School sports programs ask for funds GHS and GMS request money for game officials, security staff By Amy Condra acondra@goochlandgazette.com
Goochland’s school athletic programs need more money, said Goochland High School Principal Francie Ball at last week’s School Board workshop. “You build into your budget each year help for our athletic department, for supporting our athletic teams, not just in the high school but in the middle school,” said Ball. “We request that you build in a line item that addresses officials.” Goochland High School Athletic Director Bryan Gordon said that the athletic department pays about $25,000 for officials and $7,000 for security staff to assist at high school and middle school games. “We anticipate that this year, if you help us with security or officials, we’ll probably be all right, because we’ll take in money at our gates this year if the weather is good,” said Ball. “If it doesn’t rain, we will make money!” Ball said that costs such as uniforms,

Horses continued from > page 1 first option more likely, a tour of some of the most interesting horse barns in Goochland is scheduled for later this month. Set for Sunday, September 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the tour will feature five unique barns in Goochland County, plus a firsttime look at the highly successful training program at Barn 4 at the James River Correctional Center in Goochland. Barn 4 is the permanent home of Secretariat’s grandson, Covert Action. Proceeds from the tour will benefit Greener Pastures. TRF’s Second Chances farm at the James River Work Center is one of eight correctionsbased TRF programs, where rescued ex-racehorses are rehabilitated for adoption and TRF provides nationally-recognized Groom Elite vocational training for offender caretakers. TRF pays for all the equinerelated costs of the program at JRWC, including the curriculum and training for the men. TRF is entirely dependent on donations from the public. All gifts to the non-profit organization are tax-deductible. TRF and Second Chances can make a big difference in the lives of thoroughbred racehorses and the men who are trained in their care at James River. “After they race them they just discard them,” said David Hampton, 30, a graduate of the Groom Elite Program at James River. He is now learning Equine Dentistry and hopes to have a job working with horses when he finishes his sentence in two more years. Hampton said he has some problems with the horse racing industry. “I love the program and the animals but I don’t agree with horseracing,” he said. Hampton said the program gives the animals “somewhere

