Man-to-Man molds young men at GES By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com
About 30 young boys from Goochland Elementary School trooped down to White Hawk Music Café Monday morning for the last meeting this year of the Man-to-Man Club, the innovative program started by departing GES Principal Stacey Austin. Austin said the Man-to-Man Club uses no instructional time, as the boys go straight from the bus to the cafeteria, where they spend their homeroom time talking about the “Word of the Week.” Words like courage, tenacity and
courtesy. Austin or another teacher gives a short talk, and then the boys break up in groups with adult male volunteers to talk. Austin said the program was designed to “meet the needs of boys who needed an extra layer of accountability and love.” It’s open to any young man who needs mentorship, said Austin. “It’s one of my favorite things I’ve ever done,” said Austin. Festival continued from > page 1 “We were very happy with the turnout for a first time event,” said Joe Liesfeld, member of the festival organizing committee, who said the event was more than just another wine festival. ‘We’re trying to show the culture of America,” said Liesfeld. “It’s a wine festival but it’s also a heritage festival.” Michael and Dianne Barr probably would probably have agreed. Sampling the bounty of the grape at Grayhaven Winery’s tent, Michael called the event “A fancy Field Day of the Past.” “The scenery is fantastic,” added Dianne. That scenery included lakes with old steam powered boats offering leisurely rides to visitors, plus the Rosalee Batteau for those interested in an older form of river traffic. Vintage cooking and blacksmithing demonstrations, Plein Air artists, 4H Club Livestock and archery, barnyard animals and a schedule of live music were among the other attractions. As were fishing poles and bait were available for youngsters (and grown-ups too) who wanted to try their luck at angling in one of the several lakes. Two cabins offered sites for exhibits and entertainment. Saylor Cabin, built in 1844, was moved to the property in 2003 from St. Paul’s Church Road in Goochland. The Cherokee Cabin, originally built in 1910, was moved from Cherokee Road in Richmond in 2006. Six wineries offered their wares for tasting: Byrd Cellars, Grayhaven, Saude Creek, Mattaponi, New Kent and First Colony Wineries drew tasters to their tents. Goochland Board of Supervisors Chairman William Quarles served as one of the many volunteers directing

points of interest. There was even a replica still set up at a display by the Virginia ABC board, manned by a special agent, who confirmed that moonshine is still made in the state. Goochland Fire and Rescue

Planning Commission discusses time limits on Conditional Use approvals By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent
A Conditional Use Permit request prompted a lively discussion on time limits associated with the applications at last week’s Planning Commission meeting. Sarah and Claude Wilson requested an extension of their current CUP to operate a horse boarding facility on 27 acres in the southeastern portion of the county. Principal planner Tom Coleman recommended approval of the application for a 10-year period and pointed out the operation has had no complaints from neighbors in its many years of operation. Commissioner Lowe Lunsford questioned why the staff recommended only 10 years, and said he was under the impression longer periods
could be granted for operations that have displayed “a clear record of performance. He said that the 10-year guideline was a reasonable starting point, but said some applications clearly deserve a longer period. District 5 representative Courtney Hyers agreed and said some CUPs could be open ended but suggested the panel seek advice from County Attorney Norman Sales. “If you are looking at making some changes to your historic practice, I suggest that you do so in a deliberate manner, so that it won’t be haphazard and you don’t hopscotch around. I think you are going to open yourself up to some liability if you don’t have some standards for certain type of uses, he said.
“So, what you’re saying is that we shouldn’t be doing this on a case-by-case basis? Hyers asked. Sales said that addressing policy would be the “better approach. The panel recommended approval of the application, and placed a 20-year time limit on the agreement. Eugene Bryce cast the only dissenting vote and said “a lot can change in 20 years. The commission also considered an application for a used car lot in the Centerville area on Broad Street. There are four dealers located on the current site. Jody Crown said her operation is mainly wholesale, and there are usually only four to six vehicles parked on her lot. She also assured the panel that
most of her business is internet based and produces very little traffic or volume at the actual site. The application recommendation was approved unanimously. S. B. Cox requested a CUP to open a concrete production facility on Lanier Lane in the existing business park. Darvin Satterwhite represented the applicant, and said they wanted to move the current location on Broad Street to the Lanier Lane site. The company has operated in Centerville on Broad Street for 15 years, and Satterwhite said ‘the highest and best use of the property on Broad Street is probably not a concrete plant. He said the move would see Planning > page 16

