Deputies arrest three men for armed robbery Amy Condra acondra@goochlandgazette.com
Three men were arrested Sunday after stealing cash at gunpoint from a Goochland resident, said Deputy Sheriff Chad W. Hatton. Eric Andre Poindexter Jr., 23, of Louisa, Corey Demetruse Mallory, 23, of Henrico, and Marquis Antoine Thomas, 22, of Mineral, were charged with robbery Sunday afternoon. Poindexter was also charged with the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. The incident occurred Sunday around 2:30 p.m. Deputies responded to a call from the victim, who was on Danieltown Road near Route 6 in Goochland County. Hatton said that the victim had contacted Poindexter, whom he considered an acquaintance, and asked him for a ride into town. Poindexter, accompanied by the other two suspects,

picked up the victim, then pulled out a handgun and fired a shot before ordering the victim out of the car. Once out of the vehicle, Poindexter allegedly fired another shot near the victim’s head and ordered him to empty his pockets. After taking nearly $300 from the victim, the suspects fled the scene Hatton says that the victim called the Goochland Sheriff’s office about five minutes after the incident happened. He said that deputies located the car shortly thereafter and detained the suspects for questioning. The handgun was recovered from the shoulder of the 3800 block of Route 6 and cash was recovered from the suspects. The three suspects were arraigned Monday. Poindexter and Mallory are being held without bond; Thomas has a $15,000 secure bond. Poindexter and Thomas will be back in court June 7, while Mallory will be in court May 24.

Some interviews are different from others. Interviewing Crozier resident Frank Wentzel is such an experience, since he’s so used to interviewing others for the mini-biographies he writes for them. While the interviewer is interviewing him, Wentzel, being the inquisitive man that he is, interviews the interviewer.
It gets confusing at times. Helping folks with their biographies or memoirs is one of his projects – he speaks to local groups about the importance of recording their lives to benefit their children and grandchildren. “I sit down with people and talk with them about their life story,” he said. “I give out a list of 52 questions designed to jog memories, always a great help.” Wentzel said he was inspired to help others with recording their stories after reading “Legacy – A Step By Step Guide to Writing Personal History,” by Linda Spence. Some Gazette readers may remem-
ber Wentzel writing a “Let’s Travel” weekly column a few years back. Those weekly sketches related events he and his wife Linda had traveling by car to the West Coast. Now he’s at work on his first attempt at a novel, set in the historic Greenbrier Hotel in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. He’s been working on it for the last three years, lately with an editor in preparation for submitting it to potential publishers. And he’s sent a copy of the draft to the Greenbrier’s historian for review. Wentzel, a self-professed history buff, said he became interested in writing back in the 1970s during a visit to Tangier Island. “I made up a story about pirates and treasure,” he recalled but never made any attempt to publish it. A native Richmonder, Wentzel graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School and the University of Richmond. Wentzel said he and his wife Linda have stayed at the Greenbrier several times. His novel, under the working title “Intrigue at the Greenbrier,” centers on historical events. According to Wentzel, when the United States entered World War II, the German diplomatic corps was interned at the Greenbrier shortly after Adolph Hitler declared war on the United States, where they remained until returning to Germany in 1942. That’s where Wentzel’s plot begins, hinging around a mysterious canister given to the diplomats by Hitler. The three terrorists return to the Greenbrier to retrieve it with very bad intentions in mind for Washington D.C. What’s in the canister? You’ll have to read the book. Meanwhile Wentzel says he’s ready to speak to any group to help them record their life stories. “Folks can give me a call at 804784-4576,” he said, “and of course there is no charge involved.”

