“Today we are going to work on the standing position,” said head 4-H rifle instructor Mike Wilson last Sunday, as nine-year-old Matthew Cosby and Zack Bennett, 13, both members of the Goochland 4-H Shooting Education Club listened attentively. To get the most stable shooting platform, you need bone on bone support, Wilson explained, as he demonstrated supporting the forearm of a .22 rifle with his left hand while resting his left elbow on his hip. “It may look a little funny but it definitely works,” said Wilson. After the coaching session, Cosby and Bennett went to the line, shooting 10-round strings at a distance of 25 yards under the watchful eyes of their T H E

instructor and their dads, and Cavalier Rifle and Pistol Club volunteer Mike Fitzpatrick. Clear range commands to begin and cease fire were issued to the shooters. And at the end of each string of 10 rounds, the command was given to place the rifles on the table with bolt open and a clear rifle indicator inserted into the chamber. Meanwhile, four more 4-H members were honing their shotgun skills at the sporting clays station at Cavalier in western Hanover County, using .410, 20 and 12 gauge shotguns. They took a break when the device that threw the clay targets briefly malfunctioned. Adam Henley, 14, said he was learning the proper stance and how to lead the target. “You’ve got to lead it just a little bit,” he explained. “I’ve hit a few,” he responded when asked how see 4-H Club> page 3
