Though a number of protests have been held in Goochland since the shooting death of Charlottesville resident Xzavier Hill by two Virginia State Police officers on Jan. 9, almost all have ended without incident. Now, however, a feud between a local business owner and Hill’s family will be headed to court. On March 8, Hill’s mother, Hill LaToya Benton, was one of several people ticketed for trespassing on the property of Tom’s Auto Service on River Road in the courthouse area, after a confrontation with owner see Feud > 2

Feud continued from >1 Tom Porter. Porter, in turn, will soon appear in court to face charges that he verbally abused LaTonya Snow, LaToya Benton’s sister. The infractions come after weeks of back and forth between the two sides, though Porter claims he does not recall cursing at anyone. He said on Monday that, in his mind, tensions came to a head when he confronted protestors who were near his business. Porter’s shop at 2952 River Road is located almost directly in front of the Goochland Courthouse and Sheriff ’s Office complex, where protestors have staged several demonstrations in recent weeks. Porter says he asked them why they were back again, since the state police dashcam video they had been demanding to be released of Hill’s shooting had just been made public. “They said ‘We want justice,’” Porter recalls. He says he then told them that he felt justice had been served, and that if Hill had not fled from officers and then pulled a gun he would not have been killed. Porter said he doesn’t have
an issue with protesting in general, but has been angered by what he describes as the inconvenience caused to residents and business owners by demonstrators repeatedly impeding traffic. On at least one occasion, he said, local law enforcement closed down River Road due to protests and prevented him and his staff from getting to work. Porter said he knows the pro-police and pro-gun flags he has flying in front of his shop may have angered demonstrators, but he insisted Monday that he is not a racist as Hill’s family and their supporters have charged. “I believe in what’s right and what’s wrong,” Porter said. “It’s sad the boy got shot, but he was in the wrong.” Hill’s family has maintained from the beginning that the 18-year-old never aimed a gun at the Virginia State Troopers who initially attempted to pull him over for speeding on I-64 in the early morning hours of Jan. 9. As the dashcam footage showed, Hill refused to pull over and led officers on a fourminute chase reaching speeds of up to 120 mph. He then attempted to make a U-turn and became stuck in the medi-
an. As officers approached his vehicle with guns drawn, both allege Hill pointed a weapon at one of them. They opened fire, fatally wounding Hill. On Tuesday morning, LaTonya Snow said she decided to file the complaint against Porter after he harassed her and several other women as they walked near his shop. Snow says Porter has directed racial slurs at her and other demonstrators, mocked the Black Lives Matter movement and accused them of trespassing when they were not on his property. She said she believes that it was Porter’s intention to lure her and others onto his property so that he could then charge them with trespassing. She also insisted Tuesday that she and other demonstrators are not in Goochland to cause pain or disrupt lives. They want the community to know that they are simply trying to correct what they see as a broken system, and are exercising their First Amendment rights. “A mother is hurting, and that is why we’re here,” Snow said. “We’re not going to leave until we get justice. We came here to cause some good trouble, and we are still here.”

Kim Bergmark-Hill, shown with her brother Kurt Bergmark, left, and father Richard Bergmark, describes the planned Crane and Clover Retreat as a way for her family to be able to finally be together after years of living in separate parts of the country.
Retreat continued from >1 a nature-focused retreat space for corporate events and other similar gatherings. A number of neighboring property owners, however, see a very different picture. Shortly after BergmarkHill shared her plan with Goochland County Planning Commissioners on March 4, in the hopes of securing the group’s support for a Conditional Use Permit (CUP), a handful of residents used the public comment period to voice concerns about everything from the plan’s potential impact on groundwater and nearby wells to the increased traffic from those visiting the property. Because Bergmark-Hill’s land is currently zoned only for agricultural use, any kind of business use requires a CUP approved by the county Board of Supervisors. And although the CUP would require BergmarkHill to strictly monitor activities that might negatively impact her neighbors — or risk having the permit revoked — at least 73 of those neighbors have signed a petition urging county leaders to deny the CUP.
“It is not our mission to prevent the family from reaching their dream,” said Goochland resident Marjorie Mayo, who lives near the site of the proposed retreat. “We all want to be good neighbors, but at the same time neighbors have invested in their homes and property because of the peaceful tranquility that is found in this beautiful rural area. And we have many concerns about the impact the proposed CUP will have on the community.” In addition to concerns about water quality and traffic, Mayo pointed out that many of Bergmark-Hill’s neighbors feel there is simply not enough space on the property for the six cabins and three yurts that would be allowed under the CUP. And although BergmarkHill has consistently presented the planned venture — set to be called Crane and Clover Retreat — as one that would offer a calming, high-end experience for the maximum 32 guests allowed at one time, Mayo and others say noise pollution, ATV-riding, drunk driving and litter remain high on the list of potential problems they fear should the CUP be approved by the board.
One resident suggested that the expected increase in prescription drugs used by well-heeled visitors could even threaten the local water-supply. Bergmark-Hill did have at least one person speak out in support of the plan: Local farm owner Crystal Neilson-Hall pointed out that, as an example of agritourism, Crane and Clover would offer exactly the kind of low-impact economic boost the county needs. Ultimately, Planning Commissioners appeared to agree with her. District 2 Commissioner Matt Brewer noted that he had concerns about restricting the rights of property owners to use their land, though he added that he did wish the plan had been brought to the county’s attention sooner. Commission Chairman John Myers said he thought Bergmark-Hill and her representatives had done a “great job” addressing the concerns of surrounding property owners. Ultimately the Commission voted in favor of the plan, although final approval must come from the Board of Supervisors. They are expected to take up