School Board continued from > page 1 budget. Underwood presented the following recommendations at the May 11 School Board meeting. • Cutting one additional elementary classroom teacher position • Closing the elementary gifted center and shifting to a school-based system • Zeroing out the facilities category by removing $65,000 • Reducing transportation costs by $13,000 by modifying bus routes • Cutting $48,000 from operations and maintenance by reducing electricity use Underwood also proposed leaving empty several positions now vacant due to resignations, retirement and leaves of absence. Those positions include the following: • The Director of Elementary Education and Title I – leave of absence • The Human Resources Specialist - retirement • The Research and Information Services position - resignation • Procedural Due Process Specialist – position eliminated Underwood explained that the duties of these positions were essential and would be assigned to other staff. “This budget is as lean as it gets,” said Underwood. “There is no wiggle room left,” she added, warning that uncontrollable factors such as severe weather, fuel cost increases or unexpected building maintenance could further impact budget goals. In the second public comment period several speakers criticized the pro-

posed cuts and the lack of access before the meeting to the PowerPoint presentation, which outlined them. “I hope it gets published quickly,” said Goochland Education Pa re n t s Association (GEPA) secretary Kristin McNaron. “I took copious notes and couldn’t get it all down.” “It has never stopped feeling like there is all kinds of shenanigans going on here,” said John Wright. “And whether there is or not is awfully difficult to tell because information is really difficult to come by and specific information is impossible to come by.” GEPA vice-chair Jane Christie asked the board to vote on the idea of closing the gifted center. “If Dr. Underwood plans to phase out, or eliminate, the center-based gifted program, then we insist that you gentlemen take a public vote on this change of policy. This major change to a core program cannot be allowed to simply slide through under the cover of budget cuts,” she said. Christie criticized the number of teaching positions eliminated compared to the administrative jobs cut. “How is there any parity here?” she asked. Christie also asked if the Director of Elementary Education position had been eliminated, or was being left temporarily vacant. “I would like to see them make some decisions about which positions are really needed,” said McNaron Wednesday. “I think what was notable is that all the administrative cuts were done through attrition.” Underwood said later in the week that because of the uncertainty of future funding she is working on
an interim organizational chart, leaving open the possibility that some of the vacant administrative positions might be eliminated. “We are trying to get our critical functions covered. Everything is on an interim basis,” said Underwood. On the subject of savings achieved by closing the gifted center, Underwood said $83,000 would be saved, although some of that money would have to be shifted to cover costs elsewhere. Devising a curriculum for gifted students in a school-based environment is now underway, said Underwood. “We are working on how to do that, No question it’s going to be differ-
ent,” she said. Underwood expressed resignation in the face of criticism of the new recommendations. “I really have come to believe that whatever information we provide it’s not going to make them happy,” she said. “I have to worry more about the kids than the public’s perception of me.” In other action the board discussed the decadeslong odor problems at Goochland Elementary School and voted to solicit a proposal on the cost of determining what is causing the problem. The School Board will vote on the proposed additional budget cuts at its May 25 workshop meeting.

At the time of the arrest, Goochland Sheriff ’s Office spokesman Chad Hatton said Bonham picked up his wife’s 9 mm pistol and fired one shot at her after a lengthy verbal argument between the two escalated. She was not harmed, the bullet lodging in a wall of the residence of the home in the 5000 block of
Three Chopt Road. Bonham, 60, faces charges of attempted murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, using a firearm in the commission of a felony and firing a weapon in an occupied building. He is being held without bond in the Henrico County Jail.

