Young cartoonist takes on issues of the day

Brandon Myrick, 12, thinks about all these things. And he worries. Then he draws cartoons about them.

Cartoonist continued from > page 1 of political cartoons called “Dr. Seuss Goes to War,� which he credits with helping to spark his interest in drawing cartoons, along with his art teacher Amanda Tolson-Valenzuela.

A civics and economics class also got him interested in politics and the economy, he said. “We watched CNN Student News and had to write an article each week,� he said.

Then during the SOL testing period he brought his Dr. Seuss book to school to look at during his down time.

That’s when he started drawing the political cartoons.

He’s only done seven cartoons so far, but has plans for more.

Brandon is particularly concerned about government

spending, the subject of two of his cartoons.

His first cartoon was “The yearly wallet dump,� depicting an upside down wallet emptying out all the bills for taxes.

His cartoon depicting the national debt calculator delivers a simple message – 2 MUCH! The cartoon makes its point by contrasting the technical aspect of keeping track of the nation’s debt with the simple realization shared by many that the country has borrowed too much. “You don’t even need to do the math,� he explained. “I think the government doesn’t realize we don’t have enough money,� said Brandon. “If you already owe your friend $14 billion how can you ask for more money,� he questioned.

Just to make things fair, he wonders why spending cuts can’t just be made across the board, say five percent from all government programs, “So no one is treated unfairly,� he explained.

When he’s not drawing cartoons, Brandon is active in Boy Scout Troop 710. He’s also a member of the LEGO Robotics team at GMS. And he’ll be going to the Governor’s School this summer.

Does he want to be a political cartoonist when he grows up? That’s unclear. He thinks he might want to get a job with LEGO. “It would be cool to work there and design new models,� he said.

But he plans to continue with his cartoons too. “I enjoy this because it’s a good way to express myself,� said Brandon.

HCA spokesperson Karen Nelson, speaking from the construction site, said the free standing emergency center which will form the nucleus of a medical complex for HCA in West Creek is on schedule to open before the end of the year. “A lot of things are happening,� said Nelson, standing near the steel beams of the 12,500 square foot facility. “In a project of this scope we work with many entities,� she said when asked if delays were over.

Earlier this spring Assistant County Administrator Don Charles said that Goochland County’s building permit was

ready and the county was waiting on a letter from HCA saying that any issues with regulatory agencies had been resolved. Any such issues have apparently been resolved and construction is underway. “It is exciting to see the HCA project moving forward.

The Building permit for the project has been issued and Goochland sees no obstacles that would prevent HCA from opening as scheduled. It is a pleasure to work with HCA on this project,� said Goochland County Administrator Rebecca Dickson in a recent email to the Gazette.

Project Engineer Eric Watson said the roof should be up by the end of June. A crew of about

10 is currently working at the site, a figure that should increase to about 100 later, mostly local contractors, said Watson. “It’s a really fast moving job,� said Watson.

Watson said one of the innovations of the building, the first phase of a complex planned to include a medical office building and a hospital, is a geo-thermal underground well system, which will use energy transfer to help heat and cool the building.

Located on a 60-acre tract near the intersection of Route 288 and Tuckahoe Parkway East, the facility will have 12 patient treatment centers, a CT scanner, ultrasound, x-ray equipment, a medical laboratory and a pharmacy.

FOIA lawsuit against schools fails Goochland Circuit Court Judge Timothy K. Sanner ruled in favor of the defendants last week in a lawsuit against Goochland Superintendent of Schools Linda Underwood and School Board Chairman Ivan Mattox.

Plaintiff Michael McDermott had asked the court to order Underwood and Mattox to comply with his Freedom of Information Act request for email addresses collected by the schools for the purpose of meeting and event notification.

School administration contacted those on its list after the FOIA request was received, giving them the opportunity to request their email addresses not be disclosed.

It furnished McDermott 1,110 email addresses after 582 parents opted out as a result of the communication from school administration.

McDermott argued that the “opt out� option must be provided before a FOIA request is received.

During the proceeding, Mattox was removed as a defendant in response to a motion by schools attorney Andrea Erard.