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor
Return to ‘normal’ especially important for seniors By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Admittedly, for many, it’s been a long, tough year —that’s not exactly breaking news. From business owners to teachers to everyday working parents, many Americans feel as though they are finally beginning to come around after a long and particularly strange and unsettling dream. Perhaps no one in our community has been hit quite as had this year as our senior residents, many of whom have wisely followed the directives of public health officials and stuck to strict social distancing, mask wearing, and even self-imposed isolation inside their homes. While some eschewed the advice, others were simply not at liberty to do so. One of the most heartbreaking moments I can recall from the past 12 months was when a friend’s father contracted COVID-19 while
residing at an assisted living facility. Having been barred from in-person visits due to fears of the virus, my friend had to say his final goodbye over the phone. While my life went on relatively unchanged aside from a few less entertainment options and having to remember my mask, he — like so many others — was robbed of the ability to comfort a loved one in their final moments, a cruel and devastating blow. Even when COVID wasn’t quite so punishing, it was still taking a terrible toll on families. You may have seen a story last week about the grandmother in New York who had not been able to hug her granddaughter for over a year. Once the grandmother had received the vaccine and her doctor had given the OK, the embrace she shared with her granddaughter was as joyful as any you will likely ever see. I’m not crying, you’re crying.
Around these parts, our seniors have had to endure the loss of cherished social activities and volunteer opportunities, as well as the constant unease that came with a public health threat the likes of which had not been seen in over 100 years. Now, as we slowly move out of the pandemic and towards a more normal life, there is great hope that pieces of those old routines can begin to be reclaimed. To the many doctors, nurses and volunteers who have worked tirelessly to vaccinate local senior residents and allow them to return to their lives — and their loved ones — thank you. It may be a bit too soon for a group hug, but we’re getting closer every day. * * * Are you looking for more information on receiving the COVID19 vaccine? Goochland residents who are interested in receiving the

Several snags, surprises and —finally— a shot By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
Like thousands of other Virginians, I was beginning to believe the call informing me I’d been approved for a COVID-19 vaccination would never come. And it didn’t.
The good news arrived in the form of an email from the CDC (Centers for Disease Control), notifying me that my number had finally come up and it was time to schedule an appointment. After several attempts to schedule were met with crashing websites or blank pages, I finally scheduled

my slot for the sought-after vaccines. I’d listened carefully to news reports that described a level of frustration with the registration system that raised sufficient alarm, so I felt I was well prepared for the process. For days, I heard that recipients would not be able to choose which
vaccine they preferred, and citizens should not be choosey and take the first shot that was available. So, I was a bit surprised when the first question on the CDC registration form was “Which vaccine do you want?” There were three see Vaccine > 7