In the event of an emergency Drive through Goochland, and you’ll venture down roads that wind through a lush green countryside, past grazing horses, shimmering ponds and the kind of farmhouses where, you imagine, you could happily spend a few hours sitting on a porch, sipping iced tea and savoring the silence. Most of us wouldn’t be inclined to spot the dangers that can lurk beneath those idyllic surfaces: A driver that has had one drink too many could easily lose control of a car on one of those windy roads; a horse could toss its rider off and onto a hard, unforgiving ground; canoes can capsize, sending those within down into cold water far from shore. And that farmhouse? Well, plenty of people have fallen down stairs, or choked on a grape or a hunk of cheese, or cut themselves on a saw or a steak knife, all in the the comfort of their own homes. Emergencies are, by their very nature, sudden and severe, and many of us are often caught unprepared when they strike. But not all of us are—there is one group of people who know exactly what to do when a stove catches on fire or an accident victim goes into shock, and those people make up the 16 career professionals and 270 volunteers of Goochland’s Fire and Rescue Department. This week, from May 16 through May 22, is National Emergency Medical Services Week. According to the website of the American College of Emergency Physicians, “National Emergency Medical Services Week brings together local communities and medical personnel to publicize safety and honor the dedication of those who provide the day-to-day lifesaving services of medicine’s ‘front line.’” Here in Goochland those people are willing to drop what they’re doing and rush to a scene that might well end badly; when it ends well, it is most often due to the efforts of those men and women who have volunteered to dedicate themselves to anywhere from 80 to 1200 hours of instruction, becoming EMTS and paramedics. We rely on emergency medical services staff, we count on them being there when an immediate response can mean the difference between life and death. The people who are willing to react calmly and competently at the scene of a car wreck, a heart attack or a gunshot wound, are the very people who should never have to worry about being taken for granted. Interested in the Goochland Fire-Rescue Ride-Along Program, or in volunteering with one of the county’s six fire companies? Visit www. goochlandfire-rescue.org or call 556-5304. - Amy Condra

Wounded in action My son Harrison Hankins was wounded in action on the 15th of May while serving with the Marines in Afghanistan. As is often the case there have been a lot of comments about this incident on Facebook and by word of mouth and I want to assure his friends in the community that he is all right. It was very early in the morning and Harrison was on top of a light armored vehicle getting it ready for the next patrol. A
mortar landed very close by and he was knocked to the ground with shrapnel in his left arm. He was able to get back up on the vehicle and return fire until medics dragged him to a more secure location. His prognosis is good although he may suffer some longterm nerve damage. Harrison will be returning to the United States within two weeks and he will be home in the Goochland area within three weeks. We spoke with him briefly and although he was heavily sedated he is looking forward to any kind of home cooked meal where sand
is not a primary ingredient. He will be eligible for a Purple Heart medal on his return to the marine base in North Carolina. Thanks to all who have expressed concern and our thoughts and prayers go out to those families in this community who have loved ones in harm’s way. As you can imagine this incident could have had a far more tragic ending. Thank you, John Hankins Maidens see Letters > page 8

