The Goochland Farmers Market held its third Kids Day last Saturday, with a Watermelon Spitting Contest, Mutton Bustin’ with Carney Man Productions and Read Aloud Virginia’s Storyland. The Goochland Fire Department was also on hand to give firefighting demonstrations, and to let kids learn how to handle a fire hose. errant watermelon seeds. “Oh my gosh it was great,” said Center for Rural Culture’s Beth Hopkins of the Mutton Bustin’ contest. “It’s been a great day,” she said. The tent for the young vendors was full of customers: Eleven Kid Vendors hawked their goods to prospective buyers. Items for sale included baked goods and honey from the 4-H; oatmeal raisin, sugar and chocolate chip cookies
It’s time for the county to step back, take a look at its schools, and see the big picture, said Goochland County School Superintendent Linda S. Underwood at last week’s school board workshop. “I’d like see a comprehensive, systematic process allow the board, school staff and the community… to see what we’re about, what we believe in, what are our goals are for the future and how we’re going to get there,” said Underwood. The school superintendent asked the school board how they could proceed with creating a plan that would renew the district’s mission and reestablish its priorities. “There are different ways we can do it,” said Underwood, suggesting options such as an outside facilitator to guide what could be a year-long process. School board member Andrew Meng said that a previous comprehensive plan had been a joint effort between the school board and the board of supervisors. County Administrator Rebecca Dickson