to go instead of the slaughterhouse.” According to the TRF website, the prospects of a typical retired thoroughbred racehorse are not good. “Reality is a Thoroughbred industry made up largely of owners with only modest resources and current economics that dictate that among all owners, no matter how responsible and well-intended, only a relatively few are capable of maintaining even a single Thoroughbred once it is unable to earn its keep on the track,” says the website. “Reality is a world where horse meat is in demand in many foreign countries and there are several slaughterhouses in the U.S., Canada and Mexico happy to create a supply.” TRF is determined to change that and the barn tour and the Second Chances program at James River Correctional Center are part of the plan. “We’ve been very fortunate that the Department of Corrections front-line people have been so supportive,” said Goochland horsewoman and TRF National President Robin Traywick Williams. “It’s a professional operation in a correctional center – people will be surprised by what they see,” she said. Not only do the horses benefit but the inmate trainees do as well, said Williams.
“I got involved to save horses,” said Williams, “but when I met the men the first day, I saw their faces light up. I realized we were saving people too.” Williams said the inmate trainees learn teamwork and life skills working with horses and each other. “They take pride in the program,” said Williams. Currently Greener Pastures can handle 25 horses and has 10 inmates in the training program. Several inmates who have graduated from the program have gone on to work in the industry after their release. Nineteen horses have been adopted out into new homes, said Brandy Nixon, Institutional Coordinator of the Greener Pastures program at James River, which was established less than three years ago. “One just left this morning,” she said. Some of the barns that tour members will see September 19 include “Clarendon,” a private facility owned by Betsy and Robert Fauntleroy, and a stateof-the-art hunter and jumper show barn, Henebry Farm, a full-care board facility offering pasture boarding, retirement boarding, extended lay-ups, training and horse sales. Virginia Equine Clinic at Deep Run Hunt Club, the base of a very busy ambulatory veterinary practice will be open for viewing.
Mt. Bernard Farm, a private racehorse breeding and boarding facility listed as a National Register of Historic Places property dating to 1850, is on the tour. The classical revival property is rarely opened to the public. Another attraction is Sterling Farm, a privately owned farm specializing in breeding Russian Calvary horses, the Budyonny. Because the Budyonny breed was recently introduced in the United States there are less than 50 in America. And of course James River Correctional Center Barn 4, permanent home of Covert Action and the Groom Elite program, will be on the agenda. Clarendon owner Betsy Fauntleroy said she has always been an animal advocate and was eager to help with the TRF program.
If you go... Ticket cost is $25 per person. To preorder, mail to Marshie Davis at 2391 Broad Street Rd. Maidens, Va. 23102. Or call 804556-4186. Tickets may also be bought online (use the purchase button bar on the left.) Day of ticket sales will be at Barn 4, Virginia Equine Clinic and Henebry Farm. Goochland Fire-Rescue wins awards They call it DTB time. It stands for door to balloon time. Measured from the time the ambulance crew brings the patient through the doors of the hospital until a balloon is in the artery of the patient, it can be critical in saving lives or preventing more extensive damage to heart muscle starved of oxygen rich blood by a coronary artery blockage. At Henrico Doctors Hospital, Goochland Fire/ EMS holds the record for DTB at 23 minutes. Last Wednesday evening at the Henrico Doctors Lecture Series meeting, two Goochland Fire/EMS crews were honored during the EMS Recognition Program part of the meeting for their quick responses in July. In two cases, one on July 8 and the next day on July 9, crews used their new technology to transmit diagnostic data to the hospital that allowed their patients to
bypass the emergency room and go straight to the catherization lab, where a probe was threaded into the coronary arteries to the point of the blockage. There a “balloon” is inflating, restoring blood flow to the cardiac muscle. The case on July 9 was particularly difficult, since it involved a contractor working on a house who was unable to give good directions to it. He was in so much pain he “didn’t know where he was,” said the patient, who attended the meeting. Goochland Sheriff ’s Deputy Izzet “Izzy” Murat was first on the scene, eventually joined by Goochland Deputy Emergency Services Director Eddie Ferguson and his wife Beth. Then, guided by Dispatcher Jewel Jasper, EMS providers Earl Taylor and Paul Smith arrived. “We saw Big Earl coming down the driveway,” said Ferguson. Taylor said they gave the patient oxygen and hooked up a 12-Lead EKG.

Henrico Doctors Hospital EMS Liaison Valeta Daniels presents a cake to Daniel Sprouse, center and Bruce Zirkle for their record setting transport of a recent heart attack victim to the hospital’s catherization lab.
“He’s having the big one,” Taylor recalled saying as he saw the patient. They called a STEMI – code for a heart attack. All three catherization tables were in use so the patient had to stay briefly in the emergency room, said Valeta Daniels, EMS Liaison at Henrico Doctors Hospital. Still the DTB time was 38 minutes versus a national average of 90 minutes, according to Daniels.
One day earlier, EMS providers Daniel Sprouse, Gordon Taylor and Bruce Zirkle set the DTB record time of 23 minutes with another patient suffering an acute heart attack. Daniels presented Sprouse and Zirkle with a cake decorated with a 23 minute logo to commemorate their accomplishment. Crew member Taylor was unable to attend the meeting.

Goochland landmark gone Bowles Store site demolished due to storm damage By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com
On August 2 Richard Costanzo was driving to work when he realized that one of Goochland’s historic landmarks was no longer standing: Men were razing the damaged remains of what was once a general store at the corner of Genito and Cardwell Roads. Heavily damaged by a thunderstorm earlier this month, the building was unsafe, said owner Larry Page. “Half of the tin roof blew off and landed on a neighbor’s property,” said Page. Page added that after the storm damaged the building it was structurally unsound. “When we first moved there we had some new windows put in but we never used it for anything,” said Page, owner of Page Custom Rods & Restoration, who has owned the property for 25 years. Although it hadn’t been used for years, the landmark Costanzo had missed on his morning drive had been in the county for at least 110 years. In “Goochland Yesterday and Today,” written by Cece Bullard and published by the Goochland Historical Society, the building is pictured as it appeared circa 1900. Malcolm Bowles and his assistant George Vaughan pose in front of the general store in a photograph. Some local folks recall when Bowles Store was a focal point of activity in the area. O.L. Ligon, 90, who lives on Shallowell Road, said he grew up about two and a half miles from the store. “It was the center of activity in its heyday,” said Ligon.