Letters to the Editor Proposed solution to trash problem won’t be popular — but it might actually work Dear Editor, I read with interest the featured article from Editor, Roslyn Ryan on our roadside trash problem in Goochland. Yes, indeed we have a problem. I along with my neighbors have routine clean-up days for the northern half of Manakin Road. We have been doing this for 10 plus years. My own research and now being an experienced litter picker upper says the “preaching to the choir” approach is fruitless. Letters to the Editor, signs, and fines are either not seen or disregarded. Add this to the difficulty in catching these wayward individuals, and it seems like an intractable problem. So, what can we do? My proposal is to require all property owners to pick up the litter on the side of any road that abuts their property. This will help us in a number of ways. The property owners will not like doing this and this will translate to those who live in that particular home and others they know. Over time the folks who carelessly toss trash on our roads will be chastened by either having to pick it up themselves or recall the diatribe from someone in their own home. Yes, this is a burden and punishes the innocent— sorry. The other advantage is the trash will get picked up on a more frequent basis than the once or twice a year road clean up performed from our volunteers. I have noticed Manakin Road stays cleanest for the most time when we leave the VDOT Orange bags by the side of the road for a few days. I presume the visible sign that someone cared enough to pick up this road leaves a positive impression on at least some, thereby proving the adage that dirty dishes beget more dirty dishes.

Middle school students enjoy ‘glowing’ event Understanding that the COVID-related challenges of the past year have been tough on both students and teachers, two Goochland Middle School teachers recently put together a unique, highenergy program aimed at energizing their Physical Education students. Thanks to the two-week program created by teachers Eric Hansen and Jessica Alter, GMS students got the chance to participate in a blacklight workout and cardio drumming activity. The event was held from March 1-12 and was a tremendous hit with the students. Contributed photo

through the process once and the J&J shot offered that option. Appointments were scheduled according to what vaccine you selected, but all varieties offered slots within days of the email notice. I received confirmation from the CDC regarding my appointment with instructions on what to bring and where to be. Within minutes, I began receiving notification from VDH (Virginia Department of Health) that I had been selected to receive a vaccine and should schedule through its website. Since I had the confirmation, I ignored these emails and patiently waited for my appointment day to arrive. Shortly before leaving for the appointment, I checked email and noticed an alert from CDC informing me that I had not completed my registration and an important questionnaire form was missing from my application. After several attempts, I
accessed the CDC site and filled out the short questionnaire, submitted it, and ran out the door heading for the Raceway, and, finally, a real defense against a virus that had caused disruption for all who encountered it during the past year seemed within reach. A cool wind interrupted the first signs the of pre-spring day as I lined up outside the iconic red barn at the old fairgrounds, joining hundreds of other seniors who were lucky enough to get the call. “Everyone take one of these forms and fill it out before you enter,” the man in fatigues shouted as he distributed a single page of questions. I mentioned that I already had filled out the same form online and submitted it, but the cordial soldier told me that was for federal registration and I was at a state-run vaccination center. Now, I could have retorted and explained I didn’t register at the state site, but got my
appointment on the federal site, but this guy was working hard enough without my input. It took only seconds to check no on all the boxes and gain entry into a long line that wound through the old barn, back and forth like waiting for a ride at Kings Dominion. After an insignificant wait, I was directed to a station where an off-duty Henrico fireman prepared to give me the shot. “Did you answer no to all the questions on the form?” he asked. “Yes, twice,” I responded. Seconds later, the deed was done and I became one of many seniors who have been vaccinated. With it came a sense of security that I can only hope will envelop a nation as more and more of us take the plunge. I also left with a renewed respect for the many public servants and other volunteers who made the clinic run smoothly and provided more than just medicine to the residents they encountered.

Survey says: Pollinators prefer native species Widely beloved cone flower is a wild wonder By Virginia McCown Contributing Writer
Beauty is in the eye of the pollinator. The top pollinator-preferred cone flowers (Echinacea) were exclusively single flowered species and cultivars, according to a study conducted outside Wilmington, Delaware. The bees have spoken. After three years of evaluation, the Mt. Cuba Center released Echinacea for the Mid-Atlantic Region, its latest research report evaluating 75 species and cultivars of the native perennial. Detailed reports from this—as well as an earlier Echinacea trial— are
available on the website: mtcubacenter.org/trialgarden. “Loved by both urban and rural gardeners, elegant Echinacea are a low maintenance wildflower for perennial and pollinator gardens, “ said Sam Hoadley, manager of the horticulture research program located in Hockessin, DE. The selected plants were studied and ranked based on their floral display, health and hardiness, and attractiveness for pollinators and other beneficial insects. Echinacea purpurea ‘Pica Bella’ earned highest honors in the study as well as top marks in Mt. Cuba’s previous Echinacea trial conducted during 2008-2009. In addition to its horticultural merit, ‘Pica Bella’ was also preferred by insect pollinators. ‘Pica Bella’ was also easy to grow in a wide range of garden settings.

