After several months of work by a committee of stakeholders including students, parents, teachers and school administrators, the Goochland County Public Schools’ homework policy is set to get a major overhaul ahead of students returning to class in August. On June 8, county school board members approved the revised policy document on first reading, with several board members noting that the changes would help ensure equity for all students and also offer teachers improved guidelines for assigning homework. According to GCPS Assistant Superintendent of Instruction Stephen Geyer, the updates to the homework policy are intended to both modernize and expand on a directive that was previously only around half a page long and offered only a basic framework for what constituted appropriate homework. The updated policy, Geyer explained, goes into far greater detail on what the policy drafters refer to as “effective homework design,”

GEF, Rotary announce essay contest winners Contributed report
The Goochland Education Foundation and Goochland Rotary collaborated to sponsor the annual essay contest for 4th and 5th grade Goochland County School students. The purpose of the annual essay contest is to encourage students to strengthen key 21st century skills. Each year there is a different topic, and this school year provided a great opportunity to hear from the students about the changes the schools made during this pandemic and what changes they would like to remain
Hill Top continued from >1 and how federal relief efforts — including the American Rescue Plan (ARP), which Spanberger voted to pass last March — have helped provided much-needed assistance. During the visit, Spanberger also heard about Hill Top Distillery’s experience with one key component of the ARP, the Restaurant Revitalization Fund. “Since the pandemic began, I have heard from so many small business owners who are hurting,” said Spanberger. “The hope is that the Restaurant Revitalization Fund is going to provide the targeted assistance they need to get through this last phase of the recovery.” Spanberger was joined during the roundtable discussion by Brockenbrough and her husband John; Barry Haneberg, Founder & Distiller, Virago Spirits, Richmond; Chuck Miller, Master Distiller & Owner, Belmont Farm Distillery, Culpeper; Jeanette Miller, Owner, Belmont Farm Distillery, Culpeper; Rick Wasmund, CEO & Master Distiller, Copper Fox Distillery, Sperryville and Williamsburg; and Jessica Brady, Director of
when the pandemic is over. Of the 60 submissions, the winners were First Place Winner Milo Lacy, 4th Grade, Randolph Elementary School; Second Place Winner A’Laiyah Mayo, 4th Grade, Byrd Elementary School; and Third Place Winner, Ethan Cosby, 4th Grade, Randolph Elementary School. Cyndy Brown, Executive Director of the Goochland Education Foundation, stated that “the judges were very impressed with the thoughtfulness and compassion expressed by the students —
not to mention how much they like having math first thing in the morning and even wish it were a bit longer! It was a very competitive process. We extend our congratulations to the students and their teachers for teaching them so well!” Jay Shively, President of the Rotary Club of Goochland said “we provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through our fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders. One of our seven causes is supporting educa-
tion and our partnership with the Goochland Education Foundation to provide this essay contest for students in the Goochland County Public Schools is just another example of our proud support of education in our community”. The Goochland Education Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization providing or expanding on innovative, visionary educational experiences designed to enrich and maximize the learning potential of Goochland County Public School students.
