Shaping up at the YMCA By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com
Okay, what does everyone do when the New Year rolls around? They vow to get in shape, of course. And a lot of them manage to keep those good intentions in Goochland, with the help of the Goochland Family YMCA. Wellness Coordinator Allison Leynes said the Goochland Y hopes to be ready for the annual influx of current and new members eager to get back into shape. “We want to be prepared for them,” said Leynes last week. “We love it when a new person comes in to see us.” Leynes said several new programs are planned for early 2010. “Women on Weights,” or WOW, will help “demystify strength training for women,” said Leynes, dispelling the myths and erroneous information that block women from experiencing the health benefits of strength training. It will run for six weeks. Another new offering planned for early 2010 will be called “N.e.w. You, (Nutrition, Exercise, and Wellness for You)” an eight-week course in a classroom setting designed around health and nutrition. Participants will have the opportunity to build fitness and nutrition programs geared toward their individual goals and needs, track their progress, and learn about general wellness topics, such as the role of stress on health, the latest research on weight-loss management, exersee YMCA > page 3