Double flowered Echinacea varieties represent significant breakthroughs in coneflower breeding. They’ve become very popular because of their showy flowers and extended bloom times, yet the double flowered varieties remain scorned by their local insect pollinators. The researchers found that the vast majority of the pollinators that visited the Echinacea in the Mt. Cuba trial were bees and wasps with butterflies making up only five percent of total visitations. Mt. Cuba’s Pollinator Watch team, a trained group of volunteers, observed and recorded the number of pollinating insects visiting each of the coneflowers in 2018 and 2019.

this popular native plant? Echinacea are sun loving perennials requiring at least six hours of sun per day to thrive. Most begin to bloom in late spring and continue until frost if deadheaded. Deadheading is the process of cutting off flowers that have finished blooming. This causes the plants to put energy into growth and not seed formation. If you choose not to deadhead, the seeds become an excellent source of fall and winter food for finches and other wild birds. Echinacea purpurea varieties grow in a variety of soils and are drought hardy. They’ll even naturalize into the landscape. Ratibida columnifera, commonly known as a Mexican Hat or Prairie Coneflower, is a also a native perennial but not related to Echinacea.
Germination and transplanting Like most perennials, if growing from seed, don’t expect your plants to bloom in the first year. While you can have some success with-
out it, most Echinacea seeds require cold stratification for 30 days to germinate well. Cold stratification is a method of replicating winter’s cold temperatures. This can be easily accomplished by storing the seeds for the specified time in a freezer. Coneflower seeds take about 20 days to sprout. The ideal soil temperature should be about 70 degrees F, and the soil medium should be kept moist. Once seedlings have grown to about three inches tall, thin them and harden them off for a week before placing them outside. Transplant only when the danger of frost has passed and the soil temperature is at least 60 degrees F.
ventilated area to dry or placed in a dehydrator. As a medicine, Echinacea is legendary. It can be brewed into a healing tea, ground into a fine powder or made into tinctures.
Harvest
Harvest Echinacea blossoms by cutting the stems for cut flower arrangements. By cutting and harvesting, you encourage all-season blooming. For medicinal use, cut the flowers at the stem below the first set of leaves. Leaves for tea can be cut a few at a time from each plant as needed. It’s best to collect Echinacea roots late in the growing season. Second-year roots are best. Keep in mind the entire plant need not be sacrificed. Goochland crews rescue stranded couple from James River By Roslyn Ryan Editor
With warmer temperatures and later sunsets, many area residents will soon be heading out the enjoy the state’s rivers, lakes and beaches. As one couple found out last week, however, a day on the water can have
serious consequences if proper precautions aren’t taken. The couple was enjoying the James River on a jet boat on the evening of March 10, when they got stuck on some rocks. Stranded for several hours, they were eventually rescued by Goochland Fire and Rescue crews, after rescuers launched from Watkins
Landing in Powhatan and travelled upriver to locate them. While this incident ultimately ended without injury, each year brings with it reports of those who are not so fortunate. Deaths and serious injury can easily result from poor planning or carelessness in and around the water, and a fun day on
the river can quickly turn tragic. Here are a few safety tips to remember, courtesy of the Friends of the James River Park: Wear lifejackets on the river and don’t swim or boat alone. Use caution when walking in the river. The river bottom is uneven, so it’s still possible to get in over your
Kayaking offers even novice paddlers chance to enjoy workout on the water Contributed report Kayaking is a water sport that can be beneficial to the mind and body. Just about anyone willing to spend a day on the water can benefit from learning about kayaking and how to get started with this rewarding activity. The history of kayaking is interesting. The word “kayak” means “hunter’s boat,” and the Inuit used to rely on these small vessels to catch food by sneaking up on their prey from the water’s edge. Some people still hunt and fish from their kayaks, but many are happy to use them for sightseeing and exercising. “Paddlesports are increasing in popularity among Americans who desire to connect with the outdoors,” said Christine Fanning, executive director of The Outdoor Foundation. The Outdoor Foundation and The Coleman Company, Inc., found in a Special Report on Paddlesports that 21.7 million Americans enjoyed paddling on rivers, lakes, streams, and other waterways in 2014, the most recent year for which data is available. Paddlesports include canoeing, rafting, kayaking, and stand-up paddling. Learning how to kayak does not involve a significant initial financial investment. The outdoor experts at REI say there’s a good chance a novice kayaker will not go out and buy a boat immediately. It’s important to first get a feel for the sport and then go from there. Although it’s not absolutely necessary, it’s recommended that novices take paddling lessons to hone their kayaking skills. Learning the proper technique can help people avoid strain on their neck and back
head even when the river level is low. If you are swept up by a rapid, float feet first to protect your head until you can swim free. Stay away from dams. Portage your boat to avoid their dangerous hydraulics. Wear closed-toe shoes in the water.
Swimming safely should always remain top priority for both children and adults Spending time in and around water is a favorite pastime for adults and children. But even though water play can be exciting, it also can be dangerous. Drowning is the leading cause of death for children between the ages of one and four and the fifth leading cause of accidental death overall in the United States. It is essential for everyone to play it safe when in and around water. Here are nine ways to do just that.