New for 2010: Proration of personal property taxes Effective January 1, 2010, the Goochland County Code was changed by the Board of Supervisors to permit proration of personal property tax on motor vehicles and trailers and semitrailers. Under the new procedures, motor vehicles and trailers will be taxed for the portion of the year that the personal property is legally located in Goochland County. The legal location, or “situs, of a motor vehicle, trailer or semitrailer is defined as the place where property is normally kept or garaged. The proration of personal property tax applies to motor vehicles, trailers and semitrailers only. This includes automobiles, trucks, motorcycles, motorized recreational vehicles (RV), trailers (including boat trailers) and semitrailers. Mobile homes, boats and boat motors, business equipment and machinery and tools will not be prorated. The personal property tax will be prorated based upon the number of months that the vehicle or trailer is owned by the taxpayer and legally located in Goochland County. Periods of ownership beginning the first through the fifteenth of a month are counted as a whole month when calculating the prorated tax. Periods of ownership beginning the sixteenth through the end of a month are not counted when calculating the prorated tax because the taxable date is the first day of the following month. For example: If you move into Goochland or purchase a vehicle
or trailer on January fifteenth of the tax year, your taxable date is January 1 and you must pay the personal property for the month of January and all following months that you own the vehicle or trailer. If you move to Goochland or purchase a new vehicle on January 16 of the tax year, your taxable date is February 1 and you must pay the personal property tax for February and all following months that you own the vehicle or trailer. If you move out of Goochland or dispose of a vehicle or trailer on or before January 15 of the tax year, you will not pay any personal property tax on that vehicle or trailer for that year. If you move out of Goochland or dispose of a vehicle or trailer on January 16th, you must pay personal property tax on that vehicle or trailer for the one month of January. If you move out of Goochland or sell a motor vehicle or trailer, your personal property tax for that vehicle or trailer will be prorated and you will receive a credit or refund of taxes paid for that portion of the remaining year provided all other taxes and debts due the County are paid. You will be required to show the Goochland Commissioner of the Revenue proof that the vehicle is no longer legally located in Goochland. Remember credits or refunds are NOT permitted taxpayers who move from Goochland to a nonprorating locality in Virginia. If you move to Goochland during the year from out of state, you must pay personal property tax for the months you are in Goochland.
A personal property tax return for motor vehicles and trailers located in Goochland on January 1 of the tax year or for those purchased or entering the County after January 1 of the tax year shall be filed with the commissioner of the revenue on or before September 1 of each year. Taxpayers purchasing vehicles or locating to Goochland after September 1 of each year shall file a return by the 1st day of the next month following location here. There is no late filing penalty, but a 10 percent late payment penalty will be imposed after the due date. Residents can call the Goochland Commissioner of the Revenue’s Office to obtain personal property forms and to receive filing information. The forms should be sent to: Commissioner of the Revenue, PO Box 60, Goochland VA 23063 or brought in person to The Goochland Administration Bldg at 1800 Sandy Hook Road, Goochland VA 23063 Room 230. Taxes on all personal property in Goochland County are billed once a year and are due December 5 Supplemental assessments billed after December 5 will have the due date indicated on the bill. Additional information about personal property assessment and taxes may be obtained by contacting: Assessments: (804) 556-5807 Tax Payments: (804) 556-5806 Article submitted by the Commissioner of the Revenue, Goochland County.

Bulldogs’ path to region playoffs— Just win! Team enters Jefferson District Tourney with clear mission BY JIM RIDOLPHI sports@goochlandgazette.com
I
f this year’s Bulldog baseball team is going to reach regional post season play, there’s only one way left to get there; they’ll have to play their way in. Second place in the Jefferson District seemed to slip away last week as the Bulldogs dropped a pair of games to league leading Louisa and second place contender Fluvanna. Thursday’s loss to the Flucos meant a win over Louisa was the Bulldogs’ last chance for a shot at second place and a slot in the regionals. Goochland also wanted to avenge an earlier one-run loss to the Lions, but the visitors had other plans. Lion ace Gunnar Carroll pitched a complete game jewel that clinched the Jefferson District regular season crown with a 2-1 win. The district matchup started off as a pitcher’s duel, and Kevin Carroll earned the start for the Bulldogs. “He pitched good enough to win,” GHS coach Wes Farkas said after the game. “We just couldn’t get runners across the plate
tonight, and didn’t give him the runs, but he pitched a great game and solidified his position as our number two guy,” he added. Carroll has pitched in relief for the past several weeks, and solid performances on the mound led to Farkas handing him the ball with everything on the line. “We felt like he really showed his stuff out there tonight,” Farkas said. Louisa coach Kevin Fisher agreed. “I’m not sure of the pitcher’s name but he pitched an incredible game for them,” Fisher said. “He really kept us off balance and we just had to find a way to win a game. Gunnar pitched great for us today, but you have to take your cap off to their pitcher.” The visitors pushed across a run in the top of the third when Frank Wilson scored from second base on a bloop fly ball to right that barely escaped the glove of right fielder Ben Swecker. The Lions added to that lead when Dylan Wrarhford blasted a home run over the centerfield wall to give Louisa a 2-0 advantage in the top of the sixth inning. The Bulldogs mounted their most serious threat in the bottom of the sixth after Swecker worked his way on with a walk and scored

when Scott Ragland singled him in for the Bulldogs only run. With runners on base, Gunnar Carroll pitched his way out of the jam, ending the inning with a strikeout of Ben Verlander. “Gunnar really put us on his back tonight and carried us,” Fisher said. “He had a top notch performance. He’s done
that all year long when he’s been on the bump for us,” he added. Fisher’s team completes a sweep of the Bulldogs in regular season play, both victories coming on one run wins for the Lions. Fisher said either one of the victories could have gone the other way. By clinching the Jefferson
District title, Louisa assured itself of a no lower than fourth seed in the regionals. The Bulldogs are in a less precarious position of having to play and win to reach the regionals. “Basically, we just have to win. We’ll host a game here and have to win to get a chance to prove ourselves,” Farkas added.