Judge Sanner ruled in favor of the remaining defendant, Underwood, according to Erard, saying that, in light of the obligations and responsibilities

imposed on public bodies by both the Virginia Freedom of Information Act as well as the Government Data Collection and Dissemination Practices Act, that Underwood’s actions permitted a balancing of responsibilities under both laws in affording parents the opportunity to opt out of having their email addresses made public. “I am pleased with the court’s ruling and I appreciate the court’s thoroughness in reviewing the pleadings. The members of the Goochland School Board and Dr. Underwood take their respon-

sibilities under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act very seriously and work hard to comply with the law.�

The suit was dismissed with prejudice, meaning it cannot be refiled.

McDermott said Monday that the school’s motion to dismiss was sent to him by regular mail at the last minute and he had not received it before the hearing. “The judge gave me time to look at it,� said McDermott.

McDermott also said the judge agreed that the law was vague and needed to be clarified by the General Assembly.

UDAs to be renamed

Urban Density Areas will be referred to as Village Mixed Use Areas in future discussion of the controversial state mandated plan to encourage the county to select areas to accommodate future population growth.

Goochland County Administrator Rebecca Dickson said the new presentation was a result of feedback from three community meetings.

Consultant Frank Cox said the word urban “doesn’t connote what the county is all about.” Cox said he thought the “change in nomenclature was appropriate.”

Called them what you will, the new proposed Centerville area is larger than before the public meetings and the Courthouse area is smaller. The current acreage envisioned is 757 acres in Centerville and only 112 in the Courthouse.

Supervisor Ned Creasey wanted to know if any designation was reversible and was assured by Dickson that, because it was a comprehensive plan change that it was.

Supervisor Rudy Butler said the fight to make UDAs optional would continue in the General Assembly next year, but said “we need it on a small scale.”

June, and then we’ll start reviewing it and defining goals for the county in July,” Rhoades said.

“We’ll put together a plan in August, and then in September, we’ll be back to present it.”

His presentation to the group Tuesday drew mixed reviews.

“I’m not going to get too excited right now,” one citizen who asked not to be identified said. “Tonight was just more of the same old rhetoric we’ve heard before. This isn’t the first time we’ve been down this path. I just hope that this time we get a plan and something is done with it.”

New Christian school coming to county

Tom Newbill, Ann McLean and Milby West are dreamers.

As individuals, they envisioned Goochland County as the right place for a Christian oriented private school. Several years ago, they got together and started talking about their shared interest.

In September, their dream will become reality with the opening of Hunter Country Day School on the grounds of Dover Baptist Church in Manakin-Sabot. “We have an educational building that really isn’t used except when we are having services,� said Dover Pastor Mike Gardner. “Over the years, we’ve been approached by other groups who wanted to utilize the area to open a day-care center or school. For some reason, we just didn’t find the mix right until Tom, Ann and Milby came along with their idea. “They were not only interested in a Christian based school, but in a lot of what we refer to as community involvement,� he added. “They have a strong commitment to involv-

ing the parents of the students in the education of their children and also in a strong commitment to accountability and responsibility on the part of students, parents and teachers in working not only in the school but in the community.�

Newbill talked more about family involvement. “We want the parents to be a part of the day-to-day education process of their children,� he said. “It might be helping out in the classroom or it might be at home. From time-to-time, we plan to give the children a topic that they have to discuss with their parents at the dinner table that night and then have the child relate what they learned to their class the next day. It’s just one way of getting the family involved in the education process of their child.�

The classes this fall will be for students from Kindergarten through the fourth grade. “We plan to add a grade every year until we have K through the eighth grade,�

McLean said. “At that point, we’ll evaluate where we are and decide if we want to grow the school to include high

Hunter Country Day school will be a mix of many other private schools. ‘We visited a lot of private schools, some in Virginia and others out of state,� Newbill said. “We are trying to take the best of what we saw at different schools as a model to guide us. It will be a growing process, but we are committed to creating a quality learning school.�

Sending the wrong message?

That could be what the Goochland Board of Supervisors did Monday afternoon, when they voted to give a $3,000 raise to members of the board who take office after the next election. That comes to $15,000 for members and $18,000 for the chairman, starting next year.