A 2014 survey found that 21.7 million Americans enjoyed paddling on rivers, lakes, streams, and other waterways. Paddlesports include canoeing, rafting, kayaking, and stand-up paddling. Novices are urged to practice on calm waters.
and safeguard their arms from fatigue. Novices should practice on calm waters until their technique is honed. Lakes are a great place to learn, as rivers and places with mild currents can overwhelm those new to the sport. One of the easiest ways to get introduced to kayaking is to go with an experienced paddler or tour company. Such companies charge a set price for an excursion that will provide transportation to the drop site as well as the equipment needed for the voyage. Tours may include travel down several miles of a relatively calm
waterway, allowing novice kayakers to get a feel for paddling and take in the scenery. Getting in and out of a kayak can be challenging for beginners. The resource Kayakpaddling.net offers helpful illustrations and animated tutorials about entering and exiting kayaks as well as paddling techniques and safety. Kayakers should bring some essentials along. A dry pack can keep electronics, food and equipment dry. Remember to wear sunscreen and a hat to keep safe from the sun. A life vest also is essential. — MetroCreative
Avoid swimming or boating in high running water, making sure to always check conditions before starting. Never dive or jump into unfamiliar or shallow water, advises Seattle ChildrenÕs Hospital. Obey barriers, such as markings for deeper ends in pools, fencing around pools and ropes in open waters. Barriers help reduce the risk of drowning considerably. Life jackets should be worn by swimmers of all ages, especially during water sports like boating and jet skiing. The Red Cross says strong swimming skills can significantly reduce the risk of drowning. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, most children age four and older can learn to swim. Enroll in a family swim class to brush up on skills. Have eyes on children at all times when they are in or around the water, both inside the home and outdoors. Employ “touch supervision,” which means always remaining in arm’s reach of the child. Swim only in public swimming areas that are protected by lifeguards. Do not mix alcohol and water recreation. Remain sober when boating, swimming or supervising children who are swimming. Drains in pools and spas can be deadly. The Mayo Clinic says to keep children away from drains, as body parts and hair can become trapped by the strong suction. Water safety is a priority all year long, but gets even more attention every summer. A few simple safety measures can prevent many drownings.— MetroCreative