Joseph’s shutout lifts Benedictine to state championship BY DAVE LAWRENCE Media General News Services
B
enedictine pitcher Zach Joseph did not expect to last more than three innings against St. Christopher’s in the Virginia Independent Schools Division I state championship game, but he surprised himself — and pos-
sibly the Saints — by going the distance to lead the Cadets to a 6-0 victory. The Cadets, seeded No. 5 in the tournament, knocked off the top two seeds to win their second VIS title. St. Christopher’s was seeded No. 2. Benedictine upset top seeded St. Anne’s-Belfield in the semifinals. Joseph held the Saints to
just two hits, striking out nine and walking only two. “I didn’t think I was going to go more [than] two or three innings,” Joseph said. “I was relying on my change-up a lot. I think if that wasn’t working, it would be a different game. I mixed in my curveball some, and if I needed my fastball, I’d throw it.” Saints coach Tony
Szymendera said the game came down to Joseph outpitching St. Christopher’s ace Campbell Henkel, who earlier had earned a strikeout with two runners on to seal the Saints’ 54 storm-delayed semifinal victory over Pope Paul VI. “[Henkel’s] our best guy. We were going to live and die with him today,” Szymendera
said. “Their kid pitched a great game. Henkel pitched great. Their kid pitched better, and I think it comes down to that.” Henkel’s pitching kept the Saints in the game, but in the seventh inning, errors and control issues caught up with the Saints, and Benedictine struck for five runs to nail the coffin on St. Christopher’s championship hopes.
“I think that Campbell battled his heart out. He’s the best player in the state this year,” Benedictine coach Sean Ryan said. Koonce’s heady play wins for Collegiate Saints take girls Last-minute corner kick crown in last event creates Cougars’ decisive goal in VIS title match By Arthur Utley Media General News Services
A
lly Koonce scored a lot of goals off headers last year. A senior and captain for the Collegiate girls soccer team, Koonce couldn’t buy a header goal this season. Until yesterday against Norfolk Academy in the Virginia Independent Schools Division I girls soccer tournament championship game at Ukrop Park. Koonce headed a corner kick from Becky Patton into
the left side of the net to give the second-seeded Cougars a 2-1 victory over the top-seeded Bulldogs. The score came in the last minute of play. The goal stunned the Bulldogs, who had beaten the Cougars during the regular season, and sent the Cougars into a gleeful celebration that really took off following the final whistle. The reward for Koonce’s first header of the season: the biggest Coca-Cola Slurpee she can get from coach Bill Rider. This was the fifth year for the state girls soccer tournament. Collegiate and Norfolk Academy have played in the
final all five years. Yesterday’s victory was Collegiate’s second. The Cougars won in 2008 when Koonce was a sophomore and played in goal for injured keeper Allie Albright. Norfolk Academy’s Holly Beasley scored six minutes into the game. The Cougars hung on and tied the score on a Molly Bisger goal in the second minute of the second half. About two minutes remained when Patton, the Cougars’ leading scorer, took a direct kick from the right side. The ball bounced off the left goal post to Collegiate’s Meredith Donahue, whose rebound shot also bounced off the post, but
the Cougars earned a corner kick out of the flurry. Patton and Koonce talk about where to place corner kicks before each game. They opted for the middle yesterday. “There was no one on me,” Koonce said. “She played a great ball.” Said Patton, “She hung back and ran up. I put it where she wanted it.” Arthur Utley is a staff writer for the Richmond Times Dispatch.