“You could bring in a dozen eggs and trade them for a quart of milk.” Ligon said he was not surprised that the old building had been taken down. “The last time I saw it the roof had been damaged,” he said. Ed Wilson, 73, who lives nearby, said he remembers his father talking about the store. “My father said it was a center of commerce,” said Wilson. “It’s kind of sad to see it go.” According to Wilson the store served as a polling place and a post office. Wilson said his father described how farmers would bring their goods to the store, where the owner served as a broker. He also recalled a story
his father told of how teenage boys would drive herds of turkeys from Bowles Store all the way to market in downtown Richmond at Schockoe Bottom. “It must have been 20 miles,” said Wilson. George Taylor, who said
he has lived nearby all his life, said his father Miller Taylor told him Bowles Store used to be “a booming place.” “You could get a horse, a mule or a cow there,” Taylor recalled his father telling him. “Anything you needed for the farm.”

Haskell. Gordon said that in some counties, students were being asked to pay fees to subsidize athletic programs. “They’re paying $100 a whack per sport to play,” Gordon said. School Board members discussed options to increase revenue, such as selling advertising space on banners posted at games. “With these economic times, people cringe at the price of advertising,” said Gordon. School Board member Ivan O. Mattox said that the athletic programs provided a positive outlet for Goochland school children. “I think we definitely

Quotes and comments Henry Louis Mencken was a newspaperman well-known during the first half of the last century. He was a prolific writer, offering up words to wound those ideas and individuals he found intolerable, and he didn’t shy away from controversy. He also didn’t shy away from acknowledging the tendency of humans to be passionate in their frustrations. “Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats,” said Mencken. I think Mencken was onto something about how people think. Newspapers attract and encourage reader engagement, and lately, on our editorial page and in the comments section of our website, The Gazette has received a lot of feedback. Some of that feedback isn’t directed solely at stories that have appeared in the paper; several readers have responded to other readers, to offer admonishments or praise depending on what has been said. The latest exchange, both in the paper and on the website, was prompted by a letter written by Jane Christie on August 18, in which she questioned school fees and the schools’ choice to subsidize the cell phone costs of some employees. Reaction was mixed: Some readers applauded her research and readiness to examine fiscal issues; others felt that her letter
didn’t reflect the full reasoning of why certain budgetary decisions had been made. There were comments that complaining about fees and phones was designed to create dissension and that greater collaboration is needed to get past budgetary and communication problems. I agree that the overarching goal here is productive dialogue. But I don’t think it’s necessarily bad to raise an issue out of anger, even though several people said that that was not the best place to start a conversation. Well, unless you’re screaming your point with your hands clamped over your ears to avoid hearing anyone who might disagree, I think you’re probably ok. I believe that anger can be constructive if it prompts questions that lead to an informed point of view, and if those questions are raised calmly and rationally. Because sure, I think most of us have had a day when we’re tempted to, metaphorically, begin slitting throats. Especially in this economy when budgets, and thus nerves, are stretched beyond an easy point. We as individuals have to be accountable, and we expect our elected and appointed officials to be so as well. So we raise, and respond to, issues. And we seek answers. And isn’t that what an enlightened citizenry is meant to do?