Woodson’s TDs lead Bulldogs past Liberty By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor
Jason Woodson was Goochland’s scout offensive player of the week. He had a great week, getting a bunch of contested footballs against his team’s defensive backs. “He just competed, which was awesome to see,” said Goochland head football coach Alex Fruth, who added that it “gave us a little confidence that, ‘hey, this kid can do some things.’” Woodson got the opportunity to play at wide receiver in Saturday’s road game at Liberty High School, and in his role as a second-team linebacker, he was also able to rotate onto the field on defense. He scored both of his team’s touchdowns. His quarterback C.J. Towles threw him one – a gem of a 73-yarder – and Liberty threw him the other: a 40-yard pick-six. “There’s a kid that took the opportunity presented to him and ran with it,” Fruth said. “It was awesome.” Behind Woodson’s two scores, his Class 3 Bulldogs fended off the larger school of Liberty (Bealeton) 14-12 to remain unbeaten (3-0) at the halfway mark of the regular season. “It’s a nice victory to have,” Fruth said Saturday evening. “To play any of those schools that are bigger than us – and they’re probably about…400 or 500 students bigger than us – to play those kinds of teams, and to go out there, compete, and beat them, that’s a big deal for us.” After a back-and-forth, scoreless first quarter, Liberty broke through in the top of the second with a 15-yard touchdown pass and kept a 7-0 lead
lead. The Eagles in the fourth quarter landed a 31-yard kick through the uprights, and Goochland, pinned near its own end zone on fourth and long with about 1:38 left in regulation, elected to take a safety, with the idea of kicking the ball down field and forcing the Eagles to march the field against the Bulldogs’ defense. The safety tightened Goochland’s lead over Liberty to 14-12, but Goochland’s defense clinched the game via a stop on fourth down with about 38 seconds remaining. “It was a physical game,” Fruth said Saturday. “That was a good football team that we played today. It’s physical – big, strong kids – it was good to have a game like that at this part of the season.” Will Stratton was in on 14 tackles, including a sack, and caught an interception. Anthony Holland and De’Andre Robinson were each in on 10 tackles, with Robinson getting a tackle for loss, and Isaiah Walker and Haiden Mccourt were each in on nine. Kai Burton and Enrique Alvarez each delivered a sack and Eyan Pace had a tackle for loss. Fruth said that Saturday’s game was “a great test for who we are,” and that it showed the Bulldogs where they need to get better. “We’ve got to improve up front on the offensive line; we’ve got to keep making strides – and that comes with Photo by Joel C. Bulldogs win first 4 matches in straight sets By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor
Featuring experienced returners and talented newcomers, Goochland volleyball is following up a 22-1 season and a state semifinals appearance in 2019 with a dominant opening stretch, winning its first four matches of the 2020-21 campaign in straight sets. But after their fall season was delayed to this spring because of the current pandemic, the Bulldogs ultimately are just really excited to be able to play. “At the end of the day - I tell them all the time before our game: Let’s just get out there and have fun. That’s the point. That’s why we’re all here,” Goochland head coach Rachel Jacobsen said Thursday. “We’re just glad
to be out here. That’s, at the end of the day, what matters.” While the Bulldogs lost several talented Class of 2020 leaders, they have brought back a battle-tested core of key contributors from that state semifinalist season, including seniors Taylor Michaels and Megan Harlow, juniors Blair Bussells and Nova Wonderling, and sophomores Nicole Brown and Nina Smith. The Bulldogs also brought up a few players to practice with the team at the end of their 2019 campaign. “They know each other pretty well. They’ve been working well together,” Jacobsen said. In Thursday’s 3-0 victory over Cumberland (25-11, 25-19, 25-15), both Smith and Wonderling showcased the hammering arms that have been

stepped up as the unit’s defensive specialist, and senior Harlow, who had 3 kills in Thursday’s win, is once again bringing her consistency to the Bulldogs. Jacobsen noted that Harlow currently holds one of the highest hitting percentages on this year’s team. Goochland earlier in the week defeated Central Lunenburg 3-0 (25-10, 25-12, 25-16). Wonderling had 7 kills, 7 aces and two assists, Smith had 7 kills, Ford had 5 kills, Michaels had 4 kills, and Brown had 24 assists, 2 kills, and 2 aces. Goochland will host Nottoway on Thursday at 6 p.m. and Powhatan on Monday at 7 p.m. before playing at Amelia on Tuesday at 7 p.m. and hosting Central Lunenburg on Thursday at 7 p.m.

continued from >12 have a ton of experience, and we’re only going to get better…’ but now we can really evaluate and see where we’re at in that process.” After winning its first two games via shutout, Goochland showcased resiliency in overtaking the opposing team and staying ahead in a close matchup. “At some point in the season, you’ve got to have a moment where everybody’s realized: ‘Hey, our backs are up against the wall. We’ve got to fight really hard for this right here,’” Fruth said. “The ball’s not always going to bounce our way, and when the breaks don’t work our way and we go out there and we rise to the occasion…that’s a big deal, because it gives the idea to the kids that: ‘Hey, we can do this,’ even when things just aren’t clicking, aren’t just

taken on new positions this season, and they’ve been excelling. Bussells is applying her quickness to the role of Libero, and Brown currently holds the position of Goochland’s primary setter, a responsibility that she first picked up during this past club volleyball season. Brown, who is 5-foot-9, also brings height to the setter position. She tallied up 19 assists, 3 kills, and 6 aces against Cumberland on Thursday. Michaels is the team’s floor captain this year and brings versatility, steadiness, “and a really good personality” on top of being a good player, according to Jacobsen. “She’s a rock for the team,” Jacobsen said. “It’s really great to have her back this year.” Junior Audrey Dolan has