Cougars boys tennis are champs again Collegiate overcomes Cape Henry to capture VISAA tennis crown By Arthur Utley Media General News Services
T
he Collegiate boys tennis team liked winning the Virginia Independent Schools state championship so much that the Cougars did it again. Collegiate, the fifth seed in the tournament, defeated No. 2 seed Cape Henry Collegiate 6-3 yesterday on the courts at Collegiate’s Robins Campus in Goochland. Collegiate eliminated Cape Henry in last year’s semifinals. Four Collegiate starters were gone from that team yesterday, but the returnees, No. 1 Max
Schnur and No. 2 Brady Straus, set the tone for the repeat. The diminutive Straus, a freshman who completed an undefeated season, rolled to a 10-2 victory over Seth White. “I wanted to get it over with, get on the board and give my teammates some confidence,” Straus said. Schnur ended an unbeaten season for Cape Henry’s Tanner Baine with a 10-4 victory. Eric Smith and Mason Smith won the three and four spots for the Dolphins, but Andrew Elliott and Gordon Gunn won the last two spots to give Collegiate a 4-2 edge going into doubles. Seth White and Eric Smith won at No. 2 doubles to close the gap, but Schnur and Straus
earned the clinching point over Baine and Mason Smith. “We were the five seed, and we didn’t feel it was justified. We had something to prove,” Schnur said of the Cougars’ run to the title. The Cougars repeated as Prep League champions then won yesterday after avenging regular-season losses to Norfolk Academy and Potomac School in the state tournament quarterfinals and semifinals. “I never thought we’d have a team as close as last year’s, but this is the closest team I’ve worked with,” Collegiate coach Chris Conquest said. “We’ve come through tragedy [Straus’ father died two weeks before the season began], and we refocused after the Woodberry
Invitational. It was Max and Brady’s team with others stepping up in [different] matches. At the end, everyone stepped up.” Arthur Utley is a staff writer for the Richmond Times Dispatch. The team of Lissie Baker, Laura Kerr, Tiana Douglas, and Taylor Clevinger (60.1 anchor leg) ran 4:07.82 to give the Saints the last 10 of their 116 points, two more than runnerup Collegiate (114). “This feels wonderful,” said Bloor, who has coached for 47 years, the past 20 at St. Catherine’s. “I knew it would be close. The 4x4 team pulled it out, but this was definitely a team effort.” For the Saints, who scored in 13 of the 17 events, Clevinger, the meet’s outstanding runner, also won the 800 (2:18.64) and 1600 (5:21.44), and Kate McDowell and Kerr, both of whom cleared 4-10, went 1-2 in the high jump Collegiate’s Jasmine Turner won the 3,200 in 13:17.26. Fork Union, whose streak of 21 state championships ended a year ago, reclaimed the boys’ title by amassing 155.5 points to finish well ahead of second-place Liberty Christian Academy of Lynchburg (99). Woodberry Forest was third (75), Collegiate fourth (69), and St. Christopher’s fifth (59.5). The St. Christopher’s team of Jamie Ball, James Busch, Aoky Sarhan, and Ben Constable won the 3,200 relay in 8:10.10. Collegiate’s Cabell Willis won the 1,600 in a blazing 4:12.17 and the 3,200 in 9:31.03, and David Allen came from behind on the final straightway en route to a victory in the 800