Now granted, the supervisors don’t make much, especially when you compare their pay to some other counties, like Henrico, where a supervisor makes $48,671 in base pay, or Chesterfield, where supervisors take home a minimum of $39,000.

But in hard times, leaders need to set an example and voting oneself a pay raise (all board members except Jim Eads, who abstained from the vote, are planning to run again, although some have not yet filed) may not be what the voters want to hear.

Much was made of the fact that the vote was for the maximum that the supervisors can receive and that the incoming board could in theory decline to receive the increase, or postpone it for a year or two into the next four-year term.

Perhaps they will. And one should note that the last time the supervisors got a raise was in 2005.

Still, it was surprising that the vote generated so little debate. One would have thought after two years of budget cutting and the prospect of another lean year coming up that voting oneself a raise would have been approached more cautiously.

Maybe it will become a campaign issue in this fall’s supervisors’ races.

Dog Days come early Every year it seems we battle a period of extreme heat but this year the dog days of summer seem to have come a little early.

In fact, the dogs didn’t even wait for summer to start barking, with temperatures close to triple digits kicking in last week, even before the official start date of summer, June 21. With the stifling heat and humidity it was easy to imagine we were already deep into August.

Heat seems to slow everyone down but despite the toasty temperatures, things are still going forward in the county.

Construction is underway at HCA’s free-standing emergency room, announced with much fan fare last year and now taking shape in West Creek The county and its residents, are surely glad to see this project advance as evidenced by the more than a couple calls we received from locals concerned that activity at the building site had ground to a halt.

Also of note is the progress of the county on developing an economic growth plan (see story page 1). With the slow recovery Goochland needs to do all it can to encourage appropriate development in the county and a plan and an economic development director are both needed as soon as they can be had.

Thank goodness by Monday, temperatures had eased. Let’s hope the dogs run off and don’t come back until August!

Simultaneous cuts to instructional staff include a full-time French language teacher ($57K), half of a drama position ($28.5K),

half of a music position ($28.5K) and a full-time librarian at the high school ($44K) – a total of approximately $158,000.

Goochland is now, effectively, a one-language school district, with three Spanish teachers, half a French teacher and half a Latin teacher. The drama program will struggle to function with only one part-time teacher, the band program has lost 25 percent of it’s teaching resources, and we have a new part-time elementary music teaching position, which might not be filled. eliminate federal income taxes, stop borrowing from Social Security to pay other bills, beef up border security greatly, repeal the Patriot Act, stop harassing consenting adults in their bedrooms, fund stem cell research to cure diseases and promote educational choice for our children.

One of Virginia’s most valuable agricultural assets, the honeybee, continues to struggle to survive.

“This past year we’re probably seeing higher losses than the year before,” said Keith Tignor, state apiarist with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. “We’re still surveying, and it will be a few months before we know exact results. But informally we’re hearing of lots of bee losses.”

Winter honeybee losses have averaged 31 percent over the past decade, according to statistics reported by Tignor to the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation Emerging Agricultural Enterprises Committee on April 28.

Honeybees are extremely valuable, because they are allpurpose pollinators, helping boost production of numerous agricultural crops. Tignor estimated honeybees increased the market value of all Virginia farm commodities by almost $110 million in 2007.

A rapid decline in commercial honeybee operations has made it more difficult to maintain a viable honeybee population in Virginia, Tignor said.

In 1950 the state had 83,149

bee colonies, but in 2010 that number had declined to 5,000.

A honeybee colony can have several hives. He estimated there are only 2,000 to 3,000 beekeepers in Virginia, with between 24,000 and 36,000 hives. Only about 200 of them are commercially active in helping farmers pollinate their crops.

Extension has been developing a Master Beekeeper program to help train beekeepers, and the number of local beekeeping associations has doubled in the past decade, from 18 groups in 2000 to 36 in 2010. Beekeepers and people interested in raising bees are encouraged to visit the Virginia Pollinator website at vdacs.virginia.gov/plant&pest/pollinator.shtml.

“We’re also encouraging beekeepers to look for local queen supplies and for local bees to start new colonies with,” Tignor said, explaining that most new queen bees are purchased from Georgia and other Southern states. “That will help us get bees that are acclimated to our climate, our winters and summers, our rainfall and droughts. That will also hopefully increase the genetic diversity of the bees and help them survive some of the problems we’ve had in the past.”