OPINION: Letters to the Editor children are no longer in the GCPS system, the remaining children face growing class sizes, and I’d rather see that trend stopped, than give administrators cell phones, which offer no real “value in terms of student achievement. When school administration demands that teachers and students achieve more with less, it risks appearing bloated and entitled by comparison. The claim that seven of 200 non-teaching positions were eliminated in the budget is not strictly true, because the “essential functionality of these administrative positions has been added back, in the form of additional billable hours for other administrative employees, and as third party contractor fees. I do not feel that paying over $28,000 a year to provide mobile phones to 32 administrative staff members, who are generally bound to one of our five school buildings during a normal day, is either essential, or justifiable. How often are these personnel inaccessible during school hours via the school phone-lines, email, iChat, or the messaging system? Mr. Gannon claims that government funding covers mobile phone expenses, but this doesn’t make them free - the taxpayer is just paying out of a different pocket! Our schools must learn to distinguish between needs, and wants, if they are to teach these basic concepts to our children and earn community respect. My previous letter accurately described school fees and did not claim they had been increased, so I disagree it was misleading. In the current economic climate, with
record numbers of Americans making withdrawals from their retirement accounts and 10 percent of U.S. homes at risk of foreclosure, many families are struggling to make ends meet, but that financial hardship does not exempt them from paying school and AP test fees. AP test fees are optional, and we have not yet made the decision to pay them. The Virginia colleges to which our children would apply require a pass level of 4-5 to qualify as credit towards a college degree and VASS, where applicable, requires a level 3 pass. This year, GCPS has fewer teachers and more limited resources. To enable parents to make an informed decision, it would be helpful if past AP test results for GHS were readily available, to demonstrate that these courses are being taught to the required standard, to monitor trends and ensure we are making good progress. This coming year, we may need to cut hundreds of thousands more from the school budget, so providing cell phones for employees with desk phones throughout the school system seems wasteful. What has been achieved with consolidating healthcare between the schools and the county is a great example of what should now be done with building maintenance, auto fleet sizing, auto-maintenance, computer services and more. Parents will continue to make constructive suggestions to the Superintendent and School Board in the hope that maybe, this year, someone will listen!

Centerville to become another Short Pump?
Attending Goochland County’s August Board of Supervisors 7:00 p.m. session and witnessing the Major Thoroughfare Plan (MTP) presentation displayed further evidence of the cruise ship “County of Goochland behaving again like the rudderless juggernaut previously grounded times too numerous to count by her captainless crew. The same crew that brought us the Tuckahoe Creek Service District (TCSD) now wants to bring us the latest installment in their “Field of Dreams saga, “Pump our Ville(s)! “Build it, and they will come, was the all too familiar mantra we heard from our “good ol’ boy supervisors. Well, our “good ol’ boys built a bureaucratic cesspool of which even Washington D.C.’s Beltway Bandits would be proud! Money in and nothing but lip service out. HCA’s construction of its West Creek Emergency Center beginning this fall is refreshing news. This $11.2 million investment is expected to be completed by early 2012, hopefully as the first phase of a 97-bed, $183 million hospital on a 60-acre site at the West Creek site. But this is old news, as it was announced in 2005 and is only finally coming to fruition. As they say in the real world, “What have you done for us lately? Considering our current board’s desire to bring dry cleaners to Jane A. Christie Manakin Sabot Centerville, and lot liz-
ards to Oilville, has anyone noticed Microsoft just announced plans to open its most advanced data center in Mecklenburg County (VA), investing up to $499 million, and providing 50 jobs initially? What do data centers and West Creek (TCSD) have in common? Perhaps if Goochland had visionary and proactive leadership we would know. Those we elected find the view from their rear view mirrors alltoo-comfortable. Which, speaking of rear view mirrors (cars) brings me to my opening theme. If I wanted to live in Short Pump, I would move there. Centerville’s MTP plan looks like a carbon copy of Short Pump. Again, if we want Short Pump, we can move there! There have been further rampant rumblings of leapfrogging development past Centerville to Oilville, which is even more infrastructurally challenged. This is not the answer to Goochland’s current fiscal morass. We can not grasp at straws because we have failed to prudently craft a sustainable and sober development model. We need not equate development with Short Pump-like “mixed use sprawl. “Don’t Short Pump Varina bumper stickers have been spotted, to which I add a pop cultural reference to MTV’s “Pimp my Ride, that being “Don’t Pump our Ville(s). All proceeds from “Don’t Pump our Ville(s) bumper stickers will be donated equally to those opposing an incumbent in our 2011 elections. Michael M. McDermott Maidens