Federal Government Relations, Distilled Spirits Council of the United States. “The Seventh District’s small businesses are the drivers of our local economy, and I am proud to see these businesses show strong signs of recovery as we rebuild from the COVID-19 crisis,” said Spanberger. “In Congress, I have been a fervent supporter of critical relief programs like the Paycheck Protection Program and the Restaurant Revitalization Fund, because I have personally heard and seen how these efforts have kept the doors open and dreams alive for so many family-owned businesses in our communities.” “We greatly appreciate that Representative Spanberger took the time to come out to Hill Top Distillery to hear from Virginia distillers about their experiences and challenges throughout the pandemic,” said Christine LoCascio, Chief of Public Policy, Distilled Spirits Council of the United States. “Across Virginia and the entire country, many small distilleries are struggling after a difficult year. Many had their tasting rooms and tours closed for months on end, and fewer Americans enjoyed a cocktail
out, traveled or gathered for events. We urge Congress to provide additional economic support for the hospitality industry so that distilleries can get back to generating jobs and supporting their local economies.” Since taking office in 2019, Spanberger has taken a number of steps to support area brewers and distillers. She was a cosponsor of and voted to pass the Craft Beverage Modernization and Tax Reform Act, which was signed into law in December 2020 and made permanent the federal excise tax cut on distilled spirts that was enacted in 2017. Last year, Spanberger joined a bipartisan group of her colleagues in urging Speaker Pelosi and Minority Leader McCarthy to pass this legislation in the end-of-year funding agreement – particularly as brewers and distillers would’ve faced a significant increase in their federal excise taxes at a time when so many struggled to stay open and keep employees on the payroll. During a visit to Three Crosses Distilling Company in Powhatan County in August 2020, Spanberger spoke about changes required to help
Central Virginia businesses adapt and innovate in response to COVID-19 — including the need to extend and make permanent the federal excise tax cut. And in March 2020, Spanberger joined a bipartisan effort urging the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to cut red tape and allow producers of distilled spirits to continue manufacturing hand sanitizer with current supplies in response to shortages caused by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

It’s show time: After long wait, concerts returning By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Well, it’s finally happening: After over a year of dark venues, concerts are finally coming back to Central Virginia. As someone whose idea of a good time these days is a swaying hammock, a gentle breeze and a good book, I admit it takes a little work to remember back to those days when my idea of
fun was a bit . . . louder. The other day, while cleaning out a coat closet (not, for the record, my idea of good time), I came across an old t-shirt that had fallen behind a stack of long-forgotten boxes. Upon further inspection, I recognized it as a concert t-shirt, one I hadn’t seen in decades. It had apparently been back there for quite a while (did I mention I tend to avoid cleaning out closets?) but it took only a few seconds for the memories attached to

When I arrived at Southwood College in the fall of 1970, one of my first meaningful decisions, in other words, was something that did not involve scheduling of classes or purchasing books, involved alcohol. Although North Carolina allowed the purchase of beer and wine at age 18, the matter was left for localities to decide, and the institution I had selected was situated in the middle of a dry as a bone county. For those of us born south of the Mason-Dixon Line, Sampson County was culture shock for sure, but all of the seemingly strange customs and quirks seemed somewhat familiar to those of us raised in the South. The decision on which direction we would take to obtain alcohol involved two distinct choices, both of equal distance and quality of road. The road to the northern county line was a curvy twolane highway that tested the most sober of drivers and proved too ambitious for many students following a Wednesday night blowout at the Village Inn. Or, you could drive the same distance west to a confluence of humanity called Fayetteville, a venue that offered more than just watered down beer and cheap wine. I can only compare my first trip to downtown Fayetteville during that period to a feeling I had when I first disembarked a plane in a foreign county. Everything was new and vibrant, a neon haze of crowded sidewalks of slimy balkers enticing soldiers to enter one of the many establishments

Murders continued from >6 near Hay Street. My arrival in the Fayetteville area coincided with a well-publicized inquiry that involved the murder of a young mother and her two girls at Fort Bragg, one of the busiest military bases in the United States made even more frantic by a full-scale war raging in Southeast Asia. The news of Captain Jeffrey MacDonald and the accusations surrounding him could have easily been lost in the shuffle, but, for college students with an ample amount of spare time, the case seemed intriguing; and many of our trips to the surreal atmosphere of a city like no other ended with a visit to the scene of the crime. There was little question in our minds as to who the killer might be, and apparently some military investigators also were convinced Jeffrey MacDonald had murdered his family. A tribunal of military judges saw it differently and MacDonald was exonerated, left the military, and moved to California to begin a new life. MacDonald told investigators that hippies had entered his apartment, killed his family in a most gruesome manner while inflicting only superficial wounds on the young Army doctor. He recalled a woman with a floppy hat, long blond hair and boots being one of the attackers.