Goochland pitcher carries a name brand Ben Verlander’s on brother’s path, seeks own identity BY ERIC KOLENICH Media General News Services
N
o matter whom the Goochland pitcher meets, the conversation always goes the same way. After learning his name and pausing to think, everyone asks him, “Are you related to Justin Verlander?” The answer, of course, is yes. Ben Verlander, the younger brother of Detroit Tigers phenom Justin Verlander, is almost famous despite being a regular 12th-grade pitcher who lives in rural Goochland County. “It’s not like a Smith or a Jones,” Goochland coach Wes File photo by Charlie Leffler Farkas said. “Everyone knows Goochland senior pitcher Ben Verlander cannot escape who he is. His name is very beign associated with older brother Justin who plays for recognizable, even when we’re
playing five states away.” Justin has built a name for himself, ever since the Tigers took him second overall in the 2004 amateur draft out of ODU. In 2006, he was named AL rookie of the year. In 2007, he pitched a no-hitter. Most people can’t help drawing the comparison. “I know I’m going to get it everywhere I go,” Ben said. “I get it all the time.” The Q&A process follows a familiar path. First, everyone asks, “What’s it like being the brother of a major-league pitcher?” And because Ben is a pitcher, too, the next question always follows: “Are you better than him?” To answer the first question, Ben says it has its pros and cons. Unlike any of his teammates, Ben has to work to find his own identity separate from his brother, who also attended Goochland.

“My goal is to be my own person,” Ben said. “Of course, I’d like to end up where he is one day.” That struggle won’t end when he graduates, either. Ben will compete at ODU next year, just as his brother did. But Ben has the one thing every amateur athlete wants in the recruiting process name recognition. Getting noticed by scouts isn’t a problem. Plus there’s the ego factor- pitchers who hope to boost their self-esteem by striking out Justin Verlander’s little brother. They muscle up, rear back and throw as hard they can to try to strike him out. But the ball never comes as fast. The second question, however, is more difficult to answer. His accomplishments this season are solid—he is 6-1 with a 1.11 ERA. In his one loss, he didn’t give up an earned run, but Goochland lost 3-2 to Louisa. Ben has 54 strikeouts in 44 innings. And, he’s done it at the Group AA level. Goochland was in Group A when Justin starred for the Bulldogs. But projecting the ability of a pitcher at any level is difficult. Ben is 6-4 and weighs 170 pounds, the same build Justin had in high school. And he throws in the mid-80s, as Justin did. But Justin added weight (he now weighs 225) and velocity in college, hitting 100 mph at ODU. And that’s the kind of speed that makes scouts drool. Whether Ben
Track continued from >page 13
can gain the size and speed he needs is the question on everyone’s mind. “He’s got the tools, he’s got the work ethic, he’s got the things that he needs in place to make himself succeed at the next level,” Farkas said. Unlike his brother, Ben is a two-way player and will continue as one next year. He’s hitting .316 and has struck out only six times in 64 plate appearances this season. Farkas believes Ben’s best chance to play beyond college is as a pitcher, even though becoming a full-time hitter could be a way for Ben to distinguish himself from his brother. “[Justin] likes to give me tips on hitting, even though he can’t hit,” Ben said. Ben appreciates the tips. But the image of Justin that goes everywhere with Ben doesn’t follow him to the mound. There, it’s just him and a batter he’s trying to strike out. “He doesn’t get mad easily,” Farkas said. “He settles and keeps his composure. He’s very calm and cool and his temperament is very good.” And that ability to focus is important. Because maybe the one thing that’s more difficult than getting out of a basesloaded jam is waking up every day knowing he has to live up to high expectations. Come to 204 Dabneys Mill Road, Manquin (a short distance behind 360 Hardware, house on the right) and join us to shop for gently-used treasures for everyone ranging from antiques, furniture, toys, electronics, kitchen items, clothing for adults and children, and much more! And, that’s not all! Delicious homemade baked goodies along with food and drinks for breakfast and lunch will be available for sale. All proceeds will go towards renovations of the church. The United Methodist Women will graciously accept donations of yard sale items.
During your Spring cleaning, decorating, and reorganizing, save those “treasures” you no longer desire and contribute to McKendree’s yard sale. Dates for drop off are as follows: April 24, May 1, May 8, and May 15, (every Saturday before the yard sale). You may drop off your donations on the Saturday dates any time between 102 p.m. or by appointment if necessary (contact Donna Townsend at 769.1366). The location is the same as the yard sale--204 Dabneys Mill Road, Manquin. Your support is greatly appreciated!