Goochland athletes facing the possibility of fees School Board budget discussion includes athletic fees

At the most recent Goochland County school board meeting, final budget numbers were announced and scholastic sports escaped the chopping block, as discussions to reduce the county’s financial burden by getting rid of some athletic activities was shelved- for this year anyway.

While the elimination of

sports including golf, gymnastics and swimming were initially explored, all of those sports will continue at Goochland High School.

However, the final presentation by Goochland Superintendent of Schools Linda Underwood included discussion of possible user participation fees for athletes in the future.

Jackson noted was some athletes would not participate, especially the ones who are not standouts or expect to further their sports careers in colleges. She feels it would drastically cut down on the number of kids who try out for teams each year.

“As far as participation, I think only the TRUE athletes will pay the user fees,” Jackson said. “Others that are in it just for recreation and have no intention in pursuing a career in sports, will not pay.”

Jackson is also clear on the bottom line effects of such a policy. “This will definitely affect participation. Pretty sad if it comes to this,” she said.

The school board agenda for the Tuesday, June 14 meeting included an information item on fees, one of which was a recommended $60 high school athletic fee. The fee would be payable after tryouts but prior to the first team practice.

There would also be a $60 middle school athletic fee.

Students eligible for free or reduced lunches would not be required to pay the Participation fee, according to the agenda item.

Board members are asked to provide direction to the school administration after studying the proposed participation fees.

Hicks and Cavaliers earn return trip to World Series

On Monday evening, former Goochland standout John Hicks and the Virginia Cavalier baseball team earned a return trip the College World Series with a dramatic 3-2 comeback win over UC Irvine.

No one has been hotter in the postseason for the Cavs than Hicks. The junior out of Goochland leads Virginia with 29 post season hits and is second only to Steven Proscia (30) of all active players in career hits during NCAA Tournament play.

Hicks and Proscia are neckand-neck in virtually every offensive category heading into Omaha. Hicks currently leads the Cavaliers with 88 hits on the season, one more than Proscia, while batting .340 with a .510 slugging percentage. Proscia had eight home runs with 58 RBI on the season, Hicks has seven homers with 57 RBI. Both have 132 total bases with Hicks scoring 51 times and Proscia 50. The one area where Hicks is clearly the front runner is

strikeouts. Hicks leads the team with 18 strikeouts on the season while Proscia has struck out 34 times.

Playing behind the plate, Hicks also leads the Cavaliers with 560 putouts from the catcher position.

Ironically, both Hicks and Proscia were selected by the Seattle Mariners in last week’s MLB draft. Hicks was selected in the fourth round (123rd overall) and Proscia in the seventh round (213).

Hicks was a Collegiate baseball Third-team All-American this year, a First Team All-ACC selection and a semifinalist for the Johnny Bench Award. Hicks finished the regular season 11th in ACC batting average and fourth in hits. He ranks third in UVa history in doubles, ninth in career runs and 10th in career hits.

The Cavaliers entered the NCAA Tournament as the #1 overall seed but their trip to Omaha came oh so close to not happening.

As a NCAA Super Regional host, Virginia pounced on the Anteaters in their Saturday opener, coming away with a 6-0 victory.

On Sunday afternoon, the Cavs appeared to be well on their way to the World Series after grabbing a 3-0 lead after five innings in the best of three series. But a four hour rain delay put their season in jeopardy.

UC Irvine came out of the break to score six runs in the final three innings and hand

Virginia a 6-4 loss sending the series into a tie-breaker.

The Cavaliers appeared to be in dire straits when the Anteaters took a 2-1 lead in the top of the ninth on Monday.

When Irvine’s Sean Madigan led off with a single nearly everyone at Davenport Field knew the next batter would attempt a bunt to advance the runner.

Brian Hernandez did just that, laying down a bunt that crawled straight towards the pitcher’s mound. Hicks leapt up from behind the plate, snared the ball and fired for teammate Chris Taylor at second to get a force on Madigan. But Hicks throw began to tail and Taylor did not pull off the bag causing the ball to go into centerfield, which set up Madigan at third from where he scored the go-ahead run.