working, and that’s going to happen at some point down the road in a big game against good teams. You’re not going to win every series. “That’ll give us some serious self-confidence in terms of, when our backs are up against the wall, that we’re going to be
able to ride this out and be able to bounce back.” Goochland’s home opener will also be its Homecoming game. The Bulldogs will host future Jefferson District opponent Orange County on March 19 at 6:30 p.m. at Goochland High School.
Goochland’s golf team continued its strong start to the season by defeating both Cumberland (163-209) and Amelia County (165-204) this past week. The Bulldogs with the wins improved to 3-0. Sophomore Matthew Floegel netted twin scores of 38 to earn medalist honors in both matches. Senior Kyle Goff was the team’s second lowest scorer for the week, netting a 39 versus Amelia to improve upon a score of 43 versus Cumberland. Freshman Luke Manno shot twin totals of 41 in both matches, and freshman Will Gravely added a score of 41 against Cumberland. State AG’s Office pledges to help family find answers after police shooting Jan. 9 shooting ruled unanimously that the troopers were justified in using deadly force. Goochland Commonwealth’s Attorney D. Michael Caudill, who oversaw the grand jury proceedings, made the grand jury report public, along with numerous exhibits and a copy of a police dashcam video that captured much of the incident. In a letter dated Tuesday to Herring, the state NAACP’s president, Robert Barnette Jr., said his organization “must express its concern regarding the investigation” into Hill’s death. “We believe that now, more than ever, it is imperative that the

The Virginia State Conference of the NAACP has asked Attorney General Mark Herring to review the shooting of 18-year-old Xzavier Hill, who was killed during a confrontation with two Virginia State Police troopers in Goochland County after a highspeed pursuit on Interstate 64. A spokeswoman for Herring said his office will look into the matter. The NAACP’s request came less than two weeks after a multijurisdictional grand jury that was convened to investigate the circumstances of the TUESDAY EVENING 4 PM 4:30

because the affected families and communities must have confidence in the outcomes and decisions made,” Gomer said in a statement. “We understand the Hill family, NAACP, and members of the community want more answers than they have received, and we will explore all options to help get them.” Gomer acknowledged that the case is somewhat unique since a grand jury already has reviewed the evidence and determined that the officers were not criminally liable. “But we have committed to the NAACP that we will explore any potential avenue for helping to ensure justice and transparency,” she said.

He added that the NAACP “believes that it should be the reasonable expectation that the evidence related to the death of Mr. Xzavier Hill be given the attention of your office, not only because it involves Virginia State Police; but also because the current social and political climate has helped foster a negative perception by the African American community that Virginia’s history of inequity and injustice will continue to follow us into

Richmond area health districts expand Phase 1b vaccinations Contributed report
Starting March 8, more Phase 1b individuals in the Richmond metro area are eligible to receive COVID-19 vaccines for COVID-19 vaccines. Additional frontline essential workers and individuals aged 16-64 with certain medical conditions or disabilities that increase risk of severe COVID19 illness are now eligible to receive COVID-19 vaccines, dependent on vaccine supply and appointment availability. Scheduling of appointments began March 8. “Our communities have been eagerly anticipating this COVID-19 vaccine,” said Amy Popovich, nurse manager at Richmond and Henrico Health Districts. “This is momentous for us; we’re one step closer to

having all of our communities vaccinated.” After receiving fewer COVID-19 vaccine supplies than expected from the federal government earlier this year, Richmond area health districts entered into a restricted Phase 1b. Until today, Phase 1b vaccines were only offered to the first three categories of frontline essential workers (police/fire/hazmat, homeless shelter/correctional facility workers, and childcare/K-12 school staff) and adults aged 65 and older. Richmond and Henrico Health Districts, Chesterfield Health District, and Chickahominy Health District have collectively decided to expand Phase 1b after receiving an increased supply of COVID-19 vaccines.
“In order to save as many lives as possible and stop the spread of COVID-19, we need to get vaccines into people’s arms as quickly and safely as possible” explained Dr. Tom Franck, Chickahominy Health District Director. “The increasing supply of vaccine and expansion of Phase 1b in our region is so encouraging because it means achieving these goals that much more quickly.” “Our frontline essential workers have served us all through difficult circumstances over the course of the past year in this pandemic,” said Dr. Alexander Samuel, director of Chesterfield Health District. “We hope the vaccine brings them a sense of security and relief.”
