming months.

Goochland, they learned, is blessed with 40 miles of James River frontage, but a railroad that runs along it presents challenges for economic development and public access.

As the county looks at economic development opportunities, it sees West Creek, the home of Carmax, Capital One and the Virginia Farm Bureau, as a good asset and an area with opportunity for expansion and improvement.

“One of the challenges is balancing the economic development with the rural character of the county,” Dickson said.

She said she hopes the visit will “lead to us being considered as being part of the overall region.

Westview on the James plans festival Contributed Report

Westview on the James, United Methodist Camp and Retreat Center located on 800 acres besides the James River, announced today that it will be hosting a 5K Race and Music Festival on June 4th, 2011.

The event, which will include musical guests like A Good Natured Riot and The River City Band, was developed in an effort to raise money for Westview’s Annual Fund.

Westview on the James serves over 1,400 children each summer.

According to John Edwards, Camp Director, “Every dollar donated helps enrich the quality of the Westview experience and brings us closer to reaching our mission of helping children and youth affirm, grow, and live in their faith daily.”

In addition to the 5k and Music Fest, White Hawk Music Café will be selling food for the event. “It has always been our goal to reconnect our community with our rich musical heritage, amazing history, and the vast beauty of our land,” said Terry Hazelton, Owner of White Hawk and musician himself. The Westview 5k and Music Fest will be held on June 4th. The race will begin at 10am and music will be rocking the Shalom Farm at Westview between 11am and 7:30pm. Those who are interested in taking part in a music jam can also bring their instruments down to the River Shelter to play between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.

The Cost of the race is $15 and the cost of the music Fest is $15, or you can do both for $20. (Music festival tickets will also be available at the door for $20 on the day of the event.) Lawn chairs, blankets, and small coolers will be permitted. Alcohol anywhere on Westview is prohibited.

Echo Lake family steps up to help colleague, friend

By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer When there’s a good cause at stake, even the weather can’t dampen enthusiasm.

Amid gloomy skies and a hint of rain, hundreds turned out last weekend at Dominion’s Innsbrook headquarters’ recreation center for a benefit run/walk to benefit someone close to their hearts.

Kirk Williams was injured in a moun-

tain bike accident in 2009 that resulted in a serious spinal cord injury. The accident left him wheelchair bound, but didn’t deter the 24-year old from pursuing a life of independence and excitement.

To support his efforts, members of the Echo Lake Elementary School family sponsored a benefit run, the Dolphin Dash, to assist Williams in his continuing mission of independence. Kirk’s mother, Julie Williams, is the school counselor and Echo Lake, and said the support has been over-

whelming, immediate and life changing for her son.

“It’s amazing. There are no words to describe it. It raises more than spirits. For us as a family, it enables him to be able to continue with those treatments at SCI Recovery Project in Denver, allowing him to get stronger,” she said.

Henrico County Public Schools has once again been named one of the Best Communities for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation’s twelfth annual “Best Communities for Music Education” survey. Henrico is the only school system in the country to hold this distinction for all 12 consecutive years. This year’s roster represents schools and districts in 32 states.

HCPS boasts a growing music curriculum supported by 80 music staff. Nearly half of all secondary students are involved in some type of elective music program.

Elementary students are required to take music education.

The survey is a nationwide search for communities whose programs exemplify a strong commitment to music education. Established in 1999, BCME recognizes and celebrates schools, their administrators, teachers, board members, parents and students for their support of music education and their efforts to assure access to all students as part of the core curriculum.

“We are thrilled that this distinction highlights the work of our teachers and administrators who support the arts in Henrico County,” said Rick Tinsley, music educational specialist. “Together we are able to provide unbelievable music opportunities to students of HCPS.” Throughout the survey’s 12 years, many districts have reported that making the “Best Communities” list has had a positive effect on their ability to preserve music for their students.

“Never has the evidence been more compelling: there is a direct correlation between music education and success in other areas of a student’s life,” says Mary Luehrsen, executive director of the NAMM Foundation, which sponsors the program. It is therefore crucial to continue funding music and arts education.”

Hundreds of teachers, school and district administrators, school board members, parents and community leaders, representing communities in all 50 states, participated in the Web-based survey. The districts were measured across a variety of program support, curricular and programmatic criteria. Furthermore, the results were measured proportionally, so that communities of different sizes were compared equally.

Participants in the survey answered detailed questions about funding, enrollment, student/teacher ratios, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program, private music lesson participation, and other relevant factors in their communities’ music education programs. The responses were verified with district officials, and the sponsoring organizations reviewed the data.

and endurance. The work has allowed Kirk to continue a life of adventure, pursuing his goals of photography, athletics and living on his own.

“He’s done adaptive skiing, scuba diving and recently zip lined in Costa Rica,” Julie said in between events at the rally. “He’s made amazing progress and has done some amazing things.”

She said the event provides a positive message for the many

kids who participated in the event. “He’s come to their school and talked to them, and they’ve seen the progress he’s made,” she said.

And Kirk is making incredible progress. He recently obtained his drivers license, and made the drive to Virginia alone, with best friend and helper, Bella dog. He thanked everyone for their support that makes it possible for him to continue his recovery.

“I want to say thanks to all of you for coming out, especially the staff and students at Echo Lake.

You guys have been awesome,” Williams said as he addressed the participants. “Thanks for helping me get stronger every day. Bella dog also says thanks,” he added.

Williams, who lives in Boulder with Bella, said the event offers him an opportunity to relay an important message. “This dispels an idea that a lot of people have that people in wheelchairs can’t get out and do things. I’m still mountain biking, skiing and

hand cycling — getting out and doing things.”