Cheerleaders win national competition

Kanawha cheerleaders practice on the beach, above, at the U.S. Finals National Cheerleading Competition, and perform, right, at the Virginia Beach Convention Center during the U.S. Finals National Cheerleading Competition.
By Ken Odor Media General News Service The Kanawha Competition Cheerleading Squad is back from taking part in the U.S. Finals National Cheerleading Competition. All 18 girls on the Kanawha Redskins squad traveled to the meet, held April 30May 1 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center, said coach Melissa Ellyson. More than 600 teams and some 10,000 cheerleaders took part. “It was overwhelming,” said Ellyson, with a huge stage which she said reminded her of the American Idol set.
“We received a paid bid,” said Ellyson, who said the team had won all four of their previous competitions this year. “The routine is two minutes and 30 seconds long,” explained Ellyson, with cheering, dancing tumbling and stunts. They competed in the Small Junior Division, said Ellyson, for girls 10-13 years old with teams of 20 members or less, finishing with a 6th place win and a top 10 national ranking, said Ellyson. The cheerleaders practice at Short Pump Elementary School and cheer for the Kanawha Youth Football teams. Every cheerleader is required to take part in side-
line ch The competition was the culmination of the year’s activities, said Ellyson. The squad has made huge strides since they started with just three experienced girls a few years ago. ‘We started from scratch,” said Ellyson. “They’ve learned a ton – I can’t say too much about them.” Now that the season is over, the girls get to rest up, but not the coach. “The girls are on vacation now,” said Ellyson, who said she was busy ordering new uniforms for next year.

Area residents can learn to build and use a rain barrel at workshops offered by the Henricopolis Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 9 and Thursday, July 29 at the Human Services Building, 8600 Dixon Powers Drive. The SWCD workshops will provide materials and hands-on instruction to help participants construct their barrels, which can help homeowners conserve water by maintaining a supply of fresh water for outdoor use. Built from recycled food-grade plastic, the rain barrels also divert runoff from storm drains, protecting the water quality of the Chesapeake Bay and its watershed. The workshops cost $45, including materials. Pre-registration is required. To register or for more information, contact Henricopolis SWCD at 501-5175. Two Henrico teachers honored Contributed Report Two of Henrico County’s finest educators were named the 2010 Gilman Teacher of the Year and First-Year Teacher of the Year at an awards ceremony recently. Tamsyn Stewart of Dumbarton Elementary School and Jonathan Lauder of Godwin High School were among the 114 teachers honored for their dedication in the classroom. Stewart was named the school division’s 2010 Gilman Teacher of the Year. She teaches English as a Second Language at Dumbarton Elementary School. Four teachers were finalists for the award: Laura Casdorph, Freeman High School; Linda Hill, Wilder Middle School; Elizabeth
Markley W. Kautz-Scanavy, Rivers Edge Elementary School; and Tanika P. McKissick, Elko Middle School. Lauder, the 2010 First-Year Teacher of the Year, teaches history at Godwin High School. Finalists for the award were Jessica Bowden of Highland Springs High School and Sandra Hamilton of Rivers Edge Elementary School. The Henrico Education Foundation supported the event with a $1,000 cash award for the Gilman Teacher of the Year winner and $500 for each of the four finalists. ViLinda Hill, school counselor at Springfield Park Elementary School, received the Christie Award, an annual award that recognizes an outstanding exceptional education teacher.
Gilman Teacher of the Year is an annual event that rewards teachers from across the county for their commitment to education. Teachers are nominated by their schools, and their applications are judged by a panel of administrators and specialists. This group judges applications based on a point system for evidence of professional development, school/community activities in and outside of the classroom, participation in professional organizations, and their professional beliefs essay. Finally, five teachers (one from each magisterial district) are nominated for the Gilman Teacher of the Year honor. All five nominees undergo an interview with the panel, and the winner is declared.
Making you feel beautiful in our our comfortable, relaxed setting.