any teenage problems we might have had were momentarily suspended and replaced by the sheer joy of being part of it all. As I mentioned, I don’t attend too many concerts any more. But as live music finally makes a return to the Commonwealth, I find it thrilling to know that the opportunity will once again be there for those
7
Most of us were surprised when the Army found no evidence and dismissed the charges later that fall. Thanks in large part to the relentless efforts of the murdered wife’s stepfather, Alfred Kassab, MacDonald was eventually arrested for the murders, convicted and sentenced for the inexplicably cruel slayings. In the more than four decades since the murders, MacDonald has exhausted his appeals and has made numerous unsuccessful attempts to reopen the case, still clinging to his story of a hippie attack and the woman in the floppy hat. My family recently watched a series on the MacDonald case that concluded he was possibly wrongly convicted and the murderers of two small innocent girls and their mother remain free, walking the streets of who knows what city. Most of the members of my family also were convinced by the documentary, but it did little to alter my long-held beliefs regarding MacDonald’s guilt. I never doubted it for a minute and still don’t. MacDonald is now 77 and recently asked a judge to issue a compassionate release that would allow him to spend the last years of his life in freedom. Evan Bernstine wins first state championship! By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor
BLACKSBURG – Since 2015, a Bernstine has won a Virginia High School League singles state championship every year that the full tennis seasons were held. Evan Bernstine extended that streak on Saturday. The Goochland High School boys tennis standout defeated York’s R.J. Novak 6-2, 6-1 and routed Abingdon’s Dillon McReynolds 6-0, 6-1 in the Class 3 state tournament to join his brothers and GHS alumni Chase and Ryan Bernstine in becoming a VHSL state champion. Starting off with his semifinal match at Virginia Tech, Evan spoke to being a little nervous – he didn’t sleep very well, he barely ate breakfast and the indoor courts were really fast, so it was hard to get a rhythm – but he was able to fight through that first match despite not playing his best, he said. Facing Novak in the semifinals, Evan served well, delivering several aces, and he was able to pull out the big points. The state finals were moved to the outdoor courts – which Evan spoke to liking more, as he gets more time to hit his heavy shots – and he got off to a really quick start. He rolled out a 6-0 first set in about 10 minutes and kept control through the second set. He stayed consistent in his serves and excelled at making his opponent earn the
point against him. Bernstine worked his patterns, got his opponent moving, played smart points and spoke to not giving up errors. “I was really happy with how I served and returned and everything in that final match,” Evan said. Evan not only went unbeaten (17-0) throughout the 2021 tennis season in singles, but he also never lost a set. Additionally, he never lost a singles game during the regular season or the regional tournament. The only four games he surrendered were in the state tournament, and no opponent won more than two games against him in a singles set this year. Evan’s brother Chase was able to come out and watch him become a state champion. “He’s really supportive; he’s always been so nice to me as the oldest brother, and I just couldn’t really ask for more from him because he sort of did everything this weekend – he took me to the matches, he took me to get lunch, he warmed up with me at 7 a.m.” Fittingly, Evan won his first title at the same tennis facility where both Chase and Ryan play as part of the Virginia Tech Men’s Tennis team. “I was really excited when I heard it was at Virginia Tech, because I love the Town of

BLACKSBURG – In Evan Bernstine’s first full varsity tennis season – and in Adam Webb’s last – the two Goochland High School standouts battled their way to the Class 3 boys tennis doubles state final, where they earned state runner-up honors in both their first and their last full year together as partners on the varsity court. “I’ve never been to a state Nick Vandeloecht/Goochland Gazette Goochland’s Adam Webb (from left) and Evan Bernstine earned Class 3 boys tennis state final – I mean, this guy will probably see a lot more,” Webb, runner-up honors in doubles, and Western Albemarle’s Bryce Duncan (from right) and Tobin Yates won the Class 3 boys tennis state doubles championship. a Class of 2021 GHS graduate,
said in reference to Bernstine, who is a rising junior. “It’s my senior year, so it was really fun getting out here. Great experience, even though we lost. We came back a little bit in the second set, but really great experience.” “It was awesome, because I didn’t know how Adam and I were going to do,” said Bernstine, who went on the win the Class 3 state singles championship the next day. “We struggled our first two matches…and then we got sort of crushed by Collegiate, so I didn’t know how it was going to go, but we really figured each
other out. We took some lessons together, and I’m excited with how we ended up playing, because I knew we were in that last match.” Webb and Bernstine reached the Class 3 state boys tennis doubles final by powering past York duo R.J. Novak and Aryan Prabhudesai 6-4, 6-1 in the semifinal round at Virginia Tech’s Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. Goochland walks-off 4-3 in 8 in regular season finale By Nick Vandeloecht Sports Editor