A new program called Rider Alert began last month to help motorcycle riders and the public should an accident occur. Richmond Ambulance Authority (RAA) and Bon Secours Virginia Health System, in partnership with Motorcycle Virginia, Inc., launched the new program designed to save the lives of injured motorcyclists. “It started in the United Kingdom,” said Rob Lawrence, Goochland resident and chief operating officer of RAA. The key component is a Rider Alert Card inside the cyclist’s helmet with an accompanying decal on the outside that reads, “DO NOT REMOVE HELMET.” Together, they both alert first responders that a card with critical information can be found inside the lining of the rider’s helmet and warn bystanders not to try to take a helmet off a fallen rider, which might cause further injury. The inside card lists the name of the rider along with emergency contact information as well as medical information such as allergies, physician names and other important medical information. Lawrence is passionate about safety for motorcyclists.
Man-to-Man continued from > page 1 handed out awards to the three boys with the best essays in the “Gold Coin Prose Contest.” The topic was “What Independence Day Means to Me.” Mason Sims took first, winning a gold coin. Ethan Diggs was first runner up and Reggie Blizzard was third. “I am proud,” said Reggie on receiving his award, a jar of pennies that Wentzel said he hoped the third place winner would turn into a gold coin by winning first place next year. Each winner had his name drawn from a secret envelope
“Seventy five riders die each year in Virginia from motorcycle accidents,” he said in a recent interview, and more than 4,000 die nationwide. “That’s seven and a half jumbo jets full of people,” said Lawrence. “We wouldn’t stand for that.” RAA based the idea of the Rider Alert cards on a program called CRASH Card, which was developed in the United Kingdom two years ago by the Ambulance Motorcycle Club. Since its creation, more than 325,000 CRASH Cards have been distributed to riders in Europe. Lawrence said there are about 100,000 registered motorcycle riders in Virginia. Fifteen thousand cards have already been produced for the state, he said. In addition to giving first responders valuable medical information about the rider, the cards can prompt motorcyclists to think about their riding habits. “It makes the rider think about their own safety,” he said. Deputy EMS Chief Eddie Ferguson said Goochland is a popular area for motorcycle riders. Which can mean accidents. “Lots of motorcyclists like to ride through Goochland,” said Ferguson. “In the last three weeks there have been several motorcycle accidents in the county,” said Ferguson. Lawrence said the cards are free and can be picked up at all fire and rescue stations in Goochland. Other distribution points
by Wentzel, accompanied by a drum roll provided by White Hawk owner Terry Hazelton. Each boy then got a corn dog and, since it was the last meeting of the year, each boy who wanted to got a chance to come to the mike and tell which was his favorite Manto-Man meeting. “The first day was my favorite day,” said one young man. “I got to meet a lot of good friends.” Along with Wentzel and Hazelton, volunteers Brad Jackson, Richard Carchman, Adeeb Hamzey and Dave Duvall sat in the back. the volunteers talked about the program. “The potential is enormous,” said Hamzey. Carchman said the Goochland Rotary Club had recently pledged financial support for next year that would cover the cost of food for programs at all three elementary schools, if sponsors in each school can be found to run them. Austin is leaving for a new job as prinicpal of Robius Elemenentary School in Chesterfield. “I want to make sure the program continues,” said Austin, who said he has seen rewards in improvement in grades and discipline as a result
of Man-to-Man. Austin said the Rotary’s financial and volunteer commitment was crucial, and he promised to write a curriculum for the program for whoever steps forward to lead it next year. As well as benefitting the boys, Austin said he was surprised at how much he and the volunteers got from the program. “I jumped out of bed every Monday morning and got to school early for it,” said Austin, who although he is leaving Goochland, is not ready to give up his Man-to-Man program. “It will be a part of any school I go to,” he said.

