Man-to-Man molds young men at GES By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com

About 30 young boys from Goochland Elementary School trooped down to White Hawk Music Café Monday morning for the last meeting this year of the Man-to-Man Club, the innovative program started by departing GES Principal Stacey Austin. Austin said the Man-to-Man Club uses no instructional time, as the boys go straight from the bus to the cafeteria, where they spend their homeroom time talking about the “Word of the Week.” Words like courage, tenacity and

courtesy. Austin or another teacher gives a short talk, and then the boys break up in groups with adult male volunteers to talk. Austin said the program was designed to “meet the needs of boys who needed an extra layer of accountability and love.” It’s open to any young man who needs mentorship, said Austin. “It’s one of my favorite things I’ve ever done,” said Austin.