GOOCHLAND – Lockdown defense in both the middle innings and the top of the eighth – as well as a clutch 3-run rally in the sixth by the Bulldogs’ bats – paved the way for Goochland’s varsity baseball team to walk-off 4-3 over Amelia in its regular-season finale. “That was a good one,” said Goochland head baseball coach Wes Farkas. “It’s what we needed – kind of backing into the playoffs a little bit, but getting that win tonight, that was crucial for our guys.” The triumph marked a major turnaround for the Bulldogs, who earlier in the season had taken an 11-1 setback to Amelia. The win also helped ensure that the Bulldogs hosted the first round of regionals. “It felt really good to come out here, get this win – we needed it. We needed that home-game playoff game coming up on Monday; especially coming from all of our seniors, we really wanted a home playoff game,” Goochland senior Travis Lestyk, who walked in the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth, said after Goochland’s win over Amelia. “This was definitely a collective team effort, and I honestly couldn’t be any more proud of this team tonight, especially in the later innings.” Two key runners reached base for the Bulldogs in the sixth inning. Sophomore John Summitt safely made it to first when the third baseman briefly bobbled the ball before making the throw, and the officials ruled that the first baseman was off the bag when making the catch. Facing two outs, senior
Chris White took a walk, and then senior Ayden Doczi stepped up to bat. Seeing a fastball that the pitcher left up, the future VMI football player smashed the 2-2, 2-out pitch in a towering trajectory that carried the ball all the way up to the left-field fence, bringing home both Summitt and White. Doczi’s huge hit tied the game at 2-2. “I realized it just needed to happen – we were down 2-0, and we needed something to happen to get some life in the team,” Doczi said of his gametying double. “We got runners in scoring position, that was a must-have kind of hit, and he stepped up,” Farkas said. “That’s what you want: a clutch hitter, and he came through for us there.” Doczi added of the approach in that kind of situation: “Definitely keep your head level…it’s required, and I know that, here and there, it kind of leaves everyone – you get a little too high, a little too low – but you want to ride that roller coaster as even as possible, and, honestly, I’ve been taught: sit on a fastball, adjust to anything else, and he gave me a fastball I was able to hit.” Following Doczi, catcher Lestyk slammed a groundball up through the middle and into center field. Lestyk would ultimately be called out on his attempt to extend his trip on the hit to second base, but not before senior Corey Vincent, the courtesy runner for Doczi, scored from second to give the Bulldogs their first lead of the day. “Corey, he ran the bases well, he did his job,” Lestyk said, “and he got us up.” Amelia would respond in the top of the seventh inning, scoring on a sacrifice fly and ultimately forcing the game to
go extra innings. But Goochland answered in the bottom of the eighth. Sophomore Mason Gregory smacked a line-drive single into right-center, Will Stratton bunted and reached first as the ball deflected off of the first baseman’s glove following an Amelia infielder’s throw, and White loaded the bases on an infield hit. After the Raiders registered one out, Lestyk stepped back up to the plate. He waited through three balls and three strikes, including a foul ball he hit to keep his at-bat alive on the full count, before he watched the decisive 3-2 pitch sail below the zone. He took his base on ball no. 4 to drive in Gregory for the walk-off run and the win. “As everybody on this team knows, I haven’t always been the most patient at the plate, but it has most definitely been something that I’ve been working on, and it definitely paid off tonight when we needed it the most,” Lestyk said. “I couldn’t be any happier tonight with it.” “Travis has been one of our more disciplined hitters all season – he leads the team in quality at-bats – so he’s kind of a guy you want up there to make a pitcher work for that,” Farkas said. “He did what he’s been doing all year, so that was good. He was definitely selective at the end. “Obviously you’d love to have a walk-off hit, but a walkoff is still a walk-off for us,” Farkas said. “A win is a win.” Lestyk and Doczi finished the game with 2 RBI apiece. White batted 2 for 3 and scored a run. While the Bulldogs’ defense gave up 2 unearned runs across the first two innings, it made heads-up plays through-

out the game and persevered in trouble spots. Doczi at first base caught a flyout in foul territory in the third inning, and Summitt followed up Doczi’s play with a high-reaching, leaping catch to snatch a flyball in shallow left field. Senior Andrew Jones turned a flyout into his glove at third base into a double play in the fourth inning when he forced out an Amelia base runner – who had too big of a lead off of first base to tag back up – on the throw to Doczi. Goochland’s starting pitcher A.J. Condrey, a sophomore, struck out five batters, scattered three walks and two hits in five innings on the mound and kept his ERA for the game at 0.00.