All over, including the shouting By the time our readers see this edition in print, the school board budget should be set, after the May 24 workshop meeting. Goochland Superintendent Linda Underwood said Monday that all is not finalized, however, as discussion was being given to retaining golf at Goochland High School. But the five teachers who received Reduction in Force letters May 11, which concerned so many, are still slated to go, although one has resigned for another job. Underwood said that the RIF process allows for the process to go forward before the final approval of the budget and if need be, a RIF letter can be withdrawn if funds should be found or if the School Board should not concur with the recommendations. That is not likely to occur, said the superintendent, since the recommendations for all proposed budget reductions in the package presented May 10 were the result of consultation by the superintendent with the board members and approval is expected. As contracts are also scheduled to be approved at the May 24 workshop meeting, it was necessary to issue the RIF letters before budget approval, the same process as was followed last year, said Underwood.
Elementary Principal Stacey Austin designed to provide mentoring to boys at GES. Austin started the program while at Randolph Elementary School and brought it to GES this year when he was transferred. It’s hard to imagine a more worthwhile activity and actually, with the generous sponsorship of the Goochland Rotary Club, things are looking pretty good provided the new GES principal supports it. According to Rotary member Richard Carchman, the club is providing enough money to fund a Man to Man program at Byrd and Randolph too, if leadership can be found at those schools. Let’s hope it continues at GES and is started back up at RES and comes to BES for the first time – the boys will surely benefit.
That seemed to be the verdict of many who attended the Spring Jubilee at Rassawek over the weekend. With exhibits and historic structures galore spread over a beautiful landscape of rolling hills, ponds and vineyards in western Goochland, visitors had an opportunity to enjoy the produce from six different wineries while enjoying an array of heritage exhibits. quences. At the end of the 19th century, England, the creator of the industrial revolution found itself only as the leader in bicycle manufacturing. They initiated a large technical school program in order to try and reinvigorate new and innovative manufacturing abilities. The reasons for their failure to recapture their manufacturing and technology leadership are in no small way based on the lack of real financial support at all levels, with the First World War pretty much finishing off this effort.

Cougars fall in VISAA title to Bulldog onslaught BY DAVE LAWRENCE Special Correspondent
By stepping on the field Saturday, Meredith Donahue provided the emotional high point of Virginia Independent School’s Division I girls soccer championship game. The senior, a Collegiate team captain who had been unable to play this season because of an injury, took the kickoff and sent the ball out of bounds. Donahue stepped off the field, and without her the second-seeded Cougars settled into a hard-fought slog against long-time rival Norfolk Academy. And a slog it was. The topseeded Bulldogs relentlessly attacked Collegiate’s defense and eventually cracked it, scoring two goals in a three-minute span in the second half to claim a 2-0 victory. Collegiate planned on playing a defensive game. They needed to. The Bulldogs fired 24 shots on goal, compared to just three for the Cougars. “I think you could tell from the shot total that what we were doing was working. We just weren’t finding the back of the net,” said Norfolk Academy head coach Rich Peccie. “I think in the first half that if a couple of those shots had gone in, then maybe we would have taken some of the fire out of them.” Collegiate keeper Gianna Tondini anchored the Cougars’ defense with 16 saves, but with so many shots coming her way, one or two were bound to get past her. The first came in the 48th minute when Riley Tata fed the ball to Holley Beasley, who crashed through the Cougar defense to score. Rachel Shapiro, assisted by Mary Rives Dougherty, scored the Bulldogs’ next goal in the 51st minute.