Cadets, Bulldogs slug it out in opener Better late than never for young Cadets BY JIM RIDOLPHI Special Correspondent
Friday night’s postponement of the Goochland home opener turned out to be a good thing for their opponents. Benedictine took full advantage of the schedule change that moved the night road game at GHS to an afternoon home game for the Cadets at Bobby Ross Stadium, where they handed the Bulldogs a 146 loss. Cadets Coach Greg Lilly said the hiccup in the schedule, caused by torrential rains in Goochland on Thursday, was significant because it “gave us one more day to prepare. We’re a young team and we needed all the time we could get things ready for Goochland.” Bulldogs Coach Joe Fowler downplayed the delay, but noted a decided difference in conditioning that did favor the Cadets. “Those guys didn’t look like the heat bothered them while we were cramping up and wilting in the sun,” he said. “They were ready to play football. We weren’t.” Both teams displayed a good amount of first game jitters at the start. “We had to call time out because we only had 10 men on the field and our
quarterback got picked on one of his first passes,” Lilly said. “The key was not letting the turnovers get us down and we didn’t. Our defense stepped us and saved us today.” Cadet quarterback David Geary came out firing against a revamped Bulldog secondary, but his passes just missed the mark throughout the first half. “Our passing game was a little off today, and we need to work on that, but we had some patterns that almost worked,” Lilly said. “We were just off by a little.” Late in the first period, Goochland’s Patrick Clore picked a Geary pass and the Bulldogs set up at the Cadet 26-yard line. But Goochland failed to capitalize and eventually fumbled the ball back to the Cadets. Goochland began the following drive in Cadet territory, relying on a steady dose of running back David McKenna. Colby Cooke capped that drive with a 26-yard field goal, and the Bulldogs enjoyed a 3-0 lead early in the second quarter. The junior placekicker then added a 33-yard field goal later in the quarter, and the Bulldogs took a 6-0 lead to intermission. But the Cadets came out in the second half with a renewed purpose, especially on defense. Geary’s passes began to find
their mark to wideout Solomon Bullitt. Coupled with a defense that stopped the Goochland running game cold, it was all the Cadets needed. “Our defense really stood out today and carried us,” Lilly said. “They consistently made key stops to give our offense a chance to get going.” On the other side of the field Fowler’s offense sputtered throughout the second half and never mounted a legitimate threat to the stout Cadet defense. “We think we are in great physical shape and that’s our plan- to wear teams down and take over in the fourth quarter,” Lilly said. That’s exactly what the young Cadets did; scoring two touchdowns in the fourth quarter on a Geary to Bullitt pass followed by a 19-yard run by sophomore tailback Corey Downey. Geary, a junior, finished the day 11-of-27 with one interception. Bulldog starter Ryan Crouch was 6-of-13 with two picks. But it was the Cadet defense that sealed the deal for Benedictine and Lilly was quick to credit their efforts. “Coach Coles and our defense was physical today with Nigel Williams and Keith Johnson,” Lilly said. “The

defense kept us in the game, and great play from the guys up front allowed our secondary to play physical football and come up and make some tackles.” Senior linebacker Nick Valentine had six solo tackles and six assists and Williams, who played both ways for much of the game, had four tackles, four assists and three receptions on offense. Fowler said it’s back to the drawing board for his team.
“We go back to square one and work on fundamentals such as carrying the football,” he said. “I don’t mind losing to football teams that are better, but today we beat ourselves.” Running back McKenna led Goochland with seven carries for 71 yards. Ryan Coles had three catches for 42 yards. The veteran coach said his Bulldogs would build on the positives and work hard on the negatives.
“I thought we were better team than that,” Fowler said. “Our defense played great and our special teams great, but our offense really let us down today with the turnovers.” Goochland 0 6 0 0 - 6 Benedictine 0 0 0 14 - 14 G- Cooke 26-yard field goal G-Cooke 33 yard field goal B- Bullitt, Solomon, 19-yard pass from David Geary, (Geary kick) B- Downey, Corey, 12-yard run, (Geary kick)
Talent returns for Cadets and Cougars boys soccer squads BY DAVE LAWRENCE Special Correspondent
With only a handful of graduating seniors to replace, both Collegiate and Benedictine hope to make a return appearance to the Virginia Independent Schools’ boys soccer tournament this season. Last year, the Cougars won the Prep League and advanced to the VIS finals, losing on penalty kicks to nationally ranked Episcopal of Alexandria. They lost only three starters, Chris Bean (of
Goochland), Joachim Katchinoff and Michael Blair. Collegiate returns some heavy hitters, however. One is junior midfielder Michael Howard – who shared VIS state player of the year honors with Alex Smith of Episcopal. Howard also earned All-Prep League and All-Metro honors. Senior defender Andrew Elliott, last year’s Prep League Player of the Year as well as VIS All-State and All-Metro honoree, returns and is one of the Cougars’ team captains this
year. A third important returnee is senior forward Andrew Elliott. Elliott was the region’s top scorer with 16 goals and five assists, earning VIS AllState, All-Prep-League and All-Metro honors. Sophomore Brady Straus and junior Thomas Hatcher return in the midfield, and another key player, senior forward Timmy Albright returns after missing almost all of last year because of surgery. Finally, senior goalkeeper Richard
Byrd returns—but as he is the Cougars’ only keeper, he exposes an important weakness in Collegiate’s lineup. “It’s critical that we stay healthy with only one goalkeeper and a cousee Soccer >page 13 Photo by Dave Lawrence