Williams has benefited from that amazing outlook on life, something he said arrived shortly after the accident. “I decided I wouldn’t sit around and worry about what could have been. I thought here’s what I’ve got and I’m going to see what I can do with it,” he said.

He’s pursuing a career in photojournalism, and writes a blog at aspokinlife.com.

Echo Lake SCA co sponsor and first grade teacher Kristina Rilee said the community support was a natural reaction for the co-workers who saw their friend and colleague facing enormous challenges. “Julie has been such a wonderful counselor for us, so it was a no brainer to give something back to her since she gives so much to us,” she said. “All of the parents, teachers, staff and students all wanted to do this and have come together to rally around this effort,” she added.

Rilee also said the experience has been positive for the kids who have taken this mission to heart.

“It helps them to understand when life hits you with something hard, you keep on going and persevering,” Rilee said.

The event raises money for Williams continued treatments and therapy, but the rewards flow both ways. “He’s such an example for kids that when life throws you a curve ball, you just keep on going. He gives us as much as we give him with his inspiration,” Rilee said.

Williams said he would continue on his current path, gaining strength and pursuing his goals.

He’ll do that with a watchful eye on current research that is only one step from away from providing the answers that could unlock the mystery of spinal cord injury.

“The research is heading in the right direction. I’m just trying to keep myself in good enough physical condition, so when something comes, I’m the perfect candidate.”

Transportation subject of Henrico 400th anniversary exhibit opening May 29 Contributed Report The history of transportation in Henrico County will be explored in the new exhibit “Moving Henrico Forward: Air, Road, Rail and Water,” at the Virginia Aviation Museum, 5701 Huntsman Road, inside the entrance of Richmond International Airport. The exhibit will open with a free kickoff event from 1-5 p.m.

“Moving Henrico Forward” is part of the county’s yearlong 400th anniversary commemoration.

The exhibit will examine the many means of travel people have used in Henrico over the centuries, from the area’s original Indian footpaths through the establishment of Byrd Airfield in 1928 and the

beginning of public bus service in 1930. Visitors can explore modes of transportation ranging from wagon trails and plank turnpikes to watercraft, electric trolley cars and commercial airlines.

The kickoff event May 29 will feature live musical entertainment, an airplane and antique car show, games, arts and crafts and a family-style cookout. Although there is no charge to attend

the kickoff event, the Virginia Aviation Museum’s standard admission fees will apply for the duration of the exhibit, which runs through Aug. 31 (museum information is available at www. vam.smv.org).

Brookland Middle School seeking votes for Pepsi Refresh Project Contributed Report The Brookland Middle School library seeks votes for the Pepsi Refresh Project, an initiative by Pepsi to award millions of dollars in grants to individuals, businesses and non-profits that promote a new idea that has a positive impact on their com-

munity, state, or the nation.

The Brookland Middle School library submitted an application to receive $25,000 in funding for 30 iPads and 700 eBooks for student usage. Chad Kroll, librarian at Brookland, explained that the iPads will improve students’ interest in reading, integrate innovative technology,

and broadcast stories aloud to students.

To become a finalist and receive funding, the project must receive votes on the Pepsi Refresh Project web site: http:// www.refresheverything.com/ brooklandlibraryipads.

The public is encouraged to vote once per day.

Folkways... Artists of Virginia opens at The Center Contributed Report Forged candle holders and lamps, a custom-made mandolin, a custom-built fiddle, a handcrafted guitar, plus three traditional style quilts spanning 100 years are among the many traditional arts that will be on display in the upcoming exhibition: Folkwaysâ&#x20AC;Ś Master Artists of Virginia in the Gumenick Family Gallery at The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen. The exhibition opened on Thursday, May 12 and continues through Sunday, July 10. An opening reception will be held on May 12 from 7-9 p.m.

This exhibition celebrates the traditional talents of people throughout the Commonwealth.

From the mountains of western Virginia to the eastern shore, works of art abound. This exhibition features works by blacksmith artisan Mike Tanner from Amelia, duck decoys crafted by Grayson Chesser from Jenkins Bridge, on the eastern

shore of Virginia, white oak baskets

by Clyde Jenkins from Luray, three quilts dating from 1880, 1940 and 1980 on loan from the Virginia Quilt Museum in Harrisonburg and a custom made fiddle and mandolin by Randall Eller from Chilhowie.

In addition, the exhibition will feature guitar #7 by renowned guitar maker Wayne Henderson from a tiny hamlet in southwest Virginia. This guitar was made in 1968 and was carved using only a pocket knife. He says it is well worn and even has a bullet hole in it. (Probably from the time period that it was owned by a moonshiner!) Wayne says an â&#x20AC;&#x153;old buddyâ&#x20AC;? brought a moonshiner by his shop who wanted to see one of the Henderson guitars. Wayne had never sold a guitar for more than $20 and a guitar case. He did not want to sell this particular guitar, so when the moonshiner asked the price, Wayne told him $500 to scare him off. The next day the moonshiner returned with five $100 bills.

Years later, Wayne was able to buy the guitar back!

Additional artisans include Elton Williams, steel drum maker, from Portsmouth and Wade Brooks, blacksmith and glass artist from Mathews.

Magi Shapiro, fiber artist and shepherd who lives in Montpelier and owns Magiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Wool Farm will have a display of various forms of wool from her sheep, her exclusive lopi yarn and wet felting works of art.

Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m.-9 p.m. and Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. The gallery is also open during special events and performances held during the evenings and on weekends. Admission to The Center and Gallery is free. For more information call 804-261-ARTS (2787).