“It’s a common thing in soccer. Once a goal is scored, you often see one of the teams, if not both of the teams, let down,” Peccie said. “We talked about getting that first goal and pressuring them to try to get that second one. That’s what we were able to do. They had been working so hard defensively, that once we got that goal, there was a collective letdown.” The let-down did not last for long, and, the game settled back into the defensive battle it had been before. Collegiate hung tough. The Bulldogs took the bulk of the shots, but the Cougars kept the ball out of the net. “We knew they weren’t going to give up, they weren’t going to let up,” Peccie said. “They played a more defensive game, and then they tried to beat us in transition. They were hoping they would break through for one.” The Cougars nearly succeeded in breaking through in the sixth minute, but Bulldog keeper Aekta Javia’s diving save kept the game scoreless. “We took a lot of lumps this season, but we didn’t back
down,” said Collegiate coach Bill Rider. “We learned something from every game.” Peccie complimented Collegiate for its ability to play his Bulldogs so tough. “We tried to play the kind of soccer that we’ve been playing all season long,” Peccie said. “They really disrupt us – something about the Norfolk Academy-Collegiate rivalry.” Rider said the Cougars knew from the start they need-

ed to play tough on defense. “We knew that we had to be committed with defense first and then try to counter-punch,” Rider said. “We knew we’d have to be selective, take some punches and wait for opportunities. We weren’t going to beat them in an up-and-down the field track meet.”
Rider said his Cougars would have preferred to win, but it was a good night nonetheless. “All you can do at the end of a game is determine if you really gave it everything you had,” Rider said. “There were smiles coming off that field because I think every one of

Potomac stops Collegiate tennis in VISAA Cougars foiled in bid for third straight title BY ARTHUR UTLEY Media General News Services
Two-time defending champion Collegiate made adjustments in its doubles teams, but Potomac School thwarted the strategy to capture its first Virginia Independent Schools Division I boys tennis title. Potomac defeated Collegiate 6-3 on Saturday at Collegiate’s Robins Campus tennis facility in Goochland County. Potomac led 4-2 at the end of singles play. Max Schnur and
Brady Straus, the Cougars’ top two players, won their matches 10-3 and 10-7, respectively. Potomac won at Nos. 3-6. Needing to sweep the doubles, Collegiate coach Chris Conquest split his No. 1 doubles team, Schur and Straus. “It was tough being down 4-2. Our only chance to win 5-4 was to do that,” Conquest said. Potomac’s No. 3 doubles team of Jack Kingley and Jessie Liu built an 8-2 lead in the 10game proset format and went on to defeat Gordon Gunn and Austin Palmore 10-7 and secure the deciding fifth point.
Collegiate had to shuffle the singles lineup after No. 3 Michael Perel suffered a stress fracture in his back during a nonschool tournament about three weeks ago. Goochland softball takes another step Bulldogs eliminate Western in JD tourney BY JIM RIDOLPHI Special Correspondent
It’s their turn to shine. The Goochland varsity softball squad is carrying the county banner in spring sports this year, and the team took another step forward in the opening round of the Jefferson District Tournament. The Bulldogs defeated Western Albemarle 3-1, to advance to the semifinals of the tournament this Tuesday at Louisa. A win by the Bulldogs would put them in the championship game Thursday in Charlottesville. “I thought we played good defense tonight and only made one error,” said Goochland coach Amy Henneberger. “We moved some runners around when we had to and got them
in scoring position. It was a little closer than I wanted, but we won the game and get to keep playing.” If the Bulldogs defeat the Lions on Tuesday, they advance to regional play despite what happens in the championship game. Goochland has two wins over Louisa in the regular season but tournament play heightens the competitive level. Henneberger is hoping her team can continue to play at their best and do the things that got them this far. “We need to keep playing good defense and hitting the ball,” she said. “I wish we could have scored a few more runs tonight.” Both teams scored in the first inning, but the Bulldogs took the lead in the second when Jesse Leroy scored the second of her three runs. She scored again in the fourth when Chakiryn Jackson
belted a double, plating Leroy for the third time. The shortstop went 2-for-3 for the game. “Chakiryn got a big RBI for us with that hit,” Henneberger said. Bulldog pitcher Kaytlyn Jones shut down the Warrior offense, and the Goochland defense played its consistent and reliable brand of softball. They’ll need to continue on their current streak to defeat the Lions and advance to the championship game. “I feel like we’ve been playing well, and if we continue to do the things we do well, we should be ok,” Henneberger said. The Bulldogs handed the Lions an 11-0 thumping two weeks ago, and the coach said it would take one of those caliber performances to get a third win against them. “We played them last week and did a great job at the plate and moving base runners. It was a total team effort. That’s
what we need to do again.” W. Albemarle......... 100 0000- 1 5 2 Goochland............. 110 100x- 3 4 1 Dunnsmore and Seely; K. Jones and Tester. GMS Eagles cap good season with nice win Submitted by Dave Falconer
The Goochland Middle School baseball season started with a great 15-inning win at home versus Louisa 10-9. Last week, it ended with great win at home versus Powhatan, 6-3 to finish with a 9-3 record. It was an awesome season from start to finish. In a game versus Collegiate, the Eagles were down 8-0 and ended up winning 10-8. The team has 20 players made up of seven eighth graders, 11 seventh graders and two sixth graders. All of them played and contributed this year. The hitting stars of the team were Seth Trice and Noah Doczi. The pitching stars were
Hunter Bailey and Coleman Duty. Here are a few game saving plays we made on defense this year to help the Eagles win. Centerfielder Cory Alexander had to run down a ball that was hit way over the outfielders. He got to it so quickly, turned and threw a strike to shortstop Reid Chenault. Reid then turned and fired a strike home to catcher Noah Doczi to tag the runner at home. Another amazing play was when Coleman was on the mound. He dove after a bunted ball, caught it and threw a strike to Reid at second base for a great double play. In the same game second baseman Andrew Harcum ran down a pop up in short right field behind first base. Harcum
had to go about 60 feet to make the play and save a few runs from scoring. In another game, Nathan Bussells made an outstanding play while catching. It was a swinging third strike in the dirt and Nathan had to go get the ball. He hustled after it, slid to get it, got up and threw a strike to first base for the out. It was yet another amazing play for the Eagles. Every game we made great plays to help save a few runs from scoring. Rounding out the rest of the Eagle baseball team are Ben Poff, Matt Payne, Michael Nadder, Chase Doczi, Matthew Ashley, Connor Lane, Kendall Dolan, Chris Scriber, Nick Norman, Evan

