Just before the start of the annual Goochland Relay for Life program was scheduled to start last Friday, a heavy thunderstorm doused the grounds of the Goochland Elementary School track with a heavy downpour. But that did little to dampen the spirits of the folks who gathered there for the 17th annual Goochland Relay for Life. Some of the signup sheets at the Silent Auction run by Howard Mayo and his crew were a little damp, but no matter. Last year the auction raised $2,100 and this year of course the goal was to

best that. Theme of this year’s event was “It’s a Wild, Wild West and we Want a Cure,” so many folks were dressed in western duds. Sophie Pryor, who lost her husband and mother to cancer, said she’s only missed one year out of 17. “I’ve spent every night out here but one,” she said. Pryor was a member of the leading fund raising team, the Mt. Gilead Purple Hearts, who by early Friday evening had raised more than $11,000. They even had a covered wagon to go with the event theme. Alan Tucker will run for Goochland Board of Supervisors this fall, challenging first term incuambent Ned Creasey for the 3rd District seat. It’s the first run for public office for Tucker, 53, Goochland Democratic Party Chairman. In an interview at his home in Maidens Loop, Tucker said he knows he faces a tough battle. “It’s an uphill challenge for me,” he acknowledged.

Tucker, a real estate agent for Joyner Fine Properties, was born and raised in Goochland,graduatingfromGoochland High School in 1976. He took a B.S. in Business Administration at William and Mary College and worked for a number of years in New York City. He returned to Goochland five years ago and built a home on a parcel adjacent to his parents. He is a member of Grace Episcopal Church and the Goochland Chamber of Commerce. said he will run as an independent and will relinquish his leadership role in the party when his term expires in December. “It’s a good time to bring new leadership into the party,” he noted, adding that local politics has traditionally been independent and that he is open to ideas from all sides. One of his main concerns is the perceived lack of communication between the board of supervisors and the school board. see Tucker > page 2