GHS girls volleyball will depend on youth BY JIM RIDOLPHI Special Correspondent
Entering its second year in the Group AA Jefferson District, the Goochland volleyball team faces some high hurdles as the season approaches. Coach Bert Stanley enters the campaign with only four returning varsity players and a wealth of youngsters looking for experience. “This year we have a very young team,” Stanley said. “We have six sophomores, four juniors and four seniors. With only four returning varsity players, we are obviously not very experienced and will have to get our players acclimated to playing volleyball at the varsity level.” A solid junior varsity program means some of the young players have court experience, but the challenge will be getting the sophomore-laden team to play as a unit. “Margie Yurick has a done a great job with the JV program,” Stanley said. “The number one focus of a JV coach should be to get kids ready to play at the varsity level and Yurick is doing that.” Stanley feels the athletic potential of his young team will depend of their ability to play together as a cohesive team. “The biggest challenge facing this year’s team is gelling,” he said. “We need to work on coming together as a team.
We have a lot of talent but until we play together and work together as a unit, our talent will not amount to much.” The coach’s job is further complicated by the schedule, which brings a tough, consistent lineup in the district and presents one challenge after another. “The Jefferson District is one of the toughest districts in the state,” he said. “Last year, three girls from the Jefferson received All-State recognition. When you have that type of talent in a district, it shows how competitive it is.” Returning to the Group A next year, Stanley said the Bulldogs are ready for the change. “As far as returning to the James River (District) next season, I feel that we will be a vastly improved team next year with 10 returning varsity players, so I hope we play well no matter what district we are competing.” But the first task at hand is this season, and Stanley will depend of his limited senior leadership to anchor a team comprised of a majority of underclassmen. “This team has a lot of athletic ability and strong senior leadership,” Stanley said. “Our captains, Chelsea Palvano and Callie Alvis, are two dedicated and hardworking young ladies who understand the importance of doing the little things correctly.”
Photos by Jim Ridolphi
Goochland Co-captains Chelsea Palvano (above) and Callie Alvis (right) return for their final season with the Bulldogs.
That senior leadership will become necessary. “Our biggest weakness will be experience,” Stanley said. “We are a very young team and we need to grow up on the court if we want to have a successful season.” Even with the youth and lack of experience, Stanley feels this team has the potential for long-term success. “If these kids work as hard as I have seen them work in the past, they have a chance to be very successful but they have to work hard and realize that it is easier to say you want to win than it is to actually demonstrate it.”
Soccer continued from >page 12 ple of other guys who, if they went down, it would be awfully tough to plug somebody into those spots,” said Collegiate coach Charlie Blair. Blair said the other players it would be especially hard to replace are Elliott and Howard. The Cougars plan to play an aggressive style of soccer this year. “We play a possession game and we’re going to try to knock it around and get a lot guys forward in the attack,” Blair said. But that strategy requires good team chemistry, something that takes time to build. “We’re developing that chem-
istry that you get form playing together,” said Blair. “We do a lot of small-sided stuff. … Build from the small sides to a full roster—get all 11 guys on the same page, that’s what we’re working towards.” Benedictine made it to the VIS quarterfinals last year, where they were eliminated by St. Stephen’s-St. Agnes. Like Collegiate, the Cadets fielded a young team last year, losing only three starters to graduation. They are fielding another young team this year, with a solid group of juniors led by forward Colton Konvicka—their leading scorer—and midfielders Daniel Gill and Hunter Morgan. But Benedictine expects strong lead-
ership from its two senior captains, forward Robert Meachem and defender Ian Simmons. The experience of the Cadets’ relatively young starting 11 bodes well for Benedictine’s postseason ambitions. “We have a lot of experience from our back four to the top of our forwards,” said Benedictine assistant coach Ryan Hall. “I think we’ll be able to possess the ball pretty well, and we’ll have pretty good chemistry.” The Cadets’ work ethic and teamwork also impresses Hall. “The kids are very disciPhotos by Dave Lawrence plined, they get after it,” Hall said. “There’s no ‘I’ on the team. Left: An injury free year will be imWhen they’re playing , they’re portant to Collegiate keeper Richard Byrd. Above: Benedictine’s Ryan playing with each other.” Winfrey