Moody Middle School student reads her poem at the White House Contributed Report Moody Middle School student Moira Bass read her poem “Shana” last week at an “An Evening of Poetry,” one of the first lady’s cultural gatherings at the White House. The event was hosted by the Obamas in a celebration of American poetry and prose. It was preceded by an afternoon workshop for students from across the country. First Lady Michelle Obama addressed the students from around the
country who attended the workshop. During the workshop, the students learned from many of the evening’s guests including poets, rappers and singers. President Obama opened the evening celebration with a greeting, and Bass read her poem aloud. Bass was selected to participate in the event after her poem won a Silver Medal Award in the Scholastic Writing Competition, a national writing contest.

By Lane Burgess Contrtibuting Writer “It’s kind of scary to dance on it; I go to the edge for the really high notes,” says Conner Schmitz, who played Josh in Deep Run High School’s recent production of “Big: the musical.” He’s referring to a handmade, oversized, foot-operated piano on which he performs two duets: “Heart and Soul” and
“Chopsticks.” The instrument and musical are based on the 1988 Tom Hanks’ film “Big,” which tells the story of 13 year-old Josh Baskin who wishes to be “big” and is transformed into a 30-year old man. Junior Alec Sparks, a lighting technician, designed the handmade keyboard and led in its construction by the stage crew. Art teacher Cary McCray, who designed the sets
for the musical, requested that Sparks lead in the development of the keyboard. “I’ve been doing lighting since I was a freshman,” says Sparks. “I’ve been recognized as someone who can engineer this sort of thing. I just kind of think like an engineer, but that’s not something I want to pursue.” “Big” Production continued on page 3