“A.J. pitched really well, we kind of gave away those first two runs – we have one where we throw it into the outfield, the other one, it’s a hit batter, they ultimately score…and then we kind of settled in,” Farkas said. “A.J. pitched well, he had solid defense behind him, and Chris, once he got settled in, he threw well, too. Again, defense came up big for us.” Chris White fanned four batters and allowed three walks, one earned run and no hits in his three innings of work. White also held a potential third run for Amelia at third base by getting the next two batters to swing for strikeouts and pull his team out of the top of the sixth. The Bulldogs delivered a
lights-out top of the eighth inning against Amelia’s batters. White fanned two – one looking, one swinging – and Riley Hite hustled to a groundball to rifle the 6-3 throw to first in a three-up, three-down halfinning that set up Goochland’s game-winning efforts in the bottom of the frame. The Bulldogs ended their final regular season as a member of the James River District with a winning record of 6-5. In the first round of regionals, Goochland slashed visiting Brentsville District’s lead from 13-0 all the way down to 13-9 on a 9-run inning in the fourth. But Brentsville pulled away on 4 runs in the fifth and 1 in the sixth to win the run-filled regional quarterfinal game 18-9.

Goochland roundup: track athletes win region titles Staff Reports
Goochland High School standout athletes Tyler Black and Chris White won championships at the Class 3, Region B outdoor track and field meet to lead Goochland’s boys team in its fourth-place finish. With their top-four finishes, five individuals – Black, White, Leilani Burgess, Ben McCray and John Williams – and the boys 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams qualified for this Friday’s Class 3 state meet at Liberty University at 8 a.m. White set the new school
Doubles continued from >8 the Bulldogs earned the crucial break point when one of Webb’s strengths – his groundstroke returns from the baseline – parlayed into one of Bernstine’s – his strong shots near the net – to push them ahead. From there, Goochland kept a 1-game lead as each duo won whenever it served through the duration of the set. In the 10th and final game of the series - in which Bernstine served - the Falcons hit out Bernstine’s fiery first serve for a 15-0 lead for Goochland. Webb rocked an overhead winner at the net to go up 30-15, York hit the ball short off of Webb’s return shot to make it 40-30 for the Bulldogs, and the Falcons hit out Bernstine’s second serve,

William Hoffler and Lucas Weaver finished third in 3:34.97. McCray placed fourth in the boys 100-meter hurdles in 18.48 seconds, and Williams placed fourth in the boys 400 in 52.85 seconds. Burgess took fourth in the girls triple jump with a distance of 31 feet, 9 inches.
record with his Region 3B title-winning run of 40.54 seconds in the 300-meter hurdles, and he also won the regional title in the boys 200 dash in 23.02 seconds. Black, the defending Class 3 state champion in the indoor pole vault, won his first Region 3B outdoor title in the event with a mark of 12 feet, 6 inches. The boys 4x100 relay team of White, Gabe Liptak, C.J. Towles and William Hoffler finished runner-up in 44.63 seconds. The boys 4x400 relay team of Liptak, Jack Hoffler,
and girls soccer teams and the softball team played in the regionals on Monday. Goochland boys soccer, the top seed in the Region 3B tournament, continued its unbeaten season (11-0) with a 4-1 win over James Monroe. Connor Doersch scored 2 goals and Yoshi Da Silva and Gintas Putinas each had 1. Playing on the road, Goochland softball ended its stellar year in the first round of regionals on a narrow 5-4 setback to hosting Warren County. The Bulldogs tightened the home team’s lead to 1 run on Jayden Staton’s 1-out RBI ground ball single in the top of the seventh, but an out at second base on a fielder’s choice and a lineout to third sealed up the win for Warren County.