Virginia had one final shot in the bottom of the ninth but saw those chances continue to dwindle after their first two batters were struck out.

Next up, David Coleman (Trinity Episcopal) got in a quick 0-2 hole bringing the Cavaliers one strike away from

seeing their season end.

But scoring with two outs on the board was nothing new for Virginia in the NCAA Tournament. The Cavaliers have scored 78 percent of their runs in the tournament (33 of 42 runs) after two outs have been recorded.

Coleman singled up the middle and he was replaced by pinch runner Mitchell Shifflett (Cosby).

Again Virginia looked to be in trouble when Jared King’s hard grounder headed straight for second but the ball caromed off the right heal of Irvine pitcher Matt Summers, giving the Cavs two runners on base.

Pinch-hitter Reed Gragnani (Mills Godwin) then stepped to the plate and never swung the bat as he was walked on four pitches to load the bases. Corey Hunt replaced King as a pinch runner.

Taylor then stepped to the plate with a shot at redemption for having played a part in Irvine’s go-ahead score.

With an 0-1 count, Taylor drilled a shot up the middle and into centerfield that allowed

Shifflett and Hunt to score sending Virginia on to Omaha.

Teams in the College World Series open in a double-elimination round between two pools of four teams. The winners of each pool advance to a best of three final series June 26-29.

Virginia (54-10) will open World Series play against California (37-21) in an ESPN broadcast game 2 p.m. Sunday, June 19. A victory would send the Cavaliers up against the winner of the Texas A&M (4720) vs South Carolina (50-14) matchup June 21 at 7 p.m. With a Virginia loss in the opener they would face the loser between the Aggies and the Gamecocks at 2 p.m.

In the upper bracket, North Carolina (50-14) will open against Vanderbilt (52-10) while Florida (50-17) takes on Texas (49-17).

Regardless of the outcome, Virginia will be a part of NCAA history being one of the eight teams to play the first College World Series at TD Ameritrade Park after the event was held at historic Rosenblatt Stadium from 1950 through 2010.

A close call at the plate gets a close look from the umpire in a game last week between the Mets and the Marlins. The Glen Allen Youth Athletic Association provides a positive experience for hundreds of youths each year.

RF&P still the place to be for youth baseball Founded in 1965, the Glen Allen Youth Athletic Association is wrapping another year of successful league play. Their home field is RF&P Field adjacent to Crump Park in Western Henrico County.

Although regular season play is drawing to a close, the group will host the 14year olds in the Babe Ruth World Series that begins August 20. Players from across the region will stay with host families in the area.

The League provides a positive experience for youths from 4 to 14 in baseball, softball, basketball and buddy ball and is fueled by volunteers from throughout the community. Patrick Logan is the current president of the association.

Freeman and Henrico High Schools were recognized last weekbytheVirginiaHolocaust Museum for their efforts in teaching students about the Holocaust and genocide.

The museum’s Director of Education, Rena Berlin presented the “NOW” award to both schools for going above and beyond in giving students a closer look at the Holocaust.

This is the first time the museum has ever given this award.

“I think this award will spark even more interest and awareness of the mission of the museum and the initiatives of our school organizations that have partnered with the museum,” said Freeman High School Principal Anne Poates.

Teachers from both schools participated in the museum’s Alexander Lebenstein Teacher Education Institute, a three credit graduate class in conjunction with the University of Richmond, which is taught by museum staff and current and former classroom teachers at the museum. Both schools brought students on tours of the museum during

the school year.

Henrico High School brought its entire staff to the museum for training on how to teach students about the Holocaust before school began.

“It is exciting to receive this award because our efforts went beyond learning about the Holocaust.

Everyone learned not only how to become tolerant of other cultures, but how to embrace these cultures as well,” said Henrico High School Principal Ron Rodriguez. “We are extremely grateful and humbled by the recognition.”

The two schools tried to gain an understanding of the Holocaust in a variety of ways, through art, music and critical examination.

“The (schools) understood that in order to teach about ‘Man’s inhumanity to man’ they needed to focus on teaching students about genocide, past and present, in order to change the world,” Berlin said. “I am excited that these schools stepped out of the SOL pattern in order to bring depth of understanding and analysis.”