Meeting the animals at Meadow Farm

Jack and Jenna Raggio get the feel of the wool on one of Meadow Farm’s sheep at Meet the Animals Day last Saturday as Agricultural Interpreter Rim Gardner watches. At right, Historical Interpreter Andy Butler feeds Clyde, the farm’s 33-year-old Percheron draft horse. More than 100 visitors turned out for the annual event, said Gardner.
By Ken Odor Media General Staff Writer “And the cow jumped over the moon,” goes the old nursery rhyme. Over at Meadow Farm on Mountain Road in Glen Allen, visitors learned that a cow can jump a fence. And they can have horns, too. That was a surprise to Jack Raggio, 5, who came with his mom Noel and his
sister Jenna, 7, to meet the animals last Saturday. “The cow can jump over the fence, the man said,” related Jack. Jenna learned something new about a horse’s lifespan, after meeting “Clyde,” a 1,700 pound retired Percheron draft horse, who is 33 years old. “I didn’t know horses could live so long,” said Jenna. But not forever. Butler said Clyde’s
sister, named Bonnie of course, had died last year and the old horse had taken some months to get over the loss of his sister and pasture mate. Noel said the family had recently moved from Baton Rouge, La. to the Richmond area after her husband got a job teaching at the University of Richmond. It was their first trip to continued on page 2

Agricultural Interpreter Rim Gardner bangs the feed pail to get the sheep to follow him at Meet the Animals Day at Meadow Farm last Saturday. The staff took visitors on a tour of the grounds introducing them to the farm’s livestock.
Meeting the Animals at Meadow Farm continued from front page
Meadow Farm. “It’s the most people we’ve ever had,” said Agricultural Interpreter Rim Gardner, who estimated more than 100 folks turned out to meet the animals on a pleasant Saturday morning. Gardner showed each group the chickens, sheep and turkeys, while Historical Interpreter Andy Butler introduced the farms two cows and lone horse to the visitors. One of the cows is actually a
cattalo, explained Butler, a cross between cattle and buffalo. The other, the one with the horns, is a Devon, a traditional breed. Butler explained that a cow can outrun any man if it has a mind to and can jump over the rail fence too. But they always come back when they see the feed bucket. “That’s their holy grail,” said Butler. The staff at Meadow Farm strive to maintain livestock that are in keeping with what might have actually been kept when the Sheppard family ran the farm.
So no modern Holstein milking cows, explained Butler, which can produce three or four times as much milk as the Meadow Farm cows. The farm’s sheep are from a breed called Gulf Coast Native, which come from Florida. They do better in the hot weather, explained Gardner. All Gardner had to do to get the sheep to gather for show and tell was pick up the feed pail and bang on it a little and he had the flock following him. Then he’d grab one and swing it over the fence so the children could feel
the sheep’s wool. “They’re really fuzzy and cute,” said Jenna. “The wool is oily on my hand but it’s soft,” said Jack. Gardner said the farm has 12 ewes and one ram (hornless). “I select my rams not to have horns,” he said. He explained to the visitors that the ewes always have twins, sometimes triplets. That can lead to a sheep population bomb, so the farm has to sell or trade the excess sheep to hold down the count to what the pasture will bear. Some they trade for hay with a farmer in Hanover County, he said.