Karsyn Martin scored 2 runs in the loss. Prior to Monday, Goochland’s softball team swept Amelia 14-4 and 3-2 in a doubleheader on the road to close out the regular season with a record of 8-4. The second game was won in extra innings. Brookelyn Green scored from second base on a pinch-hit ball to right center by McKenzie Jones. Staton and Chelsey Farthing pitched the first game for the 14-4 team win. Farthing earned the pitching win in the second game.
enabling Goochland to secure set point. Mirroring their play in the first round of regionals the week before, Bernstine and Webb got better and better as the match went on. After Novak served for the win in the opening game of the second set, the Bulldogs swept the next six. The Goochland duo made its way to its first break point of the set for a 2-1 lead when Bernstine spiked a volley from the net to set up deuce point, Webb helped secure the advantage for Goochland when York hit out his low pickup return from the baseline, and the Bulldogs held firm to win the game on the following point. In the Bulldogs’ third game receiving in the set, Bernstine quickly hustled to save a strong shot from York, putting
it in the air and landing it back on the court and in play on the towering lob. From there, Webb’s stonewalling defense from back beyond the baseline helped tie the game at 15-all, and Goochland swept the next three points for the 4-1 lead as the Falcons either hit away or could not return three straight returns by Webb. In the next game, Bernstine landed three straight aces on explosive first serves. Goochland secured the match when York hit out another one of Webb’s returns. The Bulldogs never lost while serving in the semifinal round. “The York win was a good win,” Bernstine said. “We just got that one break in that first set and sort of took off from there. I felt good about that match.” In a sweltering state final,
Webb and Bernstine ran into a powerhouse pair in Western Albemarle’s Tobin Yates and Bryce Duncan, whose control, quick reads, fiery serves and powerful shots – including smashing overheads of their own – helped them sweep the first set 6-0. But Bernstine and Webb found their footing in the second, taking an early 1-0 lead after Bernstine served an ace for game point. The Bulldogs earned their first break point of the match when Western Albemarle double-faulted on the second straight point, tying the second set at 3-3. The two teams traded games by breaking each other’s serve before Duncan and Yates swept the ninth game while receiving. Goochland persevered through four match points, but Western broke through
for the fifth when Yates put it away on an overhead. Despite the setback, Webb was able to win points against the dominant duo with the help of his serve – including his first – and Bernstine – in addition to being able to keep in play multiple strong shots that had cleared the court on one bounce but had yet to land a second time – delivered multiple through-ball winners as well as big shots that ranged from hammering returns across the length of the court to his powerful overhead at the net. For Webb, who first helped out and managed the team in his seventh- and eighth-grade years and played across the last three years, it’s been a great experience being part of Goochland tennis. “The friendships and teamwork that our team has
formed over the years has been really strong – especially in this last year; we’ve been running practices almost yearround, even through COVID and working with everybody to keep everything socially distanced, but this last year has really been crucial,” Webb said prior to the state tournament. “We tried to get back into tennis as soon as possible and we did that, and we worked year-round to improve everybody, so a lot of these guys who never even picked (up) a racket are doing really well this year.” Following the conclusion of the state final, Webb added: “Goochland tennis has been great. I’ve been under two coaches, both of them really good. It was just a fun experience. Everybody - the whole team - really bonded throughout all four years.”
or college in general – right now he’s enjoying his high school years and the process of getting better – but he does have his sights set on playing Division I tennis. “I just want to go somewhere and play tennis and get
a good education,” he said. Evan will look to play a ton of tennis this summer. Two major tournaments in which he plans to compete are the USTA National Clay Court Championships in Florida (July 11-18) and the USTA
Boys’ National Championships in Kalamazoo, Michigan (Aug. 6-15). Growing up in a tennis family – his dad, Mark Bernstine, is the tennis professional at Hermitage Country Club – Evan said he
owes “every single thing” to his parents Mark and Diane Bernstine. “My dad has taught me everything I know strokes, physical-wise, my mom has taught me everything I know (on) how to compete
and enjoy myself out there,” Evan said. “I just have two really supportive parents. I got really lucky – two brothers to practice with, a facility to practice at. It’s just sort of unreal, but I’m really grateful for it.”
