County seeks input on UDAs in two meetings By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent

Goochland County held its final round of meetings recently designed to gather public comments on establishing new urban development areas (UDAs) in the county. The final session focused on the courthouse area, and plans to designate areas for higher density, mixed use development. The General Assembly mandated their creation two years ago, but there is political uncertainty surrounding the new guidelines. Although there is a concerted effort in the General Assembly to

make UDA mandates optional, county planner Tom Coleman said his staff must proceed by standards of the current law. UDAs are areas designated for future growth that feature walkable neighborhoods, a combination of residential and commercial development and are targeted for areas already served by public water and sewer. “This is the second series in a number of community meetings we’ve been having regarding whether or not the county would like to have higher density, mixed use zonsee UDAs > page 2
